Day 6: Cycling Land of the Bear

Sanctuary of Montgarri

After our morning meal, we will make our way to Beret for a guided mountain biking adventure through the bear’s domain. The route spans a leisurely 32km descent, meandering through the breathtaking Pyrenees valley, home to bears and other wildlife. Along the way, you’ll pass by the charming Sanctuary of Montgarri, navigating continuous flat paths amidst stunning and remote alpine landscapes. A pitstop for lunch at a local restaurant awaits us midway, followed by a renewed journey to pedal the final 9km downhill to Esterri d’Àneu.

Upon completing the cycling expedition, we will head back to our accommodation. Consider indulging in a relaxing SPA circuit upon your return to unwind after a day of cycling.

Day 7: Aiguestortes National Park – Romanesque ensemble of Vall de Boi

hike-aiguestortes-national-park-spain-adventure-tour

Following breakfast, we will make our way to Boí Valley for a half-day guided hike in Aigüestortes National Park. We will take a 4×4 transfer to reach the heart of the park. The route will be chosen and adapted based on our physical condition, ensuring an enjoyable experience amidst nature. Explore streams, lakes, and waterfalls along the path around Planell d’Aigüestortes, culminating at Lake Llong. After the hike, a 4×4 vehicle will take us back to Boí in time for lunch at one of the local restaurants.

Later, reconvene with our local guide to discover the Romanesque ensemble of churches and hermitages in Vall de Boí. Visit the renowned Sant Climent of Taüll church, where a video mapping presentation reveals the medieval fresco decorations. Explore the church and gain insight into why this ensemble earned UNESCO World Heritage status.

Day 8: Canyoning and 4×4 to Andorra via the smugglers’ path

Spain Pyrenees canyoning

After enjoying breakfast, we will head out for a canyoning descent. The guide will provide wet suits and technical equipment, so make sure to bring your swimsuits, a towel, sneakers or mountain boots (which will get wet), and a spare pair of shoes for the end of the activity.

The canyoning descent is an introductory level experience. A 30-minute walk will take us to the canyon entrance. Following basic practice instructions, the descent begins at a relaxed pace. It’s a great activity, offering a chance to explore the thrilling world of canyoning and acquire essential skills for future challenges. Slide down waterfalls, leap into crystal clear pools, and navigate through rocks and canyons, immersing yourself in a natural water park carved into the stone of the wilderness.

After the canyoning adventure, we will head to lunch. Take advantage of their changing rooms before indulging in a delightful lunch at their P7S restaurant, renowned as one of the best in the area.

Spain Pyrenees

Next on the agenda is a 4×4 route to Andorra, following the smugglers’ path. From Alins, a waiting 4×4 will transport us to Andorra, the Pyrenean country, tracing the tracks once used by smugglers for illegal border crossings. A stop in the village of Tor provides insights into its intriguing history. Continuing through the Tor valley tracks, the journey concludes in Andorra, where we will stay for the night.

Day 9: Espai Columba – Casa de la Vall

Spain Barcelona Pyrenees Gay Adventure Tour Art

After your morning meal, you’ll be transported to embark on a guided tour starting at Espai Columba—a museum dedicated to Romanesque Art in Andorra. This cultural institution’s mission is to safeguard, preserve, and exhibit the mural paintings of the church of Santa Coloma’s apse, alongside various liturgical artifacts from Andorran churches. It aims to disseminate knowledge about Romanesque paintings in Andorra, encompassing their architectural context and other artistic expressions within the divine universe they once adorned.

Following this, your second destination is Casa de la Vall, the former parliament of Andorra, providing insights into the country’s history. Subsequently, a brief stroll will lead you to the town center of Andorra la Vella, where you’ll have leisure time to explore its renowned shopping district (lunch not included).

Later, we will head back to Barcelona. You will have time to relax and freshen up before meeting up for dinner this evening. Savor traditional Mediterranean cuisine infused with contemporary ideas and techniques, enhancing timeless recipes.

Day 10: Bouquet D’Alella Winery – Visit Sagrada Familia

Following breakfast, we will transfer to Alella, a town just 30 minutes from Barcelona, renowned for its Denomination of Origin wines. Alella is the smallest wine region in Catalonia and is particularly close to Barcelona. The distinctive sauló soil imparts unique qualities to the wines, with its excellent drainage allowing vine roots to grow deep, resulting in a high mineral content. Notably, the region is known for its white wines made from the local Pansa Blanca variety, a variant of Xarel·lo.

Our journey continues with a visit to Bouquet d’Alella, a winery nestled in a 15th-century farmhouse surrounded by vineyards, offering picturesque views of Alella and the Mediterranean Sea. This idyllic setting provides an opportunity to connect with nature and partake in an unforgettable experience. The tour includes exploring the vineyards and winery to gain insights into the wine-making process, culminating in a delightful wine-tasting featuring some of their finest ecological wines.

Following the winery visit, a delightful lunch awaits us at a local restaurant in Alella.

Eixample Barcelona Spain Sagrada Familia Gay Adventure Tour

Next, we will enjoy a visit to the Sagrada Família once returning to Barcelona. This iconic monument captivates visitors with its harmonious blend of light, relief, color, and spirituality. Antoni Gaudí’s meticulous attention to detail is evident in every aspect, from sculptures to the cathedral’s shape and height, creating a truly awe-inspiring experience.

Our Farewell Dinner is this evening. Experience a delightful tapas adventure as our guide leads us through the vibrant Gràcia quarter, one of Barcelona’s most beloved neighborhoods. Gràcia, known for its artistic community and bohemian atmosphere, boasts a diverse population and a plethora of international dining options. Explore the renowned Plaça de Sol, a bustling square filled with charming café terraces that transform into a popular nightlife destination. Despite its modern vibe, Gràcia maintains a touch of tradition, hosting a sizable elderly population. Be it hiking across the glaciers in Iceland or a naked cruise in Indonesia, we thought we’d highlight some of the best gay tours around the world you should consider joining.

A gay group tour is a great option for an amazing travel experience that’s already pre-planned and purchased as a package. It’s particularly useful if you’re too busy to plan your own trip or if you’re a gay solo traveler because you’ll quickly make new friends in your group as you travel together. Of course, you can also travel with a friend, significant other, or even a family member on one of these awesome adventures. We recommend a few different tour operators that do gay group trips, and they all offer great itineraries and experiences that you’ll surely love and won’t forget.

Europe is without a doubt one of the most amazing, dynamic, and gay-friendly places in the world to visit. You could spend years or decades traveling across Europe and still not see it all. Latin America and Asia also have some amazing destinations to visit, and you can find plenty of gay group tours in those regions as well.

Gay Barcelona Tour

Hosted by: Two Bad Tourists , yep that’s us!

Spain is an amazing destination, and it's one of the most progressive places in the world for the LGBTQ+ community. We've partnered with The Queer Travel, who helped assemble the itinerary and will manage the reservations as well as all the on-the-ground logistics. This will be an awesome gay group trip, so you can come with a friend, that special someone, or even come alone. In fact, many guests on our hosted trips are solo travelers, so you won't be alone, and you can make new friends while we explore together. Spain is famous around the world for its cultural traditions, great beaches, history, and welcoming atmosphere. As the third country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage back in 2005, it’s no surprise that Spain is welcoming to the LGBTQ+ community. Once more in 2025, we'll be your hosts on this incredible trip to Barcelona and Sitges, where you can tickle your imagination with images of flamenco dancers in the night, sounds of wine glasses clashing amongst Spanish banter, infinite tapas landing on your table, and the sea breeze lightly brushing your skin as the water crashes onto the coast. We'll even be staying at Axel Hotel Barcelona , the original property of the largest gay hotel chain in the world. The Spaniards live with passion and a thirst for life. Open your heart, mind, and drink it in. Let us show you the magic of this amazing destination.  View Spain Tour →

Gay Madrid Tour

Madrid is perhaps not as well known as a gay destination as its Catalan sister in the northeast, Barcelona. But the truth is that Madrid is a bigger city with more offerings from a nightlife perspective and many LGBTQ+ oriented events throughout the year. There are very few cities in the world that offer the same kind of welcome to LGBTQ+ residents and visitors. Madrid is a fantastic destination, especially if you enjoy local neighborhoods, art, the gay scene, nightlife, and beautiful weather. After exploring the capital city for several days, we'll later head out on day trips to both Toledo and Segovia, which are both just an hour's drive from Madrid. Toledo is a medieval town that was once the capital of Spain before the royal family moved the capital to Madrid in the 1500s. Segovia is another famous town nearby, known for its Roman aqueduct as well as the fairytale-style castle. We'll spend the days exploring these medieval towns through their curving alleyways, cultural museums, and historic monuments. Let us be your hosts as we explore our home city and surrounding towns! Hosted by Detours Travel

South Africa is a country unlike any other in the world. The long colonial history followed by its recent turbulent past of apartheid has shaped the country in many ways, yet has created an opportunity for carving a new future. When looking at the facts, South Africa is really the only country on the African continent that would be considered gay-friendly . While there are still struggles with equality in some parts, like any country, they were globally ahead of the pack, officially legalizing same-sex marriage in 2006. Cape Town is perhaps the most open-minded city, and the vibrant metropolis of Johannesburg has plenty of LGBTQ+ specific venues as well. A gay African safari is also a must during your visit to South Africa, and Detours Travel has packaged all this and more into their popular 12-day trip. View South Africa Tour →

  • Member for a Night at the Soho House Barcelona

One writer gained brief access to the exclusive Soho House location in Barcelona, where hotel guests enjoy complete access until privileges vanish at check-out.

MICHELIN Keys Barcelona Spain Hotels

gay tour guides barcelona

I am not a member of the Soho House Barcelona . I am not a member of any Soho House around the world. And yet, here I am — about to saunter through the front doors without a second glance. It's been almost exactly 30 years since the first Soho House opened in London. Since then, the trendy, members-only institution has expanded to some 45 properties around the world. Time has not diminished its reputation, nor its exclusivity. In 2024, over 100,000 hopefuls remain on the waitlist to join worldwide. If you manage to meet the club’s qualifications, outlast the waitlist, and impress the selection committee, you’ll pay a few thousand dollars a year for full membership. But there’s a secret entryway. At Soho Houses around the world, a hotel component has been added to the roster. Pay for a night, and you’re as good as a member. In Barcelona for a day, I decide to see just what it’s like. I'll admit just a touch of trepidation.

At check out, my privileges vanish like Cinderella’s carriage.

gay tour guides barcelona

This account is written strictly from memory. Among the Soho House rules is a ban on any video, photography, tablets, or PCs, with only a few exceptions. But even without a phone full of photos, the location just outside of the historic Barrio Gotico neighborhood (facing the Marina Port Vell at the corner of the Duc de Medinaceli Square) is impossible to forget. Walk inside and the house style washes over you, a bohemian aesthetic inside an 18th century building stocked with Catalan bricks and opulent ceramics.

But with the clock ticking down on my membership, I don't have time to stare.

I would typically take this time to read the morning paper and munch a tostada, but at Soho Club, it becomes apparent, the morning is for the gym. Already, it’s the teeming site of runners, cyclers, and weight lifters: a collection of people who have seemingly never even heard of tostadas.

Before I’m guilted into the treadmill, I head to the basement for a look at the large indoor pool, lined with tiles in the style of Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner (whose work can be found at the historic Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site ). The Cowshed Spa has the feel of a 1930s barber shop, and a nearby staff member cheerfully explains that the name dates back to 1995 and the second Soho House ever founded. In that Georgian manor house in Somerset, the first Soho House spa was born — set in the manor’s old stable. This one’s a more exclusive stable than I’ve ever seen in my life, and I’m tempted to book the “Pre-Party Workout,” a facial exercise that promises to restore the radiance of the skin. I have no party planned tonight, though, so I bid the spa adieu and continue my journey into the Soho world. The Club is the beating heart of every Soho House around the world, and I grasp the energy of this place immediately. This is not the spot to read a book. This is no ashram. This is an elegant, yet informal, club in which to designers, stylists, architects, and artists sip Soho Mules and pop olives. If you’re hoping to jump into a conversation, make sure to have an anecdote outside the world of finance. One qualification of Soho House membership: employment in a field of creativity or art. A few floors up is the spectacular rooftop terrace, among the most beautiful in the city, with its own bar/restaurant and a nicely sized pool. I stop here myself for an avocado toast with a view, and struggle not to sneak my phone for a photograph.

Rooms are named by size — here's a Large

At last, I head to my accommodation, one of the unabashedly named Tiny Rooms. At 21 square meters, it’s enough to fall in love. A charming space in shades of ochre, black, brown, and deep green, the old-fashioned atmosphere is peppered with the modern comforts (bedside bluetooth speakers and usb plugs) you expect from the brand. The bathroom is lined with two-toned ceramics and equipped with a courtesy set the likes of which I’ve never seen, bursting with creams, serums, and shampoos. My view is an ordinary side street, but I hardly mind. If I get the urge for breathtaking views, I'll head back to the terrace. I’m writing this very article when a knock at the door calls me back, followed by the lively call to “cocktail service!” Behind the door, a mixologist accompanied by a bar cart offers me a welcome drink of choice. With the prospect of another hour to write this piece, I ask for something light and receive a house caipirinha. Those who aren’t spending their holidays at a writing desk don’t need to fret — you can summon a bartender at your convenience, any time between 7 and 9:30 pm, to mix you a room side aperitif. It’s a great perk — and as I sip the caipirinha, I reflect on the Soho. Most likely, I’m not quite the target member: the artsy, well-to-do, elegant creative. And yet, even for me, the Soho House Barcelona is truly a special place. The amenities are a resounding enticement, the room a thoughtful refuge, and the public spaces among the most sparkling in the city. The view from the terrace, alone, is worth the price of admission. And no one will force you to use the gym. ▪

In Counterculture San Francisco, a Church Has Become the Place to Be

Yoga, laser art and Bobby McFerrin are attracting residents who are longing for a community — but not necessarily religion.

WHY WE’RE HERE

We’re exploring how America defines itself one place at a time. In San Francisco, a city that loves the new, many residents are flocking to an old cathedral.

Heather Knight

By Heather Knight

Reporting from Grace Cathedral in San Francisco

San Francisco residents have always celebrated the new, the innovative, the cutting-edge. The weirder, the better. But these days, they are flocking to a surprising venue for the cool factor: a church that is older than the city itself.

High atop Nob Hill, above the clanging cable cars and luxury hotels, stands the majestic Grace Cathedral . The Episcopal congregation dates back to 1849, the year before the city was incorporated, when pews were filled with miners tossing gold dust into the offering plates at a precursor to the current building.

The Gothic cathedral, built in 1927 for the same congregation, has for decades been home to traditional religious rites and events: Sunday services, baptisms, weddings, funerals and Christmas choral performances. But in the past few years, it has boomed for reasons that have nothing to do with the Bible. Just the other week, a public art display featuring colorful lasers beamed from the roof of the nearby Fairmont Hotel into the big, round window at the front of the cathedral. The event drew more than 1,000 onlookers, including Sergey Brin, the billionaire co-founder of Google, and Kudra Kalema, a Ugandan prince and tech founder.

Kanye West, the rapper, has visited the cathedral during quiet hours to play the organ. Bobby McFerrin, the singer made famous by his 1988 hit, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” regularly leads cathedral goers in improvised song circles.

But it’s not just star power fueling the interest in Grace. In a city where office buildings remain among the emptiest in the nation, many remote workers in San Francisco are longing for a real-world community.

Two years ago, the San Francisco cathedral created Grace Arts, a program designed like a museum membership that charges an annual fee in exchange for benefits that include discounts on classes and events.

It has proven so popular that Grace Arts members now outnumber regular church members. About 820 households subscribe to Grace Arts, compared with 550 churchgoing households. Annual surveys show the average age of a Grace participant has dropped from 63 to 40 in just two years, signaling the new program is drawing a younger crowd.

Kimberly Porter-Leite volunteers at the cathedral’s twice-weekly yoga classes, sessions so popular she has to perform what she calls “mat Tetris” to ensure everybody fits between the columns and pews. The fire department has even required the cathedral to block off an open path with colorful cones so that the yogis can get out in an emergency, she said.

Ms. Porter-Leite, wearing black leggings and heart socks at a recent session, said she felt incredibly lonely during the pandemic, a hole made worse by the death of her mother.

She is not religious and is married to a woman she described as “a recovering Catholic” who felt mistreated by the church for being a lesbian. A cathedral was an unlikely place for her to spend her time, but she lives nearby and knew that Grace had a reputation for being liberal and welcoming. In 2021, she tried out a yoga class and was hooked.

“This place was a lifeline for me,” she said. “It is so weird and quirky and lovely and inclusive. It was such a relief.”

Darren Main has taught yoga classes at the cathedral for many years but said they used to be small and only recently have swelled. He, too, is gay and felt shamed by the Catholic church in which he was raised.

“A lot of people here left the church, not feeling particularly welcome or safe,” he said. “But we still need a space where we can be together for some reason besides bickering about politics.”

Others are finding community and joy at the cathedral by packing monthly sound baths, where they nestle into their sleeping bags to listen to musicians play by candlelight. They are dancing in the pews at tribute concerts to Sting, Queen — and, of course, Taylor Swift.

They are joining tours that allow them to venture into nooks of the cathedral that were long barred to visitors — including the closets where the bishop’s vestments are kept, the bell tower and the catwalks overlooking large stained glass windows featuring biblical scenes in vibrant colors. In some areas, the clearance is so low, visitors must don hard hats.

The cathedral has even hosted carnivals, drag queens and trapeze artists swinging from its soaring ceilings.

“Crazy San Francisco! Isn’t it great?” joked the Very Rev. Malcolm Clemens Young, the dean of Grace Cathedral, who regularly ditches his collar for a T-shirt and shorts at yoga class.

The groundswell of interest may seem unlikely in a city known for its counterculture and where organized religion is not a focus of many residents’ lives — except on Easter Sunday when they pack the hills of Dolores Park for the annual Hunky Jesus contest. One 2020 study , conducted by the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies, found that 35 percent of San Franciscans were religious adherents, compared with nearly 49 percent nationally.

Mr. Young said he was heartened that people of all religious stripes, as well as those who are agnostic and atheist, were joining the fun at the cathedral.

“We always say you can belong before you believe, or you can belong and never believe,” he said. “There’s such a spiritual hunger. We’re always going to look up at the stars in wonder. And we’re always going to ask why we’re here.”

Of course, the unusual offerings were designed out of self-interest, too.

Grace is just one of many churches around the country that has tried to pay the bills in an era in which fewer people are going to church and tithing every Sunday.

Maintaining the cavernous structure and paying for staff and utilities cost a staggering $17,000 a day. The cathedral relies mostly on large private donations, but its Grace Arts membership fees, as well as charges for one-off classes, tours and concerts help, too. Praying and meditating at the church remain free.

Some churches have had after-lives as cafes, nightclubs or fraternity houses . Housing proponents see an opportunity for congregations with a surplus of land, such as expansive parking lots, to build affordable units alongside their churches, using the slogan YIGBY, “Yes in God’s Backyard.”

Tell Us About Where You Live

Mark Elsdon, a consultant who works with churches on transitioning their properties to other uses and is also an ordained minister, said more and more churches will face these conundrums.

“It’s a wave, a tsunami, and we’re actually just on the beginning of it,” he said. “There just isn’t the need for all that space.”

Mr. Young said he hears from the deans of cathedrals in Washington, D.C., New York City and elsewhere who want ideas on how to draw more people to their buildings, if not to their church services.

“We definitely consult with each other,” he said. “But we are the ones who are pushing the envelope more than they are.”

Or unfurling the yoga mat as the case may be.

On a recent Tuesday evening, Paul Wong performed his weekly routine: arriving early to claim a prized yoga spot on the labyrinth at the center of the cathedral, and stripping off his work clothes to reveal shorts and a T-shirt.

He is a religious agnostic but said he feels at home at Grace.

“It does feel like going to church a little bit, but it’s not pushed on you,” he said. “Whatever worries or stresses I have, it helps me release them.”

He lay down on his back and gazed up at the waning sunlight streaming through the stained glass windows. He took a deep breath. He was at peace.
