If you’ve been shopping for a new travel trailer with bunkhouse features, you’re in the right place. We’ve compiled a list of some of the best bunkhouse travel trailers available so you and your family can hit the road in style.

But what exactly is a bunkhouse travel trailer, and what should you consider when shopping for a new one? Let’s learn more about this unique style of travel trailer so you can get your questions answered.

Already know you want a bunkhouse travel trailer?

Check out the table of contents below to jump ahead and see all of our favorites:

What Is A Bunkhouse Travel Trailer?

A bunkhouse travel trailer essentially means you are purchasing a style of trailer with bunk beds inside. Bunkhouse travel trailers also imply secondary living space, where bunk beds and couches create a unique second living space inside the RV.

Bunkhouse travel trailers are often larger than traditional travel trailers, given the need for extra sleeping space. These types of RVs are perfect for large families or groups of people, especially those with younger children comfortable with bunk bed sleeping arrangements.

However, you may be interested in a bunkhouse travel trailer whether or not you have kids. They often have unique layouts and ample living space you wouldn’t normally get in a standard travel trailer layout. Some bunkhouse travel trailers even have two bathrooms, which I find a game-changer when multiple people are camping on board!

What To Consider In A Bunkhouse Travel Trailer?

Wondering what you should consider in a bunkhouse travel trailer? Here are some expert tips and pointers to keep in mind while you shop for your new RV.

Sleeping Arrangements

The most important consideration for your new bunkhouse travel trailer is knowing how many people can sleep in it, and how many people on average you expect to travel with.  Bunkhouse travel trailers truly maximize sleeping arrangements, and some RVs can even have bunk beds that are three beds tall!

You’re most likely interested in this style of travel trailer because of its high sleep capacity.  However, when an RV tells you how many people can sleep inside, this doesn’t mean everyone is sleeping comfortably. If you plan on traveling with more adults than kids, you should make sure the sleeping arrangements suit everyone accordingly.

Number Of Bathrooms

Traveling with a large group of people may mean you need multiple bathrooms in your bunkhouse travel trailer. Thankfully, this is a common request and most RV manufacturers have already planned for this when designing the layout of bunkhouse rigs. One bathroom is standard in just about any travel trailer unless you are shopping around for a smaller model with only a wet bath or no bathroom at all.

However, many large travel trailers or fifth wheels offer multiple bathroom situations.  You may not get a full secondary bath, but a half-bath onboard is possible, which typically includes a sink and an additional toilet. Sometimes, this is all you need when camping with a group of people or family members.

Style And Overall Aesthetics

Bunkhouses are fun for the whole family, especially when you consider both the interior and exterior style and look of the trailer. While most RVs have a special sort of ugly style to them , you may find a bunkhouse that makes you feel cool.

Many travel trailers have multiple interior design options, and you can further customize your look and feel with your own personal touches. There’s nothing better than an RV living area that feels lived-in rather than brand new and sterile.

Bunkhouse Layout

The layout of your travel trailer is key no matter what style of rig you’re looking at, but this is especially the case with bunkhouse travel trailers. After all, the layout will be greatly affected by large bunkhouse living areas. Many travel trailers situate the bunk room toward the back of the travel trailer to allow further privacy and separation from other parts of the rig.

This can be especially valuable if you plan on traveling with a large group of children, as they can have their own space.  However, no two travel trailers are the same, and you should make sure the layout works best for you and your family as well as any additional guests. Privacy is key for a bunkhouse travel trailer, but it’s wise to pay attention to the other living areas as well.

Total Length

Bunkhouse travel trailers can get pretty large, which is why you should pay attention to the overall length of your new rig. While the extra square footage may be necessary to allow everyone to come along on vacation, you may be surprised to hear that the length of your rig matters.

Many national and state parks have RV length rules or limits in place depending on the location and style of the park. This could be a wake-up call for those of you with rigs over 35 feet long- and most bunkhouse rigs are this large.  However, these rules are different from park to park, and your bunkhouse travel trailer may do just fine on your travels. I find it’s always a good idea to call ahead before making reservations at campgrounds.

Weight

As previously mentioned, most bunkhouse travel trailers are mighty big. This means it’s vital to pay close attention to various travel trailer weights and the overall weight limit of your tow vehicle for optimum safety. Y ou should never shop for a brand-new rig without first knowing what tow vehicle you plan on using and how much weight it can carry.

Since travel trailers are lighter than ever these days, you may be surprised how heavy some of these rigs actually are. Your tow vehicle may be able to handle the RV model you’re looking at, no problem. If not, it’s best to upgrade your tow vehicle or look at more compact, lightweight travel trailer options.

Budget

Finally, the last thing you should consider when shopping for a new travel trailer, bunkhouse or otherwise, is your budget. Travel trailers can vary widely in their cost, depending on amenities and the overall luxury of the rig.

You can easily create a budget and anticipate spending, but be sure to take a look at any non-standard features or options you can install on your new travel trailer. Many optional features are considered necessary by RVers, such as auto leveling and solar panels, but they will increase the overall expense substantially.

Benefits Of A Bunkhouse Travel Trailer

Curious to learn more about bunkhouse travel trailers? Here is a list of some potential benefits opting for a bunkhouse travel trailer can bring. Remember, it may be worth considering purchasing a good-quality used RV if you’re on a tight budget. My rig was an absolute steal secondhand, and I don’t regret a single thing about not buying a brand-new rig!

Many Different Layouts

After years of looking at different RV layouts and setups, bunkhouse travel trailers have some of the most unique ones I’ve ever seen. This is likely due to the creativity involved when adding an additional sleeping area.

You can expect a lot of unique features while shopping for bunkhouse travel trailers, and it may make these rigs appealing to you if you hadn’t considered this style of travel trailer before. It’s definitely worth looking at these travel trailers for this reason alone!

Room For The Whole Family

One of the main reasons many people choose a bunkhouse travel trailer is because they have room for the whole family, or perhaps room for an entire group of friends. These travel trailers maximize sleeping arrangements so you can bring as many people along as possible.

Again, this may not be ideal for a group of adults, especially those not expecting to share a room. However, that’s partially what camping is about, and bunkhouse travel trailers still ensure everyone is comfortable, even if they are sharing a bunk bed.

Space Saving Bunks

Speaking of sleeping arrangements, bunkhouses are designed with space-saving bunk beds so you can maximize both the guest sleeping arrangements and the overall storage space. Even if you don’t plan on feeling every single bunk bed onboard your new travel trailer, you still have ample bunks to use for storage or other purposes. You won’t have to worry about leaving anything at home if you buy one of these rigs!

Ample Storage For Cargo

Whether you plan on using the bunk beds for storage or require storage elsewhere, bunkhouse travel trailers give you tons of storage, both inside and out. This can be incredibly beneficial, especially when traveling with large groups of people who will each have their own belongings.

While a bunkhouse-style travel trailer may not be a first choice if you plan on living full-time in your rig , you may find this layout works well for you in terms of having enough room for clothes, personal effects, food storage, and more.

Extra RV Amenities

Even the most basic of bunkhouse travel trailers have a decent amount of RV amenities that you may not initially expect. If you’re able to purchase a more luxury travel trailer, then expect even more amenities than a simpler, budget-friendly model.

For example, you can expect plush mattresses, additional entertainment centers, at least a 50 amp RV service, and much more with just about any bunkhouse trailer purchase. The main living area may have theater seating, and your dining area may also be upgraded to accommodate additional people.

The list doesn’t stop there, but it will depend on the individual travel trailer you’re looking at for what sort of amenities you’ll receive. If you have something specific in mind, the RV manufacturer will no doubt tell you whether or not it’s possible.

Privacy From The Kids

Many RVers purchase bunkhouse travel trailers so they have ample space for the kids to hang out in. This gives adults privacy, and also some separation from their children while everyone is hanging out inside the rig.

While you can always just send the kids outside, this isn’t always an option, especially when camping in inclement weather. A bunkhouse travel trailer can make camping trips all the more restful and peaceful with a dedicated space for the kids!

10 Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Ready to take a look at some of the best bunkhouse travel trailers available on the market today? Here are our top seven choices, full of information so you can make an informed decision and get started on your RVing journey!

Best Overall: Forest River Heritage Glen

Forest River makes some fantastic rigs, and the Heritage Glen is no exception. Available in both a hyper-lyte and classic trailer model with various floorplans, it’s easy to find a Heritage Glen to suit every RVer out there! Five of the multiple floorplans feature innovative bunkhouse arrangements, which is not only impressive but rarely found in the travel trailer world!

No one has to feel left out, as Forest River has made it effortless for the whole family to jump on board. The Heritage Glen is c hock full of features, some of which include high-quality herringbone-style vinyl flooring, hardwood cabinetry, and an actual porcelain toilet. Yes, I’m honestly not kidding! This is a trailer with a perfect blend of functionality and luxury, which is what I want, living full-time on the road.

This travel trailer is built with opulence in mind from start to finish. The bunkhouse models on this rig have double-bed stackable bunks, providing sleeping areas for several people – some models have two sets of bunk beds!  This particular rig is built wider to accommodate the extra bunks, as well as also being equipped with extra large pass-through storage compartments. This may make the Wildwood Heritage Glen a little trickier to drive , but any nerves will be obliterated after a few drives!

Not only is this travel trailer built with gorgeous finishing touches and convenient features, but it’s also bursting with luxury on the interior too. The electric fireplace is a promise for cozy winter evenings, and the unique peninsula kitchen is bursting with countertop space and panoramic windows so I can admire the finest views of nature. There’s also a family-sized dinette to enjoy, along with convertible furniture, a half bath, and an outdoor dog hitching station complete with safety mechanisms to keep fluffy friends safe too.

Best For Large Families: Jayco Eagle

Towable by most half-ton trucks and SUVs, the Jayco Eagle has two awesome bunkhouse-style floorplans, which bring the sleeping capabilities of this trailer to an incredible 10 people! Jayco is a popular name in the RV world, which is no surprise as their rigs boast top-quality construction and customer support.

Jayco’s warranties help calm any nerves for new RVers, and purchasing quality-made rigs results in happy campers. The Jayco Eagle is ideal for large families who need ample space both for sleeping and using a trailer in the best way possible. With bunkhouse options, everyone can sleep easily, and since the Eagle varies in length from 34′ 10″ to 38′ 9″, there’s ample space to keep things airy inside.

The overall length of each Eagle floorplan is pretty long, especially for first-time towing, but some might say it’s best to jump in the deep end! I would definitely advise taking some practice tows first, though, as it’s always better to be safe rather than sorry! For those with a tow car able to handle the Eagle, t he interior design is truly where Jayco shines.

They offer all-wood cabinetry, specialty laminate flooring, several windows to flood the space with natural light, and quality convertible furniture for sleeping multiple people. Jayco constructs their rigs on a lightweight but sturdy aluminum frame which helps keep things lightweight. The fiberglass molded walls and roof are also lightweight, meaning less stress and strain on the tow vehicle.

The bunkhouse floor plans have exterior kitchens so I can enjoy the great outdoors for the entirety of my camping trip. While there’s ample living space inside the travel trailer, I like knowing I don’t have to solely spend all of my time inside! The perks found in this travel trailer are too many to list, from a second ducted AC to a power and auto leveling jack system to bring ultimate convenience to every campground trip!

Lightest Weight: Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite

It’s possible to find a bunkhouse travel trailer that doesn’t weigh too much, and the Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite is well worth a close look. This particular model of travel trailer is fantastic for several reasons, not just its lightweight nature and 13 floorplans! Each floorplan ranges in length from 25′ 6″ to 34′ 5″ making the Apex Ultra-Lite a great fit for a wide range of avid campers!

Out of all of the floorplans, seven have bunk bed options, allowing families to take vacations in style and comfort, all inside a lightweight rig! The largest bunkhouse floor plan weighs less than 6,000 pounds so even modest cars and SUVs should be able to tow this Coachmen rig .  While the interior design seems a little beige, all of the cabinetry and countertops are made from quality materials, and it only takes the addition of some decorative belongings to spruce things up a bit!

You can bet these fixtures will last the lifetime of the rig, even if they may need a bit of help in bringing some color and personality. Coachmen is a division of Forest River, which means the construction of each bunkhouse travel trailer will be solid. All of the walls are made from well-insulated Azdel and bonded fiberglass so no matter the season, the Apex Ultra-Lite can tackle it!

This rig also comes complete with double or full-sized bunk beds making it possible to sleep a large group of people on board. Some of the floor plans also have exclusive master suites with walk-around queen beds which is a piece of luxury I miss from living in a traditional home! There are solar panels and solar prep as standard, though I think some of the non-standard features are worth a look too.

Some of these options include dark and frameless tinted windows, additional amps, a second AC unit, and theater seating.  Coachmen will also back your purchase with a fantastic warranty and owner’s club. If you are worried about being able to tow a bunkhouse travel trailer, you don’t have to worry anymore with this lightweight model!

Travel Trailer With Multiple Bunk Beds: Dutchmen Astoria

Speaking of multiple bunk beds, the Dutchman Astoria is another fantastic model for catering to various sleeping needs from small families to large groups of friends. This Dutchmen can sleep a maximum of 11 people, depending on the floorplan of course! There are 15 floorplans in total, measuring in length from 29′ 11″ to 42′ 5″, meaning I can choose a size best suited to my towing ability and storage situation!

The Astoria offers four different bunkhouse models, and all of them offer a multiple bunkbed scenario. Creating sleeping areas for the kids or friends coming along for a weekend adventure means quality time spent together for everyone.  Safety is always the number one priority for me, and so I love that Dutchmen have loaded their rigs with safety features.

Quality steel frames, a power tongue jack, and heavy-duty tires all work together to create a rugged camper that’s reliable, secure, and durable. The interior of the Dutchmen Astoria is lovely, with many homey features, including an electric fireplace and pantry storage in the kitchen . Personally, I find stainless steel appliances have an unbeatable classic look, so the kitchen in this rig is perfect for my tastes. Paired with the quality backsplash the kitchen is easy to clean and a joy to spend time in.

This rig doesn’t just look good, but it functions well too, partly thanks to the standard 50 amp service of the Astoria. Having enough power on board is essential for appliances such as microwaves or AC units, and 50 amps is a solid amount to start off with. I like the contemporary feel of this rig, with the intricate arched ceiling and overall modern design. The kitchen is clean and white, but I think adding a little color would really help bring the inside to life even more!

The larger models of the Dutchmen Astoria may be too big for some to handle, but the smaller models are well worth considering, and with several bunkhouse options available, there’s a good shot this rig could be the right fit for you! Dutchmen also offer many different warranty options as well as a comprehensive customer service line, so I can have all of my questions answered with ease.

Best For The Pets: Coachmen Northern Spirit

The Coachmen Northern Spirit is a fantastic rig for the entire family, including furry friends. They have many classy and exclusive features available onboard this rig, especially in the bunkhouse models. I’d be lost if I couldn’t bring my pup along for RVing antics, so the Northern Spirit is an ideal rig for me and my partner! With six different bunkhouse options to choose from, the Northern Spirit has an array of layouts for all kinds of RVing groups.

Not only do some models have bathtubs and double bunks, but there are dedicated pet features so furry friends can be just as comfortable too! Some of these features include built-in food dishes, an outdoor hitching post for a dog leash, and an outdoor shower complete with a doggy bath area. The exterior of this rig continues to impress, with powered awnings and exterior LED lighting. As for the interior, the Northern Spirit is a good-looking rig on the inside and outside!

Floorplan dependant, this bunkhouse trailer has a spacious kitchen, a bar-style breakfast nook, and even theater seating for ultimate comfort. The interior also features multiple bunk beds along with a master bedroom so my partner and I can have some privacy.  I’m impressed by the volume of standard features, such as a detachable power cord, a solar panel with room to spare, and exterior speakers so I can bring the party outside during the summer.

The 50 amp electrical service and secondary AC unit in the master suite mean comfort even during the summer. No matter how hot it gets outside, I like that I can keep the entire travel trailer cool using this simple add-on. Like the other Coachmen model on this list, the interior design may be a little bland for some tastes, but nothing I don’t think some throws and cushions couldn’t sort out!

Best For Entertaining: Palomino Puma

Palomino claims to offer the most bunkhouse travel trailer options in the industry, and I’m starting to see why. The Palomino Puma has 31 different floorplans across both the travel trailer and fifth wheel models, with an astonishing 14 layouts featuring bunk beds! The Puma is a beauty inside and out, offering ample pass thru storage, sturdy fiberglass exterior walls, and power awnings with LED lighting.

I appreciate the safety step as I can sometimes be a bit clumsy, but together with the outdoor lighting, safety in the dark is greatly improved. The exterior speakers are perfect for entertaining guests of all ages, and the bunkhouse interior on select floorplans is what makes this rig fit for big families. With so many floorplans, it’s possible to find a bunkhouse option with two master suites, making it a perfect fit for kiddos, parents, and even grandparents!

The Puma is ideal for entertaining given the open layout allowing for easy transition through different areas of the rig. There are layouts featuring kitchens with islands and large countertops, or living rooms equipped with theater seating and electric fireplaces, ideal for cozy winter nights.  This rig is built for adventure as well as connection, as it’s prewired for solar and WiFi. It has interior Bluetooth speakers and an entertainment center so everyone can keep happy and uplifted while traveling the open road.

Once the destination is reached, the power jack and built-in stabilizers help make the setup quick and easy, which is what I need after a long afternoon of driving! I’m also grateful for the ample storage throughout the Palomino Puma, as it means dirty gear can be stored away securely outside, limiting dirt and mess inside the trailer.

This trailer offers many floorplans across a wide variety of travel trailer lengths that makes it feel like there’s a layout for everybody. The roomy interior is finished in an open-plan way that’s perfect for entertaining, even if the party makes its way outside!

Best Indoor/Outdoor Bunkhouse: Keystone Outback Ultra Lite

Speaking of indoor/outdoor partying, the Keystone Outback Ultra Lite is a trailer with bunkhouse options to fit any RVer. This bunkhouse model has a lot to offer, and not only because it’s all housed on a super sturdy and lightweight aluminum frame.  With 9 floorplans and a few of them serving as bunkhouses, there’s a lot to get excited about with this semi-luxurious travel trailer. Keystone makes quality rigs too, with four-season capable options which is exactly what I need, traveling year-round in my rig.

The largest model available under the Outback Ultra Lite name includes an outdoor kitchen , a rear bunkhouse, and a large electric fireplace, creating a welcoming interior. The master bedroom features a walk-around bed and a built-in pet kennel underneath with ample storage so our pup can have a dedicated place to sleep and relax.

The living areas on this particular travel trailer are spacious and accommodating, with open kitchens and dining nooks. The u-shaped dinettes can seat the whole family on some models, which is great considering some of these floor plans can sleep up to 10 people! I love it when the whole family can get together for an RVing adventure, but often it can be tricky to sleep everyone, but not in this Keystone rig!

One of the biggest perks of this travel trailer for me is the abundance of outdoor kitchen accessories available. I’m able to utilize a stove, sink, and mini fridge outside the RV, while an entire residential kitchen awaits me indoors should the weather turn bad quickly! Keystone offers multiple comprehensive warranties for their rigs, and I’m instantly reassured by the high-quality construction of each Keystone travel trailer.

The Outback Ultra Lite is also fit with 4G LTW and Wi-Fi prep for staying connected even in the heart of nature. There’s also ducted heating and cooling which helps to make this rig four-season capable and promises successful all-season adventuring.  There’s a lot on offer with this trailer, especially for those who enjoy both being warm and secure inside an RV, but also heading out into the wilderness at any opportunity!

Best Budget-Friendly: Winnebago Micro Minnie

Out of the 11 floorplans available with the Winnebago Micro Minnie , 4 of them are bunkhouse layouts, creating room to sleep up to 5 people. This isn’t as many as the Palomino Puma, so large families may have to opt for a bigger rig. However, small families or groups of travelers will fit perfectly in this attractive trailer from one of the best budget-friendly RV brands out there!

Winnebago has been in the RV game for some time, and this is reflected throughout all of their rigs, including the Micro Minnie. The smallest floorplan has an overall length of 19′ 5″, while the biggest model measures a substantial 25′ 5″. As the name suggests, the Minnie isn’t the biggest travel trailer out there, but for the price, it boasts an array of great features.

An open galley kitchen equipped with a 3-burner cooktop, convection microwave, and large fridge bring functionality to the trailer and an overall clean kitchen aesthetic. There’s an optional upgrade of European-style cabinetry, but if you don’t mind a more standard finish, keeping away from optional extras will help reduce the final cost.

The large windows throughout this Winnebago allow fresh air to dance throughout the trailer, and help keep things smelling good. I like that the interior isn’t full of storage at every single possibility, and this is thanks to both the interior and exterior storage solutions to keep everything stowed away neatly and securely.

I love spending time outdoors, and although there aren’t too many exterior features with the Micro Minnie, the JBL Premium exterior speakers and powered patio awning with integrated LED lighting help bring personality and fun to the outside of the rig as well. The 200W of solar power on the roof is fantastic for boondocking, but personally, I would like a bit more power so I can run everything in my rig without the use of a noisy generator!

Most Luxurious: Grand Design RV Imagine

Not every floorplan of the Grand Design RV Imagine is a bunkhouse one, but a couple are, and since Grand Design are renowned for producing luxurious rigs, I couldn’t leave the Imagine off our list! Typical of Grand Design RV, the Imagine is constructed with the highest quality possible, with the sidewalls, rear wall, slide-room walls, and slide-room roof all packed with rigid foam insulation.

Not only does this result in a sturdy trailer, but this also means better temperature regulation throughout the year. It’s also possible to walk on the roof which is a game-changer for completing maintenance tasks like covering the RV for summer to prevent sun damage. The enclosed underbelly and double insulated floor also help to regulate the temperature and will help keep the rig in better condition for longer too.

Even the roof is as strong as anything and is backed by an 18-year warranty. I don’t think I’ve seen a warranty this impressive from any other RV! There’s more to the Imagine than just an impressive exterior, however, and the inside of this rig is the dream blend of luxury and practicality. Some of the internal features across select floorplans include double bunk sleeping, a booth dinette, a queen bed, a spacious bathroom with a skylight above the shower, theater seating, and an awning.

It seems Grand Design has thought about pretty much everything with the Imagine, and each layout can be tailored to suit such a diverse range of RVers. This luxury does come at a bit of a higher price than other trailers on our list such as the previously mentioned Winnebago, but the Imagine is a stunning rig, promising adventures far and wide for many years to come.

Best With Slide Outs: Cruiser RV Embrace

Cruiser RV isn’t a name I hear mentioned too often, even though they’ve been in the RV game since 1988! The Cruiser RV Embrace is a travel trailer with 6 different floorplans, with 4 innovative bunkhouse options, ideal for families. The Embrace utilizes slide-outs to enhance the interior space, and this is one of the reasons the interior feels so airy and spacious.

There are many pros and cons to owning a rig with slide-outs as they are another component that will need maintaining, however, they bring extra room and can save the day when last-minute guests want to jump on board for vacation! Starting at just 5,904 lbs and 30′ 8″ in length, the Cruiser Embrace is by no means a small trailer! Measuring in at over 30′ might be too long for some RVers, especially those new to towing.

However, I find practice makes perfect, and my confidence increased substantially after the first few trips I took towing my travel trailer, so don’t lose hope! A couple of layouts are able to sleep upwards of 10 people without a drop of hassle, and this is due to the addition of creative bunk sleeping areas. Along with comfortable beds, there’s also comfortable seating throughout, a dinette, a spacious kitchen, and more to make camping on the road as convenient and fun as possible.

Slide-outs might not be to everyone’s tastes, but in the Embrace, they are fundamental to each and every layout option. The aluminum roof, power awning, underbelly storage, and solar prep, all help make the exterior as impressive as the interior. Upgrading to a 50 amp service is possible with some models, and something I would look into as having more power on board means less stress through cold, dark winters.

Overall, the Cruiser RV Embrace is a solid trailer, equipped with slide-outs, helping create a spacious camper where everyone can feel at home and families can make long-lasting memories. The only downside with this rig for me, is that the holding tanks are only 30 gallons, which is a little on the small side, especially for full-time living and boondocking. However, if this isn’t a dealbreaker, the Embrace is worth considering for a bunkhouse trailer with elegance, slide-outs, and an array of impressive features.

Final Thoughts

Bunkhouse travel trailers are some of the most spacious and unique RV options on the market today. We’ve hopefully helped narrow down your RV search by showcasing some of the best bunkhouse travel trailers around! Finding the perfect RV often takes time and patience, but I trust that you’re not too far away from finding the perfect rig to kickstart your RVing journey.

10 Best Travel Trailers With a Bunkhouse

Travel Trailers With Bunkhouse Cover

Sharing is caring!

Travel trailers with a bunkhouse are a great option for those with kids, but they are also a fun option for the kid in you. A bunkhouse offers that little bit of extra sleeping room that’s often lacking in standard travel trailers.

Plus, it’s great for traveling with friends or extended family when you need that extra bunk or two to make it happen. Adults typically prefer to avoid sleeping on the floor unless there are a lot of good bourbons involved.

Not all travel trailers with a bunkhouse are created equally, which is great for you if you’re in the market for one. They generally range from 22’ to 40’, with a ton of floorplan options and the efficiency of extra sleeping space.

What’s the Difference Between a Bunkhouse and a Travel Trailer?

What’s the Difference Between a Bunkhouse and a Travel Trailer

Technically, they’re both still travel trailers. The only difference is the bunkhouse option has bunk beds or some variation of a bunk. Travel trailers dominate the RV camping industry. There are so many of them it’s easy to get confused as to which is the best.

Manufacturers of travel trailers with a bunkhouse use some pretty ingenuous ways to fit those bunks in there as well, including lofts, which help maintain plenty of vertical space. There’s also a large enough variety, including affordable, mid-range, and premium options.

Plus, bunkhouse travel trailers always seem to have the edge regarding a suitable floor plan. If you lay out the bunkhouse models next to their standard cousins, it’s easy to see that bunkhouse versions often have a spacier layout.

10 Best Travel Trailers with a Bunkhouse

Travel trailers with a bunkhouse have a nice indoor aesthetic, especially when the bunkhouse resembles a loft. Depending on the size of your family, sleeping space is one of the key factors, along with budget and quality.

That said, here are some of the best travel trailers with a bunkhouse on the market today.

1. Jayco Jay Flight 294QBS

Travel Trailers with a Bunkhouse Jayco Jay Flight 294QBS Exterior

Our Pros and Cons:

✅ Quad bunks in the rear

⛔ Dark interior aesthetic might not be for everyone

  • UVW: 6,715lbs
  • GVWR: 8,250lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 910lbs
  • CCC: 1,535lbs
  • Length: 35’ 7”

The quad-bunk room in the back is very spacious. With two foldable beds for optional storage while the others are stationary. The camp-side bunks are a little wider than the right side, but there are plenty of windows and lights for all four.

The Jayco Jay Flight 294QBS sleeps up to 10. Not only can you bring your family along, but they can also bring their friends. Everyone will have a place to sleep.

There is only one full bath, which may have trouble accommodating 10 people, but it’s nice nonetheless. The Queen bed sits on the road side of the trailer, next to a loaded kitchen and entertainment combo, seamlessly integrated and loaded with amenities.

The dinette is U-shaped, restaurant style, and sits next to a jackknife sofa. The kitchen contains all the expected amenities, and it’s easy to take everything outside to the exterior kitchen if needed.

2. Grand Design Imagine 3210BH

Grand Design Imagine 3210BH Exterior

✅ Interior is one of the spaciest designs on the market

⛔Pass-through bathroom is lacking in the way of privacy

  • UVW: 8,394lbs
  • GVWR: 10,195lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 889lbs
  • CCC: 1,801lbs
  • Length: 36’ 11”

The Grand Design Imagine 3210BH pulls off a magic trick. It’s pretty standard looking from the outside (regarding travel trailer aesthetics). When you step inside, however, the amount of space is truly incredible. “Grand Design” indeed.

If you love the high-tech look, the theater seating is really well-thought-out and designed. The main HD TV sits above the dinette booth, with two flanking, upward-firing speakers.

With all that extra space, the 3210BH designed a quad-bunk room on one end, with two flip-top, 34” bunks on one side and two 30” bunks on the other. The exterior includes an outside kitchen with a fridge, grill, and a 9’ awning.

For those who have boondocking in mind, there is an option to add the Imagine Solar Package to support your power needs off the grid.

3. Keystone Hideout 21BHWE

Keystone Hideout 21BHWE Exterior

✅ Small and easy to tow

⛔ It may be too small for larger families

  • UVW: 4,496lbs
  • GVWR: 7,000lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 538lbs
  • CCC: 2,507lbs
  • Length: 25’ 4”

The Keystone Hideout is one of the most affordable travel trailers with a bunkhouse on our list, with an MSRP of $22,639. One of the main attractions of the Hideout 21BHWE is the versatility of the interior.

The jackknife sofa in the living room converts into a murphy bed, converting the front living space into a bedroom in just a few seconds. The Hideout also includes a set of bunks. Being a little smaller has limitations, so there is no quad-bunk here.

The bunk beds are double-size, and despite the small nature of the Hideout, there is still plenty of space inside, along with several storage options.

With that being said, you can still sleep 7 comfortably. This is also a lightweight travel trailer, making it much easier to hook up and tow, especially with the addition of four stabilizer jacks. The power awning is fully adjustable, and the exterior includes speakers for plenty of outdoor entertainment.

4. Palomino Puma 28BHSS

Travel Trailers with a Bunkhouse Palomino Puma 28BHSS Exterior

✅ The interior is high-quality, with a clear focus on craftsmanship

⛔ The EPDM Rubber Roofing has a unique aesthetic

  • UVW: 7,513lbs
  • GVWR: 9,063lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 835lbs
  • CCC: 1,550lbs
  • Length: 36’

Despite that aesthetic, The Puma 28BHSS comes with a 12-year manufacturing warranty , so it’s hard to argue with that. Puma placed a premium on interior height, and unless you play in the NBA, you’ll never feel like you’re about to bounce your head off the top of a door frame.

The Puma 28BHSS presents a unique idea for the bunk house, with wrap-around bunks floating over a sofa bed. Across from the bunks and sofa is a small corner entertainment center crowned with an HD TV.

As a family, your kids might prefer to spend their entertainment evenings in the bunkhouse rather than the living room. It’s that comfortable. The U-Dinette and sofa are a part of the slide-out, but despite the depth, they’re well situated across from the entertainment center.

The kitchen area is fully loaded, including a walk-in pantry. Everything you need for outdoor cooking and grilling is located in the kitchen. The advantage and value packages add many features already, but the optional limited edition and electric power package features can bring this travel trailer to new heights.

5. Keystone Passport 2401BH

Keystone Passport 2401BH Exterior

✅ Two bathrooms, with one located next to the double bunks

⛔ The microwave is super tiny

  • UVW: 5,670lbs
  • GVWR: 7,600lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 685lbs
  • CCC: 1,930lbs
  • Length: 29’ 3”

The Keystone Passport 2401BH travel trailer bunkhouse was designed with storage in mind. You’ll love this travel trailer bunkhouse if you like to pack heavily. The Passport 2401BH is a part of Keystone’s GT series and is new for 2023.

The bunkhouse in the rear is right next to a rear-corner bathroom, with the other bathroom adjacent to the queen bed. Both bunks are doubles, with a ladder and a bed-length window next to each.

The bottom bunk folds up for more storage options, including pass-through storage. The exterior includes an outdoor kitchen and an extra-large awning to cover all outdoor cooking needs.

The U-dinette converts into a bed, and there is more than enough room to sleep 8. Depending on your floor plan, there is also an optional theater dinette, one of the nicest add-ons if you don’t mind the price jump.

6. Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH

Travel Trailers with a Bunkhouse Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH Exterior

✅ Small enough for SUV and ½ ton pickup towing

⛔ You may want to replace the privacy curtain for the master bed with something thicker

  • UVW: 4,036lbs
  • GVWR: 5,500lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 448lbs
  • CCC: 1,464 lbs
  • Length: 21’ 11”

Some people may be disappointed at the elevated MSRP on a mini-travel trailer BH, and that’s a shame because this one happens to be a very nice bunkhouse option that sleeps 5. Within the 22’ length, Winnebago packed two bunks, a full-size main, and a convertible dinette.

Not bad for one of the smallest trailers on the list. It’s also a well-equipped, smaller travel trailer with bunk beds. The Winnebago Micro Minnie 2100BH offers a fully equipped kitchen with plenty of storage capacity.

The three-burner stove is standard in this bunkhouse travel trailer and includes a large sink with a high-rise faucet to boot. The dining area is decent, with booth seating that converts into a sleeper. The bathroom is located next to the bunks and is surprisingly sizeable.

It’s not a full-size bathroom, but it’s definitely more than you would expect for a travel trailer this size. The exterior features are standard but premium, including the LED awning, pass-through storage options, and some basic boondocking features.

7. Crossroads Zinger ZR340BH

Travel Trailer with a Bunkhouse Crossroads Zinger ZR340BH Exterior

✅ Comes with a very premium design aesthetic and feel

⛔ Control center can be finicky in some models

  • UVW: 9,220lbs
  • GVWR: 11,450lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 1,252lbs
  • CCC: 2,230lbs
  • Length: 38’

The word “zinger” conjures images of something small and streamlined, but the Crossroads Zinger ZR340BH is anything but that idea. This monster is going for the royalty look and, for the most part, pulls it off nicely.

The aesthetic is spot on, and when you throw in the roaring fireplace, king-size bed, and wardrobe/entertainment center, this becomes one of the most comfortable BH travel trailers on the market. It is also easy to get into the storage bays with the Keyed-A-Like Locking system.

It’s a spacious travel trailer that places a premium on privacy, with the bunk area and the king bedroom completely privatized, assuming you like to close doors. There are storage options aplenty, with a nice entertainment center that melds seamlessly with the L-counter in the kitchen.

There’s a lone bathroom, but it retains the overall aesthetic, with enough room to move around. The exterior contains all of the storage and entertainment features you would expect, including a large awning and an outside kitchen built into the side.

8. Coachmen Northern Spirit 2963BH

Coachmen Northern Spirit 2963BH Exterior

✅ Very kid and pet-focused

⛔ The tool center is located next to the door, which may get in the way

  • UVW: 6,408lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 760lbs
  • CCC: 1,192lbs
  • Length: 34’

Coachmen’s Northern Spirit Ultra-Lite Series is relatively new to the world of RVs, but if they keep pushing products like the Northern Spirit 2963BH , they’ll do just fine. For 34’, it’s easy to see why.

This is a popular option for large families, especially with younger kids involved. Both double bunks (the lower one flips up) come with kid’s convenience centers and a bathroom directly adjacent to the bunks.

The bathroom is one of the largest on the list and includes a full tub and a hamper. Plus, it’s accessible with an entranceway from the outside. The queen bed is also a flip-up, flanked by two small wardrobes and plenty of storage beneath the bed.

The U-Dinette is also a convertible bed and includes a pet center. The entertainment center is also a nice touch, butting up against a large L-counter with plenty of surface space. The outside includes storage options and the requisite RV outdoor kitchen.

9. Cruiser Embrace EL280

Cruiser Embrace EL280 Exterior

✅ Spacious and window-friendly for an airy feel

⛔ Entertainment Center TV is angled poorly to the sofa

  • UVW: 6,360lbs
  • GVWR: 9,620lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 820lbs
  • CCC: 3,228lbs
  • Length: 33’ 4”

The Cruiser Embrace EL280 placed a premium on the word “private” with the front bedroom and the three-bed bunkhouse. Each space has doors to close them off from the rest of the trailer. The bunkhouse includes a foldable upper bunk and a lower lounge area.

It’s also conveniently located next to the bathroom, which is large enough to include a bathtub. The unique shape of the sink countertop provides some additional counter space and is located across from a booth-style dining area.

The sofa is highly comfortable and standard size, but the HD TV does have a semi-awkward angle to the couch. The primary bed is king-size, leaving plenty of “walk-around” room on both sides.

10. Lance 2185

 Lance 2185 Exterior

✅ With a focus on “flexible” space, sleeping and space are entirely adjustable

⛔ Flip-top table can get in the way of the front entryway

  • UVW: 5,345lbs
  • GVWR: 7,900lbs
  • Tongue/Hitch Weight: 915lbs
  • CCC: 2,555lbs
  • Length: 26’ 1”

The bunkhouse in the Lance 2185 features a three-level bunk, with the bottom bed resting on the floor, which is where the flexibility resides. Since the bed folds up, it presents several storage options or other lounging possibilities.

The front bedroom includes a bed that flips down into a couch, with a forward windshield that gives the room an incredible vibe. Two mini-wardrobes flanks the bed, but the room’s overall aesthetic remains spacey and modern.

The kitchen is standard and includes all amenities, including the flip-top counter piece for additional real estate when you’re working in the kitchen. The outside space has hookups for three propane tanks and an optional solar array.

Two lithium-ion batteries, three propane tanks, and the addition of solar panels open up the boondocking options if that’s your thing.

Do You Need a Big Truck to Tow a Bunkhouse?

You don’t need a big truck to tow a bunkhouse travel trailer. Some compact trucks are more than capable of hauling weights above 7,000 lbs. Most bunkhouses are designed for full-size truck hauling, but there are exceptions, like the Winnebago Minnie.

Are Bunkhouses Good for Full-Time Living?

Are Bunkhouses Good for Full-Time Living

Travel trailers with a bunkhouse are good for full-timing. Some of these travel trailers are monstrous in size, and their amenities are perfect. On the other hand, if you have a family of 8 to 10 and own a Winnebago Minnie 2100BH, well, you have fun with that.

How Much Does a Travel Trailer with a Bunkhouse Cost?

The price disparity can be pretty wide. For instance, the MSRP on the Keystone Hideout 21BHWE is $22k, while the MSRP on the Grand Design Imagine 3210BH is $67k. The numbers are all over the place, but you shouldn’t expect to exceed $80k in most cases.

How Long are Travel Trailers with Bunkhouses?

Travel trailers with a bunkhouse are long as 40′ and as short as 20′. Manufacturers create floorplans that include bunkhouses without sacrificing standard spaces in a travel trailer.

8 Things to Look for in a Travel Trailer with a Bunkhouse

Things to Look for in a Travel Trailer with a Bunkhouse

The first and most obvious thing to look for is a bunkhouse. There are sinister things afoot if it’s a travel trailer with a bunkhouse and lacks a bunkhouse.

1. Number of Beds

Aside from the necessary, dedicated bunkbeds, the number of beds is just as important. If you have a large family, four bunks, a convertible dinette, and the main bedroom provide a good deal of sleeping room.

Length is critical, depending on what (if any) sacrifices were made regarding living space. While a 35’ travel trailer bunkhouse is bound to have plenty of space, that doesn’t necessarily mean that a 29’ bunkhouse is a ripoff.

3. Family-Friendly Layout

Family-friendly travel trailer bunkhouse layouts focus on families. A bunkhouse is great, especially for sleeping arrangements, but the rest of the travel trailer should also be family-friendly.

4. Extra Amenities

The Coachmen Northern Spirit 2963BH is an example of extra amenities, including the kid’s convenience centers in each bunk and the pet center in the kitchen/living space. Extra amenities are always a plus, if not a requirement in many cases.

5. Number and Style of Bathrooms

Things to Look for in a Travel Trailer with a Bunkhouse Number an Style of Bathrooms

For larger families, bathrooms jump to a higher tier of importance. One full bathroom is great until you have 8 people running around and three need to use it. Simplicity is fine for small families, but the larger the family, the more a bunkhouse travel trailer with a bath and a half becomes necessary.

6. Cargo Space and Capacity

Most of the travel trailer bunkhouses on this list are great in terms of storage. For those that may seem lacking, keep your eyes peeled for flexibility in different rooms, such as fold-up bunks and pass-through storage options.

All towable travel trailers can add more storage with some creative DIY products and devices. Learn simple tricks to increase your storage capacity in our RV storage hacks article on our sister-site Motorhome FAQs.

7. Maintenance

Nobody wants a travel trailer bunkhouse that requires a high level of maintenance. It’s more about ease of maintenance. How accessible is everything? Can you get to the back of the water heater? How much access do you have to the wiring?

When shopping for your perfect-size RV , also approach it from a repair and maintenance point of view.

Fortunately, there is a wide spectrum in the MSRPs for travel trailer bunkhouse prices. You can push it as low as $20k without sacrificing too much. Even if you decide to go with a used travel trailer bunkhouse, manufacturer warranties are often multi-year.

What Do You Look for in a Travel Trailer Bunkhouse?

Look for the best accommodation for your family and their needs, wants, and preferences. The best thing about travel trailer bunkhouses is the focused design for larger families, with applicable features and amenities.

Since bunkhouse travel trailers are designed for several individuals, bathrooms, storage space, privacy, beds, and lounging areas are critical to match your family size.

Top 7 best quad bunkhouse travel trailers for full time rVing families

If you’re traveling as a family, it can be tricky to find travel trailers with enough sleeping accommodations for everyone.

Although many travel trailers have sofa beds and convertible dinettes, these sleeping areas may only accommodate two or three people. You also have to convert your living space every night when it’s time for bed.

An excellent solution is travel trailers with a dedicated bunkhouse at the rear of the vehicle.

Some trailers have four bunks, so that you don’t need to bother transforming your living area each night.

A quad bunk travel trailer provides more privacy and comfort, since the bunkhouse is essentially a second bedroom.

Many of these trailer layouts also include additional outdoor kitchens for prepping large meals, higher capacity water tanks to support more people, and additional features or systems for accommodating families.

To help you in your search for the best travel trailer with quad bunks, I’ve done some research to show you the best travel trailer models with the most agreeable quad bunkhouse floorplans for traveling with large families.

Why Choose a Bunkhouse Travel Trailer Under 25 Feet?

Why Choose a Travel Trailer?  Travel trailers are a very advantageous type of recreational vehicle because of their versatility. When it comes to travel trailers, there are an infinite number of floorplans, lengths, weights, load capacities, etc.

Why Choose a Bunkhouse Travel Trailer?   Travel trailers with bunks are a great way to share memorable moments with our families and friends.

Bunkhouse travel trailers are less expensive and give additional sleeping space. A bunk room in a travel trailer may provide adaptability as well as sleeping space. Bunk bed campers are ideal for families and large groups. It is quite handy to accommodate all family members and visitors without having to assemble and disassemble beds, sofas, dinettes, and so on. You may relax on the bunk beds anytime you like so that the areas can be utilized during the day. Furthermore, bunk beds for RVs are the handiest and most comfortable beds available. I’m willing to bet that current RV manufacturers provide comfortable bunk beds, even double sizes, with storage and USB hookups.

Why Choose a Bunkhouse Travel Trailer Under 25 Feet?  The biggest advantage of choosing a short travel trailer, under 25, or under 20-30 feet , is that it is easier to drive and maneuver to park and sightsee the cities during vacation time. A bunkhouse also conserves weight and space, enabling several people to sleep and rest in a relatively small area. Aside from that, kids adore bunk beds.

Check out below our list of the 10 best bunkhouse travel trailers under 25 feet with specs, floorplans, 360-tours, and walk-through videos. Also, I took the liberty to include travel trailers with bunks under 20 feet in the top 10 list.

What are the benefits of a bunkhouse camper?

Travel trailer bunkhouses are a great value––you get extra sleeping space for an affordable price. In addition to sleeping capacity, a travel trailer with a bunk room can provide flexibility. Bunk beds are efficient in floor plans, leaving more floor space to move around. Some bunkhouses include beds in a loft, which makes the most of vertical space, leaving you more RV storage room.

These types of RVs are typically smaller, lighter, and more affordable compared to fifth wheels and toy haulers . And smaller travel trailers are great for new RV owners , because their size means they’re easier to tow. Don’t let categories fool you, however––travel trailers are more than just basic RVs. You can also find travel trailers with bunkhouses in mid-range and luxury models, and with a wide variety of attractive amenities. Looking for a bunkhouse model with a fireplace or an outdoor RV kitchen ? Heartland can help you find it.

Who should consider buying a travel trailer bunkhouse RV?

Travel trailers with bunkhouses can suit a variety of campers. Maybe you have a big family with lots of kids, or you like to travel with your extended family in a bunkhouse travel trailer. Bunk beds are a great way to give everyone a little space to themselves. If you like to travel with groups of friends, travel trailer bunkhouse campers are perfect for keeping everyone happy on the road.

Kids love bunk beds because they can go to sleep earlier or later than their siblings without being disturbed when someone else gets up or goes to bed. And a bunkhouse RV's floor plans are perfect for teenagers who want to bring along a friend or just have some time alone to read or listen to music in peace. One additional use for bunk beds is overflow storage space, particularly for people traveling with large objects. For instance, we know of one family who RVs full-time and uses their bunk bed to hold a stand-up cello when they’re on the road.

Disclaimer: Always consult owner’s manuals for vehicles and accessories before towing a recreational vehicle. Towing capacity will vary based on cargo, vehicle configuration, accessories, and number of passengers.

The number of bunks is a primary consideration when you are buying a bunkhouse travel trailer, especially an under 30 ft model. Most of them have two bunkers, which are enough for an average family, but you can choose a three bunker trailer too if you have more people vacationing with you.

The length of these travel trailers is very important because they have to be large enough to fit everything in them. Of course for anything under 30 ft, your trailer is going to be restrictive, so always make sure you are comfortable with the length and space available.

Living Space

The living area space matters a lot, too, when you are buying a travel trailer. This is the place where your family spends the most time, so it should be spacious and comfortable. Also, aim to get as much entertainment accessories as possible.

Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailer Under 30 Ft FAQs

Top 13 Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Hey! This site is reader-supported and we earn commissions if you purchase products from retailers after clicking on a link from our site.

If you’re looking for an RV with room for the entire family, campers with bunk rooms are worth a look. The best bunkhouse travel trailers are space for four or six people to live full time while adventuring on the road. This generally means saying no to the pull-out sofa or the convertible dinette; these trailers have dedicated space for the kids to sleep and enough room that everyone has a little slice of privacy.

Simply put, a bunkhouse travel trailer has extra bunks. It’s an important distinction, especially when looking at smaller, lightweight trailers. Many of these smaller towable RV models are made to be comfortable for a couple but not so much for large families. A bunkhouse travel trailer fixes this by adding a separate space with dedicated beds for the little ones.

Finding the best bunk room travel trailer for your family starts with striking a balance between the overall size of the trailer you can deal with and the amenities you need. Many of us would like to tow a fifth-wheel trailer or get a Class A, but it’s not feasible a lot of the time. A bunkhouse travel trailer layout is a good place to start since it maximizes floor space and provides a little more privacy.

Smaller, Lighter, Cheaper than Other Options

First off, most bunkhouse travel trailer layouts tend to be travel trailers. By adding more bunks and more rooms, a travel trailer can fit the bill for some campers. They provide enough amenities to keep a family of four (or maybe six) comfortable on long trips. But at the same time, they’re easier to tow, small, and more affordable than a comparable fifth wheel or Class A coach.

Affordability gets better and better the smaller the trailer. If you can tow your travel trailer with the full-size SUV that you already own, you’ll save money in the long run. Remember, you must tow fifth wheels with customized pickups, and Class A’s are much more expensive altogether. So a bunkhouse travel trailer might allow you to skip all of these extra costs if you can tow it with the vehicle you already own.

Dedicated Bunks

Many trailer makers squeeze in an impressive number of bunks, but they have often shared surfaces. So, for example, a dinette might convert into a double, or a jack-knife sofa might pull out and make a large bunk.

In any case, all of these solutions are a pain. It means you’ve got to give up your sitting and dining area to get ready for bed. Furthermore, a daily set-up and break-down phase will become a time-consuming chore. These shared-use spaces are great solutions if you have occasional overnight guests, like an annual trip with the grandkids. But if you are looking for a daily solution, everyone getting their own bed is the key to family happiness.

More Privacy

Mid and larger-sized bunkhouse travel trailers will have the ability to close a door and shut off the bunkhouse travel trailer from the rest of the camper. For parents with small children, this gives the kids their own quiet space to rest, all while freeing up the rest of the camper and leaving the dinette and kitchen intact.

So how does it work in your family? Do the kids go to bed early, or do you rise and shine with the sun while the kids sleep in? These things are much easier if you’ve got a little more privacy.

In smaller RVs, bunks might not have their own doors or be in enclosed rooms. But just having a dedicated place where you can put your stuff makes a world of difference in terms of organization and planning.

Flexibility

Finally, the bunkhouse travel trailer layout provides many options for even those who aren’t traveling with families. It might be handy if you travel with friends or guests one day. For day-to-day living, the bunk space is a welcome addition for storage. It’s invaluable to have the option to put random stuff in a place that is out of the way and not taking up other living spaces.

Travel Trailer and Towing Woes

If you’re comparing a towable to a Class A coach or even to a larger fifth wheel, keep in mind that towing a large travel trailer is still no trivial task. While these trailers are lighter and can be towed by some SUVs, they are by no means ultralights. If your vehicle’s towing capacity isn’t at least 5,000 pounds, you’re probably out of luck unless you’re looking for the smallest bunkhouse travel trailer out there.

And even though they can be pretty luxurious, you won’t find as many amenities in these campers as you would in fifth wheels or coaches. These are budget-conscious starter RVs, and you aren’t likely to find them decked out with washers and dryers, fireplaces, or even very large tanks.

Extra Size, Complexity, and Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

On the flip side, these trailers aren’t small and simple, either. While some bunkhouse travel trailers are pretty small and light, there is no getting around the fact that it is an upgrade from the basic camper design.

If your second and third bunks are shared spaces, like sofas or dinettes, the total camper length can be much smaller. Unfortunately, you won’t find bunkhouse travel trailer layouts available in the smallest travel trailers, and when you do find one, it comes at the cost of removing something else entirely.

True Overall Capacity

The next problem with these designs is that they can squeeze many people into a very small camper. The more people you carry, the more space you need for tankage, groceries, clothing, and supplies. So while you might be able to find campers that measure less than 20 feet with multiple bunks, will they provide enough space for everyone to camp comfortably?

It’s much easier for families with small kids to use ultralight bunkhouse travel trailers. Older kids and teens are more likely to want their own space and greater privacy, requiring more space.

Another factor that makes a big difference is the lengths of trips involved. For example, does your group head out for a single overnight? Or are you hoping to spend weeks at a time on the road?

None of these things is a disadvantage, per se. But they do require looking at the camper as a whole package and objectively thinking about how it will suit your mission.

What Is the Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailer?

The good news is that quite a few manufacturers are offering a bunkhouse travel trailer model. These floorplans are popular–they are an inexpensive way to get the whole family on board. That makes them perfect starters and entry-level RVs.

It’s difficult to say which is the best because every camper’s needs are slightly different. Some are looking for an ultralight and minimalist camping experience. Others might be looking for some luxuries and a bigger rig.

Once you know what a bunkhouse travel trailer is, you’ll probably pin down exactly why you do or don’t want one quickly. And in doing that, you’ll likely know exactly what you need. How many bunks, what sort of space, and what does your budget look like for cost and overall size? Layouts vary considerably between model lines, even from the same RV manufacturer. The only way to find one that suits you is to go out and walk through some in the real world!

Number of Beds

Probably the first criterion will be figuring out exactly how many bunks you need. The fewer bunks you can get away with, the more spacious the camper will feel. After that, just make sure all of your family members, or whoever is traveling with you regularly, have their own private space.

Of course, not all bunks are created equally. Many campers have smaller single bunks that are built for kids. Older children and teens might feel quite cramped and uncomfortable, so you’ll want to be sure to spend some time in each layout and see how your family fits, literally!

Most trailers have just one bathroom to optimize space. Some models have stand-up showers only, but some have tub/shower combinations. If you are traveling with younger kids, you might prefer a bathroom with a tub for easy bathtime.

Bathroom location can be important to families. Some models have a bathroom close to the master suite, which is great for the parents but might be inconvenient for the kids. Others place the bathroom next to the bunk room, which is easier for the kids but might be harder for the parents. A centralized bathroom works well for all.

Most bunkhouse travel trailer kitchens feature a fridge, microwave, storage, prep space, and sink. However, you might prefer a kitchen with additional prep space and a large pantry if you are traveling long-term. In addition, some larger rigs have a kitchen island which gives more counter space.

  • Outdoor Kitchen

Most modern models feature outdoor kitchens. This is a great way to enjoy outdoor time as a family and keep the heat and mess of meal prep outside the RV. In addition, outdoor kitchens usually have an extra fridge, which is great for extending the time between grocery runs. Outdoor kitchens also have a sink and griddle or stovetop.

Dinette Seating

Small trailers usually have small dinettes, and this is one of the easiest ways you can gauge just how comfortable your family will be. Is there enough room for the family to eat around the table comfortably? While at the table, can the chef get to and from the kitchen easily?

These might sound like minor things, but you have to remember that it’s easy for RV makers to add more bunks. It’s much harder for them to create layouts that work for that many people. Can you realistically use the layout and be comfortable? That’s the question you need to continually ask yourself as you compare layouts.

Dinette seating usually converts into extra own sleeping space, adding to the number of guests you can host.

Number of Slide-Outs

Slide-outs are an easy way to get more real estate inside the RV. It’s especially useful with a dinette, but it’s also handy in some bunkhouse travel trailer layouts where the bunkroom slides out for more floor space.

Slides add cost and complexity to a rig, however. As with all decisions when planning such a big purchase, you’ll have to find the right balance. Make sure the expense of a slide-out is gaining you something. It should make a useable space that makes the camper feel more comfortable.

Bunkhouse Length

Most bunkhouse travel trailers are less than 40 feet long. The smaller and lighter the RV, the easier it is to tow. Shorter trailers are easier to store and find campground spaces for. Bunkhouse travel trailers on our list range from a tiny 13-foot trailers to a 39-foot trailers. The best shopping technique is to buy the smallest bunkhouse travel trailer that will meet your needs for the kind of traveling you enjoy.

National parks can easily accommodate RVs under 25 feet. An RV under 37 feet can access about 60% of parks, while only a small percentage of National Parks can accommodate trailers over 40 feet. If traveling to National Parks is on your bucket list, aim for a smaller rig.

Weight and Tow Capacity

If you already have a tow vehicle and don’t want to trade up, pick an RV that matches your current vehicle. Most RVs advertise their empty weight. This weight doesn’t include water or fuel in the tanks and personal gear. After you’ve loaded up the trailer, it will weigh more. Make sure you know how much weight your SUV can tow and calculate the actual weight of the trailer plus any liquids, RV accessories , and gear.

RVs come with several tanks. You’ll have fresh water tanks, propane tanks, grey water tanks, and black water tanks. The bigger your tanks, the longer you can go without topping off and dumping out. However, bigger tanks also take up more storage space and add to your total towing weight.

If you plan on boondocking for weeks, look for a trailer with large tanks. On the other hand, if you plan on simple weekends at an RV park, you can get away with smaller tanks.

Separate Bunk Rooms

The bigger the trailer, the more space, and privacy bunk rooms will have. While you can find some very small campers that squeeze many bunks into short tow packages, the amenities are generally limited.
