NOTE: - This cruise control kit is designed to fit the Indian Scout and Scout 60.  We now have confirmation that it will also fit the Scout Rogue, the only difference in the installation is the installer has to remove the fairing to get access to the headlight shell.  Fairing removal  for the Rogue is not covered in our installation instructions.

This kit will also fit a standard Scout Bobber, but we have a dedicated kit for the Scout Bobber that is a bit easier to install.

The bike we used to prototype the cruise is a 2014 model, however we have also fitted a cruise to a 2019 Scout Bobber, and it is functionally the same, so to our knowledge this will fit all model years and versions of the Scout up to and including 2023 models.   On 2022 models, we have seen a couple of bikes with an extension harness on the diagnostic plug.  This extension harness is fitted with the new Euro5 diagnostic plug (small red plug), but the original plug is still on the bike.  At this time we don't know if this is standard issue or a dealer fit or part of an accessory fitment.

The bike's diagnostic plug is located under the seat, behind the battery.  Check the photos and compare to your bike to ensure that your bike has the same plug as that shown in the photos.  Later models may have the small red connector and wires running to the original plug.  As long as the original plug is there the cruise will fit and work in either case.

The Motorcycle Cruise Control unit is adapted specifically for this vehicle, with a custom made and fully plug and play wiring harness, using genuine connectors and terminals as used by the manufacturer. There is no wire splicing or any other permanent changes made to your bike.

  • Please do NOT buy until you have read all the documentation and are certain you have the skills to fit this kit properly.  This applies to dealers and retail customers.

Cruise control computer mounting location.

The cruise control computer is mounted in a special bracket low on the frame on the left side of the engine using the threaded mounting hole for engine crash bars. There are two brackets available, one for bikes without crash bars, and another for bikes fitted with crash bars. Please read the brochure for more details and photos.

We have had a couple of customers asking about mounting the computer on the frame, under the fuel tank in front of the air filter housing. With the standard air filter, there is not enough space to fit the cruise computer, however some have fitted an aftermarket air filter, and they say that this creates more space and the computer will fit there. We have NOT seen these filters, and we have NOT fitted a cruise computer in this location. The wiring harness provided with the cruise control is long enough mount the computer in front of the air filter housing, under the fuel tank if desired. We do not know if it would be long enough to mount the computer behind the air filter. We do not know if the computer really will fit in this location, how the computer can be mounted in this location or if this location may cause reliability issues with the cruise computer due to higher temperatures, although we don't expect temperature to be an issue in this location.

Cruise control switch - there are four options to choose from (see the photos):

  • Our new standard MCCruise switch mounted on the mirror mounting post. This mounting can use the mirror if it is fitted. A suitable bolt and washer are provided in the kit to mount the switch if your bike has bar end mirrors fitted.
  • Our new standard MCCruise switch mounted above the handlebar. This is similar to the mirror mount above, but the switch is lower.
  • Our  new standard MCCruise switch mounted below the handlebar.
  • New Slim MCCruise switch mounted below the handlebar. The mounting method is the same as used on the 2nd option above, but the Slim switch is used instead of our original control switch. Please read the brochure (link below) for details about programming changes in the computer for this control switch which change which buttons are used for SET and RESume.

Cruise Control Switch Wire Length .

Our cruise control switches come with two different switch wire lengths. Normally for this bike the switch provided has the shorter length switch wire, roughly 90cm (35") long from the back of the switch to connecting plug. The switch wire may not be long enough if the bike is fitted with Hi-Rise handlebars. See the brochure for more details about this, including how to measure the wire length needed and how to order a longer switch wire if you need it.

CAN-BUS Diagnostic Dongle Patch Harness

The cruise control connects to the bike's diagnostic connector. In most cases this connector is fitted with a blanking plug, but some other accessories may also connects to the diagnostic plug. If this is the case, a patch harness must be fitted to allow the cruise control AND the other accessory to be connected at the same time. See the last page of the brochure (there is a link below) for more details.

Speed bump setting: The cruise computer is fully configurable by the user for either 1 or 2 km/h or 1 or 2 mph set speed change per SET/ACC or RES/DEC button press.

The electronic cruise control unit is shipped worldwide with all parts, parts list and detailed installation instructions for this kit.

Using Cruise Control

Cruise control on your Indian Motorcycle can be set in gears 3 through 6. To set the cruise, the motorcycle’s speed must be greater than 20 mph (32 km/h). Note that the set speed will vary slightly when riding in hilly terrain.

The cruise control will not resume a pre-set speed if the resulting acceleration or deceleration rate is too high or too low. For example, resuming a set speed of 70 mph (112 km/h) from 40 mph (64 km/h) while in sixth gear may cause the cruise to disengage.

The cruise control will not engage if the brake lights are not operating properly.

The clutch or either brake must have been activated at least once since the ignition was started for the cruise control to function.

Model Year 2018+ Cruiser, Bagger and Touring To set the cruise control speed:

1. Press and release the center of the cruise control switch (1) on the right control. The amber cruise control indicator will illuminate in the instrument cluster. Cruise control is enabled but not set.

Cruise control switch

2. Accelerate to the desired speed and press left on the cruise control switch to activate cruise control. The green cruise control set indicator lamp will illuminate. Cruise control is set to the desired speed.

Resume Speed To resume speed after disengaging the cruise control with the brake, throttle or clutch, press right on the cruise control switch. You will return to the set speed. Make sure to return to the correct gear before resuming cruise control.

Accelerate To accelerate while cruise control is engaged, tap right on the cruise control switch to increase speed in approximately 1 mph (1 to 2 km/h) increments. Press and hold right on the cruise control switch to accelerate to a new set speed (resets when switch is released). Note: If you use the throttle to accelerate and then release it, the cruise control will resume the previously set speed.

Decelerate To decelerate while cruise control is engaged, tap and release left on the cruise control switch to decrease speed in approximately 1 mph (1 to 2 km/h) increments. Press and hold left on the cruise control switch to decelerate to a new set speed (resets when switch is released) or to the minimum cruise speed of 20 mph (32 km/h).

Cancel Cruise Control Any of the following will temporarily cancel the cruise control and allow use of the resume feature:

  • Apply the brakes
  • Pull the clutch lever in
  • Roll the throttle grip forward past the idle position

To cancel the cruise control and erase the set speed from memory, press the cruise on/off switch.

Model Year 2014 - 2017 Cruiser, Bagger and Touring  To set the cruise control speed:

1. Press and release the cruise on/off switch. The amber cruise control indicator will illuminate in the instrument cluster. Cruise control is enabled but not set.

2016 Indian Scout cruiser review

2016 Indian Scout

I’ve now ridden the Indian Scout mid-weight cruiser in three countries and my impressions of this bike have hardly changed … I still love it!

At $17,995 it competes well, even with the metrics, and the build quality is far and away better than any of the other bikes in this section of the market.

Just look at that engine with its artistically pressed cases and the lack of unsightly plumbing hanging out. And even though Indian has had some problems with paint, you won’t find any problems here.

2016 Indian Scout

In fact, they stalled the delivery earlier this year to resolve a paint problem around the tank. Fixed and now it is perfect.

I rode the Scout at its world release at the 2015 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally on the billiard-table-snooth roads of South Dakota just over a year ago and then again late last year at the Australasian launch in Burt Munro territory in the beautiful South Island of New Zealand.

MBW at 2014 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

For the 2016 model year, the only change is the addition of a new redder red warpaint, so the gloss black bike I tested last week when I rode it on the horrible bumpy roads of South East Queensland has not changed my mind about this motorcycle.

I’ve always said the first thing I would change if I bought a Scout was the rear shocks and I stand by that.

They are basically springs. There is no compression or rebound damping and the spring is too soft.

2016 Indian Scout

I find this strange as I’ve had it bottom out and bounce around over big bumps. A $500 set of Gazi shocks would make this such a better bike.

The only other concerns I have are a fair bit of heat from the rear cylinder, a wide turning circle and the unfinished look of the aftermarket saddlebags. The bottom part of the bag clip should be leather and the back of the bags looks unfinished. This stands out because the brown leather contrasts against the black plastic backs.

Everything else is brilliant.

In fact, I will now apologise to readers and largely plagiarise myself by running my previous review with some added comments along the way.

First off, the engine is the main attraction here. It not only looks brilliant with its high-quality sparkling and retro-style ribbed casings, but it’s also a firecracker unit that will send the opposition scurrying.

The Indian Scout has more power and torque than its opposition, is more refined, quieter and far more flexible. It will pull strongly from about 2000 revs and hits the meat of the torque about 3500.

2016 Indian Scout

You will find yourself taking most city corners in first rather than second gear. Thankfully the fuelling is very smooth, so this is no drama.

The short sixth gear actually suits Australia’s speed limits because at 100 or 110km/h it is right in the meat of the peak torque for easy-as roll-on overtaking manoeuvres.

The transmission  is quiet, smooth, clunk free and fault free. You can whip through the cogs with ease.

The engine is also torquey enough to flick through to sixth at 80km/h without labouring the mill.

Top end is stratospheric for a cruiser and you’ll never really need to go there unless you want to take it to the drag strip.

2016 Indian Scout

Optional handlebars, foot controls and seats will make it even more suitable for both taller and shorter riders.

It also feels very slim with no air filters or protruding engine components forcing splayed legs. The handlebar grips are a little on the narrow side, but that should cater for smaller riders and women who are finally catered for by the venerable Indian brand.

On past tests I worried about the comfort of the seat. When you first mount up it feels like there is a ridge under your bum.

2016 Indian Scout

If you’re heading to the Northern Territory with its stretch of unlimited speed zones you may notice a windsock effect at 120km/h-plus. However, there are three optional windscreens to protect most rider heights.

The Korean-made Kenda tyres should be long lasting, but they are not the best for grip on wet roads. In the dry, they feel fine.

The steel-braided brake lines give the front lever plenty of feel and the single disc seems to have enough effect for my 75kg weight.

2016 Indian Scout

The rear brake feels wooden, but I still haven’t locked up the rear wheel, even under hard braking and downshifts thanks to the combination of ABS and a low-compression engine.

The classic instruments are a single round unit with analogue speedo and an LCD screen that includes a clock and toggles between rev counter, odometer, trip meter, engine temperature and low fuel warning via a handy switch on the front of the left switchblock. A fuel gauge would be nice, though.  The self-cancelling indicators work very well.

2016 Indian Scout

Love this bike but agree that OEM suspension is awful. The angle and short travel of the rear shocks mean that many companies existing shocks that would fit based on length won’t actually function well. The front forks have very low spring rates (.55). Luckily a few manufactures have now stepped up, including Ikon (aussie), with replacement front springs and complete rear shocks. Other makes with offerings specifically for the scout include Racetech (front springs and emulator kits and rear G3S shocks), K-tech (‘Bullit’ new tech springless nitrogen struts that suit well visually) and JRi shocks. Average prices; Front springs < $200, front spring +emulator kits about $300, rear shocks about $800. Completely transform the bike and almost compulsory mod, especially on our iffy road surfaces.

Indian Motorcycle Announces its 2016 Lineup

The 2016 Indian Motorcycle lineup.

Ahead of the 75th anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally kicking off next week, Indian Motorcycle has announced its 2016 model lineup, which includes the Scout and five models on the Chief platform.

2016 Indian Scout ABS

2016 Indian Scout (ABS) Powered by a liquid-cooled, DOHC, 4-valves-per-cylinder 1,133cc (69ci) 60-degree V-twin that makes a claimed 100 horsepower and 72 lb-ft of torque, the Scout, which was introduced for 2015, represented a return to Indian’s performance roots. With tough, low-profile styling and a 25.3-inch seat height, the compact Scout is muscular yet accessible. It rolls on 16-inch wheels with chunky tires, 130/90-16 front and 150/80-16 rear. New for 2016 is the availability of ABS, on bikes painted Indian Motorcycle Red only. Claimed curb weight for the standard model is just 538 pounds, and ABS adds only 4 pounds more. MSRP for the 2016 Scout is $10,999 for Thunder Black, $11,299 for new Wildfire Red, Thunder Black Smoke or Silver Smoke, and $11,999 for Indian Motorcycle Red with ABS.

2016 Indian Chief Dark Horse

2016 Indian Chief Dark Horse All of the Chief-based models are powered by the air-cooled, 1,811cc (111ci) 49-degree V-twin, which makes a claimed 119 lb-ft of torque. Announced back in February was the newest addition to the Chief line, the Dark Horse, which has a splash of chrome and everything else done up in menacing matte black. Like other Chief models, it has a 6-speed transmission, belt final drive, cruise control, triple-disc brakes with ABS, and keyless ignition. Built to be an aggressive solo ride, the Dark Horse loses the oil cooler, analog fuel gauge and driving lights of the Chief Classic, and it foregoes a passenger seat and pegs/floorboards (they’re available as accessories for two-up riding). The lightest, fastest Chief in the lineup is available in Thunder Black Smoke only for $16,999.

2016 Indian Chief Classic

2016 Indian Chief Classic Returning unchanged except for a new color is the Chief Classic, Indian’s cruiser standard bearer. It is available in new Pearl White only for $17,999.

2016 Indian Chief Vintage

2016 Indian Chief Vintage For those who want to travel the open road yet maintain an old-school look, the Chief Vintage adds a quick-release windshield, highway bars and removable Desert Tan leather saddlebags (which match the rider/passenger seats, including a touch of fringe). Available in solid colors, Thunder Black ($20,999) or Indian Motorcycle Red ($21,399), or two-tones, new Star Silver and Thunder Black ($21,999) or Willow Green and Ivory Cream ($21,999).

Read our 2014 Indian Chiefs review

2016 Indian Chieftain

2016 Indian Chieftain With its Art Deco-inspired hard fairing and saddlebags on proud display, the Chieftain was a big surprise when it was introduced for 2014—the first hard bagger ever made by Indian. It features an excellent electrically adjustable windscreen, remote saddlebag locks and an audio system with AM/FM/weather band, a media player and Pandora compatibility. Available in solid colors, Thunder Black ($22,999), Indian Motorcycle Red ($23,499) or new Silver Smoke ($23,499), or two-tone, Star Silver and Thunder Black ($24,199).

Read our 2014 Indian Chieftain review

2016 Indian Roadmaster

2016 Indian Roadmaster Although it was designed at the same time as the original 2014 Chief lineup, the Roadmaster debuted for 2015. Indian’s luxury tourer adds a large, removable trunk, plush rider and passenger seats with separate heating controls (plus a wrap-around passenger backrest and adjustable passenger floorboards) and removable fairing lowers with storage compartments. Like the Chieftain, it features keyless ignition, cruise control and remote luggage locks. Indian’s flagship is available in solid colors, Thunder Black ($27,999), new Blue Diamond ($28,599), or two-tones, Springfield Blue and Ivory Cream ($29,399), Indian Motorcycle Red and Ivory Cream ($29,399) or new Storm Gray and Thunder Black ($29,399).

Was Cruise control for Scout? Revisited... Now new one on the bike!

cruise control for 2016 indian scout

  • Add to quote

I have encountered another small problem that maybe others have already solved? With the tapered bar ends going from 1 inch to 7/8 inch sizes where the controls are attached presents a new problem. How do I install a cruise control on the Scout? Doing long distance rides here in wide open West Texas makes it very necessary for ME to have a cruise control on the throttle. The usual ways I have used in the past wont work readily without some southern engineering! My first solution is to install a thick rubber "O" ring between the grip and the inside house to create a friction type solution, but that is kind of inconvenient to use. If nothing else, I like a cruise control just to rest my throttle hand or to just scratch my nose while going down the road. LOL!

OMNI-CRUISE: Universal Motorcycle Throttle Lock Is what I use

cruise control for 2016 indian scout

I did the O-ring on my Nomad for years. It worked great and cost next to nothing. I find the cruise control on my Chieftain to be a royal pain in the ass compared to the O-ring. Operating that thing with gloves on is a two handed operation.

Not a bad idea, thanks for sharing

You operate the Chieftain cruise with your thumb, but none of the controls are glove friendly, and I can't hold the throttle and reach the controls with my thumb at the same time.

You hooked me with this thread title, but.... A throttle lock is not cruise control. That's fairly obvious. That's like talking bout your staycation on a thread entitled vacation. Back in the day, 28 thou miles thru Mexico on the Honda Trail 90, I used a simple paper matchbook between throttle grip and mirror clamp. Cheap enough. Works.

Outstanding Jarhead, I bought one of them too, but it is still laying in my tool room, because I got scared trying to cut into the rubber on the grip because it has metal, or very hard plastic, in the bell shaped end. How did you pare it down to install the Vista Cruise? That damned grip is TOUGH!!! LOL! I would have much preferred your choice, which was also my first choice, by the way! I have a set of ST-1100 bar ends in the shop that I am debating putting on mine. Did you find that it reduced vibrations in the bars?

Lookit you happy Scout owners farkling away. Goddamn you all to hell and gone. Me, I'm getting fretful. Not built for this much broken promises. I wanna farkle and ride. Tell you one thing: I'm never doing this again.

Dang!

I'm not saying Motorcycle throttle lock Universal doesn't work on all motorcycles or that it doesn't work on the Scout, just that it doesn't work well on the Scout because of the shape of the brake lever and the area that it hits the lever. It lands right on the crook in the lever and after it sets the vibrations migrates it to the left on the forward end and looses the adjustments you made to keep a steady speed. Also to get it to stop that process you have to make it so tight that it is hard to move to set or make incremental adjustments to your speed! Once you buy one and try it out on a Scout you will most likely arrive at the same conclusion. I just don't like the jinky way it works on the Scout and having to keep loosing my valuable driving attention being diverted while constantly compensating for a better operation of that lock. It just isn't right for the Scout lever arrangement and shape! Looking at jimbojr's specific arrangement of the lock, the leather wrap on his grip may keep this from happening! If you don't believe me, I understand! But if I pissed on an electric fence and didn't like it and told you of my experiences with the fence and you still want to test it out, knock your lights out! I just wanted to give the benefit of my experience with that specific throttle lock on my Scout and possibly save someone the money they might spend to get their own valuable experience! <VBG> If you choose to ignore or even consider my information, good luck on that fence information too! <G>

From David of Atlas: By the looks of the pictures you sent me, you will need to move the grip over a bit before the ATLAS can properly fit. It might fit perfectly as is, or you may need to move the grip only 0.03" or so. Not too big of a procedure. Some of these grips are rubber adhered to plastic, which would require a bit of cutting of the rubber grip flange with a razor blade (which I know isn't ideal). You need a minimum of 0.12" between the throttle housing and the hardened grip flange. This allows the ATLAS to really clamp onto the plastic throttle sleeve and rotate without resistance. We have done our best to provide a bolt-on solution for every bike out there, but sometimes the owners will need to do minor customizations to their throttles so they can fully utilize this long distance riding farkle. Let me know if you can slide your grip over a bit to fit the ATLAS and I will get back to you once I hear from the Indian dealership. [About fitment on a live Scout]

mjw930 said: From digging around their site the 6CP03 model looks like the closest possible fit since it connects to the brake lever bolt instead of asking you to slide the brake lever housing to the left 1/4". Click to expand...

I heard back from Breakaway, they claim it won't fit but they have never tried. If it wasn't $190 I'd buy one and see.

Just wondering if anyone ever purchased the Break Away to try it on the Scout?? If not, has anyone found any updates in the last year to cruise control for the Scout? I have the new Kuryakyn spear grips.

I went back a read all of the old posts here, and am still coming up perplexed. Here's the deal - I had some amazing Avon 1.5" foam grips installed at Daytona. I love them! They were also selling the Go-Cruise type throttle lock but when they put it on, it didn't disengage when the brake was applied, so they said it wasn't safe and wouldn't sell it to me. (Kudos to Avon for putting safety first!) So now, I still need a throttle lock, I just need it for a 1.5" grip! Does that make it harder or easier to get one? Should I look for some HD types? I do like the Vista Cruise (for price and function) but don't know if it will fit over the new grip? How adjustable is it? This is the grip I got: Memory Foam Anodized Medium 1.500" - Avon Grips (Or one very much like it.) Any ideas? I was looking at the Atlas but the price keeps stopping me especially when the Vista is $100 less. Thoughts?

I won't drag this out as I've done a full review somewhere on this site of the Atlas Throttle Lock some 47 or so thousand miles back. They just up-dated the Atlas and offered me a discount, but have no issue with the original, that is in fact the first Atlas lock installed on a Scout, my Scout. 47,000 miles, about 2 1/2 years without a hiccup.

Had the Brakeaway control on Kuryarkyn Spear grips and works ok. However the problem with the Brakeaway is it can't get the Scout to sit on a constant speed. As you press the lock button you're very slightly rolling the throttle open and I found I'm having to constantly tweak the throttle otherwise it's speeding up slowly or slowing down slowly. Why can't Indian introduce a retro fit CC, the Scout has a computer and it's only writing some code and renewing the throttle housing to accommodate the CC switch. 12. 2016 Indian Scout cruiser review

The Indian Scout has more power and torque than its opposition, is more refined, quieter and far more flexible. It will pull strongly from about 2000 revs and hits the meat of the torque about 3500. The six-speed transmission has a tall first gear and a short top gear making it a close-ratio box which is unusual for a cruiser.
