If you’ve landed on the idyllic shores of St Thomas, chances are you plan to spend a good chunk of your trip at the beach.

Yet with its storied history, rich culture and wild nature, there’s much more to do on this island than simply eat, beach, sleep and repeat (though there’s certainly nothing wrong with that). Here are 15 ways to make the most out of a trip to the beating heart of the US Virgin Islands (USVI) : our picks for the best things to do in St Thomas.

Shop on Main Street in Charlotte Amalie

Charlotte Amalie is one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean and its shops, tucked among colorful Danish colonial buildings on Main St, are a top draw. Most visitors head to places like AH Riise , which sells duty-free watches, jewelry, tobacco and liquor, but there are some more unusual spots that are likely better worth your time. Among the best is the Camille Pissarro Gallery , located in the childhood home of the famed Danish-French Impressionist. On display, you’ll see reproductions of his St Thomas scenes alongside works by contemporary USVI artists.

Swim at Magens Bay

Even though it’s one of the few beaches on St Thomas that demands an entry fee, a trip to Magens Bay is worth every penny. No other strip of sand in the USVI lies at the end of such a deep cove, giving Magens an stunning backdrop of emerald-green hills. With lifeguards, picnic tables, changing facilities, water sports and restaurants, this spot has everything a family could need to spend an entire day planted on the pearl-white sands.

Drink and dine in Frenchtown

The island’s “Frenchies” – Huguenots who emigrated to St Thomas from St-Barths during the mid-19th century – first populated this community of brightly painted frame houses on the western side of Charlotte Amalie Harbor. Nowadays, this fishermen’s neighborhood has several good restaurants that overlook the water, including the seafood bistro Oceana . You’ll also find craft beer at Frenchtown Brewing (try the citrusy Hop Alley IPA) and a sprawling wine list at The Twisted Cork .

Take a day trip to Virgin Islands National Park

While St Thomas is heavily developed, two-thirds of neighboring St John is protected within the Virgin Islands National Park , making it a fantastic spot to escape the crowds. Popular half-day hikes in the park’s limits include the Lind Point Trail, which snakes away from the ferry dock in Cruz Bay over to the secluded Honeymoon Beach, and the Reef Bay Trail, which traverses dense woodlands down to ancient petroglyphs and more recent sugar-mill ruins. Smaller nature trails at Cinnamon Bay and Francis Bay are perfect for the little ones.

Explore USVI history at Fort Christian

This striking red-brick fort in Charlotte Amalie dates back to 1672, when it was used as a point of defense for that Dano-Norwegian government that administered the island during the colonial era. Today, it houses a small museum that tackles the complex history of the Virgin Islands, from its earliest Indigenous residents to the slaves brought over from West Africa to work on sugar plantations. Think of it as a vital stop to contextualize your experience, particularly if you sign up in advance for a guided tour.

Listen to calypso music

Calypso music is the soundtrack to life in the Virgin Islands. Many resorts hire bands to play on set nights each week, including Bolongo Bay Beach Resort and the Ritz Carlton’s Coconut Cove . You can also find steel-pan groups performing in Frenchtown or Yacht Haven Grande . The best time to listen to calypso, however, is during the month-long Carnival celebrations (typically in April or May) when artists compete for titles like Calypso Monarch or Best Junior Calypsonian.

Climb the “99 Steps”

Rising from Kongens Gade up past historic homes to a scenic viewpoint overlooking the Charlotte Amalie Harbor, this step-street – or frigang , as the Danes called them – is one of the best free things to do on the island. Bougainvillea and hibiscus spill over wooden railings onto the path, making it an atmospheric walk with plenty of romantic spots for a photo opp. Oh, and if 99 steps sounds like a lot, the actual count is 103 .

Kayak the Mangrove Lagoon to Cas Cay

On the southeastern coast of St Thomas, the Cas Cay-Mangrove Lagoon Marine Reserve is an idyllic place for a morning paddle. As you squeeze through narrow mangrove alleyways, you can search for colorful birds such as the green-throated carib or red-billed tropicbird. Virgin Islands Ecotours runs kayaking trips through the Mangrove Lagoon that include snorkeling around a shipwreck and a short hike on the uninhabited Cas Cay. They also rent kayaks or paddleboards for a DIY adventure.

Take a food tour

At first glance, St Thomas can seem overrun with generic restaurants serving pizzas, burgers and Caesar salads. That’s because  traditional West Indian cuisine  tends to be further back from the seafront and off the beaten path. If you need helping finding local flavors, enlist the help of the guides at St Thomas Food Tours , who will introduce you to everything from rum cakes to conch fritters and callaloo on a 2.5-hour trip around Charlotte Amalie.

People snorkel the blue waters next to a catamaran by the sands of Buck Island National Park, St Croix, US Virgin Islands, USA

Charter a boat to explore further afield

Chartering a boat is one of the most popular activities on St Thomas since it’s the only practical way to explore outer islands and remote reefs. Typical itineraries revolve around either snorkeling (perhaps at Lovango Cay, Buck Island or Little St James) or bar-hopping (perhaps at White Bay on Jost Van Dyke or a floating restaurant like Pizza Pi ). Most charters leave from marinas either near Red Hook or Benner Bay on the East End of St Thomas since trips tend to head toward St John or the British Virgin Islands .

Get cultured at Tillett Gardens

Far from the typical tourist circuit in the Anna’s Retreat sector is this colorful artists’ colony , which lures the island’s hippies, thinkers and outsiders for all sorts of creative pursuits. Not only is there a 150-seat theater, but also art galleries with painting classes, quirky coffee shops and live reggae music on the weekends. Nearby, be sure to check out Mango Tango , where the quality of contemporary art on display far exceeds anything you’ll find in downtown Charlotte Amalie.

Enjoy less touristy nightlife in Red Hook

If Charlotte Amalie comes alive during the day, it’s Red Hook that keeps the party going well into the night. This small port town in the East End is where island residents go to hang out after the cruise tourists depart for the evening, tossing back rum and cokes at long-running favorites like the tiki-themed Duffy’s Love Shack , which bills itself as “the best parking lot bar in the world.” Other late-night choices include the Tap & Still (for craft beer) and the Island Time Pub (for moonlit harbor views).

Snorkel with sea turtles at Brewers Bay

Tucked away behind the airport – and in front of the University of the Virgin Islands – Brewers Bay has always attracted more locals than tourists. (Perhaps that’s why all the sea turtles and stingrays feel like it’s one of the safest places around for them to swim?) This low-key spot is a great place to tune in to the vibe of island life, grabbing a beer and a pate (fried pastries stuffed with meat) from one of the food trucks after you’ve spent time communing with the sea creatures.

See where the Caribbean and Atlantic meet

There’s a small strip of sand on the wild western tip of St Thomas where the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean meet. Known as Mermaid’s Chair, it’s one of the USVI’s best-kept secrets. This rare double-sided beach (which is best viewed at low tide) is reached via a 1.3-mile (2km) hike, which begins at The Preserve at Botany Bay, descending from there to some spectacular viewpoints and quiet rocky coves. Good walking shoes are a must.

Take the ferry to Water Island

Located just 15 minutes by ferry from St Thomas, tiny Water Island feels delightfully remote, with few shops or restaurants and just 200 permanent residents who get around in golf carts. Expect great hiking, biking and kayaking, as well as three sandy beaches, the most famous of which, Honeymoon Beach , bursts to life at lunchtime when it swells with thirsty day-trippers. The Virgin Islands Campground , an eco-resort here with self-contained wood and canvas cottages, is one of the few glamping experiences in the Caribbean and a great reason to spend the night.

A snorkeler swims alongside a sea turtle in the clear blue waters of St Thomas, showcasing the vibrant marine life around the island.

Coki Beach , Buck Island, and Secret Harbor are some of my favorite snorkeling spots on the island. The Virgin Islands boast some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world, and many are e asily accessible from the coast.

You’ll find vibrant marine life on almost every beach on the island. Not keen on snorkeling alone? No worries—there are plenty of snorkel tours available to guide you through the underwater wonders.

2. Go Parasailing

A person parasails high above the ocean in St Thomas, enjoying stunning aerial views of the island and surrounding waters.

For a bird’s-eye view of these near transparent waters, parasailing is a perfect choice on a clear day. On those clear days, you’ll catch breathtaking views of the surrounding islands .

It’s an experience that offers a unique perspective you can’t get anywhere else (except maybe an airplane, but this is way more fun!).

I went parasailing on a trip between St John and St Thomas by accident – we ran into a crew on the beach that had some extra time and offered to take us up (this was a long time ago, but it was an experience I’ll NEVER forget!!).

3. Kayak Around Cas Cay

A little exercise, a little adventure, and a lot of great views. Kayak through lagoons and make your way to Cas Cay island to hike around the deserted island and check out Red Point Blow Hole , a unique geological formation, while you’re there!

Some Cas Cay tours also include hiking and snorkeling , where you’ll find mangroves and schools of fish on your journey around the island.

One of my favorite things to do in any Caribbean Island: take a sunset cruise and enjoy the incredible orange-colored skies from the waters surrounding the island.

5. Scuba Dive Through the Reefs

Girl scuba diving with "a okay" hand signs

St. Thomas offers well-protected coral reefs and shipwrecks , perfect for all you scuba divers out there! Whether you're into shark dives, lobster dives, or reef dives, there's something for every diver. Not certified?

No problem—diving certifications and open water dives are available.

7. Bordeaux Farmers' Market

Twice a month, local farmers gather to exchange fruits, vegetables, and delicious local cuisine.

It's a perfect opportunity to engage with the community, taste local snacks, and purchase unique souvenirs.

8. Illuminated Night Kayaking

After a sun-filled day, try something different - an illuminated night kayaking tour ! There are a few companies that leave from Marriott Frenchman Cove for after-dark kayaking trips.

Their kayaks feature illuminated bottoms so you can get a glimpse of the marine life after dark. This isn't the bioluminescence that you'll find in St Croix , this is simply a little flashlight to see beneath the water at night!

If you love snorkeling in the day time, this is a unqiue way to enjoy the sealife when the sun sets.

⭐ Check pricing and availability for an illuminated Night Kayaking tour

6. Hike the Magens Bay Trail

A scenic view of Magens Bay in St Thomas, surrounded by lush greenery and clear blue waters.

Start your day hiking St Thomas on the 1.8-mile Magens Bay Trail. Enjoy great views and morning exercise.

Midway through, you'll reach Magens Bay Beach—a perfect spot to cool off. This hike is one of my favorite ways to see some of the most spectacular views of the island.

9. John Brewer’s Rock Scenic Hike

For another hiking adventure, try the trail to John Brewer’s Rock. The views are more than worth the trek! John Brewer's is a great option for beginner or intermediate hikers.

10. Black Point Cape

Black Point is a small peninsula located off Brewers Bay Beach. To get to it, you'll need to take a short walk on the beach and a little bit of rock scrambling, but once you get there, you'll have an empty little oasis for relaxing and checking out the marine life.

The rock scramble is not for beginner hikers or flip flops, so if you choose this option, make sure you're prepared.

11. Brewers Bay Beach

Brewers Bay Beach shoreline

Brewers Bay is a white sand beach located near the University of St Thomas. Being close to the university, it's a popular beach best for relaxing for the day.

You won't find coral reefs around here near the shore, so it's not your normal snorkel spot, but it is known for having sea turtles and stingrays off shore.

PROTIP : Sunscreen that isn't considered reef safe is illegal in the Virgin Islands. Be sure to stock up on sunscreen free of toxins like Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, and Octocrylene.

12. Shop and Explore Downtown Charlotte Amalie!

charlotte amalie lit up at sunset

For the shopping lovers, Charlotte Amalie is St Thomas' downtown. It's also the capital of the US Virgin Islands! You'll find some incredible shops, boutiques, and restaurants here.

You'll also find - Vendor Plaza is a great spot to haggle for your souvenirs - Havensight Mall - Yacht Haven Grande for upscale shopping Pro Tip: USVI has a $1600 duty-free limit for US citizens , making it a great shop-till-you-drop vacation!

14. Yacht Haven Grande

Along with the upscale shops in Yacht Haven Grande, you can post up and watch the ravish yachts coming in and out of the marina. This newer, waterfront development offers spectacular views. It may be a bit pricey, but you can still enjoy an afternoon checking it out.

15. Secret Harbor Beach Snorkeling

Secret Harbor is another fantastic beach in St Thomas to spend the day especially if you love snorkeling. This beach is known for its double reef, unsurpringsly one of the best spots for snorkeling on the island.

The calm waters are great for swimming, and nearby restaurants make it easy to spend the whole day there. PROTIP: Hang around until sunset - the restaurants around here have A++ sunset viewing!

16. Coral World Ocean Park

Experience the wildlife in the USVI at Coral World Ocean Park. The park offers a range of experiences like dolphin kayaking, sea lion swims, and getting up close and personal with sharks.

Coral World focuses on maintaining the island's ecosystems and educating on ocean literacy with its exhibits and interactive opportunities for attendees.

General Admission to Coral World for the whole family - ⭐ Get your Coral World Ocean Park tickets! Get close and personal with the coral reefs and marine life (GA to Coral World included!) ⭐ Book a SNUBA Excursion at Coral World!

17. St. Thomas Botanical Gardens

These gorgeous gardens bloom all year long in St. Thomas's warm weather conditions.

They focus on maintaining and educating about tropical plants . Where else can you get a whole botanical garden of tropical plants?!

St Thomas Botanical Gardens also offer educational events and group rates throughout the year.

18. Zipline over the Virgin Islands!

A group of adventurers crossing a narrow rope bridge high above a lush green forest in St Thomas. They are wearing helmets and harnesses for safety as they navigate the suspended path, highlighting an exhilarating eco-adventure experience in the Caribbean.

Adrenaline junkies, there's something for you here too!! Zipline over St. Thomas with Tree Limin' Extreme .

Enjoy sky-high views of Magen’s Bay and the British Virgin Islands —a thrilling way to see the island from above.

19. Spend the Day at Buck Island

Buck Island is federally protected land known as Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge . The reefs and marine life are actually located right off the coast of St Thomas, the second largest island of the USVI.

This protected land is a must-do when you visit USVI. Because the land is protected, only a few tours are available, so be sure to plan as soon as you can!

⭐ Head to Little Buck Island on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure with The VI Catamaran

20. Take a Ferry to St. John

wide coast line in St John with a bird walking towards the lush greenery at the end of the beach

While you might be vacationing in St Thomas, the USVI has even more to offer!

St John's is the smallest of the three islands, and without a doubt, my favorite.

The best part? Getting from St Thomas to St John is an affordable 30-minute ferry ride and there's no question it's worth visiting.

On the other side of your ferry ride, you'll find white sandy beaches, pristinely clear water, and friendly locals. If you get lucky, you might find some of St. John's famous donkey residents approaching your car window.

PS: Please don't feed the donkeys - it spreads sickness between the animals and the few vets on the islands don't have the resources to take care of all of them. You can learn about the island's wildlife here.

21. Charter a Yacht

Charter a Yacht for you and your friends to feel like royalty for the day! Head to some of the most pristine beaches on the island, enjoy a day of drinking in the sun, snorkeling, and maybe stopping at the Floating Taco Boat, "LIME OUT!"

⭐ view pricing and availability for St Thomas and St John charters

22. Skyride to Paradise Point

One of the most unique things to do in St. Thomas is riding the tram! The Sky Ride is the perfect way to see the island from a whole new perspective.

This unique experience allows you to soar through the air on a tram, enjoying stunning views of the Caribbean Sea as you go.

The Skyride to Paradise Point takes you 700 feet up and provides you with the best views of St. Thomas and Charlotte Amalie Harbor.

Tip: The best time to go is around sunset when you can also see the city of Charlotte Amalie lit up.

The Sky Ride is located near some of the island's most popular attractions, making it the perfect activity for both locals and visitors alike.

Attractions nearby include St. Peter Greathouse and Botanical Gardens, Yacht Haven Grande Shops, and West India Company Dock with restaurants and shopping.

Coral World Ocean Park is right across from the tram and is a popular place to see sharks and other sea life.

Whether you're looking for an adrenaline-pumping thrill or simply want to take in the scenery, Sky Ride in St. Thomas is sure to be a memorable experience.

23. Take a Fishing Charter Out for a Day

There are two famous fishing areas off the shore of St Thomas. The North Drop and The South Drop are both known for their big game.

Off Shore Adventures offers half and full-day charters all around USVI. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a beginner, there's a fishing charter for you on the island.

24. Lunch at the Floating Taco Boat, "Lime Out!"

Talk about a bucket list item!! Since 2019, Lime Out has been serving tacos and cocktails outside its floating restaurant on pontoons in the middle of the salty sea!

If you're a foodie, not only is this a unique dining experience, but the chef, Chef Amaro Rivera, has worked in several renowned Puerto Rican restaurants as well. I'm not sure how often they change their menu, but the short rib taco was my favorite.

**Lime Out is accessible by boat only . Grab your own charter or hop on one of the awesome tours to one of the coolest restaurants in the Caribbean.

🤩 Check pricing and availability for trips to Lime Out

25. Head to the British Virgin Islands for a Day

A serene beach scene with clear turquoise waters gently lapping against a sandy shore, where visitors are scattered and enjoying the sun. Large, weathered boulders rise from the landscape, adding a rugged contrast to the tranquil tropical setting.

Ready to check another country off your list? The ferry from St. Thomas to Tortola runs every day of the week. $60 + port fees will get you on the 1-hour trip.

If you're a hiker, the tallest mountain in the US and the British Virgin Islands is located on Tortola. Sage Mountain National Park has tons of trails and awesome views. You'll also want to check out The Baths and Smugglers Cove. PROTIP: Don't forget your passport, BVI is not a US territory !

26. Taste Your Way through St Thomas

St. Thomas is a paradise for food lovers, offering a variety of tours that let you savor the island's best dishes and drinks. Trust me, these locals know how to whip up a great Caribbean meal.

Dive into a foodie adventure where you can explore the island, learn to craft cocktails, and taste authentic Caribbean cuisine.

Whether you choose a tour focused on drinks, culture, or food, you're in for a treat. You'll quickly learn why St. Thomas is a culinary hotspot in the Caribbean .

🤩 Taste your way through St Thomas on a Walking Food Tour

27. St Thomas Synagogue

The St Thomas Synagogue is the second oldest Synagogue in the western hemisphere. Uniquely, the historic synagogue still functions as a place of worship for the Jewish Community on the island and is complete with sand floors!

Much of the original construction has been preserved since the early 1800s. Add this to the free things to do here , as the synagogue offers free tours lasting 15 minutes to an hour so you can enjoy this beautiful, historic synagogue and the history of the Jewish community in St Thomas.

28. Pirates Treasure Museum

Located in the Buccaneer Mall on St Thomas, the Pirates Treasure Museum offers hands-on exhibits and stories of the deep sea! There's a surprising amount of pirate history in USVI.

The staff at the Pirates Treasure Museum is knowledgeable about the shipwrecks and treasures the museum carries. They also have a shop where you can pick up your own pirate artifacts!

29. Climb the 99 Steps

looking up from the bottom of 99 steps in st thomas surrounded by green bushes and pink flowers

These historic steps were made from ported ship's ballast bricks to help locals navigate up the steep Charlotte Amalie terrain.

There are actually 103 steps, surrounded by flower beds. The stairs lead to another historic site.. Blackbeard's Castle! Read on for more.

30. Blackbeard's Castle

No need to fear, Blackbeard isn't here. Whether Blackbeard ever visited this castle is up for debate! Blackbeard's Castle is one of the most historic on the island with manors and land dating back to the 1600s.

Choose from a self-paced walking tour or a guided tour around the 5-acre landmark. 8/1/2024 Update : Unfortunately, the inside of the castle is under construction while they redo damage from Hurricane Irma. It's still a great place to visit to walk around and enjoy the views from the top of the hill!

31. Frederick Lutheran Church

The church was built in 1793. Frederick Lutheran Church's unique architecture attracts visitors from all over. It has been rebuilt from fires and hurricanes over the years, functioned as a church and school, and currently hosts Sunday service each week.

32. Fort Christian

Historic forts named after the Danish King and built in 1676. Fort Christian is easy accessbily as its located right in Charlotte Amalie! There's no excuse to not stop by!

You can view the museum's exhibits and forts Monday-Friday. Enjoy collections from the Stone Age and beyond from furniture to history to art and more.

33. Take a ferry to Water Island

Looking for a unique day trip? Hop on the Water Island ferry , a charming little boat that shuttles back and forth to this tiny island off the coast of St. Thomas.

Water Island is home to less than 200 residents live in St Thomas 's Water Island, making it a real "off-the-beaten-path" adventure.

Pro tip: rent a golf cart from Rachael's Rentals to explore the island and enjoy a relaxing day on its beautiful beaches. It’s the perfect way to add a bit of adventure to your St. Thomas itinerary!

34. Market Square

This busy historic street brings vendors from all over the island to come and sell produce, fish, and survivors. The best time to visit Market Square is Saturday mornings!

The square's main landmark is a cast iron bungalow, that was built in the early 20th century. Market Square was previously the busiest slave-trading market in the indies.

35. Have a Picnic on the Beach!

What better way to soak up the sun and enjoy the scenery of St. Thomas than with a picnic on the beach? Some of my favorite beaches in St Thomas are Coki Beach, Lindquist Beach, Sapphire Beach, and Lindbergh Bay.

Each offers gorgeous views and the perfect backdrop for a picnic in the sand. Pack a basket with local snacks and drinks and unwind. It’s a simple way to experience the island's charm!

Getting Around St Thomas

St Thomas has plenty of options for getting around whether you're looking to off-road or travel the main road destinations.

Renting a car is your best option for getting around St Thomas.

A car will typically cost between $100-$150 per day, while an SUV will cost closer to $200 per day.

A sedan will get you around the island. The benefits to an SUV? Some roads are not well maintained or have been damaged in past hurricanes. The island is also incredibly hilly and some of the terrain can be steep and difficult to get a small car up.

Because of the difficult terrain, unless you plan to stay in the flat city areas, it's not suggested to rent a scooter to get around.

⭐My Local USVI Partners –  Key N Go Car Rental  (Use  CaribbeanUncovered  to let them know I sent you! Pro Tip: It's a small island with minimal rentals, so reserve your car ASAP!

Take a Taxi

You won't have any trouble finding taxis, especially in busier areas like Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook. Note that there is no Uber service here .

From most hotels to beaches or popular attractions, taxis will cost between $8-$15 per person. Note that you'll pay per person for any taxi rides you take! Because of this, if you have a larger crew, it's definitely worth renting a car !

Keep a list of taxi services on hand in case you end up in a less popular area. Many taxi services run 24/7 and you can schedule a pickup wherever you are.

Open-Air Safari Busses

Safari buses are the best and most convenient option for public transportation. Though the VITRAN (USVI's bus system) runs throughout the island, they have few stops and don't run very often.

Safari busses travel through the main roads of the island and are known for being nicknamed "Dollar Safari Busses". Most rides will cost $1-$2 max. There are a few different types of Safari Busses, so make sure you're jumping on a dollar safari bus before you get on.

The safari buses stay on the main roads. They'll drop you off as close as they can to your destination, but ask the driver how far your walk will be!

Where to Stay in St Thomas

You'll find plenty of hotels in Charlotte Amalie or resorts on the beach , depending on your preference and budget.

  • Book The Green Iguana Hotel for island views downtown in Charlotte Amalie
  • Book the Ritz-Carlton in Red Hook for a luxury island vacation
  • Any of the awesome luxury villas in St Thomas

St Thomas USVI Planning Tips

How to travel to st thomas usvi.

Caribbean, St. Thomas, USVI. Cable car at Heavensight

St Thomas USVI is the northernmost of the US Virgin Islands, found east of Puerto Rico and west of its neighbor St John. The city of Charlotte Amalie is the usual departure and arrival point on the island as a whole.

Many travelers will arrive on one of the many, many cruise ships that call into the beautiful harbor there during the peak sailing season.

The island’s international airport mainly serves the US mainland and is well connected to US cities on the east coast such as Miami and New York, from where there are connections worldwide.

The airport also has routes to the other US Virgin Islands, as well as many other Caribbean islands in the area.

From St Thomas, there are regular ferries to the other islands. St Johns is just a short boat ride away, while St Croix, the largest and most remote of the islands is a good two or three hours away by ferry.

The British Virgin Islands are extremely close, and can also be reached easily by boat.

Check out this guide if arriving by cruise ship: Fodor’s Caribbean Cruise Ports of Call

Best Time to Visit St Thomas USVI

St. John, USVIs at Trunk Bay

The Virgin Islands are hot all year round, and St Thomas is no exception. The temperature is subtropical, and the year can be divided into wet and dry seasons.

The wet season is hurricane season when the weather is stormy, and hurricanes have been known to ravage the island, most recently in 2017.

Be careful if planning a trip between June and November. Prices will be lower and the cruise ships won’t be filling the harbor, but the weather may turn for the worse, very quickly.

High season is the dry season when temperatures are hot and the skies are clear.

This is cruise ship season too of course when the island will be at its busiest. The high season generally runs from December to April.

Where to Stay in St Thomas USVI

Accommodation can be found spread out across St Thomas, with options available in the central area of Charlotte Amalie, as well in various, more secluded bays and coastal areas.

Many hotels were damaged in the recent 2017 hurricane season, and have been closed since for recovery, so always check the hotels are functioning at their best before booking. Even still, you can find great places to stay no matter your budget.

Whether you are looking for something a little fancier like The Ritz-Carlton  or Point Pleasant Resort to something a little more low key and budget-friendly like the Galleon House Bed & Breakfast or Midtown Guest House , St Thomas has accommodation to meet every traveler’s needs.

Travel Around St Thomas

St Thomas USVI

The US Virgin Islands are unusual because they are the only US territory where vehicles drive on the left. If you are coming from the US this may be a surprise, so take care if renting a vehicle or when crossing roads in St Thomas.

The city of Charlotte Amalie can easily be navigated on foot, however hiring a vehicle is the most efficient way to see all the sights around the rest of St Thomas, and the island is small enough to be traversed in a day if you so desire.

If you prefer, there are plenty of tour agencies too, usually based in Charlotte Amalie, that can arrange either private or group tours to the major tourist spots.

Safety in St Thomas USVI

Fragment of sculpture garden at the tropical island in Caribbean

St Thomas is generally a very safe island to visit, however, the main city of Charlotte Amalie has been known to experience periods of crime against tourists.

This is fueled mainly by the huge quantity of tourists arriving on cruise ships, and unsavory characters taking advantage by attempting thefts and pickpocketing on unsuspecting visitors.

The Best Things to Do in St. Thomas

Now on to the fun stuff — here are the top things to do in St. Thomas for a good time in the US Virgin Islands!

1. Bask Under the Sun at Magens Bay Beach

Golden white sandy beach with clear blue waters and a lush mountain behind it, which is Magens Bay Beach and one of the best things to do on Saint Thomas.

I’m starting this list of the best things to do on St. Thomas with one of my favorite spots and one of the very best things to do in St. Thomas: Magens Bay Beach.

When you think of dreamy beach destinations, it’s hard to beat this postcard-perfect strip of powdery white sand beach and glistening turquoise waters.

Spanning 1.5 miles long, Magens Bay is consistently ranked among the world’s best beaches — and when you see it for yourself, you’ll understand why!

There are plenty of activities for you to enjoy here, including swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, kayaking, taking a stroll along the shoreline, and more.

The best part about visiting Magens Bay Beach is that there’s no entrance fee.

A woman sitting on a beach chair at Magens Bay Beach holding a strawberry daiquiri with the beach in the background, which is one of many things to do on St Thomas Virgin Islands.

You can easily rent beach chairs and umbrellas at a little kiosk right behind the beach, so all you have to bring is towels and reef-safe sunscreen .

And what’s a great beach day without delicious cocktails and mocktails?

Magens Point Bar and Grill is right on the beach, and they serve up a fantastic banana daiquiri for when you need to cool off from the Caribbean heat!

St. Thomas is a popular spot for cruise ships, so if you want to avoid crowds, try visiting Magens Bay early in the morning or later in the afternoon when the ships leave.

2. Go Sea Trek Helmet Diving at Coral World Ocean Park

Colorful fish and coral reefs under the ocean.

If you’ve wanted to explore the fascinating underwater world without learning how to scuba dive, look no further than the Sea Trek Helmet Diving Experience at Coral World Ocean Park .

All you have to do is put on a special dive helmet that allows you to breathe underwater, and then you can explore the aquarium’s underwater trails along the ocean floor.

Located in the East End of St Thomas, you’ll be surrounded by colorful fish and coral reefs in this one-of-a-kind experience while you learn all about the marine life that calls this place home.

Coral World Ocean Park also has other activities, such as a stingray pool, sea turtle encounters, and swimming with sea lions, but I don’t condone any activities that involve mistreating sea life or forcing them to behave in a manner inconsistent with their natural behavior in their natural environment.

So please stick to the helmet diving experience and enjoy the breathtaking natural beauty of St. Thomas without taking away from it.

4. Explore the Historic District of Charlotte Amalie

Pink and blue buildings with shops in the historic district of Charlotte Amalie.

Besides the beach, there are also several amazing things to do in St. Thomas’s capital city, Charlotte Amalie.

It was founded in 1666 by the Danish West India and Guinea Company as a major port city for the area’s trade, and it was one of the most important Caribbean cities in its heyday.

Today, Charlotte Amalie is still a bustling town full of galleries, restaurants, shopping outlets, outdoor activities, and a major cruise port.

Wander around the downtown area, and the gorgeous cobblestone streets and brightly-colored colonial buildings from the Danish era will surround you!

Below, I’ll briefly highlight some of the must-see attractions and things to do in Charlotte Amalie:

Fort Christian

An orange clocktower and brick building known as Fort Christian.

Fort Christian is the oldest building in the city and dates back to 1680.

It was built in defense of the city by the Danish during their occupation of St. Thomas, and it served as a prison, a police station, and even the governor’s residence at one point in time.

Today, this historical site houses a museum that contains an extensive collection of artifacts from St. Thomas’s colonial period as well as items related to its history.

Blackbeard’s Castle

A brick watchtower with two flags at the top which is Blackbeard's Castle.

Blackbeard’s Castle is one of the five National Historic Landmarks in the United States Virgin Islands and was initially known as Skytsborg Tower.

It’s rumored that the infamous English pirate Blackbeard used the tower as a lookout point and to store his treasure.

We don’t really know if the story is true, but it makes for a great tale!

It has since been transformed into one of the coolest things to do in St. Thomas, and it offers breathtaking views of the harbor and the Atlantic Ocean.

Unfortunately, due to Hurricane Irma, Blackbeard’s Castle is temporarily closed, but it should reopen in the future. You can still see the castle, but you can’t go inside at the moment.

99 Steps, a walkway of steps, lined with pink flowers and palm trees.

The 99 Steps is one of the most iconic landmarks in St. Thomas and dates back to the 1700s.

It consists of a steep set of stairs that lead up to Blackbeard’s Castle, and it was used by the Danish to get around the city’s hilly streets.

The sides of the steps are lined with flowers and plants making it a picturesque spot to take some photos!

Spoiler alert — there are actually 103 steps, but who’s counting?

What Is the Best Month to Go to St. Thomas?

A rainbow peeking over the mountains over the water in St. Thomas.

The best time to visit St. Thomas varies depending on what you want to do and what your preferences are.

If you’re looking for the best weather, December through April is the best time to visit.

There’s very little rainfall during these months, and the temperatures hover in the low-to mid-80s°F.

The only downfall to visiting during these months is that it’s peak tourist season which means the island is busier and hotel prices jump up a lot.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for great deals on accommodation and don’t mind a bit of precipitation, May through November is the best time to visit St. Thomas.

The island experiences a lot of rainfall in these months (it doesn’t rain all day, every day — it comes in bursts), but temperatures stay consistent, and hotel prices dip significantly lower than during peak season.

This is also hurricane season, so keep an eye on the weather if you’re going during this time and  purchase travel insurance  to protect your trip.

What Is the Best Way to Get to St. Thomas Virgin Islands?

Cruise terminal in St. Thomas with a blue and white docked cruise ship.

There are two ways you can get to St. Thomas — flying or cruising.

Cyril E. King Airport (STT) is the main airport serving St. Thomas, and it’s located just a few miles away from downtown Charlotte Amalie.

If you’d prefer to cruise, St. Thomas has two cruise ports — Crown Bay Marina and West Indian Company Dock (also known as Havensight).

What Is the Best Way to Get Around St. Thomas?

Once you’re on the island, you have a few options for getting around.

The most convenient way to get around is by taking a taxi , but they are pretty pricey and add up quickly.

Renting a car  is the best way to get around St. Thomas if you plan on exploring more than just Charlotte Amalie, as most of the attractions are located in different parts of the island.

You’re free to explore at your own pace, and you don’t have to worry about flagging down a taxi and blowing your budget on transportation.

Just remember to drive on the left side of the road!

🚗 Want to rent a car?  Expedia  is the best option in St. Thomas. Not only do they offer competitive prices and a vast selection of vehicles from reputable car rental companies, but they also provide a seamless booking process that allows you to compare prices and choose your preferred vehicle with ease.  Book your car rental through Expedia today!

Alternatively, there’s also a public bus system that runs throughout St. Thomas, but it can be crowded, slow, and unreliable.

Helpful Tips for Visiting St. Thomas

When planning your trip to St. Thomas, there are a few important things to keep in mind so you can make the most of your stay.

👉  Pack reef-safe sunscreen and insect repellent:  St. Thomas is a tropical paradise, which means its lush vegetation is home to some pesky bugs, and the sun is intense. Pack reef-safe sunscreen to protect your skin and insect repellent so you can keep those pesky bugs at bay!

👉  Stay hydrated:  The hot and humid climate in St. Thomas can lead to dehydration, so make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

👉  Use U.S. currency:  St. Thomas is a part of the United States Virgin Islands, so the official currency is the U.S. dollar.

👉  Check local weather reports:  Hurricane season in the Caribbean runs from June through November, so be sure to check local weather reports before planning outdoor activities or traveling during this time.

👉  Try local cuisine:  The island boasts a diverse culinary scene with many restaurants serving traditional Caribbean dishes like conch fritters and johnnycakes. Don’t be afraid to try something new!

👉  Rent a car:  While taxis are available on the island, they can get pretty pricey, and renting a car gives you more freedom to explore all that St. Thomas has to offer at your own pace.

👉  Keep left:  Speaking of driving, remember that you’ll be driving on the left side of the road in St. Thomas, so make sure you adjust to this before hitting the roads!

👉  Dedicate most of your budget to food:  Not only is the food delicious in St. Thomas, but it’s also expensive due to its remote location and reliance on imports. I got serious sticker shock when I visited. So, make sure you devote a good chunk of your budget to food!

👉  Carry cash:  While credit cards are accepted at some of the larger establishments, many of the mom-and-pop shops accept only cash. If you exclusively use American Express, keep in mind that many places won’t accept it.

Fun Things to Do in St. Thomas

By Author Laura Longwell

Posted on Last updated: June 24, 2024

Just a few hours from the East Coast, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, is an ideal Caribbean getaway. The water is brilliant blue, the beaches are outstanding, and there is an incredible variety of good food options. From historic sites to dazzling views to activities that will get your adrenaline pumping, there are lots of fun things to do in St. Thomas.

We’ve visited St. Thomas several times in the past but always on cruises. We recently had the chance to explore the island in depth to see more of what there is to do in this beautiful place. Here’s a look at some of our favorites.

See the view at Mountain Top

Hand holding a yellow cup labeled

One of the most popular attractions, especially for cruise ship passengers, Mountain Top has several claims to fame. At 2,100 feet above sea level on the top of St. Peter Mountain, its most notable feature is its stunning views. You can see not only Magens Bay beach below, but views extend all the way to Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands.

Mountain Top also bills itself as the island’s largest gift shop. There are plenty of souvenir t-shirts, beach bags, and more, often at lower prices than other places on the island. After browsing, we like to enjoy the view while sipping a banana daiquiri made at the bar where it was invented in the 1950s. Giant signs overhead proclaim that over 7 million have been sold here, though it’s surely more than that.

Visit Emancipation Garden

Statue of a man blowing a conch shell in a park with benches and trees.

Emancipation Garden commemorates the freeing of enslaved people in St. Thomas by the Danish governor on July 3, 1848, 15 years before the Emancipation Proclamation did the same in the US. A commemorative plaque and a bronze bust of a newly freed man blowing a conch shell mark the location, along with a small replica of the Liberty Bell.

Located near Charlotte Amalie’s waterfront, the park provides a shady place to take a break near some of the popular sites. Throughout the year, it is the location of special events, including the inauguration ceremonies for the governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Emancipation Day festivities. At Christmas, the park is filled with lights and decorations, making it a must see during the holidays.

Climb the 99 Steps

Staircase with palm trees on one side.

The hills rising around Charlotte Amalie are full of steep streets. Perhaps the most visited by tourists are the 99 Steps, which were built by the Danes in the 1700s.

Actually clocking in at 103 steps, the 99 Steps are one of the most well-known landmarks in St. Thomas. Not far from historic Fort Christian and the Emancipation Garden, they lead visitors to a nice view of the island and close to the foot of Blackbeard’s Castle, though that National Historic Landmark is currently closed.

Relax at the local beaches

Blue ocean water and a white sand beach with hilly islands in the distance in St. Thomas.

Visiting the island’s stunning beaches is one of the best things to do in St. Thomas. Our favorites range from a pristine park with white sand at Lindquist Beach to the tourist favorite Magens Bay Beach , which features rental chairs and a full beach bar and restaurant. Some spots like Coki Beach offer chances for great shore diving, or you can head to Sapphire Beach for snorkeling and gorgeous views. We’ve been to all four of these beaches (and more) and promise that it’s hard to go wrong here.

Go snorkeling

Close up of a sea turtle swimming in the ocean.

Nearly every beach on St. Thomas offers a chance to see something unique just a few yards from shore, so it’s a great place to go snorkeling. Depending on how busy the beaches are and how deep the water is, plant and animal life vary, but there’s almost always something cool from sea urchins and brain coral to sea turtles and stingrays. We have the most flexibility traveling with our own snorkels , but a few of the beaches offer hourly snorkel rental for those who want to explore.

To dive into a bit deeper water, check out some of the catamarans that offer snorkel tours from the island. We went with the VI Cat , which offers several snorkel and beach excursions.

Zip line above the trees

Two-story green and yellow building surrounded by trees and plants.

If you’re looking for a little adventure, head to Tree Limin’ Extreme ziplining, the first zipline park in the Virgin Islands. This experience isn’t for the faint of heart, as you zip up to 35 miles per hour above the trees.

Tree Limin’ has six ziplines and two sky walks that will get your adrenaline pumping. Even on overcast days, they provide incredible views of Magens Bay, Jost van Dyke, Tortola, and beyond. It’s a must do for kids or anyone looking for a bit of a break from the beach. We felt safe the whole time and loved seeing the island in a different way. Plus, the guides are super friendly and funny.

See the plants at Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden

Lizard stature surrounded by plants and trees

For over 20 years, the gardens at Phantasea Tropical Botanical Garden have been cultivated to showcase orchids, bromeliads, tropical trees, and other Caribbean plants. Now open to the public, the garden educates visitors about the tropical plants and conservation methods.

As you wander through the 2-acre garden, there are lots of places to sit and appreciate the natural beauty. Some of the spots even have views of neighboring Tortola and St. John as well as the cruise ship harbor. With plants blooming all year long, there is no bad time to visit this lush location.

Grab a drink in a parking lot

People sitting at a bar with a large metal shark on the wall.

If you’re wondering what to do in St. Thomas at night, head to Red Hook, which is full of lots of great restaurants and fun places for going out. One of the most unique is Duffy’s Love Shack .

Duffy’s, a fun tiki bar that serves food, is in the parking lot of a strip mall right in the heart of downtown. You can eat outside in the parking lot or inside where you’re likely to find bubbles coming down from the ceiling and an animated shark moving around at least some time during your visit. It’s an experience not to be missed. We liked it so much that we went several times.

Explore the bounty at the Pirates Treasure Museum

Red, white, and orange building with four fake canons and a sign for

In its centuries of maritime history, thousands of voyages have started and ended on the shores of St. Thomas and the Virgin Islands, but not all of them have made it safely. Exhibits at the Pirates Treasure Museum include items recovered from nearby shipwrecks and educate visitors about the technology used to find and recover wrecks. There are plenty of engaging stories from survivors of doomed ships and lots of pirate lore to keep you entertained. (The museum’s opening hours follow the cruise ship schedule .)

Visit Coral World Ocean Park

Building in the ocean with a white domed second floor and a bridge connecting to land.

Right next to Coki Beach, Coral World Ocean Park shows visitors the exciting world of the ocean up close. Its signature Underwater Observatory Tower goes 20 feet below the surface of the water, letting you feel like you’re SCUBA diving while seeing sea life in a unique way.

Coral reef tanks and a giant aquarium also allow visitors to Coral World to see sea turtles, sea lions, lots of fish, coral, and sharks. Those interested in getting a closer look can try a sea trek experience–walking on the ocean floor with an oxygen-filled helmet. Note: we never endorse activities that involve interacting with sea life in a way they wouldn’t behave in the wild such as swimming with animals.

Visit Fort Christian

Exterior of a red building with a clock tower.

One of the most historic attractions in St. Thomas, Fort Christian was first built in the 1670s. Named after Danish King Christian V, the fort was designed to provide defense for the island.

Over the centuries, the structure and purpose of the fort evolved, and it became police headquarters of the Virgin Islands and a prison. Today, the red and white Gothic revival structure is a National Historic Landmark featuring a museum filled with period furniture and historic documents and photos that tell the story of the island.

See the St. Thomas Synagogue

Gate topped with a lamp and a Star of David outside a synagogue .

The St. Thomas Synagogue —officially named Beracha Veshalom Vegimulth Hasidim, meaning Blessing and Peace and Loving Deeds—is the second-oldest synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. The congregation started with just nine Sephardic Jewish families and dates from 1796.

The current synagogue was built in 1833 in the same location as previous buildings. On the regular tours, visitors can see its unique historic features, including its domed ceiling with European chandeliers, mahogany pews, and the Menorah, which dates from the 11 th century. Uniquely, the building’s floor is covered in sand, symbolic of the desert where the Moses and the children of Israel wandered for 40 years.

Explore the underwater world on a SCUBA Dive

Brightly colored coral in the ocean.

Dozens of breathtaking dive sites line the waters off the coast. Whether you’re interested in getting SCUBA certified or are an advanced diver, there are lots of options from beginner’s classes to wreck dives.

We dove off Coki Beach and saw the most colorful coral we’ve seen anywhere in the world along with sharks, sea turtles, eels, and all kinds of fish. The scenery is gorgeous and the water is warm, so it’s hard to ask for anything more.

Have a pint at Leatherback Brewing

Interior of Leatherback Brewery tasting room with a bar, tables, and chairs.

To sample some beer from the islands , head to Leatherback Brewing Company . Brewed with Caribbean grown ingredients, the beers at Leatherback are made both in St. Croix and in St. Thomas at Havensight Plaza not far from the cruise port.

A celebration of life in the Caribbean, the signature beers are Beach Life, Island Life, and Reef Life. With these beers and a selection of other ales, IPAs, hefeweizens, and more, Leatherback has a broad offering. The taproom has lots of seating and is a great place to get out of the sun.

See Frederick Lutheran Church

Exterior of a brick church with a red door and windows.

Founded in 1666, the Frederick Lutheran Church is one of the oldest institutions on the island. The current building, which was dedicated in 1793, has survived disasters and been repaired and remodeled over the years. It remains one of the oldest continually used structures in St. Thomas and is worth a stop when you’re downtown.

Take the Skyride to Paradise Point

Cable cars going uphill from a two-story building.

Rising to 700 feet above sea level, the Skyride to Paradise Point provides sweeping views of the island. It’s a beautiful place to visit any time but is especially popular at sunset. At the top, visitors will find the famous Bailey’s Bushwacker cocktail as well as PRIME at Paradise Point , a steakhouse that is one of the top restaurants on the island. For shorter lines, plan to go earlier in the day.

Grab a coffee at Virgin Islands Coffee Roaster

White circular sign with a bird:

Virgin Islands Coffee Roasters is a small batch artisanal coffee roaster whose coffee ensures a delicious drink (and caffeine fix!) across the island. Their beans are roasted and packaged on St. Thomas for maximum freshness.

Virgin Islands Coffee Roasters has a cafe right near the cruise port where visitors can try their coffee alongside snacks like ice cream and Belgian waffles and other drinks like fruit teas and locally brewed coffee beers. If you can’t make it to the cafe, their beans are used at coffee shops and restaurants all over the island, so look out for their sign.

Visit Water Island

Island filled with palm trees beside the blue ocean.

A 7-minute ferry ride from the Crown Bay Marina will take you to the shores of Water Island, the smallest of the US Virgin Islands. Much smaller (and generally quieter) than St. Thomas, a visit here feels like a getaway from your vacation.

Rent a chair, grab a cocktail from Dinghy’s Beach Bar , and settle in for a relaxing day among the waves. Sea turtles feed on sea grass just a few yards from shore, so bring your snorkel to watch them in their natural habitat.

What to See and Do in St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.

st thomas virgin islands tourist attractions

The duty-free shopping capital of the Caribbean features block after block (and alley after alley) of jewelry stores selling precious gems, watches, and more at bargain prices. You’ll also find the usual souvenir shops, and there’s a market along the waterfront with vendors selling jewelry, clothing, and knockoff designer handbags.

The island’s busiest road (Veteran’s Drive) separates downtown from the harbor, so this isn’t where you want to go for waterfront dining and drinking. However, the city’s narrow streets -- most with their original Danish names -- are home to a number of small, specialty restaurants, often housed in historic former warehouses and other buildings.

Historic sites include Fort Christian , which may or may not be open for tours (it’s currently undergoing renovations); the 99 Steps, built by the Danes in the mid-1700s using bricks transported as ships' ballast, and Blackbeard’s Castle . You can also catch a ferry from here to Cruz Bay, St. John, or a seaplane to St. Croix.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Red Hook

Stellig2008 via Flikr

Located on the southeast coast of St. Thomas , Red Hook is known for its ferry to nearby St. John (20 minutes away, $6 each way for adults) and, increasingly, for its dining and nightlife scene. Steps from the ferry terminal are an array of restaurants and bars, some on the waterfront (Fish Tails, Big Bambooz, Molly Malone's ), others in strip malls (the XO Bistro martini bar, Fat Boys, and the walk-up Taco Hell stand). One of the best, Duffy's Love Shack, sits in the middle of a parking lot but has a popular dance party and free well drinks for the ladies on Wednesday nights.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Frenchtown

© Bella Blu

This historic port community just west of Charlotte Amalie is home to the island’s fresh-fish market and a marina where you can charter a yacht or join a kayaking excursion to nearby Hassell Island. There’s also a cluster of good-to-great restaurants here, including the Hook, Line, and Sinker (facing the marina, seafood-heavy menu, obviously), Bella Blu (oddly, Austrian cuisine -- try the schnitzel!), Pie Whole (outstanding thin-crust pizza, bruschetta, and specialty beers from around the world), Looney Bien , a Mexican place for reasonably priced tacos and burritos and two varieties of homemade sangria, and Craig and Sally's , where the humble facade gives way to a pretty dining room and fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Havensight

If you come off a cruise ship docked in Charlotte Amalie, Havensight is the first thing you’ll see -- a purpose-built waterfront mall with all the usual souvenir shops, jewelry stores, and touristy bars like Hooters and Señor Frogs . There are a few standouts, however: the Pirates Chest sells genuine coins and other artifacts from shipwrecks around the world, many brought to the surface by store owner Sean Loughman. Mojo’s is one of the better watering holes you’ll find in a shopping center parking lot, with swings to sit on, decent drink specials at the big round bar, and rock music on the sound system.

The Shipwreck Tavern claims to have the island’s best burger: some dispute that, but their huge charcoal-grilled burgers are very good -- and big enough to split. Next door is the Al Cohen liquor store, which has an excellent selection of duty-free spirits, wine, and beer, including the local Cruzan rum for less than $8 a liter (K-Mart, also in Havensight, is another option for low-cost alcohol and other shopping).

The base of the Paradise Point sky ride also is in Havensight: cable cars take you from sea level to the 800-foot summit of Paradise Point for spectacular views (weather permitting, of course) of Charlotte Amalie, its harbor, Hassell Island, Water Island, and -- on a good day -- as far off as Puerto Rico . A ride on the ferris wheel at the summit is included in the price of your ticket, and there’s also a bar/restaurant on top that’s famous for its Bailey’s Bushwacker, a frozen drink made with Irish cream liqueur.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Yacht Haven

© Fat Turtle

Yachts (and mega-yachts) dock here for port calls at Charlotte Amalie, disgorging their well-heeled passengers into Yacht Haven Grande , a warren of upscale shops selling designer goods from the likes of Bulgari, Coach, and Gucci. At nights, the blue dock lights lure visitors down to gawk at the yachts and imbibe at the Fat Turtle , where the drinks and dining are surprisingly affordable despite the tony address. The Friday night dance party here is one of the best on the island, and there’s also live music on many nights.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Water Island

Joyosity via Flikr

Tiny (about 500 acres) Water Island has just 120 year-round residents and is very low-key, but this “fourth Virgin Island” is just 10 minutes away from St. Thomas by ferry ($3 one-way), so it’s a popular day-tripper’s destination. You can rent a bike or walk around the island, lay on a beach, kayak or snorkel, or explore the ruins of old military facilities. Stop at Joe's Beach Bar for a drink. If you want to stay overnight, your best option is to rent a tent-cottage at the island's campground , near Honeymoon Beach. The Water Island ferry is in the Crown Bay Marina , a short walk from St. Thomas' Crown Bay cruise-ship dock.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Hassell Island

Historic Hassell Island is tantalizingly close to Charlotte Amalie but for many years has been more-or-less inaccessible to visitors. However, the U.S. National Park Service is in the process of restoring a former boat-repair building, several forts, and the remnants of a leper’s hospital on the island. Eventually there will be ferry service to Hassell Island, but for now, you can visit by way of a kayak excursion that leaves from Frenchtown and includes a guided tour and hike plus snorkeling on the quiet, windward side of the island.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Magen’s Bay Beach

U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism

One of the most famous beaches in the Caribbean, Magen’s Bay is a fabulous stretch of sand on a U-shaped bay on St. Thomas’s north side. Like all beaches on the island, Magen’s Bay is public, but you’ll have to pay a fee to reach the shoreline -- as one resident put it, you’re basically paying to walk through the parking lot. Most visitors agree that it’s worth the small charge, however, as long as you don’t come when a bunch of cruise ships are in port, when this popular strand can get unbearably crowded. Better then to opt for another spot to spread out your beach towels, such as quiet Hull Bay, also on the island’s north side.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Coral World Ocean Park

Coral World Ocean Park

Located between Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook on St. Thomas’ Route 38, Coral World Ocean Park is a stand-alone attraction focused on marine life. Basic admission includes access to the park’s Undersea Observatory and other exhibits; add-ons include Sea Trek , Snuba , shark, turtle, and sea-lion encounter programs, a boat tour aboard the M/V Nautilus, and parasailing. Packages are available from St. Thomas hotels and cruise ships and include transportation, or you can take a cab. Swimming and sunning at nearby Coki Beach is also an option.

Top St. Thomas Attractions: Buck Island Reef National Wildlife Refuge

Karl Callwood

Located two miles off the south coast of St. Thomas, the Buck Island Reef National Wildlife Refuge is home to the historic Buck Island Lighthouse, which presides over 45-acre Buck Island. There are hiking trails on the island, but the lighthouse is closed to the public, a large rat population keeps the seabirds away. The main attraction here isn't the island itself but the surrounding, wreck-strewn reefs, which are a popular destination for divers and snorkelers .

St. Thomas' Best Attractions above and below Water

Chelle Koster Walton

LAST UPDATED BY Chelle Koster Walton March 27, 2015

St. Thomas gives visitors so many options for spending leisure and recreational days both on land and on (or under) its clear, sparkling waters. This list puts Magens Bay at the top because it is one of the Caribbean’s best beaches, and because the beach is often the first destination of vacationers. So start at the beach to get into the “limin’” mode, as they say here in the U.S. Virgin Islands. From there, use this list as your priority guide for picking the best from all of St. Thomas’ varied and alluring attractions and activities.

Get on and under the water both with a combo kayak and snorkeling tour with Virgin Islands Ecotour . Some of its excursions also include exploring trails and historic sites. The rest of the attractions and activities included here revolve around the manmade, but yet they almost always bring you in contact with the islands’ rich world of flora and fauna or their intriguing history peopled with pirates, sea captains, traders and soldiers. St. Thomas’ past pops up everywhere in downtown Charlotte Amalie, where each building seems to tell a story. Check with the St. Thomas Historical Trust for walking and ferry tours of downtown’s historic sites.

Paradise Point St. Thomas Skyride

Paradise Point St. Thomas Skyride

For visitors without automobile transportation, the best way to score one of St. Thomas' legendary views is this gondola, located across the street from the Havensight cruise ship dock and shopping center. It whisks visitors high above Charlotte Amalie harbor to an entertainment center at the top of the 700-foot peak. From here you can see all the way to St. Croix, Vieques, and Culebra on a clear day. At the bar, sample a famous Bailey's Bushwhacker (be prepared to open your wallet wide), hike the quarter-mile nature trail, catch an entertaining bird show, or shop for souvenirs. Paradise Point features live music in the evenings and Carnival-type games and activities throughout the year.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : Paradise Point gives you the best of St. Thomas: great views, drinks and music.

Chelle's expert tip : The cable car only operates when cruise ships are in port, but you can drive up to Paradise Point to drink in cocktails and the view.

Mahogany Run Golf Course

Mahogany Run Golf Course

The only golf course on St. Thomas, the very hilly Mahogany Run course is declared "spectacular" by golfers. Designed by George and Tom Fazio, the par-70 course boasts its famous "Devil's Triangle" — holes 13, 14 and 15, which stretch along dramatic cliffs and whose fairways cross the Caribbean Sea. Set into a coastal valley, the greens have hosted celebs and dignitaries as diverse as Tiger Woods and Bill Clinton. Club rentals are available at the pro shop. Green fees vary by season and include a golf cart; twilight and off-season rates are available. Cruise ship passengers may opt for a ship-golf package.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : St. Thomas' only golf course is gorgeous and challenging with mountain and sea views.

Chelle's expert tip : The club has its own restaurant, but if you are looking for a special dinner in the vicinity, reserve a table at the Old Stone Farmhouse.

Magic Ice Gallery

Magic Ice Gallery

A spinoff of an Oslo, Norway, ice sculpture gallery, Magic Ice localizes its inventory with Virgin Island themes such as Blackbeard, local marine creatures and other works carved by specially trained Lithuanian artists and illuminated with changing colored lights. The sculptures, which include an ice chapel, change up a few times each year. It's a great place to truly "chill" on a hot downtown day. Kids love the ice slide. Admission includes a chilled shot of your choice of local Cruzan rum, from the 40 foot bar made of ice, and use of a deluxe parka and leggings and gloves.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : This is a perfect escape from the heat and throngs along downtown Charlotte Amalie's waterfront.

Chelle's expert tip : The temperature remains at 35 degrees, so make sure your toes are covered.

Tree Limin' Extreme Zipline St. Thomas

Tree Limin' Extreme Zipline St. Thomas

One of St. Thomas' newest attractions, Tree Limin' Extreme consists of a series of eight cables and two rope bridges that crisscross down verdant St. Peter Mountain, one of the island's highest peaks.Visitors cop stunning views across the Caribbean Sea, with Magens Bay in the foreground and the islands of St. John, Tortola and Jost Van Dyke in the distance. The eighth and final zip line is the only "yo-yo" zip in the Caribbean: instead of a typical point-to-point ride, this type of zip line allows the rider to travel to the far end of the line, pause briefly, then yo-yo back. The entire zip line tour takes about two-and-half to three hours.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : This is the only canopy zip line facility in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Chelle's expert tip : Children must be at least 5 years old to tandem zip and 8 years old (and at least 70 pounds) to solo zip.

Blackbeard's Castle / Skytsborg Tower

Blackbeard's Castle / Skytsborg Tower

Although the pirate Blackbeard most likely never set foot on St. Thomas, he is something of a patron anti-saint. The center of this attraction, Skytsborg Tower, was used as a military lookout in colonial times, but has come to be called Blackbeard's Castle in the middle of an eponymous inn. You can visit it along with a knot of historical structures on Blackbeard Hill by a self-guided tour the inn offers and tickets. The tour begins with a dramatic and entertaining pirate re-enactor at the watchtower, which you can climb. Docents are stationed strategically along a trail that leads to circa-1860 Villa Notman, which showcases antique mahogany furniture from Trinidad and Barbados. Built in 1822, Haagensen House features restored outbuildings, gardens, 19th-century exhibit rooms and a Pirate's Gallery of sculptures depicting the Caribbean's most infamous. The trail ends at Hotel 1829, another 19th century home with a 20-foot amber waterfall.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : This one tour takes in many of the island's historic treasures with a bit of spice.

Chelle's expert tip : The pathway along this historic self-tour trail is uneven, steep and stepped.

St. Peter Great House and Botanical Gardens

St. Peter Great House and Botanical Gardens

A restored colonial plantation great house originally built in the early 1800s lies at the heart of these 11 lushly landscaped mountain top acres above Magens Bay. The 2,000 square foot structure, open ofr touring, exemplifies West Indian colonial architecture with exquisite detail. Allow about 45 minutes to tour the grounds, which include the botanical gardens' nature trail, waterfalls, fish ponds, a tropical bird aviary and more than 20 species of orchids and 150 varieties of Caribbean plants and fruiting trees. An observation tower expands your view to encompass at least 15 other U.S. and British Virgin Islands.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : St. Peter Great House combines the island's history with its nature for the best of what St. Thomas offers.

Chelle's expert tip : Do NOT forget the camera. Besides the lovely vegetation, St. Peter Great House affords some the island's best views.

Virgin Islands Ecotours

Virgin Islands Ecotours

St. Thomas' foremost touring company takes you to see mangrove estuaries, nurse sharks, tropical fish, barracudas, snowy egrets and other natural wonders during three- or five-hour kayak tours. Most tours ply the waters of St Thomas Mangrove Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary & Marine Reserve, but the company also offers tours in Caneel Bay on St. John and to historic Hassel Island just offshore downtown Charlotte Amalie. Experienced naturalists lead groups of two to 50 participants, providing informed commentary on the indigenous flora and fauna of the area. The trips includes about an hour's worth of easy kayaking, a half-hour walk and a half-hour stop for snorkeling and underwater exploration.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : It regularly wins kudos as the U.S. Virgin Island's best eco-tourism attraction.

Chelle's expert tip : The ecotours are suitable for paddlers and snorkelers of all ages and skill levels.

Its central circular tower like aquarium provides windows onto the coral reef at several levels with more than 20 viewing stations. One of the most popular activities are its sea lion interactions, complete with wetsuits and wet kisses. There are also sea turtle and shark encounter programs. Other add-on activities include snuba, a Sea Trek Helmet Dive, and the Nautilus Semi Submarine. At the touch pool, you can handle starfish, stingrays, and even a baby shark.

St. John Ferry

St. John Ferry

The quick ferry ride to the island of St. John whisks you away from St. Thomas' bustle to a quieter, more natural island. The Virgin Islands National Park occupies about two-thirds of the island, insuring it remains as lightly developed as it is. The ferry ride from Red Hook is air-conditioned and comfortable with TV cartoons airing to keep the kids occupied. It lands some 20 minutes later at the docks at Cruz Bay, the island's main town. From there you can walk to a number of fun shops and good restaurants and bars as well as the national park visitors center. Or hop aboard one of the safari surreys that await in the town plaza for transport to St. John's gorgeous beaches. The most lauded, Trunk Bay has an underwater snorkeling trail. Along the island's climbing road you'll see breathtaking views, donkeys, sugar mill ruins and mongooses.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : No trip to St. Thomas is complete without a visit to its little brother island.

Chelle's expert tip : Ferries also depart from downtown Charlotte Amalie, but less frequently.

Magens Bay

The most highly awarded and flaunted beach in St. Thomas, it attracts locals and tourists alike to its coved, sandy shores within the verdant embrace of St. Thomas' famously scenic hillsides below the Drake's Seat overlook. It is also one of the island's most developed beaches. Complete amenities make it an all-around perfect spot for watersports, picnicking, sunbathing or just people-watching. Concessions feed appetites for beach food, beer, kayaking, beach lounging and other sandy pursuits. Sea grape trees and plenty of picnic tables line the fine white sand. On weekends, the locals come to party, so head early to the fringe areas if you are looking for peace.

Recommended for St. Thomas' Best Attractions because : Magens Bay's beach offers an outstanding all-around beach experience, with lifeguards, a snack bar, restrooms, picnic areas and watersports.

Chelle's expert tip : The beach bar features wait staff who will come to take your order from you on the beach.
