This is the ultimate guide for the top Snorkeling tours on Oahu. There’s nowhere in the world quite like Oahu when it comes to marine life. With about a thousand miles of coral reef surrounding the Hawaiian Islands, snorkeling is one of the island’s most popular water activities. You can come face to face with tropical fish, green turtles, spinner dolphins, spotted eagle rays, and even hear the calls of majestic humpback whales.
My personal favorites are Turtle Canyon Snorkel Cruise by Catamaran to snorkel with green turtles and Oahu Snorkel Cruise: Swim With Turtles In Waikiki to snorkel, eat delicious food and learn about Hawaiian history.

Let Catamaran Cruise take care of getting you there with everything you need for a lovely day of snorkeling and cruising. For $97, you will get pretty much everything you need from pick-up and drop-off, snorkeling and SCUBA equipment, lunch and snacks, complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and an expert guide.
There are two tour options; a 2-hour morning tour and a 3-hour midday tour. What sets our trips apart from other snorkeling tours in Waikiki is the knowledge of our crew for our local marine life and our passion for teaching our guests how to get comfortable snorkeling while respecting our local environment. We have about a 95% success rate at finding the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles on our snorkeling trips, but you will enjoy observing and learning about many more of our local species of tropical fish, many of which are found only in Hawaiian waters.
THE LIVING OCEAN FAMILY
WHAT YOU'LL EXPERIENCE WITH LIVING OCEAN
Snorkel with sea turtles.
At Waikikiʼs Turtle Canyons it is common to see up to 10 Hawaiian green sea turtles! These turtles spend time on the surface to breathe, which gives us an amazing opportunity to get a great view! Even though turtles are wild animals it is incredibly rare to come on one of our Waikiki snorkeling cruises and not get a chance to snorkel with turtles!
RESPONSIBLE ECO-TOURISM
During your Honolulu snorkeling tour you will learn how to observe with the marine life in a responsible way. Giving the turtles room so that they feel comfortable to catch their breath on the surface as well as never touching the turtles are a few things you can do to keep Hawaiian green sea turtles safe for years to come.
SEE TROPICAL REEF FISH
Snorkel with all of Hawaiiʼs colorful tropical fish! We see many species of different reef fish on our Oahu snorkeling tours, and about 30% of the reef fish in Hawaii are endemic, meaning you wonʼt find them anywhere else in the world!
PRIVATE O'AHU TOURS
• up to 36 guests & snorkelers •.
Our two-hour private snorkeling excursions will take you to Waikikiʼs Turtle Canyons for a fun day of snorkeling with sea turtles. We will provide all of your equipment as well as a snorkel guide.
DIVE INTO OUR O'AHU SNORKELING TOURS!
We had a great snorkeling trip. The guys at Living Ocean were great. We saw dolphins, plenty of turtles, tropical fish, held a sea urchin and even saw a small reef shark! Great experience for our family, won’t forget it! Thanks for making this a memorable trip for us!
Amazing experience topped off with a knowledgeable and courteous staff! I elected to do this for my honeymoon and we will certainly be back!
These guys really know what they are doing! Very friendly crew and informative. Was able to get us right above the reef and we got to swim with about 6 turtles. Snacks and water included. Highly recommended!
Super beautiful trip, saw dozens of turtles in the crystal clear waters. The crew was extremely kind, helpful, and accommodating. Will definitely take this trip again when we return!
The guys were so chill and welcoming. Chase was very friendly and prepared us for the turtles. We literally saw so many turtles, the hype is real! Very pleased with the tour & sightseeing!

This was our favorite experience during our two weeks in Hawaii. Great friendly crew, good lunch. The whole thing felt relaxed and lovely. We went snorkeling and we saw a turtle. This really made us happy. The pick up from the hotel was also very good.
If you are looking for a sunset cruise, this is the one to take! The crew exemplified the saying “Do what you love but call it work.” Their enthusiasm, friendliness, and love of the natural beauty surrounding us made this a truly memorable evening.
This was an amazing experience. Really, I can't say enough good things. The team worked together to give us a wonderful morning of both relaxation and fun. If your vacation budget only really allows you to do one thing, this should be it!!
We did the Sunset Cruise, absolutely amazing, Staff was just awesome......Grace, Tamiko, Taylor and Captain Travis...and a special shout out to, Jake who entertained my 4 year old daughter and made her birthday!! Also let Mom and Dad enjoy the Sunset!!! A definite must do!!!

Oahu Snorkeling – The Complete Guide
Oahu snorkeling can be great fun. It was here that Galen first fell in love with snorkeling at a young age, at Oahu’s world famous Hanauma Bay. We have since snorkeled it all.
Where are the best snorkeling spots on Oahu? They are spread out all over the island (see map below). If you are staying in Waikiki you can take some boat tours from there. But we recommend you also rent a car to snorkel some great areas on the north and west shores.
Oahu Snorkeling Spots
Click on each location below, for full details and pictures. And read down the page for more of what to expect from snorkeling Oahu. And also be aware that it is illegal to snorkel with Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins .
Waikiki Area
Queens Beach and Sans Souci Beach – The closest beach snorkeling to Waikiki that is decent.
Hanauma Bay – Swim with fish at this famous snorkel spot.
Lanikai Beach – A stunning east shore beach with fair snorkeling.
Ko Olina Lagoons – View fish and turtles in one of these enclosed resort bays with beautiful beaches.
Kahe Point – You can see both fish and live coral by boat tour or shore access.
Makaha Beach Park – Swim with turtles at this large west shore beach.
North Shore
Waimea Bay – Find decent summer snorkeling at this famous surfing beach.
Three Tables – One of the best places to snorkel on Oahu.
Sharks Cove – This popular little cove is terrific for swimming with fish.
Sunset Beach Park – This winter surf beach has okay snorkeling in the summer.
Turtle Bay Resort – You can see fish and turtles in this resort’s small cove.
Visiting Other Hawaiian Islands?
Our Hawaii Snorkeling Guide is a great resource if you plan to snorkel more islands than Oahu. In this eBook you also get more Oahu information like maps, rankings, suggested itineraries, and many more pictures.
Hawaii Requires Reef Safe Sunscreen
We suggest buying this reef safe sunscreen , that we have tested, before you go. Or better yet, limit how much you use by wearing rash guards instead.
What’s Oahu Snorkeling Like?
Many Free Snorkeling Opportunities at Fantastic Beaches We really like the freedom of going snorkeling on our own schedule from beaches. And Oahu does not disappoint this way. Yes, you do have to pay for a reservation to snorkel Hanauma Bay, but nearly every other location is free.
By the way, if you love snorkeling like us, you will also love our free monthly snorkeling newsletter .
Get Personal With Fish There are a number of places on Oahu where you can see a lot of fish. Some of these are protected from fishing, which always makes the fish very friendly. You can get lots of great close-up pictures of your favorite tropical fish.
Expect Crowds and Okay Snorkeling, Not Great Oahu has six times the population of the next most populated island and receives twice as many visitors as the next most visited island. This has done a good bit of damage to the health of the sea life.
For sure, Oahu snorkeling does not compare to Maui or the Big Island ; it has fewer locations and the health of the sea life is not as magnificent. So consider adding one of those islands to your trip for better snorkeling.
It’s a Beautiful Island Relax, you are in Hawaii after all, and it is easy to bliss out here, watching a sunset with someone you love. The landscape and seascapes on Oahu are fantastic, from the steep tree covered mountain passes, to some of the most stunning beaches in the world. Even if you are driven nuts by cities and traffic, you can find a serene hangout on Oahu.

Oahu Snorkeling Safety and Travel Tips
Snorkeling Seasons Oahu has snorkel spots all around the island (see map below). Although there are few on the east side because it is exposed to the common trade wind direction. The snorkeling on the north and south shores is fairly seasonal. While it is certainly possible to snorkel in the winter, your chances at some of the better locations on the north shore are much greater in the summer. You’ve heard of the north shore surfing scene, right?
In the summer, there can be a south swell making the south shore beaches dicey for snorkeling, too. Read our when to snorkel Hawaii page for more on planning your trip for the best snorkeling.
Some Oahu Snorkeling Has Open Ocean Exposure About half the beaches we describe are openly exposed to ocean currents and swell and a few more are partially exposed. That means you need to be a good reader of the sea and a strong swimmer if you go into those exposed areas.
Where to Stay for the Best Oahu Snorkeling? Nearly all the hotels and resorts on Oahu are in Waikiki, but unfortunately the snorkeling close to Waikiki is poor. Finding places to stay outside of Waikiki or Honolulu might be a challenge, but our Oahu snorkeling accommodations page aims to help you figure that out.

We had a fabulous time with our guide. She was super patient and waited for all of us to be comfortable and ready to snorkel. We saw jellyfish, schools of fish, and tons of coral. Would definitely go again.

Diamond Head Beach Lookout
Diamond Head Beach Lookout was a strategic military site during WWII, and a favorite surfing spot for locals. There’s always a wave to be surfed at this beach. The lookout provides a good view of this hotspot in the foothills of Diamond Head.
Situated Near the blowhole in an incredibly beautiful corner of Oahu is a secret beach made famous in the movie "From Here to Eternity." This little cove is extraordinary, and one of Oahu's hidden gems. It's also just about the most relaxing place on the planet!
The Halona Blowhole
Come and marvel at this geologic wonder as it shoots water into the heavens. As the waves crash into the rocks, the water moves underneath the rocks from underwater caves. Then the pressure builds up and it shoots the water as high as you can see. One of Oahu's geologic wonders!
Makapuu Point Lookout (Drive By)
You will get a glimpse at one of the most awe-inspiring views in the Eastern Corner of Oahu. The vista from the Makapu'u Point lookout is something to behold. The Bluest of Blues, the Greenest of Greens, and ancient jagged lava rock surrounding yellow sand.
Byodo-In Buddhist Temple
The stunning Buddhist temple was built in the 1960s to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. It is a replica of a 900-year-old temple in Uji, Japan and features traditional Japanese architecture and landscaping.
Next, we'll come upon the body boarding, body surfing, skim boarding, and broken neck capital of the world... Sandy Beach. A famous hangout for locals, and just amazing playground, Sandy Beach is the perfect place to watch the experts play with expert waves...
Behold the legendary Chinaman’s Hat! This awesome geological formation is located on one of the most beautiful parts of the island. This picturesque island off the coast of Kaneohe Bay is a volcanic formation that is about as iconic with the Island of Oahu as Diamond Head.
Sunset Beach on North Shore (Drive By)
Known for big wave surfing during the winter season, it is a site for surf competitions and home to the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. We’re not allow to get out at this location, but when the surf is up you can see the waves from the bus.
Macadamia Nut Tropical Farm
Take a look back at the plantation days in Hawaiian history. Learn the life cycle of the nut from flower to harvest. Indulge in all-you-can-eat Macadamia Nut Samples, grab a hot cup of Kona Coffee, and go outside to talk story with the Samoan Chiefs.
Exotic Fruit Stand
Mango, Pineapple, Coconut, Breadfruit, Dragon Fruit, Egg Fruit, Lilikoi, Honey Dew, Cantaloupe, Papaya, Apple Bananas, Ice Cream Bananas, Kiwis, Lychee, Rambutan, Sapote, Chi Chi... Every fruit that you've ever heard of, and definitely every fruit that you've never heard off.
Kahuku Shrimp
The shrimp served on the North Shore is never frozen and actually locally raised in ponds right on their property. Enjoy local, Hawaiian dishes, their famous shrimp sautéed with butter and garlic, or tons of other options that don’t include seafood.
Sea Turtle Beach (Alii Beach)
It's time to go snorkeling with the Sea Turtles. These curious creatures are docile and overwhelmingly cute. The area is perfect for snorkeling and seeing some of the local sea life. Large sea turtles (“Honu”) are often seen in the shallow waters here.
Dole Plantation offers a variety of unique gifts and refreshments including fresh pineapple, and DoleWhip ice cream. This is a great spot to grab things to bring home, or send as gifts. Our stop here does NOT allow time for the train ride or maze.
Last stop right down the road... Green World grows boutique coffee and has many coffee trees growing on the property so you can get a look up close. They also have a great coffee shop so you can fuel up for the journey back to Waikiki.

1. Electric Beach Snorkeling (West Oahu)
Our #1 spot is also our most dangerous. This snorkel spot is for moderate to advanced snorkelers and a snorkel buddy is a must. With that said, the snorkeling here is amazing.
Fish congregate at the warm water pipe outlet of the local electric plant. The artificial reef created by the warm water has hundreds of fish swimming around the snorkelers. Here is how to get out to the pipe outlet.
Electric Beach is located in West Oahu, on the way out to Waianae, just past Ko Olina Resorts. Park at Kahe Point Beach Park. Warning, car break-ins are common here so don’t leave anything in your car.
Behind the pavilion is a small beach. Enter here but check ocean conditions. Strong currents and waves are common at this beach and there are no lifeguards on duty. If the conditions don’t look good, don’t enter the water. If in doubt, don’t go out.
The pipe enters the ocean at the beach. Follow the pipe from shore to get to the outlet. The swim is about 100 yards out from shore. See the graphic below for Electric Beach.
Once you are out there snorkeling with your buddy, you can hang at the surface to see all the fish or dive down 15 to 20 feet to be close to the pipe outlet.
Electric Beach Snorkeling Amenities:
- No lifeguard on duty
- Large parking lot
- Sandy beach access
- Restroom and shower facilities
Google Directions: Kahe Point Beach Park 92-301 Farrington Hwy, Kapolei, HI 96707
Another way to access this snorkeling area of Waianae is with a snorkel tour on a catamaran . Our favorite Oahu snorkeling tour leaves Ko Olina Marina. If you’re staying in Waikiki (transportation is available) or Ko Olina, then head out on a snorkel tour.
2. Hanauma Bay: Oahu’s Famous Snorkel Spot
Hanauma Bay gets a bad rap due to the reservation system and the crowds. But, we can’t help but make this our #2 snorkel spot on Oahu due to the ease of snorkeling and the large, abundant, and colorful marine life here.
Located 25-minutes east of Waikiki, plan to spend the day here snorkeling and playing on the beach. The beach is one of the best on Oahu !
With lifeguards on duty, snorkel rental available at the beach, and a large reef to protect the kids from the waves, you can play all day here under the sun. Hanauma Bay is a great place to teach the kids how to snorkel as there is no shore break, the water is shallow, and the fish are curious. See our 22 other things to do on Oahu with kids .
With no fishing in the bay, the fish are large and not scared of the snorkelers.
Hanauma Bay Snorkeling Amenities:
- Lifeguards on duty
- Snorkel rental at the beach
- Snack shop available at the visitor center
Reservations are required . Note, this is the official site for Hanauma Bay Nature Reserve . It is not a state park so be wary of the other website.
Check snorkel conditions at Hanauma Bay .

3. Shark’s Cove Snorkeling During the Summer
Shark’s Cove is a gem on Oahu’s North Shore. From May to September, the waves settle down for some epic snorkeling in the lava rock-protected cove.
Pupukea Beach Park has a large cove that is about 5 to 10 feet deep. Fish enter the cove and have a hard time getting out. That is good news for beginner snorkelers. Enter from the sandy beach, there are some rocks but mostly sand, to snorkel around the cove.
Shark’s Cove Snorkeling Amenities:
- No lifeguards on duty
- Restrooms and showers
- Picnic tables
- Snorkel rental shop across the street
- Food trucks across the street
We like Shark’s Cove for the clear water and the protected lagoon. Make sure the conditions are good for snorkeling before you go out by checking lifeguard flags and conditions. Rescues here are frequent during the winter and early spring but lifeguards come when responding to 911 calls. See other snorkel beaches for lifeguards on duty.
Grab our favorite reef-safe, mineral-based sunscreens before you head into the water.
Check snorkel conditions near Pupukea Beach Park .
Google Directions: Shark’s Cove at Pupukea Beach Park, Oahu
Bonus Oahu Snorkel Spot: Three Tables
At Pupukea Beach Park and just south of Shark’s Cove is Three Tables. Named for three table-like coral formations just offshore, Three Tables is another good spot for snorkeling during calm conditions.
As Three Tables and Shark’s Cove is part of the Pupukea Marine Life Conservation District (no fishing from shore), the fish populations are large. For where to snorkel, float over the three tables for the best snorkeling. They are easily spotted at low tide, only about 25 yards from shore.
Want to snorkel with sea turtles and see Hawaiian Spinner Dolphins? Our favorite snorkel tour on Oahu leaves out of Ko Olina Marina. Learn more here .
Shark’s Cove is one of seven of our favorite things to do on Oahu . If you’re going to drive to North Shore Oahu, see our list to keep you busy.
4. Kuilima Cove Snorkeling at the Legendary Turtle Bay Resort
All beaches in Hawaii are public so this best of the best snorkel spot on Oahu is available for all. Kuilima Cove is a large cove next to Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu’s North Shore. The large reef and rocks keep the water clarity excellent even when there are large North Shore waves.
With a large beach and protected lava-rock walls, the cove is an excellent place for snorkeling. Water depth is 5 to 15 feet deep. You will find a coral reef and rocks to explore for fish and sea turtles.
Kuilima Cove is a great place to find Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles eating seaweed (limu in Hawaiian) from the rocks and reef. Stay a respectful 10 feet away and never touch the endangered animal as it is illegal.
Caution, stay away from the lifeguard buoys as they mark the channel out of the cove. You will find strong currents that might suck you out to sea so stay clear of the buoys.
Kuilima Cove Snorkeling Amenities:
- Restroom and showers are available
- Food is available at Turtle Bay Resort or Beach House by Roy Yamaguchi
- Public parking is limited but available in the Turtle Bay Resort parking lot
Online snorkeling conditions are not available for Kuilima Cove. Check flags at the beach!
Google Directions: 57-35 Kuilima Dr, Kahuku, HI 96731

5. Queens Beach in Waikiki
We can’t have the best snorkeling spots on Oahu without including one location in Waikiki. Waikiki is the most visited and famous place to stay in all of Oahu. While Waikiki Beach is best known for surfing ( see our favorite surf school here ), there is one snorkel spot worth visiting.
Queens Beach is located on the Diamond Head side of Waikiki, near Kapiolani Regional Park. Being on the far side of Waikiki Beach, you will find fewer beachgoers over here.
The best snorkeling is located near the beach wall or jetty. Walk from the sandy beach and swim along the jetty. The best snorkeling is located about 25 yards past the jetty.
Queens Beach Snorkeling Amenities:
- Lifeguard on duty
- Restrooms and showers available
- Food nearby in Waikiki
- Parking available at the Honolulu Zoo (paid)

Safety at the Best Snorkeling Spots on Oahu
We want you to have a safe vacation in Oahu, Hawaii. Snorkeling is the number one cause of death for visitors to Hawaii.
Be it your first-time to Hawaii or your eleventh, a snorkeling refresher is always a smart idea. We always recommend snorkeling visitors read up on snorkel safety tips for Hawaii .
The City and County of Honolulu Ocean Safety Division have excellent lifeguards located at 29 beaches on Oahu. While having a lifeguard on duty is comforting, it is up to you to understand the lifeguard flags and know your limits before you venture into the mighty Pacific Ocean.
Here are a few Oahu snorkel safety tips for beginners:
- Always snorkel with a buddy
- Go snorkeling in the morning for the best visibility and usually better ocean conditions
- Prepare your equipment – wear quality, well-fitting equipment and apply anti-fog to your mask before you enter the water
- Always be aware of ocean activity – never turn your back on the ocean and understand the currents where you’re snorkeling
- Relax and focus on floating – use a flotation device and float to conserve energy. Kick to move around but heavy kicking isn’t necessary.
Wait a few days after you land on Oahu
There is a common misconception that snorkel drownings and near misses are caused by inexperience on the part of the swimmer. A three-year study by the Hawaii Department of Health found that tourist snorkeling deaths are largely the result of low oxygen levels in body tissues prompted by excess fluid buildup in the lungs.
The condition is known as hypoxia induced by rapid onset pulmonary edema, or ROPE.
Long-distance air travel may be the cause of hypoxia, leading to a disproportionate number of visitor snorkel drownings. The act of breathing through a snorkel may trigger a respiratory impairment. The victim doesn’t inhale water but the respiratory system shuts down.
Wait a few days after you land on Oahu before you drive to one of these snorkeling spots.
When in doubt, don’t go out!
Hawaii Snorkel Guide Video
Erica and I love to go snorkeling when we travel to the Hawaiian Islands. Watch our Hawaii snorkeling guide video for more tips on snorkeling in Hawaii.
The biggest question we get asked is where to rent or buy snorkel equipment. We cover that in the video below!
Shark Safety When Snorkeling
If sharks are scaring you away from snorkeling on Oahu, keep this in mind: Hawaii has more than 9 million visitors each year. The odds are in your favor that you’ll be able to swim and snorkel safely in Hawaii.
If you want to do your best to snorkel safely and reduce your chances of meeting a shark while out enjoying the water, see these shark safety guidelines.
- Don’t go off alone. Swim and snorkel with other people.
- Avoid murky water, harbor entrances, stream mouths, channels, or steep dropoffs. Sharks like to hang out in places like this.
- Avoid swimming at dawn or dusk.
- Don’t enter the water if you’re bleeding — even a little bit. They can detect the smallest amount of blood and will come to investigate.
- Don’t wear high-contrast clothing or jewelry. This will get their attention and draw them in.
- Don’t splash excessively. The splashing could attract sharks.
- Don’t go in the water if a shark has been spotted (obviously).
- If fish or turtles begin acting erratically, it’s best to leave the water. They might feel the presence of a shark nearby.
- Be cautious if there are dolphins present — some larger sharks view them as food.
- Don’t swim near people who are fishing. Why swim near shark bait?
- When in doubt, stick to beaches with lifeguards and follow their instructions.

10/10 recommend Island Magic for a memorable sail while in Hawaii! We had a blast with Ryan and Dana, our captains! They took care of us like we were their friends. It truly felt like we were hanging out with friends when we were on the boat. They're such fun people to be around! All while ensuring the safety of our group! We were on a bachelorette party trip so we took so many pics and they graciously offered to help us capture fun photos. So sweet and thoughtful! They picked out a great place for us to swim and jump into the ocean. They knew exactly where to go to find calm waters for us to enjoy :) they also had floaties for us so we could just relax in the water. Bonus: they pointed out dolphins and sea turtles, and even brought us closer to them (safe distance of course). It's impossible not to have a good time with Ryan and Dana! They are amazing. The boat is amazing. The hospitality is amazing. Everything about them.... AMAZING!!! Can't wait to come back and book another adventure on the ocean with them
Island Magic Hawaii is best vessel in Hawaii, especially Captain Ryan with awesome crew always have ton of fun in Island magic, Just like the Name!!! Island Magic We can't wait to cruise with them again
I highly recommend Island Magic to anyone seeking a personalized sea adventure with friends! From the moment we stepped aboard, Captain Ryan and Dana were welcoming and attentive, ensuring our comfort and safety. The boat was pristine and spacious, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the gorgeous views of the Waikiki coastline and the sun rising over East Honolulu. The highlight was snorkeling, of course! Ryan and Dana took us to an amazing spot called Turtle Canyon, which, as locals, was new to us. We reached the spot before other groups and managed to avoid the mad rush of tourists. Five stars!! We're already excited for the next trip!
The Island Magic is just that - Magic! This is my second time on board & definitely won't be my last. Captain Ryan is a master at handling his craft in any water conditions, and Dana's ho'okipa is bar none. In our group were a few leery about being on the water, and even they had a great time. The convenient location can't be beat, within walking distance of the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Mahalo Mary! Your family and friends were such a pleasure to have aboard! You are welcome back any time.
The Island Magic is docked right next to Magic Island. What's more fitting than that! The ship and crew live up to their name, providing a truly magical private sunset cruise. Captain Ryan and First Mate Dana are a professional crew who's primary goal is to show you a great time and cater to your needs. We did a sunset tour on an Aloha Friday so we could catch the Fireworks as well. There is something magical seeing Diamondhead and the Waikiki skyline from the ocean. During sunset, if you look towards Kaka'ako, you can see all the high rises reflecting the sunset in a glorious glow! The best part is the ability to enjoy this with your friends and only your friends. No random strangers looking to get drunk and tarnish such a wonderful experience. Highly recommend and looking to rebook when I go back in a month!

Mahalo Veasna! It was a pleasure to host you and your friends, such good people. Thank you so much for the compliment, we try our best to ensure everyone is having the best time. Hope to see you aboard soon, Aloha A Hui Ho!
From the moment we arrived at the dock, Captain Ryan and Dana greeted us with warm smiles and made us feel right at home. The boat was very spacious and comfortable, and we felt very safe under their guidance. Some highlights from the tour included stopping to take a swim in the ocean, catching the sunset on the way back into shore, and watching surfers up close from behind the break. I highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Hawaii. They are both extremely knowledgeable and passionate about their work, and they made our trip truly unforgettable. Thank you, Ryan and Dana, for an amazing day on the water!

Mahalo Rox! Really appreciate you taking the time to give us such a wonderful review. It was our absolute pleasure taking you and your friends out. See you again soon
I went on a private tour with Island Magic last year (long overdue review!) We brought along our family and friends and we were blown away by the attention to detail and care that the crew provided. Dana and Ryan went above and beyond to make sure our needs were met and they made us feel right at home on the boat. The positive energy onboard was contagious, the views of the ocean and scenery are breath taking. Dana and Ryan took great care to ensure we had an unforgettable experience and we were grateful for their warmth and attentiveness. I remember Dana taking photos on our phones for us, and she even took a few on her polaroid for us to keep. I highly recommend Island Magic for anyone looking for a unique and luxurious tour experience - Dana and Ryan are the best and they'll make sure you'll have the time of your life. Their hospitality and positivity are truly unmatched and will make your trip an unforgettable one. Thank you, Dana and Ryan, for a wonderful adventure!

Thank you so much for taking the time to review our boat charter business; it means alot. You and your friends were a pleasure to have aboard
Dana and Ryan are some of the most genuinely kind people I have ever met. They are super friendly and cordial and really made me feel at home while being on their boat. The whole experience with them was truly unforgettable. They know all the best vantage points that are unlike anything you'll be able to see from the shore. Highly recommend going with them if you're thinking of doing a boat excursion.
Highly experienced captain and crew. Professional, clean, and fun! Recommend if you're ever on Oahu, beautiful scenery and happy people :) !!!

Mahalo! It was such a pleasure to host you and your friends for a birthday with fireworks! Hope to see you all again soon, perfect guests.
I cannot recommend Island Magic Hawaii enough for a private boat charter! We had seven people (with two kids) and had the best time. It was the highlight of our trip. Captain Ryan and Dana were so kind, thoughtful, and knowledgeable. They made all feel so comfortable, including the kids! The boat is perfect. So much room and well maintained. We loved their floaties attached to the boat so we could hang out in the water, and we were even lucky enough to spot some dolphins on the boat ride back! Dana also took some fantastic pictures that she sent to us afterwards. Don't hesitate if you're considering booking with them!
Enjoying the view of Diamond Head.

This Beautiful Hawaiian Nature Reserve Is An Iconic Must-Visit For Movie Lovers
Snorkeling, zip-lining, and hiking are among the best things to do in Oahu , Hawaii. Beyond these adventurous recreational activities, this stunning island features a must-visit attraction for movie buffs. A 4,000-acre private nature reserve and cattle ranch on Oahu's windward coast, Kualoa Ranch holds a legendary claim to Hollywood fame.
In the 1950s – a century after its establishment – Kualoa Ranch also started being used as a filming site. Kualoa Ranch's impressive, lengthy resume includes classic movies and popular TV shows such as "Pearl Harbor," "50 First Dates," "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," "Lost," "Magnum P.I.," and "Hawaii Five-0." Notably, this Hawaiian destination was also one of the key filming locations for "Jurassic Park." With its sublime valleys and coastal surroundings, it's no surprise that Kualoa Ranch rose to stardom.
The Kualoa Ranch: Hollywood Movie Sites Tour transports visitors to some of cinema history's most iconic film sets. Prices start at $54.95 for adults and $39.95 for kids (ages 3-12). With a 4.5 average Tripadvisor rating, this tour has won the hearts of visitors. So, what can you expect to see? Lights, camera, action!
Blockbuster backdrops and marvelous landscapes
Kualoa Ranch's 90-minute vintage bus tour, led by a local guide, provides an inside look at major backdrops from blockbuster movies and TV shows. You'll get to see and learn about the location of the famous dinosaur herd scene from "Jurassic Park." Step into the scenes of other memorable movie moments like the "Jumanji" dance fight and the giant footprint discovery in "Godzilla" (1998). The tour includes a stop at a World War II army bunker containing Kualoa Ranch film props and memorabilia.
In addition to offering an incredible cinematic expedition, the Kualoa Ranch: Hollywood Movie Sites Tour highlights picturesque landscapes. Visitors will catch glorious views of Mokoli'i Island, Ko'olau Range, and Kaneohe Bay, which appears in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides." The tour will also help you gain insight into Hawaiian agriculture, such as farming and ranching. As one Tripadvisor review summed up, "To see where so many of the best movies & TV series were filmed (Lost, Jurassic Park, Pearl Harbour etc) is great in itself but the location is extremely beautiful & has so much history."
Other remarkable adventures at Kualoa Ranch
Aside from the Hollywood Movie Sites Tour, Kualoa Ranch boasts a variety of spectacular adventures such as electronic bike, UTV, horseback, and zip-line excursions. Another sightseeing option is the Ocean Voyage tour hosted on a catamaran. Those interested in quality beach time on Oahu should consider booking the Secret Island Beach Adventure , which offers half-day and full-day visits. Guests can participate in paddle boarding, kayaking, beach volleyball, and ping pong. Then, there's the Best of Kualoa Experience Package , where visitors can go on the Hollywood Movie Sites Tour, Jungle Expedition, and Kualoa Grown Tour.
Besides booking a tour, don't forget to check out Kualoa Ranch's free on-site facilities. Learn more about the nature reserve's fascinating past by visiting its museum, Kualoa History Hall. Stop at Judd Theater to view a brief historical documentary. Additionally, the ranch is home to a petting zoo and sculpture garden. Needless to say, Kualoa Ranch is an ideal destination for nature-loving movie fans.

USA TODAY 10Best
Why we love Lanai, Hawaii: Best things to do on this privately owned island
April 16, 2024 // By Kait Hanson
By Kait Hanson Honolulu Local Expert April 16, 2024
Planning a trip to Hawaii may include visions of Oahu’s iconic skyline complete with Diamond Head or witnessing the natural beauty of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park , but the lesser-known Hawaiian island of Lanai offers something the other islands don't: wide open spaces.
Known as the "Pineapple Isle," thanks to its past as a Dole pineapple plantation, Lanai is the sixth largest in the Hawaiian Island chain.
Despite booming growth on neighboring islands, Lanai (also written as Lāna’i, the traditional spelling) has maintained the feeling of untouched Hawaii with its limited paved roads and no traffic lights. The slower pace makes unplugging achievable, thanks to limited Wi-Fi across the island.
Advertisement Advertisement
With beaches that stretch without another person in sight, mountainous terrain dotted with Cook Pines, and a historic small town where everyone knows your name, the landscape may have you wondering what sort of magical world you’ve entered. The answer? Lanai. Here's everything you need to know about the island.
Where is Lanai?
The island of Lanai sits across the Auau Channel from the Hawaiian island of Maui. Only 140 square miles in size, Lanai is the smallest publicly accessible island in Hawaii.
Who owns Lanai?
Larry Ellison, cofounder of software giant Oracle Corporation, owns 98% of Lanai, which he purchased for $300 million in June 2012. The state of Hawaii and individual homeowners own the remaining 2%, which includes the harbor and private open spaces.
After the purchase, Ellison created Pūlama Lanai to manage, preserve, and protect the precious land and natural resources of Lanai. Though owned by Ellison, approximately 3,000 people live on the island of Lanai, and it is open to visitors.
How to get to Lanai
Lanai is accessible by air and boat, but there are no direct flights from the continental U.S. to Lanai. From mainland airports, the first step is a flight to larger Hawaiian airports, such as Honolulu or Kahului.
From there, fly from Oahu or Maui on Mokulele Airlines , or Lanai Air from Oahu, with flights into Lanai Airport (LNY). Guests choosing to travel by sea can book a transfer on Expeditions ferry service, which runs a limited schedule out of Ma`alaea Harbor in Maui.
Getting around on Lanai requires booking a taxi, shuttle, or rental car. Make reservations in advance due to limited supply.
Where to stay on Lanai
Four Seasons Resort Lanai , Sensei Lanai , and Hotel Lanai in the heart of Lanai City are the only three hotels on the Lanai.
The only oceanfront hotel is the luxurious 213-room Four Seasons Lanai property, perched on a cliff above Hulopoʻe Bay. A USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Award winner , it features a championship golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus, two pools, five restaurants, and a yoga studio featuring aerial hammocks.
Also a Readers' Choice Award winner , Sensei Lanai is an adults-only wellness retreat tucked within the mountainous upcountry Lanai. The resort allows guests to choose between a structured itinerary of activities — think spa treatments, hikes, and meditations — or an a la carte approach.
Opened in 1923 and extensively renovated in 2018, Hotel Lanai offers visitors the opportunity to stay in the heart of Lanai City, with island favorites like Blue Ginger Cafe , Lanai Wai Juice Truck , and Mike Carroll Gallery , no more than a short walk away.
What to do on Lanai
Though small, the island has something for every type of traveler. To help create an immersive experience, the Lāna‘i Culture & Heritage Center offers a free app for a guided walking tour of historic Lāna‘i City, plus info on hikes, driving tours, and island history.
Hiking trails
Lanai offers a variety of hiking trails that cater to all skill levels, from easy walks to challenging treks. Notable trails include the Munro Trail , the Koloiki Ridge Trail , and Kaunolu Village .
Garden of the Gods (Keahiakawelo)
Located 45 minutes from Lanai City, Garden of the Gods, or Keahiakawelo , features unique rock formations across red-hued terrain and panoramic views of the island. Note: You need a 4x4 vehicle to access Keahiakawelo.
Golf at Manele
Imagine playing 9 or 18 holes where the course water hazard is the Pacific Ocean. Lanai's Manele Golf Course , a Jack Nicklaus Signature course located within the Four Seasons Resort, is perched atop 200-foot sea cliffs. Even if you don't play, consider riding along to enjoy the views.
Sweetheart Rock (Pu'upehe)
Located 150 feet off the southern coast of Lanai, Sweetheart Rock is a popular landmark between Manele and Hulopoe Bay and offers stunning views of the sunset. Local legend tells the origin tale of the iconic formation, which begins with a warrior and maiden who were in love. The maiden was tragically killed by a storm surge, and the warrior climbed atop the rocky island to bury her before throwing himself into the sea.
Lanai Adventure Park
Ready for an adrenaline rush? Whether zip lining over Kaiholena Gulch, traversing an aerial tower, or hopping on an e-bike for an island tour guided by a local expert, Lanai Adventure Park offers something for the whole family.
Shipwreck Beach (Kaiolohia)
About 30 minutes north of Lanai City, a wrecked oil tanker from the 1940s sits just offshore. Towering and ominous against the blue waters and coastline, the tanker is just one of many ships that have wrecked in Lanai’s notoriously rocky and shallow channel. Visiting Kaiolohia requires a four-wheel drive.
Lanai Cat Sanctuary
Animal lovers should visit the Lanai Cat Sanctuary , home to hundreds of free-roaming cats. Visitors can interact with the felines and learn about conservation efforts.
Snorkeling at Manele Bay
The waters off of Lanai are full of marine life, including coral reefs, tropical fish, spinner dolphins, Hawaiian green sea turtles, and reef sharks. Manele Bay is a popular spot for snorkeling adventures thanks to calm waters near shore. Be sure to use reef-safe sunscreen.
Polihua Beach
Accessible via a rough dirt road, Polihua Beach offers a secluded escape with 2 miles worth of pristine sands and panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. An ideal spot for sunbathing, it’s often empty, save for Hawaiian green sea turtles who may make their way to shore.
Stroll through Lanai's city center, known for its plantation-style buildings, art galleries, and boutiques. Don't miss the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center for insights into island history and culture.
Let yourself unwind
Lanai is the ultimate destination for solitude, so whether you find a hammock, beach chair, pool lounger, or patch of sand, relaxing in the sunshine is one of the island's premier offers.
Can you go to Lanai for a day trip?
Yes, you can go to Lanai for a day trip. Spending a single day on Lanai is possible. Catching an early morning ferry ride from Lahaina or a flight from Honolulu allows a full day of exploring Lanai’s rich cultural history and untouched natural beauty before grabbing the last flight or ferry back to your origin.
Sail Trilogy also offers an eight-hour day trip to Lanai, which includes breakfast and a lunch barbecue, exploring island favorites, and snorkeling. Charters leave daily from Ma’alaea Harbor on Maui.
