The new Star Trek: The Motion Picture director’s cut is finally coming to Paramount Plus

Check out Kirk, Sulu, and Mr. Spock in 4K

by Ryan Gilliam

Ryan Gilliam

Star Trek: The Motion Picture — the 1979 outing and the first film in the franchise — is coming to Paramount Plus on April 5 (known as First Contact Day in the Star Trek universe) with a new “Director’s Edition.”

For this new version, Paramount Pictures has remastered the film in 4K — an upgrade that even includes recreating the special effects in 4K. The Director’s Edition will eventually come to Blu-ray this September, and appear in theaters via Fathom Events on May 22 and May 25.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture sees the cast of the original series return to the U.S.S. Enterprise to investigate and pursue an alien ship that mysteriously destroyed multiple Klingon vessels. It was one of the top-grossing films in 1979 and earned itself three Oscar nominations, despite being “rushed to theaters” and ultimately earning a lackluster legacy among fans.

  • Who Would Win Week: It’s Spock against Riker in a battle of seconds-in-command

The Director’s Edition was restored by producer David C. Fein and preservationist Mike Matessino, both of whom have previously collaborated with Wise. In addition to the various visual improvements and 4K resolution, it also offers Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos.

“I couldn’t be prouder and more thrilled to have completed the film in 4K,” said Fein. “Paramount offered unprecedented access to the original elements and exceptional support and the results are stunning. Utilizing the latest discoveries and innovations of modern film production, The Director’s Edition delivers so much more today than was previously possible.”

Until its release on Blu-ray and its brief stint in theaters, Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director’s Edition will be exclusive to Paramount Plus.

‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’ gets a 4K remaster for Paramount+

Robert wise’s long-lost ‘directors edition’ will be revived..

The film that kickstarted (and nearly killed) Star Trek’s first second life is going to be remastered, once again. Star Trek.com (via Gizmodo ), says that Paramount has green-lit a “full restoration” of Robert Wise’s 2001 “Director’s Edition” of Star Trek: The Motion Picture . The site says that the project, which will take between six and eight months to finish, will be formatted in 4K, with Dolby Vision HDR and a new Dolby Atmos soundtrack. David C. Fein, Mike Matessino and Daren R. Dochterman, who worked with Wise on the 2001 DVD version, will all return to work on the 4K spruce up.

The Motion Picture ( TMP )’s fraught production meant that the film was barely finished before it premiered, with Wise carrying the print himself to the premiere. Wise had said that the film was “unfinished,” and despite a healthy box office, took a pasting from critics who deemed it to be too slow and talky. At the dawn of the DVD era, Wise, Fein, Matessino and Dochterman collaborated on a re-edit of the film that better showed off Wise’s original vision. This included remastered visual effects and a remastered and re-edited score by Jerry Goldsmith. The effects for the 2001 version were produced by CGI pioneers Foundation Imaging, which was Star Trek’s (then) contractor for all computer generated work.

(After its theatrical run, ABC broadcast a “Special Longer Version” of the film that is notorious for including extra scenes with clearly unfinished effects. The most obvious of which is the start of Kirk’s EVA, where the airlock set is surrounded by studio scaffolding , intended to be replaced by a matte painting.)

It was a well-held myth in fan circles that a 4K version of the Director’s Edition was impossible because the CGI assets and film footage had been scanned and edited for standard definition. The bankruptcy of Foundation Imaging, which took place shortly after the film was released, also dashed hopes for any higher-definition re-releases. However, as Memory Alpha lists, producer David C. Fein confirmed in 2017 that the digital material necessary to facilitate a 4K remastering still exists.

Given how TMP’s reputation has been slowly rehabilitated over the last three decades, a 4K version of the film is very welcome. If only because, as well as a smart and interesting vision of the future, the model work and score are so good that they deserve to be seen in the best possible resolution. We can’t wait to experience this in 4K when it arrives at some point between December and next March.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture – 4K Remastered Director’s Cut beams down to Paramount+ on April 5th

After teasing impressive glances of the Star Trek: The Motion Picture: Director’s Cut 4K restoration over the past few months, Paramount has announced the movie will land on the company’s streaming service on April 5th, 2022 .

The extensive restoration, which was announced last July , promises to substantially restore, redo, and/or remaster visual effects from the film’s original negative to a high-definition 4K/HDR presentation, and remaster the movie’s soundtrack with Dolby Atmos audio.

The trailer showcases these improvements, including a before-and-after comparison of V’Ger approaching Earth:

V'Ger from the 2001 DVD release

April 5th is First Contact Day in the Star Trek universe, and as such is celebrated in real life.

To avoid any confusion, know that this release is not an enhancement of the theatrical version of The Motion Picture , but rather an enhancement of the 2001 Director’s Cut of the movie. The Director’s Cut added, trimmed, or removed certain scenes from the 1979 release.

There is no information yet on when this restoration will make it to physical home media but we anticipate the Paramount+ exclusivity to run through the end of 2022. For now, if you are looking for a 4K/HDR version of the theatrical cut of The Motion Picture , check out last year’s excellent Blu-ray release of the first four Star Trek movies.

Streaming on Paramount+ April 5, 2022

1-Month Paramount+ free trial

Paramount+  is offering a 1-month trial  of the service for  free  when you apply coupon code  BETWEEN  at checkout.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture first hit theaters in 1979 and starred The Original Series cast of William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig, along with Grace Lee Whitney, Majel Barret, Persis Khambatta and Stephen Collins.

An important regarding these shots: the Paramount+ caps below were taken from a non-HDR display, which does not present the truest look of the color from the new version of the film for still-frame web display.

We’ll have more “accurate” comparison caps from the new  First Contact transfer from the hopefully in-the-works remastered Blu-ray release of the film, if and when such a Blu-ray is released.

(All “1” caps are from the 2009 Blu-ray; all “2” caps are from the current Paramount+ presentation.)

Star Trek: First Contact will be available on Paramount+ through July 31, after which the film will leave the streaming service (likely due to pre-existing contractual distribution agreements), though we expect it will be back before too long after that.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country are expected to arrive on 4K UHD Blu-ray this fall, though no formal announcement has been made regarding those films. As of this writing, no official news on a 4K disc release of the Next Generation films have been announced — but all good things come to those who wait.

We’ve reached out to Paramount+ for comment on the new transfer of  Star Trek: First Contact , and will update this post with any feedback we receive.

Qonundrum

Vice Admiral

That's the streaming service in general? Or are all Trek shows being remastered in 4K with HDR coding? (Which would be super mega sweet...) So far, no Trek show has been made or remastered in 4K. Maybe DSC season 3 was filmed in it. Otherwise they'd be upscaled. No qualms on HDR as it's useful in its own right and benefit, but just use the bandwidth for higher quality 1080P instead to approach or better blu-ray's. Plus, given how all videotaped material looks jagged and more choppiness due to frames being pulled, I wasn't enamored with DS9 or VOY via streaming quality. TOS and TNG were rather good overall, TBH...

tomswift2002 said: With TOS & TAS they would just need to rescan the original film masters at 4K. Of course the CGI for TOS-R was done at 1080p, so unless they re-rendered everything, then the CGI would just need an upscale to 4K. And TNG—-unless the made film prints of the remastered episodes, those would be 1080p upscales. Also Enterprise was shot on film for the first 3 seasons and then switched to 1080p videotape for Season 4. Also Enterprise’s CGI was created in Seasons 1 & 2 at 480i and then upscales for inclusion in the 1080p masters. Seasons 3 & 4 were done at HD levels (either 720 or 1080). But with streaming, 4K is no better than 1080p Blu-Ray once you factor in compression. Click to expand...
RAMA said: "Originals" in this case means just the new stuff, but its not impossible the old ones might be "uprezzed". TNG was scanned at 2K and not really future-proofed, so yes they'd have to rescan at 4k, but at least much of the work is done. Click to expand...

Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Director's Edition Remastered Trailer

Originally released in 1979, Star Trek: The Motion Picture became the fourth highest grossing movie of the year and earned three Academy Award® nominations for Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, and Best Music, Original Score. The film successfully launched the Star Trek franchise beyond the original television series, despite having been rushed to theaters with incomplete special effects and forced editing choices.

In 2001, director Robert Wise revisited the film to refine the edit and enhance the visual effects. His updated vision was released on DVD in standard definition and embraced by fans but has never been available in higher definition until now.  Meticulously assembled and restored by producer David C. Fein with post-production supervisor Mike Matessino, both of whom originally collaborated with Wise, the film has been prepared for presentation in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision™ high dynamic range (HDR) and a new powerful and immersive Dolby Atmos® soundtrack. Fein and Matessino assembled a team of visual effects experts, led by returning visual effects supervisor Daren R. Dochterman, and utilized the extensive resources in the Paramount Archives to recreate the effects not just in HD, but in Ultra HD. After more than six months of painstaking work, the updated movie looks and sounds better than ever while staying true to Wise’s original intention.

The Enterprise prepares to leave space dock in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

“ The Director’s Edition on 4k Ultra HD delivers an experience that is far more intimate, engaging, and powerful thanks to the hard work of everyone involved,” said Fein.  “In building The Complete Adventure, we appreciated that many people who were first introduced to the film through the full frame release of the ‘Special Longer Version’ have missed it.  I’m excited that it will now be available for the first time in widescreen 4k Ultra HD. After so many years, it’s deeply rewarding to finally deliver Robert Wise’s definitive Director’s Edition for fans to enjoy at home.”

Following is an overview of the new product offerings:

All 10 TOS And TNG Star Trek Movies Returning To Paramount+ In June

star trek remastered paramount plus

| May 25, 2023 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 28 comments so far

Paramount+ is the exclusive home of Star Trek TV in the USA, but since late 2022 the first 10 Star Trek feature films have only been available on HBO Max (now Max). Next month that will change.

Star Trek movies back home on Paramount in June

Paramount+ has announced that the 10 Star Trek movies that exited the streaming service last October will be back starting June 1. This includes the six movies featuring the cast of  Star Trek: The Original Series, including both the theatrical and new 4K edition of the Directors’ Cut of Star Trek: The Motion Picture . Also coming back are the four movies featuring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation .

The full list arriving on June 1:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan Star Trek III: The Search For Spock Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home Star Trek V: The Final Frontier Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country Star Trek Generations Star Trek VIII: First Contact Star Trek: Insurrection Star Trek Nemesis

From Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Max has also confirmed this same set of movies are exiting on May 31, making Paramount+ the exclusive home for the movies, at least in the short term. Paramount+ currently features the three Kelvin-verse movies ( Star Trek 2009, Star Trek Into Darkness , and Star Trek Beyond ). June will mark the first time all thirteen movies have been available on the service at the same time in over a year.

From Star Trek: First Contact

Paramount+ first had the full Trek movie collection back in 2021 . Unlike how Paramount Global has made a point of holding the exclusive streaming rights of Star Trek television shows, both legacy and Paramount Plus originals, they have continued to licence the feature films to other streaming services. Throughout 2022 various Trek films would exit the service for months at a time until the mass move to HBO Max at the end of 2022. It isn’t known if there are any deals in place that will see any Star Trek movies exit Paramount+ again in the coming months or if the streaming service will finally become home to the full franchise, as Disney has done with the Star Wars movies and television series.

First 4 movies coming to Comet

The first 4 Star Trek movies will also be airing on Comet the broadcast and cable sci-fi channel in the USA. They are kicking things off on June 16 with a 32-hour Star Trek marathon of movies and documentaries. They are also giving away T-shirts and there is a costume contest. All 10 TOS And TNG Star Trek Movies Returning To Paramount+ In July

Streaming is convenient for sure, but I’m happy I own the films in physical formats.

I use the streaming if I want to watch random episodes, but I treasure my Trek physical media. The upgraded Blu Ray discs on the 4K film releases even deliver above and beyond the 2009 Blu ray discs.

Any true Star Trek fan should already own physical copies of these.

While I value physical media for myself, I take exception to gatekeeping definitions of what makes a ‘true Star Trek’ fan.

Any true Star Trek fan should not gatekeep the definition of a “true Star Trek fan.”

Was I being ironic or a hypocrite? Sorry either way.

If you don’t value the same format as I do, you’re not only NOT a Star Trek Fan, you are a TERRIBLE human being. You need to have the incredibly inconvenient, space filling, easily damaged discs to watch MY shows the way I want you to.

With what money and what space

I’m happy having all trek I want on disc because of the noticeable better quality. The only downside is that the TNG episodes on the blu ray discs (for example S4E3, S5E22, S6E4) are NOT the fixed versions! The streaming versions are fixed.

What were the issues with those episodes on the discs?

S4E3 the blue alert is red in one scene, S5E22 you can see the blue screen in the ten forward windows when troi and the girl leaving ten forward (2 times, also a few sec later when they passing the second doors) S6E4 you see a starfield INSIDE of the dyson sphere next to the sun…

I think these a minor issues. What is a bit annoying is that sometimes double-episodes are distributed on differect discs. Also a minor issue, but it would be nice to have them on one disc as single-episodes in movie length. Remember the TNG-movie-DVD-Box? (Yes, that box, which started to dissolve…) It would be nice to have it on blu-ray as part of the series box, not separately.

Yes, I want all 2-parter in feature length presentation as well since very long now!!

I’m intrigued to hear more about the dissolving box now, please :)

In an ideal world, if a specific studio has a streaming service, people would be able to expect that it would be the forever home of that studio’s libraries and original content. With stuff like this where the studio’s catalog movies are very transient, and Disney and Warner now removing their own new content produced specifically for their services, it really makes the whole streaming thing a bummer. We’ll see how long all these services all last, but when you are both removing content and increasing prices it isn’t a great combo.

I’m looking forward to picking up the remastered UHDs sometime this year to own the best versions of these physically.

Exactly this was kind of the promise of these streaming services that anything owned by that studio would be exclusive to that site. That was part of the appeal to subscribing to know something will always be there.

But you as mentioned, that is turning out not to be the case as the studios have all recognized that idea is actually costing them money in the end when they can’t spread their IPs out to other services and make money that way. But it’s really annoying for people subscribed to these sites. And I notice there are now tons of Paramount+ properties on other services, mainly on Amazon. None of the original shows (ie, made exclusively for the site) has gone anywhere else yet, so far, but a lot of Paramount movies and shows have made it to other places now.

I won’t be shocked though if the classic shows, TOS-ENT, ends up back on other streamers again. I don’t think Paramount+ will ever lose them again, especially since the TV library is what they are focused on and building on, but they probably see how much money they can make putting them back on sites instead of just being exclusive to one.

I don’t think Paramount+ will ever lose them again, especially since the TV library is what they are focused on and building on, but they probably see how much money they can make putting them back on sites instead of just being exclusive to one.

It would be nice to have them ALL HD-remastered.

This news doesn’t affect anyone who owns the physical media.

I own most of the Trek movies on physical media (only missing two). However, if I can easily find it on streaming, I’d rather do that. It’s so convenient!

I don’t find the streaming all that convenient. It’s far more of a hassle to go and select the service then deal with their irritating menus than it is to just grab my disc and pop it in the player. And I get the high quality sound that streaming doesn’t deliver. I find the discs are still superior in every useful way.

I guess you’re right. I only have a basic Blu Ray player and TV speakers, so maybe that’s why it’s basically the same for me.

I hope this means we’ll also get the Director’s Cuts of Star Trek II & VI on P+, as those were on (HBO) Max.

And on the special DVD-Edition 20 years ago…

I slowllly worked my way through the TOS-TNG movies on my Paramount Plus Canada sub all year and I just noticed this month that TOS 1, 3-6 and all 4 TNG movies are gone (I finished TNG Nemesis about a week before Picard S3 hit). Right now it has the Kelvin movies and Wrath of Khan on Paramount Plus Canada. I’m so confused. But right now only got Beyond to go to have a full movie series rewatch but it’s weird that 9 of the movies just evaporated and I can’t find them streaming anywhere else in Canada.

Feels like they did this just for the press. One set of press stories for them being removed & another for them coming baclpk.

I’ve seen them. Even the TNG efforts.

So I realize I’m just spitballing here, but if Paramount+ does decide to let another streaming service have access to Star Trek again, perhaps it should come with a condition. If you want to carry Trek, help fund future shows or remastering efforts for existing Trek.

More realistic I think to come at it from the angle of, “We’ve remastered the SD shows, pay us more for them.”
