Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy is an animated series that premiered on 28 October 2021 , first on the streaming service Paramount+ , then on Nickelodeon , [1] a conglomerate sister broadcasting channel. It is the ninth Star Trek spin-off and the third animated Star Trek series, following Star Trek: The Animated Series and Star Trek: Lower Decks . Unlike the previous animated series, this is the first to be rendered entirely with computer-generated imaging and 3D modeling. Previously, the Star Trek: Short Treks episode " The Girl Who Made the Stars " was produced in a similar fashion. Two seasons were produced before the series' cancellation on 23 June 2023 .

Alex Kurtzman stated that unlike Lower Decks , Prodigy will be kid-focused with an " entirely different perspective and an entirely different tone, " adding, " What's exciting about it is not only looking at each animated series as what's the different tone, but what's the different technology we can apply to these things so that visually they're entirely different? " [7]

In February 2019, it was announced Nickelodeon had entered talks to air the show, and Trollhunters writers and executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman had boarded the project. [8]

On 24 April 2019 , it was revealed that the series would indeed air (but not debut) on Nickelodeon and focus on a group of lawless teenage characters finding a derelict Starfleet ship which they use to " search for adventure, meaning and salvation. " [9]

In May 2019, CBS filed trademarks for the titles " Star Trek: Section 31 " and " Star Trek: Prodigy ", with posts on Reddit later in the year attaching the Prodigy title to the second animated series. [10]

On 23 July 2020, it was revealed that the show would, in fact, be named Star Trek: Prodigy , and that it would air on Nickelodeon in 2021. [11] [12] The premiere episode did air on the channel on 17 December 2021, but on that occasion it was an one-time-only affair. [13] It was eventually announced that the first ten episodes (parts 1 and 2) would belatedly air regularly on a repetitive basis on the broadcaster in the home market one year later, starting on 8 July 2022 . [14]

In 2022 , Prodigy 's first season was nominated for "Outstanding Animated Series" in the inaugural Children’s & Family Emmy Awards , and won the Emmy for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Production Design." [15]

In 2023 , Prodigy 's first season was nominated for a Television Critics Association Award in "Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming," a category with both animated and live action content intended for family and young adult audiences. [16] It was also nominated for another Children's & Family Emmy Award for "Outstanding Sound Design." [17]

Development

In July 2019 , the Hagemans announced the full writers' room for the show. [21] Among those revealed to be writing the series are Trollhunters writer-producers Aaron Waltke and Chad Quandt , The 100 writer-producers Shawna Benson and Julie Benson , Black Sails writer Lisa Boyd , Shades of Blue writer Nikhil Jayaram , and Diandra Pendleton-Thompson .

In October 2019 , Kurtzman said that this series will be animated in a digital 3D style, like Ninjago or Trollhunters , as opposed to the more "cartoon" look of Star Trek: Lower Decks . He also confirmed that the series had been picked up for a two-season order, and that a title had been chosen for the series, but he was not yet ready to reveal it. [22]

In the same interview, Heather Kadin said that, due to the time-consuming process of 3D animation, the series would likely air later than 2021 . Kadin also emphasized that the Hagemans' writing style will be accessible to kids without patronizing them or alienating their parents:

" The reason we went to the Hagemans is because if you've seen their work, you know that they're not writing " Muppet Babies ". It's not "Little Spock and Little Kirk." It's not playing down [to viewers] that way. " " Even [with] their characters in Ninjago – they are teenagers – I was able to watch that with my kids and they write with a very epic quality. They tell stories the way we tell stories in live action: serialized, turning over cards… " " I think it will be a great way for fans to introduce the franchise to their kids, and for new fans to be formed, because it's such a big franchise, [it can be hard] to get into as a kid. " [23]

In an October 2020 interview with Trek Report , producer and writer Aaron Waltke said that Prodigy aims to bridge the gap between old and new iterations of the Star Trek franchise , with a series that strikes a tone of hope and idealism. [24]

" It's been exhilarating to make a series that honors classic Trek for legacy fans like myself, but also provides an entry point for new audiences to be introduced to the world of the Federation and its aspirations for an idealistic future, even when facing adversity. Writing the return of our beloved Voyager captain feels oddly iconic, like a homecoming for me. And we hope to create something both young and old can watch together… just as I once did with my dad all those many years ago. " [25]

In February 2021 , it was announced that Prodigy would debut on Paramount+ in 2021. An image of the alien bridge crew was also released. [26]

On First Contact Day in April 2021 , the Hagemans revealed that the series will be set in the Delta Quadrant in 2383 . They also revealed an image of Captain Janeway as she will appear in the series, and explained that the character will appear as an emergency training hologram on board the starship. A new summary of the series' premise was also released:

Prodigy " will follow a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek Franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents. " [27]

In May 2021 , more details about the cast were released, with the main voice cast revealed. [28]

On 23 July 2021 , a teaser trailer was released during the Paramount+ Star Trek Comic-Con@Home panel, revealing the first animated footage of the series along with the first look and name of the vessel, the USS Protostar . [29]

The series' opening title sequence was publicly released on 31 August 2021 , as part of a Paramount+ presentation to the Television Critics Association . This presentation also confirmed that the series' theme music had been composed by Michael Giacchino , and the music for the series would be composed by Nami Melumad . [30]

On 28 October 2021 , the series two-part pilot " Lost and Found " premiered on Paramount+. A total of ten episodes aired intermittently until 3 February 2022 .

On 27 October 2022 , the remaining ten episodes of Season One began to air weekly.

Cancellation and pick-up

On 23 June 2023, Prodigy was cancelled by Paramount+. While Season 2 was allowed to finish post-production, it, along with the series as a whole, would be sold to any interested third-party outsider. [31] The series removal from Paramount+ was affected three days later, on 26 June 2023. [32] On broadcast hiatus at the time of its cancellation, the series was not allowed to return to Nickelodeon either. [2]

Paramount did not provide a clear reason for the unexpected cancellation. News sites such as TrekMovie.com , ScreenRant, and Inverse suggested that the cancellation was motivated by cost-cutting measures and tax write-offs, whereas Paramount itself had intimated in a statement to TrekMovie.com that it was part of clearing the way of the upcoming merger of Paramount+ with Showtime by " refining our content offering to deliver the best streaming experience for subscribers ". Paramount concurrently assured TrekMovie.com that it remained stoutly "invested in growing the Star Trek franchise". [33] [34] [35]

On 21 July 2023 , co-executive producer Aaron Waltke announced on his Twitter account that the entire first season had become available for digital purchase at digital vendors like Prime Video , ITunes Store , Google, and others. Until then, only the first ten episodes had been available, in tandem with the physical PRO Season 1, Volume 1 DVD and Blu-ray home video format releases. [36] A run on the DVD and Blu-ray stocks still available at retailers at the time of the cancellation announcement caused them to sell out quickly in the home market. [37]

The fanbase also tried to organize an online campaign to save the series. [38] [3] On 24 August 2023 , in an effort to find the show another home, a fan raised US$1,200 on GoFundMe to have an airplane tow a banner reading, "#SAVE STAR TREK PRODIGY" over the Los Angeles offices of streaming services Netflix , Amazon Prime , and Hulu . [39] A drawing with the same hashtag is set to be among the items going to space on a Blue Origin (part of the empire of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ) flight. [40]

Kevin Hageman expressed in an interview that his desire was to see a third season come to fruition, that will eventually lead up to an animated film series. [41]

On 11 October 2023 , it was Netflix that announced that they had picked up Prodigy , with season two set to premiere on 1 July 2024 , [42] after season one had debuted on the streaming service later in 2023 on 25 December, [43] [44] which incidentally, managed to break into their own Top-Ten streaming listings all around the world, including that for the home market. [45] If renewed, Netflix would have to pay for, and license future seasons themselves. [4] The second season was also picked up by streaming service SkyShowtime, the Paramount+ spin-off. [46]

On 22 March 2024 , the series unexpectedly debuted in France on the public television service France.TV as well as on AppleTV+ France, ahead of the Netflix release. [47] After some initial confusion, Dan and Kevin Hageman apologized for an "unfortunate miscommunication". [48] [49] [50]

On 1 July 2024 , season two debuted on Netflix, and while contrary to its preceding season failing to do so on the home market, [51] it did manage to enter several regional Netflix Top-Ten listings in markets abroad again, most notably in Europe (including premature release country France) and India. [52] Afterwards, it was announced that Prodigy would lead the CBS lineup at San Diego Comic Con with a screening and Q&A panel on 28 July with Kate Mulgrew and Brett Gray in attendance. [53]

Star Trek Prodigy - Meet the Cast

In June 2019 , Eaglemoss/Hero Collector 's project manager Ben Robinson indicated that the company would manufacture starship miniatures from this series, [54] though that intent was thwarted by the company's bankruptcy on 5 August 2022.

Released Prodigy action figures

On 13 July 2021 , ViacomCBS Consumer Products and Playmates Toys jointly announced that the latter had acquired new licensing for "action figures, vehicles and ships, role play and other toy categories," and slated the first of these products for retail release in 2022. Among other Star Trek series and films, this licensing encompasses Star Trek: Prodigy , Star Trek: Lower Decks , Star Trek: Discovery , and Star Trek: Picard . [55] On 6 December 2023 however, Playmates announced that after only thirteen releases, they would no longer produce action figures from the Star Trek license, Prodigy included, due to low sales. The Hologram Janeway figure from Prodigy remains unreleased. [56]

On 18 August 2022 , it was announced that two new tie-in books, Supernova (also the title of a video game releasing in October 2022 ) and A Dangerous Trade would be released on 17 January 2023 . [57]

  • ↑ The show did however premiere on some foreign Nickelodeon subsidiaries where Paramount+ was not (yet) available. One such market concerned the Netherlands and Flanders, where the in the Dutch language dubbed version of the show debuted for an one-time run on the local Nickelodeon Benelux channel on 18 April 2022 , albeit the first ten episodes (parts 1 and 2) only. [1] Repetitive regular airing of the entire first season started on 31 October 2022 in support of the local Paramount+ encompassing SkyShowtime which had been launched in the country six days earlier, and where Prodigy was included in its startup content catalog.

  • ↑ An online Change.org worldwide "Save Star Trek Prodigy!" petition was initiated on 23 June 2023 by a " Trekkie " which managed to surpass 17,000 signatures in a couple of days. Still, after the initial rush, fervor slowed downed considerably as it took a further four months to double that number when the petition closed later that year on 11 October with the petition initiator claiming victory after the Netflix pickup had been made public by stating that the fan's voices "were heard". [5]
  • ↑ There was very little doubt left, if any at all, that the franchise had no intent whatsoever to pay even a single penny more for Prodigy beyond the season two post-production completion, after they had taken their definitive leave of the series in their official statement, "Star Trek: Prodigy will not be returning for the previously announced second season. On behalf of everyone at Paramount+, Nickelodeon, and CBS Studios, we want to thank Kevin and Dan Hageman, Ben Hibon , Alex Kurtzman, and the Secret Hideout team, along with the fantastic cast and crew for all their hard work and dedication bringing the series to life. ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Jumps From Nickelodeon to Paramount+

The animated “Star Trek: Prodigy” will premiere on Paramount+ before it airs on Nickelodeon, ViacomCBS announced Wednesday.

The move comes as ViacomCBS looks to unite its “Star Trek” franchise on the streaming service. “Prodigy” will join the flagship series “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Star Trek: Picard,” which saw Patrick Stewart make his long-awaited return to the franchise last year. Paramount+ also hosts the animated “Lower Decks” series and the upcoming “Strange New Worlds.”

No premiere date for “Prodigy” has been announced, though the series is expected to debut sometime this year. Watch a promo for the entire “Star Trek: Universe” below.

“Prodigy,” from creators Kevin and Dan Hageman, centers on six young outcasts who know nothing about the ship they have commandeered — a first in the history of the “Star Trek” franchise — but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.

“In three years, we’ve expanded the Star Trek Universe to new heights, creating five original series — each with its own unique storytelling and distinct cinematic feel,” Alex Kurtzman, executive producer on ViacomCBS’ entire “Star Trek” universe, said. “We’re so excited to partner with Dan and Kevin Hageman and the team at Nickelodeon for ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ as we bring Trek to a new generation of younger fans with an animated series as rich in character and scope as our live action shows. I’m thrilled audiences of all ages now have instant access to the full Trek library, classic and new original series, on our new home at Paramount+.”

“When ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ first premiered, we knew we had the beginning of something special,” Julie McNamara, executive vice president and head of programming for Paramount+, added. “Over three years later, we are thrilled that Paramount+ will serve as the streaming home of the Star Trek Universe, with an unparalleled existing and expanding library of Trek content. The upcoming addition of ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ to Paramount+ means subscribers now have a Trek series for every member of the family — including kids. We are excited to bring this next chapter to a new generation of Trek fans alongside the creative masterminds behind Secret Hideout and Nickelodeon, as well as the talented Kevin and Dan Hageman.”

“Debuting ‘Prodigy’ on Paramount+ alongside the complete Star Trek universe points to our strategy of growing Nickelodeon’s reach by expanding our top franchises and diving deeper into their worlds, and their characters and stories,” Ramsey Naito, president of Nickelodeon Animation, said. “And on top of having great characters and absolutely gorgeous animation, ‘Prodigy’ shows how the ViacomCBS brands can come together to make great, compelling content that appeals to both new audiences and longtime super fans. We’re incredibly proud of this series and we’re looking forward to building its audience across the Paramount+ and Nickelodeon platforms.”

Kate mulgrew is vice admiral kathryn janeway and hologram janeway, brett gray is dal r'el, cadet captain of the uss protostar, ella purnell is gwyndala, an impossible girl with a destiny, rylee alazraqui is rok-tahk, a child science whiz, jason mantzoukas is jankom pog, engineer with a unique way of speaking, angus imrie is zero, a non-corporeal being in a robot suit, jimmi simpson is the villainous dreadnok, jameela jamil is ascencia, the vindicator out of time, robert picardo is the doctor, a holographic starfleet veteran, robert beltran is captain chakotay, lost among the stars, john noble was the diviner, a once and future villain.

After being pulled from Paramount+, the brilliant animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy is now streaming on Netflix. The series follows a group of new alien characters from the Delta Quadrant of the Milky Way Galaxy after they find a lost Starfleet ship: the USS Protostar. The crew makes their way to the Alpha Quadrant -- in much less time than the USS Voyager did -- and Season 2 takes them on new adventures, boldly going where none of their species have ever gone before.

Because Star Trek is a nearly 60-year-old franchise, Prodigy is one of Paramount's most important shows. Not only is it a spiritual sequel to Star Trek: Voyager , but it is the only series in the third wave of shows specifically designed to appeal to new, younger fans of space, starships and weird aliens. With a collection of new and legacy characters, Star Trek: Prodigy makes this massive universe that much bigger.

Kathryn Janeway is the famous Starfleet captain who brought the USS Voyager home after seven years stranded in the Delta Quadrant. She also all-but defeated the Borg collective, with the help of a little time travel and self-sacrifice. Now an Admiral, Janeway searched for the USS Protostar, which was commanded by her former first officer, Chakotay, a man she may love. She was also the model for the holographic training program who led the rag-tag Protostar crew back to the Alpha Quadrant. A mother figure to the crew, she sacrificed herself to save them and Starfleet. Now the crew travels with the real Janeway to explore the galaxy and find Chakotay.

Kate Mulgrew was the second choice to play Janeway on Voyager , after Canadian actor Genvieve Bujold left the series on its second day of filming. As a Starfleet captain, her performance is the spiritual successor to James T. Kirk . Mulgrew played the character with equal parts compassion, curiosity and fierce loyalty to her crew. Mulgrew has a storied television and stage career, having most recently played Red on Orange is the New Black.

Star Trek Voyager

Pulled to the far side of the galaxy, where the Federation is seventy-five years away at maximum warp speed, a Starfleet ship must cooperate with Maquis rebels to find a way home.

REVIEW: Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1, Part 2 Blu-ray Brings the Protostar Crew to Life

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1, Part 2 arrives on Blu-ray and brings the animated characters from the Paramount+ series to life in new and exciting ways.

Dal R'El is the leader of the rag-tag crew of outcasts who steal the USS Protostar to escape from a life of slavery under the Diviner. He wanted to be captain but didn't realize what that entailed. Over the course of Season 1, he learned the importance of command and realized his crew was the family he never had. As a genetically augmented being, with human DNA and many others, he is "crime" in the eyes of Starfleet. Yet, after Janeway argued for him, he was accepted into Starfleet Academy.

Brett Gray is a young actor who's appeared on a number of series in guest spots, like When They See Us , Chicago P.D. and Law & Order SVU . He's perhaps best known as Jamal Turner from all four seasons of On My Block . His role as Dal is one of his first voice acting credits.

Gwyndala is the daughter of the Diviner, a time traveler meant to save the Vau N'Akat species. He was not supposed to have a progeny, making Gwyndala a temporal anomaly. She was aware of his cruel and oppressive nature, and finally abandoned her father when he chose the USS Protostar over her on a planet that was trying to eat them both. As part of the crew, she wanted to join Starfleet, but after her father died at the hands of another of their species, she left Starfleet to try to save her people from extinction.

Ella Purnell is an English actor who began her career in a stage production of Oliver! when she was 10 years old. She's since gone on to appear in 25 films and television series. She appeared in Kick-Ass 2, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, the Army of the Dead franchise and many others. She was most recently seen in Yellowjackets as Jackie. While Gwyn left the crew, she's almost certainly going to appear in Season 2 of Prodigy .

Rok-Tahk is a large, spiky creature that speaks in roars and growls. However, once the universal translator is active, she has a soft, child's voice. Originally picked to be security, Rok-Tahk's intelligence and curiosity made her perfect as a science officer. She is deeply caring, adopting Murf -- an unknown, indestructible lifeform -- as something between a pet and little brother. She is the heart and soul of the Protostar crew.

Daughter of actor Carlos Alazraqui (best known for Reno 911 ), Rylee is one of the youngest members of the Star Trek: Prodigy cast. In her burgeoning career, she has done mostly voice work, but has appeared in live-action roles in Stillwater , The Villains of Valley View and other small roles.

Star Trek: Prodigy Team Reacts to Fans' Aerial Banner to Save the Series

Brothers and Star Trek: Prodigy co-creators Dan and Kevin Hageman praise the sky banner campaign imploring Netflix to pick up Prodigy for season 2.

Jankom Pog is the only member of an Alpha Quadrant species on the USS Protostar crew. He was on a Tellarite "sleeper ship," but was awakened during the flight to make a number of repairs on the ship. The unusual robotic assistant changed the way he spoke, making it so that he only referred to himself in the third person. He eventually had to leave the ship, ending up on the Diviner's planet until Dal recruited him to fix up the Protostar so that they could escape.

Jason Mantzoukas started his career as comedian with the Upright Citizens Brigade in the late 1990s, working under Amy Poehler. Since then, he's had a massive career appearing on film and television. He played a prominent role in John Wick 3 -- Parabellum . He's appeared on many television series, most notably FX's The League. He is also a part of the cast of Percy Jackson and the Olympians , playing Dionysus.

Originally introduced in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Is There No Truth In Beauty?", the Medusans are a non-corporeal species whose true form breaks the minds of those who see it. Zero was a fugitive prisoner on the Diviner's planet, living in a ramshackle robotic suit after being captured by the Kazon for the villainous Vau N'Akat leader. Zero helped Dal, Rok-Tahk and Jankom Pog escape the planet.

Angus Imrie is a British actor best known for another non-corporeal character, Josh Archer on the BBC Radio drama series The Archers . He's appeared in a number of stage, television and film productions, but Zero is arguably his most prominent role yet. He did act opposite Captain Picard himself, Patrick Stewart, in The Kid Who Would Be King . Imrie played young Merlin while Stewart played the older, wiser wizard.

Dreadnok is a sentient artificial lifeform in service to the Vau N'Akat time travelers. He is a war machine, sent to pursue the USS Protostar crew after they escaped with the ship in the series premiere. That Dreadnok was destroyed, but the Vindicator had her own version of the evil robot. The second Dreadnok escaped with Ascensia in the Season 1 finale of Star Trek: Prodigy , sure to strike at them again in Season 2.

Jimmi Simpson has been acting since 2000, mostly known for comedy. His breakout role came as Lyle the Intern on The Late Show With David Letterman , followed by Liam McPoyle on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia . His most prominent role was the younger version of the Man in Black from Westworld . He's a prolific voice actor as well. He's one of the few actors to be in both Star Trek and Star Wars , with his role in Star Wars: The Bad Batch as the sinister Dr. Royce Hemlock.

Posing as a Trill Starfleet officer, Ascencia was another Vau N'Akat sent back through time to destroy the Federation to save her people. She was responsible for restoring the Diviner, and she ultimately killed him in order to complete their mission. When it was clear the USS Protostar crew, specifically Gwyndala, were more than a match for her, she and Dreadnok escaped. She is still out there in space looking for a way to destroy Starfleet, which she blames for the extinction of her people.

Jameela Jamil has been in many high-profile roles after her breakout role on The Good Place . She played Titania in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law for Marvel, along with the voice of Wonder Woman in DC's League of Super-Pets . She has also done a lot of other voice acting, including recurring roles in Crossing Swords , Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous and Mira, Royal Detective . While not confirmed for a return in Prodigy Season 2, she will almost certainly be back.

Star Trek Prodigy's Cancelation Shows Paramount Repeating Past Mistakes

Star Trek: Prodigy is a series that would make a whole new generation of Trekkies, and Paramount is repeating past mistakes by cancelling the show.

Originally meant to be a recurring character, the holographic Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager became one of the show's most iconic characters. Originally designed for emergencies his program ran almost nonstop for seven years. Once he gained control of his own programming, he became sentient, even authoring a holo-novel. While he was supposed to eventually adopt the name "Zimmerman," the character was only known as the Doctor (like another 60-year-old sci-fi figure). He will return for Star Trek: Prodigy in Season 2 .

Robert Picardo is a venerated actor whose sheer charisma and humor helped the Doctor become a vital part of the USS Voyager Crew. He has played hundreds of roles over the years, and he maintains an active YouTube channel. Along with the Doctor, he is best known as the cheekily named Dr. Dick Richard in the 1980s series China Beach . He also played Ithamar Conkey in Dickinson , and Richard Woolsey on Stargate: Atlantis .

Chakotay was a Maquis captain -- Federation guerillas fighting an unsanctioned war against the Cardassians -- when he was sent to the Delta Quadrant in Star Trek: Voyager . Despite an ill-advised romance with Seven of Nine , Chakotay was long thought to be the man Captain Janeway was in love with. Star Trek: Prodigy does very little to debunk this idea. The captain of the Protostar, Chakotay was lost in time after encountering the Vau N'Akat.

Robert Beltran is a journeyman actor working on film and television since his first role in 1981's Zoot Suit by Luis Valdez and starring another famous sci-fi commander, Edward James Olmos. Beltran is best known for playing Chakotay on Star Trek: Voyager , however. Often appearing in guest roles, he played recurring characters on 1994's Models Inc. and in Seasons 3 and 4 of HBO's Big Love .

The Diviner was sent back in time to destroy Starfleet because his people destroyed themselves after making first contact with Captain Chakotay and the Protostar. A cruel, heartless being, he was almost successful. It was only after he looked on Zero's true form that he began to change. He died protecting Gwyndala, but because of time travel, he's still alive out there somewhere, possibly one day returning.

John Noble is a legendary actor known for his roles in Fringe , The Lord of the Rings and many others. He appeared as himself and the voice of the Demon Mallus on one of the funniest seasons of Legends of Tomorrow . Despite his long and storied stage and film career, his role in genre shows and movies has made him beloved to many generations of geeks, nerds and other outcasts.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix, with Season 2 expected in early 2024.

Gwyn is a 17-year-old member of the Vau N' Akat — a new race to "Star Trek" — who was raised on her father’s desolate mining planet and grew up dreaming of exploring the stars. She is played by British actor Ella Purnell, most recently seen in Zack Snyder’s "Army of the Dead" on Netflix.

Tellarites are a long-established alien race in "Star Trek" first appearing in " The Original Series " and this teenage Tellarite is named Jankom Pog. Played by Jason Mantzoukas, Pog apparently loves a good argument and regardless of his own opinion, he’ll always play ‘devil’s advocate’ for the sake of hearing all sides. Mantzoukas has appeared in a number of television shows including "Brooklyn 99" and "The League" together with voice roles in "Invincible" and "American Dad!"

Dal is a purple alien whose race is not yet known. According to the official blurb, he fancies himself as a maverick and holds strong onto his unwavering hope even in the toughest of times. Played by Brett Gray, most recently seen in the Netflix coming-of-age series "On My Block" together with guest appearances on " Chicago PD."

Murf is an endearing, indestructible blob with curiously good timing and an insatiable appetite for ship parts. It's not known whether or not Murf is in its late teens or not. Dee Bradley Baker stars as the Yaphet-esque creature, possibly best known as the voice of Captain Rex in the multitude of "Star Wars" animated television shows and Klaus the goldfish on "American Dad!"

The Hulk-like Rok-Tahk, voiced by young actor Rylee Alazraqui stars as an unusually bright 8-year-old Brikar . While a bit shy, Rok doesn't hold back when it comes to her love of animals. Alazraqui herself is only 10 years old and to date has had voice roles on Cartoon Network's "Summer Camp Island."

The British actor Angus Imrie plays a particularly interesting character, Zero, who is a Medusan, not seen on a televised "Star Trek" show since "The Original Series" episode "Is There in Truth No Beauty?" (S03, E07). These are a non-corporeal and genderless energy-based life form known to cause insanity to any humanoid who gaze upon their natural form. Consequently, Zero wears a containment suit to protect those around them. Imrie has most prominently appeared as Prince Edward in Netflix’s "The Crown" and the Batman prequel series "Pennyworth."

In an interview with Dennis Miller on the Dennis Miller + 1 podcast released on May 12, Kate Mulgrew shared some details about the upcoming show. All the characters are from the Delta Quadrant and the show picks up just a few years after USS Voyager‘s return home.

"Five kids are incarcerated on an obscure planet in an uncharted part of the galaxy. They escape from their imprisonment and race across the planet to find a defunct starship buried in the sand of the planet's surface," Mulgrew said in the interview . They enter the ship, but are unable to make it work. With prison guards hot on their heels, they suddenly stumble upon an Emergency Training Hologram in the form of Captain Janeway.

"It's really, I think, going to capture the imagination of little kids. And if they can sit with their mothers, who watched me in live action, and their fathers who loved the other guys, we’ve got a family affair and that will bring it full circle," Mulgrew said in the podcast .

"Star Trek: Prodigy" will debut on Paramount+ in the US sometime in late 2021 before later airing on Nickelodeon. The show will also be available on the CTV Sci-Fi Channel in Canada. Additional international availability has not yet been announced.

The Big Picture

  • Fans rallied around Star Trek: Prodigy after it was pulled off Paramount+, and now it's dropping on Netflix on December 25, 2023.
  • The showrunners are excited about the possibility of more seasons and hope to continue the series beyond Season 2.
  • Season 2 will explore new challenges for the crew as they navigate the adult world of Starfleet.

In just a few days, a much larger audience is about to experience one of Paramount+'s most exciting Star Trek series when Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 flies onto Netflix on Christmas Day . The series first debuted at New York Comic Con back in 2021, where it captured the hearts of audiences who were delighted to discover an animated series that was aimed towards a younger audience, while still appealing to the demographic who grew up with Star Trek: Voyager .

Star Trek: Prodigy centers around the rag-tag crew of kids—Dal ( Brett Gray ) and his crew, Gwyn ( Ella Purnell ), Rok-Tahk ( Rylee Alazraqui ), Jankom Pog ( Jason Mantazoukas ), Zero ( Angus Imrie ), and Murf ( Dee Bradley Baker )—who came into the possession of the U.S.S. Protostar , which was previously captained by a now-missing Chakotay ( Robert Beltran ). Throughout Season 1, they receive a crash-course lesson on what it means to be a crew, under the wise guidance of a Janeway hologram ( Kate Mulgrew ), and become all the better for it. The finale sets the stage for a very exciting Season 2, which Star Trek: Prodigy absolutely deserves .

Collider caught up with Star Trek: Prodigy 's showrunners, Kevin and Dan Hageman to celebrate the debut of Season 1 on Netflix and look forward to Season 2—and beyond. In addition to discussing the past and present, Hageman also spoke enthusiastically about the Star Trek: Fans that helped to save the series after it was pulled off Paramount+, what it was like to bring a little romance to the series with Dal and Gwyn, and they also cryptically teased the future of another project of theirs: the sequel to Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark . You can read the full interview below, and be sure to catch Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 when it arrives on Netflix in the U.S. on December 25, 2023 .

How 'Star Trek' Fans Carried on the Tradition of Saving Series With 'Prodigy'

COLLIDER: What was it like for both of you to see the way that Star Trek fans rallied around a Prodigy ?

KEVIN HAGEMAN: I would say when the news came, it was devastating. We had so much faith and hope in our show, but we and our crew felt so small in knowing this, and just trying to keep this engine going. But then you got the love from the fans.

DAN HAGEMAN: I remember thinking, “Oh, the fans are not gonna like this.”

KEVIN: Yeah, I expected some support, but holy cow, it was amazing. Literally, it was just bringing back the memories of The Original Series with them.

DAN: Like the selling out of the toys and the books and then the banner. It just built and built and built.

That entire movement felt like a perfect example of Star Trek: Prodigy , like all of the ideas and themes that you have packaged into the show.

KEVIN: Yes! 100%.

DAN: Yeah, I reflect on that a lot. We were just talking about even from the conception of the show to how it started on Nickelodeon and then Paramount+ bought it, and there's all this tumultuousness around the show, and making it with COVID. We really feel like The Little Spaceship That Could just trying to get into Starfleet, so we're so happy to be able to reveal that the adventure doesn't end them getting to Starfleet. There’s more.

Definitely. One of the things that I really liked about the back half of Season 1 was that I was right about Gwyn and Dal and their little connection, so I want to know, how fun was it to bring a little bit of romance to the Star Trek Universe?

KEVIN: Oh, I love that. Yeah, it's teenagers . Come on. There's gotta be a little bit of teenage [romance]. What Dan and I do is, we write wish fulfillment. If you look at anything we've ever done, there's huge wish fulfillment. And you put yourselves in the shoes of these characters, they’re alien teenagers venturing into the unknown.

DAN: We also saw them as two sides of a coin, as always. Characters who need each other, a lot like how Kirk and Spock need each other, their skill sets…

KEVIN: They're teenagers and they have a libido.

I remember when I came away from seeing the premiere at New York Comic-Con, I was like, “Those two have to kiss at some point in this season,” because you had it so perfectly laid out from the very beginning. So, it was definitely wish fulfillment in a lot of ways.

KEVIN: They complete each other really nicely.

DAN: Now you have Janeway and Chakotay. What's gonna happen with them? Are they gonna smooch?

Yes! The eternal question. I am curious, how far along are you into Season 2? Is that completely done and ready to go? Where are you at in that phase?

DAN: We just wrapped Episode 218, so we’re on like our last two episodes, so we should be done by the end of the year.

KEVIN: Season 1 kept getting bigger and the finale of Season 1 was huge, and then now we gotta go bigger. So now we're at the end of Season 2 and you’re on a little TV show budget, and we're just trying to make it as big and as amazing as possible.

Talking about Season 1 going big, what were some of the most complex scenes that you still can't believe you managed to pull off in Season 1?

KEVIN: The Kobayashi Maru episode was such a challenge and Aaron Waltke, he was a superstar on that and we pulled it off. There's so many complications about trying to get the rights of actors’ voices, and even the song. We had an AC/DC Thunderstruck song that we didn't have the money for the rights, but then our composer created a “Lightningboom” instead of “Thunderstruck.” [Laughs] There's so many difficulties that we went through to do that. What about you, Dan? Was there one that stood out?

DAN: I think you brought up a great episode. I can’t top that.

KEVIN: That was a hard one just to produce.

DAN: The pilot! The pilot was hard.

KEVIN: The pilot was so hard.

DAN: It’s so hard starting a show because you have input coming in from a lot of different directions and you have a vision that you're trying to get to. Like, I remember with Drednok, when they first showed us what Drednok sounded like they made him very, very crazy, like, “I'm an evil guy!” And we’re like, “No, it's scarier if he's silent and he has a very soft voice.” So you have to have these discussions about every little detail in order to have it work.

KEVIN: And everyone's questioning it. “Is it too much romance? Is there not enough? Is it funny? Do we need more jokes?”

DAN: “Why is Drednok scary with a soft voice?” Yeah.

KEVIN: And now it's like we're doing episodes Nickelodeon trusts us now. They love what we're doing and they trust us.

Where Could 'Star Trek: Prodigy' Go After Season 2?

Excellent. Well, that's good to hear. As you're nearing the end of Season 2, do you think there are more stories to tell in this universe? Are we coming to an end or maybe a hopeful beginning if things continue to go well?

KEVIN: I really hope.

DAN: I'd say there's both, Kevin. At the end of Episode 40, there's a nice wrap-up. We never want to leave people hanging.

KEVIN: Like Season 1. I think Season 1 felt like a nice wrap-up, but, “Oh my gosh, Gwyn is going back…” There's exciting teases.

DAN: There’s threads of what's next. If we're lucky enough to go to Season 3, I'm really excited about where the show can go. We wrote this thing to go seven seasons at least.

KEVIN: I don't want to be the most short-lived Star Trek show in existence. It's not why we created this show.

DAN: Yeah, Mike McMahan. Just joking. [Laughs]

Especially with the fans and how passionate they've proven themselves to be. I hope there are definitely more seasons than just the two.

KEVIN: I hope people will look back at our show and be like, “Oh my god, they followed the footsteps of The Original Series . It got canceled, they got brought back to life. Oh, here comes Star Trek the motion picture.” Why not?

I've asked this question before but do we think that there is any opportunity to see this show crossover with any of the other shows? After the Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds crossover, I was like, “Are we getting any closer to seeing these characters pop up in other mediums?”

DAN: I think they have to to a level of degree because I feel like Star Trek is always good for deep cuts of like, “Look at that alien species from The Original Series , or yada, yada.” So I feel like we are now a deep cut where someone's gonna want to show a Brikar in their show, or a Mellanoid Slime Worm with Murf. It's only gonna make Star Trek fans appreciate it even more. But I'd love to see Gwyndala and I'd love to see Dal. I'd love to see what they look like in a show.

KEVIN: Yeah, Ella Purnell and Brett Gray just actually look like their characters.

KEVIN: And our show is very grounded, even more than like Lower Decks , which is a comedy. Ours is very grounded and real-feeling, I think, so to see them crossover… I saw some fan did a makeup as Gwyn once and it was stunning, and I'm like, “I would love to see Gwyn.”

Especially with how incredible the prosthetics teams are on all of these shows. They can pull off so much.

KEVIN: Yeah. Someday, hopefully.

Fingers crossed. What are some of the themes of Season 2 that you can tease where things are going?

DAN: I think we've said this before, but we said in Season 1 the kids steal a ship, in Season 2 they earn a ship. They're in a much bigger world now that they're in Starfleet.

KEVIN: And that's one of the biggest challenges. In Season 1, they're like in a “stolen car.” It's a bunch of teenagers in a stolen car and then they're in their own little world trying to survive. Now, you're on the New Voyager. You're in the adult world now. You're trying to become Starfleet, and so that's a challenge. There's a blessing and a curse with that.

DAN: It’s what they want. When you’ve had as many adventures as them, is following orders something that they'd want to do?

KEVIN: So I think as writers, Season 2, we really wanted to ride that balance where, “Well, I don't want to see them in classes and in the adult world now. That's not fun.” This is the wish fulfillment of no parents around, having your own ship, and so you'll see, I think, in Season 2 there's a nice balance of keeping that spirit.

DAN: There's something, there's something that Kate said that's nice, too, that kind of reflects… There's so much that these kids can learn from their elders at Star Trek , but there's also an equal amount of stuff their elders can learn from the kids – the joy they have, the sense of adventures they have. Sometimes some of that is missed by Admiral Janeway.

KEVIN: Yeah, I love seeing what Admiral Janeway learns from these kids in Season 2. It's pretty touching.

The first interview that I had with both of you, I asked about another property, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark , the sequel. I love the first one so much. Is there any further update on where things are with the sequel? I know after the writers’ strike, the actors’ strike, all of that…

KEVIN: All that did not help.

DAN: I don't think we can speak definitively on it. We'll see.

It’s still in the works, at least?

KEVIN: Yeah, there's been some hiccups I would say.

DAN: There’s also been conversations.

KEVIN: Dan and I are in active conversations about…

DAN: Kevin! You can't say anything about that. What are you talking about?

KEVIN: All I'm saying is we're in conversations talking about how to keep this franchise alive. We're fighting a good fight for it so that hopefully someday we'll see it.

SpongeBob SquarePants and DORA to star in new European Nickelodeon land theme park

Brand new Nickelodeon Land will open at Turkey's The Land of Legends theme park in January 2025 and feature three themed areas and a new Nickelodeon Hotel and Resort

Mock up of 'Bikini Bottom'

  • 14:39, 27 Sep 2024

A new Nickelodeon Land theme park will open in Turkey in January 2025 featuring popular character appearances from SpongeBob, DORA and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The Land of Legends theme park will be home to Turkey's first Nickelodeon Land and Nickelodeon Hotels and Resorts in the country. The park will feature three brand-new areas, a hotel and the chance to meet Nickelodeon characters.

The new Nickelodeon Land will open at The Land of Legends, Antalya, and will consist of three unique areas – the underwater Bikini Bottom from SpongeBob SquarePants, intergalactic Star Trek: Wild Galaxy, based on Star Trek: Prodigy, and the open-air Adventure Bay PAW Patrol.

Have you been on a theme park-themed adventure? Email us at [email protected]

Rides will include a Jellyfish Jam swing in Bikini Bottom, a 5D cinema in Star Trek: Wild Galaxy and a helicopter-style ride in Adventure Bay PAW Patrol. As part of the 5D cinema in Star Trek: Wild Galaxy guests will be 'disinfected' before entering the cinema and allowed time to examine the spacesuits, weapons and vehicles on display. Once in the theatre, the cinema screen will act as the open back door of the space shuttle and guests will be taken on a 15-minute journey through space.

SpongeBob fans will be able to get to know the marine cartoon character and his friends as well as seeing his iconic pineapple house in Bikini Bottom.

The Nickelodeon Hotel and Resort will feature bright colour schemes, innovative designs and kid-friendly facilities including interactive experiences with characters such at the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Dora. The hotel's 238 rooms and suites have been specially designed in one of five concept themes — DORA, PAW Patrol, SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Star Trek.

Adults may prefer the Anjana Spa, where guests can enjoy holistic therapies, massages and traditional Turkish Hammam. There are also gym and yoga facilities.

The Nickelodeon Hotel and Resort will also include a range of themed restaurants such as Le Spatula, which is inspired by SpongeBob Square Pants.

The Land of Legends theme park is located close to Belek beachside resort and offers holidaymakers an array of attractions including one of the world's longest water slides — Turtle Coaster — as well as a 62-metre-high Hyper Coaster.

Nickelodeon Land is due to open at The Land of Legends in Antayla, Turkey, on January 15, 2025.

Use these tips on your next theme park trip

star trek prodigy nickelodeon

Next time you visit a theme park, you may want to use our top tips to make the most of your adrenaline-inducing day out.

  • Go to the back of the theme park first. Rides at the front will have the longest queues as soon as it opens.
  • Go on water rides in the middle of the day in the summer - this will cool you off when the sun is at its hottest.
  • Download the park's app to track which rides have the shortest queues.
  • Visit on your birthday, as some parks give out "birthday badges" that can get you freebies.
  • If it rains, contact the park. Depending on how much it rained, you may get a free ticket to return.

And Topic Lagoon has one of the world's longest water slides, a heated pool, wave pool, and plenty of sunbathing areas for relaxing.

The Land of Legends is also located close by to the beachside resort of Belek, with sister properties, Rixos Premium Belek and Rixos Park Belek , for those wanting a day relaxing by the ocean.

The Sun's Kate Ferguson recently visited the park .

She said: "Known among Brits as “the Turkish Disneyland” it has dare-devil rides and water park attractions that would satisfy the biggest thrillseekers.

"There are six pools on site — the massive one just behind the beach which tends to be where families decamp for most of the day.
