Most news items keep us informed about our world but are not part of our daily experience. However, sometimes an event happens that feels very personal and close to home. That was my experience when I heard about Japan’s Noto Peninsula earthquake on New Year’s Day 2024.

In March 2023 I spent an amazing day near the towns of Suzu and Wajima at the tip of the Noto Peninsula.

Amazing trip, great group of guys

I was initially a little worried about going on a group trip, not knowing anybody and being used to doing my own thing on holiday, but I signed up because every review was so positive. Well there’s a reason those reviews are so damn good! I had an amazing time on their Greece trip in June. Within days I felt so comfortable, so relaxed and had so many new friends. Detours offers such a flexible trip, which you can make your own and do the activities you want. You simply must do the mud bath on Santorini - your skin feels so good afterwards - and the ATVs on Milos are a highlight – exploring the island is awesome. As a vego, there were always options at the restaurants (occasionally a bit repetitive), and on Milos lots of amazing locally made cheeses. Shane is the greatest trip leader! He’s such a fun, easy going and experienced leader who really goes the extra mile to make your trip memorable. I’ll definitely be a repeat customer.

We had an amazing trip with Detours to Costa Rica. Really enjoyed being part of the group. Excellent program and guide. Good value for money. But do read carefully what you sign up for. Detours runs a concept that is different from your average tour operator. So be sure this is really the kind of travel you want.

Detours delivers with South Africa

Do you enjoy adventure? Meeting new people? Wildlife? If so, Detours has yet another amazing destination for you! South Africa has some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes that I have experienced. Miles and Dan, the group leaders, did a wonderful job of exposing us to some of the amazing culture and cuisine that CapeTown, Paarl, Kruger Park and Johannesburg have to offer. In true Detours fashion, they offered up a ton of options for ways to experience the cities/towns we visited. The word “option” is always important because there is never pressure from any of the group leaders to pack your day full, unless that’s what you want. The Detours experience is catered to you, which I LOVE! There is never a shortage of options for activities and this trip had some exceptional experiences to offer. Everyone seems to have a “bucket list” and just going to South Africa was on mine…little did I know I would cage dive with great white sharks, see the big 5 in Kruger Park and be able to get up close with an elephant in an elephant sanctuary. This trip really has something for everybody. I highly recommend heading to South Africa with Detours.

"Winelands, Wild Animals, Winds of The Cape"--South Africa

As a veteran traveler, I seek the challenges of diversity, culture, adventure in a foreign land and my hopes were more than met by the inaugural Detours Travel trip to South Africa. My title captures all the W's for Wins in this wondrous adventure that explored the winelands of Parrl (reminiscent of California Central Valley) where you will learn a lot traveling to vineyards, Then there were the safaris, most notably to famed Kruger National Park (the size of New Jersey) where we were fortunate in seeing all the major WILD animals, highlighted by the elusive leopard who dramatically posed on top of an anthill for us. I was thrilled to see Cape Hope, the cliffs, pounding waves, black penguin colony, rugged landscape in a national park. Capetown is one of the "coolest" seaport towns I have ever experienced with endless activities and friendly people. Then the unanticipated surprises--visiting an elephant sanctuary and touching all parts of the elephant, visiting one of the world's largest canyons, Blyde River Canyon Nature Preserve, and getting to feed the vultures at the Mohotoholo Wildlife Sanctuary and the opportunity to see diverse parts of the South African landscape--savannahs, mountain rages, desert, rivers, shoreline, beaches, farmland, vineyards, and, of course, Tabletop Mt. National Park. Balmy sunny weather, fine hotels, delicious food (inexpensive...and best burgers anywhere). The key element of all of this were our two dedicated, caring, skillful, charming, energetic, helpful guides, Miles and Dan, who admirably strived that each individual had the best possible trip. ---Kenny

I will definitely recommend detours madagascar to friends.

The whole planning, the professional way of your dealing with everything, your kindness and your help there (luggage). Nicole was also such a great guide. She always tried to make us feel good and safe. The whole week was great organized and full of nice experiences for us. We really enjoyed our time and I will definitely recommend Detours Madagascar to friends!

Maybe we will book other tours for next year.

The whole trip was really good organized, everything worked out..

First of all we want to say thank you for a marvelous holiday! We did have a great time and really loved Madagaskar and its people very much!! Thank you also for keeping our souvenirs and transporting them for us! We really appreciate this.

The whole trip was really good organized, everything worked out. 👍 Only when they forgot us in Tamatave, but thanks to your good and fast reaction (in the middle of the night) everything still worked out fine.

(...) We were really happy with your work, thank you so much!!!❤️

Jaanus Nurme

Thank you for our marvellous trip.

We had very good time in Madagascar. We had super guide Harison who knows his work perfectly. Due to Harison we learned much about  Madagaskar.

Harison took good care of us. He is inteligent, smart and he made a good humour. Always was funny.

All the hotels were very good. When one of us had a health problem he got help from La Bella Donna personel and was cured in one day. They cooked a magic tea.

Our local guides Patrick, Roxy and Pedro were kind, professional. All the trips were organized as per our request.

We were attracted by marvellous nature, climate and kind people.

We have advised our friends to visit Madagaskar. If any of them decide to visit you they will get all contacts from us. Our daughter and his husband planning to visit Madagaskar next spring already.

Once again thank you and who knows perhaps someday we will come back.

Cynthia and Harison, thank you for our marvellous trip.

Best regards to all DETOURS MADAGASKAR team

Loïc Cuigniez

We had a perfect 2week trip from antananarivo to tulear thanks to detours..

A Madagascar organisation. We had a perfect 2week trip from Antananarivo to Tulear thanks to Detours. Our guide/driver Narindra was intelligent, incredibly friendly and his French and English is very good. Olive booked all the accommodations and she did a great job. We stayed in beautiful lodges and bungalows with delicious food (included in the price). The entry fee in the national parks and the local guide were also included in the price. We saw a lot of kameleons and lemurs and that was a fun. All together it was a wonderful holiday at a fairly low price with little rain and a lot of sun even though we went in February. I recommended this locally run Madagascar travel organisation to my friends and family. So if you want to make a trip in Madagascar, this is it :)

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.

The landscape across Madagascar is so varied and beautiful, it was nice to be able to drive through and see. We ended our trip in Ifaty in a lovely beach resort. It was the perfect way to relax after all the hiking and we made a couple of extra excursions snorkeling and to the baobab forest.

Middletown travel agency owner charged with using customer credit cards for personal purchases

de tour travel agency

Delaware State Police arrested Jane Fencer, 55,  of Townsend, for making fraudulent credit card purchases through her Middletown-based travel agency, Wanderlust Tours and Travel.

On January 26, troopers received a report of multiple unauthorized credit card purchases made through Wanderlust Tours and Travel at 717 South Cox Street in Middletown.

Troopers learned that in December 2023, Fencer allegedly used a former customer’s credit card for over $19,000 worth of unauthorized purchases. During the investigation, Troop 2 Criminal Investigations Detectives learned that former customers of Fencer’s travel agency reported unauthorized purchases made by Fencer on their credit cards. Detectives obtained a warrant for Fencer’s arrest.

Fencer turned herself in at Troop 2 in Bear.

The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Criminal Investigations Unit continues to investigate this incident. Anyone with further information regarding this case or who is aware of similar incidents is asked to contact Detective B. Beck by calling 302-365-8408. US 50 bridge closed west of Gunnison due to safety concerns

Travel advisory.

US 50 bridge crossing the Blue Mesa Reservoir near Dillon Pinnacles that is now closed

Gunnison and Montrose Counties  — A safety closure is in place for a bridge on US Highway 50 located west of Gunnison. The Colorado Department of Transportation is closing the bridge at the urging of the Federal Highway Administration and state bridge engineering experts due to the findings of an ongoing safety inspection, which identified anomalies in the bridge on Thursday, April 18. The closure is in place between US 50 Mile Point 131 (intersection with Colorado Highway 92) and MP 138. Local traffic will be allowed through the closure point to reach residences. Motorists should use COtrip to plan an alternate route. See below for more information about the northern and southern recommended alternate routes. CDOT has set up an incident command and will coordinate with local, state and federal agencies in order to respond as quickly and effectively as possible. CDOT has been conducting a special inspection for high-strength steel bridges for the Blue Mesa bridges as required by the Federal Highway Administration. This inspection was required because of known issues with similarly constructed bridges elsewhere in the country. A defect was observed during an early investigation of the bridge at approximately Mile Point 136.3. CDOT immediately brought in a second inspection crew with resources to perform another method for testing whether the defect posed a safety hazard on the bridge. The second inspection took place on Thursday, April 18.  CDOT is continuing to assess the safety of the bridge and to quickly determine options for interim and permanent fixes – and will keep the public informed as soon as more information is available. The bridge closure is located between Gunnison and Montrose. It is located east of the US 50 Little Blue Creek Canyon project, which is currently in a planned winter shutdown.

Recommended Alternate Routes

This closure will create a significant detour for commuters between Montrose and Gunnison. The recommended detour route for through traffic is via Interstate 70 to the north or US 160 to the south. CDOT understands the inconvenience that this creates and is rapidly evaluating options to improve options for residents, businesses, and travelers on the western slope. The northern route is 354 miles and requires approximately six hours of travel time. The southern route is 331 miles and requires nearly 7 hours of travel time. CDOT and local partners are exploring whether it is feasible at this point in the season to clear local seasonal routes that may be able to significantly reduce the detour time for local travelers.

Know Before You Go

Travelers are urged to “know before you go.” Gather information about weather forecasts and anticipated travel impacts and current road conditions prior to hitting the road. CDOT resources include:

  • Road conditions and travel information: COtrip.org
  • Download the COtrip Planner app: bit.ly/COtripapp
  • Sign up for project or travel alerts: bit.ly/COnewsalerts
  • See scheduled construction lane closures: bit.ly/laneclosures
  • Connect with @ColoradoDOT on social media: Twitter , Facebook , Instagram and YouTube

Remember: Slow For The Cone Zone

The following tips are to help you stay safe while traveling through maintenance and construction work zones.

  • Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
  • Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
  • Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
  • Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
  • Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
  • Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
  • Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
  • Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
  • Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
  • Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
  • Be patient!
