Kenya Safari Lodges

Welcome to Kenya Safari Lodges

Visiting Kenya Safari Lodges is possibly the most unique and special wildlife safari experience in the world.

Kenya is the world’s original safari destination – think “Out of Africa” of colonial times.

When you are looking for the best luxury safari lodges in Kenya, you might think that you have your job cut out for you.

However, East Africa and Kenya have many ultra-luxurious safari lodges and hotel options – from luxury safari lodges to adventurous camps in the wild.

Where else can you enjoy a truly phenomenal wildlife safari, relax on a tropical palm-fringed white sandy beach and experience timeless ethnic tribal cultures which have somehow managed to remain unchanged – the answer is always Kenya!

With Kenya Safari Lodges there is such a massive choice of national parks and private concessions safari areas in Kenya that the discerning guest can admire breathtaking scenery and dense game populations in peaceful surroundings.

Kenya is probably best known for its part of the annual Great Migration – one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.

Sharing a border with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, the iconic Maasai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s most famous safari destination – and it’s got the wildlife to back up its reputation.

Below you will find a handful of Kenya Safari Lodges pick of the best safari parks and concessions.

The Great Migration in Kenya :

One of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.

Millions of wildebeest and zebra head for the lush plains of the Masai Mara in April each year.

The journey takes them across approximately 1900 miles and the most spectacular part of their journey is the river crossings where constant danger lurks in the form of lions and crocs.

You can witness this spectacle if you happen to visit the Mara between July and October of each year.

Masai Mara National Reserve Safari Lodges:

The Masai Mara National Reserve Safari Lodges are easily the most visited safari destination in Kenya.

The Masao Mara is located close to the Tanzanian border, in the north-western corner of Kenya.

The Big 5 roam the vast open golden plains which stretch as far as the eye can see.

The Masai is everyone’s safari dream, and this part of Kenya offers many safari lodges and camps, which will suit any budget.

Visitors can choose to stay in the reserve itself, or in one of the many neighbouring private conservancies if they would prefer a more intimate and exclusive safari experience.

Amboseli & Chyulu Hills Safari Lodges :

Amboseli & Chyulu Hills Safari Lodges is a popular area due to the fantastic views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The Amboseli is also ideal to combine with a luxury safari in the Masai Mara.

The landscapes in this area are dry and dusty and the vegetation is sparse, which is great for game viewing.

The massive herds of elephants are a main draw card to this region.

Some of these elephants in the Amboseli sport the largest and most impressive tusks ever seen.

The Amboseli is ideal for your Kenya safari lodge experience.

Next to Amboseli are the Chyulu Hills, an oasis of green dominated by towering volcanoes and sparkling hot springs.

Laikipia Safari Lodges :

The Laikipia Plateau is north of Nairobi.

Laikipia isn’t one reserve, but rather a patchwork of private ranches, conservancies, and farms.

As well as being a beautiful safari area of Kenya, the Laikipia offers unique and different experiences.

Not only does the Laikipia boast some of the highest wildlife densities in the country, but it’s also a beacon for ground-breaking conservation projects.

Here you can head out into the African bush on a 4×4 safari vehicle, on foot, on horseback and so much more.

Combine this with some stunning private Kenya safari lodges and camps and the Laikipia is hard to beat as a safari destination.

Diani Beach Resort :

Diani Beach is a major beach resort on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya.

Located just south of the sultry city of Mombasa, Diani’s flawless beach is easy to get to and the perfect place for a beach vacation.

Diani Beach is about 10km long, from the Kongo River to the north and Galu Beach.

The Diani airstrip is located close to the beach and places to stay.

The ocean remains shallow near shore, with some underwater sandbars near the surface which allow wading with a clear view of the sandy bottom.

A laid-back melee of boutique hotels, private houses and castaway-chic retreats, the resort is more sophisticated than others on the coast.

By day, life at Diani Beach is all about the warm, turquoise seas with kitesurfing, paddleboarding, snorkelling and sailing on offer.

By night, head into town for colourful cocktails as the sun sinks and take your pick of the fabulous restaurants and bars.

Samburu National Reserve Safari Lodges :

Samburu National Reserve is one of the most famous safari destinations in Kenya and East Africa.

The Samburu National Reserve is in northern Kenya and is a premier game reserve situated on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River.

Far from being dull, this extraordinary landscape supports animals uniquely adapted to the drier, rockier conditions.

Samburu National Reserve is a fascinating Kenya safari destination for its unique wildlife which is abundant regardless of its desert like climate.

Samburu, as a wildlife ecosystem, now also comprises several Conservancies and group ranches bordering the main reserve such as the Kalama Conservancy, West Gate Community Conservancy and Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy.

Msambweni Beach :

Msambweni Beach is located on a quiet stretch of Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline between Mombasa and the border with Tanzania to the south.

Msambweni Beach is dominated by the upscale beach resort of the same name.

The beautiful beach comprises close to three kilometres of soft white sand contrasted against the deep green of the surrounding vegetation and the sparkling blue of the Indian Ocean.

Meru National Park Safari Lodges :

The Meru National Park is situated east of Meru and is one of the most popular parks to visit on your visit to Kenya safari lodges.

At this Kenya safari park tall grass and seasonally flooded lowlands covers some of the landscape.

Meru National Park can be accessed by air transfers and safari drives.

Unhindered by crowds of tourists, game-viewing in Meru National Park is an authentic and unique affair.

The Big 5 can be found roaming its savannahs and lush woodlands, although the elusive leopard and cheetah prefer to remain hidden.

The fauna and flora of Meru National Park are diverse and serve as a breathtaking setting for any Kenya Safari.

On game viewing adventures wildlife such as elephants, rhinos, hippos, lion, leopard, cheetah, black rhino, and antelope can be seen.

The Meru National Park attractions include the Tana River and views of Mount Kenya.

Accommodation in Meru is offered at safari camps and lodges and activities include game drives, fishing, sundowner cruises and bushwalking safaris.

Lewa Downs Safari Lodges :

The Lewa Downs is a stunning valley set in the middle of the Laikipia Plateau.

Within the Lewa Downs, you will probably find the second-best game viewing in Kenya.

Only offering a handful of safari lodges to choose from, the Lewa Downs has become famous for the wide variety of rare and beautiful game species.

As Lewa Downs is private land (not a national park owned by the state), the added benefit of staying here is that it is possible to walk, night safari drive, horse, and camel ride.

Lewa Downs is very simple to get to with flights up from Nairobi or the Mara.

Lake Naivasha Safari Lodges :

Lake Naivasha derives its name from the Maasai word for “rough water” due to the sudden storms that are known to frequent the area.

Easily accessible from Nairobi, the lake is a refreshing day trip or weekend break from Kenya’s busy capital.

Lake Naivasha has many different types of wildlife with a good portion of hippos and fish.

There are 400 species of birds.

There are many luxury Lake Naivasha safari lodges around the lake, and it is your ideal Kenya safari lodge destination.

Lamu Island Resorts :

The dreamy Lamu Island sits in the warm Indian Ocean off Kenya’s coast where time has all but stopped.

Donkeys are the main form of transport, and its strong Swahili Muslim culture has remained unchanged for centuries.

Very possibly Africa’s ultimate beach hideout, the island is sultry and spicy, bohemian, and charming.

In Lamu Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Arabic, Omani and Portuguese influences, winding, donkey-filled alleys lead to elaborate mosques and ornate doors.

The Lamu people are friendly and local guides and dhow captains waiting on the town jetty for your arrival, will insist on showing you around for whatever you decide to pay them.

Lamu Island is the perfect add-on to your Kenya Safari.

Tsavo National Park Safari Lodges:

Tsavo is made up of two separate parks – Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park.

This beautiful national safari park is in Coast of Kenya between Nairobi City and Mombasa.

Steeped in history, the large Tsavo National Park was originally home to a Stone Age community that lived near the Galana River.

Tsavo is nearly 21000 square kilometres – the largest safari lodge destination in Kenya and one of the largest national parks in the world.

The park was split into two due to the railway going from Mombasa to the interior of Kenya.

Tsavo National Safari Park offers a wide range of accommodations making this one of the premier safari destinations in Kenya.

Mount Kenya National Park Safari Lodges :

For the thrill seekers out there, you’ll find the perfect blend of wildlife and mountains to explore.

Mount Kenya National Park, encompassing the area surrounding the mountain itself, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Mount Kenya comprises three magnificent peaks namely Nelion at 5188, Lenana at 4985m and Batian at 5199m – all of which offer various degrees of difficulty.

The lower slopes of Mount Kenya are made up of forested areas, while higher up the vegetation consists mostly of bamboo, whilst, higher still, you will find the timberline forest.

The Mount Kenya National Park is home to the Big 5 (elephant, lion, cheetah, leopard, and rhino).

Mount Kenya itself is an extinct volcano and sits proudly as Kenya’s highest mountain.

Watamu Beach Resorts :

With coconut trees, soft white sand, and soothing warm water, Watamu Beach is the perfect place in Kenya to wind down after a safari adventure.

The untouched coastal paradise is a unique melting pot of Kenyan, Arabic, and Italian culture.

Watamu Beach’s crystal-clear waters make it an excellent location for snorkelling and diving, and the surrounding area is home to an abundance of wildlife.

As part of the Watamu National Marine Park, this area has an amazing underwater life.

Watamu Beach contains 600 fish species, 110 species of stony coral and countless invertebrates.

8 of the Best Luxury Safari Lodges in Kenya

kenya safari lodges hotel

Along with Tanzania , Kenya is the archetypal African safari destination. It is synonymous with the annual Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra, and home to iconic parks like the Maasai Mara National Reserve as well as a slew of private conservancies. For those in search of a truly memorable safari experience, Kenya also offers some of the most luxurious lodges on the continent. In this article, we take a look at a few of our favorites; ranging from classic tented camps to unique private villas.

Cottar's 1920s Safari Camp

Cottar's 1920s Safari Camp  is located far from the crowds in the southeast corner of the Maasai Mara, near the Tanzanian border. Set in a stunning 6,000-acre private conservancy, the camp consists of just 10 luxury tents decorated in a nostalgic 1920s style that recreates the safari golden age. Each white canvas tent comes with an en-suite bathroom, while family rooms include a living room complete with a fireplace. Meet your fellow travelers for dinner and drinks in the communal mess tents; or seek post-game drive relaxation at the swimming pool and spa. Game drives, night drives, and walking safaris all take place in an area known for its abundant wildlife.

Tortilis Safari Camp

Tortilis Camp

Surrounded by acacia woodland,  Tortilis Safari Camp is blessed with some of the best Kilimanjaro views in the business. There are 17 luxuriously furnished Makuti tents, that all come with one main bedroom, en-suite bathroom, and private verandah. For a little extra luxury, book a stay in the camp's exclusive safari house. An on-site garden provides fresh produce for delicious meals served in the main lodge, which in turn overlooks a waterhole frequented by elephants. Other highlights include a swimming pool and spa service.

Mara Bushtops

Orion Hotels

Special Campi ya Kanzi experiences include walking safaris into the Chyulu Hills cloud forest, horse riding and scenic Kilimanjaro flights.

9 of the best safari lodges in kenya.

Safari lodge in Kenya balcony overlooking the bush

Going on an African safari is a dream come true for so many people; it certainly was for me! But with so many places to stay in Kenya, finding the right one for your budget and style can be harder than spotting the elusive leopard! That’s why I’ve written this post to share some of the best safari lodges in Kenya.

Most visitors to Kenya spend their time in a number of different National Parks, so I’ve split the lodges out to the best places to stay in Lake Naivasha, Amboseli, Nairobi National Park and, of course, the Maasai Mara.

Masai Mara Safari Lodges

The Masai Mara features at the top of the list for most visitors to Kenya, and with good reason! The reserve is home to some of the biggest populations of big cats in the country, as well as being a site of the Great Migration.

Some of the best safari lodges in Kenya are in the Masai Mara, and here’s just  some of our favourite lodges :

Mara Explorer Tented Camp

Mara Explorer Tented Camp  is a 5-star camp in the Masai Mara, housing 10 luxurious tents furnished with super comfy beds, hand-carved mahogany furniture and antique chests. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with twin sinks and a shower. But that’s not all… Outside on your private verandah, a free-standing bathtub means you can enjoy open-air bathing whilst looking for hippos and other wildlife along the banks of the Talek River. You really can’t beat Mara Explorer Camp for its position in the African bush!

Game drives happen three times a day in 4×4 safari jeeps with open sides and pop-up roofs for excellent wildlife viewing and photography opportunities. The lodge’s Gold standard guides remain dedicated to helping you get the most out of each day’s sightings. You also have the option to head out on hot air balloon safaris, nature walks and cultural visits to nearby Masai villages.

Back at the camp, there are sofas, a bookshelf and a fully-stocked bar in the central lounge to keep you entertained in between game drives and mealtimes. Speaking of which… the resident chefs serve beautifully presented and delicious food at Mara Explorer Tented Camp, making it one of the best safari lodges in Kenya for foodies! The meals are served on a central verandah overlooking the river, but you can also opt for bush dining experiences for an extra special treat.

Porini Mara Camp

Porini Mara Camp  is set in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy, close to the Masai Mara National Park. The conservancy is a beautiful area of wilderness, with a huge variety of landscapes and wildlife. In the rivers, you might spot crocodiles and hippos, while on the open plains, you have an excellent chance of seeing big cats, including cheetahs and lions. Even leopards have been known to frequent the acacia trees surrounding the camp. If you’re really lucky, you might spot one!

Being set in a conservancy rather than the national park, you can enjoy sundowners and picnic breakfasts out in the wild. You can even opt to head out on a nature walk with one of the Masai warriors to learn about the plants, tracks and animals surrounding the camp.

As with all Porini camps, there’s a communal mess tent with comfy chairs and dining tables where delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners are served by the camp’s friendly, welcoming staff.

You own tent is fully equipped with all the essentials – comfortable beds, a writing desk and chair, wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom with plumbed in toilet and bucket shower. Each tent overlooks a plain where the animals are free to roam. From our tent, we saw bush bucks, zebras, giraffes and impalas go about their days as we relaxed during the afternoon. During the night, you can fall asleep to the sound of hyena chattering and lions roaring in the distance, making it a very authentic place to stay in Kenya!

The Best Amboseli National Park Lodges

Amboseli National Park and its surrounding conservancies make for excellent wildlife viewing. Being so close to Kilimanjaro National Park, safaris are often conducted with the majestic mountain as a backdrop, making for beautiful photos. The National Park is home to all of the big 5, but the park’s huge populations of elephants with huge tusks steal the show here.

Find out the best  safari lodges in Amboseli National Park :

Porini Amboseli Camp

A safari camp with sustainability at its heart,  Porini Amboseli  is easily one of the best safari lodges in Kenya. Guest tents are spacious and comfortable and contain absolutely everything you would need for a few nights in the bush, from beds with crisp linen to a desk and chair, and from a wardrobe to store all your belongings to a fully stocked ensuite bathroom. This is safari glamping at its best.

The rest of the camp is just as impressive. The mess tent contains dining tables, sofas and a swing chair to relax during the day. There’s also a campfire around which you can tell stories of the day’s sightings as the staff bring an unlimited number of drinks from their fully stocked bar. There’s also a little shop selling crafts made by the Masai women from a nearby village, which you’re welcome to visit if you wish.

The food at Porini Amboseli was delicious; I still can’t get over how the camp’s staff managed to cook 2 course breakfasts and buffet lunches as well as 3 course dinners plus snacks every day in the literal middle of nowhere. The quality of the food is a real testament to the camp’s staff, all of whom are exceptional, from the chefs and management to the porters and guides. Everyone made an effort to learn our names and were genuinely interested in our lives. That made it almost impossible to leave!

As with all Porini camps, Porini Amboseli is dedicated to supporting the local community and conservation of the environment. To save water, the camp uses bucket showers, where a limited amount of water is heated over a log fire before being brought to your tent. Furthermore, recycling is a big part of the camp’s ethos. Plastic is virtually non-existent here, with tomato ketchup being served out of glass bottles (it’s a small thing but it counts!) and drinking water given to you in aluminium flasks.

Besides the eco-focus, another of the best parts of this camp is its location. Located in the Selenkay Conservancy bordering Amboseli National Park, you can drive off road without crowds of tourist vehicles in your way, all the while having Mount Kilimanjaro as the backdrop for your photos. You can also stay out after dark and enjoy sundowners in the camp, which is impossible to do within the National Park itself.

We had some of the best game drives out of the whole Kenya trip here thanks to the dedication of the staff and their expert knowledge of the animals. Nature walks are also possible thanks to the guides who know how to track animals and explain the plants and Masai culture as you walk through the conservancy around the camp.

The Best Safari Lodges in Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is unique in that it’s the only protected ecosystem in the world so close to a capital city. It’s just 7km away from the centre of Nairobi, but inside the park it feels like you’re worlds away. All of the big 5 apart from elephants are here, and you might be lucky enough to see black rhinos hiding in the forests too.

If you’re visiting other National Parks while in Kenya, Nairobi National Park makes a wonderful introduction to the safari lifestyle or, plugged on to the end of a safari, a good way of easing back into the idea of going home.

Here’s our pick of the  best places to stay in Nairobi National Park :

Nairobi Tented Camp

Nairobi Tented Camp  was the first accommodation of any kind to be allowed in Nairobi National Park. But its monopoly on accommodation didn’t mean it skimped on quality. Far from it! The camp has just 9 guest tents, kitted out with stylish furniture, comfortable beds and en-suite bathrooms too.

The communal areas of the camp are made up of a dining room, where breakfast, lunch and dinner is served, as well as a lounge area with sofas, books and board games. While the National Park rules mean that you’re not allowed sundowners within the park itself, Nairobi Tented Camp has an open bushfire area where you can sit after the final game drive of the day to enjoy a glass of wine and some snacks before dinner.

Staff at the camp are incredibly helpful and friendly, and the guides are among the best in the business. We were lucky enough to be guided by Gordon, who trained in South Africa and guided in the Masai Mara, but has now settled in Nairobi to be closer to home. He took us on morning and afternoon game drives of the park, and gave us incredible insights into the animals we found on our drives. Though we weren’t lucky enough to spot the elusive leopard, we did get some wonderful sightings of lions, white rhinos and even a serval cat in the park.

Being so close to the capital, there’s a real mix of guests: everything from couples of their honeymoon and families with tiny babies, to businessmen on breaks away from international business meetings. There really is something for everyone here!

Ololo Safari Lodge

Ololo Safari Lodge  is in an enviable position on the southern border of Nairobi National Park, along the banks of Mbagathi River. The lodge itself is set on a working farm that provides the kitchen with the freshest ingredients for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Any waste is either fed to the resident chickens or turned into compost, as part of the lodge’s key focus on sustainability.

As well as the composting system, Ololo makes use of sustainable farming practices and recycling programmes. The lodge also filters water from its own bore hole, which is then filtered for guests to drink and shared with the local community.

The lodge serves restaurant-quality meals on tables overlooking the park, and guests can also enjoy the facilities of the main lounge with its comfy furniture, a fireplace, library and wine cellar. Outside, there’s a fire pit for evening drinks, sun loungers around an outdoor swimming pool, and even massage tables for the ultimate in relaxation.

Guests can choose between rooms set in converted stables and thatched cottage tents (with both stone and canvas walls!) as well as more traditional hotel rooms inside the main farmhouse. Each one offers a unique experience; some have fireplaces, while some have roll-top baths and others, rooftop terraces. They are all light and airy, and decked out beautifully with furniture handcrafted by the lodge’s resident carpenters.

So there you have it – 9 of the best safari lodges in Kenya. But really, no matter where you choose to stay in Kenya on safari, you’re certain to have an incredible time. So go… make that dream come true.

Hospitality at its best

We were a group of three traveling to Masai Mara, and we're now finishing our trip in Zanzibar. The Fairmont's infrastructure and hospitality are unmatched. You truly provide a home away from home for any guest who arrives at your hotel. Jacinta at your hotel is a gem, and the food was of world-class quality. Keep up the excellent work! In the meantime we were disappointed with our visit to the animal rehabilitation center due to the way both staff members and guests treated the animals. One elderly staff member approached a 100-year-old tortoise, which was sleeping, and manipulated its genital area with his foot to wake it up. We found this to be an act of animal cruelty. Additionally, guests were given bowls of food to feed the animals just for photo opportunities. To discourage such acts, there should be clear guidelines, including maintaining a respectful distance and possibly charging for these interactions. At the restaurant, we were shocked by the behavior of certain clients who were extremely rude to the restaurant manager. One client shouted at and humiliated the manager in the middle of dinner service, disrupting the peaceful atmosphere for other diners. Management should pay more attention to incidents like these to maintain a pleasant environment for all guests.

Beautiful but shame it’s a chain now….

I wanted to treat my family to a night of their lives before we went home to UK after 2 weeks away. We’d spent the rest of the break on a budget. I stayed at the Fairmont 15 years ago and my expectations were high and sadly not met. Food and staff amazing!!! Do not doubt that. Wrong accommodation issued initially which was resolved. However, my budget was such that my sister stayed on the sofa bed in the living room but was woken when her hot water bottle leaked all over her and the bed. THANKFULLY not when it was boiling. So a stay that was supposed to be memorable was for the wrong reasons for her. Manager had his hands tied (his words) in terms of reimbursing anything and offered us a horse riding experience instead. My parents are both in their 70s and use sticks to walk, on top of that, we were tight for time to get home. We settled on the wine from evening meal being removed but we left dissatisfied and frustrated that the night I had wanted to treat my family to was marred by this. I would like to reiterate the staff and location were amazing but now it’s a chain it’s about making and keeping money.

My favorite place in the world.

You cannot demonstrate coriolis in a bowl of water, especially when your hotel is over two miles from the equator. I have stayed in some of the best hotels in the world and some not so good. No hotel has ever charged for the delivery of ice to the room except the MKSC. Outrageous! We have stayed here four times in ten years and the plumbing has always been awful. Taking a shower without getting scalded or frozen is a challenge. The food in the grill is really good.

Lovely resort, room far down hill.

Resort is beautiful. Golf cart was helpful some for lifts up and down the hill to our assigned room. Enjoyed fireplace, but fire started early, so out before return from dinner. Overall restful visit during a very active safari. Enjoyed golfcart tour of property, and visit to animal orphanage.

Set in the heart of the great northern territory, amidst the sprawling arid landscape, mottled with lava stones and desert flora & fauna, pours in this beautifully crafted creation that exceeds the term “safari-chic”. A Camp ever so passionately designed; an oasis carefully built by amalgamating rock & canvas, imbibing both Safari & Swahili senses.

The 16 Tents each with individual plunge pools are carefully positioned on a brow with breathtaking views of the undulating Ewaso and Isiolo River confluence at its foot and in the backdrop, the ever-present Ololokwe and sister hills that complete a heavenly vista.

This Kenya Safari Camp Was Voted the Best Hotel in the World – Here's What It's Really Like

Mahali Mzuri means "beautiful place" in Swahili, but here, the beauty goes beyond the landscape.

kenya safari lodges hotel

After our first evening game drive, we settled in at Mahali Mzuri's help-yourself bar. Another guest was making a batch of cocktails to share, and everyone was discussing their animal sightings of the day. "Did you see the cheetah with two cubs?" "No! We only saw a single cheetah. We'll have to look for those."

Shortly after, the general manager and a few other staffers joined us. They told us about life in Kenya and their most memorable animal encounters, some of which happened right on property. It was one guest's birthday, so we all raised our glasses for a toast before heading to dinner, where we pushed our tables together and ate family style.

Mahali Mzuri means "beautiful place" in Swahili, but here, the beauty goes beyond the landscape — it's even more palpable in the people.

The property, part of Richard Branson's Virgin Limited Edition, was named not only the best safari lodge in Africa but the best hotel in the world by Travel + Leisure readers in the 2021 World's Best Awards. Readers credited the picturesque view of the Kenyan bush and the luxurious tented suites, but for me, the hospitality was what made my stay truly unforgettable. Although, being able to spot elephants, hippos, and the occasional lion from my balcony certainly didn't hurt.

An 'Abundance of Wildlife'

When talking to other guests, I heard one remark over and over: "I just can't believe the abundance of wildlife." It's true, in the private Olare Motorogi Conservancy, you don't go searching for animals — the animals come to you. Within a three-minute drive from camp, you might see a herd of elephants, troop of baboons, or dazzle (yes, dazzle) of zebras.

The best part: You usually get the animals all to yourself. There's no need for multiple safari trucks to crowd around at every sighting, as can happen at other safari camps. The majority of the time, it's just you, your guide, and the animals.

That's another standout element of Mahali Mzuri: the guides. Our guide, Jackson, from a local Maasai village, grew up around the animals and seemed to know everything about them. He also knew everything about local life, making him a true expert of the Maasai Mara ecosystem.

Learning About the Local Community

Spending time with members of the Maasai community, both on and off property, was one of the most noteworthy parts of my stay. Jackson took us to visit a local village, and later, a school. We had the opportunity to join in a traditional song and dance, learn how to make fire using dried elephant dung, and, at the school, play some of the children's favorite games.

More importantly, we were able to ask about the biggest challenges facing the community and the school's most pressing needs. Like many guests, we left these experiences wanting to help, and the camp guided us through the most effective ways to do so.

World-class Dining in the Middle of the Bush

On that first night, when us and our fellow guests decided to eat family style, the chef asked us how we felt about forgetting the menu and instead having all traditional Kenyan dishes. There was no hesitation; everyone loved the idea.

We had ugali, a stiff maize flour porridge; sukuma wiki, or sautéed collard greens; pilau, a rice dish; and so much more. The chef talked us through each dish and later answered our questions about Kenyan cuisine, specifically how to make ugali, which was easily the group favorite.

Other evenings, we had things like fresh greens from the on-site garden, grilled fish and chicken, and fluffy cakes and pastries — dishes you might find in an upscale restaurant — but that first night holds a special place in my memory.

Next-level Glamping

Cozying into bed after dinner was one of my favorite parts of each day at Mahali Mzuri. It might sound routine, but the camp found a way to make even the simplest of moments special.

That first night, when I crawled under the covers, I jumped — there was something warm at the foot of the bed. For a second, I thought it might be an animal, but it was actually a hot water bottle, placed under the covers to keep my feet warm. It was a small detail, but it was one I came to look forward to every night. I've even continued the tradition since returning home.

My partner calls those details "one-percenters," and our tent (if you can really call it a tent) was full of them: binoculars to spot animals from the balcony, a clawfoot soaking tub overlooking the valley, furnishings made by the local Maasai people. Plus, there are just 12 tents on property, making for a very secluded and exclusive feel. At times, it felt like it was just us, the staff, and, of course, the resident animals.

Mahali Mzuri embodies its name in a number of ways, but it taught me that by prioritizing community and making the little things count, anywhere can be a beautiful place.

Hotel Amenities

Health & wellbeing, shipwreck lodge, namibia, best for: desert discovery.

Shipwreck Lodge is a unique safari stay on the Skeleton Coast

For a stay on Namibia’s Skeleton Coast, Shipwreck Lodge features wooden rooms that mirror stranded ships. Even in the desolate environment, hardy elephants, lions and brown hyenas wander near the eco ‘wreck’ of 10 cosy cabins and sandboarding, quad biking and beach lunches are all on the itinerary.

Puku Ridge, Zambia

Best for: leopard lovers.

The South Luangwa National Park is primed for walking safaris

If it's leopards you’re trying to spot, Puku Ridge could be your perfect stay – it sits in the South Luangwa National Park, otherwise known as ‘Valley of the Leopards’. Local art blends with classic safari-style furnishings – of course, khaki and beige – in the Zambian lodge’s eight tents with plunge pools and a communal campfire overlooking the plains and lively local watering hole.

Wilderness Jao, Botswana

Best for: bush interiors.

Recycled steel, wood and glass built the Botswana safari lodging

Botswana’s Wilderness Jao has unrivalled game-viewing on land and water in the Okavango Delta. Here, antelope meet zebra, and hippos swim shallow lagoons. Inside, recycled wood and glass designs bring the wild to the five safari suites, the library and the museum, and there’s even a star bed experience to get some shut-eye under the African sky after a mokoro canoe ride.

Mara Plains Camp, Kenya

Best for: wildlife photographers.

Stay at Mara Plains to snap the best big cat shot

In the Olare Motorogi Conservancy on the boundary of the Maasai Mara , Mara Plains’ safari suites ooze old-world opulence with rich accents, canopied ceilings and copper bathtubs. Budding photographers will find a professional camera and a selection of lenses for shooting images of wildlife – particularly hippos and leopards – and you won’t have to go far before a big cat poses on your path.

Cherero Camp, Tanzania

Best for: the great wildebeest migration.

The wildebeest migrate from the Serengeti into the Masai Mara to follow the rainfall

Forget the king of the jungle, Tanzania is often hailed as the king of the safari – with the Serengeti the stage for the annual Great Wildebeest Migrations to and from the Masai Mara. At Cherero Camp, six tented suites champion a slow safari experience with tipples on their private verandas. Think guided walks, golden hour drives and campfire stories deep in the Musabi Plains.

SUJÁN Sher Bagh, India

Best for: trekking with tigers.

The Ranthambore National Park is a haven for Bengal tigers

Away from Africa, Ranthambore in India is a haven for wild tigers. Here, game drives travel the ancient forest past ruins and palaces in search of the ultimate big cat. Better still, SUJÁN Sher Bagh’s 12 tented jungle suites have private verandahs to search the surrounding canopy for the swish of an orange tail while waiting to feast on an Indian farm-to-table dinner cooked in a clay oven.

Tembo Plains Camp, Zimbabwe

Best: conservation camp.

The canvas and stone wall design is a nod to the Zimbabwe Ruins

On the Zambezi River, the Tembo Camp – or elephant camp in Swahili – sits within 128,000 hectares of wildlife conservation land. Aside from the show-stealing trunked giants, you’ll find painted dogs, lions and leopards paddling the waters of the Zambezi, and guests can spend afternoons playing games of cricket on the river’s banks before cosying up in one of four spacious double suites.

How to have a once-in-a-lifetime African safari on a (relative) budget

A n African safari is an experience like no other, so the planning and preparation is essential as it’s an adventure that most travellers will experience once, maybe twice, in their lives. A minority, bitten by the Africa bug, will keep going back. The point of a safari is to immerse oneself in a timeless landscape and watch nature unfold before your eyes at its own pace. So, what you need is a reliable, experienced operator to deliver you to the right part of the sprawling wilderness and, if you have a limited budget, to choose carefully the time and place of your safari.

Good safaris are never cheap – and they can be astronomically expensive. For example, Zarafa, a Relais & Chateaux camp in Botswana’s Linyanti wilderness, can set you back up to $5,000 (£4,000) per person per night in peak season, as indeed can the equally extravagantly designed Mombo Camp, a little further south in the country’s Okavango Delta. And that is without international flights, park fees or local transfers being included in the price. So, a six-day safari staying at these camps could cost around £30,000. For this you will enjoy premium wines served in crystal glassware, eat cordon bleu meals, be waited on by white gloved staff and wallow in gigantic, ornately furnished accommodations fit for a Wall Street banker. And it is bankers, masters of the universe and European royals who one finds at these places.

For the rest of us, it’s about picking the right time of year – shoulder season rather than peak season – and choosing the best among the more affordable and modestly appointed camps. You’ll still have an unforgettable experience – after all, if your purpose is to spend as much time as possible out in the bush watching and photographing wildlife, you don’t need high-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets and first-growth clarets with your dinner.

Here is my guide to the cost-conscious safaris in classic African destinations that will stir the soul without breaking the bank.

Kenya’s peak safari season is June to October when there is less rain and it’s not too hot. There are two rainy seasons in this equatorial country – the heaviest rains (called masika ) usually fall from mid-March to May/June and the shorter rains ( vuli ) occur in November and December. So, late May and early November are shoulder seasons and although these days there are no climate guarantees you should be fine, and it is certainly a most cost-effective time to visit Kenya.

Where to go

The most expensive and over-subscribed tourism event in the Mara is the Great Migration, where an estimated million and a half wildebeests and attendant predators move into the Mara in great waves from Tanzania’s Serengeti. It usually takes place between July and October, although wild animals do not adhere to homo sapiens’ timetables. Avoid. It is an over-crowded bun fight.

Also avoid the Maasai Mara National Reserve, where you invariably see tourist buses surrounding lion prides and stay, instead, in one of the private reserves that make up the Mara Conservancies. There are 15 such conservancies running along the northern border of the 1,500 square kilometre Maasai Mara National Reserve and together they take up a similar area (1,400 square kilometres), all of which have charming small lodges that offer a more private game-viewing experience. You will still experience the wildebeest herds and big cats, but these private reserves have a restriction on vehicle numbers around big cats (5), don’t let in self-drivers/buses, and allow you to head out on day and night drives, guided walks, and fly camp.

Offbeat Mara , for example, is a camp in the 74,000-acre Mara North Conservancy. It is small (five double tents and two family tents) and is set in a game-rich area far from any other lodge or camp. The Ultimate Travel Company (0203 603 5998) offers a six-night safari at Offbeat Mara (plus a night on arrival in Kenya at the Tamarind Tree Hotel in Nairobi) from £5,030 per person, including all flights, accommodation and transfers.

Another fantastic option in the Mara North conservancies is Saruni Wild . It is one of the smallest camps in the area, with three spacious tented suites ideally suited to families of four. A special feature is Saruni’s Warriors Academy, an interactive safari which encourages youngsters to learn Maasai survival skills such as how to track wild animals, use a bow and arrow and build bush camps. Expert Africa (0203 405 6666) offers a six-night safari at Saruni Wild in November for £2,580 per person, including conservancy fees, safari activities, meals and drinks. It includes flights between Nairobi and Mara North but international flights from the UK – starting at around £500 return – need to be added.

Although the Maasai Mara is the most popular of the Kenyan safari destinations, there are many more areas that offer great game-viewing and safari experiences. For example, neighbouring Amboseli and Laikipia in the north.

Like the Maasai Mara, Amboseli National Park spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border that is famous for its elephant population and is home to around 400 species of birds, including pelicans, kingfishers, hamerkops and 47 types of raptor. It is a photographer’s dream not the least because Mount Kilimanjaro is the constant backdrop.

Elewana Tortilis Camp is named after the flat-topped umbrella thorn tree that dominates the ecosystem. This is a 17-tent camp in a private conservancy bordering the park that offers game drives, walks, sundowners and bush meals both in the park and the conservancy. The Ultimate Travel Company (0203 603 5998) offers a six-night stay at Tortilis Camp for £5,015 per person, including international flights, all park fees and an overnight stay in Nairobi’s Tamarind Tree Hotel.

Further north, Ol Pejeta is a not-for-profit conservancy in central Kenya’s Laikipia County, between the foothills of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya. Abercrombie & Kent (0330 1734 712) offers six nights at Sanctuary Tambarare in Ol Pejeta, including international flights, transfers, conservancy fees and all game activities, for £4,418 per person.

Tanzania boasts a vast wilderness but does not have the sophistication of Kenya, its East African neighbour, as a luxury safari destination. It does, however, have a similar seasonality, with the best shoulder seasons being late May and early November.

Where to go

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a wild area based around the famous crater of the same name, a massive volcanic caldera that includes the famous Olduvai Gorge, one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world, in its greater ecosystem.

Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp is set on the rim of the crater which is home to a huge variety of animals including lion, jackal, cheetah, wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, hippo, elephant, and the elusive leopard. The camp has ten luxury safari tents. Each offers an en-suite bathroom with an indoor bucket shower. The main areas of the camp include a dining tent, lounge and bar with comfortable leather sofas, creating the perfect place to sit and relax with your favourite drink while soaking up the spectacular views. Abercrombie & Kent (0330 1734 712) offers a six-night safari that includes one night in Arusha, the gateway to Tanzania’s safari camps, two nights at Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp and three nights at Sanctuary Kichakani, an intimate mobile camp with 10 en-suite tents that’s based in the central Serengeti in June and July, the northern Serengeti from the end of July to November and the southern Serengeti from December to March. It costs £6,995 per person, including all flights, transfers, meals, drinks, park fees and safari activities.

Tarangire National Park is the sixth largest park in the country and is home to large herds of elephant and buffalo and a high concentration of big cats as well as wild dogs, kudu, oryx and gerenuks, as well as 550 bird species, many attracted to the park’s swamps. Oliver’s Camp is in the remote south-eastern section of the park, close to the game rich Silale Swamps. In April and May, at the end of the annual rains, the landscape is lush and dotted with wildflowers. From August until October, herds of antelope and zebras pass through Tarangire. At this time, the park has the highest concentration of mammals in the country. This 10-tent camp offers extreme comfort and terrific game drives day and night. The Ultimate Travel Company (02036 035 998) has a six-night package with three nights at Oliver’s and three nights at Ubuntu Migration Camp, an eight-tent mobile camp that moves according to the season and the location of the animals. The price is from £6,135, including all flights, transfers and safari activities.

Ruaha National Park is, at 20,000 square kilometres, the largest protected area in East Africa. Ikuku Safari Camp sits in a prime position on the park’s escarpment and every lodge looks out over the plains below, a 20-minute 4x4 drive away. There are seven open-sided rooms, with large balconies and high thatched roofs to accommodate the breezes. Guided walks, 4x4 drives, bird-watching trails and hot-air balloon rides are on offer. Expert Africa (0203 405 6666) offer six nights full board at Ikuka Safari Camp in November for £3,437 per person, including internal flights and shared game drives. International flights from the UK and Dar es Salaam cost extra (around £800 return).

South Africa

Southern Africa’s peak season is June through to early September, when the bush is dry and sparse, and the animals are more dependent on major water holes and thus easier to find. So aim for the shoulder season: May into early June and late September and October.

Inyati Game Lodge is located in the Western sector of the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve and like Nottens Bush Camp (see below) shares a common unfenced boundary with Kruger National Park, the country’s prime wildlife reserve. They have dense concentrations of wildlife, including elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo, cheetah and giraffe, as well as a wide range of bird species. Inyati has 11 chalets as well as a library, filtered swimming pool, air-conditioned gym and walk-in wine cellar. Yellow Zebra Safaris (0208 547 2305 ) is offering a six-night full-board safari at Inyati Game Lodge for £3,990 per person including all transfers and game drives, but not international flights.

The Timbavati Private Nature Reserve is located at the border between Hoedspruit and Acornhoek, north of the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve on the western edge of Kruger National Park. Walkers Plains Camp has eight rooms(with private decks and plunge pool in the middle of Timbavati and with great views of the plains and the Drakensberg mountains in the distance. Lion, buffalo, rhino and elephant are in abundance. A little further south, in the Sabi Sands reserve, is Nottens Bush Camp, a 16-bed, family-run lodge with a 20-metre pool. Each suite leads onto a private wooden deck with a view of the bushveld. The Ultimate Travel Company (0203 603 5998) is offering an all-inclusive safari featuring three nights at Walkers Plains and three nights at Notten’s Bush Camp from £4,945 per person including flights from London.

Botswana’s peak season is also winter, so aim for April, May, early June or October for lower rates and generally good weather. Even more savings can be found in “green season” – January to March – when spotting wildlife is a little trickier due to the lush foliage.

In northern Botswana and fed by floodwaters from neighbouring Angola, the Okavango Delta is an inland delta and one of the most beautiful and wildlife-rich areas in Africa. Mma Dinare (meaning Mother Buffalo in the Setswana language) has nine tents set among the knobthorn and leadwood trees adjacent to Moremi Game Reserve. From the camp you can take game drives, guided walks and mokoro boat rides when the water is high. Not only is the area game rich but there is abundant bird life here, such as fish eagles, slaty egrets, pygmy geese, southern carmine bee-eaters. Expert Africa (0203 405 6666) offers a six-night package for travel between November 15 and March 31 (excluding the Christmas season) for £2,376 per person, excluding international flights (a return from UK to Maun, Botswana’s tourism capital, costs about £1,100).

Little Sable, in the Khwai Private Reserve, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park, and with eight tents on raised decks overlooking the plains, is one of the best-value camps in the Delta. This vast reserve is shared by only a handful of camps, all owned by the same operator, Natural Selection, so the safari experience remains exclusive. Giraffe and antelope (kudu, lechwe, sable) are abundant; you’ll also see elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard and wild dogs. Natural Selection (0027 2100 11547) has an all-inclusive, six-night safari with four nights at Little Sable and two nights at Hyena Pan, another eight-tent camp in the Khwai reserve, set in a grove of cathedral mopane trees overlooking a vast pan and with underground wildlife-viewing hides next to the water – a massive plus for photographers. For travel in April and November 2024, this six-night safari costs £4,220 per person, not including international flights.

In the far north of the country is another major game-rich area: Chobe National Park, host to the largest elephant population in Africa, numbering at least 120,000. It is also known for massive herds of Cape buffalo, while lion, antelope and hippo inhabit the woods and lagoons around Linyanti Marsh. The Ultimate Travel Company (0203 6035 998) has a six-night package including three nights at Muchenje Safari Lodge and three nights aboard the Zambezi Queen, a luxury houseboat that cruises along the Chobe River, offering a unique game-viewing experience. The lodge, in the quieter western side of the park and with river views, has 11 thatched cottages. The Zambezi Queen has 14 luxury suites. The cost is from £5,240 per person, including all flights, transfers and safari activities.

Another southern African country with peak season in the dry, cool winter months – June through September – so again shoulder seasons are cost effective, with April and May particularly recommended. Because of its well-publicised political problems Zimbabwe has somewhat fallen out of favour with British safari travellers. However, it is, for all its problems, a remarkably peaceful country, far more so than its southern neighbour South Africa.

Hwange National Park in the northwest is rich with game and has one of the largest elephant populations in Africa. Bumbusi Wilderness Camp is located in the Sinamatella area of the park and unlike the drier sandveld-based Hwange camps is set among evergreen trees and perennial springs. This habitat makes it attractive for predators such as lions and also for significant herds of elephant. Prices start at £395 per person per night, and Natural Selection (0027 21 001 1547) offers a five-day package for £2,675 per person  based on two sharing, or £1,970 per person based on four sharing, in April, May, November and December, including transfers but not international flights.

Elsewhere in Hwange, The Hide is a popular lodge overlooking a busy waterhole and with ten tents, each with their own private veranda. Expert Africa (0203 405 6666) offers a six-night, all-inclusive safari at The Hide for £2,600 per person, not including flights from the UK to Victoria Falls (expect to pay around £800 return).

Finally, Mana Pools National Park is located in the far north of the country, along the mighty Zambezi River. There are large populations of elephant, hippo, Nile crocodile and lion, and it is a great area for birders. Kavinga Safari Camp , beside the Ruckomechi River, has seven tents raised above the Zambezi Valley floor, while the Mana River Camp , another intimate operation with six tents, is right on the banks of the river. The Ultimate Travel Company (0203 6035 998) is offering a six-night package with three nights at Kavinga and three nights at Mana River Camp, from £5,085 per person, including international flights.
