How the four-piece Australian band went from Mayday Parade-inspired rock to Charlie Puth-produced pop in four albums.

Before they were a multi-platinum selling band with an international fanbase of millions, 5 Seconds of Summer was the angst-driven passion project of four teenage boys in Sydney, Australia.

Guitarists Luke Hemmings and Michael Clifford, bassist Calum Hood, and drummer Ashton Irwin had all been students of the pop punk genre prior to coming together in 2011 – they’d learned about ditching their hometown and the uncertainty of love from Mayday Parade; discovered the art of striking a balance between humor and depth from Blink-182 , and Green Day gave them a crash course in rebellion. These influences – merged with each member’s own individual creativity – created the distinctive 5SOS sound.

In 2013, the group went out on tour with One Direction, delivering feverous, guitar-heavy performances of their independent and unreleased music – the rock show before the pop show. Their 2014 eponymous debut album showed they could hold their own in the pop punk scene, but their predominantly female fanbase and association with boy band culture gave them something to prove.

‘Promiscuous’: The Story Behind Nelly Furtado’s Hit

Their sophomore effort Sounds Good Feels Good (2015) was more rock than pop in hopes of winning over skeptics with louder guitars and heavier percussion. By 2018, the band realized they didn’t have to ditch their rock roots to embrace pop and scored their third No. 1 album with Youngblood . Then, 2020’s CALM struck a perfect middle ground between the two worlds, with the added influence of New Wave, 80s pop, and indie rock.

With four albums now under their belt as songwriters and musicians, 5 Seconds of Summer have nothing left to prove. This is how their biggest singles got them there.

5 Seconds of Summer (2014)

5 Seconds of Summer were introduced to the general public in early 2014 with their debut major label single, “She Looks So Perfect.” Produced by Jake Sinclair ( Fall Out Boy , Panic! at the Disco, New Politics) and Eric Valentine (Smash Mouth, All American Rejects, Taking Back Sunday) and written by Irwin, Clifford, and Sinclair, the high-powered track was the full pop punk package.

There were ripped skinny jeans, a deadbeat town to escape, and youthful animosity towards authority. They hit radio chanting “You look so perfect standing there / In my American Apparel underwear / And I know now that I’m so down” on the guitar-heavy chorus, standing out against the polished pop of Top 40. The song reached No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is certified 2x platinum by the RIAA.

“Pop punk was the quickest, most effective, highly emotional, lyrically convenient music for us to make, and it was the music we understood best,” Irwin told BBC Radio 1 in 2019. They delivered on the highly emotional front with “Amnesia,” the third single from 5 Seconds of the Summer , written by Good Charlotte’s Joel and Benji Madden and produced by Louis and Michael Biancaniello with Sam Watters. The band’s emotive, heartfelt performance on the almost entirely acoustic track was a chance for them to shine as vocalists. The song peaked at No. 16, their highest Hot 100 entry at the time, and is now certified 2x platinum.

Sounds Good Feels Good (2015)

Sounds Good Feels Good ’s lead single “She’s Kinda Hot” was a deeper dive into the pop punk scene, seeing the band team up with producer John Feldmann (All Time Low, Blink-182, The Cab). Clifford and Irwin wrote the gold-certified track with Feldmann and both Madden brothers. It peaked at No. 22 on the Hot 100 and earned them their second MTV Video Music Award.

“She’s Kinda Hot” functioned as a reassuring anthem for 5SOS fans. “They say we’re losers and we’re alright with that / We are the leaders of the not coming backs,” the band chants at full volume over bellowing drums and heavy electric guitar on the chorus. They declared themselves and their fans the “kings and the queens of the new broken scene.”

As a rock group existing in the pop music world, the band also felt a bit like outcasts. In 2015, Clifford told USA Today : “We don’t really have the mind-set of a boy band. Not saying all of them are alike, but we’re not just in this to make some quick cash and get out. We want our fans to stick around for a long time and to evolve musically.”

Youngblood (2018)

Youngblood ’s gold certified lead single “Want You Back” signaled the band’s growth as musicians. They fully embraced pop, but kept their guitars front and center. “It was always going to be a risk to go away, reinvent the band and come back and release this new stuff,” Hood told Billboard . Created with pop producers Andrew Goldstein and Andrew Wells, “Want You Back” saw Hemmings, Hood, and Irwin joined in the writers room by Steve Mac, Asia Whitacre, and J. Kash. The comeback track peaked at No. 61 on the Hot 100, but the biggest hit of 5SOS’s career was soon to come.

Hemmings opens “Youngblood” with the melancholy lyric: “Remember the words you told me / Love me ’til the day I die.” The slight edge in his vocals throughout the song and the embodiment of the push and pull within relationships set the tone for Youngblood as a whole. Held together by Hood’s sleek bass, “Youngblood” showed that 5SOS could inhabit pop radio (where the song reached No. 1) with their new sound and still rock out on stage on tour.

Written by Irwin, Hood, and Hemmings with pop experts Ali Tamposi and producers Andrew Watt (Post Malone, Justin Bieber , Miley Cyrus) and Louis Bell (Halsey, Taylor Swift, Khalid), the song reached No. 7 on the Hot 100 and is certified 2x platinum. It’s also the first 5 Seconds of Summer song to surpass one billion streams.

CALM (2020)

5SOS were only a year out from Youngblood when they released the first single from their fourth studio album CALM in 2019. “Easier” saw the band taking what worked from that era and revitalizing it with new influences and collaborators. The song’s New Wave sound builds around their rhythm section. With Hemmings’ vocals driving the song, there’s an added element of evolution in their vocal production as well.

Familiar with the band’s creative flow, Tamposi, Watt, and Bell return as songwriters and producers – but alongside credits from Clifford, Hood, Hemmings, and Irwin appears new collaborators Ryan Tedder and Charlie Puth.

“We’ve had more time to explore what we actually want from our music as artists,” Irwin told BBC Radio 1. The platinum certified track reached No. 48 on the Hot 100 and set the table for a musical exploration into the sonic influence the band drew from artists like Nine Inch Nails , Depeche Mode, and Tears For Fears throughout CALM .

5 Seconds of Summer’s propensity for staying in sync as the project of four musicians with distinct influences and skills is what has allowed them to consistently reconstruct their sound across their four albums. Learning from their work, rather than being anchored by it, Clifford, Hood, Hemmings, and Irwin are on pace for continued evolution.

5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) are a four piece Australian pop rock band that formed in Sydney, Australia in 2011.

It draws inspiration from pop, pop rock, and pop punk bands like Green Day, Good Charlotte, Nirvana, and Blink-182, blending styles into something completely new with every album.

5 Seconds of Summer was formed in 2011 in Sydney, Australia, by a group of high school friends. The band consists of Luke Hemming on vocals and rhythm guitar, Michael Clifford on lead guitar, Calum Hood on bass, and Ashton Irwin on drums. After posting cover songs on YouTube, the group garnered attention. Later that year, the band played its first show at a local pub.

5 Seconds of Summer released its first EP, Unplugged, in June 2012 through Capitol Records. Despite minimal promotion, the album reached number three on the iTunes chart in Australia. It also made the Top 20 in New Zealand and Sweden. The band’s second EP, Somewhere New, dropped that December. The video for the first single, “Out of My Limit,” received over 100,000 views in the first day.

With this growing fame and success, the members of 5 Seconds of Summer decided to drop out of high school to pursue music. In February 2013, the band joined the hugely popular group One Direction on its Take Me Home Tour as a supporting act. This catapulted the band into international stardom.

During a break on the One Direction tour, 5 Seconds of Summer returned home to play its first local headlining tour. Tickets sold out within minutes, confirming the group’s rising popularity. In November 2013, the band signed to Capitol Records. The following March, it toured with One Direction once again on the Where We Are Tour.

In July 2014, 5 Seconds of Summer released its first self-titled studio album. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and peaked at number one in 13 countries, and produced chart-topping singles like “She Looks So Perfect,” “Don’t Stop,” “Amnesia,” and “Good Girls.”

Later in 2014, 5 Seconds of Summer released a cover of “What I like About You,” by The Romantics. It was the first single from the band’s upcoming live album, LIVESOS, which dropped that December.

5 Seconds of Summer embarked on its first international headlining tour in May 2015. The Rock Out With Your Socks Out Tour took place across Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and North America.

5 Seconds of Summer released its second studio album, Sounds Good Feels Good, in October 2015. The album became its second number one at home and first in the UK. This success was followed up in 2018 with the release of the band’s third studio album, Youngblood. The album produced four singles: “Want You Back,” “Youngblood,” “Valentine,” and “Lie to Me.”

Calm, 5 Seconds of Summer’s fourth studio album, was released in 2020. It was praised by critics for its mature lyrics and sound. Thanks to a shipping error, over 10,000 copies of the album were released early in the U.S. This happy accident caused the album to chart a week before it was supposed to come out. It also earned the band its fourth number-one album in Australia. This made 5 Seconds of Summer the second band in the country’s history to have its first four studio albums debut at number one.

In 2022, 5 Seconds of Summer released its fifth studio album, 5SOS5. The band is currently promoting the album on its Take My Hand World Tour. Catch its shows live now through December.

Live reviews

The Sounds Live Feels Live concert here in Cologne, Germany was the best concert I've ever went to! Also, it was the best day of my life.

I had a standing soundcheck ticket and I went to the venue very early so that I can be close to 5SOS. And guess what? I ACTUALLY WAS IN THE FRONT ROW!

First of all I want to say something to the Soundcheck. If you think about experiencing soundcheck, you imagine a lot of stuff and so did I! I thought it would be just amazing and personal... and it was! But even more amazing than I thought. The feeling you have when you're so close to them and there aren't that many people and you just get to look at them and hear them talking about so many things is just unbelievable!

5SOS said that the questions were all very good. (For example, "What does happiness mean to you?" - they said a lot to this question though.)

IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO GO TO A 5SOS SOUNDCHECK, DO IT! THE MONEY IS WORTH IT, I PROMISE!

As I mentioned before, I was in front row and I can happily say that Í didn't get pushed or anything during the concert.

It was the third time seeing them and definitely the best. It's awesome to see how much they've grown and how far they've come! Their voices sound so much better and they seem to be so much more confident on stage than they used to be in 2014 when I first saw them.

My personal highlight of the concert was to hear Jet Black Heart live because that's my favorite song by 5sos. Especially the lyrics "The blood in my veins is made up of mistakes." mean a lot to me because I made a lot of mistakes in my life but without these mistakes, I wouldn't be the person I am today.

As you might know, there's this worldwide project for SLFL going on where you write down " I Am..." on a poster and say something preferable meaningful (if you want, something that 5sos helped you with.) So I wrote down " I am a girl whose blood in her veins is made up of mistakes" and during the chorus I think Luke read it and when Calum's part came on, Luke was on this kind of 'catwalk' (I don't know how you call that part of the stage haha I'm sorry) and that was where I was standing and yeah so when Calum started singing "The blood in my veins..", Luke was right in front of me and looked at me while singing this part! I'm so happy that I recorded this so everytime I'm sad, I'm just gonna watch the video! Just thinking about it makes me very emotional..

5SOS are so talented, they do not only sing great, they all also play instruments! And believe me, going to one of their concerts is such a great experience with so much fun and a lot of emotions.

Oh my god. Should I say more? It was overwhealming I had such good sits but holy cow, if you think they're all cute, you should see them in person. First of all Luke is JUST LEGS AND HAIR. Ashton HAS SUCH HUGE ARMS LIKE WOW. Calum is just pretty, he can't help it, he's just pretty and his veins when he plays the bass is just the best thing in the world. But I am missing someone, MR Michael Gordon Clifford. Everyone calls him the ugly one, or rat, ALL THE TIME. Well guess what, HE IS THE HOTTEST ONE FROM THE 4 OF THEM. I SWEAR TO GOD MICHAEL IS JUST MADE BY THE HANDS OF JESUS. He is even paler than he looks in the photos and his lips are SO RED, and then he has this amazing Green eyes you want to look at them all day and never sleep again. Anyway, they all seriously know how to rock those instruments. Ashton slams his drums like it's the last time he's ever gonna play. Michael is a master in the guitar, he was literally meant to be with a guitar in his hands. Luke plays amazing and he sings like an angel that fell from heaven and Calum beats the crap out of his bass. Michael was jumping during most of the songs but like jumping while playing the guitar while throwing his long legs at the air while turning in circles, he was just driving himself crazy. I felt the concert was short but when I counted the number of songs they sang it was pretty good actually, 17 songs. THEY SOUND EVEN BETTER LIVE THAN IN THE STUDIO VERSIONS OF THEIR SONGS. It's mind blowing how real they are. No autotune. Nothing. They're just genuine and unique. At the end Ashton threw his drum sticks at the crowd and Michael threw his guitar picks and the towels they used to dry the sweat and a wáter bottle. They thanked us so much and said that they're probably coming to Mexico next year again in a bigger place if posible. And I just can't wait to see them again. They rocked the living crap out of the stage and I couldn't be prouder because you know you're succesfull when you come from the other side of the world at the age of 18 (ash 20) and sold out 2 dates IN MEXICO CITY. I feel like a proud mom. Anyway, all you need to know is that 5 Seconds Of Summer is one of the few actually genuine and talented bands that don't need an extra band to play for them or don't need to fix their voices in their songs, or don't need to have 5 perfumes and 10 albums to be succesfull, they're real. So yeah, I had an amazing time and everyone should know what's like to see 5SOS live. Genuine.

5 Seconds Of Summer/ One Direction, All of the members of 5 Seconds of Summer have so much talent, from the ability to sing, play acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, to the drums. These Australian lads are funny, down to earth, and so in touch with what making and performing music is really about. I love them! They talked about how much they love Canada and some things that stood out for them, but most of all they said their thank yous.. Which really meant something. Luke Hemmings (18) is the lead vocals and lead guitarist. Ashton Irwin (20) drummer and vocals. Calum Hood (18) vocals and bass guitar. Michael Clifford (18) vocals and electric/ acoustic guitar. They are all so talented! They put on an amazing show!

One Direction,

I have been a fan of One Direction for 2 years, everyday of those 2 years wishing to see them in concert. When I finally got the chance to fly from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Toronto to see them play at the Rogers Center.. I was ecstatic! The show kept you on your feet from beginning, to the end. They had all kinds of cool lights and attractions on their stage that kept your eyes totally fixed on them! As well as huge screens to capture the boys up close and so that the stadium could better see them. By far, the biggest and loudest concert I have ever been to.. But absolutely amazing! I would do it again in a heartbeat.

They went from The X Factor, to a stadium tour that sold out the day after the tickets went on sale! These boys have been a huge hit for 4 years! Let's hope for 4 more amazing years.

I reccomend seeing these boys! (5 Seconds Of Summer, One Direction)

They can REALLY sing!! They always let the crowd sing with them in some parts of their songs and it sounds incredible!

I love them so much :)

5 seconds of summer changed my life on 4.25.14. Their shows were so powerful and inspiring to me and I think everybody should know that. For some bands, the way they sound on the radio doesn't sound like it does in concert, live. 5 Seconds Of Summer sound EXACTLY the same live and that's an amazing thing to do. They may not realize it but it's amazing the way they can just sing a couple songs and have millions and millions of fans head over heels for them. When I went to their concert I remember that Ashton just walked around the stage after a couple songs, talked to us about how inspiring we were to them and then pointed to me and I just couldn't stop screaming. After that when he was walking back, he did a cartwheel and I remember how loud it was in there because everybody was so excited. The thing that I want most right now at this point in my life is to go and meet/see them on my birthday 8.24.14, which is also the date they are performing at the MTV Video Music Awards, and if I actually win tickets I will be completely honored to meet Luke, Ashton, Micheal, and Calum. I know it's hard for them to be moving place to place to place but I honestly think they are having the best time anyone can ever have at this point of their lives. If people are wondering if they should see them live in concert then DO IT! THEY ARE AMAZING PLUS Y.O.L.O AND WHY NOT SEE THEM. I hope whoever reads this will be as excited i am right now just thinking about them. With 5 Seconds Of Summer, NEVER assume they are a boy band because their not, their a pop rock band and the best you with ever see perform.

I went to the Sydney show of the Rock Out With Your Socks Out Tour 2015, on 20 June 2015.

I arrived at the venue, Allphones Arena around 5pm, I bought merch (tour t-shirt) at one of the many merch stands situated around the outside of the arena. The venue opened around 5:30pm but I waited around outside, talking to people and went in around 6:30pm.

I was there with friends so we got a bite to eat, doors opened at 7:00pm. We entered the arena around 7:15pm and got settled in our AMAZING seats. Music was been played and also the band 'Hey Violet' was being advertised and their music videos were being played.

State Champs, the opening act came on at 7:30pm and completely rocked out with their original songs. Their set finished at 8:00pm.

5 Seconds of Summer came on at 8:30pm. They began with 'End Up Here'. The crowd was pumping and really excited.

The crowd was jamming with 5SOS, the vibe and atmosphere was amazing.

At one point, Harry (Ashton's little brother) was invited onto stage and he completely shredded Michael's guitar, it was sick!

The crowd was at its loudest for their biggest hits; 'She Looks So Perfect', 'Don't Stop', Their cover of Green Day's 'American Idiot' and of course, the tearjerker, 'Amnesia'.

All in all, I had a blast and I'm sure everyone in that arena felt the same. It was one of the best nights of my life.

I would definitely recommend 5 Seconds of Summer in concert. So if you're contemplating whether or not to buy tickets to a show of theirs, stop, don't hesitate and BUY THOSE TICKETS to HAVE THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE!!

After the consert i was left with mixed feelings. DON BROCO blew my mind! Before the show i had only ever heard their music on youtube and they reminded me of Lower than Atlantis.(Not that thats a bad thing, i love LTA) But because of the fact that i didnt know what to expect, and that i had never heard of the band before, my expectations were not that high. But at the show i loved it; their energy, wicked sound, the vocals were awesome(one of my friend compared the singers abilities to Hayley Williams`) and overall the band seemed to love what they were doing - unlike a certain headlining band.

As usual the songs were performed to "perfection" and the screaming girls were ecstatic. Still something that everyone of them but Michael G Clifford on lead guitar seemed to be missing, was the energy and joy on stage. Calum just seemed plain sad to the point where my thoughts during the show was;it looks like he needs a hug, should i go up there and hug him(i stood in GC2). Luke seemed tired and i was actually waitng for him to yawn loudly into the mic. Ashton seemed annoyed or mad, and to me and my friends we were just waiting for him to take a bieber and run off stage.

But all in all i loved their sound even though all that came out of luke, calum and ashton seemed rehearsed and robotic, i loved the bigscreen, the songs that were played inbetween the sets and before the shows, and i loved DON BROCO sooooo much. So thanks 5sos for rocking and that was my experience.

The 5 Seconds of Summer Show was nothing but purely magical. I don’t have words to describe it properly. But I’ve never seen an Artist as passionate about anything as those four men on that small Stage that was full of Energy the whole show. They didn’t seem tired from touring many months they just put on the best show they could for you, they surely did without a doubt. You could feel the connection between the Artists and the fans that was unbelievable. That feeling of love and comfort wouldn’t leave the whole time it seriously felt like home. We (the fans) sang every little word back, we danced, smiled, laughed, screamed, cried and had the best time of their life. It made me feel alive it made me feel happy and welcome and I felt like I’m not being judged. I felt free. I could feel that they put everything they had in every single song and you could feel how much it meant to them. It was for sure the best Concert I’ve ever been to. It was a truly beautiful night with a whole bunch of different mix of emotions. I’d definitely recommend for anyone to go to a 5 Seconds of Summer show. No matter if you’re a fan or not, no matter how old you are or if you’d never listen to they’re music before. You won’t regret it. Their music and music genre is something special and out of this world. 5 Seconds of Summer will make sure you have a brilliant time and you’ll definitely enjoy it.

The concert was incredible. I had the VIP Soundcheck Experience so I was one of a couple hundred fans who got the opportunity to be a part of this private "hang out" with 5sos. The band played "If You Don't Know", answered some questions asked by the fans and then ended with their new single "Girls Talk Boys".

For the concert itself, Roy English was the opening act and he was pretty great. When 5sos came on stage, the energy in the arena increased and there was a smile on everyone's face. About two-thirds through the show, Ashton invited everyone to fill in the gaps on the arena floor. He said to jump the barricades if they had to, so the majority of the audience moved closer. The floor section had basically turned into a mosh pit.

After playing "What I Like About You" Luke got a bit annoyed at security for moving fans back to their seats, as the whole point was for everyone to be up front and have the best experience possible.

Usually the band would go off stage for a couple minutes and then come back on for the encore, but because of the situation, this time they were forced to continue on.

I'm sure that they got in trouble for breaking rules, but it was definitely worth it.

They made a large arena feel just as personal as a small venue, and each person at the show had the time of their life.

This was certainly one concert I'll never forget.

Last night was (as Michael would say) F***ING AWESOME!

JESSARAE was an absolutely amazing support act, will definitely be looking out for his headline tour dates. For those of you who don't know who he is, he is Steven R McQueen's (Jeremy in The Vampire Diaries and Steve McQueen's nephew) half brother.

He has such an incredible singing ability and great stage pressence.

His original songs Nobody's Human and Stand In The Rain both had the crowd going.

When 5 Seconds of Summer came on stage, the heat and noise level rose.

The opening song was so moving, which was followed by all their hits as well as favourites from both albums, as well as songs such as Heartache On The Big Screen and Disconnected.

As with all Birmingham concerts, there was many laughs. With Michael challenging Calum to performing one of the songs with a bottle cap, instead of his plectrum.

And Michael coming up with a song invovling the city's name. (Last year they sang a song entitled Birmingham Smells Like Ham) this year the song was I Shaved My Beard For Birmingham, (which was to honour the fact Michael has finally shaved his beard.

These boys are all very talented I love it when Michael and Luke play each others guitars. :)

Can't wait for next year boys. BEST NIGHT EVER! And that Ain't No Lie #AintNoLie #SLFLBirmingham #SoundsLiveFeelsLive

5 Seconds of Summer is a pop-rock (wanna be punk rock) band that consists of Luke Hemmings (guitar, vocals), Michael Clifford (guitar, vocals), Calum Hood (bass, vocals), and Ashton Irwin (drums, vocals). You can expect a very fun show with loads of energy. 5SOS are probably better live than on their album. They always interact with the crowd to make sure the fans are having the time of their lives.

Be prepared to be amazed by these young lads' talents. By the time you leave the concert, you'll have the biggest smile on your face, but you won't be able to hear a thing due to the fact you and everyone else in the venue will be screaming so loud.

I've now seen 5SOS three times in concert and I will be attending two more concerts this year. Every time I see them live, they're even better than before. These cheeky lads will play a catchy tune, like the debut single, "She Looks So Perfect", that just makes you want to dance. Or they'll play a slow song, such as, "Amnesia", that makes your heart flutter because, I mean c'mon, who wouldn't want to see these lovely boys singing about never wanting to ever lose you.

5 Seconds of Summer are trying to bring new music to the world and they're doing an absolutely amazing job at it. They are currently touring with One Direction on their stadium tour.

About 5 seconds of summer.

In a few short years, 5 Seconds of Summer evolved from a charming pop-punk band to one of the more formidable forces in rock and pop. Formed in Sydney, Australia, by college friends Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood, and Ashton Irwin, 5SOS first got a foothold in 2011 with a series of acoustic covers posted to YouTube—a path that helped them build their ravenous fan base from the ground up. After a profile-boosting tour with One Direction in 2013, they released their self-titled debut album, which combined the punchy, hook-heavy sound of bands like blink-182 and My Chemical Romance with a strong pop gloss, topping charts in 14 countries almost instantly. In 2015, they followed with Sounds Good Feels Good, and then they made a big stylistic leap for 2018’s anthemic, dance-oriented Youngblood. On one hand, 5SOS are part of a lineage that dates back to (and before) The Beatles: four charismatic, fresh-faced guys out having fun. But flipping a narrative that could easily turn saccharine and bubblegum, 5SOS's youthful, playful appeal is decidedly edgier. They also represent a different shift in pop-punk's audience, from the dude-heavy ’90s to a more inclusive, female-friendly 2010s—one the band has embraced with good faith and open hearts. Reflecting on their bond with one another, frontman Hemmings told Apple Music, “To have people in the same position as you is very comforting. And to know that however you’re feeling, there’s three other people who have felt the same way. I don’t know how to say it without getting too emotional. This is my whole life; these are my brothers.”

Luke Hemmings: Unveiling the ‘boy’ Within

In his second solo project, the 5 seconds of summer frontman confronts existential questions with a childlike curiosity.

Luke Hemmings

On his second solo project, Luke Hemmings is really getting to the heart of things.

Now 27, the singer-songwriter, best known as the frontman of Sydney pop-rock band 5 Seconds of Summer , has hurdled the challenges of going solo and is finding his stride without his bandmates. Even though his lyrics sometimes wander in a stream-of-consciousness style, he’s polished them up to deliver a bigger emotional punch with fewer words.

“I write in short bursts, over different periods of life,”  Hemmings tells Rolling Stone AU/NZ over Zoom from his home studio in LA,  just days before unveiling his new EP , boy . “Sometimes I’ll start a song and then come back to it months later to finish it. But lately, I’ve been trying to get across more emotion with less words. In the past, I’ve tended to overcomplicate things lyrically by saying too much. A lot of these new songs aim to be as concise as possible.”

Comparisons to the trajectory of Harry Styles are inevitable, another artist who transitioned from a mega boy band, One Direction .  Hemmings has spent the last 12 years building 5SOS into a global touring giant, performing to arena-sized audiences across five studio albums.

Now, he’s confidently building on his solo path, with boy following the positively received When Facing The Things We Turn Away From , which topped the ARIA charts upon release in 2021.

Hemmings’ new EP highlights his skill for introspective and melancholic pop, all seven tracks reflecting on the complexities of his late twenties. Now married to songwriter Sierra Deaton and contemplating parenthood, he’s mining his past struggles for inspiration to chart his future.

“As I get older and [I’m] thinking about having kids at some point, I’m reflecting on myself at that age, still being that struggling boy deep down inside,” Hemmings reflects. “There can be a tendency, especially for men as they get older, to bottle things up inside and not address them until it’s maybe past the point of no return.

“This EP is about uncovering emotions or experiences from my younger years, getting in touch with that inner boy, that inner child, so to speak, in order to become a fully realised version of myself.”

With a massive fanbase, Hemmings keenly acknowledges the apprehensions that always surround a lead singer’s solo endeavour, but he has reassuring words. “ They’re obviously my stories but written to be an overview of human experience. I really wanted to ride that line between sadness and happiness and stay in that melancholy place. I hope people can connect with it in their own way.”

Armed with a couple more years of wisdom since his debut, Hemmings brings a fresh maturity to boy , showcasing his most refined songwriting and vocals that shine. Tracks like “Shakes” lay bare his loneliness with a simple, cathartic refrain, while the opener “I’m Still Your Boy” tenderly seeks forgiveness for dwelling in the past. “Close My Eyes”, a standout boasting a towering chorus reminiscent of The War on Drugs, dives deep into late-night reflections, pondering “Where is the time I lost?”

Reuniting with producer Sammy Witte, known for his collaborations with industry heavyweights like Harry Styles and SZA ,  Hemmings credits their chemistry for pushing the EP’s sound into richer territory, drawing influence from eclectic influences such as LCD Soundsystem, Cocteau Twins, Blur, and The Verve.

“The first time around, we felt like we were really experimenting, unsure where the sound would take us or if I’d even do a solo album. But with boy , I had less anxiety because I knew we could nail the sound I was after,” Hemmings explains.

“I wanted to take some of the stuff I really loved about the first album, like “Starting Line” and “A Beautiful Dream” and even “Bloodline”, and push it a bit further and use new influences from some other artists that we hadn’t tapped into before,” he adds.

The release of boy kicks off a monumental year for Hemmings as he prepares for his most extensive solo tour to date. Despite only a few solo performances in LA last year, he approaches the prospect of touring on his own again with newfound confidence. “ I’ve never done a big tour on my own before, but I’m excited to perform the songs live and embrace the experience,” he shares. “It’s going to be scary, but it’ll be good.”

Come June, Hemmings will return to Australia for a triumphant homecoming , with performances scheduled in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, and the boy from NSW says he’s especially excited about a two-night run at Enmore Theatre.

Despite any lingering self-doubt, Hemmings is learning to trust his instincts more, recognising that the present moment is where he needs to be.

“There’s still anxiety about putting anything out, whether alone or with others,” he concludes. “But you just have to break down the walls and take it as it comes.”
