Savannah Day Trip From Charleston Itinerary

Stop 1: gallery espresso.

tours from charleston sc to savannah ga

Our Savannah day trip from Charleston starts at Gallery Espresso for a cup of coffee (and possibly a pastry if you’re up for it — both their scones and croissants are legendary). Gallery’s eclectic décor is the perfect place to talk a little Savannah history.

Established in 1733, Savannah was the first state capital of Georgia. It was here that General James Oglethorpe landed in February of that year, naming Georgia after King George II of England. Not only was Savannah the first capital in Georgia, it was also the state’s first city.

Stop 2: Chippewa Square

tours from charleston sc to savannah ga

Savannah is known for its many squares. On a day trip to Savannah, you’ll easily see half a dozen squares — some with gorgeous fountains. Chippewa Square was named after the Battle of Chippewa, a victory for the U.S. in the War of 1812.

It’s also where Forest Gump sat and awaited his bus in the legendary titular movie. You may want to take your coffee here to enjoy some of the sights and sounds of the city before heading on to your next stop.

Stop 3: Historic District

If you’re doing a Charleston to Savannah day trip on your own, you might want to consider taking a tour of the Historic District . Here you’ll find dozens of parks, shops, restaurants, and historic homes. If you decide to go it alone, consider stopping at a few of the below sites.

Forsyth Park

tours from charleston sc to savannah ga

The next stop on our Savannah day trip from Charleston is Forsyth Park . Possibly one of the most well-recognized squares in Savannah, Forsyth Park offers visitors a glimpse at quiet southern living.

You’ll see plenty of tourists and locals crowded around the fountain on any given day, and it’s easy to see why: the large water feature was designed in the beaux art style and shoots water from all sides. It’s a popular spot for engagements. It’s also over 150 years old.

In addition to the fountain, there’s a large amphitheater, a fragrant garden for the blind as well as tennis and basketball courts.

Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

tours from charleston sc to savannah ga

No Charleston to Savannah day trip is complete without a stop at the Cathedral of St. the Baptist. This ornate French Gothic-style church was dedicated in 1876 and is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah. The interior is heavenly, and some of the features include stained glass windows, an organ loft, and flying buttresses.

Owens-Thomas House

tours from charleston sc to savannah ga

This Regency-style mansion was built in 1819 and was home to the shipping merchant and slave trader Richard Richardson. It was also the home of George Welshman Owens, former mayor of Savannah, in 1830.

Today the Owens Thomas House is used as a teaching tool to help visitors understand slavery in Savannah and the relationships between political powers in the 1800s. Exhibits include displays of decorative arts with docents who tell the stories of the families who once lived here.

Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace

Stop by the Juliette Gordon Low district to learn about the woman who started the Girl Scouts. Here, you’ll find three buildings dedicated to the first Girl Scouts headquarters, including the Wayne-Gorden House, the Andrew Low House, and its carriage house.

Stop 4: Lunch

All this history sure works up an appetite! Let’s take a break from our Savannah day trip. Luckily Savannah is known for its cuisine, and there are plenty of places to stop and enjoy a meal — at any price point.

Mrs. Wilkes

tours from charleston sc to savannah ga

If you’re feeling especially hungry, head to Mrs. Wilkes for a communal lunch consisting of fried chicken, sausage, beef stew and meatloaf — as well as an array of sides. If you’re planning on heading here, you’ll want to bring a big appetite with you. Otherwise, try out one of the spots below.

tours from charleston sc to savannah ga

This eclectic spot is known for its grab-and-go African comfort food. Their hefty sandwiches are legendary. The padkos (a sandwich that travels well and is meant for a long journey) are filled with a variety of toppings and topped with an ample amount of sauce. Wash it down with a South African sweet tea or a bottle of Yoo-hoo.

Narobia’s Grits & Gravy

If you want something fast and easy to fill up your belly, but you’re not feeling African cuisine, head to Narobia’s Grits & Gravy. This soul food outpost is known for its fried chicken, biscuits and (of course) its grits and gravy. Most dishes clock in at under $10 each, so you can fill up without emptying your wallet.

Stop 5: City Market

tours from charleston sc to savannah ga

If you’re not totally stuffed after lunch (and even if you are), a trip to City Market must be next on your list of must-do attractions. Established in the 1700s, this four-block open-air market offers plenty of shopping and classic Savannah charm.

Stop 6: River Street

tours from charleston sc to savannah ga

Keep walking along the waterfront on River Street . The cobblestone walkways line old cotton warehouses and make for a peaceful spot to walk off all those grits and biscuits. Along the way, you’ll pass by antique shops and art galleries.

Stop 7: American Prohibition Museum

tours from charleston sc to savannah ga

Our last stop on the Savannah day trip is the American Prohibition Museum.

Learn about the history of prohibition at the APM. You’ll discover the historical events that propelled prohibition into existence (and the events that led to its demise). If you’re not driving, head to the speakeasy for a prohibition-themed cocktail before you make your way back to Charleston.

On your way out of town, make sure to stop at the Bonaventure Cemetery. You’ll recognize it as the cemetery from the novel “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” Yet you won’t find the famous bird girl statue that was featured on the book jacket here anymore; it was moved after tourists began flocking here for photos.

Head north from Savannah and you’ll soon hit Charleston, South Carolina, another historical city where you can dine, shop, and take in the fresh sea air. For the longest time, I craved turning the two-hour drive from Charleston, SC to Savannah, GA into a week-long escapade. I’d previously visited these two gorgeous cities, and had become super curious about the Spanish-moss shrouded scenery that lies in between. Having now just returned, I can attest that the trip was epic and my heart feels warm just thinking about it.

This itinerary assumes it is your first time in both Savannah and Charleston, so has you spending extra time in these two cities. However, if you have visited either Charleston or Savannah before, feel free to reduce your time in either place. You can either add time to Beaufort in between, explore some tiny sea islands, or even take some additional day trips around either city.

Are you ready to get swept off your feet by endless beauty, history and folklore, as well as decadent Lowcountry cuisine? Without further delay, let’s get into this magnificent Charleston, SC to Savannah, GA one week road trip itinerary.

The Perfect Charleston, SC to Savannah, GA Road Trip Itinerary

Day 1: arrive in charleston.

Couple standing in front of pineapple fountain at waterfront park in Charleston SC

What you do on your first day will depend on your arrival time and energy level. If you’d like to hit the ground running, here are some things to do in Charleston in the evening:

  • Take a carriage ride
  • Take a walking tour. You can typically find Charleston pub tours and ghost tours that run in the evening.
  • Catch a show at the Dock Street Theatre
  • If there’s still daylight, get lost admiring the gorgeous homes south of Broad Street.

Day 2: Explore Charleston

Your first full day in Charleston will include a sightseeing walk, foodie spots, and top historical sites.

Sightseeing Walk

Girl in jeans and denim button up in front of colorful pastel rainbow row in Charleston SC during road trip to Savannah GA

On your first day in Charleston take a sightseeing walk past some of the best sites in the “Holy City”. This easygoing walking tour I created is two miles long and takes about forty minutes to complete without stops.

Below are all the sights you will pass, in order. For more detail on all of them, check out my 3 Days in Charleston Itinerary .

  • Charleston City Market
  • Philadelphia Alley
  • Waterfront Park
  • Rainbow Row
  • The Battery
  • Church Street
  • “Four Corners of Law”

Lunch in Charleston

Pink exterior of Magnolia's restaurant - Charleston SC to Savannah GA

After a morning of walking, take a lunch break. Try Fleet Landing for comforting seafood dishes on the water or Magnolia’s for Southern sophistication.

Explore Charleston’s Historical Sites

Stone exterior of Old Slave Mart in Charleston

After lunch, tour a historical site (or two). Here are a few top choices to consider, which only take about an hour to tour:

  • Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon : Built in 1771, this building has served as a custom house, commercial exchange, and more under several governments.
  • Powder Magazine : Notable as South Carolina’s oldest government building, where gunpowder was once stored during the 18th century.
  • Old Slave Mart : Thought to be the last surviving indoor slave auction space in South Carolina, and often staffed by descendants of former slaves. While the exhibits are mostly posters to read, the information is evocative and moving.

Dine Out in Charleston

Front porch of Husk on Queen Street - Charleston SC to Savannah GA road trip

End your day by dining at one of Charleston‘s best restaurants. I highly recommend making a reservation in advance for either Circa 1886 , FIG , or Husk .

All serve upscale southern fare, but Circa 1886 and Husk both have more romantic atmospheres . That said, FIG has my favorite food of the three. All three require a reservation at least a month in advance, or it can be near impossible to get a table.

Day 3: More Charleston Adventures

On your second day, dive deeper into Charleston’s history and further explore the awesome foodie scene.

Ferry to Fort Sumter

Brick facade of Fort Sumter seen from the water on the ferry ride over

One of the most popular sightseeing opportunities is taking the ferry to Fort Sumter . First, the ferry ride delivers great views of Charleston‘s waterfront along the Cooper River. Next, you will get to tour Fort Sumter, which is where the first shots of the Civil War were fired.

The ferry and tour of Fort Sumter cost $32 and it takes about two hours and fifteen minutes in total ( book your tickets here ) . During your visit, you’ll receive a history presentation from a park ranger, and have free range to explore the entire site at your leisure.

Shops on King Street

King Street lined with palmetto trees in Charleston, SC during road trip to Savannah, GA

During the afternoon, take a leisurely stroll to peruse the shops on King Street, or Charleston’s main shopping thoroughfare. You’ll see everything from high-end local boutiques to every day stores you’d find at the mall. It can be very difficult to keep your wallet in check, so be prepared!

If you need a bite to eat along the way, I recommend a delightful biscuit snack from either Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit in the City Market or Handy and Hot .

Take a Food Tour

Bacon appetizer hanging from clothes pins during food tour - Charleston SC to Savannah GA road trip

Top off your second day in Charleston with a Lowcountry food tour. I recently did this food tour here , and it was totally unique from similar culinary tours I’ve done. Not only did we try a sampling of the city’s more popular dishes, but we also learned the history of each dish, as well as the origin of its ingredients.

The tour provides plenty of food over two and a half hours, but it does end before dinnertime. If you get hungry again and want a break from heavy food, Basic Kitchen offers hearty clean-eating options.

Charleston, SC to Beaufort, SC

Day 4: drive to beaufort.

On Wednesday, you will make your drive to Beaufort, SC, which is a charming small town on Port Royal Island about halfway between Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA. Driving to Beaufort takes around an hour and forty minutes. Therefore, you’ll have time for additional exploring in and around Charleston before heading south.

Sightsee Around Charleston

Folly Beach Pier on James Island - Charleston SC to Savannah GA road trip

If you haven’t had the chance to check out any of Charleston’s historic house museums, I recommend visiting one before leaving. Here are the top options to consider:

  • Aiken-Rhett House
  • Nathaniel Russell House
  • Heyward-Washington House

Alternatively, you could check out of your hotel and drive to a nearby plantation. There are several choices, including Drayton Hall , Magnolia Plantation , Middleton Place , and Boone Hall .

Having already been to all the above mentioned, I drove out to James Island to explore McLeod Plantation . No joke – this is where I received the best presentation on slavery and reconstruction than I’ve had on any other plantation tour. Don’t expect a plush house and garden overview – the passionate guide tells a complete history of the property and glosses over nothing.

Afterwards, I drove to the Folly Beach Pier for lunch before taking a serene beach walk to view the Morris Island Lighthouse.

Dine in Downtown Beaufort

Tacos on metal tray at Lost Local in Beaufort, SC

Upon arrival in Beaufort there will be plenty of little eateries to check out in the historic downtown. I was happy to be meeting up with my friend Anna for this portion of the trip. Our first stop was Lost Local for a delicious variety of tacos and margaritas (especially the spicy margarita).

Day 5: Explore Beaufort

Girl standing under giant live oak branches outside Beaufort, South Carolina - charleston sc to savannah ga road trip

Although Beaufort is a small town compared to Charleston and Savannah, there is plenty to see in just one day. I recommend rising early to visit as many sights as possible.

Spanish Moss Trail

Spanish Moss Trail walking and biking path surrounded by marshy river water near Beaufort

Begin your day in Beaufort with a pleasant walk along the Spanish Moss Trail . But first, coffee.

Stop by Herban Market and Cafe right in town for a latte or other beverage of your choosing. This relaxed, airy space is covered in shiplap and features an array of fresh pastries and espresso drinks. On a nice day, linger on the patio for gorgeous river views.

Now, bring your coffee along for a leisurely walk along the Spanish Moss Trail. This 10-mile route is a also a popular bike path, and is still under expansion. When complete, it will stretch 16 miles from Beaufort to Port Royal.

Explore Beaufort

Next, spend your afternoon taking a walking tour of Beaufort to get a lay of the land and learn the town’s history. If you prefer to wander on your own, there are plenty of adorable shops and eateries to check out at your own pace.

Sightsee Around Beaufort

Frampton Plantation House outside Beaufort SC

There are also amazing sights on the outskirts of Beaufort that deserve your time. Although it was raining for our entire stay, we found a small dry window to run out and do some sightseeing.

Here are the sights worth seeing around Beaufort:

  • Sheldon church ruins: the brick skeleton of a 19th century church burnt down during the Civil War.
  • Frampton Plantation: a former plantation turned visitors center. There are some artifacts inside and beautiful oaks in the yard outside. You can also find the remnants of a dirt fortification made by General Robert E. Lee’s troops during the Civil War.
  • Saint Helena Parish Chapel of Ease Ruins: See the remaining walls of a 1740 chapel on St. Helena Island. The chapel once served parishioners who had difficulty traveling to Beaufort’s main church.
  • Penn Center: Also on St. Helena Island, the Penn School was one of the first to serve formerly enslaved people.

Dinner in Beaufort

Pizzas in dark lit restaurant on wooden table

It’s time to select another great dining option in downtown Beaufort. You can’t go wrong with either Hearth Wood Fired Pizza or Old Bull Tavern . While they are both cozy, popular gastropub Old Bull Tavern requires reservations for the best chance of getting a table.

Beaufort, SC to Savannah, GA

Day 6: drive to savannah.

Today you will begin the final leg of your road trip. First, do one last stop around Beaufort before heading south towards Savannah. Before you depart, grab a coffee and light breakfast from Urban Brew + Co .

Hunting Island State Park

sea foam washed ashore at Hunting Island State Park during a Charleston SC to Savannah GA road trip

Hunting Island State Park is a beautiful nature preserve outside Beaufort with a pristine, remote beach. It’s the perfect spot to catch the sunrise, and you can also view the Hunting Island Lighthouse. I happened to also see my first small alligator in a pond by the visitors center.

Entry to the park costs $8, which is a little higher than most other South Carolina state parks. Thankfully, our Airbnb provided an SC State Park pass for our use that covered the fee.

Sightsee Around Savannah

giant live oaks leading to Wormsloe Historic Site

Continue taking advantage of having a car at your disposal by driving to popular sights around Savannah:

  • Tybee Beach : sandy beach located just 30 minutes outside of Savannah. There are plenty of little eateries and cafes nearby. You might prefer to leave Beaufort early and come here instead of Hunting Island, or visit both like I did. Keep in mind that all parking is paid around Tybee, and you will need to buy tickets at machines along the streets.
  • Wormsloe Historic Site : where you can find the ruins of an old tabby house that are considered to be the oldest structure in Georgia. The 400 live oaks leading up to the entrance will leave you awestruck, but prepare for a bumpy ride. Additionally, while slavery did once exist at the site, info covering the subject is scant.

Evening in Savannah

View of Savannah at night from the Peregrin Rooftop Lounge

Next, drive into Savannah and find parking, which once again, is all paid. Your hotel might have a garage and valet, but this can be super expensive in Savannah. I’ve seen up to $40/day quoted!

That’s one big reason why I stayed at the Eliza Thompson House on picture-perfect Jones Street. I was able to find street parking and paid $15/day for a parking pass from the hotel. The only thing I needed to consider was parking on the correct side of the road to avoid weekly street sweepers.

For dinner on your first night in Savannah, make reservations well in advance for The Olde Pink House . Known for its pink exterior, this restaurant is both historic and elegant. Alternatively, Gallery Espresso is a cozy coffee house that serves sandwiches and salads if you want something simpler.

Day 7: Explore Savannah

Fountain at Forsyth Park during sunrise

Hit the ground running for your one full day in Savannah . Wake up early on a sunny morning to make it to Forsyth park while the sun is rising. Trust me – the fountain looks magical during golden hour.

Next, go get some breakfast. The Eliza Thompson House serves a great breakfast already, so I didn’t veer during my stay. However you could also get a delicious pastry at a local café, like Asher + Rye or have a sit down brunch at Collins Quarter . Collins Quarter conveniently has a location right at Forsyth Park, or you can check out their Bull Street spot nearby.

Bonaventure Cemetery

A lifelike stone monument in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah GA

Take a morning tour of Bonaventure cemetery. Even though I had a car, my tour provided the transportation, so I didn’t have to worry about losing my parking spot.

This particular tour was awesome because the guide did a deep dive into the history of so many different monuments around the cemetery. He is a fifth or sixth generation resident of Savannah and has great insight into the city. Doing a tour of Bonaventure on your own is not a great idea, as the cemetery is huge and there are not informational placards for a self-guided tour.

Book Your Bonaventure Cemetery Tour Here

At noon you will head back to Savannah, which only takes about 15 minutes. At this point, take a short pause for lunch. Some great options include Fox & Fig Cafe for tasty vegan food or Treylor Park for southern food with a fresh, creative twist.

Explore Savannah Historical Sites

burnt orange exterior of the Owens-Thomas House in Savannah

Spend the afternoon exploring various historical sights in Savannah . Most are nearby one another and super easy to pop in for a tour at the last minute. I recommend seeing the following in this order:

  • 2:00pm – Savannah Cathedral : If there is not service taking place, visit Savannah Cathedral , or The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, to view its gothic interior. It is worth noting that Catholics were banned in Savannah’s original charter, and that this was the town’s first Catholic congregation. The basilica recommends visitors make an optional donation of $3.
  • 2:30pm – Congregation Mickve Israel : Tour Congregration Mickve Israel to learn about the 3rd oldest Jewish congregation in the United States and see the oldest Torah in the western hemisphere. You do not need to be Jewish to enjoy this tour. Being somewhat ignorant to the religion’s history myself, I found learning about early Jewish colonists to be completely fascinating. In fact, these individuals were instrumental to Savannah’s initial survival as a colony.
  • 4:00pm – House Museum : Your Mickve Israel tour might run over like mine did, so plan to do a Savannah house museum tour at 4pm. One great option is the Owens-Thomas House , which has the best tour through the slave quarters I’ve experienced in Savannah. Additionally, you could tour the Andrew Low House to learn about the family of the woman that went on to start the Girl Scouts of America.

Ice Cream from Leopold’s

Scoop of Leopold's Ice Cream in cup

After all these activities, take a break for some ice cream from Leopold‘s on Broughton St., which has satisfied many a sweet tooth since 1919. I have high standards for ice cream and was initially skeptical about waiting in a line out the door for a potential tourist trap. Thankfully, I was wrong, as my generous scoop of honey almond & cream was super smooth and rich with flavor.

Savannah Ghost Tour

Hamilton-Turner Inn lit up at night during ghost tour

End you full day in Savannah with dinner and a ghost tour in whichever order you please. This ghost tour I took , which came highly recommend from my Bonaventure Cemetery guide, runs at both 6pm and 8pm.

I loved how the tour was rooted in actual historical events around Savannah, which are the basis for many an urban legend. Plus, you don’t need to put stock into fictional tales to believe the city is creepy or haunted, with many of today’s structures having been built on top of grave sites.

Book Your Savannah Ghost Tour Here

Unfortunately, my hotel was one of our haunted stops on the tour. I experienced no strange happenings, but I did lose sleep thinking about it. Thank goodness for garbage television (aka Love Island) getting me through the night.

Afterwards, dine along the riverfront at Vic’s On the River for one last elegant taste of Southern hospitality. The she crab soup and shrimp and grits are a must.

Departure Day

After an invigorating journey from Charleston, SC to Savannah, GA, it’s time to return home. If you have a rental car and would like to fly out from Savannah, you need to make sure a point to point car rental is allowed.

I personally rented from Budget in downtown Charleston and returned my car to the Charleston airport. This wasn’t too much of a hassle, being that Charleston and Savannah are so close to each other.

I made sure to get an afternoon flight to give myself plenty of time to drive in the morning.

Renting a Car for a Road Trip from Charleston, SC to Savannah, GA

View of the Morris Island Lighthouse from Folly Beach in Charleston, SC during a road trip to Savannah GA

If you are flying into Charleston instead of driving your own car, you will need a rental car to get to Beaufort and then Savannah. As parking in Charleston is quite expensive, I recommend not picking up any rental cars until you absolutely need to.

I personally didn’t pick up my rental car until Day 3, when it was time to drive to Beaufort. I simply saved any sightseeing outside downtown Charleston until that day, and was able to easily fit a couple stops in before driving south.

It only takes an hour and forty minutes or so to reach Beaufort from Charleston. Driving from Beaufort to Savannah takes about an hour.

If you also want to avoid paying a pretty penny to park in Savannah, see if you can rent from a company that allows you to drop your car off at the Savannah airport. The drawback is that you would then need to Uber or taxi back into Savannah, and then back to the airport again for your departure. The money you save might not ultimately be enough to make it worth the hassle.

Where to Stay During a Charleston, SC to Savannah, GA Road Trip

Here are a few hotels in both Charleston and Savannah that I personally enjoyed. I would highly recommend any of the below to those of you who seek both charming and well-located lodging:

Charleston Hotels

Street view strolling past the rainbow row on E Bay Street

Charleston has so many awesome hotel choices, although they can be pricey. The Indigo Inn and Hotel Emeline are ideally located near some of Charleston’s best restaurants and within easy walking distance to the shops on King Street. The Vendue is located right next to the Waterfront Park and close to popular restaurants like Husk and Magnolias .

Savannah Hotels

Maroon stairs leading up to the Eliza Thompson House in Savannah GA

In Savannah, stay in the gorgeous historic center near the squares or along the waterfront. Two recommended hotels are Marshall House and the Eliza Thompson House . Marshall House is located on Broughton Street, or one of Savannah’s best shopping streets. The Eliza Thompson House is located on picturesque Jones Street, which is lined with dreamy mansions and giant live oaks draped in Spanish moss.

If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Southern Charms: Savannah,Charleston & Hilton Head   tour is relaxed and the pace is leisurely. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. Some of the historic homes and plantations we visit are centuries old and have been preserved in their natural setting. The motor coaches are not always allowed to drive directly to the front entrance. Some of the excursions involve a considerable amount of walking and many steps. A few of the historic sites that we visit are not wheelchair accessible.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs. The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

Temperatures in Georgia and South Carolina average 65 to 80°F (18 to 27°C) during the spring and fall months and 70 to 95°F (21 to 35°C) during the summer months. The heat index rises from moderate in spring and fall to high in summer, when rainfall is significant.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

The weather in southeastern U.S. in spring and fall is warm and somewhat humid; in summer the weather is hot and humid. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions a jacket with/without tie is recommended, for all other functions casual resort wear is appropriate. Some hotel dining rooms request that guests not wear tennis shoes, and that men wear a jacket for dinner.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription, or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your tour of Charleston and Savannah:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • A jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Day Trip to Savannah from Charleston: 6 Things to do in Georgia’s Prettiest City

May 1, 2022 April 26, 2019 | Paroma

Savannah, Georgia is an easy day trip from Charleston , South Carolina with a mere 2 hours separating these two southern cities. This gorgeous city boasts of ethereal Spanish Moss welcoming you from every tree branch, beautiful parks and squares dotted with fountains to add to the greenery. Plus, lots of art museums and good places to eat for your fill on culture and cuisine even for a few short hours on a Savannah day trip .

There are many things to do on a day trip to Savannah and although a mere 6-8 hours is not enough to see everything that the city has to offer, it is good stretch of time to get a taste of this popular southern destination which much like Charleston, is a regular feature on some of the prettiest cities in America to visit. So here are some fun suggestions for your Savannah itinerary on how to spend 6-8 hours on your day trip to Savannah from Charleston to make it a memorable one.

Savannah day trip, what to do in Savannah, Savannah attractions, best things to see in Georgia's prettiest city

Savannah day trip: Explore the Historic district

Much like Charleston , Savannah too boasts of some colonial architectural wonders and you can see them on full regal display in the historic district. These homes are punctuated by beautiful, manicured gardens, green parks with towering oaks laden with Spanish Moss swooshing in the air, squares with fountains spouting water, churches, museums and some very delicious spots to grab a bite.

This is also the largest National Historic Landmark District in USA and since a day trip to Savannah is not enough to take everything in, I highly suggest walking down Oglethorpe Avenue, Bull street and Liberty street which are buzzing with scenic views, boutique stores and restaurants alongside charming Savannah homes and gardens.

Savannah's historic district is filled with amazing architecture and is a prime attraction for your day trip to Savannah from Charleston

Things to do in Savannah on a day trip:  Chippewa Square & Forsyth Park

When in Savannah, you are never too far away from a park or a square (kind of like when in San Francisco, you are always near the water), but if I were to pick those one or two prime spots for you to go on your short day trip to Savannah , then those unquestionably will be the famous Chippewa Square and Forsyth park , both of which have Bull street running alongside them.

Fans of the celluloid and Tom Hanks will recall Chippewa square being one of the backdrops of the famous Hollywood Movie “ Forrest Gump ” where Forrest (played by Mr. Hanks) sits on a bench in this park with a box of chocolates on his lap, uttering the famous line “Life was like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get”.

The bench used in the movie was actually a prop but you can easily recreate that scene by buying some of the most delicious chocolates known to humankind and made right in Savannah from “ Chocolat by Adam Turoni ” store right on Bull street.

The store is a visual delight as well and created like a library where instead of books, you pick your own chocolate truffles to create customized boxes. Chippewa square, so named after the victory of the American forces over the British in the 1814 victory of the Battle of Chippewa fought in upper Canada, was built in 1815 and features the French made statue of James Oglethorpe, the founder of the colony of Georgia. For those staying in Savannah, the Mansion on Forsyth park is an excellent hotel to rest your achy feet.

Savannah Day trip: visit Chippewa square

Forsyth park is another famous spot of greenery in Savannah and an excellent place to see spring blooms. This park sprawls over 30 acres of land and is named after another famous governor of the state, John Forsyth.

The main attraction of the park is the Forsyth fountain modeled after the ones in Place de la Concorde in Cuzco, Peru and installed in 1858 on the North end of the park. Forsyth park comes alive on Saturdays with Farmers market and is home to the Savannah Jazz festival along with free movies at the park and other events and festivals year round.

Day trip to Savannah from Charleston: Visit Mercer-Williams House

Mercer-Williams House , now converted to a museum is another must visit spot for cinephiles since this is where the story of the shooting of owner Jim Williams’ assistant Danny Hansford was retold in the 1994 classic movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (based on its namesake book by John Berendt ) directed by Clint Eastwood with Kevin Spacey in the lead role as Mr. Williams.

The construction that began under the watch of the New Yorker architect John Norris for General Hugh Weedon Mercer (who never got to live in the house as did no other Mercer) was interrupted due to the civil war and was finally completed in 1868 by then owner John Wilder.

The house was used by Savannah Shriners Alee temple and then left neglected for a decade till it was scooped up Jim Williams, one of the most famous private restorationists of Georgia who was also known to be quite a collector of antiques.

Although Mr. Williams faced four trials for the death (by shooting) of his assistant Danny Lewis Hansford in this very home, he was finally acquitted and died quite unexpectedly of pneumonia in this very home in 1990 at the age of 58, six months after the fourth trial.

The house is currently owned by his sister and is open to the public via tours. Our tour guide did an excellent job of walking us through Mr. Williams’ opulent lifestyle, amply reflected in his collections and home decor that have been very well preserved.

Photography is sadly not permitted in the gardens as well as inside the house. This tour takes about 40 minutes, starting from the gift shop which is also where you buy tickets, and is a great way to get a sneak peek into the lives of Savannah elite, with all the intrigue and drama worthy of a Hollywood movie.

What to do on a Savannah day trip: Walk down the Savannah Riverfront

The paved plaza and waterfront flanking the Savannah river is accessible from River street and is a great place to walk and take in the sights of the many art installations along the way while enjoying the cool river breeze. There are several signs here explaining the history of Georgia, the shared heritage of slavery with South Carolina and the role of this colony in the confederacy and the American Civil war.

Although we did not have to time to walk all the way from one end to another thanks to a coveted lunch reservation, I highly recommend stopping by the famous Waving Girl statue built after Florence Martus , who was the unofficial greeter of all ships entering and leaving the port of Savannah from 1887-1931.

One day in Savannah itinerary: Explore the City Market

We stumbled upon this lively, open air city market (dates back to the 18th century) while aimlessly wandering through the city in search of a good afternoon pick-me up.  There are lots of different local stores here, one of them being the Georgia tasting room featuring a wide variety of local and regional wines. This market has lots of great art stores featuring local artists and restaurants to grab a bite to eat for when you are hungry after all that shopping.

I loved the quirky mural outside of the Prohibition museum here, depicting how women in Georgia (evangelical Protestants) were instrumental in passing the law against alcohol sale and consumption ( from 1908 to 1935) by looking down upon it as immoral and sinful;  another perfect example of a disastrous faith based public policy which obviously got a prompt thumbs down from me:-)

Eating out in Savannah: Grab a bite and a drink (or, two)

Savannah is equally famous for all its popular and tasty dining spots, and The Collins Quarter in the historic district is certainly one of them. We had a lip-smacking brunch at this place which focuses on southern food with an Australian (yes, you read it right) flair on a very busy Sunday morning. Our wait time was about an hour since we did not have reservations but the food was worth the wait.

Cliche as it may sound, I did not want to leave Georgia without a mint julep and sadly for us, the famous Alley Cat Lounge (literally in an alley) bar was closed, so I ended up having one at Prohibition restaurant and Bar, who not only make a mean mint julep but also have the entire Savannah historic timeline painted out on the very top of the bar wall above the liquor cabinets.

A lack of prior reservation also prevented us from dining at Chef Mashama Bailey’s The Grey restaurant (a stylish dig with southern fare), but we did manage to bring our Savannah day trip to a delicious end by dining at Churchill’s, a British tavern and pub with a impressive list of craft beers, India inspired food as well as some traditional favorites such as fish and chips.

Extras for your day trip to Savannah: Museums and tours

Since we only had about 6-8 hours in Savannah, we naturally had to give quite a few things a miss, one of them being all the art museums in the historic district. In terms of art, Savannah is most well known for being home to SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) that provides more degree programs and specializations than any other of its kind.

SCAD also has international campuses in France ( Lacoste, which I visited in 2017 ) and Hong Kong. The SCAD Museum of Art in the historic district in Savannah is a contemporary arts museum featuring emerging international artists. If you have extra time on your hands, I highly recommend spending some time at the museum since I loved what I saw in SCAD Lacoste. I want to visit both of these cities. We were supposed to drive from Florida to Washington DC the last time we were in the states and had planned to stay in both Savannah and Charleston, but a hurricane caused us to redirect and drive to Chicago instead. After reading this, the desire to get there is back.

Savannah looks so gorgeous! I’d love to get there some day. Loving your photos as always!

Savannah is one place I’ve always been curious about. You’ve convinced me I need to add to my bucket list of places to visit. The town looks so picturesque and there’s lots of history. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I haven’t tried dining in both at The Collins Quarter and Prohibition restaurant and Bar. I will add it to my list of things to do in savannah ga before we head over by November. I also keep myself up to date through https://www.visitsavannah.com/things-to-do .

Discovering the coastal Low Country Location Information Description

Today you'll embark on a guided excursion through the Low Country region along the Georgia coast. Begin with an opportunity to experience firsthand the unique Gullah / Geechee culture that developed in the wetlands approaching the outlying Sea Islands of Georgia at the Pin Point Heritage Museum. Occupying a former oyster and crab processing factory in the community of Pin Point on the banks of the Moon River south of Savannah that offers amazing views of the wetlands, the museum's exhibits and multimedia presentations interpret the oyster fishing traditions and folkways of the residents of Pin Point – which for nearly a century survived as an isolated, self-sustaining Gullah / Geechee enclave founded by first-generation free people of color, whose lives were deeply connected to the water. Continue through the marshlands and past old Spanish fortifications to Wormsloe State Historic Site on the outskirts of Savannah, where a winding rural avenue lined by more than 400 live oak trees leads to the remains of Georgia's oldest plantation and its original "tabby" house, now complemented by a museum, theatre and Colonial Life area.

Return to Savannah for a free afternoon, followed by two Tauck Exclusives. The first is a celebration of the city’s Madeira wine traditions at the Davenport House Museum, featuring a tour and a tasting in the historic home's private gardens. Then enjoy Tauck's exclusive after-hours admission to the National Museum of the Mighty 8th Air Force for a private tour of its exhibits chronicling the famed US Eighth Bomber Command's contributions to the Allied victory in World War II and beyond, and a private dinner in the museum's reception hall.

The rest of the day is free to do as you please; Charleston is a great city to explore by foot, or you might decide to see it by horsedrawn carriage; other ideas are visiting the Gibbes Museum of Art, or Fort Sumter National Monument, where the first shot of the Civil War was fired in 1861. And of course there are many restaurants and cafés at which to enjoy the easy living this city is so well known for.

Grand plantations & gardens Location Information Description

Admission to Charleston Tea Plantation

The  Charleston Tea Plantation  is located on historic Wadmalaw Island in the heart of the Lowcountry of South Carolina.  We're just a few miles south of the historic city of  Charleston. The history of the Island dates back to mid-June of 1666 when it is believed that Captain Robert Sanford and the crew of the Berkeley Bay landed on the shores of what is now known as Rockville, South Carolina. On June 23, 1666, he and his crew claimed the land for England and the Lords Proprietors. Today, Wadmalaw is considered to be one of Charleston's most unspoiled islands. It is approximately 10 miles long and 6 miles wide. The Island's only connection to the mainland is a bridge that crosses over Church Creek.

Day 1 : Fly to South Carolina

Upon arriving in Charleston, we check in for a wonderful three-night stay.

Day 2 : Charleston

Our day begins with a tour of Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, founded in 1676 by the Drayton family. Enjoy time to explore the beautiful gardens and grounds independently before our guided tour of the 19th-century mansion. After a fantastic Welcome Lunch with new friends, we embark on a nostalgic horse-drawn carriage ride through historic downtown Charleston. Take in sights of lovely greenery, quaint houses, mansions, parks, and churches as we trot through several blocks of the “Holy City.” Our last stop is Patriot’s Point Naval & Maritime Museum, which includes the opportunity to view an impressive piece of American history: the USS Yorktown . We then return to the hotel for an evening at leisure.

Day 3 : Fort Sumter

This morning, we relax on a cruise to Fort Sumter. A National Park Service Ranger joins us at the sea fort in the middle of Charleston Harbor to share many impactful stories, including how the Battle of Fort Sumter marked the beginning of the Civil War. Later today, we visit the Charleston Museum to view exhibits such as Becoming Americans: Charleston in the Revolution, The Armory: Revolutionary and Civil War Weaponry, and City Under Siege: Charleston in the Civil War. The remainder of the day is yours to pursue personal interests.

Day 4 : Savannah

This morning we arrive in Savannah and begin the day with a city tour by trolley. Take in the beautiful sights as our comfortable ride takes us into the old Historic District, filled with restored buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Enjoy picturesque waterfronts, once the location of cotton warehouses and now hotels, restaurants, and shops. Next, delight in a riverboat luncheon cruise down the Savannah River and kick back to feast upon scrumptious Southern fare with a buffet of signature regionally-celebrated shrimp and grits, Southern fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, sweet potato soufflé, Southern greens, and more. This afternoon we visit Old Fort Jackson, Georgia’s oldest standing brick fort. Revel in the opportunity to take part in an exciting cannon demonstration that uses some of the oldest artillery in the Southeast United States. Later, we check in to our Savannah hotel.

Day 5 : Savannah at Leisure & Cooking Class

Delight in a leisurely morning to relax or explore as you wish. Our afternoon kicks off with lunch on your own at the Savannah City Market, a historic marketplace filled with some of Savannah’s most popular restaurants, art galleries, shops, and more. Later, a fun cooking class at Chef Darin’s Kitchen Table awaits! Team up with other guests to prepare a fresh batch of delicious pralines as we learn this renowned cuisine’s history.

Day 6 : Atlanta

Today, we say goodbye to the old-time charm of Savannah and head west to Georgia’s vibrant capital city, Atlanta. Arriving early afternoon, our first stop is the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum. Dive into the life and legacy of our country’s 39th president while browsing impressive exhibits, such as a life-size replica of the Oval Office. Later, we check in to our Atlanta accommodations and have the evening free to explore the city’s incredible cuisine.

Day 7 : Georgia Aquarium

Enjoy a morning at Georgia Aquarium, one of the largest aquariums in the world. Explore seven massive galleries featuring hundreds of species, from bottlenose dolphins and hammerhead sharks to African penguins and California sea lions. Following lunch on your own at the historic Ponce City Market, we stop at Centennial Olympic Park, a 22-acre park honoring Georgia’s legacy of the 1996 Summer Olympics. Enjoy time to pursue personal interests and independently see more of the city’s most famous attractions! Great choices include the World of Coca-Cola World, Atlanta Botanical Garden, College Football Hall of Fame, and SkyView Atlanta. After returning to the hotel, there’s time to freshen up and relax before this evening’s Farewell Dinner to celebrate our wonderful vacation.

Charleston, South Carolina

Welcome aboard! The Last Mango takes us to extraordinary places and we want to share these places with all of you! The Last Mango blog will take a deep dive into sharing our Last Mango life with our Last Mango family! We are excited for you to board with us on this journey while we share our favorite places to rest, dine and free spool during our cruise up and down the east coast and even, throughout the world. So, let’s cruise darlin’; we are about to board the Last Mango blog!

If you do not know much about our trips, they consist of up to a week of stops from the Bahamas to as far as Nantucket and many places in between. Each day the boat travels for up to fourteen hours & then stops at night for a bubble bath, rest, food and sometimes we top it off with a stroll through the beautiful areas the Last Mango takes us!

One of our first stops and one of our favorites on the east coast is Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston is known for its beautiful downtown and its coastal southern charm.

While in Charleston, we switch up our lodging from time to time. A few of our favorite places are The Lindy Renasissance Charleston Hotel and Planters Inn .

The Lindy Renasissance Charleston Hotel

The Lindy is known for its uniqueness with its eclectic designs while still maintaining the traditional South Carolina charisma of holding onto the history of this beautiful city. The hotel displays art from many local artists throughout different areas including the rooms. There is a library in the lobby that is a must see with local feather bowties on display. If the cookies are out for sharing, do not sleep on them – you must try one…or two!

Planters Inn is a one of a kind luxury boutique hotel that combines elegance with its southern style in the heart of the historic district of Charleston. Originally built in 1844 as a dry goods store, this architectural treasure of a hotel is the only hotel throughout the United Stated furnished with décor from Bakers’ Historic Charleston Collection. The first thing you should ask walking over the threshold is how to get a slice of the decadent coconut cake…you will forever be hooked!

We often get asked how is the food during your travel through the east coast. Before the question is finishing being asked, our answer is “HANK’S!” There are a few other stops that we answer while saying Hank’s but more to come on that at a later time.

“Hank’s” otherwise known as the World Famous Hank’s Seafood Restaurant is an absolute must while in Charleston. Not only is the food some of the best in the world but Hank Holliday is a dear friend of Jimmy’s. Their friendship was a fun one especially when they were talking about fishing & food. If one thing is for certain, Hank knows how to incorporate fishing into food! From the moment you walk in, you feel as if you are walking into home; from the staff to the décor. Hank’s has a great bar for your happy hour excursions and the bartenders are mixing up the best drinks in the business. Pro tip: When you arrive, take a look on the right-hand side wall for a special greeting!

Hank’s Seafood Restaurant

While choosing your dining preferences, you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. Some of our top favorites include the Hank’s seasonal salad, Charleston she crab soup, roast grouper, sautéed lump crab cakes, fried shrimp platter & the fried green tomatoes are a must. We always change up our desserts, as that is a part of the toughest choices of our dining experiences but this time we had the chocolate peanut butter parfait & it was worth every bite!

Hank's roast grouper

Also owned by Hank, you cannot go wrong dining at the Peninsula Grill . This restaurant pulls out all the stops from the setting and the atmosphere to the drinks, food and dessert; it is a restaurant that is the crown jewel of the dining scene. Some of our favorites include the burrata salad, pan seared diver scallops, the goat cheese smashed potatoes and the roasted mushrooms. When asked if you will be enjoying a dessert following your meal, repeat these two words immediately…” coconut cake!”. You can thank us later.

Peninsula Grill

If you are looking for a more casual dining scene, look no further than Lewis Barbecue . When you try the barbecue at Lewis’s , you feel as if you are at an amazing backyard barbecue including the covered patio above the picnic benches, the lunch trays and the family type atmosphere. During this stop, our favorites included the sliced USDA prime beef brisket, pulled pork, green chile cheddar sausage creamy potato salad and the mac and cheese. They offer a happy hour from 4pm – 6 pm, Monday through Friday. If you cannot make it to Charleston to visit in person, they offer the option to ship nationwide so you do not have to miss out. There are no corners cut here!

Lewis Barbecue

During our trips and after our dinners, we like to venture out for some night sights in the scenic places the Last Mango takes us. Downtown Charleston is known for its picturesque historic buildings, its exclusive shopping & its delectable food all surrounded by beautiful waterways.

Our first stop was at Savannah’s Candy Kitchen because who says you have to stop at just one dessert?! Considering the happiness that this place brings you when you walk in the door, we cannot be surprised that it, coincidently, is named Savannah’s! This candy kitchen is known for its distinctive striped candy boxes, the barrels of candy throughout the store & its pralines. We recommend getting two of each of your choices because before you make it back to your room you will have already tried one of each of your pickings!

Savannah’s Candy Kitchen

Next up, our favorite shopping happened at the Charleston City Market . Built in 1841, this United States National Register Hall is a must stop shopping experience. You can easily identify the building with its green ironwork and brownstone stucco. It has the most unique music, food, art, jewelry and so much more made 100% of local South Carolina artisans. This makes the treasures you will purchase very special due to their uniqueness.

Lastly, we topped our night off with the, kid-friendly, Charleston ghost and graveyard tour. This one hour and thirty minute tour takes you through the boo-tiful historic district and exclusively through Charleston’s oldest burial ground. Included with a private tour guide, this tour provides a professional guide and moderate activity so make sure to wear your most comfortable walking shoes.

14 Romantic Things to Do in Charleston for Couples

Planning a romantic getaway to Charleston ? Charleston, SC is one of the most romantic destinations in the South! Here are my favorite romantic things to do in Charleston.

There are so many romantic activities in Charleston , from taking a classic horse-drawn carriage ride to learning how to make cocktails together to strolling through lush gardens hand-in-hand.

Kevin and I spent a romantic week-long vacation in Charleston , and we were able to do so many romantic things! Plan the perfect couples getaway with these romantic Charleston activities .

Post Contents

Most Romantic Things to Do in Charleston

1. take a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride.

One of the most romantic things to do in Charleston is to take a horse-drawn carriage ride .

Climb aboard a covered carriage and take a romantic ride through the heart of historic Charleston. You’ll experience all the charm and beautify of the city’s cobblestone streets, antebellum homes, and lush gardens.

There’s a good reason this is one of the top things to do in Charleston ! A carriage ride is the quintessential Charleston tour and is a great way to learn about the city’s history.

Book your romantic Charleston carriage ride here.

2. Take a Cocktail Class Together

One of the best things Kevin and I did on our trip to Charleston was take a cocktail class together.

Élevé Rooftop Restaurant & Lounge , located at the swanky Grand Bohemian Hotel , offers a unique cocktail class experience on the weekends. Head up to the rooftop bar overlooking the city and grab a seat at the bar to learn all about making classic cocktails.

The class includes a welcome toast, a demonstration and tasting of 4 classic cocktails (Old Fashioned, Gin Fizz, Daiquiri, and Margarita), and a lesson in bartending and cocktail history. We also learned a little bit about Charleston’s speakeasies and got some local restaurant and bar recommendations from our bartender.

This was a super cute date night activity, and we happened to do it on our dating anniversary as well (unplanned), so it was perfect!

3. Visit Magnolia Plantations and Gardens

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens has been famous for their landscaped gardens since they were opened to the public after the Civil War.

Take a romantic stroll through the azaleas and live oak trees, over bridges spanning serene ponds, and along the Ashley River.

While the gardens themselves are very romantic, it’s important to remember that beneath the beauty of these gardens lies a complex and painful history. Magnolia Plantation, like many others in Charleston, was built and sustained by the labor of enslaved Africans. As you stroll through the gardens, take a moment to reflect on the lives of those who worked the land under harsh conditions. Be sure to visit the slave cabins to learn more about the enslaved and freed African Americans who lived and worked here.

You can get discounted tickets to the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens using the Charleston TourPass.

4. Have a Picnic in the Park

Charleston’s parks are the perfect place for a romantic picnic (also a great choice if you’re planning a romantic getaway on a budget ).

Waterfront Park is a great spot along the Cooper River with plenty of benches by the water and under a canopy of trees where you can picnic and enjoy the scenery. Plus, this is where you’ll find the famous Charleston Pineapple Fountain.

White Point Garden is another popular scenic park with grassy areas shaded by old oak trees. You can picnic here surrounded by history, from Civil War cannons to monuments and statues.

5. Visit the Gardens at Middleton Place

The gardens at Middleton Place were designed to outshine neighboring gardens. They’re considered America’s Oldest Landscaped Gardens.

Stroll through the variety of camellia, azalea, cypress, and oak. The gardens are laid out with symmetrical designs, reflecting pools, and a maze of hedges. I recommend visiting early in the morning when the fog lays across the gardens, giving them a misty, moody feel.

As you visit, remember that this beauty was made possible by the labor of enslaved people who lived and worked on the plantation. Be sure to also visit the slave cemetery, Eliza’s House, the stableyards, and the programing on enslavement at Middleton Place to learn more about the enslaved and freed African Americans who lived and worked here.

6. Visit the Angel Oak Tree

The Angel Oak Tree is estimated to be 400-500 years old and is considered the largest Live Oak east of the Mississippi, measuring 66.5 feet tall and 28 feet wide.

The tree is magnificent, and it’s so romantic to walk hand-in-hand beneath and between its sprawling branches.

You can also picnic here, though not beneath the tree. There are picnic tables in the park further away from the tree if you’d like to set up for a romantic picnic here.

7. Sip Cocktails on a Rooftop Bar

Charleston has some amazing bars , and a lot of those are romantic rooftop spots with amazing city views where you can watch the sunset.

I highly recommend The Rooftop at The Vendue , a multi-level rooftop bar on top of The Vendue Hotel . This space is funky and art-forward, same as the hotel below, plus they have delicious drinks at two different bars on the roof. You can get a view off one direction toward the water and off the other direction for sunsets behind the city.

The Élevé Rooftop Restaurant & Lounge is another great rooftop bar. I’ve already mentioned their cocktail class, but they also have a nice outdoor rooftop area with cozy seating and city views.

8. Stroll Through the Charleston Night Market

The Charleston City Market is usually only open during the day. But from March through December on Friday and Saturday nights (plus some Thursdays and Sundays), you can stroll through the Night Market .

This is the largest art market in the Southeast, with over 200 local and regional artists represented. They also have live music and food available.

This is a great place to shop for local souvenirs to help you remember your romantic Charleston getaway.

9. Get a Professional Photoshoot

Document your romantic Charleston getaway with a fun and talented photographer, learn local tips, and capture priceless memories with photogenic backdrops. It’s a win all around!

With Flytographer , you can hire an amazing local photographer for a romantic vacation photoshoot at Charleston locations like the French Quarter District, Waterfront Park, Broad Street, and Folly Beach. Get wall-worthy photos that allow you to relive your getaway as the perfect souvenir.

You can use my link here for $25 off your first Flytographer photoshoot.

10. Stay at a Romantic Hotel

For a romantic getaway in Charleston, you’ll need a romantic place to stay! And Charleston is filled with amazing hotels , quaint B&Bs, and cozy vacation rentals that are perfect for couples.

A few of the most romantic hotels in Charleston include:

  • French Quarter Inn — the most award-winning hotel in Historic Charleston
  • The Loutrel — luxury hotel in the historic district with a Rooftop Terrace
  • 86 Cannon Charleston — restored 1860s house and adults-only property with a zero edge salt water pool
  • The Spectator Hotel — a boutique hotel that combines the Old South and the Jazz Age
  • The Pinch Charleston — modern boutique hotel on King Street that feels more like an apartment than a hotel

Any of these hotels would be perfect for cozying up together after a long day of explore Charleston!

11. Have a Romantic Dinner for Two

Charleston has some of the best restaurants in the South! There are so many great Charleston restaurants to choose from for a romantic dinner, but here are a few of my favorites:

  • Frannie & The Fox — Italian food on a cozy outdoor patio with a huge fireplace
  • Sorghum & Salt — Locally-crafted cuisine and a seasonal menu for new dishes every time you visit
  • Fleet Landing Restaurant & Bar — Waterfront dining for Southern seafood favorites
  • Well-Hung Vineyard & Restaurant — Great wine, a cheeky label, and elevated Southern favorites

You really can’t go wrong with any of these delicious Charleston restaurants!

12. Take a Beach Getaway

One of the best parts about Charleston is that it’s so close to the beach, so you can combine a city break with a beach getaway all in one vacation.

Folly Beach has some of the best waves on the South Carolina coast, plenty of beach bars, and the perfect habitat for coastal wildlife like dolphins and sea turtles. At just 13 miles from Downtown Charleston, Folly Beach is an easy beach getaway from the city.

Sullivan’s Island has 10 miles of protected shores and tons of wildlife. This peaceful, secluded beach is an amazing getaway. At just 9 miles from Downtown Charleston, Sullivan’s Island is the closest beach to the city.

There’s also Isle of Palms , Kiawah Island , and Seabrook Island all within 25 miles of Charleston.

13. Wander the Hidden Alleyways

Get lost exploring the charming streets of Charleston together. There are so many quaint alleyways and secret pathways that make for a romantic stroll through the city.

Wander through the historic Philadelphia Alley or the picturesque Longitude Lane. Walk among the trailing Confederate Jasmine that lines Stoll’s Alley and Price’s Alley.

Around every corner is a new beautiful lane full of history for you and your lover to explore.

14. Tour the Beautiful Historic Homes

Charleston is full of beautiful historic house museums that you can tour.

From the grand Nathaniel Russell House to the preserved Aiken-Rhett House Museum , the historic Heyward-Washington House to the opulent Joseph Manigault House , there are so many picturesque antebellum homes to see.

These beautifully preserved mansions, with their intricate details, sweeping staircases, and lush gardens, tell the stories of Charleston’s wealthy elite. However, it’s vital to remember that these homes were also sites of enslavement and conditions of immense hardship. As you admire the grandeur of these historic sites, take the time to also learn about the lives of the enslaved people who played a crucial role in maintaining these households.

You can get discounted tickets to all of these historic homes using the Charleston TourPass.
