Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland (United Kingdom), is known for its iconic Edinburgh Castle perched atop the dormant volcanic cliff of Castle Rock and its beautiful Old Town, home to historic churches, museums, and squares.

Edinburgh attracts millions of tourists each year with its stunning architecture, vibrant cultural scene, and wide range of shopping and dining opportunities.

There are four ports where cruise ships calling to Edinburgh may dock/anchor, and they are all within a 15-40-minute drive from downtown Edinburgh. South Queensferry is the main port for large cruise ships.

In this article, I share practical information on the South Queensferry cruise terminal, getting to Edinburgh from this port, and the 10 best things to do in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Cruise Port at South Queensferry

There are four locations where cruise ships arriving in Edinburgh can dock/anchor:

• South Queensferry – Located 10 miles northwest of Edinburgh city center, S. Queensferry is best known for its picturesque Forth Bridge, a 1.5-mile-long red railway bridge that crosses the Firth of Forth River. The cruise ships anchor in the firth and use tender boats to transfer the passengers to Hawes Pier, from where they can take a shuttle bus to Edinburgh city center.
• Leith – This port is located only 3 miles from Edinburgh and it’s only used for small cruise vessels.
• Newhaven – Cruise ships may also anchor in this harbour located only a 5-minute drive northwest of Leith.
• Rosyth – A port is located 15 miles northwest of Edinburgh, across the Forth Bridge.

South Queensferry is known for its picturesque waterfront, historic buildings, and stunning views of the Forth Bridges. You can reach the town center in a 10-minute walk.

The tender ride takes about 15-20 minutes. Upon arriving at Hawes Pier, you’ll be greeted by the sounds of traditional bagpipes and friendly locals offering free maps and other services.

Getting to Edinburgh from S. Queensferry cruise port

Guests who booked the shore excursions with the cruise ship will meet their tour guides and buses on the right side upon exiting the pier.

On the left side, you’ll see the bus stop for shuttle buses operated by “ Lothian “, a local bus company. Bus X99 runs every 15 minutes and will take you to Edinburgh city center in about 30 minutes’ ride. You can purchase the bus tickets on the pier and the round-trip costs 12£ (price from 2024).

The drop-off point in Edinburgh is on National Cycle Rte 75, within a 5-minute walk from the iconic Scott Monument. Upon returning to the ship, save at least 45 minutes for the bus ride due to the traffic.

Alternative options for getting to Edinburgh from S. Queensferry include the train and taxis. “Dalmeny” train station is located a 10-minute walk from the pier at the top of the hill (110 steps) and trains run twice per hour. The train ride takes 20 minutes and you can check the schedules at the https://www.scotrail.co.uk/ . Hop on Hop off buses may be available in front of the train station.

In Edinburgh, you’ll get off at Waverley Railway Station, located near Princes Street, within a 10-minute walk from the Old Town.

Taxis are also available at Hawes Pier and prices are clearly displayed. The currency in Scotland is the British Pound (GBP). Most places will not accept euros or US dollars, however, credit cards are widely accepted.

If you prefer to book a shore excursion , you can do it through your cruise ship or an independent tour operator. Keep in mind that cruise ship prices can be even up to 3x higher than independent tours’ prices.

From the shuttle bus drop-off point near the Scott Monument, you can easily walk to the city’s main attractions and the iconic Edinburgh Castle. Here’s the list of the best things to do in this incredible city!

1. Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, perched atop Castle Rock and offering stunning views of the city. Steeped in history, this ancient 11th-century fortress served as a royal residence, a military stronghold, and a prison throughout history. Nowadays, it is a world-famous tourist attraction and the second-most-visited castle in the United Kingdom.

The castle dominates Edinburgh’s city center and takes at least a half-day to visit. Visitors can explore the Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny, and the National War Museum within its walls.

The castle is open daily and guided tours are offered. It’s highly recommended to book the tickets in advance, as they sell out far in advance, especially in the summer months.

When visiting the castle, remember to wear comfortable shoes, as there are plenty of steps and uneven surfaces to navigate.

2. The Royal Mile

The Royal Mile is Edinburgh’s historic heart, stretching from the majestic Edinburgh Castle down to the impressive Palace of Holyroodhouse. This historic, cobbled street is packed with history, culture, and a variety of attractions and landmarks such as St Giles’ Cathedral, the Real Mary King’s Close, and the Scottish Parliament.

It’s a great place to soak up the atmosphere, browse unique shops, and sample local cuisine at the many pubs and restaurants. The Royal Mile is best explored on foot, so wear comfortable shoes and take your time to enjoy everything it has to offer.

3. St Giles’ Cathedral

Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, the 12th-century St Giles’ Cathedral is a stunning medieval church located on the Royal Mile. With its striking crown steeple, the cathedral has been a focal point of worship for over 900 years and played a significant role in Scotland’s religious history.

Inside, you can admire beautiful stained glass windows, intricate stonework, and the Thistle Chapel, which honors the Order of the Thistle, Scotland’s highest order of chivalry. This is a  fully guided tour of Edinburgh with a Qualified Blue Badge Guide . Visit the mysterious Rosslyn Chapel, then enjoy a panoramic tour of Edinburgh's Old and New towns, a  private walking tour of Edinburgh Castle  followed by an optional walking tour of historic Edinburgh.

When arriving off the tender look for your Edinburgh Tourist Guide holding a  Go Scotland Tours sign . Take a moment to taken the amazing engineering of the  Forth Bridges , including the rail bridge which is a UNESCO sight. From Queensferry we take a 45min drive outside the city to  Rosslyn Chapel . This is an amazing piece of stone architecture from the Renaissance times that is full of mystery, myth and Templar Knights stories. It has become most famous for being included in the Dan Brown novel, the  Da Vinci Code .

After we visit Rosslyn Chapel and hear the history talk we will make our way into  Edinburgh . We then take a drive through Edinburgh's Royal Park,  Holyrood Park . Here you can see views from the city's tallest hill,  Arthur's Seat  (*Please note this is not guaranteed as the High Road is sometimes closed). If time permits we will make a short photo stop at  Holyrood Palace  (*note this is not an interior visit). This was home to  Mary Queen of Scots who lead quite a dramatic life. The current Royal Family stay here whenever in town and the Queen holds her garden party here every summer.

Then we make our way up the historic Royal Mile to  Edinburgh Castle . Here you will enjoy a  personal guided walking  tour of the castle. Hear the stories of how the castle has been built throughout the centuries. From the esplanade we head up through original iron (yett) gate to see the  one o'clock gun . Then up  St Margaret's Chapel  and the famous medieval cannon called  Mons Megg . Ending in the Crown Square where you will have free time to check out the  Crown Jewels  and  Stone of Destiny .

In the afternoon you will have the option to continue your walking tour through some of  Edinburgh's famous closes . We will then explore  Greyfriar's Kirkyard , a fascinating Victorian Cemetery with many stories like the famous Hero Dog  Bobby , the Poltergeist Mackenzie and many connections to  Harry Potter . Alternatively you can skip the  walking tour  for more time to shop on the  Royal Mile .

Before heading back to the ship we will take a short tour through the  New Town . A panoramic tour through the Georgian streets built up during the  Scottish Enlightenment .

Explore parts of Edinburgh that are often overlooked but shouldn’t be, as these revitalized areas have become thriving destinations.

After departing from the pier, you will soon reach Dean Village, a historical area of Edinburgh where grains were milled for 800 years. Once a separate village where many mill workers lived, it still seems vastly different from busier Edinburgh.

Highlights include a 19th-century residential building for the mill workers known as Well Court and Dean Bridge, which spans the Water of Leith. Thomas Telford, the engineer behind the ingenious Caledonian Canal, designed the bridge. While meandering about, you might also see decorative mill stones and stone plaques with carvings of baked breads and pies, a nod to the grains used to make them.

Continuing on, you will next explore Stockbridge, a village on the north edge of Edinburgh that is wonderfully bohemian and artsy. Landmarks include the Roman temple-inspired St. Bernard’s Well, whose waters supposedly have medicinal qualities, and the Stockbridge Colonies, a cluster of 19th-century stone homes that is really a village within a village.

A leisurely walk to Leith follows. A port for more than 1,000 years, Leith has been thoughtfully renovated and revitalized, yet its historical character has remained intact. During the guided portion of your visit, you might see what was once the largest swing bridge in the United Kingdom, a 17th-century signal tower that was originally a windmill, and the statue of Roberts Burns. During free time, you can explore even further.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at a downtown venue for a whisky tasting. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society will host the event, in which the whiskies will be served at cask strength. That means the drams will not have been subjected to chill filtration or any other interference that would alter their tastes.

You will be served three drams, a dram being an eighth of a fluid ounce. The tasting will reveal the remarkable variety within the distillation processes and present the complexities that the different oak casks and aging times impart.

Before each dram is sampled, one of the society’s members will describe the whisky’s characteristics. Some whiskies might taste spicy and dry while others may be heavily peated with strong smoky flavors. The experience will be enlightening and entertaining.

Your immersion into the world of bagpipes will be just as fulfilling. Louise Marshall, one of Scotland’s most renowned pipers, will lead your workshop. She has played for Queen Elizabeth II and Pope Benedict XVI, and her instruction will be based on years of experience.

Marshall will teach you basic chanter techniques, show you how bagpipes work and describe the instrument’s history. If you wish to look the part, Scottish attire such as kilts, sporrans and feather bonnets will be available.

Travel to Glamis Castle, a royal residence since 1372, reputed to be the most haunted stately home in Britain. It was the childhood home of the late Queen Mother and birthplace of Princess Margaret. Your tour of the interior shows you many of the rooms open to the public. Walking through the door leading from the dining room to the crypt is to pass in a few seconds from the era of Queen Victoria to the Middle Ages.

The most splendid room in the castle is the drawing room. Together, the rooms present an array of china, paintings, tapestries and furniture spanning five centuries. In the grounds stand a pair of wrought-iron gates made for the Queen Mother on her 80th birthday. Leaving Glamis Castle, you continue via the impressive bridge crossing the River Tay to the town of St. Andrews, international home of golf. During free time here you can browse amongst the many shops specializing in golf memorabilia, have lunch on your own, or walk across the famous 18th green to capture some of the atmosphere of the great matches played here over the years.

A WALK ON THE ROYAL MILE

Walk Edinburgh’s glorious Royal Mile, the medieval thoroughfare that stretches from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The walk will commence at the castle’s esplanade in the shadow of the imposing fortress, the city’s oldest building. While descending the Royal Mile, you will pass a litany of historical buildings such as Gladstone’s Land, the former townhouse of a wealthy merchant that has been restored to its 17th-century splendor. You will also see Lady Stair’s House, a literary museum dedicated to the works of Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson, both of whom were born in Edinburgh. Upon reaching the end of the street, you will enjoy free time, during which you might explore Holyroodhouse, the British monarch’s official residence in Scotland. St. Andrews - a Town Dedicated to Golf

Even from a distance St. Andrews delights the visitor. It’s a town for all seasons and all tastes. Named after Scotland’s patron saint, St. Andrews, it is the home of the world’s oldest golf club, founded in 1754. The Club is the headquarters of world golf and the supreme authority in golfing matters. Crowds from all over the world have gathered round the 18th hole of the famous Old Course, knowing just how much depended on a putt.

You’ll travel along the main route before branching off onto country roads with fine pastoral views heading towards St. Andrews. Upon arrival into St. Andrews Town, you’ll stop at the atmospheric ruins of St. Andrews Cathedral, which are among the most photographed in Scotland. Your tour continues with a panoramic drive-through of St. Andrews seeing the bustling market town, and then enjoying an overview of the layout of the golf courses. You’ll be able to view from the outside, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. You’ll have some free time for a short stroll around areas of the Old Course, or to browse in one of the many small specialist shops selling golf memorabilia and golf clothing.

Leisurely Edinburgh

This is a perfect option to get to know Edinburgh for those who may not be able to negotiate walking and climbing. A narrated drive introduces you to the historic capital of Scotland. You’ll take in the main city sights and get an interesting overview of Edinburgh. Your tour takes you through the Old Town descending eastwards along the ridge from the castle. This is the historical area known as the ‘Royal Mile’ where you drive along Castle Hill, Lawnmarket, High Street and Canongate passing delightful multi-storied houses and quaint side streets. In the area of the old town, you’ll get a flavor of what 16th and 17th century Edinburgh was like – a cramped, impossibly crowded area of tall buildings on either side of the mile of road between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood.

At one end of the Royal Mile you’ll see splendid and regal Holyrood Palace, the official residence of the Queen when she pays official visits to Scotland. Drive to the top of Arthur’s Seat from where you’ll have a marvelous view of Edinburgh Castle standing proudly on its soaring rock. This notable landmark, dominates old town and the entire city. You’ll also drive along Princes Street, flanked by shops and beautiful garden parks as you continue to Georgian New Town where in the late 18th century, prosperous Edinburgh commissioned the finest architects to create a city of classical buildings, tree-lined squares and crescents linked by wide streets that exude elegance and harmony.

Falkirk Wheel, Canal Cruise & Stirling

The highlight of this tour is a visit to one of Scotland’s most impressive feats of engineering – the Falkirk Wheel. The world’s first rotating boatlift links two canals - one 82 feet (25 metres) higher than the other. Sitting in your canal boat on the lower gondola of the wheel, it rotates, carrying some 500 tonnes of boat and water as you gracefully raise to the upper level, counterbalanced by the top gondola coming down. This experience is made all the better with a short cruise along the canal offering stunning views from the top.

Continue to the city of Stirling, known as ‘the brooch that clasps together the highlands and the lowlands’. The lower town is packed with contemporary shopping malls, theatres and art galleries. Enjoy some free time here to look around, so you can browse the high street stores, sip coffee at a sidewalk café or head up to explore the Castle of the Holy Rude.

If you would like to explore Edinburg on your own, this private motorcoach transfer is ideal. You’ll be dropped off in a central location near the Royal Mile, and you’ll have nearly 6 hours to enjoy the city as you please. Your return transfer to the ship departs from the same place as your drop-off. A tour escort will be traveling with you to and from the ship to answer any questions you may have about sightseeing, dining or shopping.

At the designated time, rejoin your motorcoach for the return to the port. Please confirm with your escort the meeting point and time of departure. There is only one timely return transfer and guests who are late would be responsible for expenses incurred to return to the ship.

Port Leith-Edinburgh cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Leith-Edinburgh, Newhaven-Rosyth-Queensferry, Scotland. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Edinburgh's principal cruise port is Port Leith, but some ships may alternatively stop at Newhaven (tender cruise port). Both seaports are located on Firth of Forth's southern shore. Firth of Forth (mainland Scotland) is River Forth's estuary. Aberdeen Harbour is approx 100 mi (160 km) away. Edinburgh is Scotland's capital city. By population (around 0,5 million, metro 1,35 million) it is ranked country's 2nd largest - after Glasgow . Edinburgh is also UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting international and UK tourist with its historic sights, castles, numerous entertainment and activities options, the annual Edinburgh Festival.

Forth Ports (Edinburgh's cruise port operator company) manages a total of 7 UK seaport terminals and anchorages - Leith, Dundee, London-Tilbury , plus the anchorages Rosyth, South Queensferry and Newhaven (England). In 2018, Edinburgh received 114 cruise ship calls with 150,000+ tourists (passengers and crew). In 2019, the number grew to 155,000.

Port Leith (Edinburgh)

Port Leith (locode GBLEI) is to the northeast of Edinburgh City and is within the city's council area. Leith is one of Edinburgh's most profitable enterprises, with annual cargo shipping capacity 1.5+ million tons.

Leith Docks became Edinburgh's port in early-19th-century, when there were built numerous facilities serving the shipbuilding and ship repair industries. During 19th-century, Leith also became a major port serving Scotland's herring export trade.

Currently, Port Leith is Scotland's biggest enclosed (harbor) deepwater port, with capability to handle vessels up to 50,000 DWT (deadweight tons). Port Leith provides easy access to major roads in Scotland, including A1 highway, Edinburgh by-pass, M8 and M9. It offers road and rail connections and is perfectly located for North Sea shipping operations of any kind. Port's busy cruising season is March through October, with roundtrip itineraries offered mainly by large liners operated by Cunard , Princess , MSC , Costa .

In January 2023, the cruiseferry Tallink Victoria I (permanently berthed at Imperial Dock and being chartered by the Scottish government to house Ukrainian refugees) became Port Leith's first vessel to receive shore-power . The technology allows berthed vessels to switch off their diesel engines/electricity generators and instead use electricity from the city grid for their onboard hotel services. In this case, the ship was provided with electricity generated from non-fossil fuels (wind turbines).

In January 2023 was also completed the Port's electrical network extension (connection to the Harbour Berth) that now allows shore-power supply to offshore construction vessels homeported in Leith.

Port Rosyth (Edinburgh)

An alternative cruise port for Edinburgh is Port Rosyth (locode GBROY), but it is rarely used. Large-sized liners usually anchor near South Queensferry (opposite to Rosyth), from where their passengers are tendered ashore. Port Rosyth is located across Forth Railway Bridge, approx 35-min drive distance from Edinburgh's downtown. Rosyth is a ferry port used by Blue Star Ferries .

South Queensferry (aka "The Ferry") is a small port town located approx 10 mi (16 km) to the northwest of Edinburgh downtown. The town is between Forth Railway Bridge and Forth Road Bridge. The prefix "South" is used to distinguish it from the town "North Queensferry". Both towns are named for the established by Queen Margaret (aka Margaret of Wessex, 1045-1093) ferry service between them. The service was discontinued in 1964, when the Forth Road Bridge was inaugurated.

The above photo shows Rosyth Dockyard (part of the seaport). Rosyth Dockyard is a naval dockyard owned and operated by Babcock Marine Ltd (2007-founded subsidiary of Babcock International Group / multinational corporation). Before the company's privatization in 1987, the large shipyard complex was named "Royal Naval Dockyard Rosyth" and was operated as British Government-owned and contractor-managed facility. In 1997, Babcock International purchased the shipyard. Currently, this is the shipbuilding yard for the UK's newest and largest aircraft carriers of the Queen Elizabeth-class.

In 2017, the Fred Olsen -owned ship Black Watch offered a total of 8 cruises leaving roundtrip from Rosyth. Operated in the period August 14 through October 14, the roundtrip itineraries included 7-night Norwegian Fjords, 10-night Northern European cities, 16-night Canary Islands and Madeira . Also roundtrip from Rosyth, In 2017 the company offered (for the first time ever) 2 river cruises. The itineraries were themed "French Rivers" and "German Waterways".

According to statistical data provided by Peter Wilson (cruiseforth.com), for season 2019, from all the 110 scheduled to visit Edinburgh cruise liners, 34 were booked at Newhaven, 29 at Rosyth, 25 at Leith and 22 at Queensferry.

In October 2022 was announced the "Forth Green Freeport" project to transform Rosyth into a modern port, an advanced shipbuilding and manufacturing center as well as a major logistics hub. The project (budgeted ~GBP 1 billion/~EUR 1,14B) included the construction of a new cargo terminal, a new rail freight connection, manufacturing facilities for the marine renewable energy industry (offshore wind farms) and green power generation.

• Forth Green Freeport covers an area of ~150 hectares/~370 acres (sites within Rosyth and Burntisland) owned by the companies Babcock International Group plc, Forth Ports Ltd and Scarborough Muir Group Ltd.
• Forth Green Freeport's employment at Rosyth and Burntisland included ~7000 newly created local jobs in addition to ~50,000 new jobs across Scotland.

In July 2022, DFDS Seaways (Danish ferry company) signed with Ptarmigan Shipping an agreement for a new freight ferry route connecting Rosyth with Zeebrugge-Bruges Belgium (opened in 2023)

Leith-Edinburgh cruise terminal

Smaller-sized cruise ships to Edinburgh dock at Leith port's cruise terminal located approx 3 mi (5 km) from downtown Edinburgh. Cruise vessels enter the port from River Forth's estuary. The dock can accommodate vessels with max LOA length 720 ft (220 m).

Newhaven UK is a tender cruise port, meaning passengers are tendered between the anchored ship and the quay (~10-min ride). Newhaven Port Authority complimentary provides bus transfer to Ocean Terminal's shopping mall. At the quay, there are a taxi rank and a bus station.

Port Leith is an important destination for Northern Europe's ship cruising industry. The port handles around 40 cruise vessels and 20,000 passengers annually. Leith Cruise Terminal provides good facilities for turnarounds (roundthrips) and transit calls.  Its central location is convenient for shore excursions and tours to Edinburgh and the surrounding areas.

The cruise ship terminal building features a modern design and has all the necessary passenger facilities, including waiting area, phone, internet, toilets. More amenities are offered by the "Ocean Terminal" shopping mall, located at 5-min walking distance from the Leith cruise port terminal. The mall has shops, banking facilities, restaurants, cafes, car parking, and is served by Lothian Buses lines 11, 22, 34, 35, 36. Lothian Buses started the direct service "X99 Cruiselink" Queensferry-Edinburgh (in 2018) and Newhaven-Edinburgh (in 2019).

At Port Leith are available taxis and shuttle buses. The port's parking area is adjacent to the cruise terminal and can accommodate up to 450 vehicles (cars and tour buses). The closest to the cruise port airport (Edinburgh Airport) is about 30 min ride. The closest to the port railway station (Waverley) is about 15-min ride from the cruise terminal.

At Ocean Terminal is also the permanently berthed Royal Yacht Britannia (officially "HMY Britannia"). This is Queen Elizabeth II's former royal yacht, operated in the period 1954-1997.

Large cruise ships dock at Newhaven (Edinburgh City's district) located between Leith and Granton. It is approx 3 km (2 ml) north of downtown Edinburgh. These liners actually anchor near Newhaven and their passengers are transported between the anchorage point and the tender pier via tender boats. This distance is approx 1,7 mi (3 km) or about 15-min ride.

At Port Rosyth, due to the lack of public transportation service, the available ways for cruise ship passengers are taxis (at the passenger / ferry terminal building) and eventually shuttle bus service provided by the cruise company.

Most cruise operators offer shuttles to Edinburgh's downtown. This service is at fee pp. The local bus operator Cramond Coaches provides an alternative shuttle service to downtown. Cramond Coaches staff will be waiting at the pier. Their buses go to Charlotte Square, from where passengers can catch the green bus (hop-on / hop-off) for the popular Edinburgh Tour. Cruise line's bus shuttle offers 25-min travel to Waterloo Place (a green bus stop).

You will be anchored and tendered to South Queensferry, within sight of the famous Forth Railway Bridge.

Most cruise lines offer shuttles to the center of Edinburgh (16.90 Euros), but only announce this the night before, so not to disturb their excursion sales.

The ship's shuttle (25 minutes trip) will drop you off at Waterloo Place, just a few steps from the point where all hop on/off buses start. Just past Waverley Station.

The local bus company Lothian run buses right at the quay side into Edinburgh taking approx 35 mins, at a cost of £12.00 each return. They drop you in Saint David`s Street which is very central, this is opposite the Scott Monument, so it is easy to find you way back to pick up the bus.Ticket can be used all day on local buses in Edinburgh.

Taxis have a fixed one way rate per taxi (not per person) for 25 Pound.

Climb a small hill (110 steps!) to the railway station at Dalmeny and spent the day in Edinburgh . Trains are every 20 minutes with a journey time of 15 minutes, and cost just over £8, for a return ticket. The off peak return rail fare from Dalmeny to Edinburgh is £5.80

Enjoy a one day private tour to the capital of Scotland from your cruise ship in Greenock. A full day exploring Edinburgh Old and New Towns . The drive takes approx. 1 hour 30 minutes which gives us about 5 hours to discover Edinburgh. We will start off with a panoramic tour of Edinburgh 's New Town then go up Arthur's Seat for some great views of the city and surrounding area. After a drive though Holyrood Park we will make a quick photo stop at Holyrood Palace and Scottish Parliament. Here you will get to hear all about Mary Queen of Scots dramatic life. But because there’s so much to do in the city, a trip can feel overwhelming… which is why so many tourists take organized trips in and around the nation’s capital.

So in this guide, I’ve helped you do exactly the same thing, by bringing you the best trips and tours from the city. Expect castles, coastlines, historical relics, a load of Harry Potter stuff, and some surprising under-the-radar gems.

Let’s get started with a pretty standard (but also pretty brilliant) walking tour.

During this one, you’ll wander around the most central and famous parts of the city… accompanied by a knowledgeable and experienced guide. Along the way, you’ll see loads of sights, learn about the city and its history, and get a chance to ask plenty of questions.

It’s affordable, it clocks in at 2 hours (the perfect time for a walking tour), and you get a detailed insight into one concentrated area of the city (instead of a superficial insight into many different areas).

The info runs all the way from medieval times to the present day, and it covers history, heritage, people, and places. Walking tours aren’t usually this good—and if you’re into this sort of thing, I massively recommend it.

• Who it’s for (and isn’t for): it’s for anyone interested in history. But kids will find it a bit boring, and it’s not suitable for anyone who can’t walk far
• What’s included (and what isn’t): there are no extra costs—but you should leave a tip at the end
• Top tips: wear a raincoat (Scotland is a pretty wet place). And wear comfy shoes, cos you’ll do more walking than you expect

Another walking tour, but underground…

… and therefore obviously pretty different to the one we’ve just brought you.

This 1-hour experience takes you deep into a subterranean part of the city, to the creepy confines of some storied and strange vaults. Part of Edinburgh’s South Bridge, these places have housed shops, craftspeople, criminals, diseases, illegal activity, and maybe even corpses.

It’s a vaguely spooky tour, with references to torture and death… but there’s nothing too harrowing or horrible. Children under 5 aren’t allowed, and children under 10 might be creeped out.

⭐ Tour highlights: a witchcraft temple, a ‘haunted’ stone circle, and spooky stories of some of Edinburgh’s most unfortunate citizens. 🗺️ Itinerary: you meet in central Edinburgh, you get walked around the vaults, then you get walked back to a different part of central Edinburgh.

• Perks and features: you can only visit the vaults as part of an organized trip, so you get to see a place that most people never do. The guides are knowledgeable and fun, and they make big efforts to ensure the tours are immersive and atmospheric
• Group size: maximum of 36 travelers
• Who it’s for (and isn’t for): it’s not suitable for people who aren’t mobile, or for claustrophobic folks
• What’s included (and what isn’t): there are no extra costs, but you’re expected to leave a tip at the end. No food is included
• Top tips: the vaults can be slippy, so wear decent shoes

Another underground experience, but much more spooky and scary.

If you’re into ghouls and ghosts, you’ll love this one.

Part of the tour takes place in the vaults (the same underground place we just covered above)… but the content is a bit more sinister in this tour.

You’ll also visit a cemetery, and some hidden tucked-away streets in the Old Town.

And for the whole tour, you’re guided around by a costume character actor, who’ll tell you loads of terrifying tales. I really can’t recommend this one enough.

If you fancy this tour, you have two options: an evening family-friendly tour, and an after-dark very-not-family-friendly tour.

⭐ Tour highlights: a tour guide who really cares, getting all spooked up, wandering around the creepy vaults, and visiting (allegedly) the world’s most haunted graveyard. 🗺️ Itinerary: you meet your guide on Edinburgh’s High Street, where you also end your tour. During the tour, you’ll head down some narrow lanes, wander into the vaults, and visit the cemetery of Greyfriars Kirkyard.

• Perks and features: you get to visit the vaults (again, you can only do so as part of an organized event), and you can (safely) explore an iconic graveyard at night
• Group size: maximum of 30 participants
• Who it’s for (and isn’t for): none of the tours are good for kids under 5—and the evening tours are spooky for any pre-teen kids

A brilliant way to cram some of Edinburgh’s best food and drink into your big fat face.

Edinburgh is a touristy city, so it (of course) has endless restaurants.

Loads of them are great, but loads of them are also pretty terrible. And the only real way to make sure you’re getting the best stuff is by hitting up a tour, armed with the local knowledge of someone who knows all the top spots.

And during this experience, that’s exactly what you get—it’s the best of all of Edinburgh’s food tours.

For 3 hours (that’s a lot of eating), you’ll munch your way around varied eateries, and get your lips around varied treats. You stop at five different places, and taste a bunch of different stuff at each one.

Along the way, you’ll learn about local food, and get insights into what you’re chewing on. Some of the food is local fayre, while some is just really tasty.

Another food-focused experience, but a bit more niche (well, actually a lot more niche).

During this creamy cheese-athon, you’ll spend around 2.5 hours munching on some of the best cheese you can find in Edinburgh. You’ll visit cheesemongers, local businesses, under-the-radar neighborhoods, and more. You’ve probably never eaten this much cheese in your life.

⭐ Tour highlights: meeting local businesses owners, learning about the foodie side of Edinburgh, and chowing down on loads and loads and loads of cheese. 🗺️ Itinerary: you’ll meet your guide in a central part of Edinburgh, and finish your tour in a (different) central part of Edinburgh. For the rest of your tour, you’ll wander between various secret-cheese spots.

• Perks and features: you get to visit some niche and largely-unknown places, where most tourists never get to go. And the guides are really fun and passionate
• Group size: maximum 15 travelers
• Who it’s for (and isn’t for): it’s not good for kids (children probably aren’t interested in 2.5 hours of learning about cheese)—and it’s not an ideal choice for picky eaters, anyone with allergies, and lactose-intolerant people

For seeing all the sights without doing much walking, this tour is perfect.

Here’s how it works: you get a 24-hour ticket, which allows you to hop on and hop off (get it?) the City Sightseeing Edinburgh buses whenever and wherever. The buses are all open-topped and easy to spot (they’re bright red), they run on a 30-minute schedule, and they stop at various points throughout the city.

It’s basically a 24-hour public transport ticket, but for public transport that’s geared to provide easy access to the most popular tourist attractions in the city. Some of the top stops include Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, the National Museum of Scotland, places to eat and drink, and loads more.

With each bus ride, you get a set of headphones… which offer contextual commentary in 7 different languages (and additional kids’ commentary from the Horrible Histories team). During some periods of the year, kids ride for free.

⭐ Tour highlights: not organizing your own transport, and seeing many sights without walking. 🗺️ Itinerary: the buses always ride in the same loop, so you can easily build your own itinerary!

• Perks and features: this is different to a normal tour, cos you get to see things at your own pace—perfect for doing things whenever you want, waking up when you like, and building your own bespoke itinerary
• Who it’s for (and isn’t for): suitable for anyone and everyone!
• What’s included (and what isn’t): with your ticket, you get 24-hour access to all buses, all commentaries, and headphones. You don’t get any food, drinks, or entry tickets
• Top tips: 24 hours isn’t as long as you think, in a sight-centric city like Edinburgh. So you should still do some planning by looking at the bus route

Another hop-on-hop-off experience, this one is focused around the royal attractions in Edinburgh (but it also covers waaaay more stuff too).

It works a bit differently to the bus tour we just covered above.

With this tour, you get 48-hour(!) access to three different hop-on-hop-off bus routes—and as part of the ticket price, you also get admission to Edinburgh Castle, Royal Yacht Britannia, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Pro Tip: Because you get those three attraction tickets as part of your trip, you don’t need to wait in the long lines to buy those tickets… so that’ll save you a chunk of time in the city.

⭐ Tour highlights: using three different bus routes to visit basically any famous attraction in the city… and not having to organize any other type of transport. 🗺️ Itinerary: again, you get to build your own itinerary!

Alright, this isn’t as unique or unusual as some other entries on our list. But it comes with two major perks:

One: If you visit Edinburgh Castle, you’ll have to wait in a lengthy line—cos whenever you come, there are always loads of tourists. But if you book this tour, you can skip the queue completely, and save a big fat chunk of time.

Two: visiting Edinburgh Castle without a guide is a pretty terrible idea. The place has so much history that you need some context and insight to really understand it. And with this experience, you get both of those things.

You’ll hear juicy details running all the way from the Iron Age to the present day. You’ll learn about royalty, prisoners, religion, the history of Edinburgh, all the big names associated with the castle, and plenty more. The tour takes around 1.5 hours—then you’re free to explore other parts of the castle yourself.

Another walking tour!

Maybe you’re traveling with kids. Maybe you used to read the Harry Potter books when you were a kid. Maybe you are just a big kid.

Whatever the case, this is the best tour for discovering the fictional wizard’s ties to Edinburgh. You’ll learn about locations that inspired the stories, see places where the movies were filmed, and wander through areas that look like they were plucked from the franchise.

You’ll walk around Edinburgh for two hours, also getting some insights into the city’s real history as you go.

• What’s included (and what isn’t): your guide is included, but you don’t get anything else. Take some cash, to leave a tip
• Top tips: most of the tour is outside, so take some warm and waterproof clothes

Who doesn’t like floating along on a boat?

The Firth of Forth is a massive estuary leading from the sea into the Forth River. And on this tour, you get to cruise along it.

For around 90 minutes, you’ll see loads of shoreside highlights… including three big beefy bridges (Queensferry Crossing, the Forth Road Bridge, and the Forth Bridge, which is an official UNESCO site), views of Fife and Edinburgh, and maybe some seals and puffins. And the whole way, you’ll get some insightful on-boat commentary.

As part of your trip, you can also hop off the boat, and step foot onto Inchcolm Island. But if you’re visiting between May and August, the nesting birds might restrict your access.

The tour starts from Hawes Pier, in Queensferry. To get there, your best option is to take a train from central Edinburgh… and get off at Dalmeny. It’s an easy journey, and you’ll be on the train for only 15 minutes.

⭐ Tour highlights: views of Inchcolm Island, seeing a different side to Edinburgh, and getting to take a city-center cruise. 🗺️ Itinerary: The boat will depart from the South Queensferry, stop at Inchcolm Island, and sail by Forth Road suspension bridge.

• Perks and features: the boat company are an experienced crew, so the tour is informative, interesting, and safe. The boat has both outside and inside seating areas, and a bar for drinks and snacks
• Who it’s for (and isn’t for): it’s suitable for anyone—but it’s particularly good for couples, and people with kids
• What’s included (and what isn’t): included in your ticket price, you get the boat ride and the commentary. You have to pay extra for access to Inchcolm Island, and for any snacks and drinks
• Top tips: out on the boat, it’ll be colder than you think… so take warm clothes

Another watery funfest, but even (in my opinion at least) better than the last one.

Fife is one of Scotland’s most underrated areas. An eastern-Scotland peninsula, it’s brimming with little fishing villages, charming towns, and the iconic St Andrews.

And this tour takes you to the best of it.

If you like coastlines and coastal settlements, I can’t recommend this tour enough.

The main attraction here is St Andrews, most famous for its university and golf courses. But other big perks include Anstruther (one of the prettiest coastal settlements in all of Scotland), and the hillside town of Falkland.

The most immersive and detailed tour from Edinburgh, this offers 3 stuffed days of fun.

Skye is brimming with a load of varied adventure. But it’s tough to explore the island from Edinburgh without your own car… so this hefty tour is a convenient solution to your dilemma.

3-day tours aren’t usually crammed with this much excitement. With your ticket, you get a massive range of variety, including adventures on Skye, adventures on the way to Skye, and adventures on the way back from Skye.

You’ll hit coasts, castles, hikes, viewpoints, lochs, rivers, and loads more. It’s a great balance between history, heritage, outdoor attractions, and foodie fun. For a varied introduction to the Skye (and some areas around it), you won’t find better.

• Top tips: this is a pretty non-stop tour—so it’s best for people with lots of energy

When most tourists take trips from Edinburgh, they head north.

But for something a bit more unusual and underrated, it’s a good idea to head south.

The main highlight of this trip is Hadrian’s Wall —built in AD122, it was designed to stop the northern barbarians from entering Roman territory. Now, the place is home to museums, fragments of wall, a load of mile castles, and some of the best walks in northern England.

Other stops on the tour include places in and along the Scottish Borders (that’s the most southern part of Scotland).

• Perks and features: you get loads of insights into the area and its history, and you easily reach some usually-hard-to-reach places
• Group size: maximum 16 travelers—and you all share the same minivan
• Who it’s for (and isn’t for): it’s good for history buffs—anyone else might find it a bit boring. It’s not suitable for people who aren’t very mobile
• What’s included (and what isn’t): all admission tickets are included, except the ticket into Jedburgh Abbey. The transport and guide are also included, but you need to pay for your own food and drink
• Top tips: Hadrian’s Wall (and all of its sites and forts) are pretty exposed and hilly—it gets windy and cold, so take warm clothes

Another northern-England experience… but this tour takes you to different parts of Northumberland.

The three biggest sights on this trip are Bamburgh Castle (which you only drive past, but it’s massive and beautiful), Alnwick Castle (one of the biggest and most impressive in the whole region), and Holy Island (a weird small once-religious isle only accessible when the tide is out).

On Holy Island, you’ll see the priory, the castle, and some of its shorelines…

… and in Alnwick, you’ll stroll through the castle, wander around the gardens (including the hefty waterfall and the poison-plant area), and learn about royal history in the region.

⭐ Tour highlights: the border town of Coldstream, and seeing Bamburgh Castle, Alnwick Castle and Holy Island (three of the most iconic sites in all of Northumberland). 🗺️ Itinerary: you’ll meet in a central part of Edinburgh, where you’ll also finish your tour. The rest of the time, you’ll be driven around by your guides. The whole tour is around 9 hours.

• Perks and features: you get to visit Holy Island without worrying about tide times, you visit some hard-to-reach places, and the guides are fun and friendly
• Who it’s for (and isn’t for): it’s best for people interested in history (especially religious history). It’s not suitable for young kids, or people who can’t do much walking
• What’s included (and what isn’t): the guide is included, as is transport. You don’t get any food or drinks, and you need to pay extra to enter the attractions
• Top tips: on select days, the tours don’t run, cos Holy Island is sometimes inaccessible due to tide times. So check in advance!

This trip takes you to some of the best-known parts of the Scottish Highlands.

The biggest name here is Loch Ness, which is (of course) famous for being the biggest loch in the nation… and the alleged home of a big weird underwater dinosaur thing. If you want to see Loch Ness from Edinburgh (just like most tourists seem to!), this is the tour for you.

As part of your Loch Ness trip, you can take an optional boat tour… and you’ll see the on-loch Urquhart Castle.

I reckon Glencoe is the real gem here. Though you don’t spend much time exploring the glen (just a few photo opportunities), you drive along the A82, which cuts through the heart of it. It’s one of the most iconic and scenic roads in all of Scotland.

⭐ Tour highlights: seeing Highland cows, visiting the super-charming town of Pitlochry, driving along the outrageously beautiful A82 road, and ticking off the iconic shores of Loch Ness. 🗺️ Itinerary: you start and end your trip in central Edinburgh. The rest of the time, you’re driven around, visiting (in the following order) Kilmahog, Glencoe, Loch Ness, and Pitlochry.

• Perks and features: you can enjoy beautiful roads without having to drive them, and you’ll learn juicy facts about some of the most well-known outdoor areas in Scotland
• Who it’s for (and isn’t for): it’s not ideal for people who don’t like sitting around—most of this tour takes place on the bus
• What’s included (and what isn’t): you don’t get any food or drinks, but the guide and transportation are included. You can add extra entry tickets when you book your trip

Another of the best day trips from Edinburgh , and another Highlands tour (but slightly different to the one we’ve just covered).

Between this tour and the last one, this is the one I’d choose. I think this experience is more interesting… and Loch Ness (in my opinion) is a bit overrated.

Along your tour, you’ll hit the valley of Glencoe and the town of Pitlochry, spotting the same sights we’ve already covered in the tour above. But instead of seeing Loch Ness, this tour covers the close-to-Glencoe town of Fort William, and the mega-famous Glenfinnan Viaduct.

The Glenfinnan Viaduct is so well-known for its appearances in the Harry Potter movies; it’s the scenic spot where the Hogwarts Express chugs along to Hogwarts. But here’s a top tip for you: the train only runs between May and September—so if you’re traveling to Scotland outside of those dates, don’t bother with this tour (cos you’ll miss the best bit).

⭐ Tour highlights: Harry Potter sights, seeing a train ride over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, distant views of Ben Nevis, and the drive through Glencoe. 🗺️ Itinerary: you’ll meet in central Edinburgh, where you’ll also finish your tour. During the trip, you’ll be driven (likely in the following order) to Glencoe, Fort William, Glenfinnan Viaduct, and Pitlochry. You’ll also see lots of lochs and mountains en-route.

• Perks and features: funny tour guides, loads of historical insights, and some interesting Harry Potter tidbits
• Who it’s for (and isn’t for): it’s great for people who like Harry Potter, and families with pre-teen kids. It’s not good for people who don’t like sitting around—you’ll spend a lot of time on the bus
• What’s included (and what isn’t): the guide and transport are included. You don’t get any food or drinks
• Top tips: you don’t get to ride the steam train—you just get to see it

This one’s a bit niche. But if you’re interested in the Outlander TV show, you’ll love it.

The show is some historical TV drama based around a military nurse who gets transported back in time to the 1700s…

… and during this tour, you’ll visit some of the locations from the show. Expect castles, a palace, little villages, and spots from some of the most significant Outlander moments.

Along the way, you’ll also learn *actual* facts about the places you’re visiting, and their history and heritage. And you’ll see some beautiful places—a nice little perk even if they weren’t related to the show.

Another trip out of Edinburgh… but this one takes you to some (vaguely-)lesser-known attractions.

The most famous of them all is Loch Lomond, the biggest of the 30,000 lochs in Scotland. You’ll see some of its shores, and get the optional choice of a boat ride across the place (which you’d be silly not to take).

You’ll also hit close-to-Loch-Lomond Aberfoyle, one of the cutest and coziest towns in this part of Scotland.

Meanwhile, Stirling Castle is pretty similar to Edinburgh Castle (it sits on a hill, it dominates the city, it offers lovely views, and it has loads of history crammed into its confines). But because it’s not so touristy, it’s in some ways more interesting.

Rounding things off, The Kelpies are two massive (and weird) horse-shaped sculptures. They measure in at a height of 100 feet (30 meters).

In short, this tour gives you lots of variety, and it’s a good insight into some of the most interesting locations in southern Scotland.

They were due to leave for their dream cruise in May. Three months on they’re still stuck at the departure port

It was the years-long cruise that was supposed to set sail, but saw its departure postponed… postponed… and postponed again.

The Villa Vie Odyssey was set to depart in May for the trip of a lifetime: three and a half years chasing the sun around the globe, allowing its passengers to wallow in an eternal summer.

But more than three months on, the ship has yet to depart. It is holed up in the harbor at Belfast, Northern Ireland, still waiting on certification that it is safe to set sail.

If this sounds familiar, it’s not déjà vu. Another company, Life at Sea Cruises, had scheduled a three year round-the-world cruise – the first of its kind to be relatively affordable - for departure in 2023. That voyage was postponed again and again, before being canceled definitively in November.

However, there’s one crucial difference between Life at Sea and Villa Vie Residences, the company attempting the 3.5-year cruise: Villa Vie has a ship.

The company took possession of the Braemar from Fred. Olsen Cruises in March. The 31-year-old vessel, now renamed and refurbished as the Odyssey, has just completed sea trials – essentially a test drive – in the waters off Belfast.

And while the weeks may be dragging on, many would-be passengers – who have arrived in Belfast in May ready for boarding – are keeping their mood buoyed.

“We’re having a good time,” said Lanette Canen, who is booked to sail with her partner, Johan Bodin. The pair – who were previously living in Hawaii – paid US$100,000 for their cabin, which will remain theirs for the ship’s lifetime, estimated to be around 15 years. They then pay a US$3,500 monthly fee to be onboard.

Canen and Bodin spoke to CNN from Stirling, Scotland, which they were visiting after Edinburgh and Glasgow. The pair have spent the summer traveling northern Europe, taking in nine countries, from Sweden – where Bodin is originally from – to Scotland.

“We’re not stuck in Belfast, we’ve been traveling,” she said.

“It’s a start-up and we’ve both run businesses – we know there will be hiccups when starting something so we weren’t that worried,” said Bodin.

“It’s been three months but they’ve been transparent about what the hiccups are. We’ve learned a lot about ships.”

Starting from scratch

They’re not the only ones. Villa Vie CEO Mike Petterson had told CNN on July 27 that the ship was ready to sail on July 30 – but it did not. He blames a longer than usual certification process for the delay.

The ship finally had sea trials – a kind of monitored test drive for both the vessel and its crew – on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

Petterson said that the company has already been given the results: “Everything was good, we passed everything.”

He said that they were given “a couple of takeaways” of “adjustments” to be made, including regarding staff training, but that these wouldn’t impede the certification and departure of the ship. He said that “any outstanding items will be done over the weekend.”

Sea trials are one of the last stages in getting PSSC (Passenger Ship Survey Certification), which allows the vessel to start its voyage.

The final stage is getting coastguard clearance, which he hopes will happen on Monday or Tuesday, enabling the ship to set sail next week.

Petterson said that the delay has been down to the ship – constructed in 1993 – being held to the standards of a new vessel.

Fred. Olsen had taken the Braemar out of service during the pandemic, and retired it when its operations started up again after the lockdowns. This meant the certifications had expired – and instead of simply renewing them, Villa Vie was obliged to start from scratch.

Petterson said that issues have arisen where DNV – the company conducting the certification, which he says has always certified the Braemar – has asked for documentation of past repairs to the vessel, which Fred. Olsen has not supplied.

Other work was recommended in the past but not done, he says – adding that one bearing was recommended to be replaced in 2003, and that DNV will not let Villa Vie set sail without replacing it, although the ship had previously been recertified multiple times. He said that because Villa Vie doesn’t have the documentation of a 2007 repair to an engine, a new repair must be undertaken – and documented thoroughly.

“There is an evident double standard between what’s acceptable for us now and what was acceptable in 2017 and 2019 [when the ship was last inspected],” he said. “Fred. Olsen has been around a long time – it’s a relatively low risk company. I expected continuity, but I got zero credit. Boy have I learned a lot.”

He said that when despite vowing in July that the ship would leave in days, “Every time I’ve given a date I’ve been wrong.”

He said that DNV has launched an investigation into how the ship previously had its certifications renewed in the circumstances.

A spokesperson for DNV said that it does not comment on individual clients’ cases. Samantha Stimpson, CEO of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, told CNN:

“We enjoyed many happy years of sailing with this ship, and completed thorough and regular maintenance throughout her operational time. She was in lay up during the pandemic.

“Prior to the sale, the ship was subject to a full and independent survey and technical inspections by the team at Villa Vie.

“We wish Villa Vie every success in their upcoming venture with this wonderful ship.”

'We’ve been in Belfast longer than the lord mayor'

There’s a lot riding on the Odyssey’s departure for those who have bought places. Some have sold their homes to go on the trip of a lifetime. Others lost money to Life at Sea but have thrown the dice one more time.

Fran Paroissien, a retired teacher from Melbourne, Australia, paid US$57,000 for a cabin on Life at Sea, and has yet to receive a penny back.

Having paid her deposit for Villa Vie once it had confirmed a ship, she’s been waiting in Belfast since May 25.

Paroissien isn’t as mobile as some of the other passengers – she has osteoarthritis and uses a walker to get around. So while others have spent the summer traveling Europe, she’s stayed close to Belfast.

“I was sick of sitting in my apartment in Melbourne – I’ve been sitting there for 10 years since I was widowed – and I really hate airports,” she said.

“The company has offered opportunities to the Canary Islands and the Seychelles but I really hate flights. So I’ve been on two ferries: to Liverpool and Glasgow, and the train to Edinburgh, but only for a few days at a time.”

For the rest of the time she has been at Belfast. “Everyone has been great,” she said. “Last Monday the lord mayor of Belfast had us over for morning tea. There were about 60 or 70 of us there. He said we’d been in Belfast longer than he’d been lord mayor.” Micky Murray, the lord mayor, has been in position since June 3.

The company is pledging to pay stranded passengers a per diem, which they can claim back in onboard credit for their monthly fees, she said.

“I’m confident about Villa Vie,” she said. “Life at Sea didn’t even buy a ship. This is a ship. It has new rudders, engines. They have employed staff, repaired kitchens and rooms. They have funding – it’s going to happen. It’s just that the powers that be are treating it as a new ship so everything has to be 100%.”

Booted off for negativity

Not everyone is so relaxed.

“Some people need the details – where did you get that from, why did it take so long?” said Paroissien. “They’re interested in the details of why we are still here. I’m interested in the fact that it’s a beautiful day, what shall we do today?”

And anyone voicing doubts might have concerns about repercussions. Petterson says that as well as seven people canceling their trips, two have been booted off the cruise for making “negative statements” about Villa Vie to their fellow residents. The two passengers involved dispute this. One, Bonny Kelter, told CNN: “We had long-standing contracts and they were unilaterally canceled by Villa Vie Residences without warning.” Kelter, 66 – who says she was hoping to live on the ship “for the rest of my life” – has not yet been refunded, Petterson admitted.

If the cruise does depart as planned in the coming days, things will have changed. “We’ll have missed all of segment one and most of two,” said Paroissien. Since the plan was to chase the sun, they will skip ahead, and possibly loop back to the original destinations at the end. “It depends on what the people who are on it by then want,” said Paroissien, who plans to stay onboard for as long as she can. “I hope I’ll outlive the ship,” she said, saying she doesn’t want to end up in an old people’s home in Australia.

'Not what we were expecting'

Americans Angela and Steve Theriac, who say they’ve taken around 50 cruises together in the past, say that they plan to set sail but then might leave the ship and pick it up again once it reaches the Caribbean, since he gets seasick, and the Odyssey is a relatively small ship.

“It’s definitely not what we were expecting, and it’s been frustrating at times, but we know we’re about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime,” said Angela.

The pair arrived on May 27, and have taken two cruises and traveled around Spain, Denmark and Liverpool in the intervening weeks.

“We’ve done all the touristy things around Belfast,” said Angela. “We’ve been to Bushmills, the Giant’s Causeway, we went to Dublin and did the Guinness tour.”

The pair are now back in Belfast and have been eating their meals on the ship for the past two weeks. Villa Vie is covering their hotel stay.

The couple – she is a retired high school teacher, and he was a sheriff’s deputy – are in an ocean view cabin.

“Some people say, ‘How can you live in such a small space?’,” said Angela. “Firstly, I’d live in a tent if it meant I can travel. Secondly, that’s just my bedroom – the ship is my home and you should see my back yard.”

For Steve Theriac, the ship’s smaller size is a bonus – “its easy to get around,” he said.

The pair moved to Nicaragua after retiring, which they think has helped them deal with the delay better.

“We’re used to the ‘hurry up and wait’ mentality,” said Angela. “If we didn’t have Nicaragua so ingrained in us we probably wouldn’t be able to handle it, but we’ve turned it into adventures.”

The couple have also been upgraded from an interior room to an ocean view, which has likely helped their mood. They’ve started a YouTube page to document their journey, as have Canen and Bodin.

For the Theriacs, the delay has just brought the passengers closer together. “Our big bond is that we’re all in this together, all waiting, all getting impatient – we are coming from all over the world but we are all travelers at heart,” said Angela.

In the meantime, they wait and hope that their dream to chase the sun lives on.
