EPIC DOORS-OFF ADVENTURE will take you to Kauai’s most lush and scenic destination on the island!

Discover a birds-eye view of Bali Hai, also known as Makana Mountain, which starts at the beginning of the Na Pali Coast on the north shore of Kauai. Soar over Manawaiopuna Falls, one of the Garden Isle’s most famous waterfalls. Best known for the opening of the 1993 blockbuster film Jurassic Park. Watch from above as the water rushes over a 380-foot tall cliff surrounded by walls of deep green lush flora. Located within Hanapēpē Valley on the island’s west side, it is a site few can say they have seen while on Kauai.

Continue to Hanalei Bay, which covers nearly two miles of beach and is backed by 4000-foot-tall emerald mountains: Hihimanu is on the east, Namolokama is in the middle with its square top, and the triangular-shaped Mamalahoa is to the west. Often cloaked with a mist of clouds, the Mt.Waialeale ridge is home to dozens of cascading waterfalls.

Waialeale, meaning “rippling water or overflowing,” receives over 400 inches of rain annually and is known to be one of the wettest spots on earth. Enchanting waterfalls and lush green walls of fauna surround you—Waialeale Crater, aka Blue Hole & The Weeping Wall. You will see it all from above and find yourself lost in the beauty and mystery of Kauai’s enchanting lure.

Other sights like Wailua Falls and Waimea Canyon are famous aerial sights on the Doors-Off Adventure Tour.

Monika B – November 8, 2022

The helicopter ride was worth every bit! We were fortunate to have beautiful weather and breathtaking scenery and views! The crew was so kind, and of the pilot, Wayne was probably the best guide and narrator one could ask for! Do it!!

Marcus Colby – August 18, 2022

Fantastic experience!! The pilot and ground crew were super friendly and made us feel so comfortable. Open door helicopter was super cool. The price was reasonable compared to other companies. Definitely worth it. Felt very safe. My wife can get motion sickness but did not with this experience. The helicopter was very stable. Tanya with Kaua.com was so knowledgeable about Kauai and booked all our tours on Kauai. I will definitely work with Kauai.com again.

  • Chevron down Weight Restrictions

Our weight limit in place for an individual is 250 lbs and 400 lbs per pair. Weight limits include all clothing, shoes, and carry-on items. The reason why our weight limit is different for pairs is to ensure that they can be on the same flight.

All passengers weighing over 250 lbs and pairs weighing over a combined 400 lbs are required to purchase an additional adjacent seat at checkout.

The weight and balance of a helicopter are crucial to its ability to fly, so we appreciate your understanding of strictly enforcing this policy. In order to comply with FAA regulations, we will discretely weigh every passenger upon checking in.

For parties of 3-4 passengers, we require one of the passengers to be 150 lbs or less and no taller than 5’10” to accommodate the front middle seat. This policy is to ensure that your party can fly together on the same helicopter. This aircraft, the MD500, has a front middle seat with a weight limitation of 150 lbs and a height restriction of 5’10”.

  • Chevron down FAQs

map of Kauai helicopter tour flight paths

  • We strongly believe that 60 minutes should be the minimum flight time for a helicopter tour of Kauai. Our 60-65 minute tour offers superior viewing, more opportunity for photography and video, and better value than those flown for only 45-50 minutes. It may not seem like much time on the ground but when you’re in the air, every minute counts. The extra 5, 10, or 15 minutes that we spend over Kauai’s verdant valleys, water-carved canyons, and the sculpted Na Pali Coast allow our pilots to go slower, fly lower, and spend more time at these tour highlights. It takes a minimum of 1 minute to make a full turn (safely and slowly) in a helicopter, which our pilots often do while hovering over scenic areas, to allow passengers on both sides of the helicopter opportunities for unobstructed viewing and to capture great photos/videos. Plus when broken down to cost-per-minute the value of our 60 minute tour is often more affordable than those only flown for 45-50 minutes.

What should I wear?

  • For the Door-Off experience, you MUST wear shoes that are laced or strapped on. We highly recommend bringing a light jacket, preferably something waterproof for the cool and potentially misty breeze. For all tours, we recommend wearing a long sleeve shirt, pants, and comfortable shoes. For everyone’s safety, we do not allow any hats, beanies, GoPro head mounts, scarfs, turbans, or other headgear for any of our tours. These items pose a risk to everyone’s safety when boarding, flying, and deboarding.

Can I bring my children?

  • For our Doors-Off tour, your child must be at least 10 years of age and must be accompanied by an adult. If you would like to fly on our doors-off tour and your child is not old enough yet, we recommend asking your hotel if they offer any babysitting or daycare services.

Can I make a seat request?

  • Because safety is our first priority, we must arrange seating to optimize the weight and balance of the aircraft. However, if you do have a seat preference you have the opportunity to let the staff know upon booking. We will try our best to honor those requests but please keep in mind,  we cannot guarantee any seat requests.

What You Can Bring:

  • Phone or camera (with wrist or neck strap)
  • Windbreaker or jacket
  • Secure shoes

What You CANNOT Bring:

  • Hats, beanies, or any similar headwear
  • Bags, backpacks, or purses
  • Any loose items
  • Selfie stick or GoPro stick longer than 12 inches
  • Magnetic Gimbals (allowed with an additional strap to secure)
  • Flip flops/slip on footwear

  • Chevron down Weather and Cancellations

Weather Policy: With safety being our number one priority, we will only fly if current conditions allow for a safe and smooth flight. On top of that, if we feel the weather is such that it is not worth your time and money for a tour, we will not fly. Keep in mind that weather patterns vary from hour to hour on Kauai so we are constantly monitoring between and during tours. Each tour is unique and the exact path flown will vary depending on the weather. However, we don’t want a little rain to frighten you. Keep in mind that the fantastic waterfalls and rainbows for which Kauai is famous will become more abundant soon after rain.

Cancellation Policy: You may cancel your flight with no obligations by notifying us at least 48 hours before your tour is scheduled to depart. “No-shows” and reservations canceled within the 48-hour period before the scheduled flight time are subject to full charges.

Short answer is “yes”. However, rest assured, prior to every flight our pilots and ground crew review the weather to make sure it is not only safe, but also conducive to a quality tour for you. We understand that this is a big expenditure, and we want to make sure you get your money’s worth. We will cancel your tour and make sure you get a full refund if there is poor visibility, or if the pilot determines the winds are unsafe.

We give a 100% refund for cancellations made 48 hours before the tour date. If there is inclement weather or unscheduled maintenance, we will either reschedule your tour or issue a 100% refund. Keep in mind that if the tour is booked with a third party, their cancellation and refund policy may differ from ours.

All guests must provide their own transportation. We recommend Taxi, Uber, or Lyft. We ask guests to allow an extra 15 minutes of travel time due to unforeseen traffic, to arrive early or on time for their check in.

The doors-off helicopter tour is extremely windy. We recommend comfortable athletic wear, no loose shirts, or dresses, or skirts. Closed-toe shoes or sandals with a heel strap. Hair should be secured in a bun or tightly braided, no loose ponytails or braids. Temperatures are 10-15 degrees cooler and we recommend a windbreaker or a jacket to protect against the wind chill.

All of the tour times we offer are great times to view the island. Time is personal preference whether you like to be an early bird and do activities first thing in the morning, or take your time and do a later tour midday or afternoon.

You may reschedule or cancel your tour for a full refund if done 48 hours prior to the tour date and time. It should be noted that it does rain almost every day in Hawaii. Most of the time it is in very small areas at a time, which does not affect our tours. So we do not recommend cancelling or rescheduling based on a forecast of rain.

Front Seat upgrades are the two seats in the front with the pilot. Selecting these seats guarantees the seating assignment if the two passengers’ body weights combined do not exceed the 345 pounds weight limit. The front seats are sold only as a pair together, whether it is for one or two people. The open seating is any seat in the helicopter. Open class seating is assigned by body weights. For solo passengers, we try our best to accommodate a seat next to the open door. For couples, we seat you two together in the same row. For a party of three, we either seat two passengers in the front and the third passenger in the rear seat, or vice versa depending on the weights. For a party of four passengers, we will seat accordingly by each body weight, typically the two body weights that are the lightest combined at, or under, 345 pounds will be seated in the front. For any seating, you may add a request upon booking. We do not guarantee seating nor assign seating until the day of the tour. Premium Plus seatings are for any guests that weigh 240lbs/109kg or more. An additional seat is blocked and reserved to ensure the combined passenger weight does not exceed the aircraft limitation of 745lbs/339kg.

Because this is a doors-off helicopter tour operation we must take extra steps — in accordance with FAA regulations — to make sure nothing flies out of the helicopter in flight. A phone flying out the door could hurt someone on the ground, or even damage the helicopter if it hits the spinning rotors. Requiring a tether for your phone allows you to enjoy the tour without having to worry about it slipping out of your hands and being lost forever. If you do not have a phone tether, one will be available for your use.

The minimum age requirement is 10 years old. A responsible adult must be seated next to any child. No lap children are allowed, and each person is required to wear a seat belt.

808-651-0619 or use our Contact Form

Weight Restrictions: Front Seats are sold as a pair only, with a maximum combined weight limit of 340lbs/154kg. Guests weighing more than 240lbs./109kg and parties of two (2) with a combined weight of more than 400lbs./182kg, must reserve (1) one additional seat at the regular price. Private Tour 4 guest maximum weight limit is 745lbs/338kg.

Age Restrictions: Minimum age 10 years.

By far the best part of this trip. I'm a wild guy into action sports and this ride thrilled the hell out of me. amazing views. amazing staff. Having the DOORS OFF is sooooo much more fun and intimate than a regular helicopter. Our Pilot ADAM was fun, friendly, and an excellent tour guide as well telling us about the island as we flew not only over it - but THROUGH it - hovering above waterfalls just inside giant volcanic towering wells. BUY THIS TRIP - DONT HESITATE !!!

One of the best experiences in my whole life! Thrilling, exciting, breathtaking views and the crew + Steve our pilot/guide was so amazing!!

This flight is a must if you are travelling Kauai, you get to see the entire island in all its raw beauty. Our Pilot Nick was full of information and had great insights into the island, as a bonus he had a fantastic playlist to match the scenes we were passing. We were lucky enough to even spot Whales on our flight which made this a perfect day!

During a helicopter tour of Kauai, you’ll have the opportunity to witness numerous waterfalls , hidden beaches and small towns with a bird’s eye view. We saw so many waterfalls during our tour that I honestly lost count!

Without a doubt, the two main highlights of a doors off experience are gliding over Waimea Canyon and the breathtaking Na Pali Coast .

Without reflective doors blocking your view, you’ll have the chance to witness these insane landscapes completely unobstructed, while getting the best possible photos!

This is absolutely one of the best things to do in Kauai and is a bucket list adventure that you really should consider if it’s in your budget.

In this post, I’m sharing all the essential information you need about a doors off helicopter tour in Kauai so you can book with confidence, including info on the best tour companies, costs involved, what to expect, recommended photography gear, what to bring (and what not to bring), and so much more.

Let’s dive in!

The #1 Best Kauai Doors Off Helicopter Tour

If you’re looking for the best overall tour for the best price, you can’t go wrong with Airborne Aviation tours. They have a history of offering rescue services to the Kauai Fire Department and their aircrafts don’t feature middle seats, so every passenger gets a great view! BOOK HERE

Why Book a Doors Off Helicopter Tour in Kauai?

Couple standing outside a yellow helicopter in Kauai

You came all the way to Kauai, so I’m assuming you want to see the most beautiful part of it, right?

Well that would be the Na Pali coast, and let me give you a little spoiler…it’s not the easiest place on Kauai to reach!

The Na Pali coast is the most remote part of Kauai and it’s tough to explore on foot and even more impossible to explore in the car.

There are parts that you can’t access without doing a multi-day hike or camping overnight—and even then you won’t get the same perspective of the coastline when you’re standing on it.

With a doors-off helicopter tour of Kauai, however, you get to experience the stunning Na Pali coast in its full glory.

Sure, you could take a flight, boat tour, or doors-on helicopter, but you won’t quite get the same unobstructed views like you’ll get on a doors-off tour.

Plus, in addition to viewing the stunning Na Pali coast, a helicopter tour will fly you over the center of the island, which is inhabitable due to Kauai’s geology. The only way to see it is by air!

Which is Better: Doors Off vs Doors On Helicopter Tours in Kauai

pilot in the cockpit of a doors off helicopter tour in Kauai

Simply put, a doors off vs doors on helicopter tour in Kauai are two very different experiences. While I’ve only taken a doors off helicopter tour in Kauai, I’ve been on many doors-on helicopter tours around the world, so I can attest to how different the experience is.

The biggest difference is the visibility . With a doors-off tour, you’re able to see much more of Kauai’s jaw-dropping landscapes without unobstructed views and annoying reflections if you’re trying to capture the moment.

If you’re a photographer like me or just want the clearest view of the epic Na Pali coastline, then trust me, you’re going to want to book a doors-off tour.

The second biggest difference is that a doors-off helicopter ride is much more of an adventure than a doors-on tour. If you want a bit of an adrenaline rush , you’ll definitely get it with a doors-off tour.

A doors-on tour feels more like taking a ride on a small plane, while a doors-off tour is a total thrill, leaving you exposed to the elements of wind and even potentially a little rain. It’s all part of the fun!

Doors-off tours are a bit louder because there is more air flowing through the aircraft, however the captain will provide noise cancelling headphones that really help with this.

With a doors-off tour you definitely have to think more carefully about what to bring with you (and more importantly, what not to bring), but we’ll get in that in more detail below.

The last difference is the price . The doors-off tours are typically more expensive. If taking a doors-off tour is not within your budget, I still highly recommend taking any helicopter flight over Kauai!

Still think you’d rather go with doors-on? Here’s one of the best helicopter tours on Kauai for a doors-on experience .

If a helicopter tour isn’t for you, you can also explore the Na Pali coast by boat .

Or book a flight on a small aircraft here .

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Doors-Off Helicopter Tour

Aerial view down the Na Pali coast from inside a Kauai doors off helicopter tour

I did a TON of research before choosing which company to go with for our doors-off helicopter tour of Kauai, so you can check out my top suggestions in the next section.

However, it’s always important to do your own research so here are a few things you should consider before booking.

  • The Reviews : I can’t stress enough to go with a company that has solid reviews. Helicopters can be dangerous and you want to be able to trust that the company is making the right call on the day of your flight based on the weather and potential safety threats. Kauai can have super dicey weather! With that said, all the companies I’ve included here have great reviews so you can rest assured you’re in good hands.
  • How Many Other People Will Be On the Tour? Depending on the tour company, you may be paired with other people from a group. If that’s an issue for you, make sure to double check with the company before booking.
  • Time of Day: If photography is your main goal, this is important so you get the best light. I go into this in more detail later in the post, but I would suggest shooting for a flight that’s later in the day. Morning is often recommended because the weather is typically calmer, but the light is better in the afternoon.
  • Weight Limits : Every aircraft has specific weight limits, so if you or something you’re traveling with is on the heavier side, there’s a chance you might have to pay for an extra seat. It’s always best to check this ahead of time!

What are the Best Kauai Doors Off Helicopter Tours?

Hidden beach in Kauai view from above

While there are many helicopter companies in Kauai, there are only a handful that offer a doors-off experience. Below I’m breaking down what makes each one worthwhile.

Airborne Aviation (Best Overall)

Airborne Aviation has a history providing rescue services for the Kauai Fire Department, so you know you’re in good hands here. Their doors-off flights carry four total passengers and feature no middle back seats, giving all passengers the best views possible.

These are shared tours though, so if you want something more private you need to select all 4 passengers at checkout.

This is my pick for best tour overall because it checks all the boxes of great reviews, safety and ideal seating configurations. Plus, they offer one of the most affordable doors-off helicopter tours in Kauai, so you’re getting great value when you go with Airborne Aviation.

If you’re ok with a slightly shorter flight time (50 minutes), this is a great option for you. Flights start at $325 per person.

From the reviews: “The ground crew was efficient, safety minded, informative, and friendly. The aircraft configuration is perfect for touring the island and getting incredible photos and videos as everyone has a front row seat! Kate, our pilot and tour guide is exceptional. She gave her passengers a sense of comfort with her impeccable piloting skills. She also got us up close and tight for great photos. I’m a pilot as well so i can comfortably recommend kate, and the whole crew as your “go to” aerial guide service for Kauai! Great job team! A+”

Mauna Loa Helicopters (Best for Photographers)

For photographers, this might be the best doors off helicopter tour Kauai has to offer. We went with Mauna Loa simply because they offer a unique Photography Flight which caters specifically to photographers. I also loved that every tour is private, so you don’t have to share with other passengers.

Mauna Loa started as a flight school, so all the pilots are very well trained and they provide interesting guided information as you ride as well.

With that said, the photography flight is definitely one of the most expensive doors-off helicopter tours starting at $399 per person, but there are cheaper options if you don’t need to do the photography tour.

From the reviews: “THE BEST EXPERIENCE!!! 5 stars across the board for Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours! We did the Door Off, Photography tour and had some input on what photos we wanted for the tour! And it was amazing!!! I would do it all again!”

Ali’i Air Tours & Charters (Best Private Tours)

This company doesn’t have as many reviews on TripAdvisor as the others, but it stills gets great reviews overall and is another option to consider when booking a doors-off helicopter tour.

They only operate private charters (with minimum two passengers) and don’t have middle seats on their flights, which means everyone gets a window seat!

Ali’i Air doors-off tours start at $399 per person.

From the reviews: “An unforgettable amazing experience! My husband, daughter and I loved every second of the whole trip! The flight was absolutely stunning from start to finish. It really is the best way to see the true beauty of Kauai. Everyone was friendly and our pilot was so knowledgeable. We’d do it again in a heart beat and throughly recommend it to everyone!!”

Jack Harter (Best for Longer Flights)

Jack Harter was the first company to start offering doors-off flights and have been operating on the island since 1962. As one of the OG companies, they’re definitely a trusted name in the Kauai helicopter space.

This is one of the longer tours at 60-65 minutes per flight, and prices start at $359 per person. They also have even longer tour options if you’re looking for something closer to 90 minutes!

“This was one of the highlights of our Hawaii trip. The flight was amazing, and our pilot showed excellent skill navigating the peaks and valleys and Napali Coast, including flying right into some of the “cathedrals” — absolutely beautiful and breathtaking. It will be chilly, so bring cold, close-fitting clothes, but the chill was worth it! The staff at headquarters was extremely helpful in getting us all set up, and even arranged to pick us up at the airport when we arrived. I highly recommend this tour!”

Air Kauai (Best for Larger Groups)

Air Kauai is one of the top-rated helicopter companies that offers both doors-off and doors-on flights. They also offer one of the most affordable tour options on the island.

If you’re traveling with a larger group this may be the best option for you as they can fit up to six passengers on board.

The flight time is a bit shorter (45-50 minutes), but prices start at a very reasonable $345 per person. Important note: they only allow cell phone cameras on board (DSLR cameras must stay home).

“This experience was really once in a lifetime! Getting to see the Napali coastline and the Waimea canyon was unlike anything else. Adam was an excellent pilot/tour guide/MC/videographer. I highly recommend a “doors off” ride. With no windows in the way I was quite literally on the edge of my seat for the entire flight. Some of the views will surely be in my dreams for many years to come.”

Kauai Doors Off Helicopter Tours Tips

Michelle Halpern with headset on getting ready to take flight on a doors-off helicopter tour

Here are a few pro tips you need to know in order to have the most successful experience on a Kauai doors-off helicopter excursion.

Book at the Beginning of Your Trip

While your inclination might be to end your Kauai trip with a bang and book this for one of your last couple days, here’s why you shouldn’t do that.

These tours often get rescheduled due to weather , so leaving it for the last day could mean missing your tour altogether. It sucks when they cancel (this happened to us!), but it’s only for your safety and better visibility, so it’s really better this way.

Another reason why this is a great activity to do early on in your trip is because it will give you the lay of the land and help you truly understand where everything is located around Kauai.

Stay Nearby on the Days of Your Helicopter Tour

All Kauai doors off helicopter tours depart from the Lihue Airport, and as I mentioned, they can often get delayed or rescheduled due to weather.

To avoid wasting a ton of time driving back and forth to the airport, you may want to consider basing yourself closer to Lihue on the days surrounding your helicopter tour.

Anywhere between Kapa’a and Poipu is pretty manageable driving-wise, but I wouldn’t recommend staying further away than that.

Wear the Right Clothes

While it doesn’t matter as much in an enclosed helicopter, it’s really important to dress appropriately for the doors-off experience —both for your safety and to ensure you can enjoy the ride.

It can get quite windy and chilly without the doors on, so you’ll want to make sure you wear form-fitting clothes that won’t flop around and have everything super secured.

Also, wear something warmer that covers your legs and arms like leggings, sneakers, and a zip up jacket. Don’t wear a hoodie like I did which will just flop around chaotically the whole time—learn from my mistakes!

Tie Your Hair Back

In addition to my hoodie issues, my long hair also posed a bit of a problem during the flight as the bun I put it up in immediately started loosening and flopping around once we gained altitude.

I would recommend a braid if you have long hair like me, or do something to secure it really well.

Avoid Motion Sickness

If you’re prone to motion sickness, I highly recommend taking some Dramamine beforehand. You’ll also want to limit how much you’re taking photos with your phone and camera.

I say this because I experienced some pretty extreme motion sickness towards the end of the flight and I think it was mostly due to the fact that I was viewing the scenery through my camera’s viewfinder half the time!

Keep your eyes on the horizon and you’ll fare much better than me.

What to Expect on the Day of Your Kauai Doors-Off Helicopter Tour

Pilot getting ready for takeoff at the Lihue Airport

On the day of your tour, you’ll need to arrive about 30 minutes prior to your flight time (this might vary depending on the company you choose).

Keep in mind there are weight limits , so if you weigh over 250-275 pounds (this also varies by company), you may have to pay an additional fee. Some companies include anything you might be bringing on the flight as part of your total weight.

All the flights leave from the Lihue Airport , so this is where you’ll check in and wait for your flight to depart.

We had our tour cancel due to bad weather on our first attempt, and we were pretty much sitting there and waiting up to the minute of departure before they made the call. This is pretty common!

On the day of our rescheduled tour, the weather was looking much better and we were cleared for take-off.

Once we hopped on board and got secured in our seats, Mauna Loa gave us specific lanyards to secure our devices along with noise-cancelling headphones to reduce noise and allow us to communicate with the pilot.

As we took off and ascended into the air, the epic views were instantaneous. The biggest surprise to me was that the doors-off aspect was not actually as scary as I was anticipating from a fear of heights perspective.

I was more terrified of the wind and dropping something out the window! This is why everything you have is super secured. Either way, it’s all part of the excitement.

First aerial views over Lihue, Kauai during a helicopter tour

The first part of the ride is typically where you’ll head out over the interior of the island towards Waimea Canyon , spotting sone of the most lush green terrain with countless waterfalls along the way.

We also saw multiple rainbows right at the beginning of the flight, which was super special, but not uncommon given Kauai’s weather conditions.

This part of the tour makes you truly feel like you’re in a scene from Jurassic Park —in fact, you’ll likely fly over Manawaiopuna Falls , which became famous for being featured in the movie.

Finally after making your way through Waimea Canyon (also known as the “grand canyon” of Hawaii), you’ll hit the Na Pali coastline , which is the absolute highlight of the journey. It really is one of the prettiest and most epic views in the entire world in my opinion.

View from inside doors off helicopter tour in Kauai heading into Waimea Canyon

Along the Na Pali coast, you’ll take in the dramatic scenery, featuring jagged cliffs, pristine hidden beaches, and even sea caves. The open doors really make it so easy to take it all in with the best possible views.

After spending some time on the Na Pali coast, we then flew over towards Kauai’s North Shore and then continued clockwise around the island back to Lihue.

Photography Tips for Your Kauai Doors Off Helicopter Tour

Na Pali coast aerial view from a helicopter

If epic photos are your goal during your doors off helicopter Kauai tour, then here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Set your camera to Aperture Priority so you don’t have to fiddle with your settings on the fly
  • Utilize a high shutter speed to reduce blur from the helicopter’s motion
  • Take a mid-day or afternoon flight for the best light on the Na Pali Coast
  • Make sure your camera is super secure and leave any lens caps or accessories behind before you take off
  • Unfortunately you won’t be able to switch lenses mid flight, so choose wisely the style of photos you want. The photos in this post were taken with my Sony A7R4 on a 24-70mm lens . I would have loved to get some shots on a wider lens as well, but with a wide lens you run the risk of capturing some of the propeller blades or aircraft in the shot.

Kauai Doors Off Helicopter Tours FAQ

Is the helicopter tour worth it.

I think the reviews speak for themselves. Tons of visitors to Kauai say this is the #1 top thing to do on the island, and I would have to agree!

What happens if my trip gets cancelled due to bad weather?

Know that this is super common as Kauai weather is quite finicky! If weather prevents your flight from taking off, the tour will get rescheduled. Make sure to book your tour towards the beginning of your trip to leave room for schedule changes.

What can you bring with you on a doors off helicopter tour of Kauai?

Snug fitting clothing that won’t flop around or fall off. Most companies will allow you to bring some type of device like an iPhone or camera to take photos with as long as it’s well secured.

What shouldn’t you bring on a doors off helicopter tour of Kauai?

Any loose items like hats, sunglasses, lens caps, etc.

What is the best time of day to book a helicopter tour?

This is undoubtedly one of the biggest questions people have before booking a helicopter ride in Kauai, and it’s one I researched extensively before booking our trip.

The lighting on the Na Pali coast is tricky, so depending on how much you care about the photos you get, there are a few things to consider.

Many sources online will suggest booking a morning tour because of better weather conditions and fewer chances of cancellations. However, the Na Pali coast is on the west side of the island and so it’s mostly shaded in the morning.

As the sun moves overhead and gets closer to setting in the west, the Na Pali coast begins to really sparkle with the best light.

Verdict: If you don’t care about the photos or lighting, book in the morning to reduce your chances of rescheduling. If you want the best photos, book from mid-day to afternoon to get better light on the Na Pali coast!

What’s the best seat to take when on a Kauai helicopter tour?

The helicopter tours of Kauai circle the island clockwise, so a seat on the right will give you the best views of the coastline. It’s best to avoid the middle seat, but several companies don’t fill the middle seats anyway to allow for all passengers to have great views.

What will you see on a doors off helicopter Kauai tour?

Some of the top highlights of a Kauai doors off helicopter tour include Manawaiopuna Falls located in Hanapepe Valley (aka Jurassic Park Falls), Waimea Canyon and of course the Na Pali coast.

Great time! Awesome service.

Great staff and office facility. Pilot was incredible and was a huge part of the trips fun.

I have parasiled off a volcano and skydived in Arizona but this chopper ride was 10 times better than those. It was a thorough view of the Island and the chopper got so close to all the mountain tops and valleys that it felt like I could touch them. Also, I tend to get sick on a Merry-Go-Round but I did not get nauseated at all on this ride.

Tried to communicate through online chat with Sam. Very helpful! Luckily I could book the helicopter tour on the same date. The pilot was AMAZING!!!! Steve, you are the best!!!!!!

Absolutely fabulous; awesome experience

  • 60 Minute Complete Island Circle Tour
  • Four-passenger Hughes 500 Aircraft flown with NO DOORS
  • Wear long pants and a jacket as the air is chilly at altitude
  • See Jurassic Falls, Waimea Canyon, and Na Pali Coast

Description

The most respected name in helicopter tourism over the years, Jack Harter created the helicopter tourism industry on Kauai way back in 1962. Jack invites you to escape the ordinary; to leave the byways of man and immerse yourself in the wilderness grandeur of the Garden Isle. His company offers tours in two different models of aircraft, both feature two-way communication with the pilot.

The Jack Harter Doors Off Tour is flown in the four passenger Hughes 500 for an exhilarating air tourism experience. Imagine yourself zooming along the spires of the Na Pali Coast with the wind blowing in your hair and looking straight down to the ocean below! This doors off helicopter is not for everyone, but if you are adventurous or are a photographer concerned about the window causing reflections in your photos, this might be the best tour for you.

The Jack Harter Doors Off Helicopter tour follows a circle island route clockwise around the island and features Jurassic Falls, Waimea Canyon, the Na Pali Coast, Hanalei Valley, Waialeale Crater, and Wailua Falls. Exact tour routes and sites seen on each tour can vary based upon weather conditions, but wherever you fly you will surely be stunned by the island's beauty and thrilled with the doors off experience.

Jack Harter Doors Off Helicopter Rate (JHH3)

$324.00 per Passenger, $35.00 per Fuel Surcharge   (Hawaii sales tax included)

Directions: Check in at Jack Harter's location about halfway between the Lihue Airport and downtown Lihue / Walmart area. Park at their office and their shuttle takes you to the heliport and returns you after your flight.

GPS Address: 4231 Ahukini Rd., Lihue, HI 96766 Click to view map

Schedule: 7 days a week

Time: Flight throughout the day. Checkin 45 minutes prior to your flight time.

Duration: Flight time is approximately 1 hour

Reservations: Required well in advance of your vacation. Jack Harter will charge your credit card for your seats at the time your reservation is confirmed.

Minimum Notice for Cancellation / Changes: 48 hours prior to the start of the tour. If the pilot feels a quality tour cannot be conducted due to weather conditions, you will be contacted to reschedule for another day. If you can't reschedule, there is no charge for a tour cancelled by the pilot's decision to not fly.

Equipment: Hughes 500 - This helicopter is equipped with a quick release safety harness that is required by the FAA for all doors off flights.

Restrictions: Passengers weighing over 250 pounds or couples whose combined weight exceeds 400 pounds must purchase an extra seat. No loose objects are permitted in the helicopter. Cameras must have a strong wrist or neck strap. Minimum age is 10. Guests must be physically able to climb up into the helicopter as it is several steps off the ground.

What to Wear: Long pants and jackets are recommended since this helicopter is not climate controlled.

Important Note: Jack Harter only flies with a completely full helicopter. If they do not sell all the seats on your tour, they will move you to a different flight time. If you decide to fly with Jack Harter we suggest that you reserve the tour for the first full day in Kauai ... if your flight time or date needs to be changed you'll have time to reschedule it for later in your vacation.

Kevin at Falls

It never ceases to amaze me that people spend thousands of dollars to come to Hawaii, but think it is too expensive to spend another $350 to REALLY see the islands from a helicopter. There is so much beauty that you cannot see any other way. Do yourself a favor and SPLURGE! You will thank me. I have flown with many helicopter companies and done flights over all the islands of Hawaii (except Niihau and Oahu). I don't think anyone who works in this industry would question the fact that Kauai is the most beautiful of the Hawaiian islands to fly over ... and is probably the most beautiful island in the world.

The doors off tours with Jack Harter are a wind-blown experience, and the temperature varies throughout the tour depending on your current altitude. No mood music on doors off tours ... you do wear headphones to listen to the pilot's narration and there is an intercom system so you can ask the pilot questions. This intercom doesn't work well in the back seat though ... it is windier back there. Flying with the doors off is certainly thrilling ... but it isn't for everyone.

Best time of day to fly? I think mid-morning provides the best lighting and least cloud cover. Kauai gets LOTS of rain ... the summit of Mt. Waiale'ale is one of the WETTEST places on the face of the earth. That's why this island is so beautifully carved and has so many waterfalls. Days that there are NO clouds are very rare. Typically the helicopters are able to fly back into the valleys while remaining safely below the cloud layer.

A word about body weights ... almost all helicopter companies in Hawaii have a 250 pound weight limit per seat. For larger passengers who exceed the weight limit it is necessary for the helicopter companies to leave a seat vacant so that there is adequate room for the larger passenger (and adjacent passengers). Some companies charge 50% extra for this "comfort seat" and others charge a full rate for the extra seat (which doubles the cost of the fare for a passenger over 250 pounds). Jack Harter charges 100% of the normal rate for this extra seat. They also charge extra in cases where the combined weight of 2 passengers exceeds 400 pounds. What about kids? The cost of a seat is the same whether the passenger is an adult or a child. "Doors off" tours have a minimum age of 10.

Kauai's Most Exciting “Doors Off” Helicopter Tour!

If you would like to add a little more excitement to your Kauai helicopter tour , check out our Jack Harter Doors Off Helicopter Tour in their Hughes 500. The Hughes 500 can hold 4 passengers in addition to the pilot and adds even more thrill without doors. Envision yourself flying over the tree tops with the wind in your hair. Soaring through jungle valleys and flying inside ancient canyons. Photographers especially love flying without doors as there is no window glare to deal with.

The island tours flown in the Hughes 500 are different from any of the others. Removing the doors from the helicopter can often make the flights feel more thrilling than those flown in a helicopter with doors. You should bring a jacket or sweater, wear long pants and footwear that won’t fly out the door while touring. We do not recommend wearing the rubbah slippahs.

This hour long tour is the perfect introduction to all of the Garden Isle’s natural wonders. Provides ample time for the pilot to show you Kauai’s most popular and most magical sites, rotating the aircraft to give you 360 degree views. Any tour less than an hour long will leave you begging for more time in the air. Do not forget. On this heli-tour, you will be flying with NO doors! We promise that this is an exhilarating way to see the island, but if you are unsure about having the doors off, we have many other options to choose from.

I live in Scotland but interested in booking a trip for my son and his new wife when they visit Kauai later this month – how busy are the tours – should we book before they travel ? Looking for some advice.

Aloha Linda! Yes be sure to book this tour before they arrive. Space is very limited and being summertime the island is busy all tours will sell out. Do not hesitate to ask any other questions you may have along the way.

I’ve take Jack Harter’s DOORS OFF tours twice before and am booked for another this March, 2020. I cannot recommends it highly enough!! It’s exciting and the very best way to experience the incredible scenery. (OK, I’ll admit to a couple minutes of sheer terror the first time we banked to the right and I was looking straight down at the ground far below! But after that, I LOVED IT!!)

Make your reservations as soon as you have hotel and flights confirmed!!

Mahalo for the awesome feedback Katharine! We look forward to your arrival this March!

Kauai Helicopter Tours: Doors-On vs Doors-Off – What’s the Difference?

kauai helicopter tour doors off

Experiencing the jaw-dropping natural beauty of Kauai from the air on a helicopter tour is truly a bucket-list experience. But one big decision looms – should you book a doors-on or doors-off helicopter flight? This guide breaks down the key differences between these two thrilling options for your Kauai aerial adventure.

Opting for one of these Kauai helicopter tours typically involves soaring over Waimea Canyon, the Napali Coast, Tunnels Beach, Mt. Waialeale, numerous waterfalls, and more. Most flights last around an hour, with choices for shorter or longer durations, including stopovers. Departure points include Lihue Airport , the island’s primary airstrip, and Princeville Airport , located on the north side of Kauai.

Pros and Cons of Doors-On Kauai Helicopter Tours

The classic doors-on helicopter tour offers incredible views of Kauai’s landmarks like the Napali Coast, Waimea Canyon, waterfalls, and more – all from the comfort of an enclosed cabin. While you won’t get the same open-air thrill, doors-on flights have their own advantages:

  • Comfort : The doors and windows provide a sheltered environment, making it a smoother experience especially for those sensitive to wind and cold temperatures at higher altitudes.
  • Security : Some tourists simply feel more at ease in a fully enclosed cabin rather than the potential vertigo of open doors.
  • Photography : While photo opportunities are possible, angles and scope can be limited by having to shoot through glass windows which can introduce glare and reflections.

Advantages of Doors-Off Helicopter Flights in Kauai

For many thrill-seekers, a doors-off helicopter tour is the only way to experience Kauai’s staggering beauty up close and personal. These are the biggest draws:

  • Unobstructed Views : With nothing between you and the landscapes, you’ll get unbeatable 360-degree panoramic views and a sense of freedom.
  • Open Air Thrill : The feeling of soaring with just a seatbelt separating you from the sky is unmatched. The wind in your face adds an extra adrenaline rush!
  • Photography : Aerial photographers and videographers flock to doors-off flights to capture shots without any glass interference. You can get crisp, glare-free pictures from unlimited angles.

Photography Opportunities

  • Doors-Off : Ideal for capturing pictures with an unobstructed view and without window glare, allowing for a broader range of scenery. Highly recommended for amateur and professional aerial photography or videography .
  • Doors-On : Offers good photo opportunities, but may limit the scope and angles for capturing images due to having to shoot through glass windows.

Best Doors-Off Kauai Helicopter Tour

Recently, we decided to go on a doors-off helicopter tour over Kauai—it was insane but also very peaceful. Undoubtedly, this was the most memorable aspect of our stay in Kauai (during both trips). It ranks among the most extraordinary experiences we’ve ever had.

kauai helicopter tour doors off

Expressing the sensation of witnessing such beauty from the air is beyond words, and opting for a helicopter with no doors was unquestionably the perfect choice! We went with Air Kauai Helicopters because they fly Airbus AStars—pilots can remove the door so that there’s one giant opening.

Magnum P.I. Helicopter

However, if you prefer the Magnum P.I. look, you should check out the Hughes 500 (MD500) Doors-Off Tour flown by Airborne Aviation Tours. Moreover, the Hughes 500 is a bit smaller and lighter (meaning more potential turbulence), only allowing four passengers versus five on the Eurocopter AStar. Also, the structure of the Hughes 500 doesn’t allow for the entire window to be open due to a support beam separating the front and back row passengers.

Nevertheless, if you’re a diehard fan of the show, you should head to Oahu and go on the Magnum Doors-Off Helicopter Ride in a Magnum P.I. lookalike chopper. Now, that would be a cool experience!

Best Doors-On Kauai Helicopter Tour

kauai helicopter tour doors off

Our very first helicopter tour over Kauai was with Blue Hawaiian Helicopters in a traditional doors-on helicopter, and it was amazing! They utilize Airbus Eco-Stars and Airbus A-Stars designed specifically for flight tours—the Airbus Eco-Stars are the most state-of-the-art and most comfortable tourism-based helicopters available. In our opinion, the Eco-Stars are the safest and most trustworthy helicopters on the market.

🚁 Doors-On Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tour > Check Availability

Established in 1985 and recognized by National Geographic as “ Hawaii’s premier helicopter tour company ,” Blue Hawaiian holds the distinction of being the sole provider servicing all of Hawaii’s major islands—Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island. Pioneering innovation in the industry, Blue Hawaiian introduced the extraordinary Eco-Star, the world’s inaugural 21st-century touring helicopter.

Doors-Off vs. Doors-On > Kauai Helicopter Tours

When reserving a helicopter tour, you may encounter the choice between a doors-on or doors-off option, a decision that can significantly alter your helicopter ride in various ways. The selection between the two depends on your preferences and the experience you seek from your helicopter tour.

kauai helicopter tour doors off

Here are some considerations that differentiate a doors-off and doors-on helicopter experience:

Photography

  • Doors-Off : Ideal for capturing pictures with an unobstructed view and without window glare, allowing for a broader range of scenery. Highly recommended for amateur and professional aerial photography or videography. If this interests you, be sure to check out this photography-focused Kauai helicopter tour .
  • Doors-On : Offers good photo opportunities, but may limit the scope and angles for capturing images.

💰 Budget-Savvy Tip : Be sure to read this article on how to take photos from a helicopter before your flight.

Route Around the Island

  • Doors-Off or Doors-On : The route for all helicopters, regardless of doors-off or doors-on follows a similar route—clockwise around the island. If you’re an aviation nerd like Harry you can go to Flightradar24 and watch the routes the helicopters fly.

kauai helicopter tour doors off

Value on Heights vs. Sights

  • Doors-Off : Provides a more thrilling experience, especially if you prioritize the full-flight adventure and the sensation of soaring to new heights.
  • Doors-On : Still offers a spectacular view of landmarks; suitable if you primarily want to enjoy the sights without the emphasis on the helicopter experience.

Fear of Heights

  • Doors-Off : Exhilarating and breathtaking for many, but some individuals might experience anxiety due to the more open feel. Despite the lack of doors, a helicopter tour ensures a high level of safety with passengers comfortably tethered inside.
  • Doors-On : Offers a sense of enclosed security, suitable for those with apprehensions about an open setting.

Flying with Others

  • Doors-Off or Doors-On : Consider the preferences of all passengers. Some may prefer the excitement of no doors, while others may prioritize a closed-door experience. Some services may offer a compromise, allowing one side open and another closed.

Cold Sensitivity

  • Doors-Off : Higher altitudes can bring increased wind and chill; advisable to dress accordingly with a light jacket and, if taking pictures, consider wearing gloves.
  • Doors-On : Less exposed to the elements, making it more comfortable for those sensitive to cold.

Flying Over Kauai is Mind-Blowing

kauai helicopter tour doors off

During our recent journey through the Hawaiian island of Kauai , we couldn’t resist the opportunity to experience a helicopter flight with the doors off over the island’s renowned Napali coastline! Although helicopter tours may come with a substantial cost, certain destinations are simply meant to be captured from the unique perspective of a helicopter—like the Grand Canyon or high above the glaciers in Alaska .

kauai helicopter tour doors off

The sheer beauty of Kauai is awe-inspiring . The Napali Coast, characterized by scalloped cliffs that rise majestically above the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean, resembles scenes from postcards and iconic Jurassic Park movies.

kauai helicopter tour doors off

However, just like on some areas in Maui , accessing the renowned Napali Coast and much of the island’s interior is impossible by car, making a helicopter flight the perfect means to soar above these stunning landscapes .

kauai helicopter tour doors off

Below are the two helicopter rides we went on—one with doors-off and one with doors-on. Initially, we’ll discuss the doors-off experience since that’s the one just about everyone wants to hear about first.

💰 Budget-Savvy Tip : It’s advisable to schedule your helicopter tour early in your vacation, allowing flexibility for rescheduling in case of inclement weather on your initially chosen date.

General Tips

  • Compromise : Some services may allow a mix of open and closed doors depending on passenger preferences.
  • Discuss Preferences : Communicate your door preferences and whether you plan to take pictures with the helicopter tour service in advance.

Whether you seek the thrill of a doors-off adventure or the comfort of doors-on security, there are plenty of Kauai helicopter tours available to meet your preferences.

No matter which you pick, booking well in advance is highly recommended especially for peak seasons. It’s also wise to schedule your helicopter tour at the start of your trip to allow flexibility for rescheduling due to weather. Also, if you opt for the doors-off tour don’t forget to bring a light water-resistant jacket .

Whether soaring above paradise with the doors on or off, a helicopter tour is an absolute must for fully experiencing the unrivaled beauty of Kauai!

What is it like to take a helicopter tour of Kauai?

Do you remember that iconic moment in the original  Jurassic Park  movie  when they are approaching the island in a helicopter, and the dramatic theme music plays as they fly along the prehistoric-looking coast?

That’s exactly what it feels like during helicopter tours of Kauai.

Because that is exactly what you are doing!

That scene from Jurassic Park was actually filmed on the approach to the Na Pali coast, on Kauai’s North Shore, which is one of the two main reasons to take Kauai helicopter tours.

Na Pali is only viewable  by boat  or by Kauai helicopter rides, and if you want the most epic view of the landscape, a helicopter is the way to go.

The other reason to take a helicopter tour? Waimea Canyon. The “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”

It is possible to see parts of Waimea Canyon by a combination of driving and hiking, but you will only get a hint of the wonder of this ten-mile-long canyon.

But flying through the canyon, past countless waterfalls, and seeing the jungle sprawled out below you – that is how you truly come to appreciate the sheer size and grandeur of Waimea Canyon.

Taking a tour of Kauai by air is an experience that you will not forget.

What is the process for taking a Kauai helicopter tour?

First, you will want to book it ahead of time for your Kauai vacation.

Yes, there are plenty of tour operators that you can find around the cruise ship terminal in Lihue that are happy to take same-day bookings.

But you will really want to do your research ahead of time and choose a reputable operator.

We went with  Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours  for their vast experience and impeccable safety record and because they are one of the very best helicopter tours for private tours.

When you arrive, you’ll go through a safety briefing, and then you’ll head out to meet your pilot at the airfield.

They will get you all buckled up, go over any last-minute safety reminders, and then you’re off! The vertical take-off is thrilling and nerve-wracking, but within minutes you are out over the jungles of the island.

Most Mauna Loa helicopter tours are in the 45-60 minute range, although you can find longer ones.

While some of the sites that they visit may vary, you can bet that every tour is going to show you Waimea Canyon, the rugged Na Pali Coast, and  Manawaiopuna Falls .

There are even tours available that stop midway through for a picnic and photo op!

What are the types of Kauai helicopter tours available?

When you are looking to book a helicopter tour, you will have a few options. You’ll first need to choose if you want to share the helicopter with other people or book a private tour.

Shared tours usually have 6 passengers. And while this doesn’t seem like much, it is possible that you will have your view impaired by another passenger.

If you are hoping to get good photographs of this for your Kauai vacation, this is particularly worrisome.

Some of the best Kauai helicopter tours are better than others for visibility, so read about the particular helicopter for any flight you are considering booking.

You also might not get seated next to your travel partner. They balance the helicopter for weight, so you will not have any say in where you sit.

The next thing you’ll need to choose is whether or not you want doors on your helicopter.

Opting for a Kauai doors-off helicopter tour gives you the advantage of having a better view and not getting any glare on your photos. It’s windier and sometimes a bit wet!

But Kauai doors off helicopter tours give you an unparalleled view of the scenery and make you feel much closer to the landscape.

If having the doors off seems inherently scarier, remember – it is not the doors that are keeping you safe. It is your seat harness and the skills of your pilot.

It will be imperative that you do not have any loose items on you when you fly. Cameras will need to be strapped to your body.

We opted for the private, doors-off tour.

While this was a splurge for us, we figured it was probably the only time we would ever do a helicopter tour, and we wanted to do it the best way we could.

We have not regretted this decision once! The best Kauai helicopter tours are pricey either way. May as well make the most of it on this stunning Hawaiian island!

Can you bring kids on a Kauai helicopter tour?

Yes, although the age requirements will vary by the tour operator.

Some operators have a minimum age of around 7, while others will allow children of any age, including lap infants (under 2), for free. Lap infants will not have a seat belt, however.

If you are traveling with young children, you will really want to think about if they will be able to handle sitting buckled into an adult-sized harness for an hour, especially considering they might not even be able to see past other passengers.

You also might not get seated next to your child, depending on the weight distribution, although most operators will try to seat families together when possible.

When we visited, we were  traveling with a baby  and a toddler. We ended up using a  local babysitter agency  and turned it into a wonderfully memorable half-day date.

  Are Kauai helicopter tours safe?

This is undoubtedly a question that has crossed your mind if you are considering helicopter rides in Kauai.

And given a few high-profile helicopter crashes in the last few years – including one on Kauai – it is only natural to be nervous.

Of course, there is always risk in something like a helicopter flight. They are statistically more dangerous than a commercial airplane flight, although they are less dangerous than flying in a private plane.

Tour-operated helicopters are significantly safer than private helicopters, as well.

Helicopter flight has become much less risky over the past few decades, but there are occasional incidents.

Of the Hawaiian islands, Kauai has seen the highest number of helicopter crashes, although they are still incredibly rare.

Ensure that you choose a reputable tour operator that adheres to the highest level of safety standards. Expect that if there is adverse weather, your tour will be canceled.

For this reason, it is a good idea to book your helicopter flight early in your trip so that you can reschedule if needed!

We never felt unsafe during our helicopter tour. The flight was smooth, and we were impressed with our pilot’s level of experience.

Is a Kauai helicopter tour worth the money?

Without a doubt, yes!

The breathtaking scenery of the NaPali Coast and Waimea Canyon are best viewed from the air, especially a bird’s eye view!

There is no better way to experience the natural wonder of the Garden Isle than by flying above the jungle in a Kauai island helicopter.

It is a once-in-a-lifetime type of experience that you will treasure, along with incredible photos, especially if you choose a doors-off tour.

If you are coming to Kauai, I highly recommend taking a few hours out to see the beauty that this island has to offer!
