Wisconsin's Madeline Island, the most southern island of the Apostle Islands , may have been visited as early as 1618 by Etienne Brule - preceeding the Pilgrams landing at Plymouth Rock by 2 years. By 1660 active trading by Radisson & Groseilliers is a matter of record. During the 1660s Jesuit priests Menard, Allouez, and Marquette visited the area in their attempt to bring Christianity to natives. In 1693 Pierre Le Sueur founded a trading post on the south end of the island.

Things to do and see on the island include a walking tour of the historical structures in LaPointe, visiting the history museum, sampling the restaurants and pubs, taking a bike, bus or car tour of the island, beach combing, golfing, hiking, swimming or camping at Big Bay State park, and just "hanging out" enjoying the easy ambience of the island. And the ferry ride itself is a worthwhile attraction - you get a view of the Apostle Islands and Bayfield from the water that you can't get from land.

On one visit in mid-May, we took the Madeline Island Ferry to the village of LaPointe, WI on Madeline Island. For early season and a forecast for a cool, rainy weekend, we surprised to see the number of people and cars headed for the Island on a Friday afternoon. The Ferry had to run an extra trip to meet the demand. Another year we arrived Memorial Day weekend and have also visited the Island in mid-summer to spend some time at Big Bay State Park .

Madeine Island Fun Places to Eat and have your favorite beverage

Grandpa Tony's madeline island

Grandpa Tony's is a favorite for ice cream and pizza, but they also have sandwiches and beer, plus a great upper deck with a view of of the lake.

Across the street from Tony's is the The Beach Club on the waterfront as the name suggests. We dined there two times during our recent trip. On our first visit we tried two dining specialties we often use as a benchmark for Lake Superior dining places: Whitefish Sandwich and a Swiss & Mushroom Burger baskets (with chips and cole slaw).

Beach Club Sandwiches

Both dishes got good marks. The Whitefish was flakey and not "fishy" tasting, grilled just right, and served hot on a sourdough bun. The burger was also served hot as well, meaty & tasty, and a good portion size. Wait service was quick and attentive. Friendly bartender served up pints of South Shore Brewery's Oatmeal Porter and Nut Brown Ale.

Beach Club outdoor deck

The next day Friday, we sampled the Beach Club's Friday Fish Fry and enjoyed dining outside on the lakeside deck. Your choices were either Lake Superior Lake Trout or Whitefish, lightly breaded. Came with large serving of fries and cole slaw. As the previous day, the Whitefish was excellent, tasty and served hot. The Beach Club also gets high marks for value. You'd expect prices on the Island to be higher than average. This was not the case at the Beach Club. The Whitefish Fish Fry was $11.50 and 16 ounce tap of craft beer was $4.50, no more than the average you'd find around Lake Superior (prices from 2015). Reviews online from Google Plus, Yelp, and TripAdvisor agree with our favorable assessment.

Tom's Burned Down Cafe, Madeline Island

Not to be missed for the island visitor is stop for a cold beverage, at decent prices too, is Tom's Burned Down Cafe . A crazy, outdoor mish-mash of old trailers, tents, all sorts of junk, pieces of lumber thrown together to create a unique and fun "beach dive bar" that belongs on the waterfront but happens to be a block away.

Tom's Burned Down Cafe

The Bell Street Gallery provides an interesting blend of an artist gallery, a wine and craft beer bar, and a musical entertainment venue.

Riding the Madeline Island Ferry

Most visitors to the island take the ferry from Bayfield as passengers or with their vehicles. On a nice day, you can enjoy panoramic views from the ships upper deck.

While taking your car or RV to the island is a neat experience, you can see quite a lot by walking around town. If you want to go further around the island, you can rent a bike.

As soon as the ice is out, the Madeline Island Ferry begins running 4 times a day from Bayfield to the village of La Pointe. After May 7th, its schedule increases to 11 daily trips, in June and July even more frequent. The island Windsled provides service to the island when the bay freezes over.

The Native American Heritage of Madeline Island

Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands, holds a significant place in the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Native American communities, particularly the Ojibwe (Chippewa) people. Known as “Moningwunakauning,” which translates to “Home of the Golden Breasted Woodpecker,” the island has been a sacred site and a seasonal home for the Ojibwe for centuries before European contact.

The Spiritual Significance

For the Ojibwe, Madeline Island is not just a piece of land; it’s a spiritual sanctuary that embodies their people’s history, traditions, and migration story. According to oral histories, the Ojibwe traveled from the east coast of North America to the Great Lakes region, following a prophecy that directed them to find the “land where food grows on water.” This prophecy was fulfilled when they discovered wild rice growing in the region’s waters, including areas around the Apostle Islands.

The Island’s Role Through History

Throughout history, Madeline Island served as a trade, culture, and diplomacy center for Native American tribes, French fur traders, and, later, American settlers. The island’s strategic location made it a hub for interactions between different cultures, but for the Ojibwe, it has always remained a spiritual and ancestral home.

Preservation of Native Language and Culture

Madeline Island and its surroundings honor and preserve the Ojibwe language and culture today. Efforts are being made to revitalize the native language through educational programs, signage, and cultural events that encourage residents and visitors to learn about and respect the island’s original inhabitants. Signs around the island feature both English and Ojibwe, serving as a daily reminder of the island’s rich cultural heritage.

Getting to Madeline

The most common way to get to Madeline Island is to take the Madeline Island Ferry. In the summer months, the ferry leaves every 30 minutes during the day and the 2.5 mile trip takes about 25 minutes one way. Passengers can walk, take a bike or drive their vehicles aboard for a visit to Madeline Island. The Madeline Island Ferry terminal is located at the base of Washington Avenue and tickets must be purchased at that location. Reservations are not accepted beforehand. Oversized vehicles can be accommodated.

The ferry runs from the time the ice breaks up in the springtime until the ice forms again and is too thick to break, usually in mid-winter.  In winter, when the ice is too thick for the ferry to run, visitors can use the Ice Road to get to Madeline Island. The Ice Road follows a route similar to that of the ferry, but travelers drive their own vehicle over the frozen Lake Superior.

Visitors can also hire a private charter to travel to Madeline Island. Both sailboat and powerboat options are available, many of which operate from the Bayfield City Dock.

For those who have their own boat, limited public docking is available at the Madeline Island Yacht Club, the Inn on Madeline Island and the Beach Club.

Your kayak guide will provide a short introduction of the area, paddling instructions, and safety procedures.  Then you will start your paddle around the point to explore the shoreline of sandstone cliffs, slots and sea caves.  The tour is approximately 3-4 miles round trip paddling in 2-person tandem sea touring kayaks * .  We require a minimum of four people per tour in order to go out. Morning and afternoon tours available. Minimal to no experience necessary. Come on the adventure of a lifetime!

Once the ferries stop running for the winter, there is a passenger only windsled that travels on a limited schedule. The windsled is used until the ice road is considered safe enough for cars and light trucks to travel. The windsled is used again in the spring when the road is deemed unworthy of travel but the lake ice is too thick for the ferries to cut through.
