Customer Market

Digital Strategy, Commentary from C-Level Executives, and Marketing Tech Stack

  • Genesco business strategy is anchored on a strong, direct-to-consumer model, driven by a developing digital platform. The strategy maximizes the connection between digital and physical channels to increase scale and profitability. The company plans to invest more in infrastructure and technology that support omnichannel and digital retailing , and possibly lower its total square footage and store count, while enhancing productivity in existing sites.
  • Genesco's Board has made strategic changes towards tackling the increasing significance of digital, shifts in retail, and the subsequent demand for scale and system efficiencies. According to Jonathan R. Komp (Senior Research Analyst — Active Lifestyles at R.W. Baird & Co.), " a combination of the existing set of initiatives with recent moves to create the position of Chief Strategy and Digital Officer, will encourage enhanced performance . ”
  •   Mimi E. Vaughn (Genesco President and CEO) stated that the company leverages its investments in digital commerce capabilities to stay actively connected with its customers. Targeted actions along with the swift turn in online trading fueled a triple digit e-commerce comp profit in April and 64% comp increase for Q1. E-commerce sales grew further in May, according to Vaughn.
  • As part of its overall Digital and IT transformation strategy to conform with internal obligations, stay competitive, or resist threats from disruptive forces to increase overall productivity, Genesco leverages Jesta I.S. Vision SCM for Supply Chain Management, UKG Ready Talent Acquisition (former Kronos Workforce Ready Talent Acquisition) for Recruiting, and Accruent Lucernex for Lease Management.
  • Genesco’s modernization strategy is driven by Jesta’s Vision Sourcing & Demand software to scale and standardize its end-to-end supply chain resources. The company has been leveraging Jesta’s Vision Merchandising solution for more than 20 years, and Jesta’s foundational ERP solution has been instrumental in scaling Genesco’s head office marketing operations and exponential growth. According to Rik Reitmaier (CIO at Genesco), “Genesco focused on performance benchmarks such as agile, innovative, scalable, and robust, when it wanted to upgrade its sourcing technology.”
  • During the second half of Fiscal 2022, the company experienced supply chain challenges resulting in increased freight and logistics costs associated with inventory purchases from contractors. These costs increased overall sales cost by almost $12.7 million and adversely impacted gross margin .
  • Journeys group encountered inventory shortages in the first quarter of Fiscal 2022. The brand had insufficient winter merchandise to meet demands in February, and there was delay in the delivery of spring styles caused by supply chain disruption . Vaughn stated that Genesco’s performance would have been stronger if there was inventory to fulfill demands at Journeys . However, the brand delivered a “laudable” quarter despite its inventory challenges.
  • There is significant risk associated with doing business with a fashion-conscious customer base and relying on their ability to respond to trends, shop items that reveal such trends, and properly manage inventories considering the possibility for sudden fluctuations in fashion, customer taste, or other extrinsic demand drivers. Lack of proper execution of these actions impacts negatively on product margins, sales, operating income, and cash flows.
  • In 2021, Legion Partners Asset Management, — owner of about 5.6% of Genesco’s remaining common shares — criticized the brand structure, capital allocation, board experience and absence of social, environmental and diversity focus, amongst other things. The investment organization called for the possible consideration of divestment of a new growth strategy for Journeys .
  • Legion's digital proposals were either obsolete, already executed or simply inappropriate for the Journeys' client base. During the pandemic, Journeys e-commerce business increased by about 80%, as its customers opted for Journeys products because of its captivating digital offering . The brand’s focus on its teen customer base drives its digital, social media, omnichannel, and marketing decisions. Legion's recommendations revealed a lack of awareness of the market and Genesco's business.

Vaughn added that Gallione’s “distinct desire” to develop a world class organization with a strong foundation of culture and talent will “define his legacy.”

“He has been a respected member of our leadership team, and we will wish him the very best in a well-deserved retirement,” the CEO continued . “I am confident that as a result of his work and the strong team in place, Journeys is well positioned for tremendous success in the years ahead.”

Gallione began his career with the company in the Chicago area serving as a part-time Jarman sales associate in 1977 when he was a junior in high school. He was then promoted to manager and served in a variety of field sales management positions until 1987. At that time, Gallione was promoted to the corporate offices and became a merchandiser trainee for Jarman/Flagg under the company’s U.S. Retail division. Over the next few years, he rose through the ranks being named the divisional merchandise manager for Journeys in 1994, assuming the additional title of vice president in 1998. In October 2006, he was named SVP, GMM of the Journeys Group.

Gallione added in a statement that it “has been an honor” to work with the extraordinary team at Journeys and Genesco.

“As I look back, especially over the past six years as president, I am incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished including successfully expanding our digital transformation enabling us to serve our customers with the right products in the ways our teens want to shop, as well as successfully managing through an unprecedented pandemic,” Gallione said. “Our outstanding people have created the industry-leading teen footwear retail brand that is now serving its fourth generation. I am excited to help execute a seamless transition and see how this team takes Journeys to the next level.”

Genesco is expected to report its second quarter earnings on Thursday.

Journeys to close more than 120 stores in 2024

A footwear chain expects to close more stores next year than previously planned.

Journeys now expects to close more than 120 stores next year, its parent company Genesco said in its first quarter earnings report on Thursday. Genesco has previously announced it expected to close 60 stores in 2024 (fiscal year).

The news comes after Genesco reported a seven percent decrease in sales in the first quarter.

By closing more stores, the company now anticipates to save up to $40 million instead of the $20 million to $25 million it announced previously.

Journeys sells footwear, apparel, and accessories, and has more than 800 stores across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada.

Journeys hasn’t released a list of the store closings.

There are 37 Journeys/Journeys Kidz stores in Pennsylvania, according to its website. There are Journey and Journey Kidz stores at the Capital City Mall in Lower Allen Township and Journey stores at the Park City Center in Lancaster and the York Galleria Mall in Springettsbury Township, York County.

As of April 29, Genesco had 1,396 stores among its brands, which include Journeys, Journeys Kidz, Little Burgundy, Schuh, and Johnston & Murphy.

“Following a positive end to the holiday season, the first quarter proved considerably more challenging than we anticipated,” Mimi E. Vaughn, Genesco’s board chair, president and CEO, said in the earnings report. “Consumer demand at Journeys dropped off significantly early in the quarter and did not improve as we changed seasons in the latter part of March and into April, offsetting another quarter of record sales at Schuh and Johnston & Murphy. In response, we are taking swift actions to mitigate the consumer shift in the marketplace, including closing more underperforming Journeys stores, reducing our cost base further, and working to quickly refine our product assortment.”

AS an alternative to regular cruises, hotel barges, river boats and freighters offer vacations that provide a different perspective, combining the historical with the scenic. As Thomas Jefferson wrote of the Canal du Midi in France in 1787, ''Of all the methods of traveling I have ever tried, this is the pleasantest . . . you should not think of returning to America without taking the trip which I have taken.''

Slow-moving barges for 4 to 22 passengers furnish an intimate view of the landscape and contact with residents, and most offer excursions by bicycle or minibus. Some also provide hot-air balloon rides. Fresh food and produce from the regions visited add to the pleasure.

Somewhat less intimate are trips on major rivers on specially adapted river boats, carrying 60 to 200 passengers. A notable exception is the Mississippi Queen, which accommodates 400 passengers. Certain rivers, like the Amazon and the Orinoco, are so deep that regular cruise ships ply them, and the St. Lawrence has cruise ships as well as smaller river boats exploring its upper reaches.

Classical music accompanies passengers on the Danube River and on land when Exprinter Cruises' Danube Princess sets forth on six-night cruises from Passau, West Germany, on April 8 and Oct. 28.

Freighter travel provides a leisurely way to see exotic ports. Most carry 4 to 12 passengers, but Ivaran Line's Americana takes 80 to South America. Freighters are heavily booked, and passengers need flexibility; departures depend on cargo requirements. Children under 6 and adults over 75 are not accepted. People over 65 need a certificate of good health.

Frequently asked questions, what is the trans-siberian railway.

By definition, the Trans-Siberian railway is the longest railroad of Russia and the world, connecting the central part of the country with the Far East. If you look at the Trans-Siberian railway route map , you'll see that the train begins its journey in Moscow, following further through the Volga River, turning to the Ural Mountains and Siberia.

In the city of Yekaterinburg, the train turns to Omsk and Novosibirsk, crossing the Ob River, following Krasnoyarsk and heading to the Yenisei. Further, the road goes to Irkutsk, winding along the southern coast of the majestic Lake Baikal. The train runs through a small territory of the Gobi Desert and Khabarovsk, straight to the final destination, Vladivostok. The total Trans-Siberian Railway length adds up to around 9200 kilometers (5716 mi)!

How long does it take to travel on the Trans-Siberian Railway?

Generally, traveling from one side of Russia to the other takes 7 days provided that you go by Moscow to Vladivostok direct train without any stops en route. However, if you plan to discover more of Russia and explore some destinations during 1 to 2-day stops along your way from Moscow to Siberia, the time can vary a lot, depending on which cities you plan to stay in and for how long.

How many time zones does the Trans-Siberian Railway cross?

Traveling Trans-Siberian railroad can be compared with traveling through time as the railway covers 8 time zones! Interestingly, Russia has a total of 11 time zones. Moreover, the difference in time between Moscow and Vladivostok is 7 whole hours! Thus, when it's afternoon in the Russian capital, it is dinnertime in Vladivostok.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway safe?

In general, the Trans-Siberian train journey is quite safe. However, we would advise to consider the human factor and recommend to take a ticket to the compartment with a door that can be locked from the inside (these are 1st or 2nd class sleeper cars of regular Russian trains ) as to not to worry about all the valuable things you take with you. It is a simple precaution but never keep your valuables unattended or scattered around the compartment, especially while you're sleeping.

What is the best time for Trans-Siberian Railway journey?

Planning a voyage of a lifetime, you can't but think about the best season for your Trans-Siberian expedition. Well, it is hard to advise upon this question as the answer totally depends on what type of landscape you are attracted to most. If you are charmed by the pictures of white slopes and dense forests covered with crunchy snow, you should definitely plan your trip between November and February. But, anyway, we guess you won't be surprised at all by hearing that the most popular months for trips to Siberia along the world's longest railroad are between May and August. This time of the year provides the most comfortable weather conditions to explore the cities at all the Trans-Siberian stops as well as to admire breathtaking views of Siberian taiga, gorgeous Lake Baikal, sloping hills of Mongolia , and a lot more both from the train window and during stops.

What are the best stops on the Trans-Siberian Railway?

The first thing you should take into the account is that you can start your Trans-Siberian journey either from the west or the east. The choice of the direction depends on whether you are going to make Moscow , Vladivostok , Ulan Bator , or even Beijing the last point of your trip. Usually, a Trans-Siberian tour includes such Russian cities as Moscow, Kazan, Ekaterinburg, Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude , Khabarovsk, and Vladivostok. Each of the cities mentioned has something unique and special that will help you to see Russia and its culture from different angles so it is really hard to distinguish the best destinations. However we can assure you that any Siberian railroad tour won't do without visiting the real gem of the region, stunning Lake Baikal, so the stop in Irkutsk is an unmissable one. If you decide to enrich your vacation by immersing into the charms of Asia, you may extend your Trans-Siberian itinerary with the northern capital of Russia, Saint Petersburg as well as the capital cities of Mongolia and China. You may read more about the best stops on the Trans-Siberian railway on the Most Famous Russian & Siberian Cities page .

How to travel along the Trans-Siberian Railway?

How many bridges does the trans-siberian railway cross.

The Trans-Siberian railroad crosses 16 large rivers, including the Volga, the Irtysh, the Kama, the Ob, the Yenisei, the Amur, and some others. The total number of bridges that the train passes from start to finish is 3901. Interestingly, the summed distance of all these bridges is more than 100 km (62 miles)!
