Space announce Spiders & Tin Planer 25th Anniversary Tour

Space have announced a string of dates for 2023; the 11 date Spiders & Tin Planet 25th Anniversary Tour UK tour is set to mark the jubilee anniversary of the bands Spiders , and Tin Planet albums. In addition, original guitarist Jamie Murphy will be joining the band for this run of dates.

Spiders was released via Gut Records in 1996 and peaked at #6 in the UK Album Chart, going on to sell in excess of 800,000 copies in its first two years of release. Various singles were drawn from the album including Me And You Versus The World, which broke into the UK Top 10, whilst Female Of The Species reached #14, though also charted in the United States and Canada.

Tin Planet was released in March 1998 and peaked at #3 in the UK Album Chart, the album was released to a worldwide audience and charted in countries including Australia, New Zealand. The album spawned four singles, all of which entered the UK Top 40, most notably Avenging Angels, and The Ballad Of Tom Jones on which frontman Tommy Scott duetted with Cerys Mathews of Catatonia, this reaching #4 in the UK Top 10, and earning a Silver Disc on the back of at least 200,000 sales.

Both albums have recently been reissued on coloured vinyl via Demon Records . Most recently the band released the Music For Pleasure, Music For Pain album and continue to extensively tour ( LTW Review Sept 2020 ), the UK and abroad.

L7 have announced the In Your Space Tour. It includes dates in September and October at U.S. venues. “The energy and vibe that smaller venues allow is something that we always want to stay connected to, and with a new single in the works, we can’t wait to see our crowd up close and in the flesh,” L7 singer Donita Sparks said in a statement. William Shatner says he's 'so filled with emotion' after reaching edge of space

More than 50 years after he debuted as the beloved Capt. James T. Kirk in the original series of "Star Trek," William Shatner boldly flew to the edge of space.

The 90-year-old actor launched Wednesday aboard a rocket and capsule developed by Blue Origin, the private spaceflight company founded by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The historic joyride made Shatner the oldest person to reach space .

"It was unbelievable," Shatner said shortly after emerging from the capsule. "I'm so filled with emotion."

Shatner and three other crew members — Audrey Powers, Blue Origin’s vice president of mission and flight operations, and two paying customers, Glen de Vries and Chris Boshuizen — rode Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket and capsule to the edge of space. Liftoff occurred at around 10:50 a.m. ET and the entire flight lasted roughly 10 minutes.

Bezos escorted the four passengers to the launch pad and greeted them after their spacecraft touched down again. After Shatner climbed out of the capsule, he hugged Bezos and shared how moved he was by the brief trip.

"What you have given me is the most profound experience I can imagine," he told Bezos through tears. "I am overwhelmed. I had no idea."

Shatner recalled feeling jittery before liftoff, and spoke about what it was like to accelerate to the edge of space. He also described seeing the planet's thin atmosphere and gazing back at the curvature of Earth.

"There's this soft blue," Shatner said. "And it’s so thin. And you’re through it in an instant."

During the flight, the "Star Trek" actor tweeted a quote from the 17th-century physicist Isaac Newton: "I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, diverting myself in now & then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me."

The mission was delayed by nearly an hour as crews at the launch pad worked to ensure that the rocket was ready for flight. Previously, high winds at the Texas launch site also forced Blue Origin to push the expedition from its originally scheduled time earlier in the week.

In an interview last week with TODAY , Shatner spoke about his anticipation for the upcoming flight.

“I’m going to see the vastness of space and the extraordinary miracle of our Earth and how fragile it is compared to the forces at work in the universe — that’s really what I’m looking for," he said.

Shatner's trip was Blue Origin's second launch of an all-civilian crew. The company's inaugural flight in July was a high-profile and high-stakes event, with Bezos, his brother and two other passengers onboard.

The New Shepard rocket and capsule are designed for suborbital jaunts, which don't actually enter into orbit around Earth but rather fly to the edge of space, at an altitude of more than 65 miles, where passengers can experience around four minutes of weightlessness.

Wednesday's flight launched from a site in west Texas, southeast of El Paso. After liftoff, the rocket accelerated toward space at three times the speed of sound. At an altitude of approximately 250,000 feet, the New Shepard capsule separated, taking Shatner and his crew members to the edge of space.

After reaching a peak altitude of 351,000 feet, the craft then descended under parachutes and landed again in the Texas desert.

Shatner's expedition was the latest in what has been a recent flurry of space tourism flights. Nine days before Bezos flew to the edge of space, British billionaire Richard Branson completed his own suborbital joyride , riding aboard a rocket-powered vehicle developed by his own space tourism company, Virgin Galactic.

Neither Blue Origin nor Virgin Galactic have announced final pricing for their suborbital flights, but tickets are expected to cost several hundreds of thousands of dollars.

And in addition to trips to the edge of space, people with deep pockets may soon be able to pay for orbital experiences and more prolonged stays in microgravity.

Last month, SpaceX, the spaceflight company founded by billionaire Elon Musk, launched four private passengers into orbit around Earth on a three-day expedition. That flight made history as the first orbital launch with an all-civilian crew .

SpaceX is also preparing to launch three private passengers, who each paid $55 million, to the International Space Station in early 2022.

It’s a solid gold Royal Oak, so it’s a joy to wear and photograph, as I expected. What I didn’t expect when handling this watch—as well as one previously belonging to Mars’s bass player at Sotheby’s earlier this year—was sadness.

When Mars surprised his band with the watches, he took to social media with photos of the backstage presentation and wrote, “My boys continue to show the world what time it is, and a band that sings together blings together!” Mars broke up the Hooligans after that tour, and then the pandemic hit, halting the careers of touring musicians around the world. So far, the Hooligans have yet to sing together since, and with at least four of these custom Royal Oaks having been flipped, it appears they’re no longer blinging together, either.

Putting emotions to the side, however, we can’t fault the collectability of these customized Royal Oaks, nor can we fault the timing of these flips. In 2018, when Mars gifted the watches, the watch market was just building serious steam. By 2020 the watch market was booming, and by 2022 it was off the chain —especially for Royal Oaks. It’s hard not to imagine that some of these musicians found their bank accounts hungrier than their sense of horological nostalgia. (One collector I spoke with suggested that Mars may have given his band these watches as a kind of nest-egg, though I think that’s a stretch, especially given the customization.)

The initials on the rotors are thinly veiled clues. For example, I had no idea which manager it was that Mars had given the blue-dial watch to, but a little internet searching revealed that the only match to “AE” would be Aaron Elharar. This special one-of-a-kind blue example is going to set you back $200,000 .

Sotheby’s sold another one of the band’s watches with a gold dial in June, and this one likely belonged to the bass player, Jamareo Artis. The “JA” on the rotor makes that obvious, and Sotheby’s head of watches Jeff Hess told me as much when I previewed the timepiece earlier this year. Interestingly, this watch also sold in a direct on-line sale (with no price disclosed) to a private collector who may have been the one to re-flip it at Sotheby’s for $120,000 . When Artis might have first flipped it remains unclear.

That’s at least four that are no longer with their original owners, and possibly five, should that one with the hidden rotor turn out not to be one of the ones being flipped elsewhere. How quickly provenance scatters in the digital winds.

Since the Hooligans disbanded, Mars started a new band called Silk Sonic, which appears to still be up and running. Perhaps we will be seeing some Silk Sonic watches flipped when Mars moves on again to another artistic phase and another band—which, frankly speaking as a music guy, is a mark of a great artist.
