19 of the best Nile cruises for 2024

Discover egypt’s past on a voyage along the world’s longest river with one of these unforgettable nile cruises.

Traditional felucca boats on the Nile at Luxor

S ailing the River Nile is a bucket-list experience. Since the first tourists travelled down the river in 1869, it has attracted visitors enthralled by Egypt’s pharaohs, prophets and pyramids. The world’s longest river flows through 11 African countries for 4,100 miles before spilling out into the Mediterranean, but it’s the Upper Nile, which snakes through southern Egypt, that offers the most cruise itineraries. These visit some of the country’s famous ruins and archaeological discoveries, including the Valley of the Kings, Luxor, Aswan and the Temple of Horus. Cruises operate year-round but sailings between October and May will avoid scorching summer temperatures. Whether you choose to sail on a modern cruise ship, a restored paddle steamer or even a traditional two-masted dahabiya, these are some of the best Nile cruises and itineraries for this journey of a lifetime.

1. G Adventures: Pyramids, Temples & the Nile

A traditional dahabiya cruises the Nile at sunset

Best for a dahabiya experience Leave the crowded ports to the oversized ships and opt for a more serene sailing with G Adventures. Its ten-day Egypt: Pyramids, Temples & the Nile itinerary includes four nights in Cairo and five on board a traditional dahabiya, which has no engine so you can sit back and listen to the sounds of the waves. With just ten cabins, it can dock at small sites close to villages for a more authentic experience. These include a visit to a nonprofit charity working with young people in the West Bank, a barbeque on a remote island in the middle of the Nile and a trip to Nubian village for mint tea with a local family.

2. ms farah: taste of egypt.

Best for on-board experience The real attraction of a Nile cruise lies on dry land, but guests on an Avalon Waterways cruise will be in no hurry to disembark. This ship has 56 deluxe cabins and two suites, and all have oversized balconies to watch the world sail by. Treats on board include free use of a sauna and steam room, complimentary wi-fi, barbecue lunches and dinners on the sun deck, a library and welcome amenities including a fruit basket and canapés. Guests can join an Egyptian cooking class, use a telescope to stargaze or attend a lecture by an Egyptologist. Ten-day Taste of Egypt itineraries feature five nights in Cairo, including lunches in local restaurants, trips to the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Aswan High Dam, and an optional dinner cruise with live music and belly dancing.

3. MS Nile Plaza: Cairo, Alexandria and a Nile Cruise

Best for visiting Alexandria While most cruises include time in Cairo before sailing from Luxor, Titan Travel’s Cairo, Alexandria and a Nile Cruise itinerary also squeezes in a full-day excursion to the port city of Alexandria, the former capital of ancient Egypt. The 12-day tour includes seven nights on the MS Nile Plaza with its restaurant, bar and sundeck, two and a half days of free time and even a VIP transfer from your home for your flight to Cairo. Highlights of the sailing include the Valley of the Queens, the beautiful Temple of Philae and an excursion on a traditional wooden felucca.

4. Mövenpick MS Darakum: Wonders of the Nile, Cairo to Luxor

A cabin on MS Darakum

Best for watching the world go by Those who like to take the long route and stay on a boat for the duration of their Egyptian adventure in Egypt will enjoy a cruise on the 52-cabin MS Darakum. Thanks to its very low draft, it is one of the few vessels that can sail from Cairo to Luxor. After an intoxicating few days in the capital, exploring its markets, mosques and ancient wonders, it’s time to travel south. The beauty of covering a much longer distance than a traditional Nile cruise is the extra time it allows to simply sit and watch the world go by. Riviera Travel’s Wonders of the Nile: Cairo to Luxor itinerary is sprinkled with long and leisurely sailing days where there’s little to do except relax on the sun deck and gaze out at the small farms and date plantations, before retreating inside to attend the fascinating onboard lectures.

As well as all the usual big hitters, there are plenty of offbeat options that make this an eye-opening choice for the curious traveller. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the impressive seventh-century St Simeon Monastery, the nearby traditional Nubian village and the chance to see Cleopatra’s unfinished obelisk.

10. SS Sudan: On the River Nile

SS Sudan

Best for Agatha Christie lovers One of the most historic and atmospheric vessels to ply the Nile’s waters, this celebrated 19th-century steamer once welcomed Agatha Christie aboard. It is widely believed that it was that trip in 1933, accompanying her husband on an archaeological mission, which paved the way for one of her most accomplished murder mysteries. Following Kenneth Branagh’s 2022 adaptation of Death on the Nile , the SS Sudan is the perfect ship for fans of the Queen of Crime; there are cabins named after Christie and her character Hercule Poirot. The boat exudes opulent period charm, from the teak decks and parquet flooring to the brass bed frames in many of the rooms. Guests also have exclusive access to a network of expert archaeologists who will help bring the historical ruins to life.

11. SS Misr: Timeless Nile

SS Misr

Best for traditionalists Misr, which means “Egypt” in Arabic, is a propeller steamer that has long enjoyed a romance with this country. Built in Preston in 1918 by the Royal Navy, in 1938 it was converted into a luxury yacht that played host to King Farouk, the country’s penultimate monarch. The vessel has now been fully restored to its former glory, and its 12 and 14-night trips are known for celebrating local food — there’s a rather regal feeling inside the main Marasem restaurant, with framed photos of past royalty dotted about and waiters smartly dressed in attire inspired by the glory days of Farouk. The food is largely international but local flavours are celebrated in dishes such as bessara, a local dip made from fava beans.

La Flaneuse du Nil

Best for return visitors For those who have already sailed the Nile and may be looking for something different, La Flaneuse du Nil is a tempting option. While most boats travel north from Aswan towards Luxor, this intimate five-day cruise heads south into Lake Nasser bound for the rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel. Powered by sails and tugs, just like the original dahabiyas that were once a regular sight on the waterway, this cosy vessel showcases the subtle beauty of the vast man-made reservoir that straddles Egypt’s border with Sudan. The boat sails at a leisurely pace, with stops for lake swims, sunset hikes and solitary mornings on quiet beaches, as well as guided trips to some of the most impressive ancient wonders Egypt has to explore.

14. Sanctuary Sun Boat III: luxury cruise

Sanctuary Sun Boat III

Best for fun on the river An extremely attractive boat, and one of the few vessels to (occasionally) cruise from Cairo to Aswan, the Sanctuary Sun Boat III takes its inspiration from the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s. Think ecru tones, four-poster beds draped in the finest Egyptian linen and entertainment in the form of belly dancers and whirling dervishes. There are modern touches, too, with air conditioning and a swimming pool on the Cleopatra Oasis sundeck: the perfect spot on which to sip a hibiscus juice and watch the world go by.

TUI Steigenberger Royale (Minerva) Nile Cruise Luxor Aswan

Excellent Nile Cruise. Booked the MS Minerva, but was switched to Royale. Royale was a bit of a downgrade relative to the pictures on the TUI site. Food was good and well prepared. All staff very friendly. Guide for the temples (Tariq) was excellent. Excursions were well thought through and the group was well looked after throughout. Very good value for money and great introduction to Egyptian culture.

We stayed on the MS Semiramis lll Nile Cruise boat very dated in need of renovation. We one engine that had engine failure so ended up going very slow, but still got to see the sights that we paid for. But overall we enjoyed our time on cruise,So apart for that we enjoyed the trips we had booked the guide ( Abram ) we had was excellent and was very informative we could not have had a better guide. Food repetitive but not to bad found something to eat. If did another nile cruise would have a better quality boat.

We have previously done this trip and was excited to relive the experience Our trip included 2 night stay before and after in hurghada at Labranda Royal Makadi , transfers with Meeting Point and 7 night Nile Cruise All inclusive throughout On arrival at Hurghada the meeting point rep met us and arranged our visas then we were to meet him downstairs after we had cleared security etc, unfortunately he was no where to be seen , asking other reps , they said the office was closed but tried to ring the number on our booking only to discover it was 2 numbers short! We had to get a private taxi which cost £22 to the hotel , not a great start and obviously worried we would be let down to be taken to Luxor when we leaving As we had no information of pick up times We addressed our concerns with our agent and also the hotel the next day , there is a meeting point office In reception BUT no English rep available and the German reps didn’t want to know ! The hotel did give us a time eventually of what time our transfer would be there so we could relax and enjoy our time at the hotel Transfer arrived on time , the trip would take 5 hours on a small bus to Luxor The rep never spoke English and the whole journey all information and facts were spoken in German , never once were we acknowledged Our rep Ernest met us at the ship and after being allocated our room we had a welcome meeting which was for the itinerary and extra excursions also tips were paid for upfront £27 each Ernest was lovely and was very enthusiastic to make sure our trip was wonderful TheNile odyssey was a nice ship , bit tired and dated but clean an welcoming The food in the restaurant was buffet style for all meals , bit repetitive and some days we struggled to find something we could eat We were docked in Luxor for 2 days and felt the excursions were crammed in , it was hard going to be honest and not expected , the itinerary had been changed for other guests arriving later Most of the sailing was done through the night so the magic of sailing down the Nile was disappointing We had done the Kom Ombo excursion but on our way back to Luxor we had to stop again for the guests who had not been. Total chaos docking here … so many ships inches away from each other We were in between 2 large ships for 2 & half hours while the excursion for the other guests took place , noisy and lots of diesel engines blowing out smelly black smoke , Awful experience for the last part of our journey, again not what we had signed up for The highlight of our trip for me was the hot air balloon ride we did the next morning on our last day. 3am start for the sunrise adventure! The ship provided a substantial breakfast bag and the organisation by the company Excellent Air Balloons was outstanding! This trip had previously been cancelled due to weather conditions so still wasn’t 100% that it would go ahead On arrival at the field where many balloons were lay out ready to inflated , we waited and updates were given every 15 minutes, we had until 7.30am then we would have to leave to get back to the ship for our transfer back to the hotel ! We were back on the bus thinking it wouldn’t happen when at the very last minute the door opened and we were good to go! These guys were all for it happening and the whole team were outstanding! It was the most amazing experience and a wonderful way to end our Nile Cruise! Egypt is a place of many wonders and fascinating history and we are grateful that we have experienced it, but the relentless pressure and aggravation to buy things wears you down , we appreciate the poverty that is there , but found it so stressful to even look at anything if we wanted to buy because you are surrounded by people from everywhere, it is intimidating at times and even frightening Sadly this will be our last trip to Egypt

We truly enjoyed our 4 day/3 night Nile cruise. It was wonderful to pull up to the temples and be within walking distance. We enjoyed the pools on the top deck while cruising and the comfortable lounge. Meals were delicious and offered a variety of tasty food. Definitely splurge on an massage for your tired tourist muscles. You won’t regret it. Everyone was fantastic but Mido in reception did a fantastic job of making us feel welcome!

egypt nile cruise tui

We were booked on Nile Style boat through Egypt Tours Portal (see separate review on ETP). The 5 days 4 nights cruise exceeded my expectation. Although the boat is not exactly 5 stars as advertised, the crew provided excellent services. They were attentive, friendly and personable. We were on level 3 and the room is small but I would say all the basics were provided. The bathroom is comfortable. My only gripe was the rough bedsheet which I had to sleep for 4 nights :-(. Lunch and dinner on the boat were good and plentiful. We especially enjoyed our daily doses of latte served without our prompting! The other highlight was we were able to see how the vendors parked their small boats against our cruise ship and selling us all kind of goods. The negotiating of prices and throwing up & down the stuff to the sundeck were amazing to watch. Another pleasant surprise was when we got back to our rooms after each day excursion, the housekeeping used the towels to fold them into crocodile and elephants in our rooms - mood uplifting after a tired day! The cruise organized parties every evening and the highlight would be the belly dancing and tanoura dance. Our excursions to places of attractions - Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, Valley of Kings, Abu Simbel etc were enjoyable except for the unforgiving weather. The excursions usually lasted half a day and you could use the other half relaxing on the boat. Egypt has plenty to see and tours could be very intense with early start and late finish. Nile river cruising offers a different way of travelling. The tips we were told to give to the crew was a lumpsum (not cast in stone) and the crew would split amongst themselves. Highly recommend the Nile River cruise but do choose a good ship to ride on.

Many thanks for great information!

egypt nile cruise tui

Based on the review here, we booked on the Sonesta Moon Goddess March, 2023. We were disappointed. The rooms were indeed classic and comfortable. The carpets in the hall were old and stained. The HVAC systems in the room did not work properly despite engineering’s best efforts. Hot water was often hard to come by. The most disappointing element was the food. This was served buffet style, and almost never maintained hot. It was as if I had returned to my high school cafeteria. The staff were attentive and tried to please.

The review above does not reflect on the current state of affairs.

Tui is to start River Nile cruises served by charter flights from Gatwick and Manchester airport.

A refurbished 145-passenger ship will run seven-night sailings from Luxor striating in November 2024.

Named Tui Al Horeya, the vessel will operate on an all-inclusive basis and include cabins for solo holidaymakers.

Dedicated Egyptologists will feature while facilities on board include a swimming pool, two whirlpools, an entertainment area, restaurant, outdoor dining, lounge bar, wellness studio and a shop.

Two flights a week on Thursdays will operate to serve the ship between November 7, 2024 and April 24, 2025.

Two set excursions will be included within the sailing package price, such as the Temple of Horus in Edfu and the temple of Kom Ombo.

Prices lead-in at £1,399 based on two adults sharing a superior French balcony cabin with flights from Gatwick on December 5, 2024.

Tui Al Horeya will be the fourth in the Tui River Cruise fleet of adult-only ships.

The expansion into Egypt comes on the back of strong demand from customers, with bookings increasing by 40% over last year.

All three European ships will go on sale for festive sailings in winter 2024, including two new seven-night itineraries over New Year’s Eve in Frankfurt and Cologne in addition to an existing Rhine itinerary.

Managing director Chris Hackney said: “Tui River Cruises is going from strength to strength, and we are so excited to introduce this latest offering on the Nile which we are confident our customers will love.

“A cruise along the Nile offers a serene and unforgettable experience with lush landscapes, traditional villages, and other iconic landmarks such as the Luxor and Edfu Temples.

“With year-round sunshine, Egypt is the perfect destination for exploring ancient history and allowing guests to immerse themselves in a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“The name TUI Al Horeya was chosen to ensure we kept local connection to Egypt, as it is our only Tui River Cruise ship which will stay in the one country. TUI Al Horeya in Arabic means ‘freedom’, signifying the freedom the water brings to explore which is a great representation of what river cruising is all about.”

How to Pick the Best Nile Cruise in Egypt: Our Top Tips

Egyptians have been cruising down the Nile for thousands of years, so it makes sense that a  Nile River cruise  is one of the best ways to see and explore some of the top attractions and sites that this country has to offer. However, since it’s such a popular way to travel through Egypt there is no shortage of Nile cruise options which can make things a little tricky and confusing for those booking or planning a Nile cruise for the first time. Don’t worry though, in this article we’re going to break down the differences in Nile cruises including the top things to look for and consider for when it comes time for you to book your own  Egypt tour .

nile cruise

What Do You See on a Nile Cruise?

Most Nile cruises travel between  Luxor  and  Aswan , stopping at key points of interest along the way which are:

Luxor is home to several of Egypt’s most inspiring and interesting attractions. Here you can find  the Valley of Kings , filled with the tombs of ancient Pharaohs of years past. While many of these tombs have been discovered, many still remain hidden in these hills. You’ll also see some of the country’s best known temples:  Karnak Temple ,  Luxor Temple , and the Temple of Queen  Hatshepsut .

Additional sites worth noting are the Colossi of Memnon, the Valley of the Queens, and several museums including the fascinating mummification museum. Luxor is also one of the top places in the world for a  hot air balloon ride . See the  Nile river  and the Valley of the Kings from above as the dawn breaks, it’s a magical experience.

Queen Hatshepsut Temple in Luxor

The temple of Edfu , which is dedicated to the god Horus, is one of the top temples to visit in Egypt for one main reason: it’s the best preserved temple in the country. Edfu temple managed to escape damage from the Nile floods and the carvings and hieroglyphics here have been incredibly helpful to archeologists and Egyptologists in terms of learning about the temple rituals of ancient Egypt.

The temple of Edfu is the second biggest temple in Egypt (Karnak being the largest) and took over 200 years to build. Some of the most notable attractions within the temple include the Nilometer, which was used to measure the height of the Nile to help predict future harvests, the Passage of Victory, which depicts the battle between Horus and Seth, and the Hypostyle Hall where you can find carvings of the ingredients and recipes needed to make different perfumes.

Kom Ombo  is just a small stop, but the temple is definitely worth a visit. It’s an interesting temple because it is dedicated to two different ancient Egyptian gods; Horus the falcon god and Sobek the crocodile god. Even though it is one temple, it has two of everything: entrances, halls, courts, and sanctuaries.

Another must-see in Kom Ombo is the crocodile museum. Perhaps you saw the human mummies in the museum in Egypt, but here you can see 22 mummies of crocodiles. You’ll even get to see some crocodile coffins- bet you haven’t seen one of those before!

Aswan , in southern Egypt, will likely be the start or end point of your Nile cruise depending on which direction you choose to go. Aswan doesn’t have the massive temples that Luxor does, but it still has plenty to see and do including  the Nubian village , the spice market, and the beautiful botanical gardens. From Aswan, you can also see the famous  High Dam  along the  temple of Philae  which is dedicated to Horus, and Elephantine Island which has plenty of interesting ancient artefacts.

Aswan is also the gateway for one of Egypt’s most impressive and important ancient attractions:  Abu Simbel . Those who want to see this incredible site can take a short flight from Aswan or a three-hour car journey.

Don’t forget, one of the big reasons why a Nile cruise is such a great way to see Egypt is because of the scenic cruising. As you pass through the cities listed above you’ll be able to see some of the monuments and attractions all lit up in the dark. While, during the day, you’ll pass beautiful Nile vistas where you can see local Egyptian communities and gorgeous landscapes.

It is also possible to do a longer Nile cruise that starts in  Cairo  and ends in Aswan, however, these are not as popular due to how long they are. Most people prefer the Luxor-Aswan route as it can be done in less than a week, allowing you to spend the rest of your  Egypt vacation  exploring others parts of the country. That being said, it is an option if you would like to do a 2-week cruise.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Nile Cruise

How long do you want to cruise for.

One of the first thing you will want to determine is how long you want to cruise for. Do you only have a couple of days? Or do you have a week? Cruises vary in length, even though go along the same route.

Some cruises are as short as 4 days, 3 nights but to really get the best experience it is recommended that you do at least 5 days and 4 nights. This will give a much better Nile cruise experience and won’t feel as rushed with your  private Egyptologist guide .

On the other hand, depending on the type of traveller you are, you may want to make sure you don’t cruise for too long. While Nile cruises are a fantastic and relaxing way to sight-see in Egypt, some people can find them restricting. In this case, you probably won’t want to book a cruise that is one week or longer.

Where Do You Want to Start your Nile Cruise?

Nile cruises start in one of two destinations: Aswan or Luxor. There is no difference between the cruises depending on the start place; you will stop at the same sights and attractions along the way, however, there are a couple of things worth taking into consideration.

When it comes to things to do in Luxor, a lot of people want to do a hot air balloon ride over the Nile and the Valley of Kings. If this is on your list of things to do, you’ll have to plan your cruise around this activity. Since the hot air balloon rides happen at sunrise you will, normally, have enough time to do the balloon ride before your cruise starts. That being said, it is a very early morning start so you may not want to jump from the balloon ride right into sight-seeing which will be the case if you plan for both on the same day.

Alternatively, in Aswan, many people choose to do an early morning trip to Abu Simbel temple in southern Egypt which can be reached by either car or plane. Again, this is an early morning activity that can generally be timed to fit with the cruise, but that is something you will want to check with your tour provider.

Other considerations are; what direction are you going in and what day of week are you leaving on? If you are exploring the country with  Egypt tailor made tours , then they will have this discussion with you and plan your Nile cruise accordingly.

What Style of Nile Cruise are you Looking for?

There is a lot of variety when it comes to  Egyptian Nile cruises . The cheapest and most basic option is one of the felucca boats. While these may be traditionally charming, don’t expect much. You’ll sleep on the deck and, it is important to note, not all feluccas have toilets on board.

Chances are, that’s not quite what you had in mind for a Nile cruise, but there are plenty of cruises with private rooms and proper plumbing. Of course, these vary as well. Do you want a top of the line, luxury cruise with nightly entertainment and fine dining? Or, are you just looking for something comfortable with private rooms and normal inclusions? You’ll find several options to fit both of these styles of cruising.

What is your Budget for a Nile Cruise?

This point ties in closely with the section above. Obviously, the more basic the cruise the cheaper the price. Keep in mind though,  Egyptian cruises  aren’t necessarily on par with those that we are used to in North America. Not that there is anything wrong with that (and some companies and big brands are) however, it is something to keep in mind so you don’t end up too surprised.

Remember pricing also will affect your inclusions. Things you will want to look for are meals, drinks, air conditioning, and guides. In terms of guides, you’ll find options that include a group guide for a large number of people or a private guide for just you and your party. It is definitely worth your while to have a private guide for your  Egypt guided tours .

That being said, Egypt Nile River cruises can be very affordable. In fact, depending on the type of cruise you do, an Egyptian Nile cruise might actually end up costing you less than if you were to visit all these sites and travel by land. Either way, one of the best things about adding a Nile cruise to your itinerary is that there truly are options for all budgets.

The Best Nile Cruise Ship Companies

When looking at Nile cruise options it can be easy to get overwhelmed with all the options, especially when it comes to Nile cruise ship companies.

Once you have the type of cruise you are looking for and an ideal budget in mind, you can start comparing companies. There are dozens of options, however, to make things a little easier we’ve selected some of the top picks for your consideration.

High-End Ships

High-end ships for Nile cruises really are top of the line and ideal for those looking into  Luxury tours in Egypt . The cabins are a good size and often decorated in a modern but elegant design. Many of these ships feature award-winning chefs and additional facilities such as an onboard fitness room, rooftop swimming pool, or even an onboard spa. Additionally, professional Egyptologist guides for all attractions and sites along the way are included in the price of your luxury Egypt tour. These ships differ in size but tend to have somewhere between 30-50 cabins on board.

Some examples of the top high-end ships for a luxury Nile River cruise include:

  • The Sanctuary Sun Boat
  • Sonesta Star Goddess
  • Terramar Nile Cruise
  • Oberoi Zahra
  • Oberoi Philae

Good Quality but More Affordable Ships

The above-mentioned ships are stunning, but, may not fit your budget. That’s ok though because there are still several beautiful ships that will offer you an incredible Nile Cruise experience for a more affordable price.

These ships are still tastefully decorated but may not be up to quite the same standard as those that are considered high-end. Meals on board tend to be buffet style rather than a la carte, and while some include additional features such as spas, pools, or fitness centers, they aren’t quite as common. As with all other Nile cruise ships, professional Egyptologists are included to guide you through the temples and sites that you will visit along the way.

Some of this good quality but more affordable ship options include the following:

  • Movenpick Royal Lily
  • Movenpick Royal Lotus
  • Amwaj Living Stone

Whatever you decide on in terms of your cruising style, you can bet that an Egyptian Nile cruise truly will be the highlight of your  Egypt luxury vacation .

Diverse Cruise Types: A Journey for Every Traveler

The Nile cruise experience is as varied as the landscapes it traverses. From long, luxurious voyages to short, immersive trips, there’s a journey for every type of traveler.

Long Egypt Nile Cruise: A Deep Dive into Egypt’s Heart

Certainly! Here’s the revised version with emphasis on “long cruise” to Long cruises along the Nile, extending from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan, are not merely voyages; they are an expansive exploration spanning 9 to 15 days, thoughtfully curated for history aficionados and culture enthusiasts. These long cruises are a profound journey through Egypt’s rich mosaic of history, culture, and awe-inspiring landscapes, offering a distinctive mix of relaxation and exploration.

What distinguishes these long cruises is their unparalleled access to both the globally acclaimed attractions like the magnificent Great Pyramids of Giza, the mysterious Sphinx, and the vast temple complexes of Luxor, as well as to the secluded treasures of ancient Egypt that elude the typical tourist itinerary. Among these hidden jewels are the Meidum Pyramid s, which shed light on the evolution of pyramid construction; the exquisite noble’s tombs in El Minya, offering insights into the lives of ancient Egyptian elites; and the ancient remnants of El Kab, echoing tales of past splendors.

egypt nile cruise tui

Furthermore, a long cruise on the Nile unveils the splendor of Abydos Temple , an essential archaeological site and ancient Egyptian pilgrimage destination, renowned for its detailed reliefs and as the mythological burial site of Osiris. Dendera, with its remarkably preserved temple dedicated to Hathor, the goddess of love and joy, features one of the most intact temple complexes in Egypt, adorned with vivid ceiling paintings that have endured through ages.

Opting for a long Nile cruise thus provides a unique opportunity to delve into these less-visited sites, offering a chance to venture beyond the conventional tourist path and immerse in the lesser-known aspects and sounds of ancient Egypt. This voyage is more than a simple tour; it’s an intimate exploration into the essence of Egypt, where each stop along the lush banks of the Nile unfolds a chapter in a millennia-spanning narrative, inviting travelers to discover the hidden marvels that await beyond the familiar facades of Egypt’s most famous landmarks.

Through this immersive experience, travelers not only witness the majestic sights but also gain a profound understanding of Egypt’s ancient civilization, its lasting impact, and the complex web of its cultural heritage, making long Nile cruises a matchless journey back in time.

Short Nile Cruises,

“Though termed ‘short’ in contrast to their longer counterparts, Aswan to Luxor cruises, or Luxor to Aswan Nile Cruises as well as the Nile Cruise Luxor to Aswan, represent the most popular and cherished form of Nile exploration among travelers to Egypt. Typically spanning three to seven nights, these journeys navigate the heart of ancient Egypt, effortlessly connecting Luxor and Aswan. They offer guests a unique opportunity to traverse the Nile in either direction, ensuring they witness the most iconic landmarks in both cities, along with the captivating sites nestled along the river’s path.”

A four-night voyage traditionally embarks on Mondays from Luxor, setting off on a journey rich with historical discovery, while a three-night journey commences on Fridays from Aswan, each itinerary carefully crafted to showcase the splendor of ancient civilizations that flourished along the Nile’s banks. For those wishing to immerse themselves further, a seven-night cruise option is available. This extended voyage can begin either in Luxor or Aswan, looping back to the starting point, and is designed for travelers seeking a more leisurely pace and in-depth exploration of the Nile’s treasures.

egypt nile cruise tui

These shorter Nile cruises are ideal for visitors who wish to balance the exploration of Egypt’s ancient marvels with the constraints of time, providing a condensed yet comprehensive experience of the Nile’s historical and cultural landscape. Whether embarking from Luxor or Aswan, travelers could delve into the heart of Egypt’s heritage, experiencing firsthand the awe-inspiring temples, tombs, and monuments that have captivated humanity for millennia.

Lake Nasser Cruise

Lake Nasser Cruises, akin to their Nile counterparts in duration, offer a unique voyage that is both concise and profoundly enriching. These cruises, navigating the vast expanse between Abu Simbel and Aswan, present an unparalleled opportunity to explore the serene beauty and monumental legacy of ancient Nubia.

Similar to the short Nile cruises, Lake Nasser cruises typically range from three to seven nights, tailored to fit the schedules of those seeking an adventure into the heart of ancient civilizations without the commitment of a lengthy journey. The experience is distinctly unique, focusing on the majestic Abu Simbel temples, a testament to the grandeur of Pharaonic architecture and engineering, and the tranquil waters of Lake Nasser, set against a backdrop of stark desert landscapes.

Whether embarking on a three-night journey or opting for a more extended seven-night exploration, travelers on Lake Nasser cruises are treated to a meticulously curated itinerary. This itinerary not only showcases the awe-inspiring temples of Abu Simbel, which were famously relocated to their current site as part of a massive UNESCO -led project, but also includes a selection of lesser-known archaeological sites and natural wonders along the lake’s shores, accessible only by boat.

Lake Nasser cruises offer a unique blend of relaxation, adventure, and historical exploration, providing an intimate glimpse into the ancient Nubian civilization and the modern feats of engineering that have preserved its legacy. For travelers intrigued by the mysteries of Egypt’s past and the enchanting beauty of its landscapes, a cruise on Lake Nasser is an unforgettable journey into the depths of history, set against the tranquil backdrop of one of the largest man-made lakes in the world.

Quality Matters: The 5-Star Experience

Opting for a 5-star cruise is crucial for a memorable holiday. These cruises ensure exceptional service, cleanliness, and comfort, elevating your Nile experience. They often include onboard amenities like spas, fine dining, and expert-guided tours, ensuring a luxurious journey.

Budget-Friendly Options: Cruising on a Dime

Cruises cater to various budgets, ranging from $90 to $1,500 per night, ensuring an experience that aligns with your financial preferences. Budget-friendly options don’t skimp on the experience, offering comfortable accommodations and access to stunning sights.

New vs. Experienced Crews: A Balance of Modernity and Expertise

While newer Nile cruises offer modern amenities, it’s important to consider the experience level of the staff, which could affect service quality. Experienced crews bring a depth of knowledge and cultural insight that can greatly enhance your journey.

The 8 Best Nile River Cruises (According To Real Reviews)

Most river cruises that you can book focus on the European rivers, such as the Danube and the Rhine. But there are some more unique options available, and cruising on the Nile is one of the most thrilling.

You’re almost guaranteed stunning weather, and you get to enjoy some of the world’s most fascinating history and culture.

Several Nile cruise ships moored side by side at a dock in the golden hour of the early evening. The ships are multi-decked with rows of windows and life rings, bustling with activity against a backdrop of the distant shoreline under a clear sky. This scene captures the vibrant atmosphere of river cruising in Egypt.

But which Nile cruises are the best? I’ve picked out eight of the best options so that you can pick the perfect one for you.

Nile River Cruises – Ranking Explained

I haven’t personally sailed on all eight of these river cruise lines, so if I were to rank them based purely on my opinion, it wouldn’t be useful information. Even if I had cruised on them all, my opinion is subjective, and everyone has different priorities for their cruises.

So, to make this ranking as fair as possible, I’ve instead used the review scores from Cruise Critic , an independent site that collates thousands of real passenger reviews.

Cruise Critic has two review scores for each cruise line – one from their experts and one that’s an average of customer review scores. I’ve ignored the experts’ score for the same reason I’m not using my own subjective opinions, and I’ve only used the customer review average.

Normally, when I write ranking lists, I also use TripAdvisor and Cruiseline.com to get a bigger average, but they aren’t great for river cruise lines. A lot of the cruise lines on this list aren’t included on those sites.

So, this is just Cruise Critic’s scores, but those at least are based on a wider base of real reviews from actual customers, and not just my own gut instincts.

The Best-Rated Nile River Cruises

1. avalon waterways.

The Avalon Farah, a modern river cruise ship by Avalon Waterways, sails calmly on the Nile. Its distinctive round windows and streamlined design give it a contemporary look. Passengers enjoy the view from the upper deck, taking in the serene river and lush palm trees lining the bank, reflecting the unique blend of luxury and exploration that river cruises offer.

  • Average Customer Score: 4.7/5
  • Average Nile Cruise Price: Approx. £300 per person, per night cruise-only
  • Children Allowed: 8 years+ only

Avalon Waterways has an excellent reputation for luxury touring. This isn’t just a river cruise – with Avalon Waterways you can expect fantastic packages that involve exciting sailings along with land tours to the best sights.

Guests love the onboard experience, with beautiful ships that offer really comfortable rooms and stunning food (often praised in reviews).

The cruise line isn’t cheap – you’ll pay a premium for the high standards of service and food onboard for your Nile cruise. But clearly, guests think that it’s worthwhile, based on that exceptional average review score.

There are two options for Nile river cruises. Both begin in Cairo and involve a flight to Luxor to then start the actual cruise to Aswan, before flying back to the Egyptian capital. This lasts 10 nights, with the option for a 4-night extension that includes a flight to Jordan and an exploration of Petra.

Throughout either itinerary, you can expect tours to give you as much time as possible to explore the sights, such as the Pyramids and the monument at Karnak, with expert guides bringing everything to life.

2. AmaWaterways

The AmaDahlia, AmaWaterways' luxury river cruise ship, navigates the historic Nile River. A traditional sailboat with a single white sail glides in the foreground, contrasting with the grandeur of the cruise ship. In the background, the rugged hills of Egypt's landscape and remnants of ancient structures blend the past and present, capturing the essence of cruising the Nile.

  • Average Customer Score: 4.6/5
  • Average Nile Cruise Price: £350-450 per person, per night cruise-only
  • Children Allowed: 4 years+ only

AmaWaterways has two river cruise ships offering Nile sailings – AmaDahlia and AmaLilia. This gives you a lot more flexibility on dates, letting you pick the perfect time of year to visit. Prices are lower during the summer months, often by as much as £1,000 per person.

This is another luxury cruise line and guests really do love the experience onboard – the food, in particular, is often praised, especially by those who’ve cruised on several different river cruise lines and can draw the comparison between them.

However, there are some comments that these two ships aren’t quite as luxurious as the rest of the fleet . Most guests still rave about their experience, but some people have said that the onboard experience felt a little more budget than European river cruises.

The itineraries for Nile cruises are all identical – 3 nights in Cairo, followed by a 7-night river cruise from Luxor and then one more night in Cairo. You can also add on an optional post-cruise tour of Jordan if you want to.

3. TUI River Cruises

A TUI River Cruise ship smoothly sails the Nile, captured in the soft light of the morning. The ship's white exterior with rows of windows reflects on the water, contrasting with the lush greenery and palm trees on the riverbank. The tranquil waters and clear skies create a serene and picturesque scene of river cruising in Egypt.

  • Average Nile Cruise Price: £240-285 per person, per night with flights included
  • Children Allowed: No

TUI River Cruises is aimed at the British cruise passenger, and so could be the perfect option for a Nile river cruise if you want to travel from the UK.

It’s not quite as luxurious a river cruise line as some competitors, but the value you get from the fares is amazing – expect to pay less than you would with other cruise lines, but also get your international airfare included, with regional flight options available.

That makes a huge difference, and TUI is the best option on this list if you’re on a budget, especially with the option to book without a deposit. You won’t get pre-cruise or post-cruise stays included by default but there’s always the option to add them on.

Admittedly, the number of reviews on CruiseCritic for TUI River Cruises might be working in the cruise line’s favour – there aren’t a huge number. But guests generally love the service, with the crew and the little extra touches being mentioned several times.

It’s probably best to avoid TUI if you want fine dining and the most luxurious accommodation, but for British-style cruising on a budget, it’s unrivalled.

A Scenic luxury river cruise ship glides on calm waters during a pastel-hued sunset. The ship's white and gold trimmings gleam, and the top deck with lounge chairs is invitingly visible. Gentle ripples in the water and the silhouette of palm trees on the distant shore complete this idyllic river cruising moment.

  • Average Customer Score: 4.4/5
  • Average Nile Cruise Price: £540-640 per person, per night with flights included
  • Children Allowed: 12 years+ only

Scenic offers some of the most opulent tour options for exploring Egypt, with prices that reflect that – though you do get a completely inclusive experience, with international airfare covered.

Scenic’s ships are all-suite affairs offering a truly five-star holiday, with Nile dates available throughout the autumn and winter months.

What makes Scenic’s Nile getaways stand out is the extensive nature of the itinerary. Each package is 14 nights long, including extended stays in Giza and Cairo around the actual Nile cruise. This extended time means you get more opportunities to see all of the incredible sights that Egypt has to offer at your own pace, with lots of free time mixed in with organised tours.

Scenic is a great choice if budget is no concern – but if you’re stretching to pay for it, you might be better looking at other options on the list.

The service, food and accommodation standards are very high and guests do appreciate them, but you can still have a great time on a cheaper alternative if you don’t need the finest standards.

5. Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

A Uniworld Boutique River Cruise ship serenely sails on the Nile at dawn, with the soft light of sunrise illuminating the desert mountains in the background. Hot air balloons float gracefully in the sky, adding a touch of adventure to the peaceful scene. The ship’s decks are lined with passengers likely taking in the majestic views, mirroring the tranquil and exploratory spirit of a river cruise in Egypt.

  • Average Customer Score: 4.3/5
  • Average Nile Cruise Price: £430-490 per person, per night cruise-only

Another cruise line that offers premium experiences, Uniworld’s cruises are very much aimed at those with a real passion for fine dining, decadent accommodations and refined service. While children are technically permitted from 4 years+, this really isn’t the cruise line for them.

The standard Nile cruise itinerary with Uniworld runs for 12 nights, including a pre-cruise stay in a luxury hotel in Cairo. There are also several options for tour extensions – similar to other cruise lines you can visit Jordan, but you can also add on a trip to Jerusalem if you prefer.

There’ll always be an experienced Egyptologist onboard your cruise, so these are great itineraries if you really are fascinated by the region and want to soak up as much knowledge as possible. Every day, you’ll get exciting tours to enjoy led by the experts too.

The guides get several mentions in the most positive reviews of Uniworld, praising their knowledge but also their approachability. An interesting negative comment mentioned a couple of times is that the itineraries cram too much in – so some destinations can feel a little rushed.

With two ships in the region, there are plenty of dates available for guests to choose from, though the cruises aren’t available from June to August.

6. APT Touring

The MS Sun Goddess, a multideck river cruise ship, majestically floats on the Nile River. Its sleek white structure with bold turquoise accents is marked by the sun emblem, symbolizing the vessel's name. Passengers can be seen enjoying the sundeck loungers, promising a relaxing journey with scenic river views and Egyptian hospitality.

  • Average Customer Score: 4.1/5
  • Average Nile Cruise Price: Approx. £500 per person, per night including London flights

APT Touring is a company that offers a fantastic range of experience packages, including many that incorporate river cruises.

There are two main reasons to consider APT Touring for a cruise along the Nile, and both are related to flexibility…

Firstly, you can choose between a traditional APT cruise that’s more luxurious, and includes a better class of service onboard (more meals, more complimentary drinks etc.) or you can opt for an APT Travelmarvel cruise, which is still great quality but doesn’t include quite as many meals onboard and fewer additional experiences too.

The second reason is the range of itinerary options, with packages lasting 12, 16 or 20 days depending on your preferences, visiting as many as 21 different destinations across 3 countries.

7. CroisiEurope

An aerial view of the CroisiEurope river cruise ship, elegantly cruising on the water with a well-appointed sundeck featuring a large swimming pool. The ship's long, white structure with neat rows of windows is crowned with a spacious open-air lounge area, offering guests a luxurious and relaxing voyage.

  • Average Nile Cruise Price: £180-200 per person, per night cruise only
  • Children Allowed: 5 years+ only

Looking to cruise the Nile on a restricted budget? CroisiEurope might be ideal. They offer the cheapest cruise fares starting at around £1,200 per person for a week, though that doesn’t include flights.

You still get all your meals included for that fare along with drinks during meals, and a host of excursions to see the sights too, such as local boat trips. The onboard experience is great too – expect local cuisine options and traditional Egyptian entertainment on several evenings.

Port-to-port options are available or you can choose longer packages that include pre-cruise stays in Cairo, though fares increase significantly for those.

One important thing to note is that, while CroisiEurope is generally an excellent river cruise line for families in Europe , offerings for children are a little more limited on Nile sailings. You won’t get free child places like you would on the Rhine or Danube but you can get discounts, and an extra bed can be added to your cabin.

Guest reviews are very positive on the overall CroisiEurope experience, but some guests who’ve cruised on several cruise lines say they can notice the difference in food quality and luxury levels, with CroisiEurope not being quite as good as more expensive rivals.

8. Riviera Travel

The Riviera Travel river cruise ship is captured mid-voyage on the Nile, its blue and white exterior crisp against the backdrop of the Egyptian landscape. Passengers on the upper deck appear to be enjoying the panoramic views, with the rural shoreline and palm trees providing a tranquil setting for their journey.

  • Average Customer Score: 4.0/5
  • Average Nile Cruise Price: £350-370 per person, per night including London flights

Riviera Travel is the second cruise line on this list that is more catered to British travellers, and you could consider it a more luxurious competitor to TUI River Cruises, albeit with higher cruise fares to match.

However, some of the cruise reviews say it isn’t quite the 5* experience, which is why it’s bottom of this list (though still with a respectable average of 4 out of 5).

The ship is definitely comfortable, modern and attractive but the food is a little bit of a letdown to some guests who were expecting fine dining.  Drinks packages are available for an extra charge.

The company offers two different Egypt river cruise options – either 10 days or 14 days – both of which include a stay in Cairo and return flights from London.

The best way to book a river cruise

Want expert help to plan your perfect cruise?

Whether you want to enjoy only a cruise between Luxor and Aswan along the Nile, or you prefer a more complete tour that includes pre- or post-cruise stays in Cairo and even more potential options in the region, those are the best options available.

Some may be out of your budget, or you might have a particular preference for the more luxurious cruise lines. The key point is that they are all excellent options – even the lowest average score of 4 out of 5 is still an overwhelmingly positive review score.

So if only one of these cruise lines fits in your price range and has the dates you want, you can be confident you’ll still have a fantastic Nile river cruise.

Things to know about River Nile Cruises All Inclusive

What is the best month for a nile cruise.

The best time for a Nile cruise depends on your preferences and what you want to experience during your journey. However, many travelers find that the optimal months for a Nile cruise are between October and April. During this period, the weather is generally mild, and the temperatures are more comfortable for exploring both on and off the boat. You can expect pleasant daytime temperatures ranging from 70°F to 85°F (21°C to 29°C), making it ideal for sightseeing and enjoying outdoor activities. Additionally, the Nile’s water levels are typically higher during these months, ensuring smooth sailing and access to a wider range of destinations along the river. These months are also a great time for birdwatching, as migratory birds flock to the Nile Delta.

What is the average cost of a Nile River cruise?

The cost of a Nile River cruise can vary significantly based on several factors. The standard price range for a mid-range cruise can be approximately $1,000 to $3,000 per person for a 4-7 day cruise. Luxury cruises can cost significantly more, ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 or even higher per person. The price depends on factors such as the cruise duration, the type of cabin or suite you choose, the cruise line, the time of year, and the level of luxury you desire. It’s worth noting that some cruises may include excursions, while others may charge extra for them. Additionally, be prepared for additional expenses for tips and alcoholic beverages. However, the memories and experiences you gain from a Nile cruise are usually considered well worth the investment.

Is a Nile cruise worth it?

Absolutely, a Nile cruise is undoubtedly worth the experience. It’s a unique and fascinating way to explore one of the world’s most historically significant and culturally rich regions. You’ll get to witness ancient temples, archaeological sites, and modern Egyptian life all from the comfort of a cruise ship. The convenience of unpacking only once while visiting multiple historical sites along the river is unparalleled. The Nile River has been the lifeblood of Egypt for centuries, and its banks are dotted with numerous historical wonders, including Luxor, Aswan, and the Valley of the Kings. Moreover, the luxury and service on many Nile cruises are exceptional. While it can be a significant financial investment, the memories and knowledge gained are priceless.

Are drinks expensive on a Nile cruise?

Drinks on a Nile cruise can vary in cost depending on the cruise line and the level of luxury you choose. In general, drinks can be relatively expensive, particularly when compared to prices in local establishments. The prices for alcoholic beverages like cocktails, wine, and beer on a Nile cruise may be comparable to those in upscale restaurants or hotels. Non-alcoholic drinks like water, soda, and juices are more reasonably priced. To save on costs, some travelers opt for all-inclusive packages that cover drinks or purchase drink packages at the beginning of the cruise. It’s essential to review the beverage pricing structure and options offered by your chosen cruise to budget accordingly.

Why are Nile Cruises so expensive?

Nile cruises often come with a higher price tag due to several factors. Firstly, maintaining and operating cruise ships on the Nile requires considerable investment in maintenance, crew salaries, and amenities. Additionally, the historical and cultural significance of the destinations along the Nile River adds to the cost. Visiting ancient temples and archaeological sites often involves fees contributing to the overall expense. Luxury cruises, in particular, provide top-notch service, gourmet dining, and a range of amenities, which naturally come at a higher cost. Moreover, the exclusivity and unique experiences Nile Cruises offers, such as personalized guided tours and the opportunity to witness iconic sights, contribute to the higher prices. While Nile cruises can be expensive, they offer a once-in-a-lifetime chance to explore ancient Egypt in comfort and style.

Is food included on a Nile cruise?

Food options on a Nile cruise can vary depending on the cruise line and package you choose. Many Nile cruises offer full board, which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner as part of the package. These meals are often served buffet-style or à la carte, depending on the cruise. The quality and variety of the cuisine can vary, but luxury cruises generally provide gourmet dining experiences, while mid-range options offer good-quality meals. Some cruise lines also offer special themed dinners and local cuisine to enhance your culinary experience. Snacks and light refreshments may be available between meals, but you should check with your chosen cruise line to understand the specifics of their meal offerings.

Do you see pyramids on a Nile cruise?

A Nile cruise typically does not take you directly to the pyramids at Giza, as these iconic landmarks are located near Cairo, which is quite a distance from the main cruise route along the Nile. However, many cruise itineraries do include pre- or post-cruise options to visit the pyramids and other attractions in Cairo. These side trips typically involve a flight or a long bus ride to reach the Giza Plateau. Nevertheless, the journey itself along the Nile offers incredible views of the Egyptian countryside, ancient temples, and unique cultural experiences. If seeing the pyramids is a priority, it’s worth considering a Nile cruise package that includes this excursion or extending your stay in Egypt to explore them separately.

How many days do you need on a Nile cruise?

The ideal duration for a Nile cruise can vary depending on your interests and the specific sites you want to explore. A standard Nile cruise typically ranges from 3 to 7 days, with the most common duration being around 7 days. This provides a good balance of time to visit major historical sites such as Luxor, Aswan, and the Valley of the Kings while also allowing for relaxation and enjoying the amenities on board. A 7-day cruise usually covers the main highlights, but if you have specific places you want to visit or prefer a shorter or longer cruise, options are available to suit your preferences. A 3-4 day cruise is a quick introduction to the Nile’s wonders, while longer cruises give you more in-depth exploration and relaxation time.

Where is the best place to start a cruise on the Nile?

The two most common embarkation points for Nile cruises are Luxor and Aswan. The choice of where to start your cruise depends on your itinerary and the sites you want to explore. Luxor, often called the “world’s greatest open-air museum,” is a fantastic place to start your cruise. It allows you to explore iconic sites like the Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, and the Valley of the Kings. Aswan is another popular starting point, known for its serene beauty and places like the Philae Temple and the High Dam. Some travelers start in Aswan and sail north to Luxor, while others opt for the reverse route. The choice largely depends on your personal preferences and the specific itinerary offered by the cruise line. Luxor and Aswan have airports with good connections to other parts of Egypt, making it convenient to begin your Nile adventure from either location.
