I mean, there are seriously so many cool places to visit right here in the United States, and Texas has some major appeal. Texas is a MAJOR travel destination and even has two different cities in US News Travel’s top 17 US cities to visit this year.  

If you’re deciding between San Antonio, Texas and Austin, Texas as a travel destination this year, we’ll weigh the pros and cons of each city to help you pick the best one for you.

If I ’m going for history, culture, and nature I’ll pick San Antonio, and if I want live music, shopping, and water I’ll pick Austin.

They both have amazing hotels, restaurants, museums, and bars!

Also worth noting: San Antonio is just a bit cheaper than Austin . It’s not enough to make a major difference if you’re doing a solo trip by yourself, but if you’re visiting with a big family for a 5-day trip, it might be something you want to factor in.

San Antonio Versus Austin: Which One Should You Visit?

Having spent A LOT of time (and money, lol) in both cities, I’ll share with you everything I know about the major differences between San Antonio and Austin to help you decide which one you should visit.

Full disclosure: I seriously adore both of these cities . I can’t pick a favorite. I think it’s worth visiting both of them, and since they’re just 1.5 hours apart by car, you could easily get a rental car and fit both cities into one trip! But if you MUST visit just one, I’ll try to help you decide which one fits your travel personality best.

1. San Antonio has a richer history than Austin.

I mean, these are Texas cities so they don’t have as much history as a European city (or even a New England city in the United States).

But San Antonio was founded earlier than Austin, and it has a lot more historical landmarks to see. In fact, the San Antonio Missions Park (which includes The Alamo) is the only UNESCO world heritage site in Texas! You can even bike to all 5 missions in one afternoon .

2. Austin is much more “glitz and glam” than San Antonio.

A lot of us have started calling Austin “Dallas lite” because of all the shiny new high-rise buildings being built downtown, luxury shopping brands everywhere (there’s now an Hermés located at The Shops at South Congress), and high-end national chain restaurants.

Some people visit San Antonio and say that parts of it look a bit run down in comparison. (The truth is that San Antonio simply has a lot of character and history!)

3. If you love being on the water, visit Austin.

Downtown Austin is located next to Lady Bird Lake, which is a portion of the Colorado river that has been dammed to create a gorgeous body of water. You can go paddle boarding in it, swim in Barton Springs, and even rent a boat in Lake Austin, which is another part of the river a few minutes west of the city. Austin is a water city!

There are some Austin hotels that overlook the water (The LINE is my favorite one) and you can enjoy the 1, 3, or 6-mile loop walking trail around the lake while you drink your morning coffee.

4. Both cities have incredible restaurants.

Just a few short years ago, Austin was much more well-known for its restaurant scene than San Antonio. But in the past few years, San Antonio has started racking up James Beard Award nominations, tons of new restaurant openings, and a very impressive list of places to eat with national recognition.

Honestly, I get just as excited about the best restaurants in San Antonio as I do about all the great places to eat in Austin!

5. San Antonio is a bit less expensive than Austin.

Hotel stats say that the average hotel price in San Antonio is about $37 cheaper per night than Austin . But I can also tell you, after spending my money at restaurants and museums and kid-friendly things to do in San Antonio , that prices in SA are just cheaper across the board.

A cocktail at a nice restaurant in Austin will easily cost $18, while I can pretty easily find one in San Antonio for about $14-15. The same is true for museum access, concert tickets, street parking, and Uber prices. It’s all just a bit cheaper in San Antonio .

I think that part of this is simply due to the fact that real estate is absolutely insane in Austin, so restaurants are charging more for food and beverages to help offset that cost.

(This is a huge generalization and NOT OFFICIAL. I’m just saying what I’m noticing as a consumer.)

6. If you want to hear a lot of live music, go to Austin.

Even thought the “keep Austin weird” vibe and live performers on every street corner isn’t necessarily the norm anymore, there truly are a bunch of great music venues in Austin!

Whether you love small music venues or huge amphitheaters, country music or pop, singer-songwriters or jazz bands, Austin has it all. Here are 14 live music venues in Austin that I love .

7. Want theme parks, water parks, and NBA games? Go to San Antonio.

Austin doesn’t have any big theme parks. So if you want those, go to SA! San Antonio is famous for Six Flags Fiesta Texas, White Water Bay (Six Flags water park), SeaWorld San Antonio, and Aquatica (SeaWorld’s water park.)

San Antonio is also home to NBA basketball team The Spurs. There are a lot of big ticket items happening in San Antonio, and they’re all fun!

8. Austin is a taller city, San Antonio is more spread out.

What does this mean for you as a traveler? It means that it’s easier to visit Austin without a car. (Psst: do you need a car in San Antonio? What about in Austin ?) It also means that there are more rooftop cocktail bars in Austin with views . And if you’re visiting San Antonio, keep in mind that you might need to factor in a bit more time for getting from point A to point B.

9. Crazy good tacos in both cities!

These are facts. The Latino population in San Antonio means insanely good Mexican street tacos on pretty much every corner. And Austin isn’t too shabby either in its taco representation ! You can also get great breakfast tacos in San Antonio and great breakfast tacos in Austin . 

Basically if you’re looking at San Antonio versus Austin on who has the best tacos, you just can’t lose either way! 

10. They’re both hella hot in the summer…but SA is a bit hotter.

There’s really no way around this one! Both Austin and San Antonio are insanely hot from July - September. San Antonio is a little bit hotter (it’s further south), but I would try to avoid visiting either city in the summer months if you can.

Aim for a May trip, or wait until the weather cools down in October and November. That’s when patio season and outdoor concert season hits, and it’s so much fun!

If you absolutely must visit in the summer, there are some great indoor things to do in Austin that will help you out. And here are a bunch of tips for making the most out of the San Antonio summers.

Like I said before, I personally love both of these cities…I can’t pick a favorite! Locals hold some traditions that others consider strange.

For instance, tacos count as breakfast, toplessness is ok, and people like bats. 

Over a million bats fly from the Congress Bridge toward the city every summer night after sunset.

While most people consider bats harmful and ominous, Austin locals seemingly find them untroubling.

Paseo del Río is one of San Antonio’s most famous attractions.

However, recent expansion efforts have reduced tourist numbers, with more preferring to visit other areas.  

The 8-mile Mission Reach expansion connects four of the city’s 18 th -century missions, excluding the Alamo.

It features a below-street-level public walkway where you can walk or bike.

More importantly, the project restored the San Antonio River to its natural condition. 

The revamped River Walk now covers 15 miles combined with the previously completed Museum Reach section.

The Museum Reach segment links the upcoming Pearl District to the San Antonio Museum of Art.

Its connection to the River Walk increases accessibility to the city’s cultural and historical sites. 

Pearl District

If the Alamo and River Walk seem dull, visit the Pearl District , a former industrial park in downtown San Antonio that is changing into a trendy and vibrant neighborhood.

It was formerly known as the Pearl Brewhouse and once had the largest brewery in Texas.

The deck’s floor has photographs of San Antonio’s landmarks to help visitors identify their surroundings.

Its walls have eye-catching murals that depict the story of the six flags that once flew over Texas.

The tower’s base has an expansive gift shop that offers a unique selection of souvenirs to take home as a remembrance of your time on top of the building.

From Austin To San Antonio: My 13 Favorite Experiences Along I-35

Mention San Antonio, and people immediately think of the Alamo – maybe the Riverwalk . But the city, and others in Texas Hill Country, are home to more than those two treasures. From an African safari in the middle of Hill Country to art on the sides of buildings in Austin, exploring Texas is more than just hitting the popular joints. While we enjoyed seeing the Alamo and walking along San Antonio’s water attraction, my wife and I loved exploring attractions along Interstate 35 in San Antonio and Texas Hill Country.

Here, in no particular order, are my top choices for places to visit along Interstate 35 between San Antonio and Austin.

1. Briscoe Western Museum, San Antonio

Offering a different take on Texas’s cowboy days, the Briscoe Western Art Museum embraces contemporary artists’ views on the wild west. The museum includes art highlighting the region’s history from the perspective of Indigenous peoples, Mexico’s vaqueros, and Anglo settlers. With saddles once used by Pancho Villa as well as sculptures celebrating Native American leaders Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, the Briscoe shares stories with the art. Anglo art features wagons and a stagecoach as well as remnants from the Alamo. A self-guided tour of the museum’s three floors includes beautiful art intertwined with the region’s history. An exhibit hall features special exhibits. Afterward, stroll through the outdoor sculpture garden.

2. Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, New Braunfels

With giraffes, wildebeest, sable antelope, and ostriches, New Braunfels ‘ Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch transports visitors to Africa’s Serengeti. Featuring 24 species, the ranch offers guided and self-guided tours at the drive-thru sanctuary. A guided tour includes lots of background information on the animals. Tours typically take 2-3 hours, and I recommend purchasing some feed pellets to share among the animals, as they will approach vehicles and appreciate the treats. The landscape’s hills, woods, and flat, open spaces make it easy to envision you’re in Africa. The ranch also includes a walking section that features lemurs and African crowned cranes. While there, visitors can grab a bite or treat at the cafe and pick up souvenirs in the gift shop.

The wildlife ranch is part of dual attractions in the area. Natural Bridge Caverns started with a 60-foot-long limestone bridge over a valley. In 1960, college students explored underground and found 2 miles of breathtaking views with jagged rock formations, spires, and paths. Today, visitors can explore about a half-mile of the caverns on the Discovery Tour. Traveling 180 feet below the surface, your guided tour on a lighted path takes you along flowstones, chandeliers, and soda straw formations. The Hidden Passages Tour takes explorers into a different section of the caverns, where you’ll see unique shapes, including stalactites and cave ribbons. Each tour takes about an hour. However, you can combine the tours for a sure-fire fun exploration of the Natural Bridge Caverns. Plan for about 2 hours.

Make your visit a full-day event with the wildlife ranch and caverns, as well as checking out the zip rails and ropes course. You’ll traverse along rope obstacles and zip rails 60 feet above the ground.

• The Natural Bridge Caverns and zip rails and ropes course require a lot of walking, including stairs. 
• For the caverns, you’ll want to arrive about 30 minutes before your tour.

3. Air Force Security Forces Museum, Lackland Air Force Base

Home to the Air Force’s basic training squadrons, San Antonio ‘s Lackland Air Force Base includes the Security Forces Museum , offering a look at the service’s law enforcement and security forces history. From the days of the Air Police to duty during the Middle East conflicts, the two-floor museum gives an interesting look at the military service’s police history. Free and open to the public, veterans and others will enjoy an up-close look at the Air Force unit.

Combine your visit to the Security Forces Museum with stops at the Airmen Heritage Museum and Air Park as part of the Airmen Heritage Training Complex .

Pro Tip: Visitors must have a valid state-issued ID, such as a driver’s license as well as auto registration and proof of insurance to gain access. The base visitors center verifies information, which can take 30-60 minutes, so you’ll want to plan accordingly.

4. Murals, Austin

A must for any visitor, explore Austin ‘s unique vibe through its public art mural scene. Begin with the Greetings from Austin mural on First Street, then head to South Congress Avenue , where you’ll find dozens of beautiful art pieces along the walls of shops and restaurants. From Willie Nelson for President and Mr. Rogers to bison, South Congress shows off artists’ takes on beautiful art.

Pro Tip: Parking can be a challenge. However, there is street parking available a block or two off of Congress, as well as parking garages on the main route. Congress can be a long walk, so you may want to find a garage about midway along the avenue.

5. New Braunfels Conservation Plaza, New Braunfels

Among beautiful flowers and botanicals, enjoy touring 18 historical buildings that help tell New Braunfels’ history. Each building at the New Braunfels Conservation Plaza represents an era in the city’s history. From an 1849 farm barn loaded with equipment and an 1865 general store to an early 1900s auto garage complete with an antique car inside, stroll 3.5 acres, soaking in the history of this Hill Country community.

Pro Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes, as most of the paths are gravel.

6. Market Square, San Antonio

Market Square offers more than just a home for outstanding restaurants and shops. Explore the city’s Latin history by strolling through the market’s shops. You’ll learn the story behind major attractions and events, such as dolls celebrating Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), as well as enjoy the vibrant colors of Mexican pottery.

Pro Tip: The Market Square has a parking garage about a block from the main attractions. I recommend parking there. With elevators and stairs, it offers easy access to the shopping center.

7. Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center, Austin

As Texas’ botanical garden, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center highlights plants and flowers native to the state. Exploring more than a dozen gardens, from pollinator gardens with flowers and plants attractive to butterflies and a variety of bees to a grove of important regional oak trees, the botanical garden is home to about 900 species of plants and flowers. You’ll find cacti, a variety of flowers, and prairie grass among the gardens. The wildflower center, opened in 1982 and renamed in honor of the former First Lady of the United States in 1997, features an observation tower that provides impressive views of its 284 acres.

Pro Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes during your visit. While most paths are paved, you should always be on the lookout for any uneven spots. It’s easy to spend several hours at the wildlife center, so you may want to enjoy lunch or a delicious baked treat at the café.

8. Texas State Capitol, Austin

Learn about the history of key Texans, such as Sam Houston, during a guided tour of the state capitol . As you explore the building during a 1-hour guided outing (self-guided tours are also available), you’ll visit both chambers of the Texas legislature and learn about the art inside the House of Representatives and Senate. When you arrive at the capitol, stand in the middle of the rotunda and look up at the dome; you’ll see Texas spelled out around the star. After your tour, explore the capitol’s grounds, checking out its natural beauty and sculptures in the area.

9. The Saga At San Fernando Cathedral, San Antonio

San Fernando Cathedral’s facade lights up at night, telling the story of San Antonio. The Saga – a laser and light show focused on the area’s history from its prehistoric era through the Alamo and contemporary times – immerses the front of the church at San Antonio’s Plaza de Las Islas Canarias in history. The laser show, complete with music and other audio, runs at night on Tuesday and from Friday through Sunday.

10. Historical Murals, New Braunfels

New Braunfels’ German immigration and Mexican history are on display through a series of downtown murals . Offering a look at the city’s Hispanic influence, a large mural tells the story from early agriculture days through Spanish expeditions, as well as a look at vaqueros. Other murals explore the German immigration to Hill Country, organized by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels. Another mural celebrates New Braunfels’ entertainment history, including movie theaters and western dances.

11. Lady Bird Lake, Austin

Home to the world-famous bat watching under the Congress Avenue bridge, Lady Bird Lake offers a variety of fun activities. Formerly known as Town Lake, Lady Bird Lake is actually a reservoir on the Colorado River. Covering more than 450 acres, the lake attracts kayakers as well as riverboat tours. With plenty of trails, it’s a popular walking area with amazing views of nature and Austin’s downtown skyline. Perhaps lesser-known, a wetlands area is located near the lake. With birds such as cormorants, egrets, and herons, it’s easy to spend hours admiring them as they move about freely from one grass area to another, or spend time on rocks or logs.

12. San Marcos River, San Marcos

With river temperatures at 72 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, the San Marcos River is a must for water playtime. Whether you prefer to go tubing (floating on the river on an inflated inner tube) or enjoy a workout with a stand-up paddling experience, the San Marcos River offers a lot of fun. Consider renting a kayak for a more-relaxed float on the water.

While the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library is located in Austin, San Marcos was a major influence in his life. There’s no denying that the best day trip from Austin is to visit San Antonio Texas.

San Antonio is about an hour and a half drive from Austin . There are a few stops along the way to break up the drive. And, once you’re in San Antonio, there’s even more history, Mexican culture, and jaw-dropping sights to discover!

This is everything you need to know about going on a day trip from Austin to San Antonio Texas.

How To Get From Austin To San Antonio

The best way to go on a day trip from Austin to San Antonio is to rent a car and drive . It’s pretty easy drive, and as I said, there are a few stops you might want to check out along the way.

If you’d rather not drive, there is a bus you can take. It will be a lot cheaper than renting a car, but you are more limited by the departure schedule. You can see the bus times here .

There is also a train from Austin to San Antonio, but it doesn’t leave very often. You’d have to stay the night in San Antonio if you take the train from Austin. See the train schedule operated by Amtrak.

Renting A Car In Austin For A Day Trip To San Antonio

We rented our car at the airport in Dallas from Enterprise, but if you need to rent your car in Austin there’s no shortage of options.

As always, with renting a car for a day trip, ask if you can drop the car off after closing . Otherwise you may have to park it overnight at your hotel and bring it back the following morning ( which will likely mean paying for parking for the night !).

Parking In San Antonio Texas

Of course, because you’re driving to San Antonio, you’re going to need a place to park once you arrive.

There are quite a few paid parking lots in San Antonio. We ended up parking in the first lot we saw, which was about a 10 minute walk to the Alamo. But, there were a few closer lots if you’d prefer less of a walk.

They all seemed to follow the same system of pay by phone . If you’re traveling from outside the country, I would make sure to have a data plan so you can pay for parking. You’ll need to know your license plate and have a credit card.

San Antonio is a very walkable city, so once you’ve parked you won’t have to move the car. There are a few exceptions of course.

There are some activities just outside the city centre that you’ll want to drive to if you’re interested in them (you can always stop by these on your way back to Austin). Everything else is reachable by foot once you’re in the city centre.

As I said, the Austin to San Antonio drive is about an hour and a half. But, there are a few places you can stop if you want to break up the drive a bit.

Gruene Dance Hall

Gruene (pronounced Green with a Texan accent) is a small historical town halfway between Austin and San Antonio. It’s definitely worth checking out.

We stopped here on our drive back to Austin to visit the oldest dance hall in Texas (Gruene Dance Hall). The town itself was also a pretty happening place with live music and dancing.

If you can make it here a bit earlier, you can also eat dinner and go antique souvenir shopping ( for some Texas souvenir ideas, click here ).

Bussey’s Flea Market

If you’re driving down on the weekend, you can also stop by Bussey’s Flea Market for some unique souvenirs if you’re interested.

Natural Bridge Caverns

Go 180 feet below the earth to see intricate natural caverns.

It’s a bit out of the way on the Austin to San Antonio drive (adding about 20 minutes), but it is one of the top things to do in Texas.

Worlds Largest Cowboy Boots

I mean, you are in Texas after all! You have to stop to see the worlds largest cowboy boots. Funnily enough, these are at the entrance to a regular suburban shopping mall…

This is a quick stop, so you can park in the mall parking lot and cross the street (carefully) to see the boots up close.

Finally, You Have To Stop At A San Antonio Sign

There are actually two San Antonio signs. I think we found a really random one before even getting into San Antonio.

The Welcome to San Antonio sign is in the middle of nowhere (at a candy store!), but it’s not too far out of the way and right off the highway. You can park right in front for a quick photo op!

Or, there’s one closer to the city centre, right off the River Walk called the Greetings from San Antonio Mural .

Top San Antonio Texas Things To Do

There’s the perfect amount of things to do in San Antonio for a day trip from Austin.

Visit The Alamo

The Alamo is one of the top San Antonio Texas things to do. You can’t come here and not go on a tour of the Alamo, I mean, this is where it all went down in Texas history, the infamous battle at the Alamo between the Mexicans and Texas revolutionaries.

Tickets to the Alamo are actually free, but you still need a timed ticket to go inside. You can reserve your tickets here .

We booked our tickets for 11:00 am and had left Austin at around 8:30 A.M.. We arrived with enough time to see the Welcome to San Antonio sign, park, pick up coffees, and then walk back to the Alamo .

I recommend getting the audio guide for the Alamo . It will give you all the history and bring you to the main spots inside this historic site. Alternatively, you can go on a guided tour instead, but it is more expensive.

Expect the Alamo to be busy whenever you visit. We went midweek during low season, and it was filled with school kids! I imagine on the weekend, if it’s not school kids, there are just more people!

So I don’t know if there is ever a prime time to visit the Alamo in San Antonio Texas. Even at night I bet it’s filled with ghosts… p.s. there are ghost walking tours of San Antonio… check them out on Viator here . 

Walk On The San Antonio River Walk

The River Walk San Antonio is another not-to-be-missed thing to do.

The San Antonio River Walk was all really set up for HemisFair’ 68 (the 1968 World Fair). There was always river going through San Antonio, but it was only for the fair that they built it up with the walkway and all these restaurants you see today.

It’s such a lovely walk, which takes you through all San Antonio if you wanted it to. The main thing to do on the River Walk is to stop for a bite to eat!

You have to choose a restaurant with a patio of course! Try to skip any of the main restaurant chains and try something new! I recommend Domingo Restaurant , in the Canopy Hotel by Hilton.

You also want to make a point to walk along the river to La Valita Historical Village …

Should You Go On A Boat Tour Of The San Antonio River?

We didn’t feel the need to go on a boat tour of the river, but you definitely can! The river cruises are operated by Go Rio River Boat Tours , they have boat tours or simply a shuttle that will take you around the river without commentary.

La Villita Historical Village

Although La Villita looks like a bunch of tourist shops today, it’s still worth checking out. This is very much a historical district of San Antonio Texas that dates back to the 1800s .

They have signs set up throughout the village to read about the individual buildings, there’s also a small history museum that also offers free walking tours at 2:00 P.M. from Tuesday to Saturday.

Walk Along Houston Street

East Houston Street in San Antonio Texas is my favourite street , and turns out, it’s pretty historical too! It’s worth walking around to get a glimpse of unique architecture from the 19th and 20th centuries in Texas.

There are 8 information signs set up along the street as well that will take you on a tour of the architecture and the changes of Houston St over the years.

Points Of Interest Along Houston Street

La Panaderia is a Mexican style coffee shop that was actually featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives for it’s almond croissant. But, if you hadn’t had a chance to visit Voodoo Doughnut yet in Austin, you may need to stop there as well!

This is also where you’ll find Buckhorn Saloon for a very unique experience. It’s a restaurant but also a two for one museum (but really they just force you to pay for two museums…). See tickets here .

They have the Texas Ranger museum and the Buckhorn’s exotic animal collection (which is taxidermy animals)… the staff seemed pretty shocked that I wasn’t interested in the taxidermy collection… so I advise not going near this restaurant if you’re a bit squeamish of stuffed dead animals!

Historic Market Square: El Mercado Market

Welcome to Mexico! El Mercado is the the largest Mexican market in the nation , and it really feels like you’ve been transported to Mexico.

If you want some Mexican souvenirs, this is the place to go. They have an indoor market (which reminded me of a flea market) and an outdoor plaza with restaurants and more shops. We stopped at the Snack Bar (Mi Tierra Cafe) for some sweet bread and Mexican coffee.

P.S. This is probably the furthest place you’ll walk to all day, but don’t worry there are things to do in San Antonio along the way!

San Antonio Texas Things To Do In If You Have More Time

There are a few other smaller attractions that you might want to check out of you have more time on your day trip to San Antonio from Austin.

Book A Viator Tour San Antonio Texas

Admire the texas county courthouse.

We ended up here simply because we saw this jaw dropping red building in the distance. Turns out, it was the Bexar County Courthouse, and has been ever since it was built in 1896.

This land was actually home to the first Canary Island settlers in Texas though.

So, the Bexar County Courthouse is also a Heritage Centre. They have a free museum set up for you to learn more about the history. Find out more here .

Spanish Governor’s Palace

This is a quick stop on the way to (or way back from) El Mercado. It’s a short museum showcasing a Presidio from 1722.

A Presidio is a Spanish fortified base to protect a priest (at the Alamo in this case) and the new families that settled here. The Spanish Governor’s Palace, as it’s known today, was the home and office of the Captain of the Presidio.

The museum showcases how the building went through many changes over the years, from Presidio to commercial merchant buildings (including a pawn shop, saloon, and clothing store).

Pop By O. Henry’s House

O. Henry (not the chocolate bar) is actually a famous short story author who lived in Texas.

We had no idea about him before we visited his house in Austin. So only naturally, we also had to visit it in San Antonio too.

You’re supposed to be able to go inside, but it looked very much closed (and on the brink of falling a part) when we were there. But it isn’t out of the way back to the River Walk from El Mercado.

Casa Navarro State Historic Site

Another historic house you can visit on a day trip to San Antonio is the Casa Navarro State Historic Site.

This is another example of 1850s architecture in Texas. This was the home to José Antonio Navarro, one of two native-born Texans to sign the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Hemisfair Park – Tower Of The Americas

Hemisfair is a park in San Antonio that was used for the World Fair.

Today it houses the Tower of the Americas , which has an observation deck and restaurant.

The observation deck gives you a 360 degree view of San Antonio and the surroundings. Your ticket also includes an exhibit about the Six Flag of Texas (not the theme park!), and a 4D Theatre ride.

You can also enjoy lunch or dinner at the revolving restaurant .

Once you’re here, you should also stop for a photo op at the Alas de México (Wings of Mexico).

Things To Do Outside The San Antonio City Centre!

There are a few more things to do in San Antonio Texas that are just outside the city centre. You’ll want a car to get to these as they’re a bit too far to go on foot.

I would recommend heading here after your day in San Antonio on your way back to Austin.

If you’re interested in a very different part of the San Antonio River walk, head to the Grotto. These are intense looking cave tunnels along the river.

Pearl Brewery

Pearl Brewery might not look like much today – a very bougie hotel, restaurants, and some shops – but it was once the site of the largest brewery in Texas.

It was a brewery from 1883 until 2001, surviving prohibition and the Great Depression! Although it had many names over the years (including the San Antonio Brewing Company), Pearl brewery was just one of the many that lasted for about 30 years.

A brewery was brought back to this space only in 2015: Southerleigh Brewery – I wouldn’t exactly recommend the beer or the food… But I would recommend taking a walk in the hotel side – it’s an awesome renovated hotel that pays homage to the brewery.

Plus, the area is still pretty neat. With local shops (great for finding that perfect Texas souvenir! ), and on the weekends they have a farmers market.

You can also try Food Hall At Bottling Department instead . It’s more a food court style, so everyone can pick what they want (it also seemed less upscale)!

Japanese Tea Gardens Or San Antonio Botanical Gardens

We didn’t get a chance to visit either of these gardens but they both look beautiful!

The Japanese Tea Gardens are actually from 1901, and they feature a koi pond and waterfall. Sometimes they even hold events in the park as well, check to see if there’s any when you’re visiting here .

The San Antonio Botanical Gardens also has trails to walk through to admire the different plant species, with an indoor conservatory as well.

Don’t forget on the drive back to Austin, you’ll want to stop in Gruene to check out the night time live music scene!
