Can Indians Get a Hungary Visa on Arrival?

No, unfortunately, the Hungary visa on arrival for Indians is not available. To visit Hungary, Indian citizens are generally required to obtain a visa in advance, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free entry into the country.

Applying for a Schengen Visa at a Hungarian Diplomatic Mission:

Single Country Visit:

If Hungary is your only Schengen destination and where you'll first enter, apply at the Hungarian consulate.

Visiting Multiple Schengen Countries:

  • If you're visiting several Schengen countries and plan to stay longer in Hungary, apply at a Hungarian consulate.
  • If you're visiting multiple Schengen countries with similar stays, like tourism in Hungary, Germany, and France, apply at the consulate of your first entry country, which would be Hungary in this scenario.

Main Purpose of Visit:

Your main reason for visiting determines where you apply. If it's not clear or if you're visiting multiple countries, submit your application to the embassy or consulate of your first entry point to the Schengen area.

For example, if your main purpose is attending a conference in Hungary while touring multiple countries, apply at the Hungarian consulate.

Short stay uniform visa (C-type): This visa allows the holder to make single, double, or multiple entries, permitting a continuous stay of up to 90 days. Alternatively, for interrupted stays, the total duration should not exceed 90 days within a 180-day period, calculated from the date of the initial entry.

When seeking a Schengen C-type uniform short-stay visa, the intended reasons for entry can encompass various purposes, including tourism, business activities, engagement in sports, participation in cultural events, or visiting family and friends.

D Type Long Term Resident Permit: Individuals who are nationals and/or residents of India must obtain a residence permit if they intend to live in Hungary for a period exceeding 90 days.

Please be aware that the application for a residence permit must be submitted in person at the Hungarian Embassy and typically involves an interview. Third parties are not permitted to submit the application on behalf of the applicant.

If necessary, a designated representative can collect the passport and the decision on the residence permit application, provided they present an authorised letter signed by the applicant and duly certified by a public notary.

Airport Transit Visa: With an airport transit visa, you can pass through the international transit zones of the issuing country and other countries mentioned on the visa sticker. If your connecting flight is booked under the same reservation number, you don't have to leave the transit zone, you don't need an airport transit visa.

Yes, Indian citizens applying for a Hungary visa must have travel medical insurance. Since Hungary is part of the Schengen Area, travel insurance is a requirement.

Here are the important details to consider before availing a Travel insurance for Schengen visa:

  • Minimum Protection: Ensure you have coverage of at least €30,000 (Euros) for medical expenses if you get sick or have an accident while travelling in Hungary.
  • Recommended Benefits: Look for plans that cover hospital stays, returning home, emergency medical transportation, and other unexpected travel troubles.
  • Indian Insurance Providers: Check out offerings from trusted companies like Tata AIG, Digit Insurance, HDFC Ergo, and others to find a policy that fits what you need and can afford.
  • Incorrect or Fake Documents: Submitting untrue or altered documents can result in rejection. Always make sure the documents are genuine and meet all Hungary visa requirements for Indian citizens.
  • Inconsistent Travel Plans: If the details in your application, such as your itinerary or proof of accommodation, don't match your intended trip, it may raise suspicions and lead to denial.
  • Insufficient Financial Evidence: It's important to show enough funds, like at least Euro 50 to Euro 150 per day per person. Also, ensure you have a bank balance of INR 3,00,000 before applying for a Hungary visa.
  • Unconvincing Purpose of Visit: If visa officers doubt the genuineness of your reasons for visiting Hungary, such as concerns about potential overstaying, your application might be turned down.
  • Limited Travel History: Lack of previous travel experience, particularly for frequent travellers or specific visa types, could raise doubts and lead to rejection.
  • Damaged Passport: A passport in poor condition, with tears, missing pages, or expired validity, can be grounds for rejection. Make sure your passport is valid and in good condition.

Every applicant is entitled to exercise their right to appeal in case their application or visa is refused, annulled, or revoked. Here are the key steps in the appeal process:

  • The appeal must be submitted in person, either by the applicant or by an individual holding a power of attorney on behalf of the applicant, at the Consular and Visa Section of the Hungarian Embassy.
  • The appeal must be lodged within eight (8) calendar days from the date of receiving the decision or within three (3) calendar days if it pertains to the annulment or revocation of a visa.
  • The Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will make a decision on regular appeals within 15 days, while appeals against decisions related to the annulment or revocation of a visa will be decided upon within 5 days.
  • The appeal should be presented in writing and must bear the signature of the applicant or the authorised representative. The appeal fee must be paid when submitting the appeal and is non-refundable, even if the decision is favourable.
  • There is no possibility to reduce the appeal fee, and it applies to all applicants, including those who were eligible for a fee waiver during the initial application process. The appeal must be submitted in either Hungarian or an official language of the European Union. If the appeal is filed in another language, an official translation must be provided.
  • During the appeal process, the applicant or their representative may submit additional supporting documents, and there may be a provision for a personal visa interview at the consulate. The appeal judgement can potentially be subject to judicial review. In the event of a refusal, a new application can be submitted at any time, but the visa fee will need to be paid again.

When figuring out whether an airport transit visa (ATV) is required for Hungary, it's crucial to consider two different situations:

  • Staying within the international transit zone of an airport: This implies you stay inside the airport's international transit zone without leaving it. For instance, if your connecting flight is under the same booking reference, there's no need to leave the transit area, hence no transit visa is needed.
  • Passing through a Member State's territory at an airport: This case involves exiting the international transit zone of the airport.

Possessing an Airport Transit Visa allows you to move through the international transit area of a Hungarian airport while waiting for your onward flight to a country outside the Schengen area. Nevertheless, this visa doesn't allow you to enter the Schengen zone, such as going to a hotel or taking a flight to another Schengen country.

  • Prepare Your Travel Documents: Make sure to have your passport, valid Hungary visa (if required), return ticket, and hotel reservations ready for inspection by immigration officials upon arrival. Having these documents readily available will expedite the immigration process and ensure a smooth entry into Hungary.
  • Unaccompanied Minor Guidelines: If you're travelling alone as a minor, it's essential to stick close to your designated flight attendant for safety throughout your journey. Upon arrival, identify your assigned adult contact at the destination airport to ensure a secure and hassle-free arrival experience.
  • Understand Hungary's Regulations: Familiarise yourself with Hungary's customs regulation s before arrival. If you have items to declare or if your baggage needs inspection, proceed to the customs area accordingly. Being aware of the customs procedures will help avoid any potential complications during the arrival process.

By following these steps and staying informed about Hungary's entry requirements and regulations, you can ensure a seamless and stress-free arrival experience at the Hungary airport.

Your Schengen Hungary visa will specify the "number of entries" on the sticker, which can be either "1," "2," or "MULT." If it's marked as "MULT," this means you have the flexibility to enter the Schengen area as many times as needed within the visa's validity, as long as you follow the regulations governing the duration of each stay. A uniform Schengen visa permits its holder to visit all Schengen States for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. To determine the allowable duration of stay, applicants may utilise the short stay calculator accessible on the Directorate-General for Home Affairs website of the European Commission.

Whereas, a visa with limited territorial validity grants its holder permission to travel only to the specific State(s) indicated on the visa sticker, excluding any other Schengen States.

To enter Hungary, nationals of most countries require an endorsement known as the Hungary visa . Since Hungary is a part of the Schengen area, nationals of other Schengen countries and a few visa-exempt nations do not require a permit to enter the country. Issued as short term and long term categories, these allow you to travel within the Schengen region unless specifically specified as an LTV (Limited Territory Validity). In such a case, you will only be allowed to visit the countries that are listed on your visa sticker.

The application for the Hungary visa for Indians is done offline. However, before starting the application, it is necessary to ensure that you are eligible for the type of category you are applying for. For example, eligibility conditions for a tourist permit will be different from the one for a business category, and so on. After that, you may proceed to make the application as follows -

  • Obtain all the documents necessary for the application process.
  • Visit the website of the Hungary Visa Application Centre (VAC) or the embassy and download the application form.
  • Fill in the Hungary visa application form and take a print out of it. While choosing the purpose on the form, select the option that you are eligible for, and based on your primary motive of the visit.
  • Book an appointment for the application. You can choose one of the VACs or the Embassy/Consulate-general of Hungary situated in India. You can book it by calling or using the online portal of the VAC, or by emailing the Embassy/consulate.
  • With the documents, application form and the fees, visit the respective appointment centre in person.
  • You will have to provide your biometrics here. In some cases, you may be subjected to an interview with a consular officer at the embassy/consulate-general.

Please note that if you have submitted your biometrics for a Schengen permit in the past 5 years, your biometrics are stored in the Schengen VIS (Visa Information System). In this case, you do not have to submit them again, and as a result, you do not have to attend the appointment in person. You may authorize a third party to submit it for you by providing a certified authorization letter signed by you.

Personal Visit

What people say about us

Hungary visa policy.

Hungary is a Schengen country with the same laws as other nations in the Schengen Union. Under their visa policy, any visitor coming to the country must hold a visa unless they are from a visa-exempt country. This policy conforms to the European Union’s visa policy programs which incorporate the individual programs of member states. Holders of visas issued by Hungary enjoy free access to passport-free zones in the Schengen Area.

Under the same policy, citizens of Schengen countries don’t need visas to enter Hungary, nor do they need passports; with just their ID cards, they can visit and stay for as long as they wish and engage in any legal activity as part of the Schengen protocol. However, non-EU citizens must have to hold valid passports for at least six months, and they can only visit for business, tourism, or transit. Those from non-visa-exempt countries must have valid visas.

Schengen Visa For Hungary

The Schengen visa for Hungary is open to nationals from nearly 200 countries and territories. If your country is on the Schengen visa list, it means that you are not allowed to visit without a visa. This visa is issued by the Hungarian embassy to the applicant in person, allowing them to visit all member states of the Union for a total of 90 days combined. Applicants must fill out an application for me, attach relevant documents, and submit them to the Consulate or Embassy for approval.

Although there are works in the pipeline for applicants to apply for Schengen visas online, the European Commission has not finalized the process yet, so online applications for Schengen visas are not possible.

Hungary ETIAS

Schengen visas are to non visa-exempt visitors as ETIAS is to visa-exempt visitors. Before now, Al visa-exempt visitors needed to visit Hungary was valid passports, and they were good to go. However, all this changed with the launch of the Electronic Travel Information and Authorization System. While they can still visit Hungary without visas, they must apply for this authorization online.

The European Commission has made it clear that pre-registration for Etias will be mandatory from the beginning of 2024 for all visa-free visitors from outside the Schengen zone.

ETIAS is a multi-entry electronic permit that clears a visitor for visits. The project is a pre-screening program for detecting persons who may pose any kind of threat to Hungary or neighboring nations. The sole purpose of Etias is to increase border security, and it is available in different forms, such as business, tourism, transit, and medical treatment. Holders of ETIAS can stay in Hungary for 90 days in 180 days.

Key Information About Hungary ETIAS

Before completing your ETIAS application, take your time to read these important details to guide your actions.

Only For Visa-Exempt Visitors:  This online authorization is only for visitors who hold passports of visa-exempt countries. Once ETIAS becomes active in 2024, it will become mandatory for visitors from visa-exempt countries. If you are not from a visa-exempt country, apply for a Schengen visa instead.

Primary Destination Rule:  According to Schengen rules, visitors with the intention to visit multiple countries in the Schengen zone must make their way to the country that issued the authorization first before going to a different country. As a first-time user, make sure you visit Hungary first if you wish to visit multiple countries.

The 180-Day Cycle:  Always respect the 180-day cycle for visitors. According to the rules, visitors must stay for at most 90 days within a 180-day period. If you have any intention of staying for much longer, you should get a national visa instead. Or better still, exit the Schengen zone, then re-enter once the last cycle is complete. The cycle starts counting when you set foot in any country in the Schengen zone.

Use Same Passport:  Your ETIAS is attached to your passport, so make sure you always travel with the same passport anytime you visit Hungary or any country in the Schengen zone.

Not For Work:  This approval is not for work. You must not seek or enter into any employment contract during your visit.

Expiration:  Your ETIAS expires in one of two ways. After three years from the day it is approved or once the passport it is attached to expires or whichever comes first. If your passport will expire in less than 6 months, apply for a new one before applying for the ETIAS.

Security Screening:  Once you submit your data, the system will screen multiple Ross security databases within and outside Europe. Applications that trigger security alert risks will be denied, while those that do not will be approved. However, the European Commission has noted that persons denied may apply and be accepted based on their circumstances. Also, note that applications not accepted or denied will be forwarded to the Local unit of the Hungarian authorities for manual vetting.

Common reasons for Hungary Schengen visa refusals in India

Despite best efforts, there can be instances where visa applications get rejected. Understanding the common reasons for these refusals can help avoid them. Here are some typical reasons:

Incomplete application : Failure to fill out the entire application form or not providing all required documents can lead to rejection.

Invalid travel insurance : Your travel insurance must cover medical expenses up to €30,000. If it doesn't meet this criterion, your application could be refused.

Inadequate financial proof : Lack of sufficient proof that you can financially support your stay in Hungary can result in visa refusal.

Unclear travel purpose : If your visit's purpose is unclear, your visa application may be rejected.
