Tickets for shakespeare's globe theatre in london, page content.

What better way to have a genuine London experience than to see a play at Shakespeare's Globe theatre? The Globe theatre is a reconstructed version of the original Globe theatre that was built in 1599. Thanks to the theatre being re-built in the 1990s you can now see a Shakespearian play in authentic Shakespearian surroundings. The Globe theatre is a roofless wooden 'O' shape - plays are available to see during the warm months of the year (see below for more details on what constitutes the theatre season).

One of the entertaining aspects of the Globe Theatre is that, like in its heyday, people from all walks of life are welcome. If you are strapped for cash, you can buy affordable tickets in the pit of the theatre where it is standing place - where the 'unwashed' would watch the plays during Shakespeare's time (see below for more details)!

Please note - this page deals with tickets for plays at the Globe theatre. If you would like to know about getting tickets for the Shakespeare's Globe exhibition and tour (tour options, what the tour is like, ticket prices, how to get tickets and contact details), see our Globe Theatre tours page .

To gain a more general overview of what to expect on a trip to the Globe Theatre (location, contact details, photos, the history of the placer and the activities that are on offer), you can check our General Guide to Shakespeare's Globe in London page .

Ticket options for the theatre

The programme at Shakespeare's Globe theatre is like any other modern theatre - it changes on a regular basis and plays are often given interesting new takes on the classic. Therefore, to find out what play will be showing at the Globe Theatre during your visit (if any - see below about the theatre season at the Globe) it is best to check the Programme page on the Official Shakespeare's Globe website . On this page you will find descriptions of each play that will be showing, including information on the background of the play and details of who will be performing.

Theatre season at the Globe:

Each year the theatre season at the Globe varies slightly. It tends to run from the end of April to the end of October. However if you would like to know the exact dates of the theatre season for the year of your visit you will need to check the Official Globe Theatre website .

Ticket options within the theatre:

Within Shakespeare's Globe the seating has been arranged how it would have been in Shakespeare's time when the poor would stand in the pit and the bourgeoisie had one of the best views from their decorated boxes looking down on the play. To look at a seating plan of the theatre and check how much ticket prices vary depending on where you are sitting, see the Official Globe Theatre Website seating plan page .

How to get tickets

It is possible to book tickets for the Globe theatre by the following methods:

Ticket prices

The ethos of the team at the Globe theatre is that theatre should be for everybody and thus ticket prices for the plays reflect this. Ticket prices will vary from year to year and will depend on where you will be sitting or standing in the theatre. To find out the prices of the tickets and to choose a seat that best suits you, see the Official Shakespeare's Globe website ticket prices page .

How to get discount tickets

There are a number of different ways in which you can buy discounted or affordable tickets for plays at the Globe. The cheapest way to see a play at the Globe is to buy tickets for the area called the 'Yard'. This is an area at the front of the theatre where you will have to stand during the play. There is space for 700 people in this area for every performance. According to the theatre, these spaces will offer you one of the best views of the stage, however, you should be warned that you will not be able to sit down on the floor and you cannot bring any of your own seating. If you want one of the cheap tickets you must be willing to stand for the duration of the play.

'Yard' Tickets Price:  £5.00

It is also possible to get discounted tickets for the Globe theatre if you are registered as disabled or are buying tickets for a group of more than 14 people. For more information on getting these discounted tickets, call the number below.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Shakespeare's Globe in 2024

Shakespeare's globe ultimate guide.

Nestled near the Tate Modern and the Millennium Bridge, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre may seem a little out of place. It was, after all, designed after the original Globe Theatre which was built in 1599 (and then later rebuilt in 1614 after it was destroyed by a fire).

When it was first constructed, the Globe Theatre was located in the epicentre of London’s entertainment district on the Bankside in Southwark. Performances were put on by the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, and it is said that Shakespeare himself even sat in the theatre to watch his own performances.

The modern-day Globe Theatre is an oak-and-thatch replica of the original 1599 Elizabethan playhouse (which once sat about 200 metres from where the Globe stands today), and as a result concertgoers will feel as if they’ve been transported back to Elizabethan times when watching a performance.

Today the theatre serves as an open-air venue dedicated to the work of Shakespeare, and some of the many performances visitors can still watch at the playhouse include A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, The Taming of the Shrew, and many, many more. Depending on the time of year, several plays, operas, comedy shows and candlelit concerts are held inside the playhouse as well.

Visitors can sit on the wooden benches (which can sit up to 340 people) surrounding the stage, or in any of the two tiers of galleried seating, and there are also productions, talks and courses held in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse (a candlelit indoor theatre located inside the Globe’s building). Attendees can even stand in the yard directly in front of the stage, just as they did in the original theatre during Elizabethan times. It's a great place to visit on your own or with a guide on a walking tour, so you can dive into the history of arts in London.

Getting There

Visiting the globe theatre.

Be sure to check the weather forecast before booking your tickets, as the standing area is open-air and exposed to the elements. Since umbrellas are not allowed, it's wise to bring a raincoat and warm shoes. If you’re worried about standing in the rain, there are seats available that are protected under a sound roof.

Keep in mind that the cloakroom is closed, so you’ll need to store any large bags offsite. Only necessary medical equipment and buggies are permitted. Photography and video recording are not allowed during workshops, performances, screenings, or tours, and photography may be restricted at certain times.

Assisted performances, such as relaxed, captioned, audio-described, and signed, are available. Check the official website in advance to book your spot.

The Swan Bar & Restaurant, located next to Shakespeare’s Globe, offers indoor and outdoor seating with stunning views of St. Paul’s Cathedral across the river. They serve drinks, dining, afternoon tea, weekend brunch, Sunday roasts, and more.

If you plan to visit the shop, please note that it currently only accepts contactless payments.

What’s on at shakespeare's globe theatre.

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre is not just a place to see a play: it is a unique experience that merges classic and modern stagecraft to memorable effect. As a top destination for UK and international tourists, you will find plenty of Shakespeare plays performed at the venue this year including The Comedy of Errors . If you want to get a taste of the Globe’s new writing, we also recommend catching Princess Essex . The story of a trailblazing beauty pageant entrant in Edwardian England is a modern history play that will keep the Globe Groundlings - also known as standing audience members - enthralled just as much as the Bard’s greatest works!

About the Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

Opened in 1997 by director and actor Sam Wanamaker, Shakespeare's Globe gives audiences the opportunity to experience theatrical events in a way no other venue can replicate. The building sits close to the site of the first Globe Theatre, which opened in 1599. Wanamaker wanted to match the dimensions, materials and playing conditions of the original as closely as possible and worked tirelessly for over 20 years to achieve his vision.  The Globe is constructed entirely from timber and natural materials, with a thatched roof - the first permitted in London since the Great Fire of 1666 - and thrust stage. Visitors can sit on benches or stand in the yard as "Groundlings" during the venue’s summer performance season. Over the winter months, visitors to Shakespeare's Globe can enjoy candlelit performances at the indoor Sam Wanamaker Playhouse . Artistic Directors at the Globe include Academy Award winning actor Mark Rylance and theatre practitioner Emma Rice. Rice‘s tenure lasted just a few months; the board cited concerns over authenticity and the use of lighting technology in this decision.  The Globe Theatre programme includes Shakespeare's plays and brand new writing. It has produced many hugely successful productions, including Morgan Lloyd-Malcom’s Emilia and Lucy Bailey’s notoriously gory staging of Titus Andronicus , which made headlines for the number of Groundlings fainting during its run.
