Why It’s Worth Visiting Texas Hill Country for Wine Tasting

From finely-tuned Tempranillo, crisp Viognier to beautiful Rhone-style red blends , Texas Hill Country Wineries are not only situated around beautiful scenery, but the wines they’re producing are only beginning to gain worldwide recognition. That’s because the majority of Texas Hill Country vineyards only sell their wines within Texas – otherwise, the Texas wine bug would have gone viral long ago.

That’s why I’m aiming to expose this juice. The Texas Hill Country was largely overlooked until the past few years. (It wasn’t until the early 1990s that much of anything was produced here).

But did you know that now the Texas Hill Country AVA is the third-largest AVA in the U.S. ? At over 9,000,000 acres, and with a climate and terroir not unlike Rioja, Spain or Southern Rhone, France, skilled vintners are discovering the potential to produce world-class wine within the soil of this unique location.

Navigating The Texas Hill Country Wine Trail on Wine Road 290

Today we’re going to take a look at a stretch of road that leads through the picturesque region of Fredericksburg, Texas. That stretch of road is aptly named Wine Road 290 . The whole area is unique in that many of the vineyards and wineries are a part of the Fredericksburg Wine Road 290 Association. Thus, what benefits one winery typically benefits another, as many are located right next to each other. This makes a day trip to the region incredibly convenient.

How many wineries should I visit?

That depends on the tolerance of your group. Things to keep in consideration:

  • If you’re drinking and driving – don’t overdo it. Consider hiring a driver or   jumping on a shuttle from Austin
  • Begin your day in the late morning on a full stomach — by 11 AM most wineries are open
  • Plan your Texas Hill Country wine tour for a weekday — fewer crowds

Below, we’ll highlight 10 of our favorite Texas Hill Country Wineries. Starting in Stonewall, we’ve put together the perfect itinerary of wineries to visit that any wine enthusiast or group can enjoy without breaking the bank.

Best Texas Hill Country Wineries

Only about one hour and 30 minutes northwest of downtown Austin, Wine Road 290 in Fredericksburg can be easily accessed by hopping on Mopac (TX-1), and then merging onto US 290 – West.

Did you know Texas Hill Country is an up-and-coming Viognier growing area? Elevated, sunny, windswept, limestone hillsides provide ideal growing conditions for stubborn grapes like Viognier. Some Vintners here have really begun to fine-tune their craft and produce refreshing white wines. While the whites are great, my favorite red in all of Hill Country came from Pedernales.

Pedernales Cellars makes for a great first stop for a wine tour in Fredericksburg because it will leave an impression on you. This is an award-winning winery, with a beautiful patio that offers 360-degree views of the surrounding hill country. You’ll often encounter live music at the winery, adding a bit of an Austin-esque feel to this remote and flavor-prone property.

Don’t be shy to roam around the estate! Grapes are sourced from multiple vineyards within the region, and as I mentioned above, their GSM red blend is my favorite red wine thus far in all of Texas Hill Country. Tastings do not need to be scheduled in advance.

2916 Upper Albert Road, Stonewall, Texas

Perissos Vineyard and Winery

For a European-vibe right here in Texas, consider a visit to the lovely property at Perissos. Winetravelers frequently rave about the warmth and southern hospitality of the staff at this winery. In addition, the atmosphere is one of our favorites in the region. This is a beautiful destination if you’re looking to have a relaxing afternoon by the vines, enjoy a bottle of wine and nibble on some cheese and charcuterie. Live music is also common here. Wine tastings do not require a reservation and are $18 per person. Tours are also available for $40 per person.

Becker is a bit more mainstream (now producing around 1.3 million bottles annually) and has a few other… attractions associated with the property. If you time your visit in either May or June, there’s a good shot you’ll get to see a sweeping lavender field not far from the tasting room. They also have extensive fields of wildflowers if you time your visit right.

The beginning of summer is also peak season so it can get somewhat crowded. Try to plan your visit during the week. Check out a virtual tour of the Becker tasting room and property. On-site tours typically run every 30 minutes on weekends.

If you’re looking to stay in wine country a little bit longer, Becker has a Bed & Breakfast adjacent to the property for around $125 per night.

464 Becker Farms Rd, Fredericksburg, Texas

(830) 644-2681

Sister Creek Vineyards

This homey, cute and welcoming location is actually a winery that was converted from a cotton gin. Sister Creek in Texas Hill Country is best known for its friendly staff, great tasting wines and unique atmosphere.

Plus, they’re not overpriced. You’ll be satisfied with your tasting experience, and definitely ask about getting a winery tour — they’re free.

This award-winning winery offers two kinds of tastings at two low prices, and their wine styles focus on European blends. Plus, they’re open most days of the year.

1142 Sisterdale Rd, Boerne, Texas

(830) 324-6704

If you’re looking to merge a wine tasting experience with a meal, Silver Dollar is well worth a stop on the western side of Hill Country. From build-your-own-pizzas, chicken wings to street tacos, relax in a hammock chair and sip and swirl amongst the vines. Try pairing a pizza with the Peace Maker Merlot, you won’t be disappointed. This is a true destination for Texas food, wine and hospitality. There’s a good chance you’ll also get to enjoy a visit with the owner.

8264 US-290, Johnson City, Texas

(830) 308-7750

Grape Creek Winery is an Italian-styled winery located on a beautiful property. If you’re following along with this itinerary, this will likely be your last stop for the day.

Be confident in your decision – Grape Creek Vineyards has snatched up over 100 medals over the years with their wines. Done up in a Tuscan-themed architectural style, the buildings on the property are primarily made of stone with classic red roofs. Prices vary depending on when you visit. Weekday tastings are $12, while Saturdays and holidays are $15.

Try the Bellissimo and the Cabernet & Syrah blend.

Some of our staff recently visited Fall Creek and had an incredible time! Staff Writer Jacqueline Coleman explains what you can expect:

“On an average warm, sunny Hill Country day, you will find guests sitting all around the garden-style property in Driftwood, just outside of Austin, sipping on Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay , or perhaps a Tempranillo. The tasting room inside has a homely comfort about it, complete with a fireplace and TV for football-watching. This is Texas, after all, and football is king, so it only makes sense that a winery owned by two University of Texas alums would have a TV for Saturday games.

Out on the back porch of the charming country house-converted-into-winery, tables are spaced out for groups to sit and wait for a table-side tasting, which has been the program since the beginning for tastings at Fall Creek Vineyards’ Driftwood location. Guests can sit and order wine from the tasting list, which is then brought to them as they enjoy the scenery of the Texas Hill Country landscape around the property from the comfort of their seats on the porch.”

18059 Farm to Market Rd 1826, Driftwood, Texas

(512) 858-4050

True innovators in the Texas wine industry, William “Bill” Blackmon and Chris Brundrett created William Chris Vineyards in 2008. Since that time, it’s exploded in popularity. Not just within Texas Hill Country, but around the United States as well. Chris and Bill focus on minimal impact viticulture that creates high-impact wine. Their property offers a gorgeous tasting room and relaxing outdoor setting, with live music on Sunday. Chris Brundrett was just recognized as one Wine Enthusiast’s “Producers That are Redefining American Wine”

10352, US-290, Hye, Texas

(830) 998-7654

For a somewhat removed and boutique experienced in the northeastern corner of Hill Country, definitely consider a stop by Spicewood Vineyards. This charming vineyard atmosphere will appease those who want to kick back and relax on a patio for the afternoon. Be sure to try their Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo and Syrah alongside their cheeseboard. This is also a pet-friendly and kid-friendly winery, so don’t be shy to bring along the family. It’s also a frequently talked-up wedding venue.

1419 Co Rd 409, Spicewood, Texas

(830) 693-5328

Duchman Family Winery: Add Either a First or Last Stop

Depending on where you leave from in Austin, if you have a little extra time or would rather split your Hill Country wine experience between both Fredericksburg and Driftwood (about 30 minutes Southeast of Fredericksburg), head on downtown Duchman Family Winery to enjoy their beautiful stone tasting room and very friendly staff. The Duchman property is beautiful, but this winery also has an Italian restaurant conveniently located next to the tasting room.

The majority of wine produced at Duchman is Italian and the tastings are by far the most affordable in the area. Try the Aglianico , our favorite on the menu!

13308 Ranch to Market Rd 150, Driftwood, Texas

Arguably, you left the BEST Texas Winery off this list. I sorta see why – you limited yourself to the touristy 290 region – and I guess for purposes of this article, I guess that’s understandable. But the BEST Texas Winery is just north of 290 off Park Road 4 outside of Burnet – Perissos Vineyard and Winery has by far the best wines in Texas. They are like most Texas wineries, you have to go there to get the wine!!! {PS: You can blame THAT on the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission!!}. Salud!!!

If you’ve tried a Texas wine or two over the years and found them lacking or nondescript, what you find in tasting rooms today might just shock you. The past five years have seen Hill Country wineries adapt to and trust in the terroir , resulting in a new benchmark of quality. In the 2000s, Texas winemakers were largely chasing California to little benefit, often planting popular grapes at the expense of quality. Prescient winemakers and grape growers who experimented with plantings during that time found that grapes from the Rhone (roussanne, syrah, viognier, mourvedre), Spain (tempranillo), and Italy (vermentino, sangiovese) were far more suited to the Central Texas climate. Today, these seven grapes appear often in local tasting rooms , along with those from Portugal and some holdovers from Bordeaux. Due to limited supply, many of these wines are done as multi-varietal blends.

best wineries to visit in texas hill country

When visiting Hill Country wineries today, one thing is constant: crowds. Tourism numbers are approaching 1.75 million visitors per year , making tasting room sales a large part of local winery business plans — and leading to some gaudy tourist traps along the main thoroughfares. With 5,000 acres planted and nearly 400 wineries, Texas is now the fifth-largest wine producer in the United States. This has many secondary effects: Airbnbs in Fredericksburg and the Hill Country are booming, and a handful of wineries now offer cottages or tiny houses to stay at on-site. The tasting rooms themselves have also evolved from functional to fashionable, with most wineries taking advantage of beautiful outdoor spaces both for the views, and due to COVID-19. On recent visits, most bottles were priced in the $25 to $50 range, with a handful skewing higher. Due to both scarcity and popularity, many of the most-trafficked wineries like William Chris and Lewis reserve certain wines and tasting room benefits for members of their subscription wine clubs.

Texas grapes are expensive, and extreme weather events have made yields unpredictable, so some wineries have supplemented their Texas grapes with those from the Southwest or the West Coast, sometimes fueling ire in others who did not. As of September, a new labeling law took effect requiring that all Texas wine using an American Viticultural Area designation, vineyard name, or county must entirely comprise Texas grapes, while those using the generic “Texas” on their labels may still supplement using grapes from out of state. For those curious about recent vintages, the 2017 selections currently available in tasting rooms represent a high-water mark for quality — try them when you find them. Also expect 2018 and 2019 vintages to stick around for a longer stretch, as those were good weather years that resulted in high yields.

Tips for a Hill Country Wine Excursion

As with all food and drink travel, knowing what to expect can improve the experience. Here are several things to keep in mind before your next visit to Central Texas wine country.

  • Plan ahead. There’s really no wrong time to visit Texas’s Hill Country , but spring and fall — when the weather is relatively mild — tend to attract the most people to the region. Hours vary by season, so call or check websites for up-to-date hours before visiting. For planning purposes, three wineries is probably the ideal number to visit in one day. Also note that many wineries, restaurants, and shops plan around the peak tourism days of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Many food and wine options are closed on Monday and Tuesday. Due to the weather, many wineries run out of their white wines later in the summer.
  • Bring a picnic. While many wineries offer snacks like potato chips, cheese, and bread, there are stretches without any substantive food options. Pack a picnic lunch and avoid feeling hungry and frustrated.
  • Make appointments. On weekends with pleasant weather, and during wedding seasons (spring and fall), wineries’ tasting rooms can easily reach capacity. Making advance appointments is a must for spring and fall visits. Also note that some tasting rooms do not allow large groups or buses. COVID-19 may also limit some venue capacities this fall.
  • Ask questions. The winery staff wants to tell you about what you’re drinking. Let them guide you.
  • Know about minimum purchase requirements. At wineries, tasting-flight fees are sometimes refunded with a minimum purchase. Ask about this if you decide to buy some bottles.
  • Hydrate. Drink plenty of water before, during, and after tastings, especially if visiting several wineries.
  • Designate a driver, and consider staying somewhere nearby. The Texas wine industry is spread out , and the driving times can be extensive. If you aren’t hiring a driver, designate one from your party (and buy them a bottle or two of your tasting favorites for home consumption). Alternatively, wineries like Messina Hof and French Connection offer overnight and weekend rentals.

Where to Drink

With hundreds of Texas wineries to choose from ( especially along Texas Wine Road 290 ), it’s no longer necessary to create a comprehensive list of destinations. The following is j ust a taste of wineries Eater has visited and wines editors and contributors have sampled over the past two years — the very best of what Texas grapes can do in wine form.

As the coronavirus pandemic is still ongoing , please follow the wineries’ masking and social distancing guidance. Where possible, opt for outdoor tastings

Ron Yates Wines

This tasting room is one of the first you encounter on the Johnson City to Fredericksburg corridor , and it’s also a perfect bellwether for Texas wine. More than 20 wines are available to taste by the glass and in flights, with everything from grenache rosé to single-vineyard sangiovese on offer. Lewis Wines

A pleasant stop near Johnson City, Lewis Wines , which uses estate grapes from vines planted in 2014, has a loyal following for its multiple Texas rosés and its delightful, slightly fizzy white Swim Spot. The outdoor tasting room is spacious and can accommodate larger groups, and the winery often hosts fun weekend events like paella and flamenco performances or rosé and poke. Overall, a great introduction to Hill Country wine. Hours : 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday Prices : $25 per tasting Wines to try : Hill Country Rosé, Round Mountain Rosé, Swim Spot Address : 3209 Hwy. 290 West, Johnson City How to book : Reservations

One of the newer Hill Country entrants, Ab Astris planted 12 acres of grapes in varieties less known to U.S. vintners like tannat, souzao, and clairette blanche on its estate vineyard in 2018. They also source from well-known vineyards like Newsom and Reddy. The light, airy tasting room feels modern, and the winery showed particular skill with their white wines. At present, most tastings are conducted on the covered outdoor patio due to COVID-19. Adega Vinho

This Stonewall winery is new and slightly off the main Texas wine trail . The large tasting room evokes a casual hangout, with retro couches, mirrors, and wood paneling providing a welcoming tasting space. While the winery will eventually focus on Portuguese grapes, the current lineup includes both Rhone and Spanish varietals. The staff is amiable and knowledgeable. It’s a fun and relaxing stop on any itinerary. Recent vintages are showing a slightly lighter (if still New World) house style, with a nice balance between fruit and acidity. Reserved seated tastings and private tours are available, as are cheese plates if you order ahead. Duchman Family Winery

Perhaps the easiest win for an Austin day trip and (quite conveniently) near tourist barbecue mainstay the Salt Lick , Duchman Family Winery is a potent one-two punch for out-of-town guests. Opening times are generous. There’s a large lawn with picnic and yard game areas for outdoor sipping. Bottle prices are reasonable — especially when considering the winery sources 100 percent Texas grapes — and there’s a broad selection available. Reservations are currently required Friday through Sunday due to COVID capacity , while walk-ins are accepted Monday through Thursday. Hours : Noon to 6 p.m. Monday; noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; noon to 8 p.m. Friday through Saturday; noon to 7 p.m. Sunday Prices : $15 per tasting flight Wines to try : vermentino, aglianico, Reddy Vineyard Sangiovese Address : 13308 Farm to Market 150 West, Driftwood How to book : Reservations

Lost Draw Cellars

Conveniently located in downtown Fredericksburg, this is a great stop for those spending a weekend in town. The rustic, relaxed patio space is great for those looking for less pomp and circumstance, and the wines are consistently well-made and enjoyable. There are both regular tastings and food and wine pairings available, and the winery hosts live music most long weekends. Hours : 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Saturday Prices : $20 to $35 per tasting Wines to try : High Plains Mourvedre, Moonlight Roussanne Address : 113 E. Sandy Road Vineyards

A small but impressive newcomer, Sandy Road is located several miles up Ranch Road 1320 — you’ll have to go looking for them as there’s no signage. From an elegant and nuanced roussanne to the perfect sangiovese pizza companion, the wines here from Ron Yates associate winemaker Reagan Sivadon are pretty special. Opt for a VIP-style treehouse tasting overlooking the vineyards (reservations required), or simply walk in on weekends for a tasting in the just-completed pavilion. Hours : 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Saturday; noon to 5 p.m. Sunday Prices : $20 to $41 per tasting Wines to try : sangiovese, mourvedre, roussanne Address : 3932 Ranch Rd. 1320, Johnson City How to book : Reservations

William Chris Vineyards

Perhaps the best-known of the newer crop of Hill Country wineries , William Chris has developed a huge wine club following using 100 percent Texas-grown grapes, Old World farming techniques, and a focus on fruits best suited to the state’s terroir. The winery pours a notable mourvedre, and is the leading producer of that varietal in Texas. The tasting room is packed with members on weekends when live music is often featured, so book ahead. Hours : 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday Prices : $20 to $75 per tasting; food pairings are available Wines to try : La Pradera Roussanne, La Pradera Grenache Address : 10352 Hwy. 290, Hye How to book : Reservations

French Connection Wines

A Rhone-focused winery from winemaker Benjamin Calais, French Connection has already found a strong following among Hill Country wine fans. Standout wines include an approachable roussanne and the crisp, chillable red Côtes de Hye. Also here are more esoteric offerings like a four-year barrel-aged Reserve roussanne. There’s a long, generous tasting porch here with pretty Hill Country views and a staff excited to educate and entertain. There are also three “maisonnettes” available to book for overnight stays. Hours : Noon to 6 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday Prices : $22 to $45 per tasting Wines to try : La Connection (a rosé and white blend), Côtes de Hye Address : 1197 Hye-Albert Rd., Hye How to book : Reservations

Wedding Oak Winery

Wedding Oak is named for a 400-year-old oak tree near the winery. While the main tasting room location is in San Saba , most Austinites will opt for the second location in Fredericksburg , which offers a quiet, spacious tasting room with attentive service. The winery sources fruit from both the Texas Hill Country and Texas High Plains, with a wide selection of styles. Italian varietals are among the standouts on the tasting room menu. Hours : 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday Prices : $15 to $20 per tasting Wines to try : Primitivo, Montepulciano Address : 6009B Hwy. 290 East, Fredericksburg How to book : Reservations

Fall Creek Vineyards

Fall Creek ’s offerings represent the work of Texas wine’s elder statesman : Fall Creek’s first vineyard was planted in 1975, and its Tow winery opened in 1983. In 2013, the winery brought in Chilean winemaker Sergio Cuadra to transition to a higher level of quality, and recent vintages have reflected great results from his involvement. The Driftwood tasting room offers a selection of light bites such as cheese platters and charcuterie boards to accompany tastings. Hours : 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday Prices : $20 per tasting Wines to try : sangiovese, Salt Lick Tempranillo Address : 18059-A Farm to Market Rd. 1826, Driftwood How to book : Reservations

Slate Mill Wine Collective

While this “many producers under one roof” project is still in an early stage, it’s worth checking in on. A combination production facility and tasting room, you’ll find winemaker Rae Wilson’s innovative Wine for the People selections here, along with highly regarded offerings from Josh Fritsche under both the 1851 and Tatum labels. Wines from the upcoming Slate Theory Winery at this location will join the lineup at some point this fall. Hours : 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; noon to 6 p.m. Sunday through Monday Prices : $20 to $30 per tasting Wines to try : Dandy Rosé, Grower Project (various varietals), Tatum Mourvedre Address : 4222 Hwy. 16 South, Fredericksburg How to Book : Reservations

Southold Farm + Cellar

A smart stop for natural wine fans, New York transplant Southold Farm + Cellar has gotten the attention of wine hipsters with unconventional blends, smart graphic design, and a noninterventionist philosophy. Earlier this year, the winery added a seasonal prix fixe restaurant, the Kitchen at Southold Farm + Cellar , with dishes like gnocchi, smoked eggplant with naan, and gazpacho. Wine pairings are available at the restaurant, as are a la carte drinks. Reservations are required for all tastings and meals, so book ahead. Hours : 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday through Monday Prices : $25 to $40 per tasting Wines to try : Grand Gestures Viognier, Don’t Forget To Soar White Blend Address : 330 Minor Threat Ln., Fredericksburg How to book : Reservations for September , reservations for October through November

The Pioneers

Becker vineyards.

Founded 1995 | Fredericksburg

After Dr. Richard and “Bunny” Becker found the perfect log cabin retreat away from their San Antonio home, they had to decide what to do with the land. They were inspired by travels in the lavender fields of Southern France, whose terrain and climate reminded them of Texas Hill Country. Richard became one of the pioneers of Texas wine, starting with varietals he enjoyed and researching what grows here. For 25 years, the winery has grown estate sauvignon blanc, semillon, grenache, malbec, merlot, petite syrah, syrah, cabernet franc, and cabernet sauvignon. Becker was the first Texas winery to produce viognier, now one of the state’s signature whites. Careful cooperage emphasizing tight wood grain for softer tannins, unlike the French Limousin region’s looser-grain barrels, helps balance oak and fruit. Stand on the stone porch, and catch the scent of lavender carried by the east-west cross breeze that cools the vines.

Spicewood Vineyards and Ron Yates Wines

Founded 2007 and 2016 |  Spicewood

Tempranillo was Ron Yates’ muse. The shorts- and sandal-clad vintner, who wakeboarded and water-skied on Lady Bird Lake and went to law school at St. Mary’s University before starting a record label, fell in love with the grape on a trip to Spain in the late ’90s. But the vineyard he ended up buying turned out to be uncannily suited to the sauvignon blanc with which it was already planted—and with which he immediately began to win awards. Try the 2017 vintage, crisp and classic, with the racy minerality you’d find in a Sancerre. Spicewood Vineyards, off the beaten path at the end of a country road, is estate-focused. But for his new eponymous Ron Yates winery and tasting room 35 miles to the southwest, Yates sources grapes from all over the state, based on close relationships with growers. Todd Crowell, the winemaker at both, modulates style. Think an expressive tempranillo for Spicewood—smoky, leathery, laden with brambly fruit—while the style is elegant and unusually reserved at Ron Yates, more cool blueberry with additional time in French oak. Yates recently released two frisky pétillant naturels, all effervescence and fun. Come May, you’ll want to return for a paella in Spicewood’s vineyard.

The Geologists

Kuhlman cellars.

Founded 2010 (Opened to public 2014) | Stonewall

The thing to do here is to take in the view of the rolling hills and enjoy a bottle of rosé accompanied by Marcona almonds dusted with herbes de Provence, which the winemaker’s mother sent from France. Bénédicte Rhyne, the Burgundy-trained winemaker, has worked to make rosés in the style of Provence’s lean, strawberry-scented rosés. She produces dainty, taut Southern Rhône Valley rosés with vibrancy and depth, whether crisp and light or refreshing and effervescent. Wines have names like Alluvé and Gypsum, which draw attention to terroir and soil types, and Hensell, which is named after the pink sandstone that underlies Gillespie County’s aquifer. Owners Chris and Jennifer Cobb began in 2010 with an experimental vineyard on a farm they bought near Fredericksburg, a mere 11 acres with varietals planted one per row to see how they grew.

The Minimalist

Crowson wines.

Founded 2018 | Johnson City

best wineries to visit in texas hill country

In his tiny tasting room, Henry Crowson is making low-intervention, “natural” wine—unfiltered and unrefined, with a light touch. It’s not wild, though the yeasts are. The young winemaker, who worked at William Chris and helped found a whiskey distillery, adheres to a philosophy of minimalism, capturing the energy of place through the yeasts that come in from the vineyard (one of the defining precepts of naturally fermented wine). “It excites me that whatever yeast is there was meant to be there,” he says. He makes a gorgeous malvasia bianca and a funky, skin-contact roussanne in amber or orange hues. He channels his love of experimentation into a full-bodied zinfandel made with the French technique of carbonic maceration that yields Beaujolais. Sometimes his choices for his diverse repertoire come from a sense of place, in terms of what will grow well here, and sometimes they come from sense of style, playing with method. What will define Texas wine, he hopes, is variety born of diversity of terroir.

The Chemist

Bending branch winery.

Founded 2009 | Comfort

Bending Branch is synonymous with tannat. Owner Robert W. Young became enamored of the Basque grape and its potential. He wanted more color extraction and thought it could be done. With his chemistry background and enology-school experience, he figured out how. At his winery in Comfort, he uses modern techniques like cryomaceration (a freezing method that increases tannins and color compound extraction), flash détente (tannin-releasing heating), and whole-cluster fermentation to yield deep, inky tannats and an estate cabernet whose smokiness pairs well with brisket. Also noteworthy are a crisp, melony, award-winning picpoul blanc and a new tannat rosé made frizzante style, which playfully expresses the grape’s range. For tannat nerds: the 2017 Texas Tannat blends three Texas vineyards and three fermentation styles for a dark, lush, velvety wine.

The High Plains Drifter

Lost draw cellars.

Founded 2009 | Fredericksburg

It may hold a vintage Gulf gas pump in the corner, but aside from the legacy oil-and-gas in-law connection that allowed them to land a tasting room in Fredericksburg, Lost Draw is all about moving forward. In its bag of tricks is Andy Timmons, who was awarded the T.V. Munson award, named after one of Texas’ great grape figures, and is one of the most influential growers in the High Plains. He works with his nephew, winemaker Andrew Sides, a Texas Tech graduate who is making some of the best wine in the state. Aside from growing for others, their portfolio includes exceptional whites—albariño, roussanne, marsanne, viognier, picpoul blanc, and the proprietary Arroyo Blanco blend—in addition to malbec and tannat. Look for the popular Spritztown, a play on Fredericksburg’s nickname, and counoise rosé and red, which highlight an unusual Rhône grape for single-varietal wines.

The Long Island Transplants

Southold farm + cellar.

Founded 2012 ( Refounded 2016) | Fredericksburg

At the top of a hill, behind their modern home ( pictured ), is the tasting room modeled on a farmhouse that Regan and Carey Meador left behind in Long Island when they returned to Regan’s native Texas in 2016. An arrow marked “wine study” points from the bottom of the slope up to the white farmhouse. It is outfitted with Edison light bulbs and has views across valleys to both the north and south. The couple wanted to continue to make their Southold Farm + Cellar wine, but they knew they’d have to figure out all new grape sources. Yet you’ll find one last vintage from Long Island, Suitably Stunning, a Champagne-style sparkling rosé. Regan is joined in winemaking by Adrienne Ballou, and theirs is of the low-intervention variety, responding to the grapes and the process. Carefully sourced Hill Country fruit undergirds the wines now, but rootstock will be grafted in the spring. Whimsical names like Little Pieces of a Big Soul, made from touriga nacional, or Sing Sweet Things, an albariño, underscore the fact that time and place conspire to make every bottle different. Choose one, and settle into a swing on the back porch.

The Perfectionists

Duchman family winery.

Founded 2004 |  Driftwood

Many, myself included, consider Duchman vermentino and monte-pulciano to be wines that changed their view of Texas winemaking. Duchman entered the stage in 2004 with sophisticated wines from Italian varietals, which we would begin to see as common parlance, though they were not household names before. They became synonymous with excellence. In the hands of winemaker Dave Reilly, Duchman’s wines brilliantly showcase the varietals, whether the magical vermentino, delicately tropical, aromatic, and vibrant; a smoky, nimble aglianico; or a dainty trebbiano dry rosé. Reilly likes elegant wines that beg to be drunk with food. He highlights the new style of winemaking, in which masterful restraint and finesse create distinction without getting in the way.

The Innovators

Founded 2018 |  Stonewall

On land that belonged to the Lyndon B. Johnson ranch, this lovely, bucolic tasting room nestled under shading oaks was the dream of Erin and Tony Smith from Austin. The pieces fell into place when their kids and their spouses joined them from Dallas—one son-in-law a sommelier, the other a former corporate attorney who trained to become a winemaker. John Rivenburgh, the tannat king who was part of that varietal’s revolution, and whose Kerrville Hills Collective they’re using to make the wines, provided guidance. From a deep, dark tannat to the dazzling 2019 clairette blanche, a first for their estate and a first in Texas, it’s baby steps to pétillant naturels and sparkling reds. They’re genre-pushing and want to be part of the story of learning what grows well in Texas. Their accomplished wines are now part of the expanding universe.

— Tasting room: Fri. 12-5 pm; Sat. 12-6 pm; Sun. 12-5 pm.

The Mentors

William chris vineyards.

Founded 2008 | Hye

No wine country tour would be complete without William Chris Vineyards, which produces thoughtful, exquisitely precise wines. Decades ago, while standing in the property’s oak grove, founders Chris Brundrett and Bill Blackmon were two of the first to commit to using 100 percent Texas grapes. Old and new still mingle here, as the new tasting room’s world of concrete and glass joins the original farmhouse from the former turkey farm. The vineyard’s portfolio is deep, running from its standout single-vineyard mourvèdre, redolent of black cherry, plum, and leather, to Mary Ruth, a dainty, aromatic white blend of malvasia bianca and blanc du bois named after Blackmon’s mother. Numerous scene-broadening winemakers get their start here.

— Bottle service and educational food pairings by reservation: Mon.-Wed. 10 am-5 pm; Thurs.-Sat. 10 am-6 pm; Sun. 11 am-5 pm.

The Iberian Explorer

Lewis wines.

Founded 2010 | Johnson City

Doug Lewis, who cut his teeth at Pedernales Cellars, is the wunderkind making wine with Portuguese grape varietals like touriga nacional, tinto çao, and arinto. He favors low-intervention techniques on the Round Mountain Vineyard he leases, and he also takes advantage of grapes from carefully selected local growers. His portfolio includes port; a vinho verde-style white made with chenin blanc and blanc du bois (sometimes cut with albariño or muscat); and tinto çao, which he shapes into an age-worthy wine that mingles elegant black fruit, licorice, and tobacco. The winery’s coat of arms hails from his father’s family, the Lewises, reflecting Welsh or Viking—not Iberian—roots. The crest speaks to a desire for an Old World approach to wine, one focused on the relationships between vineyard, grower, and winemaker that express terroir. “If we have a pretty simple way of making wine, the vineyard speaks for itself,” Lewis says.

The Sophisticates

Pedernales cellars.

Founded 2005 | Stonewall

This winery has one of the most picturesque views along Highway 290. A century-old agave plant at the entrance welcomes visitors to an old farmhouse and a new winery built into a hillside. For me and many others, Pedernales presented the albariño and viognier that were revelations in the mid-2000s. David Kulkhen’s precise winemaking, informed by the esteemed University of California at Davis enology program, helped make Pedernales part of the cohort (along with Duchman, William Chris, and others) that raised Texas wine to the international level of competition. His wines are elegant. Beautifully cultivated grapes find expression in blends, like the GSM Melange, with its Texas twist; or single-varietals like the viognier, with its luxurious weight of satin.

The Umbrella

Slate mill wine collective.

Founded 2016 (Rebranded 2020) | Fredericksburg

Recently, and with new ownership, Slate Mill Wine Collective established itself as a custom crush facility—an incubator model that provides smaller brands with access to equipment and cellar crews. The winery was crafting already under the 1851 Vineyards label, named after the founding date of the winery’s original flour mill. But then they brought on rising-star winemakers who are examples of what collectives allow. Like Randy Hester, a sort of voluntary prodigal son, who brought back to Texas more than a decade of experience in Napa to infuse the scene with his precisely crafted C.L. Butaud wines (big reds and unctuous whites). Or sommelier-turned-winemaker Rae Wilson, who, in 2014, launched Dandy rosé, a bright, dry, Provençal-style rosé slam dunk that catapulted her. A new label, La Valentía, will favor site-specific older vines. Wilson’s involvement with Andrew Sides of Lost Draw Cellars on The Grower’s Project label highlights a desire to tap Texas wine’s vast potential and sustainability through specifically nurtured, small-production growers’ fruit. Also on the roster: Slate Mill’s own winemaker and Tatum Cellars founder Josh Fritsche, who until earlier this year was at William Chris. Try his work in Slate Mill’s lime-bright, mouthwatering trebbiano or in Tatum Cellars’ gorgeous mourvèdre with bold black fruit. Note: Dandy rosé and C.L. Butaud are available through their sites and at Central Market in Dallas. Tatum Cellars wines are available at Slate Mill.

— Tastings: Thurs.-Sun. 11 am-6 pm; Sun.-Mon. 12-5 pm. Production tours by appointment only.

The Mad Genius

Calais winery and french connection wines.

Founded 2008 and 2019 | Hye

Benjamin Calais is the French génie fou with piercing blue eyes and unruly hair who is making Bordeaux-style reds and elegant, oaked whites on land that’s bare save for a French flag and a “cave” dug into the earth. He is obsessed with and passionate about cabernet sauvignon, and so he has done the hard work of seeking the sites where it grows, sourcing from the highest elevations in Alpine and the Davis Mountains AVA, braving frost and hail. He’s able to deliver cabernets that rival those from France or Napa Valley, using single vineyards that express themselves powerfully. But also a picpoul blanc, a sauvignon blanc from some of the oldest semillon vines, and a mourvèdre-heavy rosé meant to age or drink with food. On top of a nearby hill is Calais’ other venture, French Connection Wines, which he debuted just over a year ago with two sommeliers, one of whom is his fiancée. Here, his precise winemaking is focused on lighter varieties of reds, whites, and rosés, like a beautiful, limpid counoise rosé. Nosh on boards with triple crèmes and jambon de Bayonne, and “ la vie est belle ” feels true.

— Calais Winery: curbside pickup Fri. 12-4 pm, Sat. 11 am-5 pm, Sun. 12-4 pm; tastings by appointment at Bryan’s on 290. French Connection Wines: tastings with reservations Fri. 12-6 pm; Sat. 11 am-6 pm; Sun. 11 am-5 pm.

The Groundbreakers

Fall creek vineyard.

Founded 1975 | Driftwood

Susan and Ed Auler’s winery has been sitting prettily in Driftwood, across from Salt Lick BBQ, since 2014. But the couple has been growing grapes in Tow since 1975, when hardly anyone was growing grapes in Texas. Susan is a grand dame of Texas wine, and she is still an influential winery owner. Ed was instrumental in claiming the Hill Country AVA appellation in 1990. Now, with a Chilean winemaker, they continue a roster of consistently outstanding quality. With a GSM, cabernet sauvignon, mourvèdre, sauvignon blanc, and a grenache rosé, the roster focuses on French varietals—both Rhône Valley and Bordeaux. A surprising chardonnay is creamy and beautifully structured, an example of how a winemaker can coax intrigue from a grape not built to thrive here.

— Tastings: Mon.-Sat. 11 am-7 pm; Sun. 12-5 pm.

McPherson Cellars

Lubbock, TX

Winemaker Kim McPherson and his father, the late Dr. “Doc” Clinton, have a star-studded father-son legacy in the heart of the High Plains AVA in Lubbock. A Texas Tech chemistry professor, Doc was one of the first to push into cotton-farming territory and experiment with grapes, midwifing the birth of an industry. Theirs was the first sangiovese, but their whites also shine, whether old-vine chenin blanc or Les Copains white, a lovely blend of Rhône varietals. (Doc also founded nearby Llano Estacado Winery.)

Brennan Vineyards

Comanche, TX

In its own niche in Comanche, which doesn’t fall in any AVA, Brennan is a pioneer. Try the award-winning Super Nero, made from the nero d’avola grape, which they were the first to acquire and plant in Texas. Also try the Lily, an aromatic blend of two of the state’s headiest whites, roussanne and malvasia bianca.

Eden Hill Winery and Vineyard

With a tiny, rainwater-fed family vineyard in Celina, grapes sourced from the High Plains, and a tasting-room seat at the Dallas Farmers Market, this relatively new winery is making a roster of competition-winning wines close to home, including the inky Midnight in the Vineyard, made from the negro amaro grape from Puglia, and beautiful things with muscat, roussanne, and a blend of viognier and albariño.

Haak Vineyards and Winery

Santa Fe, NM

This Galveston-area winery has been crafting with blanc du bois since 2000. Founder Raymond Haak—who retired this year after fashioning the grape into an award-winning dry white, semi-dry, or sweet wine; a port; and a madeira—was instrumental in bringing the grape to Texas. So the answer to the question of whether we make dessert wine in Texas: why, yes, we do.

As the fifth-largest wine-producing state in the US, Texas is home to more than 400 wineries and eight designated AVAs. Its wine industry contributes $13bn to the Lone Star State’s economy.

Spanish missionaries are credited with planting the first vines in the 1650s near the modern-day city of El Paso. However, the tourist hub of the rising Texas wine scene is undeniably the charming Texas Hill Country AVA, which sprawls in a loose triangle from Austin to Fredericksburg down to San Antonio.

From upscale tasting rooms to casual dog-friendly stops, featuring panoramic decks overlooking vineyards, live music, homemade pizzas and more, winery day trips promise a little bit of everything all packaged in legendary Texas hospitality.

While Texas Hill Country is the industry’s well-known tourist face, 80% of the state’s grapes (about 1,500ha) are grown in the 3.2 million ha expanse of the High Plains AVA surrounding the west Texas city of Lubbock. Today more than 75 different grape varieties grow in High Plains thanks to its continental climate, significant diurnal shifts and elevations ranging from about 900m to 1200m.

By contrast, scenic Texas Hill Country accounts for 18% of the state’s wine grape production with about 400ha under vine. It is home to the state’s most visited wineries and tasting rooms.

Texas Hill Country: wineries to visit

Enjoying a picnic under the oaks at Duchman Family Winery.

Duchman Family Winery

Situated about 50km southwest of Austin, Duchman (pronounced ‘Dukeman’) is a family-owned winery committed to producing wines with 100% Texas fruit. It has grown to become one one of the largest producers of 100% Texas wine in the state.

Duchman specialises in Italian varieties like Aglianico , Dolcetto , Montepulciano , Sangiovese , Trebbiano and Vermentino but Roussanne and Viognier are recent additions to the portfolio, with winemaker Dave Reilly sourcing most of the fruit from the Texas High Plains AVA.

Guests are welcome to enjoy tastings in the impressive Tuscan-inspired winery or at outdoor seating and picnic tables within the gorgeously sprawling 16ha of grounds. Texas hospitality shines bright with plenty of food options to accompany the various wine tasting formats, from homemade pizzas and charcuterie boards to truffle and parmesan fries.

Spicewood Vineyards

Decidedly dog-friendly, Spicewood Vineyards offers high hospitality with a super chill vibe. A 35-minute drive from Austin, the winery – boasting 13ha of beautiful grounds including estate vines, outdoor patio seating and event centre options – is family-owned and run by Ron Yates.

Working with a dozen grape varieties, Yates creates everything from a Grenache -based Pét Nat and estate-grown sparkling Semillon , to a gutsy GSM blend and structured Syrah . But it is Spicewood’s Tempranillo that is a showstopper. After time in Spain, Yates returned with an appreciation of what it takes to grow great Tempranillo, and believed Texas Hill Country was more than capable.

A former musician and lawyer, Yates is hands-on in all aspects of the business – he might even be the one serving in the tasting room. Spicewood showcases two tasting options of six wines each: $15 for the regular tasting or $30 for all-estate wines. Charcuterie boards are available, or visitors can bring a picnic from nearby Opie’s BBQ (see below).

  • Wine to try: The velvety-textured 2017 Estate Tempranillo or the 2017 Battle of Toro, a bold blend of Tempranillo with Touriga Nacional .
  • Address: 1419 Burnet County Road 409, Spicewood, TX 78669
  • Open: Daily 11am-6pm

David Kuhlken, winemaker at Pedernales Cellars.

Pedernales Cellars

Established in 2006 by Texan siblings Julie and David Kuhlken, Pedernales Cellars was a natural offshoot from the family’s Kuhlken Vineyards, planted in 1995. David is the winemaker and Julie runs the operations, marketing and tasting room. They have about 7ha of estate vineyards and source 75% of their fruit from the Texas High Plains AVA.

Located off Highway 290, just 20 minutes’ drive southeast of Fredericksburg, Pedernales offers panoramic hill country views and exceptional tasting and tour opportunities for day trippers. Visit the winery and cellar and try some barrel samples ($60) or make an appointment for the reserve tasting ($35), which highlights the winery’s reds – including a selection of limited library wines and exclusive wine club offerings.

Tempranillo is the heart of the Pedernales Cellars’ wine program, with vivid appearances in single-varietal bottlings to red blends as well as Port-style fortified wines.

  • Wine to try: The 2018 Tempranillo Reserve, a gutsy blend of Hill Country and High Plains fruit. Or the vibrantly rich 2018 Viognier.
  • Address: 2916 Upper Albert Rd, Stonewall, TX 78671
  • Open: Monday to Thursday 10am-5pm, Friday & Saturday 10am- 6pm; Sunday 12pm-5pm

Bending Branch Winery

Bending Branch is the Tannat house of Texas. This red variety, normally seen in Uruguay and Madiran in Southwest France, is created in multiple styles here, from still and sparkling rosé to various blends and single-vineyard Tannats.

With a keen interest in the health benefits of red wine, physician-turned-winemaker Robert Young founded Bending Branch in 2007. Young focused on Tannat as his signature grape, thanks in part to its high levels of phenolic compounds like procyanidins, shown to contribute to cardiovascular health.

Young uses cryomaceration to increase tannin levels as well as thermovinification to remove pyrazines and extract phenolic compounds, while also reducing fermentation times to five days instead of the traditional 10 to 15 days. The result is a Tannat of great density, body and robust fruit character plus well-integrated tannins.

  • Wine to try:  The 2018 Tallent Vineyards Tannat for its tight-knit tannins and ripe black fruit character wrapped in peppery spice.
  • Address: 142 Lindner Branch Trail, Comfort, TX 78013
  • Open: Daily 12pm-6pm
  • Contact: Call (830) 995-2948 or email [email protected] for reservations.

Guide to the Best Wineries in Texas Hill Country AVA

Guide to the Best Wineries in Texas Hill Country AVA

A Guide to the best Wineries in Texas Hill Country - A Day trip near Austin & Fredericksburg

Discover the best wineries in Texas Hill Country.

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, headed out to Texas’s wine country for the first time. Mixed reviews plagued me whenever I mentioned my upcoming trip to other winos… some loved the area, some didn’t believe they were capable of making good wine, others touted the great wine but complained about “Napa prices”. A true mixed bag of thoughts.

What I ultimately found here, was a charming, down-to-earth wine region producing high-quality, balanced wines, and excellent experiences.

It seems Texas Hill Country has found itself in recent years, with wineries learning to adapt and trust in the terroir, leaning into new varieties, and crafting wine reaches new benchmarks of quality.

About the Texas Hill Country AVA

The Texas Hill Country AVA is the third-largest AVA in the country, covering 9 million acres, or almost 15,000 square miles. Spreading from San Antonio to San Saba, and just west of Austin to Rocksprings, the AVA currently contains over 60 wineries. Established in 1991, led by Ed and Susan Auler of Fall Creek Vineyards, it is the southern-most AVA in the US.

The area’s climate is “humid subtropical”, with temperatures that average from 52-87 degrees Fahrenheit. A typical growing season is March to early August… shorter than typical.

Winemakers here have found success with grapes that come from areas such as Spain, Italy, Portugal, Argentina, and the Rhône Valley in the south of France — all areas that have climates and soil structures comparable to the high plains of Texas. You won’t find a California copycat here, as many fear, but rather a distinct area with its own unique personality.

Austin Wine Country Day Trip Itinerary

Austin was my home base during this stay. I found it an easy day trip to go from here to wherever we wanted to go in Texas Hill Country – be aware though, the wine region is BIG. You’ll want to plot out your ideal wineries ahead of time and make sure your itinerary makes sense, leaving plenty of time to get between wineries.

We started the day as far out as we planned to go, approximately an hour and a half from Austin, then worked our way back to the city.

Please note, this itinerary has a few wineries that are spaced a ways apart, but I wanted to capture a wide range of winery sizes, history, and winemaking styles in my trip. If you replicate it, check the distance in between and plan your schedule accordingly. The other important factor for me was that all wineries on this itinerary craft wines from Texas grapes. There are a number of wineries that import in from other states, but when I’m exploring a place, I want to truly experience it through and through.

When planning your itinerary, I would definitely recommend adding  Vino Vinyasa to the list. This hour-long, educational yoga class incorporates fun wine facts through creative poses. At the end of the class, you’re offered a comparative wine tasting that invites you to mindfully taste what’s in your glass while applying what you learned through the poses. It’s a truly unique experience that you won’t want to miss out on!

August Vin - Texas Hill Country AVA Winery

Augusta Vin

I traveled through Texas Hill Country with one of my best friends from high school, and she highly recommended Augusta Vin as one of her favorite stops.

Located on a 60-acre vineyard with sprawling views, Augusta Vin is a charming and relaxing place to sit back and take in Texas wine country. The tasting room is located in a 2-story timber-framed tasting room that’s absolutely chic, and just opened in 2019.

Here, you can’t miss their house-made chocolate truffle paired with their Estate Petite Sirah. It’s mind-blowing. In addition to seated wine tastings, they also offer a vineyard tour experience and delicious small plates.

Their wines are outstanding – my favorite of the entire day was actually their Sangiovese. Beautifully balanced with notes of raspberry, dark cocoa, leather, and tobacco.

Despite the newness of Augusta Vin itself, the land is rich in history from long before. Well-known as one of the founding families of Fredericksburg, the Klein’s lived on these grounds during the mid-1800s, followed by the Schmidt family, during the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. Today, Augusta Vin respects the historical family heritage by maintaining the old Schmidt homestead, built by the second Schmidt generation in 1912.

Southold Farm & Cellars - Texas Hill Country AVA Winery

Southold Farm & Cellars

Southold Farm & Cellars has the absolute most stunning views. Perched high on top of a hill with panoramic visibility, it was breathtaking. Their unique “Wine Study” offers outdoor seating at picnic tables or on swinging porch benches to sip your wines and enjoy the ambiance.

Interestingly, Southold Farm + Cellar is a winery and vineyard that started on the North Fork of Long Island by Regan and Carey Meador, sold, moved and now exists in Gillespie County, Texas.

Their wines are produced naturally and with minimal intervention, meaning they’re a little funkier than what the average wine-drinker may be used to. While they may be foggy in appearance, they’re clearly indicative of place & time and share the story of Texas and the specific vintage in which they were made.

Here, the Chardonnay was my favorite – and we loved swinging in the porch swing while sipping wine and enjoying their delicious locally-sourced small bites.

William Chris Vineyards - Texas Hill Country AVA Winery

William Chris Vineyeards

Founded by William “Bill” Blackmon and Chris Brundrett, William Chris Vineyards was a visionary partnership that combined numerous years of Texas winegrowing experience from them both. As the word ‘winegrowers’ implies, Bill and Chris agree that great wines are not made but grown. They also believe that wine should be inspired by the pleasure that is shared with an extended community of friends and family. The creation of each new vintage depends greatly upon these two priorities.

William Chris Vineyards bottled their first vintage in 2008, utilizing Old-World winemaking techniques to create a genuine expression of Hill Country’s distinctive terroir.

Today, that expression continues to shine through in their beautifully balanced and thoughtful wines. Live music is often featured on weekends, and the overall ambiance is laid-back and fun. Their winemaking uses only 100% Texas grapes in everything they produce.

Fall Creek Vineyards - Texas Hill Country AVA Winery

Fall Creek Vineyards

As a lover of wine history, Fall Creek was an important stop on my itinerary – it’s here where Ed and Susan Auler began their pioneering journey, starting the Texas Hill Country wine-growing tradition.

45-or-so years ago, inspired by a trip to France in search of cattle for their family ranch, Susan and Ed Auler returned home to the Hill Country with an unexpected dream: to make Texas an internationally recognized wine region.

Ultimately, it was Ed’s application to the U.S. government for the Texas Hill Country that quite literally put this region on the map. AVA status was granted in 1990,  identifying the Texas Hill Country region as a recognized and respected viticultural region.

Today, the family is known as the first family of Texas wines, and the winery continues to focus on 100 percent terroir-driven wines, rooted in the best Texas soils and crafted by their talented winemaking team.

Tasting rooms are located in Tow, and Driftwood. Both beautiful locations well-worth a visit!

Texas Winemaking history

Texas winemaking dates back to the Spanish missionaries in the mid-17th century. Wine, primarily made from the Mission grape variety back then, played an important role in the area’s history and was the most valuable product when the area became part of the United States in 1848. Unfortunately for this area, California’s wine boom ultimately made it unlikely for development – the Texas wine industry dwindled to irrelevance before Prohibition stamped it out completely.

Thankfully, a new generation of wineries has sprung up since the 1970s, with over 287 wineries at the beginning of 2017.

The most planted variety in Texas is Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot, Tempranillo, and Viognier. The area’s hot summers and short growing season favor varieties that can withstand the heat.

For the best night of sleep after a long day of sipping delicious wine, fall back on a king bed made with plush duvets, 1500-count linens, and rich, woven textiles that reflect the charm and classic look of Texas decor.

The Summit Tent features an en suite bathroom that is stocked with spa-quality products, plush bathrobes, and a wood-burning stove to keep your retreat comfortable and warm.

Our Family Suite and Honeymoon Suite additions allow you to have additional space for your children or a more private and romantic evening.

Other Hill Country Activities

Once you realize the benefits of extending your winery day trip to a weekend-long exploration of Hill Country, you may be ready to enjoy one of the many other experiences Hill Country has on offer.

Horseback Riding

To experience Hill Country as your fellow Texans have for hundreds of years, try horseback riding. As a Collective Retreats guest, you simply have to book a time through our concierge for a two-hour horseback ride through the ranch.

There is no previous experience required, and you will be taken through a brief training and informational session, so you feel confident when you mount your horse. Since the tour is exclusive to Collective Retreats guests, it will be an intimate experience that gives you the opportunity to personalize your ride and immerse yourself in the scenery.

Another wonderful way to explore Hill Country is on foot. There are countless hikes in the area, but Collective Retreats makes the decision-making process easier since there are two trails right on the ranch.

The Canyon Ranch trail is a loop that will take you alongside East Canyon for most of the journey. The midway point of this trail is an extraordinary lookout point that overlooks Hill Country. The Wade Trail is a much shorter trail that walks along the center of the canyon, giving you a one-of-a-kind view down the canyon and beyond.

Grab a gourmet Collective Explorer’s Lunch to take with you on your adventure, or grab a bite before you head out with our Farm to Ranch Breakfast that reflects the best local provisions in the area.

If you are craving a restorative activity to add to your itinerary, be sure to sign up for our daily morning yoga sessions. Designed to strengthen your muscles while centering your mind and relaxing your body, yoga and pilates combine for a unique outdoor flow that’s accessible to all levels of practice.

The yoga sessions are held outside as you immerse yourself in the backdrop of beautiful rolling hills as you stretch. To top the experience off, our Chef will provide homemade green juice once you are finished for a feel-good start to your day.

This Epic Texas Road Trip Visits Underrated Vineyards and Rolling Hills Blanketed in Bluebonnets

Texas Hill Country is one of the most beautiful stretches of the Lone Star State, and its impressive wine scene is only growing.

Mariah Tyler is Travel + Leisure's associate visuals director. She is a photographer and writer who covers Texas, Mexico, desert and city destinations, and design-forward hotels. She also commissions photo essays that highlight diverse voices in travel and unique cultural experiences.

best wineries to visit in texas hill country

From early spring well into early winter, there is always a great time to take a weekend trip through Texas Hill Country — home to some of the most stunning landscapes in Texas.

This vast, rural region of south-central Texas is conveniently close to all major cities. Its rolling hills are only an hour-long drive from Austin and San Antonio and a four-hour jaunt from Dallas and Houston. You will not have an easier day trip in the largest continental state in the country.

Your Guide to the Perfect Summer in Texas

The hills dotted with sprawling cypress and oak trees make for an idyllic road trip route that's especially picturesque in spring and fall. Some of the lushest fields of bluebonnets bloom in spring, and there's nothing more Texan than a bluebonnet photograph .

The main attraction of the region is no longer a secret — Texas Hill Country has become widely known as Texas Wine Country. In fact, Texas is the fifth-highest wine-producing state and is home to the fifth-highest number of wineries, according to data from WineAmerica.org . Texas wine isn't new, but it is rapidly growing, and the quality is only getting better as growers perfect the grapes that do best in the rocky Texas soil.

There are a few noteworthy towns along Highway 290, better known as the Texas Wine Trail, where you will find numerous vacation rentals and historic hotels. Some newer and noteworthy rental accommodations to book are Honey Tree Farm for a real treehouse experience, A-Frame Ranch for tucked-away luxury cabins, and Blue Skies Retro Resort for incredibly fun vintage trailer stays. For a true luxury experience with zero hassle, book a stay at La Cantera Resort & Spa , a Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards winner outside of San Antonio, and their concierge will plan a wine country tour day trip for you.

When it comes to touring wineries, there are bus and limousine tours, of course, but for a more intimate experience, designate a driver to achieve the real road trip vibe. (Drivers should be weary of the abundant deer population along the roadway.) From Dripping Springs to Fredericksburg, the wineries and distilleries are in such abundance, planning can quickly become overwhelming for the first-timer.

The best route to choose is based on wine preference, notable wineries, and approximate distance to your booked accommodation. The Texas Vintners Cup is a solid start for selecting award-winning wineries.

Lost Draw Cellars and Slate Theory Winery are in Fredericksburg and offer tastings by reservation. Out on the wine trail, in Hye, Texas, William Chris Vineyards boasts panoramic views of Hill Country from its stunning modern welcome center and Hye Society Wine Club. The new building opened in 2019, and the wine tastings in the library offer a delectable crash course in Texas wines. From learning about the best Texas-grown grapes to sampling the best vintages available, the expert-guided tasting is a valuable experience.

Back in the town of Fredericksburg, take a stroll down Main Street, where you can sip wine and beer while you shop. With a long history of German influence, Otto's German Bistro is the best place in town for a Texas German dinner. For the brunch lovers, Hill & Vine offers a unique brunch menu with black-eyed pea hummus and peachy pecan pancakes. Short on time and need a bite to go? Hye Market and Deli has delicious sandwiches, perfect for lunch in between tastings.

Nature enthusiasts can experience Pedernales Falls State Park and Enchanted Rock State Natural Area — each one has options for anyone who loves to hike, swim, and even ride on horseback. Texas Hill Country, with its winding roads and hilly vistas of live oak trees and prickly pear, is one of the most scenic places in the Lone Star State and offers some of the best wines east of California.

9 TX Hill Country Wineries With Lodging

It’s hard to beat this area’s best Texas wines, wine tastings, and live music. I think the hill country will be my retirement place – it’s just so serene in the rolling hill and the perfect place to spend the rest of your life – but that’s another article.

10 TX Hill Country Wineries With Lodging

1. Farmhouse Vineyard & Marketplace

Johnson city.

The Farmhouse Vineyards & Marketplace & “Tipsy” Trailer is a tasting room and marketplace. Taste wine, enjoy a charcuterie board, and shop around – they have great items and excellent chocolate! They are down the street from the popular Bryans On 290 restaurants. FYI – make reservations if you plan to dine there.

Though their rental property is not next to their winery, it’s across the street, within walking distance. I’ve enjoyed staying at the Vagabonds on Pecan, a southern ranch-style home with the same owner as the Farmhouse Vineyards & Marketplace. It’s a beautiful home with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a dining area, a den and living room, and a full kitchen. And a beautiful backyard where you can sit and gaze for hours.

A must-see is the “Tipsy” Trailer – a 1978 Airstream renovated into a tasting room parked under the large oak trees on the same property as the Farmhouse Winery – 402 East Main Street. There’s lots of seating outdoors, with music and special events occasionally.

They also have another rental property on Main Street, but it’s a bit of a walk, but a 3-minute drive or less. You can’t miss it, located near the Johnson City Coffee Co. Rent the Tasting House on Airbnb .

2. Carter Creek Winery Resort & Spa

Carter Creek Winery Resort And Spa – an upscale family-owned rustic boutique wine resort with spacious villas and luxury amenities, including a spa.

The Old 290 Brewery – a rustic brewery and restaurant that combines beer and Texas cuisine like good ole steak, conveniently located on Hwy 290.

So you’ve got overnight lodging, a winery, a vineyard, a brewery, and a restaurant where you can dance – why go anywhere else? Wow, I can’t believe I missed seeing this place while in Johnson City. Next time I’m out that way, I’ll take photos to show here.

Plan a day trip to Pedernales State Park if staying in Johnson City. It’s minutes away, and the falls are gorgeous (if running). Prior reservations online are best. They sell out on day passes on Saturday and sometimes during summer.

3. Westcave Cellars Winery & Brewery

Westcave Cellars is a lovely and friendly winery. There is a guest house behind the winery they rent out when the owners are not staying there.

The winery is very pet-friendly – indoors and out.

Top Things To Do In Johnson City, TX

  • Pedernales State Park
  • Visit Lyndon B. Johnson’s Boyhood Home
  • Get the best local coffee at Johnson City Coffee Co.
  • Take the kids (adults like it too) to the Science Mill Museum .
  • Shop the boutiques on Main Street
  • Make reservations at Bryan’s On 290 – a popular upscale restaurant.
  • Plan a Girlfriend Getaway In Johnson City, TX

4. Flat Creek Estates

Marble falls.

Marble Falls is a marvelous place to rest and self-care. And Flat Creek Estates is a premier wine destination in MF that offers wine tastings and has a lovely restaurant. They kindly ask for reservations so they know you’re coming.

Cozy up at the Vintner’s Quarters at Flat Creek Estate on the property with scenic hill country views. You’ll have the entire house to yourself and your family. Available on Airbnb.

Top Things To Do In Marble Falls

There are also tons to do in Marble Falls. If you’ve never been, you’ll want to visit Balcones Canyonland National Wildlife Refuge and hike the trails. It’s free. Take a half day to visit Sweet Berry Farms , and if you like caves, Burnet, the next town over, has a fantastic cave for touring called Longhorn Caverns . I’ve written The Perfect Girl’s Getaway In Marble Falls  – with where to shop, eat and stay if you would like to read it. It’s a recent article (May 2022).

Hamilton Pool Preserve

5. Hamilton Pool Vineyards And Farm

Dripping springs.

The luxurious Vineyard Estate Home filled with modern amenities at Hamilton Pool Vineyards is steps away from the vineyard. I think you may never want to leave this place – I sure wouldn’t. Anyone who stays here can take leisurely walks on the property, but they also have tours and wine packages at additional costs.

This vineyard is a short drive from downtown Austin, and, as I mentioned above, escaping to Dripping Springs for special occasions makes a lot of sense, especially if you’re looking to relax and rewind.

Side note: Hamilton Pool Vineyards offers a local CSA program for the organic vegetables and herbs they grow on their farm. Of course, you must live nearby to participate, but I thought this was a nice tidbit. They also offer a farm school & education program for adults & youths.

Things To Do In Dripping Springs

  • See the falls at Hamilton Pool Preserve (no swimming allowed).
  • Take a tour at Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center and hike to see the grotto (challenging hike)
  • Check out Mercer Dance Hall (a honky tonk)
  • Play pickleball at DREAMLAND
  • Farmers Market on WEDS at Dr. Pound Farmstead
  • And see all the Texas Waterfalls in Dripping Springs

6. Fall Creek Vineyards

Fall Creek Vineyards at Driftwood is 25 minutes from downtown Austin and situated on lush grounds in the hill country and across the street from the famous Salt Lick BBQ. They offer two venues for overnight guests for a restful and quiet retreat under the expansive Texas sky.

Fall Creek Vineyards Wine Country Inn Guest House is only steps away from the winery. It can’t get any better than this – stay overnight, drink award-winning wine, and eat BBQ across the street – you don’t even have to get into the car.

Fall Creek Vineyards Chardonnay Room is an adult-only romantic getaway for two.

Tip: Go to the website, look under the Visit tab, then click Wine Country Inn to read more about these fabulous stays.

Things To Do In Driftwood

  • Eat BBQ and listen to music at Salt Lick BBQ.

7. Barons Creek Vineyards

Fredericksburg bed and breakfast winery.

Enjoy wine tastings, or take it a step further and include wine education and small bites with your tastings. Barons Creek Vineyards in Fredericksburg won several awards at the 2020 Lone Star International Wine Competition.

The adult-only villas are grand for a relaxed weekend with your significant other. Make it romantic while indulging in luxury in a private villa with a spacious living room, king bed, mini bar, wine tastings, spectacular views of the hill country, and more.

Pro Tip: Children and pets cannot stay in the villas.

8. Messina Hof Hill Country Winery

Fredericksburg.

The Manor Haus B&B cottages  – a Fredericksburg winery bed and breakfast at Messina Hof Hill Country Winery in wine country and one of the best wineries in the area, will be such a treat for you and your partner or whoever you’re traveling with.

Happy hour at the tasting room is Tuesday – Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m., with select glasses of wine for only $5. That’s a deal right there!

I’ve enjoyed visiting Messina Hof in Grapevine, TX, but haven’t had the chance to visit their winery in the hill country. I’d love to enjoy a glass of wine here.

9. Grape Creek Vineyards

Grape Creek Vineyards tops the charts for being the oldest winery on Hwy 290, aka Texas Wine Road, and is impressive with its stainless tanks and premium establishment. Reserve your spot for wine tasting and wine flights just for you and your taste. I love it when I can choose my own wines for tastings.

If you’re familiar with Jenblossom Cellars (JB Cellars), Grape Creek now offers Jenblossom Cellars Tastings for $65 a person. WOW!!

The Vineyard Trail Cottages are available to rent on Airbnb and are located on Hwy 290 in Fredericksburg.

Pro Tip: Better read up on their rules – there are some strict ones! No children, infants, or pets.

10. Mendelbaum Winery

Mendelbaum guest cabins are family-friendly, with a playground and a hot tub for you! With only a short walk (about 5 mins), Mendelbaum Cellars Winery , where you can taste Israeli and Texas wines.

Things To Do In Fredericksburg

  • Peach season in the hill country is in August
  • Lots of shopping to do in this town
  • Restaurants on every corner
  • Tour other wineries if you want
  • Hike Enchanted Rock

These TX Hill Country wineries with lodging are like gold. Be sure to book early and watch for special events in the area. There is always an event in the TX Hill Country.

Horseshoe Bay Resort Wine Tours

I’m not counting Horseshoe Bay as wineries with lodging in Texas because it’s not, but it’s worth mentioning because it’s fun to take a wine tour and let someone else do the driving. The resort doesn’t have a winery on its property but is close to over 30 wineries in the area. Horseshoe Bay Resort Wine Tours offers daily wine tours for its guests to Spicewood and Fredericksburg vineyards. How fun is that! Oh, and private tours are also available.

I’m unsure how you will choose between these wineries with lodging because they are all spectacular!

Texas Hill Country is a paradise for wine lovers. With over 50 wineries operating in the region, there is no shortage of options for those who want to sip on some of the best wines the state has to offer. The area is known for its stunning scenery, warm climate, and excellent wines. In this article, we will explore some of the best wineries in the Texas Hill Country, their history, specialties, and what makes them unique.

One of the most well-known wineries in the region is Becker Vineyards. Established in 1992, Becker Vineyards has won numerous awards for its wines, including Double Gold at the San Francisco International Wine Competition. The winery has over 56 acres of vineyards and produces wines such as Viognier, Malbec, and Merlot. Visitors can enjoy tours of the winery, including the barrel room and wine production facility, as well as a tasting room and wine shop.

Another popular winery in the area is Pedernales Cellars. Founded in 2006, the winery is known for its Tempranillo and Viognier wines. The owners, David and Heather Kuhlken, are passionate about winemaking and have a deep appreciation for the Texas Hill Country region. The winery offers tours of the vineyard and tastings in their elegant tasting room, which features stunning views of the surrounding hills.

Located in the heart of the Hill Country, Grape Creek Vineyards is a winery that produces some of the most exceptional wines in the region. With a focus on Italian varietals, the winery has won numerous awards including Best Red Wine at the Houston Livestock and Rodeo Wine Competition. Visitors can take part in tastings, tour the winery’s beautiful estate, and enjoy a meal at its cozy restaurant.

Lewis Wines is a boutique winery that specializes in natural wine production. The winery produces small-batch wines made from Texas-grown grapes, without additives or chemicals. The owners, Doug and Duncan Lewis, have a philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing the grapes to speak for themselves. Lewis Wines’ tasting room is located in Johnson City, and visitors can taste the winery’s collection of natural wines while enjoying the beautiful countryside views.

William Chris Vineyards is a winery known for its dedication to producing Texas-grown wine. The winery focuses on creating wines that reflect the character of the terroir and the region. William Chris Vineyards has won numerous awards, including Best in Show at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Visitors can take part in tours, tastings and enjoy a picnic on the winery’s spacious lawn.

Winery Tours

A winery tour is an excellent way to experience the best of the Texas Hill Country’s wine scene. Visitors can explore the vineyards, learn about the winemaking process, and taste some of the finest wines produced in the region. Many wineries offer guided tours, providing visitors with insights into the winery’s history, philosophy, and the wines they produce.

The tours typically include a visit to the vineyards, winery production areas, barrel rooms, and storage areas. Visitors also have the opportunity to taste a selection of the winery’s wines while learning about the winemaking process from the winemaker or expert staff. When planning a winery tour, it is advisable to book in advance to ensure availability.

Wine Festivals

Texas Hill Country hosts several wine festivals throughout the year. These events are an excellent opportunity for wine enthusiasts to taste some of the best wines from the region and meet the winemakers. The festivals usually feature live music, food, and wine tastings from multiple wineries, making for an unforgettable experience.

The events draw wine lovers from across the state, with tens of thousands attending each festival. Some of the most popular wine festivals include the Hill Country Wine and Food Festival and the Fredericksburg Food and Wine Fest. Wine lovers can sample the best wines Texas has to offer and enjoy the beautiful scenery and festive atmosphere.

Texas Hill Country Wine Trail

The Texas Hill Country Wine Trail is a 45-mile stretch of road that takes visitors on a tour of some of the best wineries in the region. The trail winds its way through picturesque countryside and quaint towns, making it an excellent way to explore the region’s wine culture.

The wine trail features over 50 wineries and tasting rooms, with something to suit every taste. Visitors can explore the wineries at their own pace, tasting the finest wines and enjoying the beautiful scenery. Some of the wineries offer tours, and many have restaurants, picnic areas, and shops selling wine-related gifts and souvenirs.

Wine Pairing

Wine pairing is the art of matching wine with food to enhance the dining experience. Texas Hill Country’s wineries offer some of the best wines in the state, making them an ideal destination for wine pairing. The region’s wineries offer a range of varietals, each with unique characteristics that can complement different foods.

For example, a bold and fruity red wine pairs well with grilled steak or barbecue, while a crisp white wine pairs well with seafood or light salads. Some wineries offer food pairing experiences, where visitors can enjoy a selection of dishes expertly paired with the winery’s wines. A wine and food pairing experience is an excellent way to enhance the flavors of both and is sure to be a memorable experience.

Whether it’s your first trip to the Hill Country or you’ve lived here all your life, these small towns in the Texas Hill Country are a delight to visit.

Beautiful Texas Hill Country Towns

Fredericksburg.

Without a doubt, Fredericksburg is the most famous Hill Country town in Texas!

Known for its German heritage, prominent location along Wine Road 290 (aka its many wineries), many festivals, and proximity to other Hill Country favorites like Luckenbach, Enchanted Rock , and Old Tunnel State Park , Fredericksburg is one of the absolute best TX Hill Country towns to visit.

While you’re there, be sure to indulge in a few wine tastings, enjoy shopping on Main Street, stay in a charming bed and breakfast , and have at least one gut-busting meal worth of German food!

Check out our guide to the best things to do in Fredericksburg !

Located just outside of San Antonio, Boerne is not only one of the best day trips from San Antonio , but one of the coolest towns in the Hill Country!

Known for (like Fredericksburg) its German heritage, wineries, and shopping (in this case, the idyllic Hill Country Mile), Boerne also boasts some of the coolest caves in Texas , including Cascade Caverns and Cave Without a Name.

Located right where the Blanco River meets Cypress Creek in the Texas Hill Country, Wimberley is one of the best Hill Country towns in Texas for those looking for a swim.

The nearby  Blue Hole  and  Jacob’s Well both draw in plenty of visitors hoping to beat the Texas heat, but if you visit, be sure to also for exploring Wimberley’s wonderful art and music scenes, including the many whimsical painted boot sculptures you’ll find around town.

For incredible Hill Country views in exchange for very little effort, don’t miss climbing Old Baldy while in Wimberley!

Drive Highway 71 from Austin to Llano (or nearby Burnet ) in April, and you just may find some of the most beautiful bluebonnet patches in Texas!

The bluebonnets aren’t the only reason to visit, though.

Llano is packed with unexpected things to do, including spotting the bald eagles that nest nearby, strolling across the walkable Roy B. Inks Bridge that crosses the Llano River, and visiting Shakedown Street, an alley-slash-music-venue decorated with Grateful Dead-themed murals.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and Inks Lake State Park are also both accessible from lovely Llano.

With a population of literally 3 people, Luckenbach, Texas, is more of a music venue than a town these days–but despite its minuscule size, it’s well worth a visit!

Luckenbach’s historic post office is now a gift shop, but it remains one of the most popular photo spots in Texas.

And, whether you stop by on a random Tuesday afternoon or on a Friday night, you’re bound to enjoy some live music while relaxing under the shade of live oaks while you’re there.

Dripping Springs

Home to the famous Hamilton Pool Preserve, plenty of wineries and distilleries, and some of Texas’ loveliest Hill Country wedding venues, Dripping Springs nicknamed itself the “Gateway to the Hill Country” for good reason!

While exploring Dripping Springs, be sure to check out Tillies, a beautiful restaurant housed in a former Vietnamese courthouse that was imported to Texas, charming Mercer Street with its boutiques and restaurants, the Dr. Pound Farmstead, and–my personal favorite–Texas Hill Country Olive Oil Co., where you can pick up local Texas olive oil (it’s delicious and we keep some on hand in our pantry at all times).

As the Lavender Capital of Texas, Blanco is known for its beautiful lavender farms and the corresponding festival that happens each summer–but that’s not the only reason to plan a visit to Blanco!

Other attractions include going for a swim at Blanco State Park and chowing down at Old 300 BBQ (I love the Sam Houston sandwich, personally).

Johnson City

A winery housed in a castle, one of the most beautiful displays of Christmas lights in Texas, and the Johnson Settlement (complete with a few longhorns) where President Johnson’s grandparents originally settled in Texas are just a few of the delightful things that you’ll find in Johnson City!

Johnson City is one of my personal favorite Hill Country towns: its downtown is small but fairly walkable, its courthouse square charming, the antiquing plentiful, and its location–along Highway 290 and not far from Pedernales Falls State Park–sublime.

Check out our guide to the best things to do in Johnson City !

Technically, Gruene isn’t a Texas Hill Country town in its own right, but rather a historic district in the city of New Braunfels .

However, that wasn’t always the case, and to this day, visitors come from all over Texas to enjoy Gruene!

Known for being home to Gruene Hall, the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas, Gruene is a Hill Country favorite with locals and visitors alike.

This small town is both shady and walkable (both enormous wins in Central Texas), and packed with shops, restaurants (Gristmill, which is housed in an old cotton gin overlooking the river, is among the best), and access to tubing on the Guadalupe River.

Check out our guide to the best things to do in Gruene !

As the Barbecue Capital of Texas, there’s one rule for visiting Lockhart: arrive very hungry.

From the moment you arrive in town, Black’s Barbecue, Kreuz Market, Smitty’s Market, and Chisholm Trail BBQ are ready to compete for your attention!

If you can swing it, the perfect day trip to Lockhart includes two Texas barbecue stops (easier said than done–ask me how I know) and a stroll around downtown.

In addition to its barbecue fame, Lockhart is also known for having one of the most beautiful historic courthouses in Texas!

Marble Falls

Located on the banks of Lake Marble Falls (which aren’t set on marble at all, but that classic Texas staple of limestone), Marble Falls is a charming Hill Country town perfect for both outdoor enthusiasts and those hoping to hit up the small-but-lovely downtown.

If you’re visiting during bluebonnet season , don’t miss the Bluebonnet House along 281, an abandoned farmhouse in town that boasts a beautiful field of bluebonnets in front of it in the spring.

Also, regardless of the time of year, don’t leave town without trying a slice of pie from the Blue Bonnet Cafe, which serves up some of the best pie in Texas!

Check out our guide to the best things to do in Marble Falls !

The tiny, unincorporated community of Driftwood may be dispersed (you won’t find a charming town center here), but it’s still among the best small towns in the Hill Country to visit!

Home to famous Salt Lick BBQ, its share of wineries, a picturesque, historic Texaco station that makes a fantastic Hill Country photo op, and more, Driftwood is a delight to explore.

It’s also sandwiched between Austin and Dripping Springs, making Driftwood very convenient to visit.

The self-proclaimed Cowboy Capital of the World is definitely worth checking out when exploring Central Texas!

If you’re looking for a great place to take an afternoon horseback ride or even to spend a full weekend at a dude ranch (definitely a Texas bucket list item for Texans and visitors alike), then Bandera is the TX Hill Country town for you.

Bandera’s cozy downtown is also home to plenty of restaurants and a surprising number of independent museums, ensuring you’ll find plenty of things to do both on and off the ranch.

Passport, Please

50 hill country wineries issue passports for fall tastings.

Pedernales Cellars Hill Country Winery

Pedernales is one of nearly 50 wineries in on the Texas Wine Month Passport.

Just thinking about the sheer number of Hill Country wineries could leave a traveler feeling tipsy. A returning fall passport makes hopping between them easier, with discounts and tastings at 50 wineries.

October is Texas Wine Month; the end of the harvest season, the transition to later stages of wine-making, and a much more tolerable time to be outside in fields.

This particular passport, active throughout the entire month, includes complimentary tastings at up to four wineries per day. Holders can also get exclusive discounts on bottle purchases, and they should keep in mind that they can only visit each winery once.

It's one of four passports by Texas Hill Country Wineries (THCW), which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Others include the Valentine's Day-adjacent Wine Lovers Celebration, the Wine & Wildflower Journey, and the Christmas Wine Affair — all more niche, themed events. The broader, purely wine-focused event in October is also in its 25th iteration.

Along with setting similar events for wineries to organize their calendars around, this nonprofit trade association helps its various vineyards by acting as a hands-off tour guide for travelers, who can use resources like an interactive wine map to narrow down venues according to their needs.

It also provides scholarships within the wine industry, and $5 from each passport sold will go toward helping Texas students get degrees in viticulture, enology, or hospitality.

For wine-lovers in search of a more curated experience, there are plenty of single-day activities coming up, including a whole list of wine stomping events into early September. Those are followed by the association's seated Fall Winemaker Dinner on September 6; a different six-course dinner by Chefs John and Elise Russ of San Antonio's Clementine on September 22; and a community barbecue cook-off on September 28.

Texas Wine Month Passports ($85 for individuals, $120 for couples) are available for purchase now at texashillcountrywineries.org . THCW is partnering with Horseshoe Bay Resort to support the 2024 Texas Wine Month Passport. Reservations are recommended at each participating winery.

NEWS YOU CAN EAT

Culinary comebacks and a steakhouse celebration ignite san antonio restaurant news.

As always, more restaurants of many tastes are coming to San Antonio. A Mexican steakhouse is priming a new location while two much-missed concepts are staging comebacks.

Castle Hills eatery Tu Asador is ahead of schedule on the debut of its second location, originally scheduled for September. The Mexican steakhouse took to Instagram to trumpet the soft opening of its 1662 Encino Rio #100 restaurant, starting at 8 am on August 16. After making a reservation, be sure to stop by the liquor store. The concept will be BYOB until its mixed beverage license is secured.

South Side beer garden Brooster’s Backyard Icehouse is ready for a comeback. The watering hole closed in April after four years of business, citing a rocky economic climate. On August 7, reps popped back up on social media to announce a new revamped space. The opening date will be announced in the coming weeks.

New Jersey chain Playa Bowls is heading closer to the city core, according to filings at the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). The franchise has submitted plans to renovate a space in the Oak Hills Shopping Center at 7959 Fredericksburg Rd. The new Medical Center location will be the fourth for the company, which has previously focused on the edges of San Antonio.

Although the frenzy of new coffee chains opening in Alamo City has slowed, the trend is not quite over yet. Chicago caffeine purveyor Gloria Jean’s Coffees opened its first local outpost on August 12. The business had previously submitted TDLR paperwork for a location at 101 West Euclid Ave., but it’s unclear if that will come to fruition.

Mall stalwart Auntie Anne’s is teaming up with two nationally recognized brands to open standalone stores in San Antonio. According to TDLR records, a combination Jamba Juice and Auntie’s Anne’s is coming to 7003 Bandera Rd. Meanwhile, locals near 9715 Potranco Rd. should prepare themselves for cinnamon overload when the pretzel shop teams up with Cinnabon . Both stores were originally slated to be complete at the beginning of the year, but the website still lists them as “coming soon.”

Other news and notes

The beloved Boerne restaurant Little Gretel may have shuttered in April, but its legacy is living on. Chef Denise Mazal Resnerova has gathered some of the much-missed spot’s favorite recipes in a new cookbook, The Aroma of Czech Cuisine . Preorders are now open through TCU Press.
