Exotic Voyages did a great job on our Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos trip
Great experience with Exotic Voyages on my recent trip to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos! I'm from Califonia and was taking a birthday trip with my mom. Top things to do
Feel the spirit of buddhism in luang prabang.
Like many other Asian countries, Laos is home to a wide variety of exquisite temples that are well worth visiting. To get a bird's-eye view of Luang Prabang - home to 33 active gold-covered temples, climb Mount Phousi. While there, check out the enormous Buddhas etched into the cliffs.
Kayak the river
Vang Vieng , which is located next to the Nam Song River, is now regarded as a popular spot for traveling groups and outdoor activities among many foreign tourists. Kayak down the Nam Song at white-water rafting speeds for a thrilling experience. In order to fly over the treetops, pull up to the river's edge, exchange your paddles for a harness, and board a zipline. The journey ends with an exciting steep drop that will make you feel like you'll end up in the river below.
Get lost in Vientiane
Although Vientiane serves as the country's economic hub, this Mekong River city stands out from the bustle of other Southeast Asian cities thanks to its laid-back vibe. With more than 200 Buddha statues, including the extremely stunning gigantic lying Buddha that is 40 meters long, Buddha Park is full of amazing sights that are sure to awe any visitor. One of your unique sensations in the capital city of Vientiane will be feeling as though you are lost in the enchanted world of Hinduism, surrounded by extraordinarily revered statues.
Explore the Horizontal City
The northeast province of Xieng Khouang is known for its famous Plain of Jars, one of the most archaeological impressive sights Laos has to offer. The Plain of Jar is located in the main city of the province named Phonsavanh, a laid-back and beautiful city not only processes great landscapes for adventure trips but also incredible sights, pagodas, villages for cultural tours. The unique image of the Plain of Jars has a 1,000-year-old civilization with evidence of human beings in the past.
Spice things up with Laos cuisine
Lao cuisine has one distinctive feature: very spicy. The majority of foods have slightly more bitterness than sweetness and frequently use raw veggies and fresh herbs. The typical rice cuisine is sticky rice (khao niaow), which is eaten by hand from little baskets. You must pinch off a small amount of rice by hand, roll it into a ball, then dip it in the sauce and enjoy. Laap, a "salad" of minced meat combined with herbs, spices, lemon juice, and chile, is the national dish you should not miss.
Feel the slow pace of local life
In contrast to its neighbors, such as Thailand and Vietnam, where people are constantly in a hurry, Laos has its own style of life, which is leisurely and low-stress. One of the highlights of your exploration of the North is the little but wonderful town of Pakbeng in the Laotian province of Oudomxay . This town, which serves as a meeting place for numerous local hill tribes like the H'mong, Lue, Khamou, and others, is located halfway between Houeixay and Luang Prabang. You can observe natives living their traditional lives in this picturesque area of Laos and be inspired by their calm and uncomplicated way of life.
Set a real-time for unwinding
Whilst the people of Laos are renowned for their hospitality, Muang Ngoi would win as the friendliest town in the entire country. With just 800 residents, it is a tranquil, beautiful village in northern Laos. There are no banks, no internet services, and not even a landline phone in this area so knowing this is precious time for unwinding. You may easily get a sense of local daily life by strolling down the 500-meter-long, dirt road in the village, where roosters can be seen strutting past villagers fixing fishing nets. In this community, swinging a hammock from a balcony could seem like the right or only thing to do, but there are more options than you can do: trekking, paddling, caving, camping, and even kayaking.
Get closer to nature in Pakse
Pakse , the capital of Champasak province in southern Laos, is known for the produce grown by ethnic minority groups on the nearby Bolaven Plateau and sold in Pakse’s colorful markets. The town is also the gateway to the Khmer archaeological site of Wat Phou Champasak, which stretches over the lower slopes of the sacred mountain, Mount Phu Ka. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was built by the founder of the first Khmer empire, is smaller than the more well-known Angkor Wat but is mystical with its tumbled-down pavilions and tall trees. Visitors to Champasak province can also trek on elephants, visit Southeast Asia’s highest waterfall, KhongPhapeng, and experience traditional life on the nearby islands.
Find a perfect peace on Khong Island
Khong Island or Don Khong is an island of southern Laos, located on the Mekong River, in the Si Phan Don. It is a beautiful natural and cultural tourism site and is also famous for rice plantations and fishermen. With its lovely fishing villages, serene monasteries and lush vegetation, the pretty island offers a unique opportunity to experience the peaceful Laotian lifestyle. Besides, magnificent waterfalls also are things the residents of the island are proud to offer their lovely visitors. Some interesting activities you should try to discover on this incredible island are going by dugout canoe through Si Phane Done, crossing to Done Det Island partly by foot, visiting a pretty fishing village.

Luxury Trips & Vacations to Laos
Ancient mysteries, incredible nature and an authentic culture consolidate fully into the living heritage that is Laos.
Slow and relaxing, Laos is a place to focus on the moment, tune into wellness, visit a spa or take in a yoga class.
In the heart of the Indochinese Peninsula of Southeast Asia lie the rolling hills, ancient temples, dense jungles and legendary landmarks of Laos, a land of unspoiled treasures. Nature enthusiasts, foodies, history buffs, outdoor enthusiasts – there is indeed something for everyone here. Central Laos and the capital city of Vientiane on the banks of the Mekong is a trove of Buddhist shrines and broad boulevards, where French colonial flair mixes with traditional Laos culture. The 3rd-century Buddhist temple of Pha That Luang in the middle of the city is a rare joy, completely clad in gold. In the well-preserved northern town of Luang Prabang, more than 30 palaces await your exploration, and in the south, 5th-century Hindu temple complex Vat Phou is a marvel to behold – both are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Laos is topographically diverse in the extreme, offering forests and mountains, underground caves, and rolling tea fields. This diverse landscape presents a marvellous opportunity for eco-touristic pleasures, as visitors hike the protected areas and traverse the hillsides. The diversity continues with the country’s dozens of different ethnic groupings and hill-tribe settlements – a crossroad of Asian cultures – with initiatives that help preserve the communities and their environments.

Let Laos' gentle culture and stunning countryside captivate you
Landlocked Laos is the least visited out of its Southeast Asian neighbours, but its small, enchanting cities, gentle culture, and lush, unspoiled scenery should definitely not be overlooked. Let us take you there with all the style, luxury and local expertise that Jacada can bring; your bespoke itinerary can feature as much or as little as you like, and you can easily combine Laos with Cambodia , Vietnam , Thailand , and beyond for a well-rounded trip.
Tranquil Luang Prabang is set on the banks of the Mekong River and captures the heart of every traveller that visits the old French-influenced city; visit its gilded, picturesque Buddhist temples and rise early to witness the daily procession of saffron-clad monks collecting alms from the local residents. Venture out into the jungle on an elephant trek, and head off the beaten track into the north to stay in one of our favourite rainforest lodges, set in a village by some hot springs. In the sleepy capital Vientiane , spend time wandering past French colonial mansions and watch a fiery sunset over the Mekong. Pre-Angkor ruins draw travellers to Don Daeng and Champasak in southern Laos, while the Four Thousand Islands of the Mekong offer the ideal setting in which to truly unwind and maybe spot the rare pink dolphin.
Witness the daily procession of saffron-clad monks collecting alms from the local residents at Luang Prabang.
Head to Oudomxay to discover lush rain-forests and unearth the traditional Lao lifestyle in friendly tribal villages.
Steal views of water buffalo’s bathing and fishermen flinging nets in Don Daeng.
Soothe your muscles at Baw Nam Hawn hot springs in Muang La.
Attempt to catch a glimpse of the rare Irrawaddy river dolphin on the Mekong river.

Laos is a real hidden gem where ancient Buddhist temples sit alongside elegant colonial buildings, all set against a backdrop of breathtaking natural beauty. Kayak up the Mekong River and trek to spectacular waterfalls one day, then while away the hours sipping the superb local coffee and watching the world go by the next. I truly recommend Laos for a laidback, rural adventure.

Explore Laos
The former capital city of Luang Prabang boasts a multitude of attractions, including vividly-coloured temples, cascading waterfalls, and French-colonial architecture. Wander down the busy streets and discover the ancient monasteries, hunt for bargains in the night markets, and cycle anywhere between the old quarter to the rugged mountains beyond the city limits.
This island is part of the 4,000 islands that make up the picturesque riverine archipelago. Here you can venture out on foot or bicycle and take the time to witness the natural beauty and unspoilt charm of the island, or travel to the nearby town of Champasak to traipse around the pretty wooden houses and small restaurants along the waterfront.
Vientiane retains a laid-back charm bereft of most capital cities, and its compact size makes it easy to explore on foot. There’s a pleasing lack of traffic as a result. Climb atop a replica of Paris’s Arc de Triomphe and enjoy the views from the deck or visit Ho Phra Keo, a scenic temple complex set in immaculate gardens.
Nestled within the fertile rainforest, this region is home to over 500 villages where traditional life still prevails, all waiting to educate you on their languages and customs. Some of our favourite sights around the region include the tranquil Huay Nam Kat Waterfall and the expansive, cathedral-like Chom Ong Cave, from which the Nam Kaeng River flows.

When to visit
Although this is a year-round destination, the best time to visit Laos is during the months of November to April. This period offers warm days and cool nights along with clear skies and lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the country’s natural beauty and engaging in outdoor activities. The temperatures are generally mild, although cooler in the northern regions, making it comfortable for sightseeing and trekking.

The capital city of Laos, Vientiane, still feels like a sleepy city with relaxed charm, tree-lined boulevards, fascinating temples, and colorful markets. This city conjures up exotic images, with the curious mix of Lao, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, French influences.
Morning After breakfast, your guide and driver will pick you up for the further exploration of this charming city. Start with Vat Sisaket , the only temple left intact after the Siamese invasion in 1828. It shelters hundreds of statues of Buddha within its walls.
Continue with Wat Prakeo , now used as a religious museum where you can see Lao and Khmer works of art. It used to host the “Emerald Buddha” that is now on display at Bangkok’s Royal Palace .
Continue to visit the iconic Pha That Luang , a gleaming golden stupa which is perhaps the most important national monument in Laos.
Afternoon After lunch Lao Derm Restaurant, you will uncover other important sites including Buddhist monasteries of Wat Ong Tue and Wat Haysoke . Next, visit Lao National Museum , the charming French Colonial Architecture building, and Wat Si Muang , a Khmer temple with a fascinating legend that still holds great significance among the Laotian community.
Proceed to the Vientiane Central Market of Talat Sao and Talat Kouadin , where major goods are traded, including fresh food, household, textiles, gold, and silver. You may even see ancient souvenirs on display.
End your day at the Patuxai Monument , also called Anousavari, and enjoy a panoramic view over the city from the top. It is Vientiane’s own Arc de Triomphe that is located at the top of Lan Xang Avenue, the Champs Elysees of the Lao capital.
The rest of the day will be at your leisure. You may take a stroll along the Mekong River banks. For those interested, stop and sample some of the delicious snacks and cold drinks on sale at the numerous riverside stalls.

Day 3 : Vientiane – Local Farm & Cooking Class
Morning After breakfast, your private guide will meet you and take you on a fun Tuk Tuk ride to an organic farm on the outskirts of Vientiane . Run by a Lao non-government organization using traditional Lao farming methods, this is the perfect place to try your hand at rice farming.
On arrival, you will be greeted by the friendly farmers. After a short introduction about the farm, change your clothes and it’s time to become a real local farmer in the fields . The farmers will show you how to get your feet wet planting rice seedlings, or if it’s harvest season then cut and thresh your own rice for lunch! Do a spot of fishing, collect fresh duck eggs, learn about organic fertilizer and how it is made, and harvest fresh seasonal organic vegetables and bamboo.
Once you’ve finished the farming activities you will cook up a traditional Lao lunch with the day’s produce. Learn how to cook sticky rice and make papaya salad. Then sit down to enjoy a picnic-style lunch and a well-earned rest.
Afternoon Bid a fond farewell and get back to your hotel in town. En route, pause to visit a local fresh food market to check out the amazing diversity of Lao food. Enjoy a traditional Lao coffee or sample some delicious Lao sweets at the market.
This tour includes participation in farm activities and some walking at a moderate level of fitness. You need to bring a long-sleeved shirt for rice threshing (depending on the season), sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat.
Day 4 : Vientiane – Oudomxay – Muong La Resort
Morning After breakfast and check out of the hotel, meet your private guide and take an essential visit to COPE Visitor Centre , a non-profit organization in Laos which provides prosthetic limbs, mobility assistance and rehabilitation for Lao people who can’t afford it. The war is still heavily present in Laos, the country that experienced the most bombings by the Vietnam War. Still today, a good deal of those unexploded ordnances (UXOs) explode as people work their fields and children play in the countryside. Laos is actively fighting the use of these cluster bombs and the COPE centre will depict and inform visitors on these issues.
Your visit to COPE Visitor Centre will open your minds and your hearts.
Later, your driver will transfer to Wattay Airport for your flight to Oudomxay.
On arrival in Oudomxay, you will be met and transferred to the luxury boutique Muang La Resort for check-in. Hidden in the small village of Muang-La by the river, this resort features 5 wooden villas and 9 traditionally designed guestrooms. Exuding peace tranquillity, and mountain views, the river houses a natural hot spring.
Afternoon After having lunch at the resort, head out to discover the rural life of the Pak La village in Muong La, stroll through the area, and take in the panoramic views over the Nam Pak River . You will learn more about how the Khmu people live in harmony with their environment. The site at Muang La is dominated by the temple of Pha Chiao Sing Kham, which houses a sacred Buddha. According to those responsible for its protection, the statue simply appeared hundreds of years ago and so that the temple is now a sacred place of pilgrimage.
Return to the resort in the late afternoon and spend the remainder of the day at your leisure. Relax in the therapeutic on-site hot springs at the Resort.
Enjoy dinner and spend the night at Muong La resort.

Day 5 : Muang La Resort – Hill Tribe Village Trek
Morning Set off in the morning by 4×4 for a short drive to Pak Khai . The ride offers some magnificent views over the Nam Pak River , terraced rice fields, and many small villages.
On arrival, you will begin a culture and nature trek on small winding paths that locals use between their villages in the jungle. You will arrive at the Khamu village of Wang Wanh where the villagers make sacks from the fibers of local plants. You will be welcomed by a local family who will take you on an in-depth and hands-on learning experience where you will participate in 14 steps of the rice cycle.
After a morning of fun, enjoy your lunch at the farm ‘sala’, giving a 360° panorama of the wonderful countryside in the valley.
Afternoon After some siesta time, you will cross the river on a bamboo raft to travel to the Khamu Village of Vieng Kham . The villagers here are well-known for their weaving skills. Continue to the village of Muang La to visit the local school (closed on Sundays) and the temple of Chiao Pha Kham Sing which houses a sacred Buddha. According to those responsible for its protection, the statue simply appeared hundreds of years ago and so that the temple is now a sacred place of pilgrimage.
Return to the lodge in the late afternoon and spend the remainder of the day at your leisure. Relax in the therapeutic on-site hot springs at the Resort.
Day 6 : Muang La – Further Discovery
Morning After breakfast, take another 4×4 ride on a beautiful road along the Nam Pak River to an Ikhos village and a H’mong village ; two of the many ethnic groups in Laos. Your route climbs to 1,000m above sea level and offers some magnificent views of the stunning mountain scenery.
Your first visit is a completely isolated Ikhos village. The Ikho people are one of the most reclusive communities in Laos, and originate from Yunnan Province in China and Tibet. It is a remarkable experience to glimpse into the culture and lives of the Ikho, in whose mountain villages you will see houses made of wood and bamboo and learn about their way of life and their belief in the spirit world. The Ikho are known for their method of dyeing their clothes using natural dyes made from the plants of the jungle.
Continue to visit the H’mong village and then enjoy a picnic lunch with amazing surroundings.
Afternoon After lunch, return to your resort and spend the rest of the day at your leisure.
Enjoy dinner and spend the last night at Muong La resort.
Day 7 : Muong La – Pak Ou Caves – Luang Prabang
Morning After breakfast and check out of the resort, your guide and driver will collect you from the hotel lobby and transfer you to the Heritage town of Luang Prabang . Along the way, you will pause to visit the village of Ban Na Nyang , which is famous for its traditional cotton weaving. Almost every household has its own weaving loom where the families create beautiful scarves, table cloths, and ornate wall hangings.
Next, you will visit the famous Pak Ou caves which house thousands of Buddha statues of all styles and sizes. There are two caves, both accessed by stairs. The lower cave, Tham Ting, is naturally lit. The upper cave, Tham Phum, is deeper yet easily explored.
After exploring the caves, you will embark on a private boat cruise down the Mekong River for 1.5 hours to Luang Prabang.
Afternoon After enjoying a delicious lunch at Tamarind Restaurant, transfer to check into the luxury Belmond La Residence Phou Vao , an oasis of tranquility. Situated in a lush tropical garden with wonderful views of distant mountains, the hotel is just within 5 minutes of the nearby sleepy town of Luang Prabang.
Later, your guide will meet you and take you to visit Mount Phou Si , the city’s highest point where you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the city and the Mekong River below. It takes you 328 steps to reach the top, and at sunset, the changing colors of the sky are particularly spectacular. The light reflecting on the golden spire of the temple at the top is also beautiful.
Once back to ground level, stop at the awakening Hmong minority people Night Market . It is held daily in the streets around the National Museum. Villagers come here to sell their handicrafts.
Tonight you will enjoy dinner at Mango Tree restaurant . The terrace, weather permitting, is awesome, with umbrellas and century-old trees. It sets in a quiet part of Luang Prabang’s main street, ideal for a cozy and intimate dinner away from the busy life.
Overnight in Luang Prabang Meals: (B/L/D)
Day 8 : Luang Prabang – Full-day City tour
Morning Make sure your cameras and phones are fully charged for today’s highly Instagrammable tour. You will be cruising the temple-lined streets of this charming UNESCO-protected town in a classic vintage car Rolls Royce Shadow 1973 or Mercedes E Class from the 1970s.
Start your day with a visit to the Morning Market , a lively street where locals shop for everything from colorful vegetables and exotic fruits to live frogs.
From the energy of the market, you’ll step into the serene calm of one of the city’s most elaborate monasteries, Wat Mai , and then to the f ormer King’s Palace , where you’ll discover the history and present life of Luang Prabang. Next, head to the ancient Wat Xieng Thong temple , which features a spectacular low sweeping roof. It’s Luang Prabang’s most distinctive and recognized monastery.
Afternoon After lunch at the L’Elephant , the finest restaurant in town, you will visit the UXO Visitor’s Centre to get an incredible insight into the horrific bombings endured by the Lao people and the effect it still has today. The UXO centre is an amazing NGO that does fantastic work, yet just scratches the surface of this little known issue.
Continue to explore the 16th century Wat Visoun temple , best known for its enormous stupa and its collection of old gilded Buddhas.
Pay a visit to the Traditional Art and Ethnology Centre (TAEC)**, the only independent resource center in Laos dedicated to the country’s many and diverse ethnic groups. If time permits, you can visit the Ock Pop Tock Living Craft Center , set serenely close to the Mekong, this beautiful, traditionally styled workshop, where weavers, spinners and batik makers produce top-quality fabrics, offers free tours every half-hour.
Feeling suitably enlightened, end your day with a climb to the top of Mount Phousi , the city’s highest point where you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the city and the Mekong River below. After that transfer back to your resort where the rest of the evening will be at your leisure.

Every morning, hundreds of monks from the various monasteries walk through the streets collecting alms. This ancient ritual is locally known as “tak bat”. After the ritual, pass by the open-air fresh food market and then, return to the hotel for your breakfast.
Later, your private guide and driver will take you out of town to the famous Kuang Si Waterfall, one of the most spectacular swimming holes on the continent. The jungle around the waterfall remains lush and beautiful year-round. The waterfall cycles between placid, turquoise waters during the dry season to the impressive, roaring falls during the rainy season.
Before taking a dip in the beautiful Kuangsi Falls, you will get a behind the scenes experience with the team from Free the Bears . This sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates sun, moon, and sloth bears from bile farms.

The diary provides income and a sustainable future for the Lao people involved. Learn how to milk a Buffalo, cuddle a Buffalo for the perfect selfie and try some incredible ice cream.

17-day visit to Vietnam with Asia Pioneer Travel (APT)
My wife and I just returned from a wonderful first-time trip to Vietnam – thanks to the quality service provided by APT. So many things went well for us. We were able to customize the default itinerary to fit our schedule and sightseeing preferences. We spent a few initial days corresponding via email, phone and WhatsApp with our assigned Travel Designer (Elly), and she answered all of our questions and addressed any concerns we had. She also helped us obtain our e-Visas and purchased domestic airline tickets for us. The hotels provided were excellent – good locations, clean and comfortable rooms, friendly and helpful staff and nice amenities. The hotels also provided very tasty and substantial buffet breakfasts through a wide variety of foods and beverages. What also stood out were the outstanding local guides that accompanied us in HCM City, Hoi An/Hue, Hanoi and Sapa. The guides were professional, friendly and knowledgeable regarding the area history and culture. We learned so much from the guides and they really enhanced our travel experience. They also led us to some great restaurants where we enjoyed the local cuisine. Also, all of the drivers provided were highly skilled and always on-time for pickups. And on top of having an enjoyable trip, we felt the trip cost was very reasonable and affordable. We are so glad we went with APT!
OC Bruin - La Habra, California
Amazing adventure.
Our trip to Thailand planed by Cherry was amazing. She listened to all our wants and made it happen. Three cities in 9 days. It was the most magical trip your our family of four!
Amazing and worth it
My family and I stumbled across Asia Pioneer and we had the wonderful Chloe as our travel agent for our Vietnam/Thailand trip. Everything was organised for us, from the itinerary, to accommodation, tour guides, drivers, flights and activities. It costed quite a bit, however well worth it if you don’t want to worry about having to organise anything.
I highly recommend!!! My only feedback would be that the payment system with Asia Pioneer is not straight forward and they invoice and quote in US $ so if you are from other countries tries the conversion rates and credit card fees etc become quite confusing and it ends up costing more than expected.
They request a 30% deposit upfront which is fine, but then you pay another amount a month th before the trip, and then the final amount in cash on the day of arriving in Vietnam. I recommend you get the cash out in your country before arriving to Vietnam as the ATM’s only allow you to get out a very small amount (3 million vietnamese dong) at a time.
However other than that, highly recommend !!
Tina Gee - Auckland, New Zealand
Amazingly amazing.
Customer Service: The service was amazing from start to finish. APT was in constant communication with me. They were patient, flexible, and accommodating. They understood what I wanted to see and things I wasn’t interested in. They were never pushy. The tour guides they provided were also amazing. Prompt, funny, super informative, and advocated for us every step of the way…sometimes changing our itineraries to better fit our needs. The tour guides also understood that by day 9 we were exhausted and needed some R&R.
Price: The price was very affordable. We were 3 teachers on winter break so you know we’re not made out of $$$. The hotels they provided were affordable and lovely, very close to all the spots.
Vietnam: What can I say? I want to live there!!!
Overall Experience: 5 stars! I will be booking with APT for our next trip. 10 days was not enough!

Best time to visit laos.
Laos is a great place to visit at any time of the year as the weather doesn't vary much – it’s always hot and humid! The coolest time to visit is from November to January. This is also the driest time, and the main festival period, so it’s an interesting time to travel through Laos. The wet season runs from June to October. It rains frequently during this time, temperatures average over 85 degrees Fahrenheit and although some roads may be closed due to flooding, it is a great time for river travel. February to May is drier but hot, with temperatures climbing over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Culture and customs
The population of Laos is made up of more than 100 different ethnic groups, with each having their own distinct clothing, language, customs and way of life. The Lao Loum, who reside in the lowlands along the Mekong, make up the largest ethnic group. Smaller ethnic groups include the Hmong and Mien, both highland dwellers, and the Lao Thoeng, who prefer the lower mountains. Many tribes share cultural similarities with tribes from neighbouring countries, so it’s possible to see Chinese , Vietnamese , Khmer and Thai influences within the dress, food and arts of these people.
Generally, Laotians are known for their laidback lifestyle and calm, steady approach to life. With an emphasis on the simple pleasures of family, food and religion, most people from Laos remain closely connected to their family and village for a lifetime. Most Laotians live in villages, rather than the city, where the sense of community is strong and people are connected to their neighbours and friends. Visiting wats (temples) to make offerings and give alms to monks is a common part of daily life for most, with much respect and reverence reserved for monks.
Buddhist holidays and traditional festivals linked to harvest time and holy periods are commonly celebrated throughout the villages of Laos and are timed according to lunar cycles. With different dates each year, it can be hard to predict the exact timing of these local celebrations, but visiting one can provide great insight into the fascinating culture of Laos.
Eating and drinking
Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.
Laotian cuisine draws on culinary traditions from its neighbors, so visitors will be able to taste the flavors of China, Thailand and Vietnam in the food of Laos.
Things to try in Laos
This spicy meat salad is considered the national dish of Lao. The delicious combination of minced beef, chicken or pork seasoned with chili, lime and mint, served with vegetables and sticky rice is a firm favorite with locals and travelers.
2. Khao Poon
This popular soup of meat, rice noodles, lime leaves, chili, garlic and fish sauce has a few variations. The version made with coconut milk makes the dish similar to a laksa, while the version without coconut milk is a lighter option.
3. Fresh fruit
The markets of Laos have a cornucopia of delicious fruits on offer, either fresh or whipped up in a juice. Pineapple, orange, watermelon, guava and banana are plentiful but why not try more exotic fruits like lychee, longan, rambutan or jackfruit?
The answer to Laos’ heat and humidity is a bottle of locally brewed Beerlao, best served cold at the end of a long day of exploring.
Geography and environment
Landlocked Laos is located in South-East Asia, bordered by China, Thailand , Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar . The topography of Laos is very mountainous, with much of the land being covered in forest and unsuitable for farming. Due to the mountainous terrain, Laos lacks a developed road network, with most locals living in small villages in the highlands, lowlands and along the Mekong River. Visiting Laos is like going back in time to when highways, traffic jams, mass transit systems and skyscrapers didn't exist. Visitors will be awed by the lush landscapes and stunning scenery, which is unlike anywhere else on earth.
History and government
Early history.
It's thought that Laos has been inhabited by people for thousands of years, although written evidence reveals that societies existed in the 9th century. Early society was based on agriculture and prior to the advent of Buddhism in the 16th century, people largely subscribed to animist beliefs and Shiva-worship, with archaeological evidence of this remaining today.
Like its neighboring countries, Laos was ruled by a series of kingdoms and was subject to invasion from surrounding forces from nearby domains. Europeans first arrived in the area in the 1600s, with the Dutch being the first to arrive. Despite this, the French have had the most European influence in the region. After enduring years of invasion and control from neighboring countries, Laos also had French rule to contend with in the late 1800s, when it became a French colony.
Recent history
Laos was controlled by Japanese forces during World War II, was declared an independent state in 1950 and gained full independence as a constitutional monarchy in 1954. The 1960s proved to be a devastating time for the people of Laos, with their nation gaining the dubious honor of being the most bombed country in the world. The United States bombed Laos extensively in an attempt to eradicate North Vietnamese sanctuaries, and sadly contemporary Laos is still dealing with huge amounts of unexploded ordnance (UXO) that is littered throughout the countryside.
A coalition government was set up in 1962, but in 1975 Laos became a Communist state when the king gave up his throne in favor of a president and prime minister being instated. During the late 1970s, many people of Laos fled to neighboring countries as refugees, as trade embargoes from foreign nations led to widespread poverty and disadvantage. By the 1990s, Laos had become a full member of ASEAN and foreign nations had lifted their trade embargoes, which allowed free enterprise to grow.

Does my trip to Laos support The Intrepid Foundation?
Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Laos directly support our foundation partner, MandaLao Elephant Conservation .
MandaLao Elephant Conservation
MandaLao Elephant Conservation was the first non-riding elephant sanctuary in Luang Prabang, and they actively promote ethical elephant care and create jobs in communities in Laos. Donations from our trips help them care for rescued elephants at their sanctuary (including food and veterinary costs) while providing employment opportunities within the local community.
Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

The ancient beauty of Luang Prabang has been inhabited for thousands of years and until 1975, this was the royal capital. Today, this small town’s rich architecture and cultural heritage, which earned UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1995, continues to be one of the most popular areas with tourists. Former glorious palaces, numerous temples or ‘Wats’, and beautiful waterfalls that meet the Mekong River can all be found here.
Despite its popularity with visitors, the environment has retained its authenticity and unique ambiance. At the far northern tip of this incredible town, Wat Xieng Thong (Temple of the Golden City) can be found. Low sweeping roofs, extravagantly gilded decoration, and the remarkable ‘Tree of Life’ glass mosaic are just some of this temple’s exquisite features. On the outskirts of Luang Prabang lies the Phousi market - a lively place where the locals shop daily. If you have a longing for local fruits, this is the place to try them.
Animal lovers need to ensure they stop at the Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre, where it is sometimes possible to assist with a scatter feed by hiding food for the bears. This wonderful sanctuary has rescued over 20 Moon Bears (also known as Asian black bears) from poachers and given them enriching enclosures where they are safely protected and have all sorts of play equipment to enjoy. Wooden paths give visitors the perfect viewing spots from a safe distance.
Another natural wonder is that of Kuang Si Falls, the largest waterfall in Luang Prabang, with three tiers culminating in a 50-metre drop. Hiking trails tailored to varying abilities allow you to get up close to marvel at this spectacular sight.
Sticky rice (khao niaw) can be a meal in itself but is also eaten with accompanying sauces and side dishes. You will find this is the go-to staple of Laos and eaten daily. Soups and stews are also common, with noodle soup being a particular favourite that is consumed at any time of day, including breakfast.
In terms of the flavours to expect, Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine has had a heavy influence. In contrast to these spicy noodle and rice-based dishes, Laos also lives with the legacy of its French rule in the 1900s. Consequently, khao jee (baguettes) filled with meat, vegetables and chili paste are found all over the country. Laap or larb is another popular meal; a salad consisting of ground meat, with a lime, garlic and herb dressing, mixed with roasted rice. Tam mak houng (papaya salad) is also worth tasting, combining shredded papaya with fish sauce, chilies and lime juice, among other ingredients, and served with noodles. Barbecued meat and grilled river fish eaten from bamboo skewers, giant fried prawns with spring rolls, and kaipen - sundried sheets of freshwater green algae and sprinkled with sesame seeds - add to the snack list.
When it comes to desserts, sticky rice once again dominates where it is typically combined with mango, coconut or banana to make a variety of treats. Banana rice pudding, baked coconut rice pudding, coconut dumplings, coconut custard cake, and a vast range of tropical fruits also make fabulous desserts.
Beerlao is beer made from jasmine rice, hops and yeast, that is both sipped by locals and exported across the world. Lao lao is the regional equivalent to whiskey, while drinking lao hai is very similar to sake. Making the most of the easily accessible fruits in Laos, coconut milk and fruit juices are readily available.
Other common soft drinks include milk, tea (usually served with sweet condensed milk and poured over ice), coffee and sugar cane juice. Avoid drinking tap water (or ice cubes made from tap water) and stick to bottled water instead.
As a landlocked country, Laos is surrounded by Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, China and Vietnam. With a mountainous and hilly landscape, only a small area of the flat, low land can be farmed. The tropical monsoon climate has encouraged the growth of northern tropical rainforests that include bamboo and banana plants.
In contrast, its forest-covered mountains reach a height of over 2,800 metres. Wildlife is abundant with large mammals such as bears, rhinos, elephants, tigers, deer, gibbons and monkeys being among the inhabitants. Reptiles and amphibians are just as diverse and plentiful, with everything from snakes, frogs and turtles living here. Meanwhile bird species include storks, hornbills, ibises and woodpeckers. Many of the animal species living in Laos are endangered, including the Irrawaddy Dolphins, also known as Mekong River Dolphins.

Countries Visited
Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, vientiane – glories of the capital.
The wide boulevards of Vientiane lead to historical temples and Buddhist monks trail robes of burnt sage. Temples glitter amongst the emerald hues of the canopy. Dragon statues shimmering with gilded exteriors lunge out of temple doorways. The scent of frangipani and tamarind blend with the aroma of fresh pastries drifting out of the French cafes. Your flight lands at Wattay International Airport, where your private transfer greets you upon your arrival. Entering into the heart of the historic center, you pass antique French villas dating back to the colonial days and waters of the Mekong River rushing against the edges of the city.
You take a moment to settle into the comforts of your hotel, situated inside a renovated French villa that offers the charms of the city’s past, accentuated with contemporary luxuries. Your guide greets you in the lobby, eager to introduce you to the Laotian capital on a walking tour around Pha That Luang, the most important monument in the country. The golden stupa represents Laos’s sovereignty, along with the embodying of a grand symbol of the Buddhist religion. The aroma of blossoming frangipani blends with the scent of incense.
The golden exterior of the shrine flickers in the passing sunlight. Your guide explains the legend surrounding the complex, which states that missionaries from India erected the stupa in the 3rd century to enclose a piece of Buddha’s breastbone. The shrine reaches a height of nearly 150 feet with a cloister measuring more than 275 feet. Images of Buddha adorn the walls. Your guide points to the statue of Jayavarman VII, the king who converted the Khmer empire to Buddhism during the era of Angkor.
What's Included:
Vientiane – At the Heart of Vientiane’s Temples
In the morning, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee emanates from the French-style cafes. Tables and chairs adorn the cobbled walkways, offering locals and visitors a space to enjoy the refreshing morning air. The scent of croissants baked to a golden brown accompanies the decadent fragrance of melting chocolate from pain au chocolat, chocolate croissants. Your guide meets you at the hotel after breakfast, once again keen on leading you through Vientiane and Laos’s remarkable history. After visiting the oldest temple in the city, you make your way to the Wat Ong Teu Mahawihan.
The structure was originally erected in the 16th century over a religious site first occupied in the 3rd century. The government rebuilt the temple in the 20th century after the Siamese-Laos war. The roof slopes downward and presents an amalgamation of artistic, architectural styles from around Asia. A stunning bronze image of Buddha is situated in the temple. It is the largest statue of Buddha in the country, reaching a height of 19 feet. The figure is seated with hands at rest on his lap with palms facing outward to connote fearlessness.
Bright yellow and red accents provide captivating embellishments to the temple. The fragrant incense burning inside the shrine offers hints of sandalwood to accompany the shimmering bronze figure of the Buddha, flanked on either side by mirroring statues representing a standing Buddha. Columns supporting the roof resemble intricate lotus flowers made to look as though they have sprouted from the ground and blossomed into the ceiling. Students from around Laos wander the grounds, eager to learn the teachings of Buddha from the Deputy Patriarch of the Laos monastic order.
Luang Prabang – Discovering the Imperial Capital and Culture
In the morning, the coffee houses and cafes of Vientiane open their doors to the aroma of baking baguettes and enticing almond croissants. The streetlights over the cobbled walkways turn off, replaced by the drifting sunlight spreading across Vientiane’s Arc de Triomphe, known as the Patuxai. The structure crowns the commercial district with surrounding blossoming flowerbeds. After breakfast, you pass the dramatic figure en route to the airport for your flight north to Luang Prabang. The city rises out of the jade-colored trees set between the encircling mountain summits.
The 33 shrines of the city flicker with golden hues as they rise above the canopy. Monks in saffron robes walk along the footpaths amongst the sleepy village ambiance set at nearly 2,300 feet above sea level. Luang Prabang was the royal capital of the kingdom until the 16th century. French villas and remarkable temples add to the natural beauty of the landscape, making it the perfect destination for spiritual contemplation in the country’s main Buddhist learning center. Your private transfer collects you at Luang Prabang International Airport and escorts you to your gorgeous accommodations overlooking the shores of the Mekong River.
After settling into the city, your guide escorts you from the hotel lobby to the Wat Xieng Thong, the monastery of the golden city. The layered, sloping roof of the temple resembles a bird preparing to take flight. The red tinge of the wood complements the dramatic golden hues of the façade. The original structure was erected in the 16th century. The Red Chapel contains a reclining Buddha dressed in black. A ceremonial carriage glinting with the golden hues of red-tongued serpents decorates one of the galleries. The Tree of Life mosaic provides an elaborate display of artistry representing the story of Buddha.
Luang Prabang – Waters of the Mekong
Locals set out along the cobbled walkways of the historic city at dawn. They take off their shoes and socks before kneeling on mats they brought with them. Monks form a daily procession amongst the devout, offering blessings for alms. Locals offer rice, cookies, and snacks to the passing monks for their single meal of the day. The majestic ambiance emanates from the drifting aroma of incense and colorful display of devotion. After breakfast, you make your way along the Mekong River, the most important water route in the country that originates at the Lasagongma Spring and which flows until reaching the South China Sea. You board a small riverboat and drift downstream, passing the verdant forests and sensational mountain peaks. Sporadic villages rise along the riverbanks on stilts.
The Mekong River is cool and refreshing when you dip your fingers into the current. The trees and fields along the bank turn to limestone cliffs. Around 15 miles upriver from Luang Prabang, you arrive at Pak Ou Cave, which stands for “Caves of a Thousand Buddha’s.” A steep, white stairway contrasts the encompassing dark limestone. The lower cave contains a group of Buddha statues edging the cave mouth, offering layers of sage robes wrapped around each figure to embellish the enchanting panorama of the riverbanks, undulating canopy, and distant mountain peaks. The upper cave is located more than 50 feet above the riverbank and was carved nearly 165 feet into the rock face. The serene figures of Buddha provide different meanings based upon their position. You find a wooden figure reclining, which stands for enlightenment.
Luang Prabang – Around Turquoise Pools
In the morning, locals venture to their favorite cafes located on the banks of the Mekong River. The aroma of Laotian coffee fills the air, accompanied by the sweet scent of banana fritters fried to order. The sweetness of condensed milk added to the strong, rich coffee provides a perfect balance beloved by locals. After breakfast, your guide leads you outside of Luang Prabang to Kuang Si Falls. Rice fields and captivating mountain peaks offer a remarkable scenic drive. The three-tiered cascade has a spectacular drop of nearly 165 feet. The sound of splashing water echoes through the forest canopy before you discover the turquoise and jade hues of the shimmering pools set beneath the falls.
The pools descend, flowing with curtains of beaded water along small tiers adding up to more than 15 feet in height. The water is delightfully cool and refreshing against your fingers. You can dip into the pools for a swim or relax on the banks, listening to the powerful rush of nature. After enjoying the waters of the Kuang Si Falls, you make your way to a local village blending eco-friendly travel with ethnic heritage. Fishermen stand waist-deep in the Mekong and cast nets into the water. Thatched, sloping-roofed huts rise out of secluded rice fields. The community wears traditional garments woven by hand and produces rice, bananas, sugar cane, and sesame, with their homes nestled in the foothills of the forested mountains.
Luang Prabang – Laos with Locals
French colonial charms blend with the remnants of the imperial prestige in Luang Prabang. In the morning, a local cafe opens its doors to decorations that highlight the colonial past, from a gramophone to antique radios, accompanied by the enticing aroma of Laotian coffee. After breakfast, you venture into the countryside once more, this time making your way to the traditional village of Phone Say. Women work with textiles and men make weave traps to catch fish on the Mekong. Chickens cluck around the wood porches, shaded by the overhanging thatched roofs. Looms clack and rattle as the women move the cloth through the antique machine.
The cloth creates drapes of marvelous colors and intricate patterns. The village atmosphere takes you worlds away from the streets of Luang Prabang. You return to the city streets and in the evening take to the Handicraft Night Market. The aisles bustle with locals and visitors alike. Vendors dangle their handmade scarves and unique paintings for passersby to see. Elegant blankets resemble the textile patterns you saw in the village earlier in the day. Ceramics and bamboo lamps promote a connection to the culture. An elephant figurine stands for good luck, and the colorful umbrellas have become an iconic image of the marketplace. The aroma of succulent cuisine, from roasted fish with lemongrass to spicy green papaya salad emanates from the food stalls.
Luang Prabang – Morning in Luang Prabang
Farmers take to their fields in the cool air of the morning. Water buffalo plow through the crops to help till the land, churn the soil, and create better conditions in which they can cultivate. The farmers wear woven hats to shield their faces from the returning sunlight and tropical heat. They follow the various stages of rice production and crush fresh sugar cane to make sweet juice. In the city, the Palace Museum shimmers with opulent white walls and gilded sloped roofs. Thin palm trees shade the surrounding walkways leading to the brightly colored murals of the main hall.
The structure was erected in 1904 and retains a sense of wonder in its architecture, preservation, and connection to the people of Laos. A captivating 2,000-year-old statue of Buddha sits in a newly erected pavilion and shines with solid gold. The sounds of rushing water drift from the riverbanks. The scent of banana pancakes and sweet Laotian coffee emanates from the cafes. When you are ready, your private transfer meets you at the hotel and escorts you to Luang Prabang Airport for your flight home.

The biggest influence on Lao culture is Buddhism, which plays a role in the country’s arts, music and literature. Buddhism remains an integral part of daily life and religious festivals are important events throughout the year. Every day, people can be seen giving alms to monks and going to temple to pray and give offerings.
With its dense forests, limestone caves and endless waterways, Laos is a dream destination for intrepid travellers seeking an off-the-beaten-track corner of Asia.
Whether it’s kayaking, cycling, rock climbing, ziplining between tree houses or exploring temple ruins – you can choose your own adventure in the ‘land of a million elephants’.
If you fancy yourself a Lara Croft or Indiana Jones type then Wat Phu, the ancient Khmer temple ruin in Champasak province, is a must see. Explore ornate crumbling temples and palaces, which are stunningly situated along the slopes of the Phu Pasak range. Though on a much smaller scale than Angkor Wat, Wat Phu is a Unesco World Heritage Site that is delightfully free of crowds. Base yourself in sultry Champasak village nearby, where you can enjoy a spa, fine digs, open-air cinema and a slow riverine pace.

Huong Pham, Operations Manager of Luxury Travel Ltd.,
Luang Prabang, a former royal capital and now a World Heritage site listed by UNESCO, is perhaps the highlight as it is the city of the Buddha of Peace and lies at the confluence of the Mekong and Khan rivers in the mountainous north. This sleepy former capital is home to hundreds of saffron-clad monks who inhabit its more than 30 pagoda-like temples. Yet it also offers a growing number of chic hotels, many of which are housed in refurbished French-colonial buildings. There is also a wide array of outdoor restaurants, which offer mouth-watering fusion dishes.
