Arkansas's capital is packed with activities for a trip to the city.

The capital of the Natural State , Little Rock is best known for a couple of reasons. President Bill Clinton spent 16 years here as governor—the Clinton Presidential Center houses one of the largest archival collections in presidential history. The city also played a pivotal role in the civil rights movement, when a group of Black teenagers dubbed the “Little Rock Nine” helped pave the way for desegregation in schools. And, thanks to Little Rock’s location along the Arkansas River, there are ample outdoor recreational opportunities to be had here.

These well-known attractions are just some of the more exiting things to do in Little Rock. Travelers seeking art, culture, and food should add these favorite adventures to their Arkansas itinerary.

Check Out The River Market District

Little Rock Tourism

Exploring the River Market District is a must. This bustling area is Little Rock’s premier entertainment neighborhood—it’s filled with bars, restaurants, shops, and museums; the farmers market is also held here. You’ll find some of the city’s top attractions in this neighborhood, too, like the Clinton Presidential Center. Plan to spend the day browsing shops and museums, and come evening, soak up the thriving nightlife scene. You can even purchase an alcoholic beverage and sip it while walking around, as long as you grab an official RMED wristband and cup.

Picnic At The Old Mill

Arkansas Tourism

If you’ve ever seen “Gone With the Wind,” then you’ve seen the Old Mill , which was featured in the 1939 film. This water-powered grist mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features sculptures by Senor Dionicio Rodriguez. Bring a picnic and enjoy the beautiful wooded scenery.

Old Mill ; 3800 Lakeshore Dr, North Little Rock, AR 72116; (501) 791-8538

Bask In The Views From The Big Dam Bridge

The Big Dam Bridge is the longest pedestrian and cycling bridge in North America, boasting a 4,226-foot span. It’s a scenic spot for a stroll, with the bridge connecting over 14 miles of riverside trails. Or, head here at dusk—there are eight observation areas with benches where you can sit and enjoy the killer sunset views.

Perhaps unbeknownst to most, Little Rock is known for being the birthplace of cheese dip. The city hosts the World Cheese Dip Championship every fall, and there are dozens of places around town that serve this tasty dip. That said, Red Door is one of the best places to go—the Blue Mesa Cheese Dip consists of a whopping four types of cheese (be sure to add the smoked tomato hot salsa).

Visit Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site

One of the most important historic sites in the country (and still in operation as a high school), Little Rock Central High School was the epicenter of the desegregation crisis in the 1950s. In 1957, nine Black students enrolled at the formerly all-white school, following the 1954 Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education, which ruled that school segregation was unconstitutional. The “Little Rock Nine,” as they came to be known, endured hostility and abuse at the hands of white anti-integrationists when the students attempted to go to school. Today, visitors can either do a self-guided tour or a ranger-led tour of the school and view the exhibits at the Visitor Center across the street.

The museum always has exciting temporary exhibits on display in addition to permanent exhibits like “We Walk in Two Worlds,” which tells the story of the Osage, Quapaw, and Caddo tribes who first lived in Arkansas.

Visit The Arkansas State Capitol

Funnily enough, the Arkansas State Capitol building was designed to look exactly like the U.S. Capitol building in D.C. (so much so that it’s been used in movies). Take a self-guided tour and explore the grounds at your own pace.

Arkansas State Capitol ; 500 Woodlane St, Little Rock, AR 72201; (501) 682-3000

Enjoy A Performance At The Robinson Center

Learn Something New At The Museum Of Discovery

Families with kids will love spending time at the Museum of Discovery , which features 90 interactive exhibits and programs. Permanent exhibits include Tornado Alley Theater, where visitors can relive the tornado that devastated the Governor’s Mansion district of downtown Little Rock in 1999. The museum is situated alongside Riverfront Park, a gem of a park that has playgrounds, a splash park, meandering paths, history displays, and more than 100 works of art (the Vogel Schwartz Sculpture Garden is located here).

Museum of Discovery ; 500 President Clinton Ave, Little Rock, AR 72201; (501) 396-7050

Bike Along The Arkansas River Trail

Cyclists of all levels bike along the Arkansas River Trail , a 17-mile loop that goes along the north and south banks of the river. This is one of the best ways to see the city, as you get to take in downtown and the riverfront and pass many key landmarks along the trail.

Sip Spirits At Rock Town Distillery

Arkansas’s first legal distillery since Prohibition, Rock Town Distillery churns out award-winning hand-crafted spirits, utilizing ingredients sourced from local farmers. Make time for the tour, where you’ll learn all about the origins of each spirit and taste eight of Rock Town’s own for yourself. The distillery also offers fun cocktail classes, during which participants learn how to make two seasonal cocktails (which you get to drink, of course).

Rock Town Distillery ; 1201 Main St, Little Rock, AR 72202; (501) 907-5244

Wander Through The Argenta Arts District

The Argenta Arts District is equal parts hip and historic, with a bevy of art galleries, music venues, theaters, and breweries, in addition to century-old buildings. Check out the Argenta Plaza Calendar before you go. There’s always a fun community event happening here, from concerts to art walks.

Take A Ride On A Streetcar

For a unique and convenient way to get around, the METRO Streetcar operates throughout the Little Rock and North Little Rock downtown areas seven days a week. Many of the city’s top destinations are linked on the streetcar line (and you don’t have to worry about parking), so it’s a great way to take in the sights. Download the METROtrack app to see how far away the next streetcar is at any given stop.

Stroll The Quapaw Quarter

The Quapaw Quarter is where you’ll find the oldest residential neighborhoods in the city. It comprises three districts: the Governor’s Mansion District, South Main Residential District, and MacArthur Park District. Some of the most notable landmarks in the Quapaw Quarter include the governor’s home, historic churches, Mount Holly Cemetery, and the Little Rock Arsenal Tower Building, a National Historic Landmark dating back to 1840.

Eat Lunch At The Root Cafe

The Root Cafe is a farm-to-table restaurant that’s as charming as they come. Located in SoMa, it’s the perfect lunch spot (and the Esse Purse Museum is right next door), with an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and food that’s made fresh daily. As per their website, all of the meat, eggs, and bread they serve come directly from Arkansas farmers. The house-made bratwursts may be the star of the show, but there’s plenty else to keep diners of all palates and preferences happy.

The Root Cafe ; 500 Main St, Little Rock, AR 72202; (501) 414-0423

Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site free

In 1957, nine Black students enrolled at Little Rock Central High School. The school had been all-white since its construction in 1927. Minnijean Brown, Elizabeth Eckford, Ernest Green, Thelma Mothershed, Melba Pattillo, Gloria Ray, Terrence Roberts, Jefferson Thomas and Carlotta Wells were the first Black students at the school following the 1954 Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education, which ruled that school segregation was unconstitutional. The day the students went to school, they were met with a racist mob of white students as well as about 270 soldiers who barred the entrance to the high school. It took almost two weeks before the Little Rock Nine were able to access the building. Though they were able to enter the school, they faced physical and verbal abuse throughout their high school careers. The Little Rock Nine's historic and brave acts helped to spur the civil rights movement and brought national attention to the U.S.'s racist practices.

Today, Little Rock Central High School is a National Historic Site and is still a working high school. The associated visitor center sits kitty-corner to the school and features exhibits about the desegregation crisis as well as a book store. There is also a Commemorative Garden. Tours of the exterior of Little Rock Central High School are also available, but must be reserved in advance through the National Park Service.

LITTLE ROCK — For years the home at 2111 Cross Street languished, and with it, the memories of a landmark in Little Rock’s history.

Its once-proud face was worn. Strips of paint peeled away, laying its wood open to the wounds of wind and water. The weight of decades sat on its darkened porch. The non-profit organization Preserve Arkansas even listed the home as one of the state’s  most endangered in 2016 .

But in 2019, new owners took possession of the home and poured much-needed love into the wood and brick house that was once the home of Arkansas’ first African American agricultural extension workers and the childhood home of the Little Rock Nine’s Gloria Ray.

This spring, the Dunbar neighborhood house is among those being featured in  the Quapaw Quarter Association’s 59 th  annual tour of homes  May 11-12.

“We were looking for some houses in the area and the current owners were happy to open their house to us and to have it on tour,” said Callie Williams, a Quapaw Quarter Association volunteer and architectural historian. “They’re newer homeowners. They recently purchased the home and have recently done a big renovation and rehabilitation job on the house.

“It was in kind of a sorry state and had fallen into disrepair. They were able to get the house and bring it back,” Williams said.

Mary Lee and Harvey Cincinnatus Ray

The story begins with Mary Lee McCrary and the man who would become her husband, Harvey Cincinnatus Ray.

Educated at the Tuskegee Institute and graduating in 1897, Mary Lee McCrary began teaching at private schools in Alabama and South Carolina. She moved into public education in 1900. She served as an instructor at what was then the new Colored Agricultural and Normal University in the Oklahoma Territory. McCrary was also an entrepreneur and during her time in Oklahoma, she built a successful dressmaking business.

McCrary’s life changed when she met Harvey Cincinnatus Ray, a fellow faculty member at Langston. The couple married, moving to Arkansas. They made their home at 2111 Cross Street.

Harvey Ray would be the first Black county agent of the Arkansas Agricultural Extension Service in 1915 and Mary Ray would become the first Black home demonstration agent in 1916. Their jobs involved bringing the latest university discoveries to help people live better, whether it meant growing more crops or being able to better feed a family.

Work done by the Agricultural Extension Service is undertaken today by the Cooperative Extension Service, the outreach arm of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.

The Rays’ work

Harvey Ray’s appointment included working with farmers in a large swath of Arkansas: Pulaski, Phillips, Jefferson, Lee, Monroe, Crittenden and Arkansas counties. In 1918, he was named district agent, a title he held until his death in the 1950s.

Mary Ray would conduct her outreach efforts in Pulaski, Phillips and St. Francis counties, until  July 1918, when she was promoted to district agent for home demonstration work. According to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas, the promotion would expand “her responsibility to as many counties as emergency wartime funding would support — at least 30 based on her 1918 report.”

Mary Ray’s projects included canning demonstrations, garden clubs and school lunch programs.

She held the post of district agent until her death in 1934.

“We stand on the shoulders of pioneers like Mary Lee McCrary Ray who modeled the way of home demonstrations, strength in adversity and program advocacy,” said Nina Roofe, assistant vice president for family and consumer sciences at the Cooperative Extension Service. “Our classrooms and technology are different today, but our focus on bringing education in everyday language to individuals and families in our communities remains the same.

“We bring financial management, health and nutrition, civil engagement, and more to empower Arkansans to make informed decisions to improve their lives,” Roofe said.

“And as Mary Ray did, our agents engage with their quorum courts and other stakeholders to ensure sustainable funding of programs for future generations,” Roofe said.

The Little Rock Nine

After Mary Ray’s death, Harvey Ray married another home demonstration agent, Julia Miller. The pair raised three children, including Gloria Ray. At 15, in 1957, Gloria Ray was one of the Little Rock Nine denied entry to  Little Rock Central High . President Eisenhower ordered units of the Army’s 101 st  Airborne to the scene and federalized the Arkansas National Guard soldiers that Gov. Orval Faubus sent to the school to prevent integration. The Nine were later escorted into the school by federal troops.

Amy Cofer, an extension program associate for early childhood professional development, will be a tour guide for this house.

“It’s an excellent opportunity for us and the Quapaw Quarter Association to highlight the rich history of the Cooperative Extension Service in the state and remind people we’re still here, providing the same free education to Arkansans,” Cofer said.

Tour information

The  Quapaw Quarter Association’s tour  includes homes in the Dunbar and Governor’s Mansion neighborhoods of Little Rock. Tours run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on May 11-12.  Tickets are $30  in advance, or $40 at the door. Want to volunteer as a tour guide for this home? There’s a  signup page .

Exclusive: Sugarland Shares Memories, Talks Future, Touring With Little Big Town

N o one knows much about the Sugarland/Little Big Town tour, which will kick off in October. Even the artists know little beyond the itinerary, ticket prices, and that The Castellows will open the show. Sugarland’s Kristian Bush recognizes it’s billed as Little Big Town + Sugarland. Yet, the duo’s founder understands a couple of other things, too.

“You can’t win yoga, and I know you can’t win yoga,” Bush says.  “But Jennifer and I will try to win the stage every time. I know we’re bringing it.”

The Take Me Home Tour—named after the groups’ new cover of the Phil Collins song—is 18 dates strong and continues through mid-December. The arena run marks Little Big Town’s 25th anniversary as a group. It also falls on the 20th anniversary of Sugarland’s breakthrough hit, “Baby Girl.” Tickets are on sale now and start at $36.50.

While Little Big Town has been together longer, Sugarland—comprised of Bush and Jennifer Nettles—first enjoyed significant mainstream country radio success. The duo gifted Little Big Town with members’ first wireless packs. They also took them on an arena tour, gave them wardrobe cases to transport their clothes in and spearheaded the Sugarland/Little Big Town/Jake Owen collaboration on “Life In A Northern Town.” The song earned award show nominations from the Country Music Association, the Academy of Country Music and the Recording Academy.

“They’re just lovable people, and we made great music together,” Little Big Town’s Kimberly Schlapman says. “‘Life In A Northern Town’ led us to the Grammys and got a Grammy. We adore them, and the fact that we get to do this again with them is  just going to be incredibly fun.”

Sugarland and Little Big Town Share a Sweet, Unexpected Success Story

“Life In A Northern Town” was never intended to be a radio single – or released to the public. Sugarland took Little Big Town and Jake Owen on their headlining CMT tour in 2007. Sugarland was based in Atlanta, and Atlanta media personality Leslie Fram had just started work at CMT. Because Sugarland and Fram were part of Atlanta’s music scene, they knew Fram loved ’80s music. Sugarland had recently wrapped a tour with Kenny Chesney who taught them to always bring the opener out at the end of the show to share a song. Sugarland, Little Big Town and Owen worked up a cover of Dream Academy’s “Life In A Northern Town” to create that inclusive moment.

At the end of the tour, the artists filmed Fram a thank you video, which was them singing “Life In A Northern Town.”

“It was fun, and it was kind of an esoteric song, but it had this really cool sort of way that the chorus was huge and a bunch of people could sing it,” Bush says. “And by a stroke of fate, but also good luck, she actually put it on television.”

The unexpected collaboration coincided with the stratospheric acceleration of the duo’s career, and radio stations started downloading the song from the internet to play on air. Sugarland began getting inquiries about when it would be released.

Sugarland released the version pulled directly from the live recording of their show.

“It was always a reminder to me how it’s special doing things because they’re fun without an end goal in mind,” Bush says. “There’s no commerce at the end of this conversation. It was just pure joy singing the song and recording it, not because you needed it to be great on a record, but because you wanted to say thank you to somebody who helped you.”

When Bush got the call earlier this year to find a song to help the bands repeat that triumph, he had one thought – impossible.

The path to rerecording “Take Me Home”

He suggested Phil Collins’ “Take Me Home” because he loved the record and the man who produced Bush’s first duo Billy Pilgrim —Hugh Padgham – also produced the original version of the song for Collins. Bush, who co-produced the new “Take Me Home” record with Little Big Town and produces country phenom Megan Moroney, learned a tremendous amount from watching Padgham work.

“He had agreed to let these 22-year-old folk rock kids from Atlanta, Georgia, come to London for a month or two,” Bush recalls of Padgham. “I’m so proud of what I’ve been able to do with what he taught me from a production standpoint.”

Bush hopes Padgham will be proud of the new version of “Take Me Home.”

He presented his “Take Me Home” idea to Nettles and Little Big Town, and everyone agreed.

They unveiled their newest collaboration in April on the CMT Music Awards. Like before, Bush chose the song and CMT helped them launch it. Sharing it with the world was more carefully planned than the bands’ first ’80s collaboration. The groups recorded the song and released it to streaming services a few hours before the award show. They had its namesake tour mapped out. But even in the moments leading up to the performance, Bush says they were still rehearsing the song. Sugarland and Little Big Town had never performed “Take Me Home” in front of people.

“I’m Comfortable With These People”

“It felt very comfortable because I’m very comfortable with those people,” Bush says. “It doesn’t just happen by complete happenstance. We rehearse. But what was fun was watching the habits of professional artists show up. Everyone was concerned.”

Bush remembers Nettles making notes in the notebook on the side table in her hotel room about who sang in what order. Little Big Town’s Jimi Westbrook was singing two different parts, and his wife, Karen Fairchild, offered to cover one of them.

“Everyone was trying to make it work all the way up until five minutes before we walked on stage, even though we all recorded it and we knew it,” he says.

The group of longtime friends delivered one of the most critically acclaimed performances of the night.

“That’s how good all those people are and how much they care about the music,” Bush says. “When you care about your job, you don’t have to take yourself seriously, but you should always take your job seriously. Especially this one because it’s so impossible to get.”

Bush predicts fans should expect more Sugarland/Little Big Town collaborations on the Take Me Home Tour. He doesn’t know what they’ll sing yet, but he is certain of one more fact.

“I can’t imagine that it’s not going to be awesome,” he says.

Central High School National Historic Site and Visitors Center

2120 W Daisy L Gatson Bates Dr.

In the fall of 1957, Little Rock became the symbol of state resistance to school desegregation . Arkansas Governor Orval E. Faubus directly questioned the sanctity of the federal court system and the authority of the United States Supreme Court's desegregation ruling while nine Black high school students sought an education at the all-white Little Rock Central High School.

The controversy in Little Rock was the first fundamental test of the United States' resolve to enforce civil rights in the face of massive southern defiance during the period following the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka decisions. When President Dwight D. Eisenhower was compelled by white mob violence to use federal troops to ensure the rights of Black children to attend the previously all-white school, he became the first president since the post-Civil War Reconstruction period to use federal troops in support of civil rights.

In 1998, President Bill Clinton signed legislation that made the school a National Historic Site to "preserve, protect, and interpret for the benefit, education, and inspiration of present and future generations…its role in the integration of public schools and the development of the civil rights movement in the United States."

Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site is also a stop on the self-guided Little Rock Civil Rights Tour .

Constructed primarily of limestone quarried in Batesville, Arkansas and some Indiana Bedford Limestone, the interior was finished in marble from Vermont, Colorado, and Alabama. The top of the dome is 230 feet above the surrounding ground, and the lantern roof is covered in 18-karat gold leaf. Details include six solid bronze doors purchased from Tiffany's of New York. The Capitol grounds feature a civil rights memorial dedicated to the Little Rock Nine .

“I never thought little ol’ 15-year-old me playing metal guitar in my bedroom would amount to this moment”: Smashing Pumpkins name social media shredder Kiki Wong as new guitarist after 10,000 applications

The popular Instagram guitarist will tour the world with the alt-rock legends from June 2024

Smashing Pumpkins and Kiki Wong

At the beginning of 2024, the Smashing Pumpkins damn-near broke the internet when they announced a worldwide open audition for an additional guitarist to replace the outgoing Jeff Schroeder , resulting in 10,000-plus applications ( this writer included ). Today, the alt-rock icons announced their new touring guitarist: Kiki Wong.

Wong is one of Instagram’s foremost shredders, with 674k followers to her name. She has performed with Taylor Swift, Usher and Bret Michaels, along with notable rock bands including Nylon Pink, Hellfire Heart, and currently, Vigil of War.

Along with a pool of finalists, chosen by frontman Billy Corgan, she auditioned in-person for the touring guitarist spot last month in Los Angeles, and ultimately won out.

Unlike Schroeder, who she replaces, Wong is being billed strictly as an “additional touring guitarist”, rather than a fulltime member of the band. She joins the core SP lineup of guitarist/frontman Corgan, guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, and the live lineup of Jack Bates ( bass ) and Katie Cole (guitar, keys, vocals).

“Reviewing the work of these incredible musicians was a herculean, albeit worthy effort,” said Corgan. “First off, I really want to thank everyone who submitted materials for consideration. It wasn’t an easy decision with how much great guitar playing we were lucky enough to hear and see over the past few months.

“I was a fan of Kiki’s before she submitted her name to be considered – and it’s great that someone of her acumen will be part of our touring family. I can’t wait to hit the road with Kiki as part of our mad circus. It’s definitely an exciting moment for The Smashing Pumpkins to be this busy with touring in 2024. We’ll see you all this summer!”

“It’s been an absolute wild ride, but I am beyond honored and humbled to be chosen to perform alongside some of rock's greatest and most influential musicians of all time,” said lifetime Pumpkins fan Wong.

“I never thought little ol’ 15-year-old me playing metal guitar in my bedroom would amount to this moment. It goes to show hard work and perseverance truly pays off if you’re willing to push through the tough stuff, so never lose hope out there. I am so grateful for this opportunity and can't wait to share the stage with the legendary Smashing Pumpkins!”

Wong’s first show with the band will be at Birmingham Utilita Arena on June 7 during their co-headline tour with Weezer.

The guitarist relayed her guitar journey so far to Guitar World last year , particularly the influence of heavier styles.

“I remember the first time I got into metal,” she recalled. “My brother is 20 months older than me and has always been one of my biggest role models. When I was 12, he showed me Metallica, and I was in awe of Master of Puppets . I hadn't heard anything like it before, and it completely rewired my mind. I knew I had to learn it, but let's just say it took a few more years to get it right [laughs].”
