Grand Menshikov Palace

Menshikov began to build his residence here in 1713, at about the same time as Peter began work on his own estate at Peterhof. Menshikov seemed intent on outdoing his master in terms of scale and grandeur, and commissioned architects Giovanni Mario Fontana and Gottfried Schadel, who were already building the Menshikov Palace in St. Petersburg, to design his seaside palace. After over a decade of work, which eventually bankrupted Menshikov, the palace was completed.

Facing the sea, with a two-level terrace in front of it, this charming yellow and white building consists of a concave central block with two single-storey galleries leading to prominent octagonal pavilions, one of which houses the palace chapel. On the south side of the building, two large ancillary wings, the Kitchen Wing and the Ladies' Wing, run from the pavilions perpendicular to the central block.

Menshikov had little time to enjoy his new palace before he was arrested and exiled in 1727. The estate at Oranienbaum was passed to the state, and Menshikov's palace became a naval hospital. In 1743, the estate was presented by Empress Elizabeth to her nephew, the future Peter III, who commissioned Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli, the greatest late baroque architect working in Russia, to renovate the palace. Rastrelli left the exterior of the palace almost untouched, but created sumptuous interiors that have, sadly, long since been destroyed. At this time, the western pavilion became known as the Japanese Pavilion, thanks to the collection of Japanese and Chinese ceramics it housed.

The palace was altered again in 1762 by Antonio Rinaldi, who added a granite staircase and semi-circular balcony to the northern terraces and redecorated many of the interiors. After serving as a Naval Cadet College from the end of the 18 th century, the palace was used as a residence by both Alexander I and his brother Mikhail. During the 19 th century, several famous architects, including Luigi Ruska, Carlo Rossi, and Vasiliy Satsov, reworked the interiors of the palace.

Today, while the Grand Menshikov Palace is still extremely impressive from the outside, its interiors are in a parlous state, and major renovation work still needs to be done to prevent parts of the building collapsing. For visitors, there is little to see except a collection of portraits of the various owners of Oranienbaum.

A Fisker Ocean One sports utility vehicle (SUV) charges at an EV car show in Canada in April 2024. ... [+] Just 8 weeks later, Fisker filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Photographer: Graham Hughes/Bloomberg

As the electric vehicle (EV) market gets more crowded, some manufacturers are dropping out, making you think twice before buying your own EV.

Take my recent experience with Fisker. I put down a deposit almost three years ago, excited about their direct-to-consumer model and the chance to configure my own car online. Being part of the clean-energy revolution? Absolutely! But after months of silence and follow-ups, I got a vague reply from a “Fisker Rådgiver”—which means "advisor" in Danish—saying, “We are primarily a digital company.” That’s when I knew something was off.

And I was right. Production was supposed to start in November 2022. While some cars did make it to the roads, mine didn't. By June this year, Fisker had had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to low demand, funding issues, recalls, and supply chain problems, according to Reuters.

Now, there's a Fisker Owners’ Association trying to keep the cars' cloud software alive, among other things. But owning one of these cars? It’s not easy. With only 6,400 Fisker Oceans out there, each costing up to $70,000, it’s a small, exclusive club—and not in a good way. Lawyers are advising owners to get solid insurance, and finding a shop that knows how to fix these cars is a real challenge.

And those issues are only the beginning if you read online forums on EVs. ‘MushyWaffle’ captures the perceptions of barriers to EV ownership: “All EVs are junk, unsafe (using touchscreen instead of buttons), troublesome, not environmentally friendly (batteries and tires do more damage than any saving via exhaust), [are] overpriced, and cost way more to support (chargers in homes are $1000s); [they’re] inconvenient, [have] issues with weather impacting usage, and finally the used market for them is hot garbage with outdated batteries and expense.”

So, what risks do you or your business face in joining early EV adopters and how can you manage those issues?

Spotlight on EVs’ risks & how to tackle them

Apple iPhone 16 And iPhone 16 Plus: Everything We Know So Far

Fbi issues urgent ransomware attack warning—do these 3 things now, 72 best labor day sales: shop savings from rei, article, dyson and more.

For starters, let’s clarify ‘early adoption’. EVs reportedly had their golden age between 1890 and 1930, but their short range, expense, and limited acceleration allowed the first Ford Model T to muscle them out from 1908 onward.

We’re now in EV revolution #2 where those three early barriers of EVs are largely being solved.

Getting in a tech tangle

EVs and their software are yet to be standardized. Proprietary software is how manufacturers distinguish their products in a competitive market. Innovation is evolving rapidly, and traditional automakers tend to have legacy software systems that are yet to play nicely with new EV tech.

Despite those downsides, North American and European automakers are considering a Combined Charging System (CCS) standard; battery-swapping tech is underway, and industry-wide safety standards for EV batteries and electrical systems are being fine-tuned and rolled out.

We’re not there yet with standardization, so this remains a risk.

The one that won’t go away: Range anxiety

The longest range EVs can do between 500 and 600 miles. They include the Lucid Air Grand Touring, BMX iX xDrive50 and the Polestar 2 Single Motor Long Range. Figures are fuzzy, though, depending on whether estimates are based on the US EPA or predominantly European WLTP scales.

Dealing with range anxiety is about education – consider carefully planning your trips and routes using apps that show in real time what recharging options are available and where. Understand that extreme heat and cold temperatures can minimize EV range . Expect your EV to give you multiple warnings and alerts as its battery runs low, and to switch to low-power mode to limit acceleration and power.

If these are still problems for you, consider transitioning to a plug-in hybrid EV instead. Alternatively, stay updated on newer models’ increasing EV ranges and what factors reduce those ranges and by how much. Bringing ‘speed’ into range, the fastest production EV is the Rimac Nevera , clocking a stellar 256 mph.

EVs are safe

According to the Environmental Protection Agency and other sources, EVs are as safe as, or even safer, than traditional gas-fueled cars:

  • Less chance of rolling over due to the battery lowering the center of gravity in an EV
  • Most EVs achieve top safety ratings in crash tests, and generally come with extra safety features
  • Lower risk of fires compared to gas-powered vehicles, although EV fires are challenging to extinguish (25 fires per 100,000 EV vehicles compared to 1,530 for traditional vehicles), and
  • EV drivers’ and passengers’ insurance injury claim rates are 40% of those in other car types. This may be due to EVs’ improved crumple zone resulting from the lack of a heavy engine.

The downsides include larger and heavier EVs posing more risks to occupants in collisions compared to lighter vehicles. Also, the whisper-quiet operation of EVs means pedestrians may not hear the vehicles approach, putting them at a greater risk of an injury or worse.

The price point & risk protection

While EVs were, on average, 17% more expensive than other vehicle types at the start of this year, the gap is narrowing . If you expand your view to used EVs, almost six in 10 of them cost less than $30,000. Bigger doesn’t have to be better – look into micro or mini EVs, or even ready-to-assemble ones . Government sweeteners, such as tax credits can also help make the price of new or used EVs more affordable.

Your insurance premium for an electric vehicle will likely be about 20% higher than for a traditional vehicle. However, specific features can affect the cost, such as the model’s safety ratings, the availability of spare parts and repair costs. Keep in mind that EV values fluctuate more than traditional vehicles due to rapid technological advancements. This can make it challenging to determine a precise replacement cost. And if you’re going for a used model, be aware batteries have limited lifespans. They’re usually guaranteed for eight years or between 160K and 260K miles, but experts say you could get 20 years out of them before replacement.

Contemporary EVs are more ‘baked in’ to modern society than their precursors about a century ago. The planet’s at stake now. EVs are an integral part of the clean energy revolution, backed by international and national policies, incentives, pledges, and a common purpose.

In the US, the Inflation Reduction Act introduced a clean vehicle tax credit, the $5 billion National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure project, and $2 billion to help automotive plants convert to electric. In the EU, new CO2 standards are in force to boost EV adoption, while China’s global leadership in EV production has been supported by its government incentives and industrial policies

The impetus is there—as are the risks. But we’re yet to reach the EV tipping point or EV fatigue (sales have been slowing, but they’re still growing). It's still early days if you want to take a punt on this transformational technology.
