Don has called Nashville home for over 14 years. He has his heart in the East Nashville sound and scene, but his California roots are never far away. He has weaved his 1970's Laurel Canyon influences into modern roots-Americana, while mixing southern and western sounds comfortably. He has released 10 albums during his time in Nashville.

Oasis reunion confirmed but Liam and Noel ‘could explode’ before tour, friend warns

A record-breaking Oasis reunion will happen but Liam and Noel Gallagher’s truce “could explode at any point” a childhood friend has told i .

Fans have been sent into a frenzy by hints from the band that the brothers will reform for a series of huge shows in London and Manchester next year.

This week will mark 30 years since the release of the seminal album Definitely, Maybe which was followed up a year later by What’s the Story? (Morning Glory) .

An announcement is expected tomorrow after both Liam and Noel published a teaser on their social media channels last night with the date “27.08.24” and “8am” in the style of the Oasis logo.

Paul Ashbee, who goes by the nickname “Bigun”, grew up with the brothers in Manchester in the 80s and 90s and is credited with played a crucial role convincing them to form a band together.

He told i he believes the comeback is definitely going to happen.

“Yeah it’s come from [former Oasis guitarist] Bonehead,” Mr Ashbee said. “I believe there was a phone call [between Liam and Noel] – it’s been going on for a few weeks.”

Although both brothers have had successful solo careers, Oasis hasn’t played a gig since 2009 when their fractious relationship finally crumbled after years of public fallouts.

The pair have continued to trade insults ever since, leaving the possibility of a reunion looking unlikely.

However, Mr Ashbee believes Liam and Noel, now aged 51 and 57, have finally decided to put their differences aside for personal and financial reasons.

“This [the reunion] has probably all been about Peggy [Liam and Noel’s mother],” he said. “It must have been so hard for her with the pair of them.

“It’s been such an amazing thing [Oasis] and to see them always putting each other down, I really think she’s played a massive part, she’s always been in the middle of it.

“It must have been breaking her heart, if they hadn’t have made a decision to get back together, I think it would have played on their minds massively, knowing your mother wants her sons to be good together, to be happy, I think there will be a lot of that in it.”

Liam and Noel Gallagher make further hints about Oasis reunion

Rumours suggest Oasis have booked a series of shows next summer including the Etihad stadium in Manchester and 10 nights at Wembley in London, surpassing the record recent set by Taylor Swift.

Industry experts have suggested the reunion could be worth more than £400m.

“It’s a business decision more than anything, I don’t think they will spend that much time together,” said Mr Ashbee, who wrote a book about his life with the Gallaghers called Giving it the Bigun: Oasis, Manchester, Football and Me .

“Liam will be thinking ‘I’ve still not forgiven you, I still think you’re a twat but I want to do this for the kids, they deserve it’. There’s a generation out there they owe it to.

“And they’ve still got a lot to give, they’ve got a lot of energy, the comeback will be amazing, I’m buzzing for the kids.”

The animosity between Liam and Noel – which has resulted in numerous fistfights, walkouts and name-calling – has made tabloid headlines for decades.

But Mr Ashbee said the darker truth is that the brothers grew up in a troubled household – both have spoken openly of the physical abuse the family suffered at the hands of their father Tommy.

“They’re not a boy band, they’ve not had amazing lives as kids and grown up in a lovely environment,” he added. “Families are families – back in the 70s it wasn’t easy, that was pretty much the norm.”

Recalling what the Gallaghers were like as young men, Mr Ashbee said they never saw eye-to-eye.

“There were so many times I spent in between them two fighting, walking out [the band], the times that Liam left and I told him to come back,” he added. “Liam always wanted to be with his big brother, somebody he looked up to, and Noel didn’t want to know, he kept him away.

“The moment he [Noel] saw Oasis he wanted it, then he jumped into it. Noel just made it very serious, it was all about him, he always digging people out, putting people down, picking on Liam, you could always feel that animosity.

“It’s as if they can’t meet in the middle. They would stay in different hotels, travel in different buses.

“Noel went in one direction, Liam the other. They will never be as one, I know plenty of brothers like that, but you wouldn’t have Oasis if they weren’t that way.”

With so much anticipation – and money – at stake, the question remains as to whether the brothers can avoid yet another argument that blows up the come back tour before it’s even begun.

“That can explode at any point, they could have a row in the next 24 hours, you don’t know with Liam,” Mr Ashbee said.

“You can imagine that phone call [they had to agree the comeback], it would always be Liam chatting fucking shit, getting right up his arse when he doesn’t need to be. Liam just says what he thinks.

“They’ve grown as people since then. I met Liam in 2012 and he was a totally different person, he’s grown, he’s stronger, he’s wise.

“He’s had great success in the last five or six years, I think Noel has seen that success and given him the recognition.

“They’ve shown they can be human and empathise.”

Liam and Noel Gallagher – timeline of a rock ‘n’ roll feud The Gallagher brothers have been prone to violent bust-ups ever since they shared a bedroom growing up in a council house in Burnage, south Manchester. After Definitely, Maybe became the fastest-selling album in UK history, the band headed out on their first US tour in 1994. Noel became frustrated by the level of excess the others were enjoying and a gig in LA ended in acrimony with Liam hitting him on the head with a tambourine and walking offstage. Noel briefly quit the band before agreeing to come back. In 1995, audio of an interview with NME magazine surfaced which revealed the pair squabbling in an increasingly abusive conversation. After Noel called his brother a “football hooligan”, Liam responded “you can stick your thousand pounds right up your f***kin’ arse till it comes out your f**king big toe.” In 1996, Liam walked out of a performance on iconic 90s TV show MTV Unplugged minutes before the band were due on. Noel decided to go ahead with the show alone but his brother sat in the audience and heckled him throughout. In 2000, a story emerged that the brothers had come to blows during a drunken night out in Barcelona. Noel apparently saw red when Liam went beyond the usual mickey-taking and questioned the paternity of his brother’s daughter Anais. Noel left the tour but not the band and later said he’d “never forgiven” Liam because he hadn’t apologised. In 2009, the cracks finally split beyond repair. Noel issued a statement saying he had quit the band hours before they were due on stage at the Rock En Seine festival in Paris. “It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight,” he wrote. “People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.” The pair have continued to trade insults for years since. Liam once called his brother a “sad little dwarf” and a “miserable little f**k” adding: “I’d rather eat my own shit than be in a band with him again.” The arrival of Twitter, now X, gave Liam a new platform to frequently abuse his brother to an audience, mixed in with the occasional offer to reform Oasis. Asked about one such offer in 2011, Noel said: “That doesn’t mean shit to me. Because he’s on f**king Twitter right now, saying the exact opposite. If he’s in here, on camera, playing to the gallery, fine, good. “Actually, when it f**king matters, when he’s abusing my wife and my kids, it’s like no no no no no, you don’t get to f**king do both, do you know what I mean? Either be a c**t and own it, right, or don’t be a c**t.”

Oasis are a band like no other – the reunion hype is fully justified

Maybe… definitely? Almost 30 years to the day since the release of Oasis ’s debut album, it seems beyond doubt that the news fans have been dreaming of for 15 years is about to land. Yesterday, both Noel and Liam Gallagher (and the official Oasis account) tweeted a time and date written in the rock band’s font: 8am, 27/08/2024.

The prospect of an Oasis reunion has been bandied about so much over the years that you’d think fans were trying to speak it into existence. Yet it could only have ever really happened now, after the once-warring brothers had proved themselves as successful artists in their own right – Liam as a solo singer (his band Beady Eye didn’t fare quite so well) and Noel with his High Flying Birds. Some growing up has taken place: marriages, kids, divorces. Liam enjoys a bike ride, a face mask and an early night. Some of the harder liquor has been swapped out for apple cider vinegar.

Early reports might have jumped the gun a tad, but a string of live shows next year seem like a certainty if a reunion is in fact what we are getting. No one is exactly crying out for a new Oasis album (although that would be interesting), but there are thousands, if not millions, of fans who would give their right arm for a ticket to see the band play Wembley Stadium in London or Heaton Park in Manchester.

Claims that they’ll surpass Taylor Swift’s record of eight Wembley shows in a single tour are off the mark – she holds the record for a solo artist, after beating Michael Jackson’s seven shows in 1988. Oasis would have to sell out nine shows to beat the record set by Take That in 2011 during their Progress tour, when they were reunited with Robbie Williams.

Naysayers might ask why reports of a band reunion are generating so much hype, when plenty of their Britpop peers have done the same in recent years . Blur returned to Wembley Stadium in July 2023, the same month that Pulp sold out Finsbury Park as part of their massive UK tour.

But no other rock band of their time really compares when it comes to that narrative arc: the humble origins, the difficult childhoods then the rise to global fame. The partying, the excess. Then the Romulus and Remus-level fallout of 2009, when Liam squared off with his brother in a backstage room at Rock en Seine festival in Paris, wielding Noel’s guitar “like an axe”. And now, it seems, the reconciliation.

Of course, there are the songs. I defy anyone not to be stirred by the acoustic intro of “Wonderwall”, or roar along to the chorus of “Cigarettes and Alcohol”. I never got to see Oasis live, but I did end up standing on a chair (I know, I know) for a particularly soused rendition of the latter at the NME Awards in 2018, where Liam had just been handed the Godlike Genius award. Yes, they were gobby in the press and on the street, but the songwriting carried with it a sense of community. Anyone could go along to a gig solo and find themselves with a drunken arm thrown affectionately around their shoulders. Liam’s unmistakable holler – a kind of sneering, fists-raised yowl – still makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

I was born into Britpop. Definitely Maybe and (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? both came out when I was still a toddler; my older brother bought me Don’t Believe the Truth for my 13th birthday, a couple of months after it came out. Other critics can hate on that album all they like – I remember the thrill of hearing that jangling opener “Turn Up the Sun”. The punchy guitar on “Lyla” still hits home; “The Importance of Being Idle” is the best homage to date to “Sunny Afternoon” by The Kinks (with a bit of “Dead End Street” thrown in for good measure).

Living through the Nineties, even if you weren’t a fan, it was as though Oasis permeated every facet of British pop culture. Their tunes blared out from every radio station; Liam and Noel’s faces scowled at you from every newspaper stand. And every week, it felt as though there was another record smashed, or else some new scandal or scrap they’d got themselves into. Their live shows were, as critics have pointed out plenty of times, hit and miss, more often than not dependent on Liam’s degree of sobriety.

Sources close to the band have told me that a reunion has been in the works for some time, and Liam has, despite his habit of poking the bear, never hidden his willingness to get the gang back together. In 2017, he was more than happy to praise Noel (“a good songwriter”) and said he missed being in a band with his brother. Particularly as he wasn’t a huge fan of giving interviews.

“That was the good balance of Oasis,” he told me . “But now I’ve got to do a bit of that kind of thing and I’ll probably have to get media trained.”

He never did. But fans paying attention to his social media will have noticed how the swipes at Noel have become less and less frequent, traded in for compliments about his songwriting, or his High Flying Birds project. Arguably one of the biggest clues that those fences had been mended was when Noel offered rare praise for his younger sibling in a recent interview.

“It’s the delivery or the tone of his voice and the attitude,” he told musician and critic John Robb of Liam’s performance on hits such as “Slide Away”, “Cigarettes and Alcohol” and “Rock ’N’ Roll Star”.

“I don’t have the same attitude as him,” he continued, comparing Liam’s voice to “a shot of tequila” and his to “half a Guinness”... “Liam’s is 10 shots of tequila on a Friday night,” he joked.
