Konni-Adavi Travel Guide

One of the major reasons why tourists flock to Konni and Adavi in the Pathanamthitta district is because it is a training hub for elephants and has some really adventurous coracle rides. If you are planning your trip to Pathanamthitta, here’s a travel guide that will help you to plan your Konni-Adavi itinerary easily.

  • Elephant Kraal

Konni-Adavi Travel Guide

Localities call this place Aanakoodu. Elephant Kraal is a home designed to accommodate and train 4-5 elephants. When it was originally found in 1810, it was a place to keep captured elephants. The current structure that you see today was built in 1942 and it houses lost, orphaned, abandoned and hurt baby elephants. The large house structure is made out of wood called Kambakam. This architecture itself is a sight to behold. There was an elephant named Samyuktha, who was from the Konni Elephant Training Centre. It was gifted to the Republic of Portugal as a mark of friendship and co-operation with India.

The elephant training centre in Konni is located 10 km from the Pathanamthitta town. They are open from 07.30 AM to 05.00 PM every day, except on Mondays. The entry fee is INR 40 for adults and INR 15 for children above the age of five.

  • Gavi Rainforest

Gavi Rainforest

Our Konni-Adavi Travel guide is will be incomplete if we don’t have exploring Gavi in it. Gavi is a small village in the Pathanamthitta district. It is an eco-tourism spot since Kerala Forest Development Corporation maintains cardamom plantations all over. The Gavi forest , which is the main attraction of the place, is home to different species of animals, birds, insects and whatnot. As you travel through the 90 km stretch of forest area, there will be vehicle inspections at various check posts. Throughout the journey, you will come across five dams that come under the Sabarigiri hydroelectric project .

Personally, we would want you to travel through Gavi Rainforest via a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus. There’s a bus at 6:30 AM and 12:30 PM from Kumily that goes through the forest. But if you’d like to explore the place at your pace, you have to make an advance online booking and reach the Angamoozhi forest check post before 8.30 AM.

  • Coracle Boating

Konni-Adavi Travel Guide

Have you ever been on a coracle or bowl boat ride? If not, head over to Adavi to experience it. Many travellers visit the Mudommuzhi coracle ride centre to hop on a ride. A 30-minute coracle boating is just INR 500 rupees. The ride is even better during the rainy season. You’ll feel the movement of the coracle when the rower does a rotatory and up and down movement midway. That’s definitely something you will enjoy.

  • Treetop Bamboo Huts

Treetop Bamboo Huts in Adavi

As part of the forest department’s Konni eco-tourism, visitors can stay on treetop bamboo huts in Adavi. The huts are built on banks of the Kallar River. A night’s stay here will cost you INR 4,000.

This travel guide is specially curated for those visiting Konni and Adavi in Pathanamthitta. Hope you enjoy it!

Konni Eco-Tourism Centre

Sajith Gopinath 18 months ago Please take note that this centre is open everyday except Monday. Good place to go with your kids. Children could learn about elephants, their genesis, classification etc. But there is not much, maybe in an hour you could pack off. The baby elephant is adorable.

Retso Reddevil 14 months ago Was a nice experience. Good for a day out with kids to see the elephants up close and personal. There is a kids play area as well however not maintained properly. Overall a good visit.

Jerin Sam 13 months ago If you are in Pathanamthitta you can visit this place hassle free with your kids. For adults who don't have any expectations on this place, then you won't be disappointed. There is an entry fee for adults of 40 ₹and kids 5-10years 15₹, also if you carry a camera they add an additional fee . All together there are only 5 elephants currently including one baby elephant to see. Before there was elephant safari and we can touch elephants now they revoked the opportunity to feed them or touch them or for elephant safari. You can watch them chained in their shelter from a distance. There is a museum which displays weapons used in ancient times to catch wild elephants and the fossils in the exhibition hall are quite interesting to see, but feels like missing more information and all together in a tiny room. There is a store in the site where you can buy some handmade artcrafts, native medicines, wild honey etc. Also, there is a coffee shop inside. Another attraction in the property is a small area of children's park but most of them are not maintained on time and broken iron rods, for kids they're taking money from the visitors but not maintained anything at the premises well. At least do maintenance on time for the kids who visit this park

N.B. The timetable is based on our last updated data on January 27, 2024 .

The forests, a repository of rich biopersity were constituted into Konni Reserve Forests by the Maharaja of Travancore way back in 1897, are among the oldest reserve forests in the State. Managing locations of scenic importance in forest areas frequently visited by nature enthusiasts with the active involvement of local population is a new trend in tourism management, popularly known as eco tourism and Konni is ideally suited for it. Developing visitor locations in the forest tracts of Konni-Achencoil forests and developing Konni Elephant Camp as a facilitation center is the concept behind “ Konni Eco Tourism Project”, conceived and developed jointly by Kerala Forest Department and Kerala Tourism Department. Elephant is at the nucleus of the entire project.

Elephant museum The facilities developed at Konni as part of eco tourism activities include elephant viewing, elephant feeding, elephant ride, watching elephant bath etc. An elephant museum, which is planned to be developed as a complete natural history museum based on elephant, also is set up. The project site is designed to be a zero waste center. The elephant dung is converted into biogas and the fiber in the dung is converted into hand made paper, which is an eco friendly product. The plastic waste is planned to be converted into recycled product. Outlets for sale of non-wood forest products and other eco friendly materials are also provided in the center. The elephant camp at Konni serves as a hub of forest-based eco tourism activities in southern Kerala. Various locations in forest areas also have been developed, which can be accessed through trekking in forests.

Half-day trek takes visitors to locations like Kurichi, Chavarpandy etc., which are locations in evergreen forests. Peruvally in Kallar River is another enchanting location for relaxation after half day trekking. Kattathi, Kottampara and Aluvamkudy are locations, which can be accessed in one day trekking through sylvan forests. Manalar-Kumbhavurutty in Achencoil is a rejuvenating waterfall deep inside the forest.

Forests in and around Konni were originally inhabited by aboriginals, belonging to the Malampandaram tribe. The tribe maintained unique ethnic culture, characterized by highly developed architectural and sculptural skills. This is evident from the remains of very old temples, which are seen even in the inaccessible tracts. The forested tract in this eco tourism destination provides the right climate and environment for the development and sustenance of perse flora and fauna, which include a variety of medicinal herbs.
