The dance between airline carriers and their passengers’ luggage has long been a delicate one. There’s nothing like waltzing up to the check-in counter with a bag that you’ve painstakingly packed to be sub-weight-limit only to find out that it’s not — and getting it to your destination will be an extra $75, please and thank you. Or to arrive at the boarding of a budget airline with your “carry-on” to be confronted with that stingy little box with clearly marked measurements that are sure to fall short of what you planned to bring on the plane.

Frequent fliers have therefore become well accustomed to stuffing as much as possible into as few square inches or liters as physics will allow — and when a bag comes along that appears to offer that Mary Poppins-like ability to stash a shocking amount of stuff, it’s worth noting.

Target’s Open Story brand is known for its stylish and genuinely functional travel accessories — we’ve previously written up fan favorites like this suspiciously Away-like hardshell suitcase and the brand’s no-brainer, just-buy-it luggage scale that will save anyone from the aforementioned overweight baggage fees. This generously-sized backpack appears to be the next installment in this march of well-designed essentials, and it has a stunning number of long-winded five-star reviews testifying to its supreme functionality. Overall, it’s earned a 4.7-star reviews across 90 reviews (with 73 of them clocking in at five stars).

The 35-liter capacity bag has a clamshell closure, which opens completely flat, and one exterior zip pocket that opens to reveal a series of slip pockets for small essentials like passports, reading material and the like. The interior reveals two zipper-protected sides that are equipped with every conceivable shape of compartment for keeping clothing, toiletries and more organized with scientific precision, and the rear laptop sleeve holds a machine measuring up to 17 inches. One reviewer below described using packing cubes, but given the bag’s internal structure, we’re not even really sure that’s necessary. The whole shebang can be compressed shut with the help of adjustable exterior closures, and in addition to the padded backpack straps, there’s a side carrying handles and a luggage slip for use with handled rolling luggage.

The interior of the Open Story backpack is ludicrously capacious. (Sorry.)

Not every review is stellar, and some of the poorer reviews offer perspective on the bag’s size, which, at 19.25 inches tall, 13 inches wide and 8 inches deep, is perhaps a hair larger than, say, a traditional banker’s box . For some reviewers, the heft was too much — but this population pales in comparison to the number of customers who happily embraced the bag’s girth and stuffed it full of everything they’d need for trips up to three weeks long (in the instance of the reviewer below who brought it on a solo trip to Italy).

Enough from me, though — take a look at what some of the most informative reviews had to say (it was hard to narrow down) or just scroll all the way to get this magical bag in time for your next trip.

“ Took this as my sole bag for two weeks in Europe and it held out amazing. Fits neatly under the seat in front of me in my flight and holds a ridiculous amount of stuff. Very sturdy zippers and seams. A little uncomfortably on the shoulders when loaded heavy but manageable.” — Lg “ I used this item as a personal item on a Spirit flight. I was a little nervous it would be too big, but I didn’t have any problems! I tried not to overstuff, but of course still did. The straps to condense it smaller definitely helped. I have used it a few times since for weekend trips. All of the different pockets and compartments make it perfect for any small trip.” — Jayme “This worked great for my long flight! I was able to bring some clothes and all my things that I needed for my long flight. The computer pocket and small pocket were great for easy and quick access. I wanted the make of a suitcase in a backpack form and this is it. ” — RebF “ Single Greatest Luggage Purchase. Size is perfect for avoiding carry-on fees for air travel . So many well designed, convenient and supported compartments. Wears like a backpack, stores like a suitcase! Chef’s kiss!” — LFTravels “ I used this for a trip to Europe and it was great! I used compression packing cubes and it held a ton! I love that it still has a protected spot for my laptop and easy-access pockets. It held up really well!” — skb324 “ If you fly Spirit or Frontier then this is definitely a must-buy . I used it for the first time on a Frontier flight last week and just as I expected, I was stopped during the boarding process (along with like 5 other people) because I didn’t pay the extra fee to bring a carry-on bag. Luckily, I was able to squish it down, tighten the straps on the side, and unclip the shoulder straps to make it fit in the little metal bin. At that moment I said to myself “I have to give this thing a 5-star review,” so here I am. Now I’m buying one for my dad and my brother.” — Mia “ I needed a backpack for a 3-week solo trip to Italy and this was amazing. It was so sturdy and held up with all of the travel. It carried so much and the different compartments are super convenient. I love how it opens fully. It was very comfotable to wear and walk around with. I’ve used this bag several times since my trip and it has not disappointed. The ONLY negative thing I can think of is the zipper handles didn’t have a hole thick enough to use miniature locks (for safety while traveling). So we had to use a little creativity to make sure I could “lock” the zippers. That’s literally my only complaint though. I recommend this bag all the time.” — kbskate “Purchased for my bf last minute as he was flying to Vegas for a bachelor party. He didn’t purchase a carry on nor a checked bag and just planned on using a backpack. After packing all of his things I realized it would not fit so I quickly purchased this for pickup! It was awesome! The bag fit everything he needed for 4 days worth of things. He’s also a BIG guy so his things take up a lot of room. All and all it was prefect and spirit airlines had no issues ” — Kat

Britain’s Violent Riots: What We Know

Officials had braced for more unrest on Wednesday, but the night’s anti-immigration protests were smaller, with counterprotesters dominating the streets instead.

  • Share full article

A handful of protesters, two in masks, face a group of riot police officers with shields. In the background are a crowd, a fire and smoke in the air.

By Lynsey Chutel

After days of violent rioting set off by disinformation around a deadly stabbing rampage, the authorities in Britain had been bracing for more unrest on Wednesday. But by nightfall, large-scale anti-immigration demonstrations had not materialized, and only a few arrests had been made nationwide.

Instead, streets in cities across the country were filled with thousands of antiracism protesters, including in Liverpool, where by late evening, the counterdemonstration had taken on an almost celebratory tone.

Over the weekend, the anti-immigration protests, organized by far-right groups, had devolved into violence in more than a dozen towns and cities. And with messages on social media calling for wider protests and counterprotests on Wednesday, the British authorities were on high alert.

With tensions running high, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s cabinet held emergency meetings to discuss what has become the first crisis of his recently elected government. Some 6,000 specialist public-order police officers were mobilized nationwide to respond to any disorder, and the authorities in several cities and towns stepped up patrols.

Wednesday was not trouble-free, however.

In Bristol, the police said there was one arrest after a brick was thrown at a police vehicle and a bottle was thrown. In the southern city of Portsmouth, police officers dispersed a small group of anti-immigration protesters who had blocked a roadway. And in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where there have been at least four nights of unrest, disorder continued, and the police service said it would bring in additional officers.

But overall, many expressed relief that the fears of wide-scale violence had not been realized.

Here’s what we know about the turmoil in Britain.

Where has the unrest taken place?

Protesters over the weekend took to the streets of a dozen cities across Britain, most of them in England. Trouble broke out from Aldershot in the south to Sunderland in the north and Liverpool in the west. Belfast, in Northern Ireland, was also drawn into the fray.

In some cases, the protesters were merely unruly, but in others the violence was more pronounced.

Where arrests have been reported

On Sunday, rioters set upon a hotel that was housing asylum seekers in the town of Rotherham, in northern England, breaking windows before surging inside as the police struggled to control them. No guests were injured in the melee, the police said.

In Middlesbrough, a group of rioters, some masked, hurled bottles and rocks at officers. Cars were set on fire, and at least nine people were arrested. On Saturday, a library and a food bank were set ablaze in Liverpool as groups damaged and looted businesses, and in Hull, fires were set and storefronts smashed in the city center.

Dozens of police officers were injured, including some who required trips to the hospital.

What set off the protests?

The unrest began after a teenager wielding a knife attacked a children’s dance class early last week in the seaside town of Southport, which is near Liverpool. Three children were killed, and eight were wounded.

The suspect was born and raised in Britain, but online rumors soon circulated that he was an undocumented immigrant. To counter those false claims, the authorities took the unusual step of publicly identifying him. The BBC has reported that the suspect’s parents are from Rwanda. The police have not disclosed a motive for the stabbing attack.

But with migration a flashpoint issue in Britain, especially on the far right, the rumors were all it took to set off violence.

Extremist groups urged their followers to take to the streets, and on the day after the stabbings, they began to do so, starting in Southport.

How have the authorities responded?

The weekend riots prompted a heavy police response. Nearly 4,000 additional officers were deployed, a law enforcement association said. And a government order gave officers in some places special powers to disperse any gatherings or “antisocial behavior,” the police said in a statement .

More than 400 people have been arrested, and about 100 have been charged, Mr. Starmer said after an emergency cabinet meeting on Tuesday — the second in two days.

The prime minister, who has characterized the riots as “far-right thuggery,” encouraged prosecutors to name and shame those convicted to dissuade others from joining the violent rampages.

“I’m now expecting substantive sentencing before the end of the week,” Mr. Starmer said. “That should send a very powerful message to anybody involved, either directly or online, that you are likely to be dealt with within a week and that nobody, but nobody, should involve themselves in this disorder.”

BJ Harrington, the head of public order for Britain’s National Police Chiefs’ Council, said that online disinformation had been “a huge driver of this appalling violence.”

Intelligence teams, detectives and neighborhood officers, Mr. Harrington said, were working to identify the people fomenting the violence.

“They won’t win,” he said.

How are the authorities handling online incitement?

Social media has acted as an accelerant throughout the protests, with disinformation fueling far-right and anti-immigrant groups . Britain and other democracies have found that policing the internet is legally murky terrain, with individual rights and free speech protections balanced against a desire to block harmful material .

In his remarks on Tuesday, Mr. Starmer said that some arrests involved people accused of inciting violence online.

The first person to be convicted over online posts since the riots, according to the Crown Prosecution Service , was a 28-year-old man from Leeds who posted messages on Facebook about attacking a hotel that housed asylum seekers. It said that the man, Jordan Parlour, had pleaded guilty and been convicted of using threatening words or behavior to stir up racial hatred.

Mr. Starmer has called out social media companies over misinformation on their platforms, but holding them accountable could be tricky. Britain adopted a law last year that requires social media companies to introduce protections for child safety and to prevent and quickly remove illegal content like terrorism propaganda and revenge pornography. The law is less clear about how companies must treat misinformation and incendiary language.

What are the political implications?

The riots are the first political crisis for Mr. Starmer, who took office a month ago after his Labour Party defeated the Conservatives, who had been in government for 14 years.

While in power, the Conservatives tried to capitalize on public unhappiness over immigration, vowing to reduce it (though failing to do so). But in recent days they joined Labour in condemning the violent protests.

Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, now the opposition leader, said the unrest had “nothing to do with the tragedy in Southport.” The police, he said, have “our full support to deal with these criminals swiftly.”

Megan Specia contributed reporting.

The 12 best belt bags, from fashionable finds to the ultimate travel packs

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

The '90s fanny pack is making a major comeback, but if you're hoping for the same neon, one-compartment sling you used to hide under your windbreaker, you're going to be a bit disappointed. With its resurgence, the fanny pack has undergone a modern makeover for a life on-the-go. Now known as the stylish and versatile belt bag, your favorite hip accessory from yester-year has transformed into a hands-free fashion moment that combines both form and function into one easy, sleek method of storing your essentials.

Top belt bag picks

travel cases target

If you’re looking for a simple and affordable belt bag that provides durability and can fit an iPhone 14 Pro Max, this Ododos option from Amazon fits the bill. Best of all, it's $14 and just as durable as bags many times that price.

travel cases target

If you want the convenience of a belt bag with the style of a luxury purse, this is a great solution. KAAI's elegant bag is made from 100% Italian leather with a sophisticated suede interior. The only issue is that it's slightly narrow, but it's still big enough for a wallet, lipstick, keys, and some other essentials.

This Dagne Dover fanny pack is designed with functionality in mind. Highlights include an adjustable strap, a front zipper pocket, plenty of room for cash and credit cards, and a durable lining made with recycled polyester. Best of all? It’s machine-washable and available in six beautiful hues.

Best overall: Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag

One belt bag easily stands above the rest when it comes to versatility, color and size options, affordability, and popularity, and that is the Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag . For under $40, you'll snag an excellent, water-repellent sling perfected for everyday use.

The nylon-and-recycled polyester fabrics of the bag make it pliable and comfortable, while the adjustable strap offers a snug fit that stays put on the move. A hidden, exterior pocket means you can keep items like your phone close to your chest, while the main compartment features a mesh pocket to better keep you organized.

With fourteen different colors to choose from including bold and bright options alongside neutrals, there's something for everyone. It's even available in large and mini sizes if you're not content with the 1 liter capacity of the original.

Best budget: Quince Nylon Belt Bag

A reliable brand in both quality and affordability, Quince lands as the number one pick for most affordable belt bag. But beyond its reasonable price tag, the Revive Nylon Belt Bag is made from 100% recycled nylon, with four recycled bottles total going into the production of each bag.

It is extremely similar to the lululemon bag — especially in terms of capacity and material. A back slip pocket allows you to store easy-to-reach essentials like your phone, while an interior slip pocket suits all valuables you want to keep inaccessible. It's also lightweight enough to be used daily, helping you run errands more efficiently with just the essentials on you

For more of our favorite picks from the brand, see our full Quince review .

Best on Amazon: Ododos Mini Belt Bag

If you're looking for a no-frills belt bag that comes in a variety of colors and gets the job done, this ODOS belt bag is a solid option.

An Amazon best seller , this simple-yet-sleek design can be worn as a shoulder bag, crossbody bag, waist bag, or hand bag. It's lightweight, but roomy enough to hold essentials like your phone, wallet, keys, passport, and credit cards with room to spare in hidden side compartments and a back zippered compartment. Its mostly nylon material makes it very durable, and the variety of colorways available makes it a great unisex option. The best part? Because it's so affordable, you can get it in multiple colors to match multiple outfits.

Best leather: KAAI Ikon Bag

For a belt bag that's both sophisticated and can easily be transitioned from day-to-night looks, try the KAAI Ikon Belt Bag. Made from 100% Italian cow leather with a sleek matte finish and supple suede interior, this is an elevated hands-free option that combines convenience with style.

The outer magnetic closure makes for easier access to your valuables, while an interior zippered compartment makes the perfect home for cash or credit cards. Unique to the KAAI Ikon Belt Bag is also a small elastic loop to hold pencils or pens, so you're never without something to write with. Choose from eight diverse colors, from cool neutrals to bold, embossed designs.

The only issue is that it's a touch narrow. But if you only carry keys, a phone, a small wallet, and a lipstick or two, then it's perfect.

KAAI's elegant Pyramid Bag also made our list of the best work bags for women .

Best for travel: Dagne Dover Cairo Sling Bag

If you're looking for an easier, lighter carry-on than a duffle, or simply want to win TSA's most prepared traveler award, the Dagne Dover Cairo Sling Bag was made for you. While a bit bigger and potentially heavier than some of the other belt bags on our list, the Cairo Sling Bag makes up for its bulk with a variety of smartly crafted compartments to keep you hyper-organized. Fit everything you need and then some in its plentiful pockets that keep your necessities easily accessible, even in a rush.

The Cairo is also made from 100% vegan, recycled materials that prove especially durable for travel, along with an adjustable strap that can transform this bag from a belt bag to a sling. When you're done using it, you can easily pack it away in your luggage once you reach your destination.

Best Neoprene: Dagne Dover Ace Fanny Pack

Looking for the ultimate throwback fanny pack with a modern twist? Dagne Dover has just the thing. The brand's beloved Ace Fanny Pack comes in its signature 100% vegan neoprene that's both stretchy and soft-to-the-touch. The design is clever and streamlined, with the classic fanny pack zipped pocket at the front and a wider opening featuring a card compartment, a key clip, and a lipstick compartment.

For cards you need ASAP, there's even a hidden card compartment on the back. Perfect for everyday wear, this belt bag is incredibly light, and looks effortlessly stylish when worn crossbody.

Best for hiking: Patagonia Black Hole Waist Pack

For days spent outdoors, look no further than the utility of the Patagonia Black Hole Waist Pack. With its five-liter capacity, it offers ample storage for snacks, base layers, and so much more while you're on the move. This belt bag is also made from cool and comfortable mesh with a breathable back panel that offers some added comfort without any extra heat. Stretch water bottle pockets on both sides of the bag mean you'll be able to keep yourself hydrated, while the 100% recycled polyester with a PU coating makes it durable and weather-resistant to any conditions you might face.

Best unisex: Herschel Pop Quiz Hip Pack

When it comes to durable, functional and stylish bags for travel and everyday life, Herschel always provides solid options. The Pop Quiz Hip Pack is no different, with a matte weather-resistant coating that keeps belongings dry during rainy commutes or less predictable hiking weather.

Its variety of unisex color options and sleek design make it a great option for both men and women, and the adjustable strap suits a variety of sizes. Though there's only one main compartment, an internal mesh organizer helps you to keep track of your stuff while a key ring makes sure you never lose your keys again.

Best oversized: Calpak Luka Belt Bag

On the days when you need to carry a bit more with you but still want the hands-free capabilities of a belt bag, opt for the Calpak Luka Belt Bag . Out of all the bags on our list, the Luka Belt Bag has the biggest and deepest dimensions, meaning you can squeeze in a lot more without feeling any additional weight or bulk thanks to the lightweight, flexible material. The slightly quilted design offers a bit more effortless detail than some of the other options on this list, plus it's available in 18 colors, so there's a Luka bag for just about every 'fit.

Best mini: Athleta All About Crossbody Belt Bag

Then there are the days when all you require is your phone, keys, and a small tube of ChapStick, and for those occasions, there's the Athleta All About Crossbody Belt Bag . Though it's a bit smaller and more narrow, Athleta's belt bag is truly mighty with a zippered front pocket for smaller items and a mesh inner pocket for valuables like your phone.

The waterproof, recycled polyester makes for a softer, more pliable fabric that allows you to stretch in what you need. The strap is also adjustable and detachable, so this bag can double as a mini packing cube for when you're on-the-go. It even has a removable belt so you can wear it as a sling or on your waist.

Best machine-washable: Rothy's The Belt Bag

Sustainability meets versatility in this unique, completely machine washable belt bag by Rothy's. Like the brand's flats, Rothy's Belt Bag is knit with a combination of threads made from marine plastics collected 30 miles from waterways and plastic bottles. The secure magnetic closure allows for easy access to your valuables, while two additional pockets and an interior card slot keep you organized. The best feature, though, is the adjustable and detachable belt, which allows you to wear this bag four ways – across the body, over the shoulder, as a belt, or as a clutch.

For more of our favorite products from the brand, see our full Rothy's review .

Best splurge: Senreve Aria Belt Bag

If you're looking for a belt bag that can truly double as a fashion-forward purse, we highly recommend the Senreve Aria Belt Bag . It's masterfully designed with belt loops on both the exterior and interior of the bag so it can be worn as a belt bag, sling, crossbody bag, or clutch. The shape is also one of the more intriguing on our list, with a magnetic belt-like fastener that proves to be both stylish and secure.

The Aria Belt Bag isn't short on storage options – the large main compartment can fit your phone, a small wallet, and your AirPods, while a hidden pocket on the front exterior underneath the closing flap fits cards easily. There's also a hidden pocket in the interior for other valuables. While available in a wide variety of vegan and Italian leathers, featuring unique colors and embossed styles, the Aria Belt Bag isn't the most pliable on our list. If you overstuff the bag, you'll have difficulties closing it, making it a better option for a light travel day.

The first increase in inflation this year is less a reason for panic than a signal that, after almost three years of wild volatility, the UK's measure of price increases is returning to a period of what looks far more normal fluctuation.

The primary reason CPI stepped up to 2.2% in the year to July is statistical, the base effect of energy prices falling less this year than they did in July 2023. A year ago the Ofgem retail price cap fell by more than £1,100, 10 times more than the £110 reduction last month. That means that while energy prices are lower than they were, annual inflation increased.

The Bank of England had forecast this move upwards from its target rate of 2% and used it to justify its cautious tone around interest rates, even as they were cut earlier this month for the first time since the hiking cycle began.

Below the headline rate of CPI were numbers that will give the Bank some confidence that it can afford to cut rates further by the end of the year.

Core inflation, a measure that removes volatile food and energy prices and indicates the underlying "secondary" effects of inflation, fell slightly from 3.5% to 3.2%.

Goods inflation remains in negative territory at minus 0.6%, but that was an increase from minus 1.4% the previous month, driven in part by food inflation, which increased to 1.8% after 15 consecutive monthly falls.

Inflation in services, which make up the majority of the British economy, fell to 5.2%. Coming a day after wage inflation also eased, that fuelled expectations that further rate cuts are coming, though not necessarily at the next Bank of England meeting in September.

Market expectations of a cut in September rose to 45%, meaning a narrow majority expect rates to be held at 5%, with the prospects of further cuts before the year-end priced at 90% in November and 97% in December.

Every Wednesday we ask top chefs to pick their favourite Cheap Eats where they live and when they cook at home. This week we speak to TV chef Judy Joo, who co-owns the popular Seoul Bird in London.

Hi Judy, can you tell us your favourite places in London where you can get a meal for two for less than £40?

Since 1900,  Paul Rothe & Son  in Marylebone has been crafting some of the best sandwiches in London. Lucky for me, I live just around the corner from this charming, historic deli.

My go-to is their famous pastrami and cheese, piled high with pickle, mayo, and mustard. Occasionally, I'll switch things up with their epic coronation chicken, or if I'm feeling adventurous, a jacket potato with tuna and sweetcorn. It's quintessentially British, and I love it.

Trejo's Tacos has crossed the pond, opening its first international outpost in Notting Hill. Founded by actor Danny Trejo, this canteen boasts a cult following in Los Angeles (myself included) and has quickly become my favourite spot for tacos in London.

My usual order includes a plate of Baja fish and spicy shrimp tacos, dosed in their house hot sauce and perfectly complemented by one of their stellar OG margaritas or homemade horchata. I also love their house-made guacamole and salsa served with their truly addictive freshly fried corn tortilla chips. I just munch away while thinking of the southern California sun.

I live near Edgware Road, an area renowned for its vibrant Middle Eastern community and fantastic cuisine. Maroush , a London institution with multiple venues across the city, remains a favourite, especially the original one on Edgware Road.

The chicken or lamb shawarma is the star dish, slow-cooked on vertical rotisseries, infused with aromatic spices, and expertly sliced off with sabers. It's the perfect late-night snack after a few too many pints. I love their tomato okra stew with rice - so comforting and warming.

Tucked away in the basement of an unassuming British pub down a quaint mews street in Marylebone is Liu Xiaomian .

I usually order the minced pork xiaomian - toothsome wheat noodles swimming in a red chilli broth, then dressed with seasoned pork and fragrant spring onions. The numbing pork wontons are another standout, delivering what their name promises in true mala style. Don't miss the cucumber side salad which offers a refreshing respite for your palate.

What is your go-to cheap eat to cook at home when you have a night in?

My go-to budget-friendly meal for cooking at home is pimped-out instant ramen noodles.

If I am feeling spicy, I'll grab a pack of Shin Ramen and add fresh veggies and leftover proteins from the fridge.

Spinach, mushrooms, corn, spring onions, leftover roasted chicken, and some frozen dumplings usually make their way into the pot. Absolutely anything goes!

And, to finish, I'll crack an egg in and let it cook on top of the noodles just until the yolk is set, but still gooey. It's a quick, delicious meal that hits the spot every time.

As we've discussed throughout the morning, the rate of inflation grew to 2.2% in July - the first time since December last year that it has increased.

Which shop prices are increasing fastest?

Olive oil costs nearly two fifths more than it did last year, with prices for 500ml-1 litre rising from £6.39 to £8.83 in just 12 months.

The Money blog looked at the reasons why here...

Plums, meanwhile, are up by a quarter, from £3.08 per kilo to £3.57.

Food and drink products are responsible for seven of the 10 highest increases since last year.

For fans of a slicked-back hairstyle, non-food items like hair gel increased by a third, and for any pet owners, the price of a small mammal cage nearly hopped up by a fifth.

Top five price rises:

  • Olive oil (500ml-1litre): up 38%, £6.39 to £8.83
  • Hair gel (150-200ml): up 33%, £3.08 to £4.10
  • Plums (per kg): up 25%, £2.85 to £3.57
  • White potatoes (per kg): up 20%, 74p to 89p
  • Cauliflower (each): up 20%, £1.07 to £1.28

Fifty-six of the 156 types of food and drink tracked by the ONS have actually become cheaper since last year. Many of these were store cupboard staples like pulses, dried pasta, and canned tomatoes.

Top food price decreases:

  • Pulses (390-420g): down 13%, 77p to 67p
  • Frozen prawns (per kg): down 8%, £18.77 to £17.24
  • Cheddar cheese (per kg): down 8%, £9.49 to £8.77
  • Spreadable butter (500g): down 7%, £4.18 to £3.90
  • Frozen berries (per pack): down 6%, £2.53 to £2.37

Of non-supermarket items, electric heaters have been some of the biggest price fallers - by 22%.

We've had some more ONS data this morning - this time on house and rent inflation.

While the figures are largely unchanged from a month ago, the rental stats in particular are worth outlining as they illustrate the difficulties still facing renters.

Official data shows:

  • Average UK private rents increased by 8.6% in the 12 months to July 2024, unchanged from in the 12 months to June 2024;
  • Average rents increased to £1,319 (8.6%) in England, £748 (7.9%) in Wales, and £965 (8.2%) in Scotland;
  • In Northern Ireland, average rents increased by 10% in the 12 months to May 2024;
  • In England, rents inflation was highest in London (9.7%) and lowest in the North East (6.1%).

On the housing market, we learned:

  • Average UK house prices increased by 2.7%, to £288,000, in the 12 months to June 2024 - unchanged from a month before;
  • Average house prices increased in England to £305,000 (2.4%), in Wales to £216,000 (1.8%), and in Scotland to £192,000 (4.3%).

By Sarah Taaffe-Maguire , business reporter

News of an increased rate of price rises was welcomed by UK markets but it hit the pound.

While inflation has increased, the fact the figure came in lower than expected could be a boost to the mainly UK-based companies that make up the FTSE 250, which rose 0.47% on the news, as did the 100 most valuable companies on the exchange, the FTSE 100.

The pound, however, fell from its highest since late July and now £1 buys $1.2838 and €1.1659.

Energy costs remain elevated with the benchmark oil price $81 for a barrel of Brent crude oil.

Gas prices are still below the 100p a therm (the measurement for heat) high seen on Monday evening but not by a whole lot at 96.65p a therm.

The biggest riser of FTSE 250 companies was gambling tech company Playtech.

Following Sky News reporting that gambling giant Flutter is in talks to buy the consumer arm of Playtech for £2bn, its share price shot up 13.57%.

Wizz Air has launched Europe's first unlimited flight package - but there are a few things you should know before signing up.

The All You Can Fly membership costs £534 for 12 months, and is currently on sale until tomorrow for £445.

Subscribers can use the deal to travel to more than 800 destinations as many times as they like over the course of a year, starting from 25 September.

Here's the catch - customers must book the flights within 72-hours of them taking off.

Each flight also comes with a £9 booking fee, which must be paid in addition to the membership.

And, the costs of booking a seat and adding luggage is also not included.

On the Wizz Air website, a "seat protection fee" ranges from ‎€80 (£68.31)  to ‎€100 (£85.39), and adding a bag costs between €11 (£9.39) and ‎€120.50 (£102.89).

It's also important to note that there are only 10,000 memberships available.

Wizz Air's commercial officer Silvia Mosquera said: "We are thrilled to be the first to introduce this one-of-a-kind membership for travellers in Europe.

"The Wizz All You Can Fly membership will give customers hundreds of spontaneous travel options for a fixed price, giving them freedom to fly whenever is convenient without paying extra."

You can read all the terms and conditions of the All You Can Fly package here .

We'll continue to bring you fallout from this morning's inflation data - while also focusing on other money news now.

A little later on today we'll have this week's Cheap Eats - with a TV chef picking her favourites at home and in London.

An uptick in inflation was always expected and there could be further increases ahead, an economist has said.

Yael Selfin, chief economist at KPMG, told Sky News the "good news" is core inflation - a key measure monitored by the Bank of England - is coming down.

"But what we do have is energy prices making that headline inflation slightly jumpier, because we had falls in energy prices last year and this year they [will be] going up a little bit again.

"So overall it's upward pressure again on inflation from energy prices."

The "main worry" is whether an uptick in inflation - which could reach 3% later this year - would "feed into stronger wage growth", causing further concern for the BoE, she added.

Let's have a look at what drove a slight rise in the headline inflation rate to 2.2%.

The latest numbers show that downward contributors (ie data that would drive a drop in inflation) in five divisions were offset by upwards contributions from four divisions...

The biggest upward pressure in the headline figure came from housing and household services - encompassing gas and electricity prices, which fell by less than they did last year.

"Although energy prices are lower in July than they were a year ago and are much lower than their peak in the first quarter of 2023, gas and electricity prices are still around 68% and 45% higher, respectively, than in March 2021," the Office for National Statistics said.

There are a few things every traveler needs, no matter where in the world they're going — and a toiletry bag is one of them. The humble case might be an afterthought to some, but these helpful bags are crucial to keeping your travel essentials organized.

We tested 58 toiletry bags and cosmetic cases (and will continue to test them for a period of at least six months) in order to bring to you the best of the best, evaluating their capacity, design, portability, and value. We also considered the overall quality of the bags, as well as their ease of use on real trips.

Taking our test results into consideration, we've put together a list of the best toiletry bags across various categories; you’re sure to find one that suits your needs.

Best Overall

Away large toiletry bag.

This bag holds more than you'd expect from just looking at it.

The limited edition colors often sell out fast.

You might be most familiar with Away for its selection of hardside luggage and weekender bags, but the brand carries travel accessories, too, including this large toiletry bag that earned high marks across the board during our tests.

Though we found the bag to be even roomier than expected, there are so many individual compartments including a clear cosmetic bag, a zippered pouch, two mesh linings, and an exterior pocket, to name a few. You won't be reaching into a bottomless pit, rummaging around for individual products here. We also love that the bag zips open wide enough for you to reach inside with ease. We packed it with both large and small items, from travel-size liquid bottles to makeup brushes, and there was still room for more.

We also noted the durability of the water-resistant nylon, which is lightweight without feeling cheap. The interior of the bag is coated with an easy-to-wipe material, allowing you to clean up any spills quickly. The bag comes in five color options (with limited edition colorways offered on occasion), as well as a smaller size option and a hanging version of the bag.

Most Packable

Aer travel kit 2.

Not only is it packable, but you can hang it up to save counter space at your destination.

Its more petite size means that it's not ideal for full-size toiletries.

Hello, carry-on-only travelers! This toiletry bag by Aer offers the best of both worlds: it's compact enough to stash in your carry-on or personal item, but it's spacious enough to hold all your toiletries. During our tests, we were able to fit hairspray, dry shampoo, conditioner, lotions, deodorant, a small electric toothbrush, toothpaste, perfume, toner, and medications in this bag. Of course, being that this bag is so compact, they were all travel-size products , not full-size ones.

We also loved that this toiletry kit has a hook that you can twist at different angles, making it easy to hang on doorknobs, towel racks, or bathroom bars to save counter space. And we appreciated the fact that it has several interior and exterior pockets for further organization.

The Details: 9 x 6.5 x 3 inches | 8 ounces | 2.5-liter capacity | Cordura ballistic nylon | Water-resistant

Best Waterproof

Line+arc the dopp kit.

This large bag fits just about everything, including large eyeshadow palettes.

It's a bit bulky — and fairly heavy when full.

You might be wondering why you need a waterproof toiletry bag, since it's usually tucked into a larger bag when you're traveling. The answer is simple: bathroom sinks. Toiletry bags often sit on wet surfaces, so it's not a bad idea to invest in a waterproof model like this one by Line+Arc. Though the bag has a loop for hanging, we felt comfortable leaving it on the sink due to its waterproofing, which we found to be particularly effective.

Beyond its waterproof material, we were impressed by this toiletry bag's spaciousness — we could even fit an eyeshadow palette the size of a small book inside — and more specifically, for its wide-open mouth, which allowed us to access everything with ease. Of course, because it's so large, it did get a little bulky and heavy when we packed it full, so it might be best for checked or carry-on suitcases instead of smaller personal items or weekender bags.

The Details: 11 x 6.5 x 3.5 | 1.2 pounds | 3.5-liter capacity | Silicone | Waterproof

Travel + Leisure / Julia Sayers Gokhale

Best Organization

Peak design wash pouch.

The bag is lined with high-density foam for extra protection.

It would be nice if there were more colors to choose from.

When you have a large number of toiletries to bring with you on vacation, the best thing you can do is choose a toiletry bag that helps you keep everything organized. This is that bag! Though it appears small from the outside, the bag is so thoughtfully designed with organizational tools — we found that there's a pocket for just about everything. The main compartment is large enough to fit small bottles, while mesh pockets of various sizes line the walls, so you can tuck in your favorite tinted moisturizer , for example. There's also a separate pocket for your travel toothbrush , which keeps it nice and clean.

Other highlights include a wide opening to access each pocket easily and the ability to stand on its own thanks to the bag's layer of high-density foam that also helps protect the items inside. It also has a handy hanging hook if you'd prefer to keep some counter space clear.

The Details: 10.2 x 6 x 4.4 inches | 8.7 ounces | 2.5-liter capacity | 200D nylon canvas | Weatherproof

Best Dopp Kit

Beis the dopp kit in atlas pink.

It's extraordinarily spacious and capable of holding what three standard-size toiletry bags can carry.

You can only open one compartment at a time.

What’s a dopp kit, anyway? Though the term is used interchangeably with toiletry bag today, the dopp kit was originally devised by German leather maker Charles Doppelt and was popular with military personnel in the 20th century. It typically takes the silhouette seen here in this Béis bag: a large main compartment, sometimes with side pockets.

Béis' dopp kit, however, has an extra compartment beneath the main one (like the well-known Béis weekender bag ). On the plus side, we absolutely love having all this extra space. In our tests, we were able to fit the capacity of three standard toiletry bags into this one. So if you're an overpacker, this is the bag for you. Note that you can only open one compartment at a time, though — the top one needs to be closed if you open the bottom one, otherwise all your items will fall out. But a big pro to this setup is that it's a very sturdy dopp kit, and it stands alone with ease, thanks to its wide base.

The Details: 6.5 x 11 x 6 inches | 14 ounces | Cotton-jute canvas or poly canvas | Water-resistant lining

Best for Men

Bagsmart toiletry bag for men.

It opens wide with a double zipper.

It's made of canvas, which may be hard to clean but is water-resistant.

Fun fact: dopp kits were originally designed for men so it makes perfect sense why this one is designed to fit shaving and grooming products in particular. It's made of canvas for a rough-and-tumble look, and it's offered in six colors (mostly neutrals, but also light pink) and two sizes. Though we consider it sturdy enough to stand on its own, we also found it flexible enough to stuff into a packed weekender.

As for storage capabilities, there's a main compartment that's accessible via a double zipper, which means the kit opens nice and wide for you to be able to access your items. That main compartment can fit bulkier items, while smaller items can fill the pockets along the sides. There are also two separate side pockets, one of which is designed to hold wet items.

The Details: 10.2 x 5.9 x 6.3 inches | 6.4 ounces | Canvas | Water-resistant

Best Hanging Bag

Sea to summit hanging toiletry bag.

Small and lightweight, it's perfectly portable.

It has to hang as it won't stand up on its own.

When it comes to hanging bags, this one is perfectly balanced. It's made from an ultrathin, water-resistant nylon and takes the shape of a saddlebag, which is ideal for hanging. We found that no matter how many items we stuffed in there, the bag never really felt weighed down; all the products were perfectly situated and easy to access, thanks to a plethora of pockets.

This bag also comes with a detachable mirror, which makes it great for outdoor adventures when you don't have access to a vanity, as well as handles for easy transport. Ultimately, it is perfect for people limited on space and weight, whether they're on a multiday trek that requires them to carry all their gear or traveling for an extended period of time with limited storage space. The toiletry bag comes in two sizes (we tested the smaller one) and three color options.

The Details: 9 x 6 x 3 inches (small); 10 x 9 x 4 inches (large) | 2.8 ounces (small); 4 ounces (large) | 3-liter capacity (small); 6-liter capacity (large) | Nylon | Water-resistant

Best Budget

Wandf toiletry bag.

It's the most affordable option on this list and comes in more than 20 colors.

The main compartment only has one zipper, which makes it a little tough to retrieve items.

As you're probably well aware by this point, toiletry bags can get quite expensive — but they don't have to be. This is a particularly budget-friendly model, yet it accomplishes just about everything you'd need a toiletry bag to do. For one, it has multiple compartments. And for another, it's a water-resistant case, which means it can handle being splashed on a bathroom counter.

The compartments are both the success and the downfall of this toiletry bag. We were beyond impressed with the amount of space inside the main compartment, as well as with the two side compartments with mesh pockets. But we found that the main compartment was almost too spacious and could benefit from another divider of some kind. Given its size, it could also benefit from a double zipper opening, which would allow you to access more items throughout the bag than the existing single zipper.

The Details: 10.24 x 4.72 x 5.91 inches | 3.53 ounces | Nylon | Water-resistant

Best Splurge

Tumi response travel kit.

It opens like a clamshell for easy access.

The outer material is not water-resistant.

Luxury brand Tumi doesn't only make high-end suitcases and travel bags — it also makes high-end toiletry bags. Made from ballistic nylon, this is one of the most durable toiletry bags out there, and it wouldn't be surprising if this bag lasted years, even with regular use.

Its best feature is the fact that it opens like a clamshell, with two distinct compartments in each half. That makes it easy to access everything in the bag, whether you're laying it flat on a countertop or you're hanging it via the attached hook. There are four pockets, including one water-resistant one, and two elastic loops to hold products like toothbrushes or razors. We think it’s a reasonably spacious bag, but only for travel-size products — that's why we'd recommend it for short trips rather than long ones.

The Details: 6.3 x 9.5 x 3.5 inches | 14.4 ounces | Ballistic nylon

Other Toiletry Bags We Liked

The following three toiletry bags didn’t quite make our main list but still offer some handy features that some travelers might find useful.

Briggs & Riley Baseline Executive Essentials Kit : This fairly large toiletry bag can hold plenty — we had more than enough room for travel-size hair and skin care products for a weeklong trip. But the lack of interior organization makes it difficult to keep things in place. It might be better suited for carrying fewer larger products instead of numerous smaller ones.

Travel + Leisure / Ella Crosby

Thule Subterra 2 Toiletry Bag : This toiletry bag's standout feature is a removable plastic interior pouch, which you can use to keep liquids separate (a plus for going through airport security and to prevent leaks!). It also has various pockets to keep your things organized.

Bagsmart Large Hanging Toiletry Bag : This hanging toiletry bag has four separate compartments to keep your belongings organized — and it has the capacity to hold many belongings, too. But it's not a particularly protective or durable bag with its softside material, which could be a problem for transporting certain products.

We tested 58 toiletry bags and cosmetics cases in our lab and during real-world tests to determine the best products to travel with. Testing started with an analysis of each bag when it was empty; we examined the materials, the construction, and the overall design.

We packed each bag full with toiletries, makeup, and essentials, taking notes of the case’s capacity and organizational design features, such as compartments, pockets, hanging straps, and hooks. If the toiletry bag was advertised as waterproof, we held the bag under running water to see if anything inside got wet and how quickly the bag dried. We packed the toiletry bags into different types of travel bags to see how portable they felt, including weekenders , carry-ons, and checked luggage.

After our initial lab tests, we sent the toiletry bags home with editors to test for an additional six months on their real-world travels to gather further insights, including how durable they are.

Tips for Buying a Toiletry Bag

Look at the design of the bag.

Some toiletry bags are voids — they have one cavernous space to fit all your items. But others are separated into compartments with pockets and pouches to keep your items in place. Depending on what you're storing in your toiletry bag, you might prefer more organizational tools than a single open space. Some toiletry bags have additional features like built-in mirrors or removable pouches. Also consider the material: more durable, water-resistant materials are ideal for toiletry bags, since they'll be getting quite a bit of use on the road.

Consider capacity and the items you pack

What do you plan on putting in a toiletry bag? If you're a minimalist who carries very few toiletries — say, just face wash and toothpaste — you might only need a small case. But if you have an extensive skincare routine — including sunscreen and after-sun lotion — and you travel with all your makeup, you'll need a bag with enough space for everything.

Think about portability

If you plan on taking your toiletry bag in your carry-on, you'll want it to be as compact and lightweight as possible to save room for everything else in your bag. And if you're packing liquids, gels, or aerosols, make sure your items’ sizes comply with the TSA's 3-1-1 rule . If you're checking your toiletry bag, though, you might have more flexibility with size and weight.

Since toiletry bags frequently come into contact with liquids — either from leaking products or from the bathroom counter — water-resistant or waterproof materials are best. Another factor to consider is durability. Toiletry bags are typically fairly heavily used when you travel, so it's best to look for tear-proof fabric that will hold up over time.

A TSA-approved toiletry bag is one that meets the TSA's requirements for the 3-1-1 rule regarding liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes packed in carry-ons. These products must be 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters or less, and they all must fit in " 1 quart size, clear, plastic, zip top bag ."

You can pack just about anything in a toiletry bag, from heatless hair curlers to body washes to makeup. Depending on what you plan on putting in your toiletry bag, you may want to look for ones with special pockets — many toiletry bags have designated spots for items like makeup brushes or palettes to keep them secure.

Stefanie Waldek is a freelance writer with a decade of experience covering travel — she flies more than 200,000 miles per year and spends dozens of nights in hotels and on cruises. For this article, she incorporated tester feedback and used her own experience with toiletry bags. While she often gravitates toward repurposing airline amenity kits as toiletry bags, she also rotates between Bagsmart, Container Store, and Monos toiletry bags (she particularly likes the latter, as the Mono Metro Kit attaches easily to the outside of the Monos Metro line of bags, saving space inside).
