Sunday’s bus tour through parts of Western Pennsylvania by Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz was an opportunity for them to connect with people in a more personal way that rallies at stadiums and other large venues can’t match.

Harris and Walz were joined by their spouses “for a bus tour across a crucial part of this state, in a political show of force and call to action before Democrats kick off their national convention in Chicago,” the Washington Post reported.

Business leaders should take note of the efforts by the two running mates to inject a more personal touch into what’s become a frenetic race for the White House. Getting closer—literally—to their audiences can help politicians and corporate executives strengthen their image, credibility, and power of their messages.

Creating An Image

Bus tours have important advantages and benefits for presidential and other candidates. They can help make politicians appear more approachable, relatable, and conversational then they would otherwise come across when giving speeches in auditoriums or sports arenas.

Campaign bus tours provide news organizations with good visuals that can result in more news coverage about candidates.

“Bus tours are a staple of [a] campaign season for good reason—in addition to being fun, serving as a rolling billboard and photo opportunity for the candidate or issue, they offer unparalleled immersion into a community or region,” Abbey Watson , who worked in the Obama administration and on different political campaigns, commented in an email message.

Visuals are as important on the campaign trail as a candidate’s message.

“The [bus[ format gives local voters and media significant exposure to the campaign and a great visual that stands apart from the usual rally set up,” Watson observed.

‘Easier To Plan’

“Bus tours are a great way for candidates to tour the major media markets in a swing state. Bus tours can be logistically and financially easier to plan than a tour of a state using a plane. It's easier for local candidates to 'hop on' and 'hop off' for a day or two as well,” Megan Sweeney , a former communications director of the Pennsylvania Republican Party, noted in an email interview.

Political candidates don’t always have to be on the bus though in order for a bus tour to be successful.

"There are times when the candidate doesn't even need to be on the bus for a stop to make the local news. A campaign bus rolling into a smaller market with surrogates is an easy way to reach voters who are often overlooked and gain a headline in a local newspaper,” Sweeney noted.

Challenges And Downsides

But there can be some downsides to this way of campaigning for votes.

“Bus tours are the most challenging event format for a campaign—they take all the typical requirements of producing a rally or other event and combine them with logistics of transporting the candidate, their staff and security,” according to Watson.

There are also security and other considerations to take into account when candidates go on the road by bus.

“Like with any campaign event, it's important to be prepared for counter protests. That's why it's so important to choose a spot for the campaign stop that's secure and alert local authorities as soon as possible,” Sweeney cautioned.

But bus tours are nothing new—Democratic and Republican presidential and other candidates have used the tactic during their races for the White House over the years. They include President Bill Clinton (1996), North Carolina Democratic Senator John Edwards (1996), Arizona Republican Senator John McCain (2000), President George W. Bush (2004) , Utah Republican Senator Mitt Romney (2012), President Donald Trump (2020) and President Joe Biden (2020) .

As a whistle-stop campaign train historian, I’ve documented hundreds of politicians over the past 185 years who connected with voters from the back of trains at railroad stations—and by buses. For decades, the trains were the most efficient and effective ways for presidential candidates to connect with voters in small towns and the large metropolitan areas. That is, of course, until buses and plane travel became more effective and cost-efficient for the candidates.

A Bridge Between Two Tactics

Republican presidential nominee Thomas Dewey is believed to be the first national candidate to stump for votes by bus in 1948. It was, in retrospect, a bridge between two campaign travel tactics—trains and planes.

One politician—Lee Dreyfus, a Republican gubernatorial candidate in Wisconsin, combined buses and trains when he campaigned in 1978 across the state in an old school bus that was converted to look like a campaign train.

Are More Bus Tours In Store?

“A bus tour is about as close to ‘retail politics,’ like in the early primaries, as a presidential campaign can afford to get in the three month sprint from the conventions to Election Day,” Michael Montgomery , a political scientist and lecturer in the Department of Health and Human Services at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, said in a statement.

The route of future bus tours by this year’s presidential candidates or their running mates could depend on various factors.

“I can't imagine either campaign will embark upon a truly national bus tour. I would, however, expect to see something like it from both campaigns—probably built around the VP nominees—in at least the more densely populated…battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Georgia. Nevada and Arizona are obviously also in play but I'm not sure their geography really lends itself to this particular way of campaigning,” Montgomery concluded.

Getting Closer To Business Audiences

Business leaders do not have to emulate politicians by going on bus tours. They could, however, consider other ways to get closer to their audiences and stakeholders, such as showing up in person at meetings instead of appearing via Zoom calls, greeting employees at their offices, or talking with workers on factory floors.

That kind of personal touch could help bridge the distance between those who work in the corner office and company employees.

It would be the political thing to do.

Harris and Walz make small-town stops, campaign phone calls on Pa. bus tour before DNC

Rochester, Pa. — Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz gave pep talks to campaign volunteers and a high school football team Sunday, with their bus tour in a corner of Pennsylvania serving as a modest, small-town version of the grand rally she's expected to have at the Democratic nominating convention in Chicago this week.

Vice President Harris and Walz, the governor of Minnesota, were joined by their spouses, Doug Emhoff and Gwen Walz, as they stopped off to visit volunteers at a campaign office not far from Pittsburgh before continuing on to a firehouse and a high school in another town. The tour, in a bright blue bus decorated with the candidates' names and the phrase “A new way forward,” also included pilgrimages to a convenience store and a restaurant known for its towering sandwiches.

Despite running as the sitting vice president, Harris told reporters she feels she has ground to make up in the race against former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee.

“I very much consider us the underdogs," Harris said at a stop in the township of Moon. "We have a lot of work to do to earn the vote of the American people. That’s why we’re on this bus tour today, and we’re going to be traveling this country as we’ve been and talking with folks, listening to folks, and hopefully earning their votes over the next 79 days.”

Southwestern Pennsylvania is a critical part of a key battleground state that has long commanded the attention of presidential candidates. The state voted for Trump in 2016 and for Biden in 2020. Both Harris and Trump are vying to see who can put Pennsylvania in their column on Nov. 5.

Trump, who is counting on strong turnout from his base of white, working-class voters, is not conceding the area. The counties around Pittsburgh have shifted from Democratic to Republican in recent presidential contests, delivering for Trump in both of his earlier runs.

In a demonstration of the area's competing politics, Harris' bus and motorcade twice on Sunday rolled past groups of Trump supporters with signs and banners bearing his name.

At her last stop, the vice president answered a few questions from reporters, something she’s been doing with increasing frequency as Trump has claimed she’s afraid to talk to the media and made a point of holding his own news conferences in recent weeks.

Throughout their tour Sunday, Harris and Walz shied away from policy or much politics in their remarks, instead sticking to broad-strokes messages focused on character, perseverance and the future of the country.

Harris, while speaking to a group of supporters and volunteers outside a campaign office in the borough of Rochester, spoke about strength and leadership. She appeared to make a veiled reference to Trump, who is known for his pugilistic style and projection of a strongman image, when she said the “real and true measure of a strength of a leader is based on who you lift up,” rather than who they beat down.

“Anybody who is about beating down other people is a coward,” she yelled, drawing cheers and applause. “This is what strength looks like.”

Walz seemed to assume the role of his former job coaching high school football and told the volunteers: “Let’s leave it all on the field. Let’s get this thing done.”

The vice president next stopped at a firehouse in Aliquippa, where she met firefighters, petted the station's dog and gave the crew almond pastries, before heading to a nearby high school, she and Walz met with the local football coach and addressed the team, who kneeled on the field to listen.

Walz again slipped into coach mode, reminiscing a bit about his days leading a team before introducing Harris. She praised the young athletes for their leadership: “Our nation is counting on you and your excellence. We applaud your ambition."

She also told them, “Welcome to the role model club.”

Most polls, including recent surveys from the New York Times/Siena College and Fox News, find Harris and Trump locked in a tight race statewide.

Trump held a rally Saturday in Wilkes-Barre in the northeastern part of the state, following his earlier rallies in July in Harrisburg and Butler, where he survived an assassination attempt.

The bus tour marks Harris’ eighth trip to Pennsylvania this year, and her second this month. The vice president chose to make her first joint appearance with Walz on the ticket in Philadelphia on Aug. 6.

On Sunday, Harris and Walz arrived with their spouses at Pittsburgh International Airport, where they held hands and raised their arms together in front of cheering supporters. The foursome then set off on their bus to glad-hand with voters in the Pittsburgh area.

At a stop in the township of Moon, Harris popped into a Sheetz convenience store to seek out Doritos, her go-to snack. She later stopped at a Primanti Bros. restaurant, a famed chain known for sandwiches layered with coleslaw and fries, where she met diners and posed for a few pictures. Both franchises were launched in western Pennsylvania.

Earlier in the day in Rochester, Harris, Walz and their spouses spent a few minutes sitting at tables with volunteers and making phone calls to line up support.

Harris took a cellphone from a volunteer and spoke to the person on the other end.

“I love Erie. At some point we’ll get to Erie,” Harris said.

She continued the conversation and at one point said, “79 days to go."

Walz, sitting across the table from Harris, hung up from a call, said of the caller, “He’s all in,” and gave a thumbs up.

Kristin Kanthak, associate professor of political science at the University of Pittsburgh, said Pennsylvania “is a state that traditionally has been super important, but southwestern Pennsylvania has been really kind of the battleground part of the battleground state.”

After Trump’s surprise win in the state in 2016, Biden flipped Pennsylvania in 2020 — and, in so doing, won the White House — in part by running up his vote totals in heavily Democratic Pittsburgh, the state’s second-largest city.

Trump has embraced protectionist trade policies and insists he is pro-worker. His vow to increase U.S. energy production and “drill, baby, drill” has resonated in southwestern Pennsylvania blue-collar counties like Washington, where a natural gas drilling boom has helped make Pennsylvania the nation’s No. 2 producer after Texas. Harris once wanted to ban fracking, an oil and gas extraction process, before recently disavowing her earlier position — a reversal Trump has hammered her for.

Bus tours like the one Harris embarked on in Pennsylvania have become a staple of political campaigns partly because of the free media coverage they generate. Such trips get the candidates out of their power suits and out of Washington so they can travel the country and score face time with voters in small venues like diners and mom-and-pop shops.

The low-key venues of Harris’ campaign on Sunday will be replaced with their polar opposite Monday when the Democratic National Convention opens in Chicago, offering a prime-time showcase that director Steven Spielberg is helping to choreograph.

Both Harris and Trump are holding dueling events in the critical swing state.

PITTSBURGH -- Just a day before the Democratic National Convention, Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz and their spouses, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Gwen Walz, kicked off their "On the Road to Chicago" bus tour in the key battleground state of Pennsylvania. It was the first time all four hit the trail together.

Sunday's tour launched from Pittsburgh, with multiple stops in Beaver and Allegheny counties located in western Pennsylvania. The campaign hopes to "meet voters where they are in community settings." The stops will range from canvass kick-offs to local retail stops.

The stops come right after former President Donald Trump 's Saturday rally in Wilkes-Barre, located in the northeastern region. The former president will also be stopping in York on Monday and his vice presidential pick, JD Vance, will deliver remarks in Philadelphia on the same day as well.

Harris' campaign is looking to make inroads in the heavily conservative Beaver county where she will highlight labor unions while Trump is looking to appeal to the blue collar voters in Wilkes-Barre, which is not too far from President Joe Biden's hometown of Scranton.

At his rally, Trump claimed that Harris' economic policies would be the "death of Pennsylvania," a state that has heavy ties in the energy and steel industries.

"We're going to get your energy prices down by 50% the Kamala presidency will mean death for Pennsylvania energy. Remember that it'll mean death of Pennsylvania," said Trump.

The dueling events highlight how critical the state is in reaching the coveted 270 electoral votes needed to win November's election. The state, which not only holds significance to Biden but for First Lady Dr. Jill Biden as well, was a regular stomping ground for the president. He made 9 stops this year before leaving the ticket. This will be both Harris' and Trump's 8th visit to the state this year.

Trump won Pennsylvania's 19 electoral votes in 2016, but Biden was able to reclaim the state along with two other Rust Belt states, Wisconsin and Michigan, by a narrow margin of just over 1% in 2020.

The momentum Harris has seen since Biden stepped down has injected a much-needed enthusiasm into the campaign that has helped to give the candidate a bump in swing state polling. Currently Harris is polling nearly two points ahead of Trump in Pennsylvania, according to 538's average.

The Harris-Walz campaign is betting on the heavy investments they've made in the state to keep their edge. The campaign has nearly 300 staffers across 36 offices in the Keystone State. On Saturday they announced a $370 million ad investment with a promise of twice of the investment in TV in Pennsylvania than made in 2020.

Harris-Walz to kick off 'Road to Chicago' bus tour from Pittsburgh Sunday

Vice President Kamala Harris and running mate Gov. Tim Walz will kick off a bus tour from Pittsburgh Sunday, stopping in multiple Western Pennsylvania spots.

The tour, dubbed "on the Road to Chicago," comes the day before the Democratic National Convention kicks off in Chicago, the Harris-Walz campaign told USA TODAY Wednesday.

The candidates' spouses Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Gwen Walz will join them on the tour, the first time all four are campaigning together. The group will focus on meeting voters in their communities, stopping at volunteer canvass events and local retailers.

This will be Harris' eighth visit to Pennsylvania this year. The tour is scheduled after Harris is expected to make her first policy-centered speech in Raleigh, North Carolina Friday.

Pennsylvania is a key battleground state

Pennsylvania provides 19 electoral votes (one less than it did in 2020). It was one of a handful of states that switched its vote from Donald Trump in 2016 to the Democratic Party in 2020.

In 2016, Trump won the state by less than 50,000 votes, beating Hillary Clinton with 48.6% of the vote compared to 47.9% of the vote for Clinton.

In 2020, President Joe Biden won 50% of the votes, beating Trump who won 48.8% of the vote.

Harris has already made several campaign stops in Pennsylvania, including her first appearance with running mate Walz. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro was another top contender for vice president.

When is the Democratic National Convention?

Harris' western Pennsylvania tour comes as many others in the party are headed to Chicago for the DNC.

The DNC is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 19 through Thursday Aug. 22.

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and her vice presidential pick Tim Walz embarked on a bus tour through western Pennsylvania on Sunday, one day ahead of the Democratic National Convention .

Joined by their spouses, Doug Emhoff and Gwen Walz, the Democratic running ticket took a road trip through a traditionally red area of the state, promoting unity and positivity as the foundation of their campaign.

Harris and Walz spoke with prospective voters over the phone, gave a stump speech to supporters, met with members of a local firehouse and addressed a high school football team.

The team then headed to Chicago for the first day of the DNC on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign is planning counter-programming events to draw attention away from the convention. Allies of the former president plan to hold events at the Trump hotel over four days.

At the same time, Trump and his running mate, JD Vance , will hold rallies in key swing states.

Supreme Court upholds states’ block on protections for trans students

Twenty-six states will be permitted to maintain their block on the Biden administration’s new rules intended to protect transgender students from discrimination, the Supreme Court ruled on Friday.

In an emergency order, all nine justices upheld a ruling by lower courts in Louisiana and Kentucky that allowed the states to temporarily pause the new rules as legal proceedings on the matter continue.

The new rules, which were unveiled by the Biden administration in 2021, redefined “sex discrimination” in Title IX to include “sex stereotypes, sex characteristics, pregnancy or related conditions, sexual orientation, and gender identity.”

Harris campaign books ‘largest ever’ digital ad blitz in $200m effort to reach voters on their phones

Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign is reaching out to potential voters through cellphones and streaming platforms, reserving more than $200 million for digital advertising, a memo from the campaign announced.

The Harris-Walz campaign revealed on Saturday that the investment in digital ads will take up the majority of the $370 million they have reserved for advertising – only $170 million will be geared toward television ads.

For nine weeks, ads will air on popular digital platforms like Hulu, Roku, YouTube and Spotify – mainly focused in battleground states. It does not include spending on social media.

The campaign said they believed it was the largest digital ad reservation in American politics. Streaming has become more popular than traditional television over the last few years.

Trump swerves between economic remarks and personal insults at campaign rally

Former president Donald Trump swerved from prepared remarks on the economic policies of the Biden-Harris administration and ad-hoc personal insults towards vice president Kamala Harris during his campaign speech last night in northeastern Pennsylvania.

This was his second rally in the state since the attempt on his life in Butler, Pennsylvania.

In his speech, he attacked Harris on the US economy by associating the vice president with the Biden administration’s inflation woes, as well as criticising Harris’ plans to stop price gouging as “going full communist”.

Food prices have increased by nearly 20 per cent under the Biden-Harris administration and Harris said she would enact a federal ban on price gouging in the food industry.

Trump asked why the vice president hadn’t solved inflation when she was already in office since 2021.

“Day one for Kamala was three and a half years ago. So why didn’t she do it then?” Trump said, part of a scripted attack on Democrats for inflation. Republican strategists believe economic troubles represent one of the major issues where voters could trust Trump over Harris.

He then swerved away into conspiracies and personal comments, however. “You don’t mind if I go off teleprompter for a second, do you? Joe Biden hates her,” the former president said, before describing Biden’s decision to step down in favour of Harris as the 2024 candidate as a “coup”.

Trump boasts of dominating China and Russia with Space Force at rally

At yesterday’s campaign rally in northeastern Pennsylvania former president and Republican nominee Donald Trump boasted of his administration’s achievements in “rebuilding the military”.

“We came up with a new and very important organisation – to put it mildly – first time since the air force in 80 years we have the space force,” Trump said.

“We took space where we were languishing, falling way behind China and Russia and now we’re dominating them,” the former president claimed.

He said the space force would end up becoming “one of our truly important” agencies.

“It already is,” Trump said.

Though signed into law by Trump in 2019, the initiative to create the US’s space force was developed over decades, and not a partisan programme, according to the New York Times. Formed to bring the various areas of expertise and responsibility for matters relating to space within a single military command centre, its budget is set to reach $30bn this year.

Trump calls Biden-Harris student loan forgiveness plan 'communist takeover'

Donald Trump called the Biden-Harris administration’s decision to forgive college student debt a “communist takeover” of the US.

“What they’re doing is a communist takeover of the country...They are a threat to democracy,” Trump said at the Pennsylvania rally.

He claimed he would control inflation and would “make America affordable again”

“Her radical liberal policies, of course, horrific inflation decimated the middle class and gutted the finances of millions of American families,” Trump said, attacking Harris’ economic plans.

The former president at one point during the rally handed over the microphone to pilot Daniel Campo, a former Venezuela resident whose family fled from Cuba and then Venezuela to arrive in the US in 2007.

“We are going on a path that is taking us to what Venezuela became so the only way we can avoid keep going down that path is making Trump president again,” Campo said to a crowd that started chanting “U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A”

George Santos, the former Republican congressman ousted amid a series of scandals, is reportedly set to accept a plea deal in his federal criminal case in order to avoid a trial, lawyers involved in the case and those familiar with the matter said.

The disgraced lawmaker is expected to enter a guilty plea to the judge overseeing his case, District Judge Joanna Seybert, on Monday at the federal courthouse in Central Islip, New York, sources told Talking Points Memo, CNN, The New York Times and other outlets.

“I’m looking for President Trump to show up in the last 80 days to define what he will do for our country, to fix broken borders, to lower inflation.”

Graham added that he and Nikki Haley are “giving advice on TV to president Trump”.

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz put his coaching jacket on while addressing a group of high school football players about the importance of unity and positivity on Sunday, as part of the campaign’s bus tour through Pennsylvania.

At Aliquippa High School, Vice President Kamala Harris, Second Gentleman Doug Emoff and Walz spoke with a group of high school football players about the future of the country.

The group of young athletes sat and listened as Walz reminded them of the importance of unity and functioning as a team both on and off the field.

“Politics isn’t that much different than this. It’s about something bigger than themselves, it’s about setting up a future goal and trying to reach it,” Walz said.

“It’s about doing it with dignity and hard work. It’s about doing it with humility and when you lose, you walk across the field and you shake hands with the other team and know they played hard too,” Walz continued.

Walz is often referred to as “coach” – a reference to his days of coaching high school football.

Kamala Harris’s campaign has slammed Donald Trump for planning a rally in a Michigan town with long ties to the Ku Klux Klan and white supremacists.

On Saturday, a spokesperson for the Harris campaign savaged the Republican ticket’s choice of venue arguing that Trump is making an appeal to the white nationalists who marched against Jews and other minorities in Charlottesville in 2017 – a moment which led to Trump controversially praising demonstrators and counterprotesters at a press conference.

“The racists and white supremacists who marched in Trump’s name last month in Howell have all watched him praise Hitler, defend neo-Nazis in Charlottesville, and tell far-right extremists to ‘stand back and stand by.’ Trump’s actions have encouraged them, and Michiganders can expect more of the same when he comes to town next week,” the Michigan communications director for the Harris campaign, Alyssa Bradley, told The Washington Post .

Tim Walz posts selfie ahead of bus tour

Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, shared two selfies of himself, his wife Gwen Walz, Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emoff shortly before they boarded buses to take them around Pennsylvania.

“Road trip,” Walz wrote in the caption of his post.

A straight, football-coaching National Guardsman wasn’t the LGBT+ ally that Seth Elliot Meyer expected.

But Meyer, who came out as queer in his freshman year of high school in 2000, admits he was wrong about Tim Walz.

“I just sort of naively believed that someone who was a big, masculine dude with a deep voice was never someone who’s going to be on my side,” Meyer says.

“As much as those younger students who were courageous enough to be out in those years, it was just as important to have those very kind of ‘normal,’ strong, straight, masculine allies backing us up.”

Before he was governor of Minnesota, before he was a member of Congress, and before he was a candidate for the next vice president of the United States, he was “Mr Walz,” a geography teacher at Mankato West High School, roughly 80 miles south of Minneapolis.

The Democratic National Convention gets underway on Monday August 19 in Chicago, Illinois, with some political heavyweights slated to headline the four-day gathering.

While the DNC is first and foremost a presidential nominating convention, Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz are already officially on the Democratic party’s ticket after a five-day round of online voting from delegates wrapped on August 5.

But there were still be speeches from Democratic leaders like President Joe Biden, former president Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Jason Carter, the grandson of Jimmy Carter.

Tim Walz emphasizes unity in campaign stump speech

“This campaign is a chance to bring out that joy, turn the page and look to the future,” Minnesota Governor Tim Walz told supporters on Sunday in Pennsylvania.

In a short stump speech, Walz told young people that the Harris-Walz campaign is an opportunity to see the positive side of America and come together.

“Some of us who have less hair are old enough to remember when you could go to Thanksgiving to watch a Steelers game with your relatives and not complain about politics the whole time. We shared a commitment to democracy,” Walz said.

“We don’t call each other names, we don’t do it. And we don’t use the least fortunate among us as punchlines for jokes because they are our neighbors,” he added.

Harris and Walz Venture Into Less-Friendly Terrain to Court Pennsylvania Voters

The Democratic presidential ticket went to the crucial swing state on Sunday to visit areas that are competitive and somewhat more conservative.

Before their convention this week that will signal the final sprint to November, Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, headed out on a brief bus tour on Sunday to fire up voters in perhaps the most crucial battleground state in the 2024 election.

As they toured western Pennsylvania, their play for support beyond the state’s more liberal cities was apparent at the team’s first stop, a field office in Rochester, Pa., in the largely conservative Beaver County: Ms. Harris picked up a volunteer’s cellphone to speak with a resident from Erie, a northwestern city in one of the state’s swingiest counties, which Hillary Clinton lost in 2016 but Joseph R. Biden Jr. won four years later.

“I love Erie,” Ms. Harris said. “At some point we’ll get to Erie.”

Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz were joined on the outing by their spouses, Doug Emhoff and Gwen Walz, traveling in two new campaign buses from the Pittsburgh airport, where they arrived on Air Force Two to greet a small group of supporters.

The Pittsburgh and Philadelphia areas are the two main drivers of Democratic support in Pennsylvania, a state whose 19 electoral votes could decide the presidency. Recent polling shows a neck-and-neck race there between Ms. Harris and former President Donald J. Trump, with some surveys showing Ms. Harris gaining a narrow edge recently.

Mr. Trump is also increasing his presence in Pennsylvania: On Saturday he held a rally in Wilkes-Barre and another is set in York on Monday, while Senator JD Vance of Ohio, his running mate, campaigns in Philadelphia.

Both candidates have used their trips in the state to make attacks.

Speaking to a crowd of supporters outside the Rochester campaign office on Sunday, Ms. Harris appeared to suggest that Mr. Trump was a “coward” — just a day after he had called her a “radical” and a “lunatic” in Wilkes-Barre.

“Over the last several years there’s been this kind of perversion that has taken place, I think, which is to suggest that the measure of the strength of a leader is based on who you beat down,” Ms. Harris said — though she did not name Mr. Trump. “Anybody who’s about beating down other people is a coward.”

President Biden often preferred to campaign in Philadelphia, by far the state’s largest metro area. The city is easily reached from Washington and close to his home state of Delaware, nestled in friendly territory surrounded by counties he carried in 2020 .

Outside Allegheny County, where Pittsburgh sits, western Pennsylvania is less hospitable to Democrats, and Ms. Harris’s visit there suggests she may branch out more than Mr. Biden did.

“God bless them, they need to,” Nancy Cannon, a retired teacher who showed up at the Pittsburgh airport, said of the campaign’s planned visits. She described a landscape of Trump supporters, where she knew of Democrats who were afraid to put out their own lawn signs. “Maybe they would feel more supported,” she said, if Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz showed up.

Ms. Cannon said Ms. Harris’s swift ascent to the top of the Democratic ticket had given a jolt of energy to her family and friends. “I love Joe. But I am happier to see a younger person. I feel like this is an Obama moment.”

The trip points to the Democratic hopes that Mr. Walz can help the party reach working-class voters outside the big cities. The suburbs and small towns surrounding Pittsburgh resemble areas in Minnesota where Mr. Walz has performed well in his previous races.

One campaign stop on Sunday was also a clear effort to tap into Mr. Walz’s personal history: a football practice at Aliquippa High School in a former steel town with many Black residents that has struggled economically for decades. Mr. Walz’s own experience as a high school football coach has been a touchstone of the campaign so far, with Ms. Harris occasionally referring to him as “Coach Walz.”

Mr. Walz told the team he “remembered every single call” from his team’s state football championship. He and Ms. Harris were joined at the event by Jerome Bettis, the Hall of Fame running back who won a Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mr. Bettis, nicknamed The Bus, was a surprise, if appropriately named, addition to the Harris-Walz motor coach tour, which also made short stops at a nearby firehouse, a Sheetz gas station and Primanti Bros., a beloved chain of sandwich shops founded in Pittsburgh.

“The way you win elections in Pennsylvania is literally going everywhere,” said Lt. Gov. Austin Davis of Pennsylvania, a Democrat who is from the Pittsburgh area. “Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, but all the small communities in between.”

Mr. Davis also said that Ms. Harris would find a welcome audience in the working-class region for the economic agenda she rolled out last week that focused on lowering the costs of everyday life and cutting taxes for working families.

Conor Lamb, a Democrat who once represented a congressional district outside Pittsburgh, said Mr. Biden had become well known to many Pennsylvania voters, thanks to his decades of service as a senator in neighboring Delaware, an advantage Ms. Harris does not possess.

Mr. Lamb said that the bus tour reflected the fact that Democrats had learned their lesson from Mrs. Clinton losing the state after focusing most of her campaign on the major cities.

“You can’t just do Philly and Pittsburgh and rely on social media,” Mr. Lamb said.

And he agreed that Ms. Harris’s economic plans would be popular in places like Rochester, a small town once known for its glassmaking factories that sits in his old district.

“Some of the things that she laid out in that speech — the child tax credit, extending health care subsidies — all that kind of stuff is just universal,” Mr. Lamb said. “That should do as well in Rochester as it does in the heart of the city of Pittsburgh. And I’ve felt in the past that Democrats were a little bit afraid to go on the offense in those areas.”

MOON TWP. – Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz made a brief, check that, very brief appearance in a hangar near Pittsburgh International Airport Sunday.

Why were they there? Harris and Walz, and their spouses, were kicking off a bus tour to, well, nobody would say other than a stop in Rochester, Beaver County, before flying to Chicago later in the day for the Democratic National Convention. However, sources (i.e., someone on X/Twitter) told PennLive that a crowd was gathered near the Sheetz in Rochester, so take that WaWa.
