10/10 My partner and I are seasoned travellers and usually plan our own holidays. However both of us had extremely hectic schedules in the back end of 2023 and so we went outside of our comfort zone and booked an entire 2 week island hopping tour of the Philippines through Guide To The Philippines (GTTP)! I have to say at first it was pretty daunting, handing over our precious holiday to someone else, but we are SO GLAD WE DID!! This is a team of passionate professionals who did absolutely everything they could to ensure we had a fantastic holiday! The tour itself was incredible, we did the 12-Day Puerto Princesa, El Nido, Coron, Cebu & Siargao Island Hopping Philippine Tour Package experience; possibly a bit too hectic, as we also bolted on all of the additional extras, but that was more us, biting off more than we could chew and in hindsight we don’t regret a thing! I am going out of my way to especially say that you are in very safe hands with the GTTP team! Here is what I experienced: 1. Excellent communication - the team write better English than most native speakers. I never had a language barrier. 2. Efficient - emails were responded to quickly and left no stone unturned, so no constant back and forth 3. Professional - always maintained professionalism, despite I was high maintenance from time to time and they may have wanted to kill me at times (lol) 4. 24/7 - I had support around the clock via email, WhatsApp and iMessage 5. Account Management - not sure if it’s intentional, however we seemed to have one particular agent who took care of most things, like she was assigned to us. Her name was Richel and she is just incredible! You are in fantastic hands if Richel is on your side!!! That said, if Richel was away, the other team members took great care of us also 6. Caring - I felt like I was being taken care of and they were always one step ahead and it filled me with confidence and joy to know they had my best interests at heart. 7. Good Value - Whilst on the tour you get an idea of pricing for each component and given the level of service we received this was incredible value We chose the comfort accommodation package and with the exception of one, the hotels were incredible! We provided feedback to GTTP about the hotel that wasn’t great, and they are looking into it. GTTP literally took care of every single component of our tour. We had daily emails explaining the itinerary for the day ahead with contact details for the tour providers and transport providers. All of our internal flights were organised perfectly. You will be very well taken care of if you choose to book a trip in the Philippines with GTTP. I have not been incentivised or pressured to write this review. It’s just so great to have an exceptional customer experience like my partner and I have had in the lead up and during our holiday! Overall, this package is worth the price. Although, we had issues initially with gttp regarding the dates that we booked vs the availability of flights and the room type in Himaya. It still highly recommended to book with gttp since the flight and accomdation is already included in their package. We also had free island hopping tour which we enjoyed a lot. For the accomodation, you want to stay in a place that will disconnect you to the world for a bit, stay in Himaya. However, if you are going to need strong internet, we can't recommed the place. Aesthetic-wise, Himaya is a beauty and the staff are friendly and helpful. Also, it's a bit far from the main road where all the party happens at night ;)

DIY Travel Guide: Our 5-Day Mindanao Adventure

Our Mindanao Adventure this June 2017 was one of the most exciting and memorable trips that I’ve had. For just 5 days, my two friends and I were able to visit Butuan City, Surigao City, Siargao Island, Socorro, Hinatuan, Bislig, and Davao.

A month before our trip to Mindanao, there was a siege in Marawi City which has led to the declaration of Martial Law across Mindanao. Hearing about the Marawi Crisis made us a bit hesitant to push through our adventure (70% sure and 30% unsure) . Our family also advised us just to rebook our travel to some other time until the siege was over. As lakwatseras / travelers, we really didn’t want to cancel our trip. So to make sure that it’s safe to go to Mindanao, we researched the distance of Marawi City from Butuan City on Google Maps. Then, we found out that the travel time from Marawi to Butuan is about 6 to 7hours. (It’s really far). We also asked some members of DIY Travel Group about the situation in Surigao and Davao. Most of them said that it’s still safe to go there but just expect more military checkpoints in different parts of Mindanao. With these good reasons, we decided to push through our trip. 🙂

Our Experience Visiting Mindanao Under Martial Law

During our stay in Mindanao particularly in Surigao and Davao, I had observed that it’s just like a regular day (business as usual) and locals are not afraid of Martial Law. Actually, when I asked one of our tour guides in Surigao, he told me that they are in favor of the implementation of Martial Law. For them, they feel safer and more protected with Martial Law since there are military conducting checkpoints, which they believed was the key in preventing Marawi crisis from spilling to other nearby areas like Iligan and Cagayan de Oro.

What to Do During Checkpoints: Be sure to prepare your valid IDs and inform the military about the purpose of your stay in Mindanao. Some checkpoints in Davao require bag inspection which I think is good for the safety and security of everyone. Don’t be afraid of the military. They are good. I can say that it’s different from the Martial Law implemented before.

DIY Budget Travel Guide to Mindanao: Detailed Itinerary + Travel Expenses:

Day 1:  butuan> surigao city > siargao island.

• 6:45am – Arrived at Butuan City (Bancasi Airport)
• 7:00am – Rode a van going to Surigao Bus & Jeepney Terminal (Php 200 per head)
• 9:50am – Arrived at Surigao Bus & Jeepney Terminal
• 10:15am – Rode a multi-cab going to Surigao City Port & Ferry Terminal (Php 10 per head)
• 10:30am – Took our Lunch. There are carinderias in front of Surigao City Port
• 11:30am – Rode a FastCraft going to Dapa Ferry Terminal in Siargao (Php 220 per head plus Php10 for Environmental Fee)
• 1:30pm – Arrived at Dapa Ferry Terminal
• 2:00pm – Rode a tricycle going to Cloud 9 Siargao Resort (Php 300 / good for 3 persons)

Note: For our Sohoton Cove + Bucas Grande Island + Jelly Fish Sanctuary + Siargao Islands tour, we paid Php 4000 / good for 5 persons. Thanks to Kuya Nano, one of the surfing instructors in Cloud 9 Siargao, who helped us find additional joiners in our Sohoton Cove Tour and Siargao Island Hopping Tour. That’s how we met our new travel friends, Bonnie and Rai, who came from Cebu City.  So we only paid Php 800 per head for the whole-day island hopping. Day 3: Siargao Island >Surigao City > Britania Island

• 4:00am – ETD Kesa Cloud 9 Resort / Rode a tricyce going to Dapa Port and Ferry Terminal (Php 300 / good for 3 persons)
• 4:30am – Arrived at Dapa Port and Ferry Terminal / Breakfast
• 5:30am – ETD Dapa Port and Ferry Terminal (Php 220 per head plus Php10 for Environmental Fee)
• 7:30am – Arrived at Surigao City Port and Ferry Terminal / Rode a tricycle going to Surigao Terminal (Php 200 / good for 3 persons)
• 8:00am – Start of Surigao City Tour (I Love Surigao Sign, Surigao City Hall, San Nicolas de Tolentino Cathedral, Luneta Park and Rizal Statue)
• 9:30am – Arrived at Surigao Jeepney and Bus Terminal
• 10:30am – Rode a van going to Tandag, Surigao del Sur. We’re lucky that time because the driver of the van (Kuya Manuel) was also on his way to Britania Island. He dropped us at Britania Junction in Salvacion, San Agustin. We only paid Php 320 per head .
• 3:30pm – Arrived at Salvacion, San Agustin. Then rode a tricycle going to Mac Arthurs Place and met Kuya Richard, the driver of the tricycle. (Php 100 / good for 3 persons)
• 4:00pm – Checked-in at Mac Arthurs Place. This resort was recommended by Kuya Manuel (Php 1500 per night / good for 3 persons)
• 5:00pm – Sunset watching
• 6:30pm – Dinner at Mac Arthurs Place Restaurant

Note: We recommend Kuya Richard (0946-165-2800) if you’re planning to visit Britania. He offered Britania Island Hopping tour for just Php 1200 (4 main islands included). We also contracted him to drive us from Mc Arthurs Place Britania to Barobo (via tricycle) and paid him Php 1000 / good for 3 persons. Then he transferred us to his friend, Kuya Gelbert who was our tour guide in Enchanted River and Tinuy-an Falls. We just rode a motorcycle or habal-habal and paid Kuya Gelbert Php 1000.

For Hinatuan and Bislig Tour in Surigao del Sur, we highly recommend Kuya Gelbert Embang (0948-126-9618). He was so kind, accommodating and friendly during our tour. He also accompanied us going to Bislig terminal after our tour ended. We really enjoyed having a short conversation with him.

Day 4: Britania Island + Hinatuan Enchanted River + Tinuy-an Falls, Bislig

• 6:00am – Free Breakfast at Mac Arthurs Place
• 7:30am – Start of Britania Island Hopping (Naked Island, Hagonoy Island, Buslon Island and Hiyor-Hiyoran Island) – Php 1200 (good for 3 persons)
• 9:30am – End of Island Hopping Tour. Went back to Mac Arthurs Place to get our things.
• 10:15am – Checked-out at Mac Arthurs Place / Rode a tricycle going to Hinatuan – Php 1000 / good for 3 persons
• 11:30am – Arrived at Barobo / Ate Lunch in Carinderia with Kuya
• 12:00pm – We transferred to Habal-Habal and met Kuya Gelbert – Php 1000 / good for 3 persons

Traveller's Guide To Mindanao, Philippines

Majestic and breathtaking – that’s how travelers describe Mindanao’s top nature spots and hidden gems. Being the second largest island group next to Luzon , Mindanao has been dubbed the country’s ‘Land of Promise’ for its untapped, promising natural resources. It has become globally known for being home to the surf capital of the country, a famous highly-urbanized city, and jaw-dropping beaches.

Brief history and culture.

Mindanao is known to have the largest Muslim community and diverse native ethnic groups in the country. Because the area is near to the countries of Malaysia and Indonesia, historical accounts mention that Muslim, Hindu and Buddhism influence were very prominent during the early times of Mindanao because of neighboring migrants. The term ‘ Mindanao ‘ was coined after the largest group which settled in the area – ‘ Maguindanaos.’ While Sultanates were among the first to establish their presence, they were soon converted into Islam because of the Muslim migrants who displaced the non-Muslim natives.

Apart from Muslims, Malaysians and Indonesians, some inhabitants of Mindanao are also of Indian, Arab, or Chinese descent. It won’t be sufficient to pinpoint a prevailing culture because the island is rich in diversity and various origins, temperaments and religions are present. There are remnants of Spanish settlement in the northwestern peninsula, whereas Sultanates are found in the southwestern part, for instance.

While the Visayans ‘ Cebuano language is widely-spoken in Mindanao, there are also dialects spoken in other areas such as Chavacano, Hiligaynon, and Illonggo. There are also ethnic minority groups such as T’boli, Maranao, Bagobo, and Manobo living in the area.

Natural features and climate

Mainly characterized by narrow coastal plains, peninsulas, and faulted mountains, Mindanao has a range of tropical rainforests and great biodiversity. Some of the world’s largest pineapples, bananas, and pomelos are grown here. There are also abundant mineral resources and the area takes pride in its rich variety of fish, corals, and pearls, wherein the finest pearls are found in Sulu City in Mindanao.

“#LimitlessAdventures,” said May Unchuan, regional director of the Department of Tourism (DOT)-Northern Mindanao , when asked of a hashtag to include in our social media posts that would pertain to our upcoming four-day trip. “Limitless Adventures” is Northern Mindanao region’s tourism tag line.

Through the Influencers Program of the Philippine Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) , I joined other travel content creators on a trip aimed at promoting the reopening of local destinations and reviving the industry knocked over by the pandemic. Our team were to go around Bukidnon, the largest province of Northern Mindanao.

“Bukidnon” literally means “mountain dweller.” In the past, the term referred only to the people who lived in the mountains of an area called Malaybalay that formed part of the erstwhile undivided Misamis province. Today, the term indicates both the Province of Bukidnon and an eponymous ethnic group, one of the seven indigenous tribes, that call Bukidnon their home.

Next to Palawan and Isabela, Bukidnon is the country’s third largest province in terms of land area, covering a wide plateau and mountainous borders in the north central part of Mindanao island. Due to its elevation, Bukidnon’s main draw is the panoramic mountain range and its climate akin to Baguio City. However, there is more to Bukidnon than the scenery and the icy breeze.

Dahilayan Adventure Park

In Manolo Fortich town, Dahilayan Adventure Park nestles a thousand meters above sea level, at the foothills of the Kitanglad Mountain Range. For its grove of pines and mountain lodgings, the park is comparable to the City of Pines. In fact, Dahilayan is one of Mindanao’s favorite summer escapes.

The eco-adventure park is home to “Asia’s longest dual zipline” that stretches 840 meters across a rainforest canopy. This breathtaking ride zooms up to 90 kilometers per hour while its couple riders are in Superman position. However, it is not yet the most exhilarating. The park prides itself as “Mindanao’s Favorite Extreme Playground” and by “extreme” they mean the Dropzone, a 120-foot free fall into the surface of a man-made lake. Tandem riders are tied up in a harness, hoisted, then unbuckled and left swinging à la pendulum until it slowly come to a halt.

Dahilayan Forest Park

For a milder thrill, Dahilayan Forest Park, located right beside the Adventure Park, has rides that don’t suspend anyone in midair. They have ATVs, luge, go-karts and bumper boats among others.

Another thrill-inducing spot in Manolo Fortich is KampoJuan whose flagship ride is called anicycle, “Asia’s first-ever sky bike” as KampoJuan professes. The ride entails pedaling across a 300-meter cable suspended over a dizzying gorge, connecting both ends of the craggy ravine where a placid river flows below. It is a heart-stopping nature trip.

KampoJuan is also an eco-heritage resort. Within its forested property, there is a four-story mansion that once stood in Pangasinan for over a century. KampoJuan’s owner purchased the ancestral house, dismantled it, brought it to Bukidnon piece by piece and became the first and only of its kind—a transported house—in Mindanao. The mansion is full to the brim with almost a thousand historical artifacts. It functions as a museum and a tourist lodging that gives its visitors a stay with a patina of the colonial times.

Among the noteworthy pieces on display is the original copy of the first Tagalog translation of Noli Me Tangere. There are only two surviving copies of the translated novel, the National Museum in Manila keeps the other one.

Talaandig Soil Painting Gallery

In Lantapan, the Talaandig Soil Painting Gallery houses a handful of artworks with subjects centered on nature, child and women empowerment and the rich culture of the Talaandig tribe. Visiting the gallery may include a meet-and-greet with Salima Saway, one of the known soil painters whose works had graced international exhibits in recent years. The gallery, where Salima resides and paints, also serves as an art school where Salima ensures that the art using Bukidnon’s rich soil as medium is being passed on to the young generation.

Tagolwanen Women Weavers Association

Another tribal art worth saving is the ikam , Bukidnon’s sacred practice of weaving. Since time immemorial, Bukidnon has produced elaborately designed banig (mats) using sodsod, a type of cogon grass endemic to the region, as the main material. The mats, which the Tagoloanen people (sometimes “Tagolwanen”) traditionally give as a wedding present or as a condolence in funeral ceremonies, are being sold at the TWWA Tagolwanen Handwoven shop in Malaybalay City. The souvenir store is managed by the Tagolwanen Women Weavers Association (TWWA), a social enterprise that saved the vanishing art, helped preserve the Tagoloanen indigenous identity and provided a living to the weavers since its establishment in 2012.

Abbey of the Transfiguration

Far from the concrete jungles of Bukidnon’s capital, situated on a hill in San Jose, Malaybalay City, is the hushed environs of the Abbey of the Transfiguration where the highlight of every visit is an architectural marvel. The monastery’s pyramidal church is a masterpiece of National Artist Leandro Locsin who did not live long enough to see the magnificence of what has become his final piece of work.

The Benedictine monastery also keeps an exhibit of liturgical vestments made from indigenous materials. The vestments are creations of Dom Martin de Jesus Gomez, a sought-after couturier known to the fashion elites of the 1970s as Gang Gomez before he chose to live the monastic life. Gomez authored the award-winning book “Worship and Weave” which highlights this vestment collection.

Aside from the church and museum, the Benedictines cultivate a tract of land that produces Monk’s Blend, a premium coffee brand. Monk’s Blend, available at the Abbey’s gift shop, deserves a spot in everyone’s coffee nook.

Binahon Agroforestry Farm

A guided tour around the 30-year-old Binahon Agroforestry Farm in Lantapan is quite a fun and learning experience. It is interesting to know about the farm’s methods of agricultural production, forestry and biodiversity conservation. To make the farm tour more delightful, Binahon let their guests experience harvesting crops such as cabbages and carrots. Another unique experience, unless you are already on a clean diet, is snacking on the farm’s organic fare.

Philippine Carabao Center at CMU

In Maramag town, within the 3000-hectare estate of Central Mindanao University (CMU), is yet another fun tour on agricultural production. The Philippine Carabao Center at CMU is home to hundreds of Bulgarian Murrah buffalo that are raised for their milk. Aside from learning about the buffalo breed, they let farm visitors try hand milking the carabaos, that is, if they are not yet milked using a machine. At Bukidnon Dairy, the farm’s product outlet, tourists can visit the laboratory where the raw milk is processed into more palatable fresh milk or chocolate milk drink.

Taglucop Strawberry Hills

While many travel-related businesses ran at a loss or completely shut down since the onset of the pandemic, there are some ventures that just started such as the Taglucop Strawberry Hills, a strawberry farm and glamping site in the highlands of Kitaotao. Alongside the ruggedness of nature and chilly Bukidnon weather, Taglucop’s geodesic dome tents that can comfortably fit up to eight people are complete with the convenience of electricity, cushy beds, outdoor Jacuzzi and en suite bathrooms.

Glamping in Taglucop is a total relaxation—a wintry weather throughout the day, bonfire, s’mores and strawberry wine come night time, and a vista of the sea of clouds in the early morn. Just like what The Beatles said in their psychedelic hit “Strawberry Fields Forever”, when in Taglucop Strawberry Hills, there is “nothing to get hung about.”

This is an incomplete list of what to do in Bukidnon. Four days, or even five, as our newfound friends from DOT-Northern Mindanao asserted, are not enough to cover every inch of the landlocked province. But that is Bukidnon’s charm: the seemingly unlimited adventures that are in store for its visitors. Aside from coffee, carabao dairy, banig and strawberry, you will be going home with so much reasons to come back.

Tourism frontliners in Negros Oriental undergo training on Filipino brand of service excellence

VALENCIA, Negros Oriental (PIA) -- Tour guides in Valencia town had the chance to update their skills as the Department of Tourism (DOT) conducted a six-day back-to-back training on community tour guiding and Filipino Brand of Service Excellence (FBSE).

A total of 52 tour guides underwent walking tour coaching to improve their skills as the industry’s frontliners.

DOT, in partnership with the Valencia municipal government, has provided training for tourism workers on tourism reception, tour guiding techniques, and effective communication skills.

The town of Valencia is a first class municipality located in the highlands of Negros Oriental that offers various tourist spots such as Mt. Talinis, waterfalls, and museums, among others. 

Part of the training is a mock tour of the geodiversity of Mt. Talinis, as hiking to the volcano is a popular adventure among visitors. 

“It is our goal to capacitate our tourism industry workers for them to be able to provide quality service leading to customer satisfaction and increase competitiveness of our industry that will subsequently lead to increase in tourism arrivals and receipts,” said Cynthia Monzon of DOT-7. 

DOT also introduced the FBSE program in training to sustain excellence in hospitality and enhance the quality of tourism services.

More confidence 

Maurina Buladola, secretary of the Valencia Eco Guides Association (VEGA), said the training has made her more confident as a worker in the tourism industry. 

“Daghan jud kaayo ang akong nakat-onan niining maong training. Akong na realize nga ang pagka tour guide mahimo pod diay nga profession. Mas confident na ko nga mo guide karon tungod sa bag-ong learnings na akong nakat-unan sama sa proper handling sa mga bisita. Among dakong pasalamat sa facilitators,” said Buladola. 

(I have learned a lot in these training sessions. I realized that tour guiding can be a profession. I am now confident to guide because of my new learnings, like proper handling of visitors. We are grateful to all the facilitators.)

Valencia tourism officer Des Tilos, Jr., said the training is in response to the need to capacitate the tourism frontliners with the right skills and attitude to become “effective stewards of the town’s tourism industry.” 

“The local government of Valencia shares the same vision with that of DOT to capacitate our tourism frontliners in order to level up the kind of service we extend to our visitors,” said Tilos. 

The more satisfied the tourists are, the better it will be for the local economy as more tourists will be coming into the town, he said. 

“This translates to a vibrant tourism industry that creates jobs for the locals,” added Tilos. (JCT/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
