DiscoverNEPA Bucket List image

Search for spirits of the past by venturing out on a Jim Thorpe Rotary Club GhostWalk. Home of the gallows, where the Molly Maguires were hanged, the town is filled with chilling stories and legends to captivate you. A costumed guide with an old-fashioned lantern leads the hour-long walk to set the mood. The one-mile GhostWalk starts at the Inn at Jim Thorpe, on Broadway.

Space is limited. Reserve your spot online or look for the GhostHost in the Inn’s basement conference room 15 minutes before walk time. While not scary, the GhostWalk is not recommended for children under seven years of age who might get easily distracted with some of the longer stories. Attentive children are certainly welcome. Proceeds help support the many community and international service projects of the Rotary Club of Jim Thorpe.

The Haunted Inn at Jim Thorpe

Built in 1833, the Inn at Jim Thorpe is considered one of the most haunted hotels in the state of Pennsylvania .

inn at jim thorpe pa

Ghosts of Jim Thorpe Inn

Over the years, the Inn has hosted such celebrities as John D. Rockefeller, Thomas Edison, Buffalo Bill and former presidents Ulysses S. Grant and William Howard Taft. However, these famous names aren’t the ones reportedly haunting the historic building in downtown Jim Thorpe.

The hotel says several guests have reported unexplained activity over the years in some of the rooms. Those include TVs randomly turning off and on, objects moving around, and strange orbs and shadows appearing in photos. Some children have even reported seeing ghosts in their beds. Other guests have said they’ve woken up to see chairs in their room turned upside down while they were sleeping.

In the last several years, Inn guests have reported cold spots or chilly breezes in the halls and seeing shadowy figures in their rooms and hotel common spaces. Some guests said they experienced an overwhelming feeling of being watched and feeling light touches on parts of their bodies as if done by an invisible hand.

Specific rooms noted by guests and Inn staff as the ones reporting the most unusual activity are 210 and 211. A guest of room 210 reported waking up one morning to an overwhelming smell that made her believe the room was on fire. It only lasted a couple of seconds, but the guest said she and her husband continued to wake up in the middle of the night for the next several days and reported feeling like they were being touched by something or someone.

Staff at the Inn said two guests who had stayed in room 211 at separate times reported the same story: they saw an indentation in the bed next to them as if someone were sitting on it. Other hotel staff reported feeling physically ill after running into some sort of dark form inside the Inn.

While the Inn doesn’t offer specific ghost tours of the building, guests said front desk staff are knowledgeable of its history and can provide more details on paranormal sightings. And over the years, ghost hunting crews from around the country have flocked to the Inn at Jim Thorpe with their tools and technology to see if they could also experience some of the unusual activity.

inn at jim thorpe history

Inn at Jim Thorpe History

The Inn started out as the White Swan Hotel in 1833, built by Cornelius Connor when the city was named Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania. The White Swan Hotel was one of several grand hotels in the area built to accommodate travelers to the booming coal and railroad town.

Unfortunately, the White Swan burned to the ground in 1849, along with many other of the city’s structures during the great fire. Connor then rebuilt the hotel as the New American Hotel.

The New American Hotel – and the town of Mauch Chunk – flourished as a social center and tourist attraction in the early 19 th century. Visitors flocked to the area to ride the famous Switchback Gravity Railroad and to visit Glen Onoko Falls. The city became so popular that New York’s Penn Station had a train platform just for service to Mauch Chunk.

But like many other American towns in the 1930s, the hotel fell into disrepair and decay during the Great Depression. It wasn’t until the late 1980s that the hotel became the Inn and was restored to much of its original splendor. The man behind that restoration, John Drury, is also the Inn’s owner and his son is the general manager.

The restoration of the Inn also came after the 1954 renaming of Mauch Chunk to Jim Thorpe – an Olympian and professional athlete.

The story behind the renaming is one of the most unusual in American history but relates to the town’s efforts to bring more tourists to the area.

Jim Thorpe wasn’t born there and never actually visited the town, but it’s still named after him. He is now buried there and every year Jim Thorpe the town has a little festival to honor him.

About the Hotel

The Inn at Jim Thorpe , the original main building at 24 Broadway, is four stories with 45 rooms that showcase restored Victorian style with modern amenities. Rooms range from cozy standard lodgings to two-bedroom suites with fireplaces and whirlpools.

Being in a historic, restored building, each room is unique. Each one has private baths/showers, cable television, a hairdryer, an alarm clock with USB ports, an iron and board and a Keurig coffee maker.

As for dining, the Inn offers a free $10 daily breakfast voucher per guest to be used at the Broadway Grille & Pub. The pub, on the Inn’s ground floor, has American cuisine and pub fare for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

There’s also live music four days a week and a weekday happy hour. Underneath the restaurant there’s the Broadway Underground, a night spot with live music and dancing every weekend.

  • 24-hour front desk service
  • Bike storage
  • Ping pong room

Things to Do Nearby

Jim Thorpe has several haunted tours around town and other excursions and attractions. The Jim Thorpe Rotary Club hosts Ghost Walks in Old Mauch Chunk – a one-mile round trip walk that starts at the Inn and features a costumed host telling the stories of other historic and reportedly haunted properties in the area. Ghost Walk tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 7-12.

The Old Jail Museum , also on Broadway, says it has friendly ghosts who “usually make their presence known to people who are not looking for them.” The Old Jail Museum boasts about guests frequently experiencing paranormal happenings, especially orbs and strange lights in their photos. Ghost tours are $15 a person. The museum also occasionally hosts private ghost hunts and investigations for an extra fee.

Visit Pennsylvania offers a four-day, 20-stop ghost ride covering towns in the eastern part of the state. Day one includes four spots in Jim Thorpe and nearby Bethlehem. In Jim Thorpe, ghost ride guests will visit the Old Jail Museum at the Carbon County Jail, the Asa Packer Mansion Museum, Historic Stone Row and of course the Inn.

Beyond ghost tours, Jim Thorpe is a picturesque historic town that’s often called the Switzerland of America for its mountain scenery and colorful and varied architecture. For the outdoorsy types, there’s whitewater rafting along the nearby Lehigh River, hiking in Lehigh Gorge State Park to see the Glen Onoko Falls, the Switchback and D&L trails and the Mauch Chunk Lake Park.

Ghost Rides – Eastern PA

4 days - 21 stops.

Whether you're hunting ghosts or history, this road trip is not for the faint of heart. It's autumn, the season of harvest and hauntings, and we've picked out some destinations that will complement the chill in the air. Along your journey, you'll encounter spooky hotels, haunted prisons, and maybe even the ghosts of a couple of Founding Fathers. We hope you brought your camera, and your running shoes, because you’re in for a spooky ride.

1. Old Jail Museum

Let's start off your trip with a stop at the notorious  Carbon County Jail . If these walls could talk, they'd be telling goosebump-worthy stories of murder, violence, and centuries-old hauntings. But since walls can't talk, you'll have to count on the guides who'll be happy to share all the sordid details of this old prison, built in 1871. Along your way, be sure to make a stop at infamous Cell 17.

2. Asa Packer Mansion Museum

While you're walking around Jim Thorpe, you may notice a gigantic mansion looming over the town. That red-roofed giant would be the  Asa Packer Mansion , built in 1861. Don't let its overwhelming presence scare you. There's no Doctor Frankenstein living up there peering out the windows, but you will find room after room of classic furniture and antiques from centuries past.

3. Historic Stone Row

Next, take a walk through the  historic streets of Jim Thorpe and you'll see that not much has changed over the past century. Back in the mining days, this area used to be known as Millionaire's Row because of the dozen or so wealthy Pennsylvanians who took up residence here. Today, you'll find a series of beautiful and sturdily built stone houses remaining as a throwback to the old days. Take a look around and be sure to make a stop at some of the quaint shops that pepper the area.

4. Inn at Jim Thorpe

Stroll down Main Street from the Historic Stone Row past the colorful trees to the  Inn at Jim Thorpe . Built in 1849, it is known as one of the most beautiful structures in town. It is so beautiful, in fact, that some of its guests decided to stay there in the afterlife. Over the years, there have been tales of moving objects, cold spots, and even overturned furniture. Guests in room 310 have reported feeling the icy grip of a nurse who occupied the room over a century ago.

5. Old Moravian Cemetery Walks

An hour's drive south will lead you to our next destination, a detour from Bethlehem's Main Street, where you'll come across the  Old Moravian Cemetery . The first things you'll notice on this brisk autumn afternoon (other than the general creepiness) are the flat gravestones lining the ground. The town's old Moravian inhabitants were strong believers in simple, not-too-flashy architecture. The cemetery itself is Bethlehem's oldest and was in use from 1742-1910.

After your stroll, head to Historic Main St. Bethlehem and tour the  1758 Sun Inn  where guests like George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Ben Franklin once stayed. Famously haunted, this hot spot is a favored place for paranormal investigators, gaining fame after its feature on “Ghost Hunters,” a popular cable TV show. After your tour, enjoy a drink at the  Biergarten In The Sun Inn Courtyard  before you head to your next stop.

7. Donegal Square

Donegal Square  is where Bethlehem comes for authentic Irish music, clothes, and gifts. It's also where they come for some creepy ghost tales. This is the site where General Lafayette rehabilitated from battle wounds he suffered in the Revolutionary War. According to legend, his caretaker's daughter was so in love with him that even to this day she wanders the site looking for him. Visitors have reported experiencing poltergeist activity like faucets turning on and furniture moving.

8. Brethren's House

Finally, we have a stop for folks who like some history with their hauntings. The  Brethren's House  was built in 1748 as a home for single men and a place of work and worship. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington had more than 5,000 of his sick and wounded troops housed here. He even paid a visit himself some years later. With so much tragedy and history here, you're not wrong to think a place like this would have some spirits floating around.

Bonus : Enjoy your time in Bethlehem and want to stay the night? Book a room at the  Hotel Bethlehem ! Bethlehem’s famous “first house,” built in 1741, was located on this site until 1823, when the Eagle Hotel replaced it. Then in 1921, Hotel Bethlehem took the Eagle’s place, at the direction of controversial multi-millionaire industrialist, Charles M. Schwab, the president of Bethlehem Steel in its heyday. Visit their site to learn more about the friendly ghosts of Historic Hotel Bethlehem.

1. D And L Trail - Delaware Canal Towpath

Upper Black Eddy

After your day in Jim Thorpe and Bethlehem, head 40 miles and start your day with a delightfully un-spooky stroll along the Delaware River, you'll replace ghost and goblins with bright autumn leaves and crisp fall air.  The Delaware Towpath  is the only remaining and intact canal of the Great Towpath Building Era of the 19th century. The surroundings paint a beautiful picture of cool flowing waters against the backdrop of the orange and red fall foliage. This is definitely a camera-worthy occasion.

2. Van Sant Covered Bridge

The Covered Bridge

Stop two brings you into the beautifully historic town of New Hope to find the  Van Sant Covered Bridge . As you enter into town, you'll want to take a moment to drive over the charming bridge that looks like it stepped out of a different century. The Van Sant Bridge was built in 1875 to help locals cross the Pidcock Creek. Aside from its picturesque beauty, the bridge is also known for never disappointing curious ghost hunters.

3. Logan Inn

The next on stop on your trip is the  Logan Inn.  Established in 1727, this is one of the nation's oldest inns. And with an old inn comes old spirits. In fact, Logan Inn has been noted as one of America's most haunted buildings. Guests and workers have become familiar with at least four different spirits who make this inn their home. Whether you meet the Revolutionary War soldiers or the ghostly little girl who greets you in the parking lot, there's a good chance you'll leave here with a cool ghost story to tell.

4. The Ghost Tours of New Hope

While you’re in town, participate in a  ghost tour of New Hope . Follow this lantern-led “walk” through the picturesque streets of New Hope to learn about the places and spaces that haunt its locals. From the Phantom Hitchhiker who may pass you in the moonlight to the historic inn where Aaron Burr appears from time to time, you'll want to bring sensible walking shoes and a flashlight and be ready to discover the mystery and history of New Hope.

5. New Hope & Ivyland Railroad

All aboard! Your final stop for today is a spooky ride on the Haunted  New Hope & Ivyland Railroad  Haunted Halloween Trail, where you'll find ghosts, goblins, and other ghouls on the nine-mile trip to Lahaska. For something less scary, take your kids on the Trick or Treat Train where assorted toys and candy will be given out as children enter in their costumes.

Bonus : Enjoying New Hope? Book a stay at the haunted  Logan Inn before you head into day 3!

1. Eastern State Penitentiary

Philadelphia

Eastern State Penitentiary

After a one-hour trip south, you'll find the  Eastern State Penitentiary , ranked the “nation’s 5th best haunted attraction” by America Online. One look at the brick towers peering over the walls and you know that this place means business — ghostly business. The penitentiary opened in 1829 and operated until the 1970's. Today it's a famous destination for ghost hunters around the globe. Stop by for a guided tour through the building. Spiritual activity seems to run the gamut.

2. Old City

Just a few miles south of the Penitentiary is  Old City . An area rich in tradition, nightlife, and oh yeah, ghosts. In this upscale area, you'll find yourself immersed in boutique stores and restaurants. But as with anything in Philly, there are centuries of history lurking beneath the surface. And with so many creepy destinations in Old City, you'll have trouble finding them all in one day. Lucky for you, there are plenty of ghost tours for you to choose from.

3. St. Peter's Cemetery

Scared enough yet? If not, head west into Society Hill to  St. Peter's Episcopal Church . This church first opened its doors on September 4, 1761. Over the centuries, it has hosted some of Colonial America's most important figures. George Washington even had a pew here. The cemetery has some intriguing stories of its own, sharing this final resting place with Revolutionary War heroes, Indian chiefs, and painters.

4. Washington Square Park

Stroll along the cobblestone streets to  Washington Square , once used as a burial ground from 1706 to 1825. More than 2,000 Revolutionary War soldiers who passed from diseases or wounds were buried here. Then during British occupation, prisoners of the Walnut Street Jail were also buried here. And finally, the grounds were used to bury the victims of the 1793 yellow fever epidemic that claimed the lives of 5,000 Philadelphians.

Bonus : Spend the night at Old City’s  Morris House Hotel  before heading into day 4! Built in 1787, the Morris House Hotel is a National Historic Landmark that has been renovated into one of the best boutique hotels in Philadelphia Historic District.

1. Colonial Pennsylvania Farmstead

Newtown Square

Hopefully you didn’t have nightmares and got some sleep to gear up for the final day of this trail. Less than an hour from the city, The Lantern Tours at Colonial Farmstead invite you to an evening of ghostly stories with scary and true tales of terror. Transport yourself through history on their torch-lit path and discover the strange ways that colonists interacted with the dead. Finish at a bonfire — if you dare- for one last tale of scares.

2. Bates Motel

Glenn Mills

Head less than five miles west and check into the  Bates Motel or the most incredible display of terror and mayhem. Considered one of the best haunted houses in America, the motel is filled with high-tech special effects and lighting. The Bates Motel takes Halloween to a new level.

3. Haunted Hayride at Arasapha Farm

Featured on the Travel Channel and rated as the number one haunted attraction in America by Haunteworld Magazine and USA Today, the hayride has been scaring visitors for more than 20 years. The  Haunted Hayride  is a 25-minute, action-packed, heart-pounding ride through the dark forest of Arasapha Farm. With scenes like a 100-foot long, 40-foot-tall drive through an insane asylum, the hayride is sure to scare.

3. Pennhurst Asylum

Spring City

Continue on your spooky ride 24 miles north at the  Pennhurst Asylum  to send chills down your spine. The hospital-themed walk-thru attraction features items and artifacts that were part of the original state school. The attraction combines high-tech animatronics, digital sound, and motivated actors, as well as fine detail and realism. Walk through the dungeon of lost souls that features a labyrinth of old cells and a series of human experiments that have gone wrong.

Weekend Trip Idea: Jim Thorpe Ghost Tours

' src=

In July of 1877, seven Irish coal miners, thought to be members of the elusive Molly Maguires and prosecuted by the Pinkerton Detective Agency, were hung in gallows erected inside the former Carbon County Prison in what was then known as Mauch Chunk, now Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania. One of the executed, widely believed to be a man by the name of Alexander Campbell, put his hand on the floor of his cell and rubbed it in the dirt. He placed it on the wall and left a print, telling everyone that it would remain there as proof of his innocence. That hand print is still visible today, even though past wardens have washed it, painted over it, and even replastered over it, or so the tale goes.

The prison isn’t used to house inmates anymore but instead has been turned into, The Old Jail Museum. The Museum is open  as a historical exhibit but on 3 Saturdays in October opens up for ghost tours.  I emailed Mary Lou McBride, who runs the museum along with her husband, who was kind enough to give me some insight into what visitors can expect during a ghost tour. She said that they can’t really predict what will go on. Sometimes they have a lot of activity in one day and other times they could go weeks with nothing. She did say that there’s more activity during the day but that some of the tours this year were particularly eventful with people feeling as if they got touched and loads of pictures with orbs, mists and black shadows turning up.

Unfortunately the ghost tours of the Old Jail Museum are over this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start planning for next year–it also doesn’t mean you can count out Jim Thorpe as a haunted destination. I’ve written about Jim Thorpe  previously. It’s a cool small town located in the Lehigh Valley that’s known for outdoor activity.

The Old Jail isn’t the only haunted location in town; It’s an old town chock full of interesting history. There’s been 220 years of mining going on in the area, at one point it was the biggest tourism destination in the country and a large fire destroyed much of the town in 1849. Walk this Way Tour provides walking ghost tours of the town from May through Labor Day while the local Rotary Club sponsors tours in the fall into December.

Both of these tours start at The Inn at Jim Thorpe , a New Orleans style hotel right in the middle of town that’s coincidentally, is also supposedly haunted. Guests of the inn have claimed to have things moved around in the middle of the night, gotten locked in the bathrooms and small children have said that they’ve seen ghosts in their beds. If you request it, they’ll gladly put you up in one of the “haunted” rooms (310,211,315 & 303 all reportedly have a lot of activity).

The Harry Packer Mansion.

The last thing worth noting is that the Harry Packer Mansion , which is also a hotel and dinner theatre locale, was the inspiration for Disney’s Haunted Mansion. Check out my previous Jim Thorpe post if you’re looking for something less scary to do during the day time or if you’re still in the mood for something Halloweenesque, travel an hour due west and check out PA’s own ghost town, Centralia.

Disney's Haunted Mansion-can you see it?

Ghost stories run rampant in Pennsylvania. That really comes as no surprise, especially with Gettysburg earning status as perhaps the most haunted town in the United States . All those ghost tales mean one thing: we have a pretty good chance of experiencing the paranormal without traveling too far from home. However, just how brave are you? Is the Inn at Jim Thorpe haunted?

There’s only really one way to decide if the Inn at Jim Thorpe in Pennsylvania is haunted, and that’s to plan a stay overnight. During the day, spend time exploring the Switzerland of Pennsylvania. The enchanting town of Jim Thorpe is known as a top fall destination in Pennsylvania , although it’s a popular spot all year around. It hosts an epic multi-weekend fall festival each October. Celebrate before checking into the haunted Inn at Jim Thorpe.

What is the most haunted hotel in Pennsylvania?

Well, “most” is a pretty subjective term when it comes to hauntings. We’ve got quite a few haunted hotels in Pennsylvania , including the Gettysburg Hotel. The site of one of the most brutal and deadly battles of the Civil War, Gettysburg is considered the most haunted town in Pennsylvania, so it’s fitting that it’s also home to a haunted hotel. Rachel, a Civil War nurse, is said to roam the halls of the hotel, in search of injured soldiers. Don’t be surprised if you wake up in the middle of the night to see her rifling through the drawers in your room. A few other apparitions, including that of a wounded soldier and a dancing woman, are also frequently seen in this historic Pennsylvania hotel. The Historic Hotel Bethlehem is also known as being incredibly haunted, but don’t worry. Those otherworldly souls who wander the hotel’s halls are friendly. Some guests also tell of seeing a young girl gazing out of one of the hotel’s windows. Weird occurrences are commonplace, too. You might hear someone calling your name or feel a tap on your shoulder, turn around, and find…you’re alone. Next time you’re in New Hope, book a stay at the Aaron Burr House. The haunted Pennsylvania hotel is said to be haunted by Burr himself, and he’s not afraid to make his presence known. If he likes you, he might pull at your shirt sleeve or follow you during your stay. He’s harmless, though.
