Private Tours of Paris Reviews

1. paris in a day: montmartre, eiffel tower, seine river cruise & louvre.

  • Departure:  Anvers, 75018 Paris
  • Duration: 9 hours
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Includes:  Skip the Line Eiffel Tower tickets (non-guided), licensed English-speaking guide, small groups (maximum of 15), Skip the Line Louvre tickets, 1 hour Seine River Cruise (flexible ticket), Montmartre guided neighborhood walk, food & drinks
  • Other: Convenient way to see big attractions located all across the city

This is one of the most popular Paris city tours out there, as it covers some of the biggest attractions in the city. Not only that, but it allows you to see them in the most convenient way possible: without having to wait in lines and having your own personal tour guide to teach you about everything!

At 9 hours long, the Paris in a Day: Montmartre, Eiffel Tower, Seine River Cruise & Louvre tour is not one to miss!

Start out with the rest of your small group and guide at Montmartre hill. You’ll all meet here, and as the groups are never more than 15 people, it’s much easier to see more places. Take the funicular to Sacre-Coeur Basilica, which is incredibly stunning – both inside and out!

From here, you’ll see some of the most impressive views of this sprawling city! The winding streets surrounding it are quite fascinating in themselves, so you’ll make a few stops along the way. First, at a local vineyard, artist hot-spot Place du Tertre, and a reconstructed windmill!

Next, head to Ile de la Cite, or Island on the Seine , is literally an island in the middle of the river in the city center. It once served as a fortress in the 4 th century, but also was inhabited by the Parisii , which is where the city gets its name!

Notre Dame towers over the island, and while it’s not currently open to the public, it’s also quite a sight to see.

Next up is the legendary Louvre! This museum is absolutely massive, and really impossible to see everything in just a day. However, you will be able to see some of the most famous works, including da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

After taking a brief subway ride to Le Trocadero, you and your group will be standing in front of the iconic Eiffel Tower from Trocadero Plaza. This is one of the best viewpoints of the tower, as it’s far and high enough to admire it in its entirety and oftentimes doesn’t have many crowds.

Your guide will also provide you with a skip-the-line ticket to head up to the second floor of the tower, along with a 1-hour Seine River cruise perfect for watching the sun set!

You and the rest of your group will meet your guide at a central location and start off by walking to the Musee du Louvre and Palais Royale. The Louvre is more than iconic, with some of the world’s most famous pieces of art.

However, the building itself also has a long and eventful history that your guide will tell you all about. The Jardin du Palais Royal used to be the residence of King Louis XIV, and is still decked out in enormous sculptures.

We hope you’ve worked up an appetite with all that walking, because you’ll then be doing some delicious bread-tasting! We all know that French baguettes are delicious, but they taste even better freshly-made in an early 20 th -century wooden oven!

Galerie Vivienne is a stunning passage, along with the Passage Choiseul. The covered passages date to the early 1800’s, and house the Theatre des Bouffes-Parisiens.

Next, check out the Palais Garnier, charmingly-dubbed the “Baroque Wedding Cake”. After seeing the architecture in person, you’ll clearly see why it’s earned this nickname.

You’ll start around 10 am, heading off to Trocadero first. This square has one of the most gorgeous observation decks in the world, and you’re sure to take some incredible photos here. Walk through the park and get up close to the tower.

Underneath the tower is pretty intricate and industrial, offering insight to how robust the structure is. Next, take a break and grab a bite to eat while taking in some further views of the tower. After you’ve recharged, you will stop by Napoleon’s tomb, and then the Beaux-Arts-style, Grand Palais.

Continue on your excursion along the enormous avenue, Champs-Elysees. The avenue alone has quite the history, and along it sit 2 important plazas: Place de la Concorde and Place d’Etoile. Not to mention, the important Arc de Triomphe, which sits over/in the middle of it! It’s much bigger than we expected!

You’ll stop at each place for some photo ops, while your guide tells you the history behind them. Next, head over to Jardin des Tuileries, where various famous artworks make their home. However, the garden also has quite the history, being landscaped in the 1500’s by Catherine de’Medici!

We can’t forget seeing Notre Dame’s infamously intricate architecture, complete with the gargoyles and chimeras! Even though right now it’s closed to the public, just seeing the exterior really is something else.

Head over to Square Jean XXIII for a delicious French lunch in a charming café, where you can watch over the South Rose Window and other parts of Notre Dame cathedral.

Paris Travel Guide

In TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards 2019, Paris was ranked as the #2 Top Destination in the World. This is no surprise for a city famous for its food, art, and architecture.

Whether you’re looking for gourmet meals, a romantic getaway, a place to immerse yourself in fine art, or a family vacation, France’s capital city is a great destination for you.

Airports & Entry

The two best ways to travel to Paris are by air and by train.

Paris boasts 3 busy international airports which together form the world’s 5 th busiest airport combination and a major transport hub for Europe. Paris’ three international airports are Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris-Orly, and Beauvais-Tillé.

Paris is well served by a selection of budget airlines including Easyjet, Ryanair, French Bee, Transavia, and Norwegian. You can secure better deals by booking at least a month in advance and using a ticket price comparison website, like Omio . You can literally save hundreds of dollars by choosing the right flight. Because Paris is such a major transport hub, flights are very competitive.

Usually, you will find flying both the most affordable and easiest way to reach Paris. However, if you are traveling from a neighboring country, it is worthwhile checking into high-speed trains.

Paris is linked to neighboring countries by a network of high-speed rail links operated by SNCF . Although these trains take longer than flights, they transport their passengers from city center to city center. Flying, of course, usually requires a transfer to an airport some distance away from the city.

For example, if you’re traveling from London to Paris, a Eurostar train that passes through the famous Channel Tunnel will provide a relatively hassle-free journey when compared to flying. Also, in most cases, that journey will be quicker than flying because of the extra time taken up waiting for connections at the airports. And it also gives you bragging rights for using one of the world’s most famous undersea tunnels.

When planning your journey, compare the costs of flights and high-speed trains and decide which is the best option for you. Often flying will be cheapest, but if the cost isn’t too much more, the train will be relatively more comfortable and involve fewer complications.

Restaurants & Eating Out

Paris is recognized by many as the heart of the culinary world. Many internationally-acclaimed chefs trained there, and the terms used in gourmet kitchens worldwide originate in Paris. You won’t have any problem finding good food in the capital of France.

Traditional croissants are a great breakfast treat in any Parisian café. The best area for traditional cafés is the Boulevard Saint-Germain, a tree-lined avenue in the 6 th Arrondissement. The Neo Café is highly rated. But if you’re in a hurry and want your breakfast on the go, grab a fresh pain-au-chocolat from one of the family bakeries (patisseries).

Bo&mie in the 2 nd Arrondissement is the top-rated patisserie in Paris and close to attractions such as the Louvre and the Pompidou Center. In the early morning, you’ll often see Parisians walking out from patisseries with freshly baked baguettes. They do love freshly baked bread rather than long-life bread found on supermarket shelves.

If you want to find the most exclusive, Michelin-stared restaurants, explore the area around the Champs-Elysées. That’s where you’ll find many of the oldest restaurants in Paris. But, if you have a less discerning palate, the same area is where you’ll find McDonald’s, Burger King, and Starbucks.

The top-rated French gourmet restaurant here is Pierre Gagnaire on Rue Balzac. Be prepared to spend at least €200 per person and you will require a reservation.

While in Paris, you should try at least one distinctively French dish, like coq au vin or ratatouille. If you’re feeling courageous, you could opt for snails or frogs’ legs…just so you can say that you did.

You should consider taking a French cooking class while you are in Paris . Learn from the best and make the dishes you love at home!

Snacks & sweets

For traditional street food, try the amazing crepes that you can buy from many street corners. You can eat these tasty pancake treats while you walk with savory or sweet fillings.

Before you leave Paris, ensure you sample some of its amazing desserts. The Crème Brulée is a delicious traditional sweet, and meringues are sweet and satisfying but also very messy.

Nightlife & Entertainment

Paris is famous as a getaway for romantic weekends, so of course you’ll find a rich variety of nightlife.

The most famous nightspot in Paris is undoubtedly The Moulin Rouge in the area of the 18 th arrondissement known as Pigalle. This historic cabaret club is where the Can-can dance was created and a favorite haunt for many famous celebrities over the past century, from Toulouse-Lautrec to Frank Sinatra. You can enjoy a cabaret here for around €145 ($160).

However, be aware that Pigalle is regarded as the red-light district. Watch out for overly friendly ladies and gentlemen inviting you into dance clubs in this district.

Champs-Elysées

The most exclusive nightclubs, restaurants, and live music venues are found in the 8 th arrondissement, around the Champs-Elysées. Many of the clubs here are impossible to enter unless you are a recognizable celebrity, royal, or billionaire.

You’ll need to dress up smart to get into any of the decent clubs here. And if you do enter, be careful whose drink you nudge and spill! But a word of caution — the exclusive clubs in this area also include a few strip clubs! They’re very different from the strip clubs in Pigalle, but still strip clubs. One to watch out for is the famous Whisper Club .

An example of a bar in palatial settings where you might be concerned about scuffing the silverware and smearing the crystal is simply called Le Bar in the George V Four Seasons Hotel.

This same area is also home to more touristy haunts which you won’t find so difficult to enter. However, these often contain more tourists than locals, so don’t expect a uniquely French experience. The club with the most laid-back reputation is the Dogstar Club . You might get past the bouncers without a $10,000 watch on your wrist and a designer cocktail dress.

Place Vendome

The 1 st arrondissement is literally the center of the city around the Louvre and where you’ll find boutique hotels with historic bars frequented by celebrities and the beautiful rich. Most of these hotels have strict dress rules to enter the bar, and you’ll need a healthy income to survive the night.

The area around the Metro Bastille, on the borders of the 4 th , 11 th , and 12 th arrondissement, is where the younger and more relaxed crowd hang out. You’ll find decent nightclubs, cafés, live music venues, and dive bars frequented by local 20-somethings.

Check out the Niki Club on the Rue de Lappe for a casual night, or maybe the Black Star Club in Passage Thiere if you enjoy live rock music or jazz.

If you enjoy the LGBT scene, the Marais district in the southern part of the 3 rd arrondissement and northern part of the 4 th is where you’ll find welcoming cafés, bars, and live music venues where all genders and sexualities are made welcome. Café Cox is one bar legendary for its welcomes.

Getting Around

When you’re trying to find your way around, you might get confused by the way addresses sometimes emphasize the arrondissement, sometimes the name of the area, and sometimes the zip code. To simplify this a little, the last two digits of the zip code are the arrondissement number. So, the Eiffel tower is at 75007, meaning it’s in the 7 th arrondissement.

You might be surprised to discover it’s not in the 1 st arrondissement since it’s so central to the city. However, the way the arrondissements work is beginning in the Louvre — the 1 st arrondissement and true center of Paris (where the king’s palace is) — and then radiates out from there. The first layers are numbered from the north clockwise and wrap around the central arrondissements. The arrondissements get larger as you get further from the center.

Most of the main attractions are found in arrondissements 1 through 8, which form the core of the city. This means that it’s possible to walk from attraction to attraction. But if you want to go a little quicker, Paris boasts an affordable and efficient public transport system. And the best way to get around is on the Metro.

With 300 Metro stations, everywhere in Paris is within a 10-minute walk of a station. A Paris Visite Travel Pass provides unlimited Metro travel within a specified zone for a set period of time. The Travel Pass may also be used on trams, buses, and the RER underground train system. A 1-day ticket for Zones 1 to 3 costs €12 ($13).

There are even more bus stops than Metro stations and bus services run every 5 to 7 minutes. This means that buses are often more convenient for shorter journeys than the Metro. Since a Travel Pass allows you to swap between the Metro and buses, you can simply take the bus when it’s most convenient but use the Metro for longer destinations. To learn which would be most convenient for your planned journey, you can check the route maps on the RATP (Regie Autonome des Transports) website .

Hire bicycles

Like many capital cities in Europe, Paris has a public bicycle hire scheme. Around the city, you’ll find 1,800 Velib bike stations with 24,000 bicycles. You simply require a credit card with a chip to rent a Velib bike.

There are over 16,000 taxis in Paris. Taxis are an expensive but convenient mode of transport. You can take a taxi from a taxi rank or hail one down in the street.

While you can opt to hire a car in Paris, be aware that Parisian drivers have a bad reputation for safety. Also, the congested roads are difficult to navigate and parking places rare. If you really want to enjoy your time in Paris, walk or use public transport.

Accommodations

When choosing where to stay in Paris, you should consider why you’re there. If your main interest is in taking your family to Disneyland, Paris, then you’ll find accommodation near there more spacious and much more affordable than most places in the city.

However, if you want to visit the historical and cultural attractions, then you should confine yourself to the central areas between the 1 st and the 8 th arrondissements, where hotels are within walking distance of the main sites.

Below, I’ve divided the kind of accommodation by area. However, this is only a rough guide. You’ll find 5-star luxury hotels in the budget and family areas, and I’ve previously stayed in a very cheap family guesthouse about 2-minutes-walk from the Arc de Triomphe.

You’ll find a lot of budget accommodation around the 5 th and part of the 6 th arrondissements simply because these areas are a little further from the most popular tourist attractions and famous streets.

But if you don’t mind a little more walking, the area of Montmartre is still pretty central and boasts character-filled, winding streets. And with Metro stations dotted all around the area, it’s as convenient as any other central location if you plan to get around on public transport.

An example budget hotel in this area is the Hotel Marignan  on a quiet street in the Latin Quarter. This historic hotel has hosted many famous guests, such as EE Cummings, and is within walking distance of Notre Dame.

The Rive Gauche area of the rest of the 6 th and the 7 th arrondissements is an easy walk from places like the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. This makes the affordable hotels there perfect for families with young and impatient kids who just want to get there quick. Many of the hotels in this area vary between small boutique hotels and cozy, family-run hotels.

The aptly named Eiffel Rive Gauche Hotel is super close to the Eiffel Tower and would provide a great base for your family to explore the French capital.

While a few of the most exclusive hotels are in the 1 st arrondissement, the main selection of high-class hotels is found along the Champs-Elysees in the 8 th arrondissement. You’ll notice this coincides with where the most Michelin-starred restaurants and high-class bars and clubs are, many of which are attached to or inside the luxury hotels.

In terms of distance, the 1 st and 8 th arrondissements are neighbors, with the Champ-Elysees running between the Louvre area in the 1 st and the Arc de Triomphe in the 8 th . Government officials and important people have long made their home in the 8 th arrondissement, and it is considered the cultural heart of the capital.

A great example of a luxury hotel in this area is the Hotel de Crillon , which looks more like a palace or museum than a working hotel.

Although it’s fairly inland, Paris still benefits from an oceanic climate with cool but mild winters and pleasantly warm summers. Generally, the city sees light rainfall distributed evenly through the year, though sudden heavy showers can occur.

Paris gets coldest in January, with an average daily high of 45 0 F and a low of 37 0 F. During spring, the temperatures warm so that by April it reaches an average high of 60 0 F and low of 45 0 F. Spring is a great time to visit Paris because the flowers are blooming all around the city and the summer crowds have yet to descend upon the city.

The hottest month of the summer is July, with an average high of 77 0 F and low of 60 0 F. That’s when the city becomes crowded with visitors from all around the world. By October, the average high drops to 61 0 F and the low to 49 0 F. The fall is another great time to visit because the weather isn’t too cold but the crowds have diminished and the trees have donned their beautiful autumnal cloaks.

Attractions

The main attractions radiate out from the center of the city, which is the 1 st arrondissement.

The Louvre Palace in the 1st arrondissement was the main residence of the Kings of France from the 14 th century onward. Today it is much better known as the home of the world’s greatest art museum, the Musée du Louvre . If you want to see such world-famous masterpieces as the Venus de Milo sculpture and the Mona Lisa painting, then you should head straight for the glass pyramid in front of the grand palatial building.

The great cathedral of Notre-Dame in the 4 th arrondissement is so spectacular and famous that I cannot justify leaving it out of this list. However, please note that the Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Paris is closed for at least the next four years and maybe more.

After the devastating fire of April 2019, the cathedral and nearby surrounding area were closed to public access until sufficient repairs can be made to make the area safe once again. You can still admire its amazing Gothic architecture from a distance and maybe catch a glimpse of some of the restoration work in progress.

Eiffel Tower

The most visited attraction in the center of Paris is the Eiffel Tower in the 7 th arrondissement. Although this renowned iron tower was erected as a temporary structure in 1889, it is still standing strong and looks good for another few centuries of service. The fact that it was the world’s tallest building when built is eye-opening when it is compared to the Empire State Building in NYC or the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, but it is still the best place for a panoramic view in Paris.

Arc de Triomphe

This triumphal arch in the 8 th arrondissement was commissioned by Napoleon but wasn’t built until 1836, long after his death. It stands on a huge roundabout at the northern end of the Champ-Elysees and is one of the most recognizable and photographed monuments in the capital. The Arc de Triomphe is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Flame of Remembrance that is kept alive in daily ceremonies.

You have to leave the city and travel 12 miles southwest to reach the Palace of Versailles , where Louis XIV moved his court in the 17 th century. Now this famous palace is a grand museum full of amazing reminders of the power of the great Sun King. Look around the interior and exterior of the palace for the many sun-emblems reminding visitors who lived here. But the true highlight for many visitors is the beautiful formal gardens that surround the palace.

Disneyland Paris

Also outside the city, despite its name, is Disneyland Paris, 20 miles to the east. This famous theme park is the most visited attraction in France. If you’re visiting Paris with children, you’ll probably want to devote two days to Disney because there are two separate parks here: Disneyland Park opened in 1992 and Walt Disney Studios Park opened in 2002. Inside both, you’ll find thrill rides for all ages as well as classic attractions, like actors dressed up as your favorite Disney characters and Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. The easiest way to get to Disney Paris is with a shuttle and entrance ticket deal .

Planning Tips

Paris is an amazing destination that should be on everyone’s bucket list. Here are 5 tips to help you on your way.

Tip #1: Watch out for Mondays and Tuesdays

When planning your itinerary for your stay in Paris, note that many major attractions, such as the Palace of Versailles and the catacombs, are closed on Mondays. A few attractions are closed on Tuesdays instead, including the Natural History Museum and the Pompidou Center. There are various major attractions open every day, like the Eiffel Tower and Disneyland Paris, so go there on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Tip #2: Buy unique souvenirs and gifts

Paris is, of course, the center of fashion. However, there is one relatively unfashionable item of dress that you might want to pick up during your stay in France’s capital city. The béret is the cliché headwear of France, and you’ll see cheap versions “made in China” in every souvenir shop you pass. But, if you want to buy the real thing, look out for clothing stores that sell bérets made in France. La Cerise Sur Le Chapeau is a well-known chain store around Paris that stocks French bérets.

However, if you’re looking for something distinctly Parisian that few people will own, how about a piece of the Eiffel Tower? Victor Lustig once sold the Eiffel Tower twice in an elaborate con, but this opportunity isn’t a scam like that. During repairs to the tower, inevitably some parts need to be replaced. The removed rivets are turned into unique souvenirs only available in the Eiffel Tower’s official gift shop.

Tip #3: Stay safe while visiting Paris

Although Paris is considered a relatively safe city, don’t forget that Kim Kardashian had all her bling stolen while she was staying in a vacation apartment there. Just like any other busy city, you will find purse-snatchers and pickpockets in crowded locations, especially around tourist hotspots.

Just use common sense. Keep your passport and other valuable documents in a hotel safe. Keep your money in a money belt. Don’t wear ostentatious jewelry in public places.

If you see abandoned packages or luggage in a crowded public place, especially a Metro station, distance yourself from the package and call 112. Paris is not a stranger to terrorist attacks.

Tip #4: Book in advance, especially during the summer

Paris is a popular destination in summer and during Christmas and Easter. Ensure you book your hotel rooms and any tours you wish to join well in advance of your vacation. You often get better air flight deals when you book in advance, and that is especially true during the summer.

The best time to visit Paris for bargain prices and fewer crowds is during the shoulder season—just before or just after summer. The weather is still fine, but there are simply fewer tourists.

Tip #5: Learn a few French phrases before traveling to Paris

The French are a proud people, not least of all Parisians. They are rightly concerned about the dilution of their native tongue by English words and phrases from Hollywood movies and internationally popular songs. So, if you’ve ever heard someone say that French people are rude, it’s probably because the person telling you expected them to speak English.

Almost all French people you’ll meet speak English. But if you greet them in French and use a few words and phrases like “merci” and “s’il vous plaît”, they will be more likely to treat you with respect in return. You don’t need to speak more than a handful of phrases, and you don’t even need a good accent. Parisians will appreciate your effort.

9 Great Paris Tours To Take in 2024 and Why

Sean Finelli Last Updated: February 21, 2024

“We protest against the erection of this useless and monstrous Eiffel Tower” was actually written in reaction to France’s most iconic monument in 1894. People were actually outraged by how ugly it was. Today, this 1,063-foot iron lattice tower still stands and attracts 7,000,000 visitors each year.

The long lines can be intimidating, and a visit is considered an all-day event. However, with our wide range of privileged access tours, Seine cruises, and family tours, we are sure to have something that fits your needs. There are two types of tourists! Those who stand in line and those who don’t. Which do you want to be?

1. Privileged Access Eiffel Tour at Night Tour with River Seine Cruise

People posing at the top of the Eiffel tower at night

Our Privileged Access Eiffel Tower Night Tour is a romantic evening without the lines. The tour starts at dusk with a boat ride on the Seine.

As the sun descends, the Eiffel Tower lights up and sparkles. Enjoy this magnificent sight with a glass of champagne and then climb the tower and witness amazing views of the city lit up at night.

2. Eiffel Tower Climbing Tour with Summit Access

You’ll climb the 674 steps to the tower’s second floor as your local guide tells you the story of its remarkable construction and troubled early history before taking the elevator to the summit for a well-earned rest and a truly remarkable view of Paris. Enjoy!

The Catacombs are a labyrinth that can only be seen a few months of the year, which is why lines to get in can be up to 5 hours long. Although the Catacombs are hundreds of miles long, only one mile is open to the public. Tickets sell out months in advance, but our tours come with skip-the-line access and privileged access to a number of chambers usually closed to the public.

1. Paris Catacombs Tour with Secret Rooms & Privileged Access

Parisian Catacombs

Why are skeletons stacked up in intricate designs below Paris? Where did these skeletons come from? Why are there 6,000,000 of them? Discover one of the great mysteries of Paris without spending long hours waiting outside on a Paris Catacombs tour .

With one of our passionate guides, explore underground Paris and learn the macabre details of these 200-year-old ossuaries. They will explain the incredible history, artwork, and unique architecture for a memorable experience of Paris’ Catacombs. See the tour itinerary, price, and description.

If you’re looking for amazing food, Paris is one of the best places to visit. There are more Michelin restaurants in this city than in any other city on Earth, and a local food tour is a fantastic way to experience Paris’ local food scene.

1. Le Marais Local Food Tour (Incredible Deal!)

Paris Food Tour Cheese Plate

Le Marais is the nerve center of gastronomical delights, which is why our Le Marais food tour is one of our most popular experiences. It’s also one of the only food tours in Paris to include oysters and a sit-down dinner! Enjoy a walking tour of the melting pot that is Le Marais, Normandy oysters and champagne, and falafel street food in the Jewish Quarter.

2. Chef Led Food Tour of Paris’ Montmartre District

Craving a genuine French culinary experience but don’t have the connections to call in a favor? That’s why we’ve joined forces with Chef PJ and his team of gastronomic experts, so you can join them in tasting Montmartre’s finest delicacies, indulge in a three-course feast with a wine pairing, and learn about iconic sites like the Moulin Rouge and the “I Love You” wall along the way

The Best Private Tours of Musée d’Orsay

When people think of Paris, they tend to think of the Louvre and Eiffel Tower, and for good reason. Both attractions are epic! That said, the Musée d’Orsay would be the number one museum in almost any other city on Earth if it wasn’t in Paris.

1. Private Musée d’Orsay Tour with Skip-the-Line Tickets

city tour of paris

While taking a private tour of any museum is a luxury, a private tour of Musée d’Orsay is even more amazing. Why? The museum doesn’t get the same crowds as the Louvre, and the paintings demand an explanation. They are all very beautiful and recognizable, but Impressionism is best explained through a lens into the artist’s life—something that a local tour guide does best in an intimate experience like a private tour. See the tour itinerary, price, and description.

1. Castles and Wine Tastings in the Loire Valley Day Trip

city tour of paris

One of my favorite things to do in Europe is explore the countryside. This is because the architecture is amazing, and the agriculture is heavily focused on wine, which together makes for a beautiful experience. I also love having countryside lunches. They tend to be hearty, warm, and full of wine!

The Loire Valley is famous for castles and amazing dry white wines.

Our day trip to the Loire Valley not only explores an amazing castle but also includes a stop at a vineyard for a wine tasting. It will make for an incredible memory you will hold dear for the rest of your days!

2. Pay Tribute To D-Day at Normandy Beach

omaha beach les braves

From “Saving Private Ryan” to stories from our ancestors, Normandy is famous for the great sacrifices of brave men in the face of tyranny. Today, you can visit different beaches from Omaha to Pointe du Hoc to pay respects. The beaches of Normandy, where World War II was viciously fought, have been kept as it was, down to bullet holes, craters, and cannon shells.

Our Normandy day trip of D-Day landing beaches visits Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, Pointe du Hoc, and even a Cider brewery—the region’s specialty. This day trip is most definitely long—14 hours in total—but if you have an extra day and are passionate about WWII, it’s well worth the time.

3. Explore the Champagne Region on a Day Trip

city tour of paris

Should you be looking for a day trip to remember—and you’re a fan of champagne—then a trip to the Champagne region is a must. The French countryside is waiting to take you on a culinary journey from wine cellars to champagne houses and a tasty spot for lunch.

This tour includes stops in the cities of Reims and Épernay, where you can see the famous Reims cathedral and explore Dom Perignon’s final resting place in the Benedictine monastery in Épernay. Your day in the countryside will be unforgettable.

Is it worth it to get a tour guide, though?

' data-src=

November 8, 2022

We might be biased, but it really is. You can either wander these amazing locations or monuments and not really know what’s so significant (or that you just passed the first painting by a world-famous painter), or you can learn so many incredible details and stories about these places and art. Tour guides truly do elevate your experience and make it more memorable.

Hello Brie, yeah, that makes sense. I also hate getting lost 😀 I have been looking around on your tours, and it seems that they are not customizable? Something like this https://gowithguide.com/france/paris

December 28, 2022

Our private tours can be customized within the museum or locations it already includes. So for instance, if you want more time in the Greek sculptures than in a room of impressionism, just let your guide know.

  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact your destination country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code PWE.
  • You will walk for at least 1 hour daily across mostly flat terrain, including cobblestone streets and paved roads, with some hills.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance. Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.
  • You should feel comfortable managing your own baggage at times.
  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special, individual mobility assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group as a whole enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing, individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • If you have any mobility concerns or physical restrictions, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in and depart from Paris. A representative from Go Ahead Tours will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It is preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs and shoulders (and entrance may be denied on this basis).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov .

  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
  • For a picnic with French flair, stop at a small grocery store for cheeses, pâtés , cured meats, fresh-baked bread, and fruit. In the cities, sidewalk vendors are known for their steaming crepes, while mouthwatering pastries and hot café au lait beckon from cafes. In restaurants, the prix fixe option is a popular way to enjoy a set three- or four-course menu for a good price.
  • Although lunch is generally served from noon until 2pm in France, dinner is served from 7:30pm onward. Those wishing to eat earlier can stop at a cafe, where light entrées and sandwiches are available throughout the afternoon and evening.
  • Cuisine in the Normandy region of France on the tour extension is known for its fresh flavors. Chicken, rabbit, and duck are staples, and you can find fish and shellfish in its coastal towns. The abundance of dairy farms throughout the region means many dishes are accompanied by cheeses and creams. Normandy is also famous for its apples, which are used to create cider and Calvados , or apple brandy.
  • France operates on the European standard 220-240 volts and uses Types C, E, or F plugs with two small, round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other electrical device without a built-in converter.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or as cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it is usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotel may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities cannot be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • France is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm on tour.
  • You will use the euro on this tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you are on your tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for excursions.
  • Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for your card to be charged.
  • Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See page four of your tour itinerary for more information.

Table of contents, the best time for visiting paris, what to pack on your trip to paris, safety precautions to have a fun time in paris, french words and phrases you should know, where to stay during your first time in paris, navigating the paris metro, etiquette for dining: greet, pay and tip at paris restaurants, plan your first time in paris with aaa.

If you are planning a trip for your first time in Paris, let this be your guide to the basics. It will help you decide the best time to go, give you packing tips, teach you some introductory French words you should know and share best practices on tipping at restaurants in Paris. I'll also go over the best places to stay and safety tips as well as navigating Paris on public transport. I’ve spent time in Paris, taking a train from Munich, Germany, to Gare de l’Est station in Paris. Upon arrival, I hopped on the Metro to my hotel on Caulaincourt in the Montmartre neighborhood situated outside of central Paris. I’ve taken the Metro into and around Paris during my time in the city.

Paris is a beautiful destination and has earned its popularity with wonderful museums, picturesque streets and delicious cuisine. With a little help from this guide, you'll learn what you need to know before visiting Paris.

city tour of paris

  • Peak season: June through August

These summer months see the biggest crowds and warmest temperatures. The weather in Paris is pretty temperate with average summer temperatures with daily highs in the 70s and lows ranging from high 50s to low 60s in degrees Fahrenheit, though Paris does experience heat waves with temperatures occasionally climbing into the high 80s. Because of Paris's popularity during these months, room rates are the most expensive.

  • Shoulder season: April through May and September through November.

In spring, Parisians enjoy average highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. Flowers start to bloom adding a natural beauty to the city. Both fall and spring see average temperatures in the 60s, sometimes the low 70s, and lows in the mid-40s from September through October. It gets chillier in November with average highs in the low 50s.

During these periods, room rates in Paris are reduced and crowds decrease. There will still be lines at attractions, so continue to plan ahead and book tickets in advance to minimize wait times in lines.

  • Offseason: December through February

Average winter temperatures in Paris range from highs in the low 50s to lows in the high 30s. December is the warmest winter month while February is the coldest. It doesn't snow often in Paris, but on the occasion it does, it typically occurs in January or February. These are the lowest traveled months. Room rates are the cheapest, and you are most likely to snag a deal on a flight during this time — one reason why I traveled to Europe in December.

Outdoor activities in winter will be minimal, so you may not want to grab a sandwich from a boulangerie and picnic in the park like so many do in summer. However, you will see the smallest crowds. This means you can get away with not booking tickets well in advance, but it's still a good idea to purchase tickets for attractions ahead of time. Many Paris attractions have security lines, so even during this period, a timed ticket will help get you through this process and into attractions more quickly. The smaller crowds mean an easier time at some of the museums, too. When I went to the Louvre in December, I saw the Mona Lisa with a wait time of only a few minutes versus the hour it can take in the summer.

Most of my advice for packing for a Paris trip is the same as my advice for packing essentials for any trip to Europe . Opt for versatile clothing that you can style into multiple outfits, and if traveling for two or more weeks, consider doing laundry to minimize the amount of luggage packed. After all, if you are over the airline's minimum weight, you'll be charged extra. Some of my more specialized or important-to-remember advice can be found below.

Shoes: It rains fairly evenly throughout the year in Paris. Storms are typically short-lived, but just in case you happen to find yourself in inclement weather, I suggest wearing a pair of water-resistant sneakers on days you plan to do a lot of walking and sightseeing. There is nothing like having wet feet all day to remind you how comfortable and important having dry feet is.

Outside of that, you'll want to pack a pair of dress shoes if you plan to do anything that requires fancier attire like a nice dinner in Paris.

Electronics and travel adapters: I like traveling with a portable charger or power bank. This way, I'm never at risk of my phone dying. I use map apps and translator apps to help navigate unfamiliar places and understand different languages, so it's important to me to always have a working phone.

Also, pack a travel adapter for your electronic devices. France uses a differently shaped plug than those in the U.S. I have a round one that has a few outlets and a hand-wound extension cord. It fits into my luggage nicely and is super convenient in hotel rooms. The extension cord and multiple plugs mean I can set it on the side table for maximum convenience, and my travel partner can use it too.

Purses and backpacks: Unfortunately, in the busiest parts of Paris, you may unknowingly encounter pickpockets, so if you travel with a purse, have a crossbody bag that fits close to your body and has zipper closures. If you prefer to carry a backpack, carry one with zipper closures or one that otherwise cannot be easily opened by a pickpocket. Whether carrying a purse or backpack, keep valuables like money, credit cards and ID's in the most interior pockets — ideally in a zipper pocket — and ensure your bag is securely closed. This minimizes the chances of being a victim of theft should a pickpocket target you.

Consider the size of your bag. Many Paris attractions such as the Eiffel Tower , the Louvre, Saint-Chapelle and others require visitors to go through security. This process is quicker if you are carrying only necessary items in a small bag. Local attractions also typically have a maximum size for bags as well, even if they offer cloakrooms. The maximum size of bags for many attractions is 22 x 13 x 7 inches, though exact measurements vary by attraction. Avoid difficulty with entering attractions by checking bag policies at the attractions you plan to visit and complying with their rules.

city tour of paris

Like many big cities that are popular travel destinations, Paris attracts pickpockets and other dishonest people who try to take advantage of tourists. With a few commonsense measures, you can minimize your chances of having your things stolen, which can ruin an otherwise great vacation.

First off, scammers and pickpockets are most likely to frequent the busiest places, like around the Eiffel Tower. Whether carrying a purse or backpack, minimize the valuables that you carry during the day, and only carry the cash you need for the day and no more. Your bag should be securely closed with valuables like cash and IDs tucked away in an inside pocket, preferably one that zips closed. That way if a pickpocket does target you, they'll be much less likely to succeed in accessing your things. If you carry cash, only have on you what you need for the day.

You also might see folks around the busiest landmarks and attractions with clipboards asking you or fellow tourists to sign petitions or claiming to work for a charity. The Paris tourism office advises that these are frequently tactics to distract you from pickpockets. It's best to not engage and move on if anyone like this approaches you.

Also be wary of folks selling souvenirs from blankets or walking around selling trinkets. They can often get verbally aggressive, demanding you purchase items that you've shown interest in, especially if you've picked up an item. Avoid these folks, and shop for souvenirs at any of the many kiosks and gift shops that are all over Paris.

I haven't encountered anything like this, but I have read stories of people handing flowers to someone catching them unaware, then demanding payment. If it seems like someone is handing you an item as gift, don't accept. Either refuse or ask how much.

Even if you've never studied the French language, that's okay. You can memorize a few key phrases and words that will help you respectfully navigate the city. Most Parisians will be able to communicate with you in English, but start conversations in French. By displaying a little effort with the language and attempting to comply with local etiquette, you will typically engender a more pleasant interaction than walking up to someone, immediately speaking English and expecting them to answer in English.

Know these phrases:

  • Bonjour - Hello
  • Bonne soirée - Good evening
  • Madame and monsieur - Ma'am and sir
  • S'il vous plaît - Literally translates to "if you please," but in practical use, it is the same as saying "please"
  • Parlet-vous anglais? - Do you speak English?
  • Merci and merci beaucoup - Thank you and thank you very much
  • Au revoir - Goodbye

When you enter an establishment, say, "Bonjour, madame," if speaking to a woman or, "Bonjour, monsieur," if speaking to a man. A simple, "bonjour" is also acceptable. It is an expected greeting when entering places.

If a Parisian corrects your manners or pronunciation, take it in stride. While it might feel rude or cause embarrassment in the U.S., it's usually meant to be helpful and not judgmental. French people tend to be blunter and not dance around these kinds of topics.

Also, if you have a phone plan that allows you to use data in other countries, download a translation app. It is a helpful tool for understanding menus as well as signage in grocery stores and shops. It can also facilitate communication should you encounter someone who does not speak English.

Whether staying in the city for a week or longer or simply a short Paris vacation , there are many beautiful areas to stay in on your first visit to Paris. It might be hard to choose, but where you choose to stay depends on the vibe you are looking for and your budget. Also consider amenities; like much of Europe, hotel rooms in Paris tend to be smaller than in the U.S. Air conditioning is also not as common, so if it's important to you, ensure that the hotel has it before booking.

Another key factor in choosing a hotel is location. The public transportation system in Paris is convenient, so if you plan to travel to areas outside of walking distance, check to see that a metro station is near your hotel.

Also consider the part of Paris you wish to stay in. Paris is divided into 20 districts called arrondissements that are numbered 1-20. For example, Central Paris along the River Seine is where many of the top things to do in Paris that tourists wish to visit, but it can get pricey like in the 1st arrondissement. There are other neighborhoods, too, that tend to appeal to young travelers or those who want to visit central Paris but would rather stay in a quieter part of the city. Below are my recommendations on where to stay on your first trip to Paris.

Arrondissement 1: The 1st arrondissement is a desirable spot for people who want maximum convenience and don't mind being in a more touristy area. It's next to the River Seine and within the district is the Louvre, the Palais Royal, Les Halles, and it's across the river from the Musee d'Orsay. The hotels in this area tend to be luxury hotels and charge a premium for their location.

Recommendations on where to stay:

  • Drawing Hotel
  • Renaissance Paris Vendome Hotel
  • Le Roch Hotel and Spa

Latin Quarter: The Latin Quarter, with its storied academic and literary reputation, is an excellent option for young people and student travelers. In this section of Paris, you'll find the Sorbonne University and cheap eats. Sure, you'll find some touristy shopping areas, but there is also Place Saint-Michel, Panthéon and Jardin du Luxembourg . Like most places in Paris, it's easy to hop on the Metro and head to other top spots in the city.

  • Hotel Henri Iv-Rive Gauche
  • Les Dames Du Pantheon
  • Parc Saint Severin

Marias: The neighborhood of Marais straddles the 3rd and 4th arrondissements. The hotels here can be more budget-friendly than hotels in the 1st arrondissements, but you'll still be close to landmarks and museums that first-time visitors to Paris typically don't want to miss. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to keep you entertained in the evenings. Marais is also an LGBTQ+-friendly neighborhood with gay and lesbian bars.

  • Jeanne D'Arc Le Marais
  • Hc Hotel De Neuve
  • Hotel Jules and Jim

Montmartre: The neighborhood of Montmartre is in the 18th arrondissement. It's known for its hills and has more of a neighborhood feel than many other popular spots, but it's still easy to access the center of Paris with the most popular landmarks and attractions with a short ride on the Metro. It's also the neighborhood where the Moulin Rouge is located. Montmartre is a wonderful choice for people who like more of a local feel or want to be outside of the busiest parts of Paris.

  • HôTel Mercure Paris Montmartre Sacré-Coeur
  • Monsieur Aristide Hotel
  • B Montmartre Hotel

Paris is pretty easy to get around by walking and by using public transportation. The city offers an extensive subway system called the Metropolitan, aka the Metro, as well as buses, trams and the RER trains. If you aren't used to navigating public transportation, it might feel intimidating, but you'll feel like a pro after a few trips, especially with the help of a maps app on your phone. I found that my maps app was all I needed to navigate around Paris, so if your phone plan allows you to use data abroad, simply enter in your destination into your maps app for directions. Your maps app of choice should be able to give you directions to the nearest metro station or bus stop and tell you how many stops you'll have to be on the train or bus as well as transfers.

Before you get on public transportation, you need to decide what kind of tickets to purchase. You can opt to buy a single-ride ticket called "t+ tickets." If you purchase t+ tickets, buying 10 at a time will get you a discount, but unused tickets cannot be refunded. T+ tickets can be used on all metro, tram and bus lines. You can also use the RER trains as long as you stay within Paris, so you cannot travel to Disneyland Paris , the Palace of Versailles or the airports with this ticket. You can transfer up to 90 minutes with a single ticket.

You also can opt for the Paris Visite pass that covers zones 1-3 (Paris) or zones 1-5 (greater Paris including Versailles, Disneyland Paris and the airports). This pass is available in 1-, 2-, 3- and 5-day increments. The Paris Visite pass is a little expensive but may be worth it if you plan to use public transportation frequently or enjoy the peace of mind of having a single ticket that covers your transportation for the duration of your stay. For your Paris Visite pass to be valid, you must write your first and last name on the ticket.

Tickets can be purchased in the airport at the train station, as well as train stations within Paris. There are vending machines in which you can make your selections or purchase tickets from a person at a service window in the station. Some ticket types can also be purchased on your phone via the Île-de-France Mobilités app. At the time of publication, t+ tickets can be purchased on the app, and you can use your phone as the ticket. The Paris Visite passes, however, are not available on the app. You also can use the app to refill your metro card or that of other members of your party since you may not share metro cards or tickets — even if they are loaded with multiple rides.

When entering a café or restaurant, remember to greet the person at the door with "bonjour, madame" or "bonjour, monsieur."

At restaurants and cafes, don't expect service to be the same as in the U.S. Service in Paris is more minimal with the intent of giving people time to eat and linger if they wish. If you order water, you can specify that you want tap water or water in a carafe, unless you want bottled water, which will cost additional. You can also order a bottle of sparkling water.

When you are ready for the check, you'll have to get the server's attention and ask for it. You can do this by catching the eye of the server and if needed, give a quick raise of your hand. If the server is passing by in earshot of you and not engaged with other patrons, you can request their attention by saying, "S'il vous plaît."

When it comes to tipping, it can feel intimidating coming from the U.S. because it is expected in American establishments. In France, however, a service fee is automatically added to all restaurant bills, so tipping in Paris is not necessary. If you've ordered a meal and feel the service warrants a tip, you can leave a euro or two on the table, but there is no pressure to do so. If at a café and ordering a coffee, round up to the nearest dollar when paying in cash, leaving the change for the server. Tipping on credit cards is not common.

A tour of Paris: The men's and women's Olympic road races highlight city's spectacular sights

PARIS (AP) — The road races in cycling at the Olympics are an opportunity for the host city to shine.

The routes that the men and women traverse over several grueling hours and hundreds of kilometers of racing typically pass some of its most iconic historical and cultural landmarks. They provide a stunning backdrop to the marquee event of the cycling program at the Summer Games, while making for spectacular pictures on TV as the riders zip by at high speeds.

Few cities can match Paris when it comes to historical and cultural landmarks.

The course for the men covers 273 kilometers (170 miles) on Saturday while the women covers 158 kilometers (98 miles) on Sunday. And here is a look at what riders will see as they covered the cobbles and tarmac in the race for a medal:

Pont d'Iena and the Eiffel Tower

The start of the men's and women's road races is the Pont d'Iena, the bridge crossing the River Seine commissioned by Napoleon to celebrate his victory at the Battle of Jena. It connects the Trocadéro on the Right Bank, which was the highlight of the opening ceremony just over a week ago, to the Eiffel Tower on the Left Bank, where the Olympic beach volleyball stadium was built.

Palace of Versailles

The races will head west out of Paris on their way to Versailles, the former royal hunting lodge-turned-opulent residence that was commissioned by King Louis XIV and used by Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. The spectacular palace is a UNESCO world heritage site. It contains more than 2,300 rooms, including the famed Hall of Mirrors, along with picturesque gardens that have served as the backdrop for Olympic equestrian events during the Paris Games.

The French Countryside

The road races will continue deep into the countryside. They pass the Vélodrome National de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, where the French completed the first podium sweep of an event at the Summer Games in a century in men's BMX racing Friday night , and where track cycling begins Monday. They also will flash by Le Golf National, the site of the 2018 Ryder Cup and the men's and women's Olympic golf tournaments , before hitting the Vallée de Chevreuse, where the Yvette River flows.

Sightseeing in Paris

The parade of iconic locations truly begins when the riders return to Paris. They will catch a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, where the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci hangs, and Palais Garnier, the famed opera house. Later, they traverse the Canal St. Martin, which runs south to the Seine, and visit lesser known sights such as Café des Deux Moulins, named in part for the nearby Moulin Rouge and famous after appearing in the film "Amélie."

Montmartre and Sacré-Coeur

The men's and women's races will likely be decided by finishing circuits at Montmartre , the hill in the northern part of Paris that is popular among artists and offers grand vistas of the city. The sharp climbs and uneven cobbled surfaces will make for a difficult test for the riders, but the sight of brightly colored jerseys whizzing by the white-domed basilica of Sacré-Coeur should provide one of the most memorable moments of the Olympic road race.

The race to the finish

After their third trip up Montmartre, riders head down toward the Seine and cross the Pont du Carrousel, which connects the Louvre on one bank to Musée d'Orsay on the other bank. The roads eventually widen as riders take a right-hand turn and follow the river back to the finish, where they cross in front of the Eiffel Tower on a flat run-in to the line.

“The routes of the Olympic road cycling events will showcase the beauty of Paris in the most captivating way,” Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo said of the course. “Trocadéro, Montmartre, Bois de Vincennes, Pont Alexandre III — some of the capital’s most beautiful sites — will serve as the backdrop for exciting races, bringing joy to cyclists and spectators alike.”
