To determine the best historical cities to visit in the USA, U.S. News considered the storied pasts, preserved landmarks, notable monuments and tourist-friendly services in each city – as well as votes from users. Vote on your top picks for history lovers to help us determine next year's list. (Note: Some of the below destinations may be affected by the coronavirus outbreak. Check with the CDC and the U.S. Department of State before traveling.)

Washington, D.C.

Philadelphia, williamsburg, charleston, sc, new orleans.

America's capital is brimming with affordable things to do. The Washington Monument, the U.S. Capitol, the White House and the Lincoln Memorial anchor the National Mall, while the Tidal Basin boasts three of its own memorials dedicated to history-making figures. Various outfitters offer history tours that focus on showcasing the city's past through the eyes of everyone from specific presidents to notable women. What's more, exploring the Smithsonian museums, filled with art and science history, won't cost you a dime.

Boston is a city of American firsts. The country's first public library, first subway system, first public school and first public park belong to Boston. Here, you can stroll the same cobblestone streets as the Puritans and revolutionaries. Kick off your city tour on the Freedom Trail, which guides visitors past 16 of the city's most historic sites. A few must-see historical attractions include Faneuil Hall Marketplace (built in 1742), the Paul Revere House (built around 1680), the Old North Church (built in 1723) and the Fenway Park baseball stadium (opened in 1912).

Gettysburg Battlefield, the 6,000-acre Civil War military park that witnessed the momentous clash of Union and Confederate forces in 1863, is the star of any visit to this Pennsylvania town. Gettysburg also played a part in the Cold War, which you'll learn about next door to the famous battlefield at the Eisenhower National Historic Site. To better understand the town's role in these historic events and more, speak with the knowledgeable curators and peruse the 4,000-plus historical artifacts on display at the Gettysburg Museum of History.

You'll see Benjamin Franklin's name and influence across the United States' first capital city. Visit Independence Hall, where Ben and company signed the Declaration of Independence. Then, pay homage to the famously cracked Liberty Bell. And for a bit of cinematic history, head to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to snap a picture of the famous "Rocky Steps." When you get hungry, visit Reading Terminal Market, one of the largest and oldest public markets in America, to sample everything from ice cream and pastries to cheesesteaks and barbecue.

With its preserved Colonial sites and costumed interpreters, Williamsburg, Virginia, is the definition of a living history museum. Your first stop should be Colonial Williamsburg, where you'll be greeted by the "residents" who once called this revolutionary town home. Visitors have no shortage of learning opportunities: Williamsburg offers more than 20 guided and self-guided daily tours, ranging from ghost tours to garden tours – all included with your admission ticket. Round out your Williamsburg visit with a stop at the Yorktown Battlefield, the site of the last major battle of the Revolutionary War.

If you're visiting Williamsburg, you'll likely also make a stop at Jamestown, where English settlers established the first American Colony in 1607. Similar to Colonial Williamsburg, the Jamestown Settlement acts a living history museum, with costumed interpreters telling the story of life in 17th-century Virginia. You'll even get the chance to climb aboard replicas of the three ships that first brought colonists to Virginia. To learn more about the Paspahegh Indian Tribe, the Powhatan tribal group closest to Jamestown, plan to stop by Paspahegh Town.

Walking around the Battery with Fort Sumter in the distance may make you feel like you've stepped back in time. Should you wish to catch a glimpse of former 19th-century Southern high society, tour Middleton Place, the Aiken-Rhett House Museum or the Nathaniel Russell House Museum. Another great way to get to know this South Carolina city is on a historical walking tour. Or, simply relax on the wraparound porch of your historic bed-and-breakfast.

This coastal city southeast of Boston boasts its fair share of historic homes, museums and monuments dedicated to the Wampanoag Indian Tribe and the men and women who founded the first New England Colony. But Plymouth, Massachusetts, is also home to a bit of 21st-century history: Visitors will find the city's 9/11 Memorial just north of Plymouth Rock. What's more, lodging options range from historic hotels to quaint bed-and-breakfast accommodations.

Many come to New Orleans to party hard on Bourbon Street, but history lovers will delight in admiring sights like the French Quarter, the Cabildo and St. Louis Cathedral. If you need a break from the crowds, head to the Garden District or Chalmette Battlefield, or escape the heat at the popular National WWII Museum. If you don't mind a bit of ghost lore mixed in with your history lesson, you'll also want to sign up for one of the city's cemetery tours.

Luring travelers interested in learning about everything from witches and pirates to Colonial and maritime history, Salem was founded in 1626. This town situated on the northern coast of Massachusetts is best known for its ties to the Salem witch trials, which curious visitors can get an overview of at the Salem Witch Museum. Other popular historical attractions to visit include The Witch House, the New England Pirate Museum and the Salem Maritime National Historic Site.

They guide you throughout the day, and dine with you in the evening, as all Cultural Experience tours include a three course meal in the evening.

Another benefit of a Cultural Experience tour is that a maximum of 22 passengers are accommodated on each tour. This means that we can include more in our daily activities as there is less time spent waiting for others to catch up.

The need for social distancing may have forced museums and historic sites around the world to close their doors for now, but many have made their spaces, exhibits and collections available to anyone with a digital device and a decent web connection. Some offer 360-degree tours, like the one that takes you into every nook and cranny of George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate. Others present virtual exhibits or browsable online archives, such as the dozens on Google Arts & Culture’s site, where partner museums share treasures like the Rosetta Stone and ancient Egyptian artifacts ( The British Museum , London)...iconic 20th century photos (the LIFE Magazine archive)...or troves of sports history (the Olympic Museum , Lausanne, Switzerland). Here are 10 standout virtual history sites worth exploring:

Xi'an Warriors

It was one of the most stunning archaeological finds of the 20th century. In 1974, farmers digging a well stumbled across a life-sized clay figure that, government archaeologists later discovered, belonged to a vast army of terra cotta soldiers created to protect China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, in the afterlife. The massive mausoleum, created around 210 B.C., houses some 8,000 warriors, along with hundreds of chariots and horses—all arranged in battle formation. In 2017, a Chinese company, inspired by Google Street View, created an awe-inspiring virtual experience that lets visitors swoop down into the tomb and “walk” among the soldiers, viewing their unique facial expressions and traces of their original colorful paint at close range. You don’t need to read Chinese to appreciate the enormity of it all.

Smithsonian Museum of American History

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History bills itself as the greatest single collection of U.S. history in the world, home to more than 1.8 million objects that each, in some fundamental way, defines the American experience. The museum offers about 100 online exhibits from its encyclopedic collections, each with a mix of photos, video, graphics and text on topics ranging from the life of Abe Lincoln (yep, they’ve got the stovepipe hat) to the development of the first artificial heart to the evolution of voting machines and even an array of vintage lunch boxes.

The Museum of Flight

These exceptional tours cover a variety of topics, from the heroic tales of the Independence War and the Civil Rights movement to the more light-hearted stories of literary giants, royal palaces (yes, really!) and musical legends. Alabama: The Fight for Rights Tour, Birmingham

Once the nation's most segregated city and notorious for racially motivated violence, Birmingham became the heart of the Civil Rights movement. Arkansas: Old State House Museum guided tours, Little Rock

California: Alcatraz Island Day Tour

As a legendary location immortalized in movies and TV, Alcatraz's reputation precedes it. The island off the coast of San Francisco was the site of a formidable prison from 1934 to 1963. Designed to house the most notorious prisoners, including Al Capone himself, the penitentiary can now be visited on day tours. The tour includes a round-trip ferry to Alcatraz Island and access to the prison's interior, including the cells. Tours depart daily and tickets cost $53.25 (discounts for children and seniors).

Colorado: Cliff Dwelling Tours, Mesa Verde National Park

Carved out of an alcove in Mesa Verde National Park, the Cliff Palace is a cliff village once built and inhabited by Ancestral Puebloans in the 13th century. Studies have shown that the remarkable dwelling contained around 150 buildings, created from sandstone, mortar and wooden reinforcements, and housed around 100 people at a time. To enter the site and learn more about its fascinating history, visitors can join a ranger-led guided tour of the Cliff Palace. Tours run seasonally and 2024 dates are yet to be announced. 

Connecticut: Guided tour of Mark Twain House and Museum, Hartford

Follow in the footsteps of one of the most famous authors in the world as you walk the halls of Samuel Clemens' (aka Mark Twain's) home. The impressive 25-room Gothic mansion includes the grand hall, library and billiards room where the author penned Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Prince and The Pauper among others. The house can only be visited on guided tours which run daily (closed on Tuesdays) and tickets start from $24 (discounts for children and seniors).

Delaware: Delaware History Trail, statewide

This excellent self-guided trail of 29 culturally and historically significant locations throughout the state is an excellent resource to tap into when you're visiting. The trail covers sites such as estates and gardens, historic towns, colonial landmarks and coastal attractions all connected to the history of Delaware. Our favorite spots include the Wilmington & Western Railroad, Fort Delaware State Park and Nemours Estate. 

Florida: St Augustine Historic Walking Tours, St Augustine

Florida is not all theme parks and beaches, it's also home to the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the continental United States. St Augustine was established in 1565 by Spanish explorers and many of its buildings in the Historic District still date back to the 1700s. The historic walking tours in St Augustine have continuously been voted among the best in the country. Choose between the Conquistatour of St Augustine or the Homes and Buildings Tour and journey into the past of this historic city. Tours run daily and tickets are $25 (discounts for children).

Georgia: The James Brown Family Historical Tour, Augusta

The Godfather of Soul has a special place in America's music history. Cherish the memories of James Brown and visit his childhood home, spots where he hung out, his favorite restaurants and even his elementary school. Tours are led by his daughter Deanna Brown-Thomas and can be arranged via the James Brown Family Foundation. Tickets cost $25.

Hawaii: Iolani Palace tours, Honolulu

As the only royal residence in the United States, Honolulu's Iolani Palace is truly unique. Completed in 1882, it served as the seat of the Hawaiian monarchy. Queen Liliuokalani was Hawaii's last sovereign and the splendid building offers an interesting insight into the affairs of the monarchy. Today, several guided tours are available – the volunteer docent-led tour is among the best and dives into the history of the palace, as well as its royal residents. Tours are available on Wednesdays and Thursdays for $32.95 (various discounts for under-18s and the military apply).

Idaho: Historic District Walking Tour, Idaho City

Idaho City is one of the best day trips from Boise. Today a quirky 'ghost town' (it does technically have around 500 residents), it was the largest city in the northwest more than a century ago. In the 1860s, plenty of miners descended upon Idaho City and the now-derelict buildings have retained a lot of their charm. This  walking tour lets you step back in time and grants access to historic buildings such as the courthouse and saloon, as well as the village, plus you'll hear secrets and stories you're unlikely to discover anywhere else. Tickets start from $5.

Illinois: Chicago Architecture Foundation Center River Cruise, Chicago

The Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise  on board the First Lady is an excellent way to get your bearings and learn about the Windy City's history. It takes in a significant amount of Chicago's most remarkable buildings, with the knowledgeable docents giving each one a historical context too. The tour finishes with a short trip out into Lake Michigan so you can marvel at the historic architecture that's left its mark on the city skyline. The river cruise season runs from spring to fall, tickets start at $54.

Indiana: Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site guided tour, Indianapolis

Sometimes hidden among more famous names, the 23rd president Benjamin Harrison has actually left a very permanent mark on the country. A colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War, Indiana's only president is most remembered for opening the immigration station on Ellis Island. His home – a stunning example of an Italianate Victorian home from 1875 – holds many fascinating artifacts and bursts with family history. The many exhibits tell of the president's life and work, put into context thanks to comprehensive daily guided tours (check hours of the tours before visiting). Tickets are $16 with various discounts to children, students, the military, veterans and seniors, or book in advance online and save $2 per ticket.

Iowa: History Express, Union Pacific Railroad Museum, Council Bluffs

Across the state border of Nebraska in Omaha, the Union Pacific Railroad Museum traces the history of one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects America has ever seen. The museum explores 150 years of American railroad history, from the nation's first transcontinental railway to the technology of modern-day railroading. The experience is taken to the next level with the in-depth guided tour History Express , which covers both floors of the museum and its exhibits. The museum is free to visit, tickets cost $10 and should be booked in advance.

Kansas: Dome Tours, Kansas State Capitol, Topeka

Kansas' State Capitol building is striking indeed, from the two stories below ground right up to the magnificent 306-foot dome. Climb the 296 steps to appreciate breathtaking close-up views of the inner and outer domes. To learn more about the dome and the rest of the building's history, take a guided or self-guided tour , which run throughout the year, are free, and reservations are not required for groups of 10 or fewer.

Kentucky: The Trace Tour, Buffalo Trace Distillery, Frankfort

The spiritual home of bourbon, Kentucky is jam-packed with distilleries offering tours, however, Buffalo Trace is special – it's the oldest continually operating distillery in the US. The Trace Tour sees visitors head inside the Blanton Bottling Hall to learn all about the history of bourbon in Kentucky and of the distillery in particular. There are also opportunities to sample the goods for yourself. All tours are complimentary and run daily, but should be booked in advance to avoid disappointment as tour sizes are small.

Louisiana: Whitney Plantation guided tour, Edgard

A former indigo, sugar and cotton plantation established in 1752, the Whitney Plantation serves as a chilling reminder of America’s history of slavery. The site was home to more than 350 enslaved people, whose names can be seen etched onto the Wall of Honor today. Guided tours delve deeper into the plantation's troublesome history and offer a sobering opportunity to learn about the lives of enslaved people during this period. Tours are offered three times a day and can be booked in advance online. Tickets are $32 (discounts available for under-19s, children under six go free).

Maine: A Daily Walk Through Time, Portland

Portland has buckets of history waiting to be uncovered on a two-hour walking tour . Covering the historic Old Port, downtown and waterfront areas, the tour charts Portland's history as far back as 1632, bringing the city's maritime, industrial and cultural past to life. Maryland: Flag Talk, Fort McHenry, Baltimore

"O say can you see…" One of the world's most instantly recognizable anthems was inspired by this very spot. Its author, Francis Scott Key, wanted to capture the dramatic victory during the Battle of Baltimore in 1814 when American forces repelled and defeated British troops in the Independence War. The fort played a pivotal role and today it can be visited on a self-guided tour. Don't miss the daily Flag Talk  – the short, ranger-led program shines a light on the American flag that inspired the anthem and tells the story of the events that led to the victory being immortalized in the  Star-Spangled Banner 's lyrics. The day entrance fee is $15, children under 15 go free, or visit on one of the six fee-free days.

Massachusetts: Walk Into History, Boston

The signature tour on Boston's Freedom Trail, this comprehensive walk  takes in all of the city's most important historical highlights, including Boston Common and Massachusetts State House. Expect stories of the American Revolution and US history spanning six centuries. Tours run six times daily and tickets cost $17 (with discounts for seniors, students and children, children under six go free).

Missouri: 2-Hour History Tour, Missouri State Penitentiary, Jefferson City

Watch Jefferson City's past come to life as you stroll the halls and cells of this once-famous prison. Still owned by the state, it was the oldest continually operating prison west of the Mississippi until it was decommissioned in 2004. The Classic Europe tour with Expat was amazing. Everything was very convenient and well organised. Adam our tour guide and Florin our driver did wondeful jobs to make sure we saw and did everything on schedule and gave us special treats with some extra free times to enjoy the places where they could. We had such a great time with the tour itself and the people we met in the tour group were very lovely and we kept in touch. This tour sets such a high standard for our next trips! Definitely 5 stars service and we will definitely join Expat tour again in future.

Eva and Rene were amazing tour guides. Disappointed that we didn't see the Eiffel Tower at night. Several times we were dropped in town at night with not enough time to get a meal before being taken to the hotel. Some hotels were out of town with nothing within walking distance. Thank you to Rene for arranging for a group of us to go to the Moulin Rouge.

So honestly when we were assigned to this company through Tour Radar and looked at the reviews we were a little worried. I tried to hope for the best and assume that people who DO NOT have great experiences write more reviews. I was absolutely correct. We had AMAZING tour guides. Knowledgeable, kind, helpful. I think this company does an amazing job of moving people from one destination to another especially when it seems that itineraries overlap offering everyone the trip they desire. The hotels far outweighed our expectations. Of course there were small hiccups with time losses and changes in plans for the day but for the price and to get a brief view of Europe I would call it an outstanding tour.

Sioux City Public Museum brings history to life during walking tour at Logan Park Cemetery

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) -The Sioux City Public Museum taught a memorable history lesson while walking through the Logan Park Cemetery Saturday morning.

The walking tour took place on Saturday, April 27 at 10 a.m. The 90-minute walking tour is part of the Museum’s rotating tour of Sioux City cemeteries.

They provide the public with stories of notable individuals who have helped shape Sioux City’s existence such as prominent businessmen, famous cartoonists and more.

Museum Archives Manager, Tom Munson says cemeteries provide a great opportunity to learn about the town’s past.

“We talk about the people buried here. We talk about symbolism on headstones,” Munson said. “I think it’s just a great way for modern citizens to look back at the past, the people who have helped build up this community.”

Miles Russell continues to prove himself on the biggest of stages.

The 15-year-old Floridian earned a spot in last week’s LECOM Suncoast Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour and took full advantage of the opportunity by finishing in a tie for 15th. That paved the way for another exemption in Texas, where Russell opened the Veritex Bank Championship with a 3-under 68.

The left-hander opened his round with eight straight pars but finally broke through with a birdie at the par-5 9th. A long-range bomb from 30 feet followed at 11, and another birdie at the par-3 12th came minutes after. Suddenly, Russell sat at 3-under and in a solid position through 12 holes.

Russell made another birdie at the drivable, par-4 16th, which measured 329 yards on Thursday. But he made a costly mistake on the final hole, a par-5, as he three-putted from 25 feet for a bogey six.

Still, Russell played beautifully from tee to green, hitting 13-of-14 fairways and 16-of-18 greens. He scrambled nicely, too, going 2-for-2 when he missed the putting surface with his approaches.

But at the end of the day, Russell is 10 strokes behind Frankie Capan III, who shot 58 and broke Scottie Scheffler’s course record in the process.

Still, Russell has a great chance to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour again—one week after becoming the youngest player to record a top-25 finish on the PGA Tour or Korn Ferry Tour since 1983.

He will likely need another round in the 60s to make the cut again, but knowing how much talent this 15-year-old has, that is most certainly within the realm of possibilities.

Nelly Korda Cannonballs Into LPGA History With Win at The Chevron Championship

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — A cannonball. That was how Nelly Korda celebrated her historic victory on Sunday at The Chevron Championship.

A well-executed leap into the lake on the left side of the 18th green at The Club at Carlton Woods after a hard-fought major test. A battle that saw her name permanently enshrined in greatness alongside some of the game’s most memorable legends who’ve hoisted the Dinah Shore Trophy.

It wasn’t an easy journey for Korda, who has dealt with injuries and setbacks and doubts since she won her first major title at the 2021 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. But it’s a road that she’s thankful she had to take because it led her to this moment in The Woodlands, Texas.

“In '21 I had an amazing year, got my first major at KPMG. Just a lot of doubt crept into my mind in 2022 and especially 2023,” said Korda. “I heard some outside voices from other people saying that they don't know if I'll ever be able to win another major again, and I stuck to working extremely hard on and off the golf course.

“I think of all the sad times and the health scares that I have gone through have made me who I am today. I think it has matured me a lot, and I would say it's shaped me into the person I am today, and I'm very grateful for the ups and downs.”

The ups were highs, like winning a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and ascending to No. 1 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. The lows saw her sidelined for months with a blood clot in her left arm and with back injuries that just wouldn’t stop hurting no matter her recovery efforts.

But Korda, always resilient and ever the competitor, clawed her way back , and fought her way forward to some of the greatest successes of her career, making what she’s done in 2024 that much more significant.

This fifth consecutive victory puts Korda’s name next to the likes of some of the most revered generational talents in the LPGA Tour record books, joining Annika Sorenstam and Nancy Lopez as the only other player since 1978 to win five straight titles.

It’s a place in history that she’s more than earned after this recent tear of excellent golf she’s put together. But it also has put Korda at the forefront of the conversation about the state of American golf right now, as few – male or female – have ever accomplished what she has in the last couple of months, at least not in this modern era.

“It's trending in the right direction, not just American golf but women's golf in general,” said Korda. “I think you see the past couple of major winners, Allisen (Corpuz) won at the U.S. Open and Lilia (Vu) won here last year. I think we're just performing really well, and I think that's everyone on Tour, honestly.

“It's so hard to win out here, and I say that with all honesty that it is really, really hard to win out here. The competition is getting harder and harder every year.”

But Korda has figured out a way to do it and gives a ton of credit to her team for her success, not just since the end of January, but throughout her entire 13-victory career.

“I'm so thankful to have the team that I do. They've gone through all the highs and lows with me, especially Jason (McDede, her caddie),” Korda said. “He has been by my side for every single one of my wins out here, and in a sense he's my punching bag out there, he's my best friend, and he's my teammate. I wouldn't be able to do it without him because his encouragement on and off the golf course has been amazing, and I'm just so, so, so thankful for him. I hope he knows it.”

After all of her wins, Korda has continually talked about staying in what she refers to as her “bubble,” refusing to look forward or back at her success too closely and instead choosing to be where her feet are – focusing on the next challenge, task or shot at hand. It’s a mentality that has clearly made a huge difference for the 25-year-old and a zone she’ll now be working to find every time she tees it up on the LPGA Tour.

But it seems like this time, Korda might finally let herself take a breath and enjoy the sweetness of triumph, particularly now that the biggest challenge – winning her fifth straight title at a major championship – has been conquered.

A proper celebration with her team is on deck as well, no offense to the In-N-Out Burgers, Five Guys fries or almond croissants she’s had over the last few weeks, of course.

“It's an amazing feeling because all the hard work and the doubt that I had in my head from 2021, I worked through it,” said Korda. “It's been an amazing feeling these past couple weeks knowing that I can go on this stretch and that if I stay in my bubble and I keep golf simple and let it flow, then I can have so, so much fun out here.

“It's just been an amazing time. To get five in a row, and my lucky number is 13, and for me to get it here in Houston and it to be a major, feels even better.”

And after all the fans go home and the robe gets hung up and she crawls in her hotel bed tonight, Korda might just finally realize the magnitude of what she’s accomplished.

The best news though? It’s only April, and it already feels like there’s more Korda success to come in 2024.

Frankie Capan III makes history with a 13-under 58 on Korn Ferry Tour

Frankie Capan III tied the lowest under-par round in Korn Ferry Tour history on Thursday.

Capan, a Minnesota native and product of Florida Gulf Coast University, turned in a 13-under 58 at the Veritex Bank Championship in Texas, breaking Scottie Scheffler's course record.

Capan was four under through his first eight holes at Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington before making an eagle at the par-5 ninth. He proceeded to roll off seven consecutive birdies on the back, finishing with back-to-back pars on his final two holes for a 29-29 finish.

Interestingly it wasn’t even the lowest score on the Korn Ferry Tour this year. In February there were two sub-60 scores at the Astara Golf Championship thanks to Cristobal Del Solar (57) and 19-year-old Aldrich Potgieter (59). Those scores came with asterisks of sorts, as the course was a par 70 and playing at just 6,254 yards, a distance extremely short by pro standards made even shorter by the course’s elevation of 8,600 feet above sea level. For context, the Texas Rangers layout is a par-71 layout measured at 7,010 yards.

There have been just six other 58s recorded on world-ranked professional golf tours, including one at the KFT circuit (Stephan Jaeger at the 2016 Ellie Mae Classic). This group does not include Bryson DeChambeau’s 58 at a LIV Golf event in West Virginia last year, as the Saudi league does not qualify for Official World Golf Ranking points. Jim Furyk has the PGA Tour record with a 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship.

Capan, 24, is in his second year on the Korn Ferry Tour. He entered the week ranked 30th on the season-long points list, with the top 30 earning PGA Tour cards for the following season.

Frankie Capan III shoots 13-under 58 in Korn Ferry Tour event at Texas Rangers Golf Club

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Frankie Capan III shot a 13-under 58 on Thursday in the Veritex Bank Championship at Texas Rangers Golf Club to tie the Korn Ferry Tour record for relation to par and match the second-lowest score in tour history.

Capan played an eight-hole stretch in 9 under, making an eagle on the par-5 ninth and following with seven straight birdies. He two-putted for par on the par-4 17th, then hit into a fairway bunker on the par-5 18th and ended up saving par with a 7-foot putt.

“Whenever you’re out there playing well and going low, I really just wanted to keep going as much as I could,” Capan said. “I know this course might be gettable the next few days, so just tried to get as many as I could.”

Cristobal Del Solar shot the lowest round in Korn Ferry Tour history with a 13-under 57 in February in the Astara Golf Championship in Colombia. There have been 13 sub-60 rounds on the Korn Ferry Tour, six in the last 370 days

The 58 broke the course record of 59 set by Masters champion Scottie Scheffler in a casual round with friends on May 3, 2020.

“When someone said it was for 58, I was excited because I know Scottie Scheffler shot 59, so whenever you can beat that guy, especially nowadays, I mean, you’ve got to take advantage,” Capan said.

The 24-year-old Capan, making his 31st Korn Ferry Tour star, played at the University of Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast He previously shot 59 in the final round of a high school state championship

“I shot 59 before, so I thought, you know, may as well break that,” Capan said. “It was a lot of fun out there. After the first four, five holes, I just felt really comfortable with my game and where I was at.”

Trent Phillips was second after a 61. Tim Widing, the winner of the LECOM Suncoast Classic last week, had a 62.

The wind gusted to 30 mph on the mostly cloudy day, with a high temperature of 78.
