Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Barefoot since 1988

In 1988, Barefoot Billy established himself as the best darn suntan lotion salesperson in Key West. But Billy felt there was something greater calling to him. In 1992, a Key West legend was born: the Barefoot Billy’s Island Jet Ski Tour. Some say Billy had a unique vision to be the first to offer an around-the-island jet ski experience…others say it was a tourist on a jet ski rental that just kept going and going.

Today, Barefoot Billy’s has grown to also offer our popular Catamaran Cruises, all kinds of Land and Beach rentals, and our expert island concierge services to connect you to all the best Key West has to offer. It turns out Billy was right, there’s more to a great Key West Vacation than just suntan lotion. And with our locations in Casa Marina, The Reach, Marriott Beachside, and Garrison Bight Marina you can find us virtually everywhere!

The Original Jet Ski Tour

The best way to experience key west, over 2,000 excellent reviews read more customer reviews or leave your own.

I’m so happy that I booked this tour through the Marriott it was so much fun! They left right from our beach so it was extremely convenient! We booked for the 11 o’clock and there was nobody on a tour for us so we had a great private tour! Nick Bowie was so nice and accommodating my dad is 77 and didn’t go as fast as us but he would always check on him to make sure he was ok! Thanks for making our trip so memorable!!!!! Truly appreciated! Guys you must book!

My daughter, her boyfriend, and I all rented jet skis and they were so accommodating... The tour was worth it for sure. Both educational, yet they gave us plenty of time to ride around and have fun too!

We decided to take a Sunset Cruise and it was amazing! Beautiful view, lots of interesting facts, GREAT food and drinks all included. It was just what we needed after a long day of checking out Key West. The captain and first mate were great. I highly recommend booking through Barefoot Billy's!

Tour was awesome! Never felt unsafe! Jet ski's are well kept and in great shape(especially for rentals). Max our guide was great and very entertaining(note to his boss, give him a break if he's ever late). I recommend this tour to anyone visiting key west. Best bang for your buck!!

Our jet ski tour guide was Max and he was very knowledgeable about the places we stopped on our journey around Key West. We also had some free time to play around on the jet skis! The only downfall for me was my husband's went faster than mine when I tried to race him, haha. Def a great time!

First time on a jet ski and we took a double wave runner around Key West. Awesome time and highly recommended. Derek was a great guide through the water, with a welcoming staff (Bob) onshore. You won’t be disappointed. Thanks guys for a great time!

Hands down a must if you are looking for fun! We did a tour around Key West with John. He was excellent and made sure everyone was safe and having fun. It was a 2 hour trip and we stopped multiple times along the way to hear some history and fun facts.

Our cruise was spectacular! The water was gorgeous and we saw lots of dolphins. Some came right next to our boat and even swam underneath it! Then we went to another part of the ocean and snorkeled in the coral reef, the largest in the USA. We saw tons of colorful fish, it was like being in an aquarium!

Top 5 airlines flying to key west.

Loyal Delta traveler, but last nights flight was a train wreck. Seated in 1B after multiple delays. Then we couldn’t takeoff because of an issue with the passenger that was ‘not in compliance’ and had to deplane along with the threat if they did not deplane, all the passengers would be required to do so. Finally they were escorted off, but the experience threw off the crew. Disruptive for everyone. Service was a mess, televisions didn’t work, bathroom door kept swinging open during the entire flight whenever empty …

My flight was cancelled twice and the third time I tried to rebook it online I cancelled the flight because it looked like I would get a refund to my credit card. Instead I now have a credit. I was also on hold for three hours waiting for a representative and then disconnected. I will never fly delta again.

Awful. Flight was continuously getting delayed and gates kept changing without any reason. Flight was delayed for more then 3 hours

5-hour delay due to storms in Tanoa and airspace restricted by Miami traffic controllers.

I would fly again the whole experience was great. The only feed back I can give that they don't do that American Airlines does is the crew there is more humorous with boarding and thank their passengers. It makes it more fun to fly with them. I would however fly Delta again.

Horrible. This was not first class. This was a connecting flight whi h was late. My original flight never came. I hated the fact that delta gave me a connecting flight from New York to Orlando Florida. No meals and the television screens were not working. There wasn't even any power to charge your phones. This is NOT FIRST CLASS DELTA!!! Do better next time!

They did a fine job. Can't wait to use Delta in the future.

Seat back monitors and outlets were dead and not working.

The experience was good and the flight departed on time and landed early

The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.

First time flying with them and will definitely fly again in the future. Crew was so nice and friendly, fought was seamless. They are simple planes, no entertainment, but it’s fine for a short flight or if you have personal devices Rates are competitive, and they did so well with keeping the flight on time after a tropical storm, where other airlines had delays and cancellations.

They boarded passengers that sat in the back of the plane first, making boarding very efficient.

I didn't even take this flight. My plans changed and I couldn't get ahold of customer service and the website kept breaking down during the attempt to change the flight. I wound up taking another airline entirely and eating the cost.

The worst flying experience ever 3 delays. No accommodations. Had to deboard the plane after being delayed.

Posted a 20minute delay but didn’t delay at all. Caused boarding issues and confusion. Also, didn’t release baggage. Took over an hour and 20 minutes to get luggage.

Flight was good, boarding was a breeze, flight attendants were friendly and professional. There was a medical issue with another passenger and the crew handled it in a calm and professional way.

The net issue I had was with the gate agent. We had added a carryon to our boarding pass when we checked bags. When I got to the boarding gate the agent was rude asking why I had a backpack - I said I added it - even had an orange tag on it. She ripped my tag off and swung her monitor around to show me how she was right- saying it isn’t wasn’t listed - only a checked bag. I explained again that I wasn’t sure what the issue was but I wouldn’t have an orange tag if I hadn’t added it. Then she finally checked my husband’s boarding pass and found that the agent at checkin had added my carryon to his boarding pass instead of mine. She sent me on my way without my orange tag. Was a bit embarrassing for me the tone she used with me assuming I was trying to get away with something.

Gate agent asked if I could switch seats so a family could sit together. Agent moved me to a seat in the front of the plane, no charge. It was easy. The agent did a great job.

Great seat space. However food and drink prices outrageous. Jabbing to pay for a carry on bag or stuck paying at the gate too much.

Every Allegiant Air flight I've ever taken has been delayed. This flight was delayed a full 2 hours. It was excuse after excuse after excuse. It was a flight from southern Florida. They made us board the plane on time, but made us wait for 2 hours on the tarmac. Because the engines were kept shut off, so was the air conditioning. One can only imagine how hot the air was in the cabin over those 2 hours on the tarmac, while in the hot Florida sun. Just terrible.

The plane was delayed ~ 40 minutes. Communication could have been better. The entertainment was poor. We were not offered headsets by the flight attendants. The arm rest pad did not work properly, thus, I could not select what I wanted to watch.

The flight was mostly on time, smooth and deplaning was quick. Baggage was really quick at the claim. Comfort was so-so and I paid for economy plus. It was still too crowded and why was a family of 5 scattered all around the plane?

Pot and crew did a tremendous job landing in Savannah in the middle of the tropical storm. !!

Exceptional, I’d like to specifically recognize Robert for his outstanding customer service. He is professional, pleasant, and personable.

Our flight was delayed several times. It left 9 hours after scheduling. We had to sleep in the airport.

We boarded and buckled and then deplaned due to no pilot. Had to wait over 3 hours for a new pilot. Not weather related, just poor management.

Flying to anchorage would have been cool but the weather got in the way

Didn't make it dir to delays - no support from United staff

A/C still wasn't working. Luckily it was only a 14 minute flight

A/C wasn't working. Made the 1.25 hour flight seem like 4 hours! Even at altitude it didn't cool down.

Flight departed on time and arrived a bit early. Can’t go wrong with that! And makes a travel experience go so well

WiFi wasn’t working on the flight, several delays and gate changes, ended up taking off 3 hrs later

The flight was quick which gave me more time to get to my other flight.

Terrible. We had about a 3 hours delay which led to us missing our connecting.

It was the worst experience ever. Cabin temperature cold, for which they did not have any blankets upon my asking. We paid $125 extra for each passenger to get extra space sits; the sits were ridiculously small, tight, and uncomfortable! The flight attendant dropped ice on me and my sister! All in all, American Airlines deserves below zero!

My flights had excessive delays, alleged mechanical problems, and overall terrible customer service

The inability to be flexible when you need to change a Basic Economy flight, when your company demands you book through a third party, causes raw feelings about the whole experience. A major airline should realize business and personal plans change all the time. I must save my company money on travel. Even if you have to charge me for the change, I get it. But being so rigid with a policy is not the best customer service.

Absolutely the worst experience. We were 5 hours delayed due to mechanical issues and a crew timing out. We were not offered any concession. When I asked for a meal voucher, they gave me $12. You can get a bottle of water for that at the airport. Offensive.

Departure down was really rough and ended up getting motion sickness on the flight

The Airline was not prepared for weather delays. We were held up due to an incoming flight being delayed and so we did not have a flight crew. This caused an extra delay for departure by 2 hours.

Nothing about this flight was good. They are always cancelling or grossly delayed. We were delayed for 45 minutes for no apparent reason with no explanation or anything we could see and I missed my connection to Durham NC. I was on my way to my best friends memorial and funeral. Now I'll missed them both!!

Total disaster! The easiest flight was kept delayed till … cancelled! And before official announcement of the flight cancellation I was offered to join ongoing boarding to FLL so I had to change all my traveling plans, have lost my car reservation and a payed spot at the meeting I was going for to begin with! I had to no show to my flight back, because it was from different airport again!

The worst experience we had traveling. The worst experience we have had traveling. The service is lousy, I will NEVER choose this airline again.

Never in time always late, even on arrival gate not ready so waited on tarmac another 45 min

Flight canceled 11 hours after being delayed. Miss annual family vacation because of this

This was a short flight so food was not offered. The stewardess was great at giving water out. The baggage check at the airport was hideous. One person was untrained and had asked a question. The other two people were just dealing. Someone could have worked the line and said you must have a luggage tag and you must have confirmation. We waited for some people at the counter for 20 minutes because they couldn't find their reservation or they were missing their luggage tags. We were in line an hour and 20 minutes had to run to her gate just to find out our flight was delayed 40 minutes. The silver air website never updated with status changes on the phone. Horribly irresponsible flight company.

I like that the crew member offered to hand me my carry in after I walked up the stairs

This Airline is horrible. I never made it to Orlando. Left after waiting for this flight since 11:45am. This flight was delayed 15 times up until 10:30pm. Boarded twice after pilot reported issues with the plane. After the the second boarding the pilot now reported ground stop in Orlando due to weather which was now at almost 5pm. This is ridiculous that passengers have to sit for all this time dealing with so many issues. Why wasn’t there another plane brought in before the weather became the third issue. Will never use this airline again. Awful. I hope I get my refund.

The flight attendant said I didn’t have a seat on the flight and made me miss the flight after 8 delays! When in fact I did have a seat and they sent me to a different airport with a different airline for the trip home! Never again!

Boarding started earlier but was not updated on any screen. We only heard the overhead call for final boarding. The plane sat on the tarmac for over an hour after landing.

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Matryoshka doll painting

There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Superb Service & Dining

Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.

Evidence Shows ‘Hand to Mouth’ Production of Russia’s Advanced Weapons

A report by independent investigators said that Russian cruise missiles were used in combat sometimes just weeks after rolling off the factory floor.

  • Share full article

Firefighters hose down a destroyed children’s hospital.

By John Ismay

Reporting from Washington

The Russian cruise missile that slammed into a children’s hospital in Kyiv last month left behind clues about Russia’s defense industry after more than two years of war.

The missile, a Kh-101 filled with about 1,000 pounds of explosives, was made this spring before the attack, according to a report released on Friday by a nongovernmental organization that examined remnants of the missile. That suggests Russian forces are using weapons like it as soon as they roll off the production line, the group said.

But it is also proof that Russia has continued to produce advanced weapons despite Western-led sanctions aimed at slowing their production.

The July 8 attack on the hospital killed two people and injured more than 30, including eight children, according to the hospital’s director . It was one of the worst days of violence against Ukrainian civilians in months as Russian forces targeted cities across the country.

The Kh-101 is the Russian military’s most advanced cruise missile, launched from bombers in Russian and Belarusian airspace . Ukraine has shot down many of them , using air defense missiles like the Patriot supplied by the United States and other NATO members. Some of the missiles, however, have managed to slip through Ukrainian defenses.

Parts of the missile that hit the hospital were examined in Kyiv on July 30 by investigators from Conflict Armament Research, an independent group based in Britain that identifies and tracks weapons and ammunition used in wars around the world.

The team decoded production markings on several remnants, which were collected by Ukrainian authorities.

“The missile was made in the second quarter of 2024,” Damien Spleeters, who leads the group’s operations in Ukraine, said in an interview. “So that means between April 1 and June 30, 2024, and given that the attack was on July 8, that means the missile was made between eight days and 12 weeks before the strike .”

Since November 2022, the group’s investigators have examined fragments from 12 Kh-101 cruise missiles and found that most of the weapons had been fired within about two months of the date they were manufactured. Two of the Kh-101s the investigators analyzed at the end of 2022 had been made in 2018 and 2019, but all of those they have seen since then were made just months before being launched — evidence Mr. Spleeters said could indicate that Russia’s military quickly exhausted its prewar stockpile.

Whether the sanctions imposed on Russia have succeeded in hampering its production of weapons is unclear, Mr. Spleeters said.

“It’s possible that they don’t have access to the components but have enough stockpiles to keep going in terms of production,” he said of Russia’s defense industry. “It seems they were still able to make the Kh-101 as they were before, but it’s a very hand-to-mouth type of production.”

“They make them and they use them almost right away,” he added. “And that makes them vulnerable to any disruptions in their supply chain.”

The Kh-101 first entered service with Russian forces in 2012 and has a range of about 1,550 miles, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies , a Washington think tank.

Conflict Armament Research has been traveling to Ukraine since 2018 to examine Russian weapons being used in the conflict.

Months before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the group found that separatist fighters in areas occupied since 2014 were receiving shipments of weapons traced to Russia .

In June 2022, the group found that most of the electronics in Russia’s military hardware contained chips and semiconductors made by companies with headquarters in the United States and other Western nations.

Later that year, investigators documented how Russia used parts produced by Western companies to make relatively low-tech electronic components for its most advanced weapons, including guidance systems for the Kh-101.

Russia expended thousands of cruise and ballistic missiles against Ukraine in the first two and a half months of its invasion in 2022, but after an initial flurry of attacks their use fell sharply, U.S. and British officials said at the time.

The use of top-line cruise missiles so soon after production probably indicates that Russia has to limit combat plans based on how many of those weapons its factories can make, Mr. Spleeters said, rather than having a deep enough inventory to choose targets based on evolving battlefield needs.

“When you want to understand the way that Russia wages war and their ability to continue to do so in the future, I think that tension between supply and demand is important,” he said. “And the fact that they use those assets on things like hospitals, whether that’s intentional or not, compounds the issue.”

Russia-Iran Ties Being Strained by Parallel Conflicts

D UBAI—The parallel escalations in the Middle East and in the Russian war with Ukraine are creating fresh challenges for the budding partnership between Iran and Russia, two nations that have grown increasingly close because of their shared hostility to the United States.

Russia and Iran can fill gaps in each other’s intelligence and military capabilities—Russia makes sophisticated air defenses and aircraft, while Iran has developed powerful drones and missiles—as they confront foes in their own regions.

Iran has said it will mount a forceful retaliation against Israel for the July 31 killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Russia, surprised by the Ukrainian invasion of its Kursk region, is scrambling to respond as Kyiv readies its first F-16 aircraft and moves to destroy Russian air defenses.

This convergence of events means that each country has little spare capacity to offer the weapons that the other needs most—at least for now.

“Iran risks that what it had conceived as a contained military action against Israel turns into an all-out war,” said Ali Vaez, Iran project director at the International Crisis Group. “If that happens, Iran needs every missile that it has—in the same way that Russia needs every missile defense system that it has.”

From Moscow’s perspective, diplomats and intelligence officials say, the calculation is simple: a major Middle East war would hamper its own war effort and complicate relations with nations that allow Russia to mitigate the effect of Western sanctions, such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

After centuries of conflict and ideological differences, a partnership between Moscow and Tehran coalesced a decade ago, as Russian President Vladimir Putin turned away from the West following his initial invasion of Ukraine in 2014.

At the time, Russia and Iran successfully joined hands in Syria to prevent the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad, who was losing control to a U.S.-supported insurgency.

Russian setbacks in Ukraine following the February 2022 invasion changed the balance of power in its relationship with Iran. The country’s aura of military prowess was punctured and its economy was subjected to international sanctions that, in some ways, exceed those that Iran has faced for decades.

All of a sudden, Moscow went from being an undisputed senior partner to a needy nation desperate for military assistance from Tehran.

“For the first time in the postrevolution history of the Islamic Republic, Russia is actually dependent on Iran for something crucial, which is weapons,” said Meir Javedanfar, Iran lecturer at Reichman University in Israel. “After the recent defeats in Kursk, Russia needs Iranian support more than ever.”

Iran started supplying Russia with thousands of Shahed attack drones, artillery ammunition and some of its Mohajer drones that can fire missiles in the fall of 2022, following a Putin visit to Tehran. The assembly of the Shaheds has since been localized in the Tatarstan region of Russia.

So far, however, Iran has rebuffed Russian requests for ballistic missiles, of which it is believed to possess thousands. One senior Western official described the potential supply of several hundred such missiles to Russia as a “game-changer” in Ukraine—noting that Iranian stocks exceed the number of costly interceptors Kyiv can obtain.

Russia has already fired thousands of ballistic and cruise missiles at Ukraine, depleting its own reserves, and recently started using ballistic missiles provided by North Korea, another member of the new axis of anti-Western autocracies.

The U.S. State Department this week warned Iran of “a swift and severe response” by Washington and its allies should the Iranian missiles be provided to Russia.

Retribution, according to European officials, could include a ban on Iranian civilian flights to European nations—not necessarily something that would ultimately deter Tehran, they acknowledge. Russian airlines have already been banned from European and U.S. airspace since 2022, as part of the sanctions imposed for the invasion.

“Western powers have made it clear to Tehran that the transfer of ballistic missiles to Russia would burn any remaining diplomatic bridges over sanctions easing,” said Ellie Geranmayeh, Iran expert at the European Council on Foreign Relations. Tehran, she added, is unlikely to push these red lines until it establishes what Iran policy will be adopted by the next U.S. administration.

Western governments also have growing concerns about a potential shift in Russia’s willingness to share nuclear weapons technology. So far, the U.S. government says, it has seen no indication that Putin has changed Moscow’s longstanding policy to oppose an Iranian nuclear breakthrough. But the policy—once a consensus—is now the subject of discussion in Moscow’s security establishment, some of it behind closed doors and some in the open.

Sergey Karaganov, honorary chair of Russia’s Foreign and Defense Policy Council advisory group, who moderated Putin’s talk at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in June, wrote in an article published in February that “sooner or later we must change Russia’s official policy when it comes to nuclear non-proliferation” because it’s unfair to many non-Western countries. Iran, he added, should be able to have a nuclear deterrent if it renounced its stated aspiration to exterminate Israel.

Western officials say that the key area of concern, should decision makers in Moscow decide to assist Iran’s nuclear weaponization, would be unofficial knowledge-sharing by Russian scientists that is hard to detect. “Imagine a few Russian nuclear scientists go to Iran on a long vacation, and just fill the knowledge gaps,” one European official said. “That’s what we fear.”

When it comes to conventional weapons, Iran’s weakest spots are its rudimentary air defenses and outdated combat aircraft—areas where Russia has long promised to help. However, the sale of Su-35 multirole fighters announced years ago has yet to be completed, with the aircraft still sitting in Siberia and Western intelligence officials wondering about the reasons for the delay.

Iran received S-300 missile defense systems from Russia in 2016, nearly a decade after first agreeing to the deal, which Moscow canceled at one point. The S-300 system, however, seemed to be inefficient against a pinpoint Israeli strike in April, with satellite images indicating damage to its key component.

Contacts about shipping to Iran the more powerful S-400 air defense systems so far have led to no known agreements.

With Ukraine launching increasingly frequent drone and missile attacks on military and infrastructure targets in Russia and occupied parts of Ukraine, including military airfields, Moscow is unable to protect its own territory with sufficient air defenses. Several S-400 batteries have been destroyed in recent months.

These constraints point to the fundamental issue of the Russo-Iranian partnership. While Moscow and Tehran increasingly bond over their enmity to the U.S., they don’t publicly support each other’s war goals against their regional enemies.

While Iran seeks the eradication of Israel, Moscow maintains full relations with it, including visa-free travel for each other’s citizens and daily direct flights that continue even as air carriers from the U.S. suspended their links with Tel Aviv. Russia is also cultivating relations with Iran’s Arab rivals, Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E.

Iran, meanwhile, has never formally acknowledged that it’s supplying weapons to Russia, and—unlike North Korea, Belarus or Syria—abstained rather than siding with Moscow in United Nations General Assembly votes condemning the invasion of Ukraine.

“Russia and Iran have distinctive ideologies, competitive national interests, and centuries of mutual mistrust,” said Karim Sadjadpour, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “They cooperate when it suits their defiance of the U.S.-led world order, but neither will risk their hold on power by fully committing to each other’s cause.”

Mutual suspicion remains. In May, following the helicopter crash that killed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, both seen as key advocates of closer cooperation with Moscow, Russian military analysts speculated that the incident may have been orchestrated by elements of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps who seek eventual rapprochement with the West.

The July election of President Masoud Pezeshkian, who campaigned on promises of better ties with Europe and lowering tensions with the U.S. to revive the country’s struggling economy, only solidified such fears. Iran’s establishment, meanwhile, fears Moscow would betray Iran if it’s able to find an accommodation with the U.S. over Ukraine, especially if former President Donald Trump wins re-election.

The increasingly systemic nature of Russia’s—and Iran’s—conflict with the U.S. and the West, however, brings the two regimes closer together despite such suspicions, said Hanna Notte, director for Eurasia at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies in Monterey, Calif.

“There have been grievances in the past,” she said. “But the historical mistrust factor is by far outweighed today by having a common purpose and a common enemy in the United States and the West—and in seeing each other as partners in this global confrontation with the West.”

Coastal cruising is here and growing: 'A natural transition for any river cruiser'

  • Coastal cruising is one of the industry’s fastest-growing segments.
  • Coastal ships have a shallow draft that enables them to dock in small harbors without ferrying their passengers ashore on tenders.
  • American Cruise Lines plans to grow its fleet to 12 coastal cruise ships in the coming years as part of its “Project Blue” series.

EDGARTOWN, Mass. – “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

A terrified Chief Brody uttered one of the most memorable quotes in American cinematic history in the 1975 thriller “Jaws,” a watershed movie filmed here on Martha’s Vineyard , an affluent island 7 miles south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

Chief Brody’s panicked assertion was true if you’re trying to catch and kill a 25-foot great white shark with a ravenous appetite for sun-seeking beachgoers.

But when it comes to exploring the small towns, bays and inlets off the coastline of Cape Cod – and other coastal regions in the United States – bigger boats are about as useful as a rod and reel in trying to ensnare a horrifying 3-ton sea monster in Steven Spielberg's movie.

What is considered coastal cruising?

Coastal cruising is one of the industry’s fastest-growing segments. It involves sailing on small ships – typically carrying 100-200 guests – close enough to shore that passengers can see land throughout the voyage. The segment is geared toward older, well-heeled Americans who want to stay fairly close to home while visiting less touristy ports that the big ships can’t reach.

Coastal ships have a shallow draft that enables them to dock in small harbors without ferrying their passengers ashore on tenders. They offer the convenience and intimacy of riverboats coupled with the versatility and stability to sail in the open seas. On some itineraries, they also traverse rivers, lakes and canals.

I recently sailed on a one-week coastal cruise around Cape Cod on the 100-passenger “catamaran-inspired” American Eagle. The four-deck ship was christened in August 2023 and is part of the fleet of American Cruise Lines , the largest river cruise line in the U.S. that is rapidly expanding into coastal cruising.

The Connecticut-based company isn’t just dipping its toes in the coastal cruising market. It has seven coastal cruise ships on the water, with plans for two more ships to begin sailing by the end of the year and two more to launch in 2025. Its newest vessel, American Liberty, will take its inaugural voyage on Thursday from Providence, Rhode Island, visiting several ports in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

“Our newest small ships allow guests to cruise within sight of land and enjoy the same atmosphere found aboard our riverboats, making our coastal itineraries a natural transition for any river cruiser,” said Charles B. Robertson, American Cruise Lines’ president and CEO, whose father founded the company in 1972.

American Cruise Lines owns its own shipyard in Maryland’s Eastern Shore and all of its ships are U.S.-flagged, which allows for itineraries that don’t include a foreign stop. An American law requires foreign-flagged ships sailing in U.S. waters to stop in at least one non-U.S. port of call.

Besides New England, other U.S. coastal itineraries include the Chesapeake Bay with port stops in Maryland and Virginia, a Southeast cruise that visits Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, GA., trips around the coastline of Florida, the Puget Sound in Washington and Alaska’s Inside Passage.  American Cruise Lines also owns Pearl Seas Cruises, which has one coastal ship – the 210-passenger foreign-flagged Pearl Mist – now sailing the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway in Canada.

Rates for coastal cruises are comparable to high-end river cruises and can get pricey.  Depending on the cruise line and what amenities are included – like roundtrip air, a pre-cruise hotel, an open bar onboard and shore excursions – fares can easily exceed $1,000 per person per day.  A high percentage of cabins on coastal ships come with private balconies.

All told, American Cruise Lines plans to grow its fleet to 12 coastal cruise ships in the coming years as part of its “Project Blue” series.  Add that its stable of 10 riverboats plying the Mississippi, Columbia, Snake and other U.S. rivers, and the cruise line says it now has a footprint in 35 states.

Cape Codder cruise ports: Provincetown, Plymouth

The Cape Codder cruise on the American Eagle started and ended in Boston Harbor. The itinerary offered a chance to become immersed in the history related to the Pilgrims’ arrival in the New World in 1620 aboard the Mayflower and their encounters with the Wampanoag people, who have been living in New England for more than 12,000 years.

We reached our first port, Provincetown, on the northern tip of Cape Cod, just four hours after leaving Boston. I had thought the Pilgrims first landed at Plymouth Rock, but they actually spent five weeks in Provincetown before settling in Plymouth, about 80 miles west across Cape Cod Bay.

Provincetown, known as a boisterous party town, has a year-round population of less than 4,000 that swells to 60,000 during the summer. I climbed the Pilgrim Monument for a spectacular view of the town and harbor. A museum at the monument has a replica of the landmark Mayflower Compact. Signed by the Pilgrims in Provincetown Harbor, the compact is the first document to establish self-government in the New World.

In Plymouth I toured a full-scale reproduction of the Mayflower, the ship which brought 102 Pilgrims from England to America.  Their arduous journey across the Atlantic took 66 days.  From the American Eagle, I walked to the nearby Plymouth Rock, where some believe the Pilgrims first set foot in the New World.  While there is no historical evidence to confirm that, the rock remains an important symbol representing the determination of the nation's early settlers.

We also visited Plimoth Patuxet, a living museum that features a recreated 17th-century Pilgrim village. There are “historical interpreters” dressed as Pilgrims at the site, who interact with visitors as if it were 1627. They stay in character, so it’s best not to ask – as I made the mistake of doing – if the site had Wi-Fi.

Next up: Buzzards Bay, Hyannis, Newport RI

From the port of Buzzards Bay, I took an excursion to Hyannis to visit the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, which showcases the Kennedy family’s deep connection to Cape Cod. The Kennedys had several summer homes in nearby Hyannis Port. The compound, closed to visitors, is still the home of Ethel Kennedy, the 96-year-old widow of Robert F. Kennedy.

It's hard to find a place in America that oozes more money than Newport, R.I., known for its rich sailing history and grandiose homes.

By the turn of the 20th century, many of the nation’s wealthiest families – including the Vanderbilts and Astors – built summer houses in Newport. Today, mansions are owned by the likes of Jay Leno, Judge Judy and billionaire software-magnate Larry Ellison.

Martha's Vineyard, where 'Jaws' was filmed

The island of Martha’s Vineyard, often called “The Vineyard,” is another popular summer hangout for the rich and famous.

We visited Edgartown, a town that took on the stage name of “Amity” during the filming of “Jaws.” We also stopped by the spectacular Aquinnah Cliffs – with its colorful clay cliffs carved by glaciers – on the northwestern tip of the island.

As for sharks, it turned out that it was indeed safe to go back in the water again. The only sharks I encountered on the cruise were emblazoned on T-shirts and other souvenirs in Martha’s Vineyard gift shops.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Putin 'withdrawing generous offer' - as Russia 'moves troops to Kursk'

Vladimir Putin's "generous" offer is no longer on the table after Ukraine's invasion of Russia's Kursk region, a Kremlin official has said. Meanwhile, Lithuania's defence minister Laurynas Kasciunas has said Russia is moving troops from Kaliningrad to Kursk.

We'll be back tomorrow morning with more updates on the Ukraine war.

Before we go, here's a reminder of what has happened today:

  • Ukraine said its forces have taken control of 74 settlements in Russia's southern Kursk region;
  • White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said the US had no advance notice from Ukraine that it planned military action in the Russia border region;
  • Lithuania's defence minister Laurynas Kasciunas said Russia is moving troops from its Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad to the southern Kursk region;
  • Ukraine has proven it is "capable of protecting its interests and independence", Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his evening address;
  • Russia summoned a senior Moldovan diplomat to express "serious concern" over reports of Western-supplied F-16 fighter jets for Ukraine being based in Moldova;
  • Russia criticised Western allies of Ukraine and said they have not condemned Kyiv's invasion into the Russian region of Kursk.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said that evidence continues to indicate that yesterday's fire at the Russia-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine did not start at the base of the cooling tower or by a foreign object.

"The evidence gathered reinforces our conclusion that the main fire seems unlikely to be at the base of the cooling tower," the IAEA cited its head, Rafael Mariano Grossi, as saying in a statement.

It said "foreign objects or materials were visible" in the damaged tower.

The Russian management of the plant told the IAEA that the tower may need to be dismantled, the IAEA said.

For context : Yesterday, a fire broke out at the Russian-occupied plant and Moscow and Kyiv blamed each other for the fire, which has since been extinguished.

The IAEA said its experts at the plant witnessed "thick dark smoke" coming from the northwestern area of the plant, after hearing multiple explosions.

A Russian official said at the time that the cooling tower at the plant may need to be replaced.

Footage has emerged showing a Ukrainian truck carrying blindfolded men in Russian military uniform travelling away from the Russian border.

Ukraine's attack on the Russian border region of Kursk last week took Moscow by surprise.

Following the attack, about 121,000 people have been evacuated from the area or have fled.

Russia has criticised Western allies of Ukraine and said they have not condemned Kyiv's invasion into the Russian region of Kursk.

Today, Ukraine's allies on the UN Security Council - including the US, France and Britain - shared their support for Kyiv during an informal council gathering convened by Russia. They did not mention the Kursk offensive.

Speaking at the meeting, Russia's deputy UN ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy told the council gathering: "We haven't heard a word of condemnation of these actions from the Western sponsors of the Kyiv regime who continue to cover up the abhorrent crimes of their puppet.

"I would be grateful for the explanation how intentionally targeting civilians serves the goal of disrupting attacks on Ukrainian territory, given the fact that there were no military objects or infrastructure in the area."

During the informal council meeting, American, British and French diplomats listed accusations against Russia of violations of international humanitarian law and human rights in Ukraine.

"There is no question as to which country has committed numerous well-documented atrocities, including war crimes and crimes against humanity, on Ukraine's sovereign territory," US diplomat Caleb Pine said.

"That country is Russia."

Our  security and defence analyst Professor Michael Clarke  has said it may not make strategic sense to hold Kursk long-term.

"In this war, we're used to seeing battles develop over a very long period - real battles of attrition go on for months," he says.

"This coming battle of Kursk will be measured in days and weeks, not weeks and months."

That's because of mounting pressure on Vladimir Putin, he says.

"For his own survival inside the Kremlin, he has to make it clear that Russian territory is sacred, so he'll do whatever it takes to get rid of this enclave," he explains.

"Russia has not been invaded since 1941, so this is outrageous from his point of view."

You can watch Clarke's full analysis here...

Earlier, US state department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said the US was not engaged in any aspect of planning or preparation for Ukraine's invasion in the Kursk region of Russia (see post at 6.13pm).

Now, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre has reiterated that the US had no advance notice from Ukraine that it planned military action in the Russia border region.

Ms Jean-Pierre, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One as President Joe Biden flew to New Orleans, said Washington had no involvement in the operation.

US officials have been seeking clarification from Ukraine about its objectives in Russia.

Earlier, we brought you comments from the commander of the Ukrainian military, Oleksandr Syrskyi, who said that Ukraine now controlled 74 settlements in the Kursk region.

Ukrainian troops have continued to advance, gaining control of over 15 square miles of territory in the past 24 hours, he said.

About 121,000 people have been evacuated from Kursk or have fled the areas affected by fighting on their own, Russian officials say.

Here footage shows a Ukrainian soldier celebrating the invasion across the border into the Kursk region.

Russia is moving troops from its Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad to the southern Kursk region, Lithuania's defence minister Laurynas Kasciunas has said.

Mr Kasciunas made the remarks during a meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.

For context : Kaliningrad was claimed by the Russians after the Second World War.

Originally known as Konigsberg, Kaliningrad was part of Germany until the Red Army took it from the Nazis in 1945.

After the war in 1946, it was given a new Russian name and its previous German citizens were evicted and replaced with Russians.

It is a key port city on the Baltic Sea and home to Russia's Baltic Sea Navy fleet.

When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, it was allowed to remain part of Russia, while the neighbouring states of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia became independent.

Vladimir Putin's "generous" peace offer is "no longer on the table" after Ukraine's invasion of Russia's Kursk border region, a Kremlin official has said.

Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia's deputy envoy to the UN, told a meeting at the organisation's headquarters today: "In June, Russia made a generous offer to Ukraine, but a week ago, the Zelenskyy regime chose escalation, making an attack on the Kursk region."

He went on to say the offer was "no longer on the table".

"This is a step that Ukraine will later regret," he added.

For context : Russia this year said it would be ready for peace talks "tomorrow" if Ukrainian troops withdrew from the Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Donetsk and Luhansk regions - and if Ukraine gave up its plan to join NATO.

If Ukraine agreed, Mr Putin said Russia would cease fire and begin negotiations.

But Ukraine, NATO and the Pentagon dismissed it, with one of Volodymyr Zelenskyy's advisers calling the offer a "complete sham".

Ukrainian officials have been tight-lipped about the Kursk operation – but on Telegram, footage of different units offer a brief glimpse into who is involved and where they are inside Russia.

Geolocated footage posted online within the last two days show Ukrainian units in Sudzha and Dar'ino in the Kursk region close to Russia's border with Ukraine.

One video shows three soldiers from Ukraine's 225th Separate Assault Battalion taking down a Russian flag outside a school in the village of Dar'ino - under 5km from the border.

The battalion is a unit of Ukraine's Ground Forces and previously fought in eastern Ukraine near Chasiv Yar which saw fierce fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces in May.

While it's unclear exactly when the video was taken, it was posted on the battalion's Telegram channel on Monday. One analyst said the size of Ukrainian battalions can "vary" depending on the type of unit.

John Hardie, deputy director of the Russia programme at Washington-based thinktank Foundation for Defense of Democracies said Ukrainian battalions are often under strain "so they might not be more than a company level of size - so 100-150 troops".

He said it's unclear from the footage alone to determine exactly what strength the 225th battalion has been fighting at in Kursk.

Other videos show Ukrainian soldiers walking around the town of Sudzha along with military vehicles. The soldier's vest reads "Bravo Team" and was posted by the Bravo team Telegram channel - linked with Ukraine's 130th Separate Reconnaissance Battalion.

The same channel posted another video filmed from inside a military vehicle inside Sudzha.

But it's not just Ukrainian soldiers seen in these videos.... a Ukrainian MP also posted a video online yesterday at border checkpoint between Ukraine and Belgorod – just under 50km south of Sudzha.

In the Facebook video, Roman Kostenko said he was going into Russian territory with Ukraine's defence force and would "write a statement" about his "trip".

Dozens of other geolocated videos have emerged on Telegram showing soldiers in combat in various parts of the Kursk region. It's unclear exactly how many Ukrainian units have been involved in the operation that started last week.

Mr Hardie says the Kursk operation is different in "size, scale and ambition" to previous small-scale raids in the Belgorod region, including the use of regular military units and the number of brigades involved.
