Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, is a city located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Reminiscent of all that is spiritual and sacred in Hinduism, Prayagraj is famous for Triveni Sangam or the meeting point of three rivers - the Ganga, the Yamuna, and the Saraswati. Built on the site of the ancient town of Prayag, Prayagraj has, since time immemorial, held the largest Hindu gathering on the banks of the Sangam - the Maha Kumbh Mela . Prayag or Prayagraj had been the ancient name of the city of Allahabad. Pra means “first” and Yag means “devotion”. Prayag also signifies the coming together of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. After the Mughal invasion, Emperor Akbar, impressed by the location named the city Ilahabas which meant “Abode of God”. Emperor Shah Jahan, his grandson, renamed the city to Allahabad. One of the top places to visit in Prayagraj, if you’re spiritually inclined (and even if you’re not because this place deserves a visit), Triveni Sangam is a place bustling with tourists and locals all year round. The Maha Kumbh Mela is a religious occasion that is held here every twelve years and is attended by millions of pilgrims from all across the globe. The Allahabad Fort is another monument of historical significance and is a heritage site recognized by UNESCO. Built during the reign of Akbar, this fort is also a fine example of the curation and craftsmanship of the Mughal era. Veni Madhav Mandir

2. the revered temple of veni madhav.

As the story goes in Padma Puran , Lord Bhahma prayed to Lord Vishnu while performing yajna on the pious land of Prayag for its protection.

After the successful completion of the yajna, he established his twelve forms in Prayagraj.

Shri Veni Madhav is also considered as the most revered God of Prayagraj. A huge number of devotees line up to for Darshan of their revered God throughout the year.

It is believed that without the darshan of Shri Veni Madhav, the pilgrimage of Prayag and Panchkosi Parikrama is not considered complete.

The idol of Lord Hanuman here was established by Saint Samarth Guru Ramdas .

Shri Ram-Janki temples and Harit Madhava temple are located nearby to it.

This Ashram is associated with Sage Bharadwaj and is a renowned religious place. It was famous as an educational centre during the time of Sage Bharadwaj.

James Digges La Touche opened Victoria Memorial on 24th of March 1906.

Prayag Sangeet Samiti was established in the year 1926 with a view to popularize and teach Indian Classical music amongst the masses in India.

This institution is registered under the Indian Societies Act of 1860 . The basic objective of the Samiti has always been to revive the prestige of the art of music comprising vocal music, instrumental music, dance and to organize systematic training in this art in India and in foreign countries, besides reaching it to people at large.

With this end in view, the Samiti had been devotedly applying itself to solid work for the last 62 years.

Allahabad University

Allahabad University has always occupied an esteemed place among the universities of India for over a century now. It was established way back on 23rd September 1887.

It is the fourth oldest university of India after Calcutta, Bombay and Madras University.

The credit for conceiving a large Central College at Prayagraj (erstwhile Allahabad), eventually to develop into a University, is due to Sir William Muir, then Lt. Governor of United Provinces.

As a result of his initiative the foundation stone of the Muir Central College (named after him) was laid on Dec. 9 1873 by His Excellency Lord Northbrook.

Vijay Nagram Hall, Senate Hall (Darbar Hall), SSL Hostel are the major buildings of Allahabad University.

Chandra Shekhar Azad Park Ground

8. chandrashekhar azad park.

In British colonial era it was known as Alfred Park and informally as Company Bagh. It was built in 1870 to mark Prince Alfred's visit to the city.

It is the biggest public park in Prayagraj with an area of 133 acres.

The park was renamed after freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad, who sacrificed his life here, during the Indian independence struggle in 1931.

Allahabad Public Library

9. public library.

This is the oldest library of the city. It houses a large number of rare books, manuscripts and journals. This library was established in 1864 at the Chaitham Lines Area.

After the construction of the present building in 1878, the library was shifted here. This imposing building has been associated with another glorious chapter too.

The first Legislative Council of the State organised its first meeting in this building on January 8, 1887. Fourteen council meetings were held here.

Constructed in the memory of Lord Thornhill and Mayne, this building is a beautiful example of Gothic architecture.

10. Ganga Gallery (National Academy Of Science)

This Gallery uses a scientific aspect approach in order to highlight the religious, cultural, socio-economic & scientific aspects of the river Ganga.

11. Shree Akhileshwar Mahadev

Shree Akhileshwar Mahadev complex is spread over an area of about 500 sq. feet. The foundation stones were laid on 30th October 2004 by Parampoojya Swami Tejomayanandaji and Poojya Swami Subodhanandaji of Chinmaya Mission.

Pink sand stones from Rajasthan are being carved and fixed to give shape to Shree Akhileshwar Mahadev Dhyan Mandapam over the Foundation floor.

The foundation floor is designed to accommodate a Satsang Bhavan having a capacity of about 300 persons and all the essential services for Shree Akhileshwar Mahadev.

12. Dashashwamedha Temple

Lord Brahma had performed Ashwamedha Yajna here.

Dashashwamedheshwar Mahadev-Shiva linga, idols of Nandi, Sheshnag and a big Trishul (trident) are enshrined in the temple.

A marble slab bearing the image of a footprints in memory of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is also installed here.

Nearby are the temples of Goddess Annapoorna, Lord Hanuman and Lord Ganesh.

13. Takshakeshwar Nath Temple

This is a temple of Takshakeshwar Lord Shankar. A little away is the Takshak Kund in the Yamuna.

Legend has in it that Takshak, the serpent had taken shelter here after it was chased out of Mathura by Lord Krishna .

Khusro Bagh

khusro bagh is a large walled garden and burial complex. It is listed as an Indian Site of National Importance.

It is situated over forty acres and is shaped as a quadrangle.

Khusrau Bagh

It includes the tombs of Shah Begum (born Manbhawati Bai), Jahangir's Rajput; Khusrau Mirza(Jahangir's eldest son and briefly heir apparent to the Mughal throne); and Nithar Begum(Khusrau Mirza's sister and Jahangir's daughter).

The meeting point or the confluence of three of the most important rivers in the Hindu religion, Triveni Sangam, is a holy place located in Allahabad. It is one of the most popular and sacred places to visit in Allahabad, and is often a host to some of the most important fairs and festivals of the religion.

The rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Sarawati meet at the Sangam. Due to the popularity of the region, the entire city of Allahabad is also sometimes referred to as Sangam. Every 12 years, an incredibly auspicious festival called the Kumbh Mela is organized at this location, while every six years, the Ardh Kumbh is hosted here.

Both of these festivals see a massive influx of tourists and locals to the Sangam. प्रयागराज। विश्व प्रसिद्ध संगम, अक्षयवट, मंदिर, प्राचीन किला, आजाद शहीद स्थल, इलाहाबाद विश्वविद्यालय, आनंद भवन, खुसरोबाग जैसे धार्मिक और ऐतिहासिक धरोहरों को संजोने वाली संगमनगरी में आज भी एक बड़ी जरूरत अच्छे होटलों की है। शायद यही कारण है कि करीब के जिले लखनऊ और वाराणसी में जहां पर्यटक रुकते हैं, वहीं प्रयागराज में आगमन तो लाखों पर्यटकों का होता है, लेकिन कोई यहां ठहरता नहीं। देश विदेश से आने वाले पर्यटकों की इस समस्या का समाधान अब जल्द ही होगा। इस महाकुम्भ से प्रयागराज को अन्य सौगातों के साथ ही पांच और चार सितारा होटल भी मिलने जा रहा है। इससे शहर का न सिर्फ पर्यटन बढ़ेगा, बल्कि यहां पर लोगों को रोजगार के नए अवसर भी मिलेंगे। इसके साथ ही हेरिटेज होटलों की सौगात भी शहर को मिलने जा रही है।

पांच सितारा रेडिसन बनकर तैयार

शहर का पहला पांच सितारा रेडिसन होटल लगभग तैयार हो चुका है। सिविल लाइंस में सरोजनी नायडू मार्ग पर बन रहे इस होटल में सभी सुविधाएं होंगी। बहुमंजिला इमारत वाला यह होटल लगभग तैयार हो चुका है। अक्तूबर तक इसके खुलने की तैयारी है। इसके पहले शहर में कोई भी पांच सितारा होटल नहीं खुला था। लगभग 75 करोड़ रुपये की लागत से तैयार हो रहे इस होटल के अंदर का पूरा हिस्सा तैयार हो चुका है। होटल के मुशीर अहमद का कहना है कि इसमें 114 कमरे, छह स्वीट, चार रेस्टोरेंट, एक बार, एक काफी हाउस, 800 लोगों का बैंक्वेट हॉल तो होगा ही साथ ही इसके आकर्षण का केंद्र रूफ टॉप पर बना स्वीमिंग पूल भी होगा। होटल का उद्घाटन अक्तूबर में किया जाएगा।

चार सितारा होटल नवरात्र में खुलेगा

होटलों की इस शृंखला में पांच सितारा के साथ ही चार सितारा होटल भी शामिल हैं। इसमें सर्किट हाउस के एकदम करीब रुद्राक्ष द होटल खुलने जा रहा है। इसका उद्घाटन आगामी नवरात्र में होगा। यहां विवाह घर, लॉन, कॉन्फ्रेंस हॉल, 30 कमरे और अंडर ग्राउंड पार्किंग जैसी सभी सुविधाएं दी जाएंगी। होटल के रचित राज गुप्ता का कहना है कि हमारा काम पूरा हो चुका है। वहीं सिविल लाइंस में ही स्काईहुड भी खुलेगा, जो फोर स्टार कैटेगरी में आता है।

दो हेरिटेज होटल भी हो गए तैयार

इसके अलावा जिले में दो हेरिटेज होटल बनकर तैयार हो गए हैं। प्रयागराज में आने वाले पर्यटकों को न केवल पांच सितारा होटल का सुख मिलेगा, बल्कि वो कोठीनुमा होटल में भी वक्त गुजार सकेंगे। जिले की दो पुरानी कोठियों ने इसके लिए आवेदन कर काम शुरू करा दिया है। मम्फोर्डगंज में होटल शगुन और होटल होम स्टे भी बनकर तैयार हो गया है। इसमें पुरानी कोठी का लुक दिया गया है। जहां पर ठहरने पर महल का एहसास होगा। बड़े कमरे, पुराने मैदान जैसे लुक इस होटल में दिए गए हैं।

पर्यटन विभाग का ‘त्रिवेणी दर्शन भी संवर रहा

पर्यटन विभाग के यमुना बैंक रोड पर होटल त्रिवेणी दर्शन में 18 नए कमरों का निर्माण किया जा रहा है। लगभग छह लाख रुपये की लागत से यह संवर रहा है। महाकुम्भ के दौरान यहां पर पर्यटक ठहरेंगे और फिर बोट से संगम भी जा सकेंगे। वहीं सिविल लाइंस के होटल इलावर्त में 22 कमरों का नवीनीकरण किया जा रहा है। वरिष्ठ प्रबंधक डीपी सिंह का कहना है कि इसके लिए 22.60 लाख रुपये का बजट स्वीकृत किया गया है। यहां पर कॉरिडोर, हॉल को पूरी तरह से नया बनाया जा रहा है।

दो दर्जन नए होटल खुल जाएंगे

इन बड़े होटलों के निर्माण व विकास के साथ ही तमाम छोटे-छोटे होटलों का विकास हो रहा है। क्षेत्रीय पर्यटन अधिकारी अपराजिता सिंह का कहना है कि महाकुम्भ से पहले प्रयागराज में लगभग दो दर्जन नए होटल खुल जाएंगे। जहां पर पर्यटकों को ठहरने की सुविधा मिल जाएगी। साथ ही इन होटलों के खुलने से शहरियों को रोजगार के अवसर भी मिलेंगे।

होटल इंडस्ट्री सबसे खास होती है। कुम्भ नगरी में एक पांच सितारा होटल खुलना चाहिए था। इसके लिए हम सभी ने काफी प्रयास किया। अच्छी बात है कि इस महाकुम्भ से पहले यह होटल खुल रहा है। जिससे पर्यटकों को बेहतरीन सुविधाएं मिलेंगी।

Uttar Pradesh’s New Star Classification Policy for Hotels Set to Boost Prayagraj Tourism Ahead of Mahakumbh-2025

The Yogi Adityanath government’s new star classification policy for hotels and resorts, introduced in December 2023 to promote tourism in Uttar Pradesh, will now be implemented in Sangam city. District officials have begun efforts in collaboration with the tourism department.

A recent meeting at a city hotel, organized by the tourism department and the Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA), saw officials discussing the implementation of this new system with local hoteliers in preparation for Mahakumbh-2025. The new classification aims to increase the availability of hotel rooms, improve facilities, and offer subsidies and incentives comparable to industry standards.

The system will categorize hotels into five groups: Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver, and Bronze, aligning with the traditional star ratings of 5-star to 1-star. This classification will help tourists choose accommodations more easily and encourage higher service standards. Hotels recognized under this system will receive various incentives, including subsidies and tax benefits.

The Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (UPSTDC) is the nodal agency for this initiative. Over 100 hoteliers from Prayagraj and surrounding areas attended the meeting, organized by the Prayagraj Hotel and Restaurant Association.

Harjinder Singh, President of the Prayagraj Hotel and Restaurant Association, noted that the local hotel industry has seen rapid development since the Yogi government took office, particularly after Kumbh-2019. The tourism development of the Ayodhya, Kashi, and Prayagraj Golden Triangle has increased tourist numbers in Prayagraj, spurring further growth in the hotel industry.

Mahakumbh-2025: Hotel classification system now in Prayagraj too

Yogi adityanath govt introduces new star classification policy for hotels in up, now extended to prayagraj to boost tourism ahead of mahakumbh-2025..

The new policy of star classification of hotels and resorts in the state introduced in December 2023 by the Yogi Adityanath government to promote tourism industry in Uttar Pradesh will now also be promoted and implemented in Sangam city.

Efforts in this regard have started in earnest with the cooperation of the tourism department, informed district officials.

A meeting in this regard was recently organised in a city hotel by the tourism department and Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) with the hoteliers of Prayagraj that saw the officials sharing the plans for the implementation of this new system ahead of the Mahakumbh-2025, officials added.

The objective of the new classification system is to provide availability of more hotel rooms in the state, improve the hospitality industry with better facilities, and provide subsidies and incentives to hotels and resorts at par with the industry, officials shared.

The new star classification system will classify hotels based on their quality, services and overall facilities and guest experience, thereby boosting tourism. The new revised system includes five different categories – Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver and Bronze. These categories correspond to the traditional star ratings of the hotel industry prescribed by the ministry of tourism with 5-star, 4-star, 3-star, 2-star and one star classification respectively. This revised system will simplify the selection process for tourists and encourage higher service standards among hotels.

The hotels recognised under this system will be eligible for various incentives and will get industry standard subsidies and tax benefits, said officials.

Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (UPSTDC) is the designated nodal agency for the implementation of the new system in the state.

More than 100 hoteliers from Prayagraj and surrounding areas participated in the meeting organised under the aegis of Prayagraj Hotel and Restaurant Association.

President of Prayagraj Hotel and Restaurant Association Harjinder Singh said that the hotel industry in Prayagraj was not very developed, but after the Yogi government coming to power, especially after the Kumbh-2019, it is developing rapidly. The development of Ayodhya, Kashi and Prayagraj Golden Triangle in the field of tourism has increased the number of tourists arriving in Prayagraj. Due to this, the hotel industry is also moving forward, he maintained.

Chief patron of the association Vidup Agrahari said that star classification will give great relief to hotel owners in terms of paying tax.

On this occasion, vice chairman of Prayagraj Development Authority Arvind Chauhan highlighted the important points and policies implemented by the Uttar Pradesh government for promoting tourism.

Regional tourism officer of Prayagraj Aparajita Singh made a presentation of the new system on behalf of her department highlighting the key points of the star classification system of hotels. She said that a key feature of this new star classification system are the subsidies and incentives to hotels and resorts at par with the industry so that they can also improve their facilities and tourists can get quality facilities.

NEWPORT – Yes, Newport is busier this season than it has been over the past five years. 

“We have already surpassed where we were before COVID for sure. We were there even last year,” Discover Newport Executive Director Evan Smith said. 

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Newport saw a sharp decline in visitation. Hotels got fewer bookings, restaurants were getting fewer customers and even the number of people physically driving over the Pell Bridge dropped from 1,034,685 in June 2019 to 993,001 in June 2020.

This 4% reduction in Pell Bridge traffic may seem small, but coupled with a 51% decrease in tax revenue from the meal and beverage tax and a 56% reduction in hotel bed tax revenue over the same time period, the pandemic had made a ghost town out of the City by the Sea, at least compared with normal operations.

People slowly returned over the next few years, with the hospitality industry surpassing 2019 numbers at different rates. The revenue the state recorded out of the meal and beverage tax exceeded 2019 numbers by 2021, recording a 112.4% improvement over the course of a year. Hotel bed taxes were slower to recover, but surpassed the amount collected in 2019 by 2022. 

Could higher hotel prices skew the numbers?

These numbers, however, could be inflated as a result of increased prices rather than increased sales transactions. For example, the average daily rate to book a hotel in Newport County and Bristol County rocketed in 2022, from $168 to $224, according to Discover Newport’s financial audit data . This number has ballooned dramatically even since then, with Newport hotel rooms costing an average of $466 by July 2024.

Despite this, average occupancy nearly matched 2019 levels and officially surpassed them by 2023. 

“There was this euphoria, like being locked in jail and when you got out of jail, you would pay anything to travel again, and people did, but that wasn’t going to happen forever,” Smith said. “It was a falsely inflated market, frankly.”

Smith said he believes there is a correction in the lodging industry where room rates will lower as more people decline to pay the post-pandemic room rates. The data Discover Newport collected through one third-party hospitality analytics group showed that the average occupancy dropped from 74% in June 2023 to 69% in June 2024.

The Preservation Society of Newport County, which runs the popular Newport mansion museums, had reopened all properties for tours by 2023, according to the organization's annual report. It, too, recovered quickly from the pandemic in terms of visitation and finances, as the organization recorded $2 million more in revenue in 2021 than the $25 million it had collected in 2019 .

Cars tell an interesting story

The numbers of people crossing the Pell Bridge, despite a few fluctuations, would not exceed 2019 levels until December 2023. As a result of the Washington Bridge closure in Providence , Newport saw an increase in travelers seeking alternative routes, with 28,000 more crossings recorded that month than there had been in December 2019. By January 2024, the number of crossings fell, but the numbers still remained just above the threshold established in 2019, with July 2024 marking a five-year record of 1,167,173 crossings. This is just 7,404 more crossings than had occurred in July 2019.

Still, it may not just be the volume of people in town, but the rate at which they have returned. While it’s true that there were only 0.6% more crossings in July 2024 than during the same month in 2019, because of the steep drop between 2019 and 2020, there was a 22% increase in crossings in July 2021 compared with the same time in 2020. July 2022 added 1.6% to that figure, and it increased in 2023 by 1.2%, but July 2024 kicked the figure over the 2019 goal by ramping up crossings by 5.8%.

Parking data reflects a similar increase between 2023 and 2024. In May through July 2024, the city collected 15% more parking revenue from the Gateway Center than it had at the same time in 2023. 

International travel slower to recover

While there have been increases overall, Smith said there are still ups and downs within the hospitality sector and travel industry. He pointed out that international travel to Newport has yet to recover from the dramatic drop it experienced during the pandemic, something that happened after Sept. 11, 2001, and again after the 2008 financial crisis. 

“I cite that because in all three times, we’ve built it back up, but it doesn’t happen in a year,” Smith said. “It takes three to five years to restore that type of percentage. Just before COVID, we were at 15% to 16% of our visitor population being from a country other than the United States, and during COVID it went down to zero. ... We’re now back up to 8% or 9%, but we should be tracking somewhere around 13% to 14%, so we’re probably another year or two away from restoring the lost share of international travel.”

Since different hospitality industries experience highs and lows at different rates than their peers, Smith warned against generalizing how the industry is doing based on one or two metrics. Several factors affect those metrics, such as good weather, changing hotel rates, bridge closures from across the state and increases in parking rates. Smith said he gauges industry success by talking with business owners. 

“I’m hearing good things, I’m hearing good feedback, the family is happy,” Smith said. “My family is lodging, attractions, shopping, dining, recreation, transportation, and all my family members are happy. There’s good business, there’s a lot of commerce going on and that’s a good thing.”

Middle East Tourism Surges, Hotel Construction Hits All-Time High

The Middle East is one of the few regions to already be ahead of 2019 tourism, led by Saudi Arabia's transformation plan.

Skift’s State of Travel 2024 report highlighted that the Middle East and Africa are seeing a surge in international tourism, driven largely by Saudi Arabia’s push in recent years.

Here is the recent performance across Saudi, the UAE, Qatar and Egypt, four key tourism markets in the region.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia saw a combined 60 million international and domestic tourists in the first six months of the year. The kingdom did not share the split between international and domestic numbers.

Tourists in the period contributed $38.1 billion in expenditure during the first half of 2024.

Closed off to international tourism until 2019, Saudi Arabia has a target of 150 million tourists by the end of the decade, with 70 million coming from overseas. The country also wants tourism to become its second-largest industry behind oil.

Dubai continued its upward trajectory in tourism, recording 9.31 million international overnight visitors from January to June 2024. This marks a 9% increase compared to the 8.55 million arrivals in the same period in 2023, according to data from the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET).

Visitor statistics breakdown:

• GCC and MENA Markets:  26% of total visitors, with 1.27 million (14%) from GCC and 1.09 million (12%) from MENA
• Western Europe:  20% share, totaling 1.89 million visitors
• South Asia:  1.62 million visitors (17%)
• CIS and Eastern Europe:  1.37 million visitors (15%)
• North-East and South-East Asia:  10% share (896,000 visitors), driven by recovery from China
• Americas:  617,000 visitors (7%)
• Africa:  404,000 visitors (4%)
• Australasia:  154,000 visitors (2%)

Qatar saw 2.63 million international tourists in the first half of 2024, 28% higher than the same period in 2023.

Saudi Arabia continued to be the top contributor to international arrivals with 755,000 visitors – 29% of total visitors coming in by June of 2024.

The remaining top 10 visitor markets were India (8%), Bahrain (5%), UK (4%), Kuwait (4%), Oman (4%), Germany (4%), USA (3%), UAE (3%), Italy (2%).

Egypt brought in 7.069 million tourists in the first half of 2024, surpassing the previous record of 7.062 million set in the same period of 2023.

• Tourism Revenue:  $6.6 billion, a 5% increase from $6.3 billion in 2023, and an 18% growth from $5.6 billion in 2010

Hotel Construction in the Middle East

Hotel construction in the Middle East continues to increase as the region proves to be one of the most resilient travel markets around the globe. Data from Lodging Econometrics for the first half of the year shows 607 hotels are currently under construction in the region, with Saudi Arabia leading the charge with its ongoing economic transformation plan.

Markets such as Saudi and Egypt currently have an all-time high number of hotels being built, according to Lodging Econometrics.
