Louis Tomlinson pulls out all the stops for his show at The O2 in London

  • Wed 22nd November, 2023

At London’s O2 Arena, Louis has it all.

Words: Jessica Goodman. Photos: Sarah Louise Bennett .

“I’ve got these lot behind me, who the fuck is gonna stop us?” This question, asked by Louis Tomlinson moments after headlining his Away From Home festival for the first time two years ago, has become something of a mantra for his fans. It’s been shared on social media ad infinitum, worn on homemade merch, waved proudly on banners and signs, and shouted to the rafters at his concerts. Headlining a sold-out show at London’s O2 Arena on Friday night, it seems clear that the answer to his question is that no one ever will.

Taking place just over a year after the release of his celebrated second album ‘Faith In The Future’, and almost twelve years to the day after One Direction released their first record ‘Up All Night’, in the city where 1D formed and where he played his first full headline show as a solo artist, this might be the greatest full-circle moment of Louis’ career so far. But tonight isn’t a nostalgia trip, and there’s little time spent walking down memory lane. Instead, this show is all about the here and now, celebrating how a shared passion for music and the community that creates can build something that feels like magic.

louis tomlinson tour o2

From the moment he walks out on centre stage in front of his fans, Louis Tomlinson is at home – and his fans make themselves at home right along with him. Opening with ‘The Greatest’ – a song written for and about crowds and nights like tonight – it’s clear that, though it might’ve taken him a long time to get back here, stages like this one are where he belongs.

For tonight’s landmark show, he pulls out all the stops. A specially recorded video introduction? New and improved light shows? Pyrotechnics? A strings section on stage?! At London’s O2 Arena, Louis has it all. His dedication to making the night special is met by his fans in equal measure, using phone torches and synchronised apps to create light shows of their own.

louis tomlinson tour o2

A distinctive figure in trackies and a vest, Louis commands the room with ease. Playfully flipping fans off while singing, crouching down between songs to be closer to the people he’s talking to, he’s the star with his name in lights, but his show remains just as much about celebrating with the people that support him as it is about celebrating the music. Any mention of this sold-out show’s success is talked about as a collective. “O2, sold out?! You lot, unbelievable, right?!” he congratulates the crowd between songs.

Even when he’s talking about his own emotions, saying, “This might be the first time in my career where I have been under pressure tonight, and I feel fucking great about it,” it’s with acknowledgement to the people filling the room who make what he does possible. “You don’t have that confidence onstage unless you know you’ve got the best fucking fans in the world,” he states. “I never feel like I can find the words to ever truly thank you, but thank you, thank you, thank you.”

louis tomlinson tour o2

Restyling old songs to fit the sound he found for himself on his latest album (sir, we’re going to need a recording of ‘Back To You’ rock version ASAP) and giving a nod to his home county with a cover of fellow South Yorkshire sensations Arctic Monkeys between leading rapturous crowd singalongs to fan favourite hits, this is Louis Tomlinson at the top of his game.

“Look at what we’ve fucking done!” he yells to the room mid-set. The message, it seems, is clear: ain’t no one stopping Louis Tomlinson now.

Louis Tomlinson – Faith In The Future Tour at The O2 Arena

“Never in a million fucking years did I think I would play here,” an overwhelmed Louis Tomlinson told a sold-out crowd at London’s legendary O2 Arena last night (November 17) during his “Faith In The Future World Tour.”

A lot of people probably felt the same some years ago. If you had asked your average music fan around the time of One Direction’s hiatus if Tomlinson would be able to fill all 20,000 seats at the famous arena, they’d have probably placed a bet on other members. Tomlinson? Not a chance.

Well, this is where the Doncaster-born star has proven critics and music snobs wrong and shown that he is the underdog, once again. Following the release of his No. 1 sophomore album, Faith In The Future , released last November, the 31-year-old has spent a good portion of 2023 on a world tour, performing in venues where nosebleed seats exist.

Tomlinson’s ongoing success cannot simply be credited to the fact that he was one-fifth one of the biggest boy bands of all time. While, yes, those fans he first gained over 10 years ago still remain in support of him, it’s clear that his following have a personal connection to his own music outside of One Direction. This is particularly evident when he’s performing on stage. Throughout his 21-song set, screams and tears filled the venue as if each song was a monster hit. His fans knew the words to every song and you could see how much his music meant to them.

Opening with the loud drums of “The Greatest,” Tomlinson’s show was one ball of energy from start to finish. Personal highlights: “Kill My Mind,” “Drag Me Down,” his cover of the Arctic Monkeys song “505,” “Written All Over Your Face,” (HOW WAS THIS NOT A SINGLE?!), and his rocky rendition of the 2017 single “Back To You.” My only critique: “That’s The Way Love Goes” was nowhere to be heard 🙁

Giving full credit to his fans for making everything in his career possible, Tomlinson’s sincere and humble demeanor shined every time he spoke to the audience. It’s evident that his humanity plays a big part in his fans coming back for more. Their mutual respect for one another is transparent, and that was wholesome to see.

Louis Tomlinson on his solo career, album collaborators, One Direction and fair prices for fans

Louis Tomlinson on his solo career, album collaborators, One Direction and fair prices for fans

Louis Tomlinson is Music Week ’s cover star for our November issue - and he’s got plenty to say about his solo career ahead of album No.2.

You can get hold of the issue this week to read the wide-ranging interview with Louis Tomlinson, written by Charlotte Gunn.

Tomlinson is now an independent artist after 12 years in the major label system. Faith In The Future, released on November 11, marks a new deal with BMG , following a long spell with Syco (five One Direction albums and his debut solo release Walls). Tomlinson has 4.25 million monthly listeners on Spotify and the single Bigger Than Me is on 15m streams.

Tomlinson’s guitar-heavy second album has credits including Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, The 1975, Wolf Alice), Theo Hutchcraft (Hurts), Joe Cross (Courteeners), Dan Grech (The Killers, The Vaccines, Halsey), Nico Rebscher (Aurora, Alice Merton) and Rob Harvey (The Music, Kasabian).

Tomlinson wrapped his most recent tour – which included a stop at OVO Arena Wembley – in September. He’s also been championing some of his favourite acts - including The Vaccines, Hinds, Sun Room and Stone - at his own Away From Home Festival .

Ahead of the album release, Tomlinson has dropped a new single, Out Of My System, and confirmed UK and European dates for autumn 2023. The tour includes a stop at The O2 in London (November 17), as well as dates in Sheffield, Manchester, Glasgow, Brighton, Cardiff and Birmingham.

Here, in an exclusive preview of our Music Week cover story with Louis Tomlinson, we present some of the interview highlights…

Louis Tomlinson on his solo career “With hindsight, I always knew I wanted to do it. But the question was, could I? What would it sound like? It wasn’t as sudden as this, but in my brain it felt like I woke up one day and all of a sudden, the band had gone on a break. And it took me a long time to get over that idea. There was a petulance there, I wanted it the way I wanted it.”

Louis Tomlinson on the end of the Syco era “I think it probably made sense for both me and Syco to go opposite ways. I had my own frustrations, I’m sure they had their own frustrations with me to a degree. I wasn’t really the traditional Syco artist. So it was a bit of a no-brainer for me really, and I did feel relieved when I was out of that.”

Louis Tomlinson on his new label home at BMG “Everything BMG stands for is really important. The level of control, even the way that the deal is structured, everything makes you feel like you’re in control and they’re there to help. Yes, they offer opinions, but it’s not saying, ‘This is what the single or video should be.’ I needed that freedom because the last thing I want is to be sitting in my rocking chair when I’m in my seventies thinking I should have made my own decisions. They’ve really embraced me as an artist, all of my ideas and thoughts, which gives me loads of confidence and was what I needed.

Louis Tomlinson on mental health and music “In terms of One Direction, it’s often easy to stereotype these big evil managers or big evil label heads who demanded that we did this [or that]. It wasn’t really like that, I will say that everyone did their best by us, and I’m talking specifically about our mental health . However, being an artist is very individual and the pressures that you have day-to-day, no manager or record boss understands that. Until you experience it, you don’t understand it. Sometimes words are powerful, it can be a little throwaway phrase that comes from this suited label boss and you think about that for the next couple of months.”

louis tomlinson tour o2

Louis Tomlinson on helping his fans “ In terms of what I think could be better, honestly, there’s too many fucking greedy fuckers.  As artists, we can all do a little bit more to help out, with things like ticket prices, merch prices, everything that we put any kind of price on… Those things are really important to me. I could have had a meet and greet for the seven months I’ve just been on tour, and it would have been amazing fucking money. But the bottom line is, whoever’s got the richest parents or the most money gets a better experience, and that’s not fucking fair.”

Louis Tomlinson on his album collaborators including Courteeners bassist/producer Joe Cross “I definitely had a clear idea of who I wanted to work with, what kind of songs I wanted to make and the direction I wanted to go in. And that meant missing out on any of the moments of treading water and trial and error. When I look down the list of people that have worked on the record, it makes me really proud and especially people like Joe who plays with the Courteeners. I’ve seen loads of Courteeners gigs. Like, that’s fucking dead cool that he’s associated with my record!”

Louis Tomlinson on One Direction “I suppose it’s only a break if we ever get back together! When we had the conversations, we never got any real clarity on what it was. And I can remember going into those meetings and saying, ‘You know, I understand – it’s not what I want – but all I would ask is just put a rough time on how long a break.’ And there was never really an answer. So I definitely came out of the band, crossing my fingers thinking, ‘Oh, maybe it’s only going to be like a year or two.’ That’s also why it took me a long time to get over it because I didn’t really know what it was. I think that’s probably stopped me from going into my solo career because I was still just thinking I wanted to be in that band.”

Louis Tomlinson on Tour

"I like the idea of finally finding my lane and feeling comfortable and confident about what I'm doing," Louis Tomlinson said in a 2019 interview, and seeing him in concert shows that he's traveling at full speed. Wielding the charm and onstage presence that he honed as a member of mega-selling boy band One Direction, the British singer and TV personality puts on a high-energy live show that spans his whole career — all the way back to the days when he auditioned for The X Factor with The Killers' newer-wave smash "Mr. Brightside."

Louis Tomlinson in Concert

Born in 1991 in Doncaster, England, Louis Tomlinson trained as an actor in his early years, and landing the role of Danny Zuko in a school production of Grease gave him enough confidence to try out for the Simon Cowell-helmed British singing competition The X Factor in 2010. He didn't place as a solo singer, but decided to enter with four other contestants as a group that was dubbed One Direction. They came in third during the show's seventh season, but they wound up being first in fans' hearts, creating a Beatlemania-level frenzy as they headlined stadiums around the world, released chart-topping songs and repeatedly broke the internet until they went on hiatus in 2016.

At the end of that year, Tomlinson released his first post-One Direction song, a collaboration with EDM festival floor-filler Steve Aoki called "Just Hold On." In 2017, he collaborated with pop belter Bebe Rexha and British DJ Digital Farm Animals on "Back to You." Later that year, he released two solo singles, "Just Like You" and "Miss You," that were marked by introspective lyrics. In 2018, Tomlinson returned to The X Factor as a judge, mentoring Jamaican-born singer Dalton Harris to victory. He resumed his own musical career in 2019, co-writing Blackbear's "Changes" and releasing three singles in the run-up to the January 2020 release of his first solo album, Walls, and the Louis Tomlinson World Tour in support of it in the spring and summer of 2020.

Reviews 1234

He’s the absolute best.

His concerts are a safe place. You won’t be judged. You’ll be taken care of. He cares so much about his fans and their safety and it shows. I don’t even have to get started on his music cause his discography is full of bangers and hearing them live is just the best thing ever. He also always supports budding talent and introduces so many new bands and artists to his fandom and needless to say, their music is just as good. One can never regret the money that they spend on his shows. It’s money spent well.

Louis loves performing and you can definitely tell.

I’ve been to 3 Louis shows. 1 in his first tour and 2 this tour. The relationship Louis has with his fan base is like no other artist I’ve seen. He truly cares about us and it’s so nice to see that. He lives for the stage. I have watched him grown in such a big way and he truly deserves all of the love and support he gets and more. He deserves more than he gets. He has had to deal with a lot and he still is so nice and kind. I can’t think of a better artist to go see live. He is so talented and even better live. I sounds good but even better live. I think that he should be a wayy bigger artist. I think that people really need to learn about him and give him a chance. I think that everyone should go see Louis at least once in their lifetime. I can’t wait to continue to watch him grow and I hope I get to see him live again. I hope I get the chance to tell him how much he means to me. Anyway everyone should go see him live!!

Louis puts his heart and soul into every show. I’ve never seen an artist connect with his fans the way Louis does with his. His music, charisma, and energy are unmatched. Loved every second of it, can’t wait for the next time he’s in town.

Louis concert was a Smash. 10/10.

Loved the Louis Tomlinson concert from start to finish. Would recommend this to everyone. Took my friend, non- Louis convert who raved about the sound, crowd enthusiasm and interaction. From the lights to the flow of the music. The openers the Snuts are also my fav, so was happy to hear their set as well. Wasn’t a die hard 1D fan but appreciated the few songs that he did that hit the crowd excited. But his cover of 505 …. Chef’s kiss! Cant wait for his next concert. Wish he did festivals in the states.

Louis Tomlinson

Faith in the future world tour 2023.

Make sure you are aware of the house rules

Louis Tomlinson gives another taste of his upcoming album 'Faith In The Future', with the release of ‘Out Of My System’.

Arguably the most adventurous moment on the album, 'Out Of My System' is a punky, in your face song written by Louis with Nicolas Rebscher and Dave Gibson, that will undoubtedly stop you in your tracks when you first hear it.  Listen to the song here .

Also today, Louis announces a huge UK and European arena tour for 2023. The tour will visit Europe from August to November next year including a date at London's O2 Arena.

Louis returned to music with the first single from the album, ‘Bigger Than Me’ last month, the first new song from Louis since the release of his million selling debut solo album 'Walls' in 2020. ‘Bigger Than Me' is an impassioned pop song that has seen plays across Radio 1 and has been playlisted by Radio 2 and Virgin Radio, and head straight into the US Top 40 Radio.

Both tracks are taken from the upcoming album ‘Faith In The Future', released November 11th. Louis has collaborated on the album with celebrated names such as Rob Harvey, Mike Crossey (The 1975, Wolf Alice), Dan Grech (The Killers, The Vaccines, Halsey), Nico Rebscher (Alice Merton), Joe Cross (Courteeners), and Hurts frontman Theo Hutchcraft. Whilst recording the album, Louis had a core aim: to produce a collection of songs befitting an anthemic live show — a task he's risen to with aplomb.

In 2021, Louis was listed in the Guinness Book Of World Records for breaking the record for the most livestreamed concert by a solo male artist. Louis hosted one of the biggest live stream concert events ever held, selling over 160,000 tickets to fans in over 110 countries and raising funds for several important charities and touring crew affected by the pandemic.

Following the huge success of the festival's 2021 debut, August also saw the return of Louis’ highly successful The Away From Home Festival. The one day event was staged this year at the stunning Marenostrum Fuengirola in Malaga Spain, hosting 18,000 fans and selling out in just 24hrs with a line-up of some of the best new British bands.

Jonas Brothers have postponed the upcoming European leg of their world tour, citing unforeseen scheduling conflicts.

The leg was originally due to commence in May but has now been pushed back to 9 September where it’ll kick off at the SSE Arena in Belfast and wrap on 16 October at Tauron Arena in Krakow.

The trio, comprising Nick, Kevin and Joe Jonas, were the first act to be confirmed for the opening season at Manchester’s Co-op Live . The 17 June date has now been rescheduled for 12 September.

In a joint statement, Jonas Brothers did not provide any details about the reason for the cancellation but hinted that some upcoming projects led to the rescheduled dates.

“We have shifted the European dates to later this year and that is only because we have some exciting projects that we are excited to share with you at a later point,” they said in a statement posted on social media.

“Our European fans, we love you and can’t wait to see you. It’s been long overdue and we are so excited to play these shows later this year in the fall. So make sure to hold on to your tickets. We will have more information to come, but we cannot wait to see you. Thank you for all your support over all these years.”

According to the band, all previously purchased tickets will remain valid for the new dates.

Olly Murs reveals ‘intense plan’ to make a mad dash to his baby’s birth while touring

Default author image

Olly Murs

Things really are on the Up for Olly Murs as the singer and his heavily pregnant wife, Amelia, prepare to welcome their first child into the world . Here, Murs, 39, tells us about impending fatherhood, the prospect of turning 40 and hitting the road with Take That.

Just to warn you, I am in a bit of pain. I went paintballing for my brother’s stag do and I’m covered in bruises.

It’s horrible, because the more you scream, the more people hit you.

What were you put through on your stag ?

I went to Croatia , to a place called Hvar. The guys had me wearing all sorts of outfits [including] a stag shirt with different things you had to do as challenges, from getting a girl to put makeup on you, to kissing a bald head. The last one was to drink a pint out of a stranger’s sock… quite disgusting, actually.

You’re about to go on tour with Take That. Did your heart skip a beat when they asked you to join them?

Olly Murs

It was funny because Gary [Barlow] emailed me and said, “Olly, I’ve been told there’s this idea of us going on tour together next year, that you’d come on and be a special guest. Is that true?” I said, “Yeah.” He goes, “But you did an arena tour last year – I’m confused.” I went, “Gary, I would be honoured to be on tour with you guys, I see this as a bucket-list thing.”

They’re such iconic artists, and a band that I grew up listening to. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with Gary. I’ve been friends with Robbie [Williams] as well, who was obviously part of Take That. Mark [Owen], I did Soccer Aid with a few times, and Howard [Donald] is great, I see him at Manchester United. It just comes at a really good time, perfect to be a part of it.

Do you have a favourite Take That song?

When I did X Factor in 2009, I waited at the O2 all day… got in front of the guy, the producer, and he asked me, “What song are you going to sing?” I said, “Paolo Nutini’s New Shoes.” He went, “If I have to hear Paolo’s New Shoes, Kings of Leon, or Bridge Over f***ing Troubled Water again, I’m going to lose my head. Can you sing another song?”

I sung [Stevie Wonder’s] Superstition, got a yes. When I finished, he said, “Look, piece of advice, in your next audition [in front of the judges], sing that song and a Take That song, and you’ll be fine.” So, I did a song called Up All Night, that was my backup… I’ve never told anyone that before.

Take That's Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen on stage

What is the most memorable thing that’s happened to you on the road?

When I toured America with One Direction. That is probably something that I’ll never experience again. We had thousands of fans following buses, running down the street after cars, and then realising it was me and not Niall Horan [laughs]. You got girls going through garbage trucks, bins at hotels, and we had top-end security at every hotel we went to… we’re turning up at Universal Studios, Florida, and it’s all closed down, just for me and 1D to go round and use the rides. That level of madness. Even I felt like an international superstar for five minutes.

Congratulations on soon becoming a dad . In terms of the logistics of touring, I’m assuming you have a plan of action for when the baby is born…

There’s quite an intense plan in place, which has been a stress, I think, for my tour manager and management team. What will be, will be… when it comes, it comes, whether it’s in the middle of a show, or not. We planned this tour way before the baby was a thought, so now’s it’s here, it’s happening. You know in Home Alone, when they’re running through the airport, that music, that

chaos? That is me. That’s what I’ll be like, heading back from wherever in the country to the birth of my baby.

What are you looking forward to about being a father? Anything you’re not prepared for?

That, at some point, your child is going to hate you. That scares me a bit. But also, I understand that, because at some point there’s times when I hated my parents. Not hate as in a real dark kinda hate. It’s more, you have to be the bad guy sometimes… trying to be a dad and a best friend, if I can find that balance, that will be great.

Olly Murs with wife Amelia showing her baby bump

It’ll be when they’re going through their (ahem) Troublemaker phase… will you be going down the celebrity baby name route, with something inspired by fruit or vegetables? No one’s christened their kid Broccoli yet, so that’s up for grabs.

[Laughs]. Well, listen, me and Amelia love our greens, so that’s possible! No, we’ve not gone down that route… we’ve really thought about, you know, from nicknames, to what they might be called at school, and what they might think at 18, 19, 20. We’ve got some really beautiful, amazing names. You’ll have to wait and see.

What are your music plans? Can we expect a follow-up to your 2022 album Marry Me in the foreseeable future?

Now, the most important thing in my life is Amelia, who’s pregnant, and the second most important thing is that the baby comes safe, and then after that being a dad… I love the music and I’ll continue to do it, but when I’m doing an album, I need to be in it. At the moment, I’d say I’m not really in it. For example, if I just turn this camera round [turns the camera to show a baby’s cot], that’s what I’m in: cots. That’s what we’re up to these days.

You also turn 40 next month (May 14). How do you feel about growing older? I’m 38 and I’ve started investing in all the retinols to hold back Father Time.

I mean, 40, 40s, you start seeing things. The grey hairs start to come through, your nostril hairs, ear hairs… you’re having to trim areas of your body you didn’t think you’d have to [laughs]. Them sort of things are a bit worrying, but I’m embracing it. I’ve always – the last three or four years – put my body first, my health first, training well, eating well… you reap the benefits of that.

Olly Murs performing

Can you remember a standout encounter you’ve had with a fan?

I’ve had so many beautiful moments. Some really sad moments as well. I was with a woman recently, her son [died by] suicide. We were at a retreat in Essex, and this lovely lady came in and sat with me in a sauna…

I said, “What brings you here?” She said, “Oh, I’m here because my son [died by] suicide a few years ago. I’m just here to sort of rebuild me life.” We just had a chat about suicide and chatted about people that we’d lost.

Obviously, I spoke about Caroline [Flack], and what I went through, my own personal experience… I don’t know how she felt, but it was like she needed to talk to me, and I said to her, “The most important thing is that you talk about it, the fact that me and you, two strangers that met today in a [sauna], pretty much in our swim gear, sweating” – it was one of them really funny conversations where at the end we were laughing, “We need to get out,” because we were both absolutely [dripping with] sweat!
