Stellenbosch Voted the Riders’ Favourite Host Town for 2024

Participants in the 2024 Absa Cape Epic were asked to complete a post-race survey, which not only helps the event elevate the rider experience for 2025 but also celebrates the successes of this year. One of the most coveted awards is the Host Town of the year prize. In 2024 it was won by Stellenbosch Municipality.

The highly anticipated early bird entries for the 2025 Absa Cape Epic sold out as soon as they became available. Since its inception in 2004, the Absa Cape Epic has consistently sold out, and this Monday was no exception. Many eager participants were poised and counting the seconds until registration opened at 3 pm.

A fitting and fine Grand Finale

Coetzenberg Stadium in Stellenbosch played host to a fitting final stage of the 20th Absa Cape Epic. The stage over 67km with 2000m of climbing saw dynamic, aggressive racing in all the categories and featured the coldest conditions of the week. The contrast to the heat of the week was fitting and indicative of what it takes to complete this race. Every rider who crossed the line at the Grand Finale after 603km and nearly 16 050m of climbing has a very special place in The Book of Legend.

After a week of tactical racing, the undisputed powerhouses of 2024 however, was the team of Matthew Beers and Howard Grotts (Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne) winning two stages to lay claim to the Yellow Leader Jerseys and adding to the Specialized legacy and trophy cabinet.

Beers and Grotts Grab The Gold and Debut Delight For GHOST Factory Racing

Simon Schneller and Urs Huber (BULLS Mavericks) won Stage 7 - the Grand Finale - of the Absa Cape Epic men’s race, but it was Matt Beers and Howard Grotts of Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne who claimed the overall title at the 2024 event. 

In the Aramex Women’s Category, Anne Terpstra and Nicole Koller (GHOST Factory Racing) won an eighth stage in a row on their way to the 2024 Absa Cape Epic title. By winning every stage of the 2024 race (the Prologue and seven stages), the Dutch-Swiss combo matched the performance of Laura Stigger and Sina Frei, who also won eight stages on their way to the 2021 title. 

With some tired bodies and minds amongst the elite riders - leader Matt Beers admitting to lack of sleep and stomach issues on the finish line - the early pace on the 67km, Stellenbosch Stage 7 loop was sedate by the past week’s standards.

Cool Temperatures, Hot Racing

A damp, cool morning in Stellenbosch provided a welcome respite from a week of blistering temperatures for riders on the penultimate stage of the Absa Cape Epic. Stage 6 was a testing challenge over 87km with 2400 metres of climbing featuring some of the spectacular singletrack trail network in the Stellenbosch Winelands. The route saw riders pass twice through Muratie Wine Estate in the Knorhoek Valley on the slopes of Simonsberg Mountain. From there it took in some of Dirtopia’s best riding, before heading for Stellenbosch along Morgenhof’s new singletracks. The Idas Valley trails provided a last treat before the final test up the steep Botmaskop climb before they came home to the spectacular race village in the natural amphitheatre that is Coetzenberg. 

Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne and GHOST Factory racing once again dominated their categories, winning the stage and extending their leads in the overall general classification at the same time, while there were loads of punctures and mechanicals behind them. The attrition continued further back in the field proving just why this race is not over until you roll over the line at the Grand Finale.

Penultimate Stage Proves Pivotal At 2024 Absa Cape Epic

It appears that only major disasters can prevent Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne (Matt Beers and Howard Grotts) and GHOST Factory Racing (Anne Terpstra and Nicole Koller) from winning the Men’s and Aramex Women’s Category respectively at the 2024 Absa Cape Epic.

On the 87km Stage 6 in Stellenbosch, the event’s penultimate day of racing, Toyota-Specialized-NinetyOne and GHOST Factory racing once again dominated their categories, winning the stage and extending their leads in the overall general classification at the same time.

Beers and Grotts go into Sunday’s Stage 7, known as the Grand Finale, nine minutes clear of second-placed World Bicycle Relief (Nino Schurter and Sebastian Fini) in the general classification, while in the Aramex Women’s Category, Terpstra and Koller hold a lead of just under four minutes over Cannondale Factory Racing (Candice Lill and Mona Mitterwallner) with the final day of racing to come.

Another one of the best day trips from Cape Town for marine life enthusiasts is Gansbaai.

This quaint coastal town holds the distinction of being a great destination for shark cage diving and marine wildlife encounters.

Gansbaai attracts thrill-seekers who are eager to come face to face with a shark.

The town’s well-regulated cage diving operations provide a responsible and educational way to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for the ocean’s delicate ecosystem. You can also go whale watching here!

It was once known as the “Great White Shark Capital of the World,” but unfortunately a couple of Killer Whales came into the area and attacked some Great White Sharks. Since this event, the Great White Sharks have been coming to this area less.

You can still see Bronze Whaler Sharks which seem to be coming to the area regular. If you spot a great whale shark on your tour, you are a lucky one.

There are a lot of cape fur seals hanging out at Western Cape to check out also.

When we went on our Shark Cage Diving tour, we unfortunately saw not a single shark. This can happen. Most companies offer credit to go again in the future. Don’t forget to ask. We had to push our company and then they offered it right at the end.

Beyond the adrenaline-pumping encounters, Gansbaai’s pristine beaches, charming harbor, and rugged landscapes offer a serene backdrop for those seeking relaxation and exploration.

Gansbaai’s allure extends beyond its watery wonders. The surrounding area is rich with cultural heritage, captivating landscapes, and diverse wildlife.

The Walker Bay Nature Reserve beckons adventurers with hiking trails that traverse through lush hills, offering panoramic vistas of the bay and its surroundings.

For a cool Instagram photo, you can visit the Klipgat Caves and take a picture of your silhouette against the ocean backdrop.

The nearby Dyer Island is a sanctuary for seabirds, seals, and other marine life, making it a prime destination for birdwatchers and nature lovers.

But if you are going to rent a car in Cape Town, here are some tips for driving in South African that may will help you stay safe and stress-free.

• Keep left – In South Africa, they drive on the left-hand side. Beware of this, especially when turning or pulling out on the road.
• Lock your doors while driving around Cape Town – This is something that is advised. Taxi/Uber drivers even did it when we entered the vehicle.
• Be mindful of speeding – We found that speeding is an issue in South Africa. We were overtaken at some dangerous spots by speeding cars, vans and small trucks. The speed limit is displayed on roads and highways so just do your thing and stick to the speed limit. Speeding is dangerous, especially if the roads are not in perfect condition which is a lot of the time. There are many police on the major roads watching this and you do not want to be pulled over by the police officer. Take note of the speed and stick to it.
• Keep in the left lane when on multi-lane roads/highways – The left land is for the the average flowing traffic and the right land is for vehicles to overtake.
• Have your driver’s licence or international driver’s permit on you – In case you are pulled over in Cape Town, the police will ask for your driver’s licence and may ask for your international permit. Have them in the car or on you so you are ready.
• Know where you are going before leaving – Know where you are going before you hit the road in Cape Town. If you have a passenger, get them to guide you to your day trip destination. Stick to major roads. You do not want to end up somewhere you do not want to be.
• Don’t pick up hitchhikers – You will see a lot of people in areas trying to hitch a ride. Sometimes they hold out money and their thumb. We advise not to stop or pick anyone up on your journey around South Africa.
• Always lock your car when you leave it – Even if you are at a lookout and are not too far from your car….. lock it. Keep your car and items safe and lock your car whenever you get out of it.
• Watch for wildlife – Around the Cape Town area, there are so many baboons! They are everywhere and all over the road sometimes. They are not safe to get close to so stay in the car and keep the windows up. They can cross the road unexpectedly so be prepared to stop.
• Always have some cash for toll roads – Most tolls do accept foreign cards when you are in a tourist area in Cape Town. But there are many toll roads in South Africa that don’t they do not accept foreign cards so have some cash on you just in case.
• Make sure to be back home by dark – It’s not advised to drive in South Africa after dark. We say plan out your trip and know your drive time and timing of activities. This is so you have an idea when you will return from your day trips from Cape Town accordingly. We recommend using Uber when getting around Cape Town after dark – it is so cheap. We did have an Uber driver who didn’t clock off our trip when we exited the car. It was only a tiny bit more but Uber messaged to see if we were ok. We hadn’t had that before.
• Only get out of your car in designated areas – If you need to stop while driving around Cape Town, look for designated areas. These are like a lookout, car park, designated pull over, restaurants or cafes.

Day 1: Cape Town, South Africa

Upon your arrival in Cape Town, you will be transported to your hostel. You will spend your first night out together in Cape Town getting to know each other. The city boasts over three million residents and is the Western Cape’s capital. The nightlife on Long Street is a vibrant place to explore after a short welcome meeting or dinner out together. Following a pre-departure mee ting with your group, you should ensure that you have all necessary visas for the trip. Get to know your fellow travelers as the adventure begins by putting on your dancing shoes.

You can visit a wine cooperative as an optional excursion allowing you the chance to learn about these wines while sipping your favourite overlooking the surrounding winelands. It is recommended that you book accommodation for an extra night prior to the tour, as this activity starts early in the morning. Due to the timing of this activity, it is possible that you may miss the welcome meeting on the first day of your tour. If this occurs, your guide will leave you a message outlining when and where you should meet on the second day.

Day 2: Cape Town – Cederberg, South Africa

Today, we make our way out of the city and and enjoy the stunning scenery of the Western Cape as we travel to !Khwa ttu San Culture and Education Centre where you have the rare opportunity to interact with the young San women and men while learning about their fascinating history and cultural traditions. As the group arrives at your first campsite in the afternoon, you will have free time to relax and sip on some local wine, or enjoy the swimming pool overlooking the vineyards.

Day 3: Cederberg – Orange River, South Africa

Our journey takes us northward to the South African side of the Orange (Gariep) River. Following camp setup, we indulge in some early evening swimming, unwinding and maybe even some river canoeing (optional). Or just sit by the banks and watch the water wind it’s way to some heavy rapids.

Day 4: Orange River – Fish River Canyon, Namibia

Today we cross the border into Namibia, so be sure to have your correct visa ready. We then travel through to the magnificent Fish River Canyon, the biggest in the continent and the second largest in the world. Take some time to explore the canyon rim and admire the dramatic sunset as it disappears behind the edge of the canyon. After snapping some amazing pics, we head back to camp for the rest of the evening.

The Fish River stretches 650 kms in length, making it Namibia’s longest river. It’s source is located in the eastern Naukluft Mountains and runs southwest of Ai-Ais into the Orange River. The canyon itself is situated along the lower area of the Fish River, and is one of the most remarkable natural creations of Southern Africa. It runs 550 metres deep, 27 kilometres wide and is the oldest canyon in the world, formed around 500 million years back, with some of its bottom rocks aging up to about 2,600 million years. Cat fish can be found in the River and survive the arid seasons by digging into the mud and waiting for the water to return. The levels of the water are usually highest from February to April, and the highest known temperature at the Canyon’s floor is 58 degrees Celsius.

Day 5: Fish River Canyon – Namib Desert, Namibia

We travel further north today, passing the small and isolated towns of Bethanien and Helmeringhausen on the way to the Namib Desert. Namib’ comes from the Nama culture, with the name referring to a huge savannah located in the Desert. The region is extremely arid, receiving less than 100 millimetres of yearly rainfall. After a long day driving bumpy roads, we arrive at our destination in the late afternoon. Find yourself surrounded by the red sand dunes of Sossusvlei glimmering in the light of dusk as they form the gateway to the Namib Desert. This is a truly remote area, giving you a sense of being alone with nature.

Day 6: Namib Desert, Namibia

Rise before dawn, embarking on an early morning adventure to witness the breathtaking beauty of Dune 45 as the sun rises. Venture into the surreal landscape of Deadvlei, exploring the ancient clay pan and its fascinating history. For a more intimate experience, venture into the cooler depths of Sesriem Canyon, learning about its unique geological formations and the ability to sustain wildlife within its hidden pools.

Day 7: Namib Desert – Swakopmund, Namibia

Today gives you the opportunity to truly explore the Namib Desert as you spend hours traversing across this barren area and cross through a couple of arid mountain passes. Prior to your arrival in the adrenaline capital of Swakopmund, you will travel past Walvis Bay – the only town on the Namibian shoreline that contains a deep-sea harbour. We spend two evenings in this region, where you will have time to explore the town drenched in history. Swakopmund is home to spectacular lunar landscapes, vibrant sunsets and strange prehistoric Welwitchia vegetation.

Today is free for you to explore Swakopmund and it’s many activities on offer:

Day 9: Swakopmund – Spitzkoppe, Namibia

In the morning, we make our way north to the granite rocks of Spitzkoppe. You can explore on foot and spend the evening relaxing while looking up at the beautiful night’s sky! We will be roughing a bit in the bush tonight with long-drop toilets and no running water.

Day 10: Spitzkoppe – Etosha National Park, Namibia

As we enter the park, we embark on a game drive through Etosha’s massive arid pan in search of elephant, hippo, antelope herds and lions gathered around the waterholes. Be sure to look out for Himba, Herero and Damara people along the way. They will be selling local arts, we will make stops to learn more about their products. Once the sun has set, spend some time observing wildlife at the watering holes, located close to the secure camping space that is floodlit. Daytime game drive will be in the overland truck, with an optional open vehicle night game drive on offer with a naturalist guide.

Day 11: Etosha National Park, Namibia

Today is a full day of driving in the park in search of wildlife such as lions, rhinos, elephants, giraffes, blue wildebeest, springbok, zebra, and hyenas. There is again the option of joining in on an Open Vehicle Wildlife Safari Drive with a naturalist guide who will take you in search of wildlife at dusk and into the early evening to view the nocturnal wildlife.

Day 12: Etosha National Park – Waterberg Plateau, Namibia

We head south and make our way to the Waterberg Plateau. Here you have the afternoon to spend at your leisure. The Waterberg Plateau offers scenic hiking trails so feel free to spend the afternoon hiking, alternatively spend your afternoon unwinding next by the pool.

Day 13 :Waterberg Plateau – Windhoek, Namibia

Head south through Namibia’s countryside to Windhoek after leaving the Waterberg Plateau National Park. In addition to your included lunch, you will stop at a restaurant outside of Windhoek – the Penduka Village Restaurant & Shop

Day 15: D’kar – Maun, Botswana

We say goodbye to the sands of the Kalahari and jump in the Lando towards Maun. We arrive around lunchtime. This beautiful setting makes for a great place to relax, journal, take photos, and enjoy some leisure time. You can set up camp in the evening and relax with friends while looking at shooting stars above from your sleeping bag as the night settles.

Please Note: The Okavango Delta excursion takes one night and two days, starting from Maun. Each person should bring a 5 liter water bottle into the Delta; this should provide sufficient drinking water as well as cleaning water.

Day 16: Maun – Okavango Delta, Botswana

It’s going to be a busy day, but one that’s going to be fun! An overnight excursion into the Okavango Delta allows you to experience the sounds and smells of the bush all around you. On the way to our basic bush camp for the evening, we will travel by mokoro (dugout canoe) and do some bird watching. Upon arrival, set up camp and get acquainted with the area. A wildlife walk will provide you with some adventure. Seeing the animals on foot gives you a greater understanding of their movement patterns and behavior than observing them from a vehicle. Join the locals in singing songs around the campfire, or just relax with a sundowner while counting the stars. As our camp is very basic and in the wild, there is no shower and only a dug-out bush toilet – but the stunning landscape and wildlife are all worth it!

Day 17: Okavango Delta – Gweta, Botswana

Watch the light turn the landscape into a variety of pinks, oranges, and reds as you wake up to the sight of the sun rising. When you’re out in the middle of nowhere, you can’t help but feel completely isolated. Cherish those moments! Once you have rubbed the sleep from your eyes, grab your cameras and take another safari walk before riding in a mokoro back to Maun, where you will pack up your Land Rover and drive to the ancient baobab trees of Gweta. Arrival at the campsite will take place mid-to-late afternoon. Enjoy a nice shower after spending the night in the bush, walk around, take pictures of the baobabs, and swim in the pool.

Day 18: Gweta – Kasane, Botswana

Start your day early and travel north to Kasane with your group. You have the option to do the Chobe River Sunset Cruise and spot some of the many elephants on the shores of the Chobe River. “I bless the rains down in Africaaaaa” ahh we can just hear it now… people must be playing this song between Gweta and Kasane while driving through the verdant lands. The rains in Africa are no joke, so Toto knew what they meant. When the rain falls, the pans come to life with dormant fish and aquatic shrimps emerging from the mud. Many predators are attracted to the surrounding grasslands, which also teem with life. As you camp under the stars, reward yourself with a group toast as you watch the world pass by. Chobe National Park is where you’ll see the largest elephant population in Southern Africa. An optional sunset boat cruise on the Chobe River will provide the best opportunity to observe the area’s thousands of elephants, crocodiles, and hippos. Today you have the option of visiting the magnificent Victoria Falls. Spanning about a mile wide across and falling 108 m into a narrow gorge below, the spray from the falls can sometimes be seen from kilometres away. In the dry season, the view of the falls is unobstructed by mist, and it's possible to see little islets in the river below. To fully understand the sheer force of this staggering curtain of water, it needs to be experienced in person. It's no wonder that the local name Mosi oa Tunya means the 'smoke that thunders'. Alternatively, your leader will be able to recommend a range of other activities that are available.

The Victoria Falls entrance fee is not included, as it’s mandatory for tour groups with pre-purchased tickets to have a local escort. We feel that seeing these waterfalls for the first time should be an uninterrupted experience.

This morning is free for you to continue enjoying all that Victoria Falls has to offer. Afterwards, travel to Chobe National Park in Botswana via the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust, one of The Intrepid Foundation’s projects. Here you can learn about the rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife, human-wildlife conflict and the Trust’s role in anti-poaching. There may also be a chance to meet any rescued or orphaned wildlife currently in their care. Continue your journey to Botswana's first national park, which is famous for its high concentration of elephants, so keep an eye out! They can often be seen swimming in the Chobe River.

• Victoria Falls - Visit to Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

Your camp, located outside of the park, has flush toilets, showers, wi-fi, ATMs and optional upgrades. Speak to an Intrepid booking agent before your trip or your leader on the day for information about upgrades (subject to availability).

Rise and shine for an early-morning game drive. Adventuring through the park, you will get the opportunity to get up close to the wildlife – with luck you will spot a variety of animals and any number of exotic birds. As well as the Chobe icon, the elephant, the river also attracts hippos and crocodiles – the latter like to sun themselves by the water's edge. Cheetahs also come down for a drink. The birdwatching is excellent here too – look out for eagles, kingfishers and marabou storks, among hundreds of other species. In the afternoon perhaps take an optional cruise down the Chobe River – one of the best ways to enjoy the park's animals.

Today you will enter Namibia, driving from Kasane to Ngoma Bridge, and on to your camp at Bagani. Bagani is a small, friendly town with some good hiking trails along the river. There are also plenty of nice spots in which you can simply relax and soak up the ambience. This area is the homestead of the local Mbukushu kings. You will have the opportunity to stop at an ATM and a market or shop today. Your camp has flush toilets, showers and wi-fi. Upgrades are also available (subject to availability).

Drive across the border into Botswana and head south along the Okavango Panhandle (the narrowest part of the delta) to Seronga. Here you'll leave your vehicle and join your transport for the journey into the delta. Take a boat across the swamps to Gao Island to meet your mokoro team and start exploring the Okavango Delta with them. Each mokoro (small dugout canoe) takes two people and is poled along through the waterways by a local tribesman. Reeds and lily pads line the streams, and birds startled by the mokoros rise out of the long grasses. Punting along, you'll hear hippos occasionally piercing the peaceful atmosphere with their grunts. On the first night here, you'll camp on an island well away from civilisation.

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Continue your trip around the delta and then return to Gao Island before heading to the relative civilisation of Umvuvu Camp. This camp usually has hot showers, and there's a small bar at which you can relax and perhaps enjoy a refreshing sundowner. Today there is an option to take a nature walk with your guide. This is a great chance to discover the beautiful natural surrounds, gain some insight into the history of the local area and look out for animals such as giraffe, zebra and elephants.

• Okavango Delta - Nature Walk

Cross the border back into Namibia and return to Bagani to camp for the night. Various boat trips and guided hikes are possible from Bagani, so if you're feeling active, get out and make the most of it. Those who are feeling bold might even be able to challenge the local kids to a soccer match – don't expect to win though! Retire to your camp in the evening and enjoy this welcome break from the road.

Drive to your camp situated 50 km outside of Grootfontein. The town of Grootfontein, part of the Otavi Triangle, tends to get very green in the warmer months but dries out markedly in the winter. If it's springtime, you'll likely see jacarandas in bloom.

There is the possibility of an accommodation upgrade here, but wi-fi will not be available. Speak to an Intrepid booking agent or your leader for more information.

Embark on a 180-km (112-mile) round-trip to visit the San people. The oldest inhabitants of southern Africa, the San, have lived in this region for at least 20,000 years. Listen to their stories and songs and learn how those who still adhere to a traditional way of life emphasise the importance of living in harmony with the environment.

• Grootfontein - San Bushman cultural experience

Travel to Etosha National Park this morning. While Etosha National Park is home to a wide range of southern Africa's wildlife, including the big carnivores and five rare or endangered species: black rhino, Hartmann's mountain zebra, black-faced impala, roan antelope and the tiny Damara dik-dik. Game viewing in Etosha is relatively easy due to the man-made waterholes and the large, sparsely vegetated pans. The bushland surrounding the pans is difficult to see through, but there are enough clearings, pans and waterholes to usually allow for some sightings. Embark on an optional evening game drive here in the evening, then spend the night at Namutoni. Accommodation upgrades are on offer here.

• Etosha National Park - Evening Game Drive - ZAR750

Your travel time today will be approximately 6 hours.

Enjoy a full-day game drive in Etosha National Park. Namibia has protected its game reserves against poaching, which means significant numbers of elephants, antelope and other herbivores reside here. The park is also home to some 340 species of birds – keep an eye to the sky where you might spot a soaring eagle. Tonight, you will stay at the particularly spectacular Okaukuejo Camp. The camp overlooks a floodlit waterhole visited by many different species throughout the day and night. Upgrades are not available at this location tonight.

• Etosha National Park - Overland Vehicle Game Drive

Travel to the mountain of Spitzkoppe or the 'Matterhorn of Namibia' today. The wild lands around this superb granite peak are some of Namibia's most stunning. The mountain itself is 700 million years old and 1987 m (6519 ft) high. Although you shouldn't try to climb to the top, there are some excellent hikes to do in the area, rich in plant life and with some bush paintings to be found. The Spitzkoppe is known for its stunning beauty and the thousands of ancient Bushmen rock art paintings that are still viewable. Be sure to look out for the sunset from your bush camp this evening – the landscape is known to take on dazzling hues of orange and red.

Continue to the town of Swakopmund. Be dazzled by the sight, sound and smell of thousands of olive-coloured seals on the shores of Cape Cross while you're travelling up the Atlantic Coast. You'll be able to stop along the way to access an ATM and market if you need some supplies.

Surrounded by the massive dune fields of the Namib Desert on three sides and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, Swakopmund is an example of the German culture found in all major settlements in Namibia. With your free time, maybe wander the streets and explore at your own pace or ask your leader for recommendations on activities and dining options.

Today is another free day to enjoy this fun beachside town. If you're after a dose of history and culture, you can stop in at the lighthouse and visit the Swakopmund Museum. Active types and thrillseekers might like to take advantage of the many outdoor activities on offer – this town is the adventure sports mecca of Namibia.

Drive to Sesriem, your base for exploring the incredible Namib Desert region. The most famous part of the Namib Desert is its vast dune fields, the most spectacular of which are found near the Sesriem Canyon. This canyon was formed when the Tsauchab River carved a gorge 30 metres into the gravel deposits about 15 million years ago. Now, the river flows out to the dune fields that stretch for hundreds of miles up the coast and dries up in a clay pan at Sossusvlei. The dunes – the highest in the world – are stunning, with magnificent flaming tones created by the brightly coloured sands.

Wake up before dawn and scramble to the top of the dunes for a dramatic sunrise view across a vast sea of sand. The colour changes are simply incredible and provide a spectacular setting for your brunch. Afterwards you will jump in the back of a pickup truck for a trip to Sossusvlei, the incredible salt and clay pan just nearby. Enjoy some time to explore this incredible and mysterious desert oddity. Later, continue to your camp past the small town of Bethanie. Your camp has basic facilities, with showers, flush toilets, wi-fi and optional upgrades.

Check out the town of Bethanie before heading further south into the vast desert lands of Namibia towards Fish River Canyon. At 500 m deep and over 160 km long, Fish River Canyon is one of the very largest canyons in the world. During the dry season, the riverbed tends to dry out completely, leaving only a few puddles. In the wet season, after the summer rains, the river can turn into a spectacular raging torrent. At any time of year there are remarkable photographic opportunities here as you watch the colour of the granite rocks change as the sun goes down.

Departing Fish River Canyon, travel to Noordoewer in southern Namibia. Pitch your tent on the scenic banks of the Gariep (Orange) River, which stretches 2200 kilometres (1367 miles) – the longest river in Lesotho. The river’s source is high up in the Drakensberg mountain range, and it flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Alexander Bay in South Africa. The Orange River is responsible for transporting diamonds and creating the deposits that can be found along the Namibian coast.

Depart your camp first thing in the morning and head to Klawer, a town named after the Afrikaans word for a wild clover blooming after rainfall. The surrounding countryside is beautiful, and if there's time, you’ll have the opportunity to explore some of it. Perhaps take a delightful walk around the nearby mountains and farms before settling in for a relaxing evening.

Head to Cape Town this morning, where your trip will come to an end. With its stunning coastline, modern cityscape, nearby mountains and a plethora of vineyards within reach, this is one of Africa's most exciting cities. Kick things off with a full-day safari at Addo Elephant National Park before journeying west along the stunning coast. Hike through the rugged beauty of Tsitsikamma, Robberg Nature Reserve, and Knysna, then drive the jaw-dropping Tradouw Pass to Barrydale for a curated lunch and wine tasting. Wrap up with a few blissful days in the winelands of Franschhoek, soaking in the scenery and flavours. You’ll finish this trip feeling relaxed, inspired, and ready for more adventures in Cape Town.

Day 1 Port Elizabeth

Welcome to South Africa and to Port Elizabeth. In the afternoon, your CEO will provide a welcome briefing and a guided orientation around Port Elizabeth. Later on, choose to join your new friends and CEO for an optional group dinner.

Exclusive Inclusions:

Day 2 day trip to addo national park.

Experience the wildlife and landscapes of Addo Elephant National Park during a morning safari drive with knowledgeable guides in search of rhinos, lions, buffalo, leopards, and of course, elephants. Have a picnic breakfast out in the bush and finish the drive in the afternoon. There will be free time to have lunch in the area before returning to Port Elizabeth to spend a leisurely evening on your own.

Meals included:

Day 3 port elizabeth/tsitsikamma.

After breakfast depart for Tsitsikamma National Park, part of the famed Garden Route on the South Coast of South Africa. The area is valued for its diverse natural and cultural heritage. Enjoy a CEO-led hike along the Mouth Trail and wander along a winding boardwalk through the forest. In the afternoon partake in the Big Tree walk with your CEO, which will take you through indigenous forest to an eight hundred-year-old Yellowwood towering over the rest of the canopy. The remainder of the evening is at your leisure.

Day 4 Tsitsikamma

Enjoy an entire free day in the Tsitsikamma area. Choose between optional activities like, the Woodcutters’ Journey, a tree canopy tour, a seasonal whale watching excursion, or whitewater tubing. Your opportunity to remain active awaits. Have dinner with the group back at the hotel in the evening.

Day 5 Tsitsikamma/Knysna

In the morning the group will visit the Robberg Nature Reserve featuring stunning coastal scenery and some of the best hiking in the country. Walk along the Gap Circuit and see evidence of the prehistoric break-up of the supercontinent of Gondwanaland some 120 million years ago.

Travel onwards to Knysna for an orientation drive along the waterfront, through the town centre, to the hip eateries and shops on Thesen Island, and through the lush landscapes of the Knysna Forest full of indigenous trees. Arrive back in town for a free afternoon to enjoy optional activities or to simply relax in the beauty of your surroundings.

Day 6 Knysna

Breakfast will be had at the hotel before an included visit to The Knysna Heads, which enclose and form the Knysna River Estuary. Visit some of the main attractions on the Eastern Head, walk along a pathway at the foot of the cliffs and learn about the importance of the land to the local population. Spend the remainder of the day as you wish and try some of the optional activities, like an oyster tour which the area is known for.

Day 7 Knysna/Franschhoek

Rise early for a long, but jam-packed day of epic scenery and unforgettable sights as you drive the more scenic way from Knysna to Franschhoek. First stop is the harbour town of Mossel Bay to visit the lighthouse and walk in the area. Drive along Tradouw Pass next, through the lesser-known gem of Gatplaats Nature Reserve for a short walk and enjoy hilly views to reach the town of Barrydale. Have an included outdoor lunch at a local restaurant and enjoy a wine tasting. Arrive to Franschhoek in the evening and have dinner on your own.

Day 8 Franschhoek

Start the morning off with a CEO-led orientation walk along Franschhoek’s main street. The remainder of the day is free for optional activities like a guided bike tour Stellenbosch, a history and art tour, or perhaps a winery visit in a region celebrated for its delicious grape varieties. Dinner this evening will be on your own.

Day 9 Franschhoek/Cape Town

Leave the picturesque winelands of Franschhoek behind this morning and depart for Cape Town. Stop along the way to walk up the city’s iconic Signal Hill and site of the Noon Gun, one of Cape Town’s oldest living traditions. Enjoy the fantastic views from the top and catch a full glimpse of Cape Town's many landmarks. The tour ends upon arrival in Cape Town around 1:30pm.
