Greetings, I am having a problem with the cruise control on my 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 RST. At times, after shutting the engine off, upon restarting the engine, the cruise control light on the panel will not appear. If I am lucky, pressing the On-button will illuminate the cruise control icon and the cruise control can be set, generating a green icon. For the most part, it will work flawlessly at that point until I shut the engine off again. Upon engine restart, the unset cruise icon (white) may appear, or it may not. I think I can remember one time where the system totally shutdown (no white or green icon) while underway with the cruise control set, but no more than one time.

My Chevy Dealer has performed a diagnosis on the cruise control but has not been able to identify a problem. In fairness to the Dealer, the unit worked when they started the diagnosis and as make be expected, everything checked out okay. I am having a problem scheduling a Dealer appointment, having the unit in a failed mode and not re-engaging so he can check for error codes.

Checks so far: 1) “a broken brake pedal switch can also mean that your brake light is constantly on”. Blake lights are not constantly on and appear to be working properly.

2) “any power failure, blown fuse, or faulty relay, the system will not work”. Any power failure would have to be intermittent. A blown fuse would mean that the system would not work at any time. Faulty relay is a question and do not have a clue as to which one(s) to check.

3) “In addition to cruise control, a damaged speed sensor can affect your speedometer”. When operating, speed is maintained properly at the set speed and there are not any other indications of speedometer problems.

4) “If just one setting on your cruise control on/off switch isn’t working, the switch is most likely the problem”. When the unit is working properly, I can cut the unit on and off multiple times and it will still work properly. Switch appears to be working properly.

5) “If there is a leak, such as a broken pipe or a cracked pipe, the system will not work”. No checks performed at this time.

Cruise control reduces stress and fatigue on long drives, but if the system isn't working properly, it can become dangerous. If your vehicle's cruise control isn't working, one of the following nine issues may be the root cause.

How Cruise Control Works

Cruise control is a system to maintain vehicle speed without direct driver input. When you want to engage cruise control, you first turn the system “On” with a button or switch. However, this alone does not start the cruise control. When you “Set” cruising speed, the cruise control module (CCM) records the current speed, then takes control of the throttle body to maintain vehicle speed. When vehicle speed increases or decreases (due to wind or hills, for example), the CCM decreases or increases throttle body opening accordingly.

By modulating engine speed, the CCM can maintain your desired cruising speed on the highway. You can increase or decrease cruise speed by tapping a button or lever, and you can cancel cruise control by hitting the “Cancel” or “Off” buttons or stepping on the brake.

Throttle body control has changed over the years. Early systems used a vacuum motor and cable, but these eventually changed over to electric motors. Most recently, with the development of drive-by-wire or electronic throttle control systems (ETCS), cruise control is built into the engine control module (ECM), which controls the throttle body electronically.

Basic cruise control systems still require the driver to pay attention to changing road and traffic conditions. Adaptive cruise control systems, sometimes called "smart" cruise, use radar or laser detection to maintain safe distances from vehicles ahead. Some adaptive cruise control systems merely reduce engine speed to maintain distance, but some of the newest adaptive cruise control systems can also engage the brakes to slow or stop the vehicle. Still, even with adaptive cruise control, it's important that drivers never take their eyes off the road.

Why Is My Cruise Control Not Working?

There are a few basic ways that cruise control can fail, depending on how the system is designed. You may not be able to do much about ETCS cruise control systems, but there are a few things you can check:

Brake Light Switch – As cruise control is automatically cancelled by depressing the brake, some vehicles may disengage cruise control if it cannot detect the brake light switch.

Brake Lights – In some systems, cruise control is disabled when a brake light is blown. Aftermarket lighting, such as LED brake light conversion, might trick the CCM into thinking a brake light is blown, as LED bulbs draw less current than incandescent bulbs.

Fuses and Relays – On some vehicles, fuses and relays are used to protect the cruise control actuator circuit . If the fuse is blown or the relay is faulty, the system won’t work.

Spiral Cable – Many vehicles mount the cruise control switch on the steering wheel. A faulty spiral cable may have an open circuit, preventing the switch from contacting the CCM.

Control Switch – If the internal contacts wear out, the cruise control switch may not be able to contact the CCM. This might disable cruise control completely, or it might not react to the cancel or accelerate functions.

Check Engine Light – On some modern vehicles, particularly those equipped with ETCS, cruise control may be disabled if there is an engine or transmission problem .

Vacuum Leak – Some older vehicles used vacuum actuators to control the throttle body during cruise control operation. If there is a leak, such as a cracked hose or tube, the system won’t work. A vacuum leak might cause the engine to idler higher or set a fuel trim code.

Vehicle Speed Sensor – There are usually multiple vehicle speed sensors (VSS) on any given vehicle. The CCM might use a VSS feed from the ECM, instrument cluster, or transmission. If that signal is lost, the CCM can’t detect vehicle speed, disabling cruise control.

Electrical Problems – As most cruise control systems use electrical or electronic components, any diagnosis should include a thorough check of source voltage, wiring harnesses, and connectors. Anything loose or broken could disable the system entirely.

If your cruise control isn’t working properly, avoid using it until it is repaired. A faulty cruise control system may not cancel on demand, which will create a safety hazard for you and those around you. After assessing your cruise control yourself, take your vehicle to a trusted mechanic for a check or a couple diagnosis and repair.

Chevy Equinox: How to Use Cruise Control

Cruise control is a cool way to put your Chevy Equinox on autopilot, so to speak. In this setting, the vehicle can maintain speeds of 25mph or more without having to press the accelerator. However, it will not set at below 25mph.

In addition, the feature disconnects when the brake is applied. While this is a wonderful feature, be aware that cruise control can be dangerous on winding roads, in traffic, and on wet, slippery, or icy roads. With that being said, here are the steps to follow to set your Cruise Control.

Enable Cruise Control

Press the middle RES/+ button down to set your speed. The white icon will now turn Green indicating Cruise Control is Set and Active .
You can now take your foot off of the accelerator and ride.
Pressing the far left icon with an X or the brake will disengage the speed and will save the previous set speed.
To resume the previous speed, press RES/+ UP.
Press the bottom of the button to the right to turn the system OFF .

** If you are unable to activate this feature on the first try, REPEAT the steps. If you are still unsuccessful, contact the dealership for assistance or consult your vehicle user’s manual.

What causes cruise control to stop working in a vehicle?

I am now down the $3000 I’ve put into fixing this car and it’s various t leach bulletin reported issues, as well as out of a car now, due to warranty being expired, and still needing to make payments on this unsafe vehicle. I was driving on a busy rural route when I came to a stop , went to take off the car had no power. I have only had this vehicle 1 month, and the code says it it the transmission control module . Luckily we were not hit after about 30 seconds it kicks in and has power , not very safe at all .

Driving 75 miles per hour on interstate while passing two vehicles and one car behind me the car made a dinging noise, the adaptive cruise not available light illuminated and the car decelerated causing the car behind me to have to brake. If I had not stepped on the accelerator the car behind may have hit me. This has happened on four different dates and on one trip it happened 8 times in 80 miles. This is a safety hazard that could cause rear end collision at high speed. The repair shop at my chevy dealer in town says there are no error codes and the adaptive cruise is working as designed. Is I get hit from behind at high speed this could easily cause a devastating crash. I do not trust this car or the responses I am getting from the dealer. They say no one has complained about this but I kind find sites where people are reporting the same problem.

Complaint: owner states adaptive cruise control malfunctions without notice. Owner brought vehicle to local gm service department and vehicle was returned to customer as an unfounded complaint. Reporter found the following; all ipc indicators are functioning during self test, no ipc warning lights/messages present, distance following system appears to be functioning as designed and recognizes vehicles in its zone of influence. Reporter test drove vehicle with customers adas settings as dropped off. Adaptive cruise control did malfunction as customer indicated. Adaptive cruise control on engagement functioned as designed and then unexpectedly without warning failed. The most disturbing part of this fault is the only warning the system has failed is forward collision alarms. Secondly, the cruise control did not disengage upon this warning. If the prior were not enough, no ipc warnings or hard faults were recorded. This malfunction occurs unexpectedly at highway and local speeds. This fault, all the more worrisome, appears also to be either a programming error or transient. No other diagnostics were conducted. Supporting documents attached. Having personally owned adas equipped vehicles for over eight years and the confidence of using them without a problem this was a frightening experience for me and very concerning.
