Eddie Vedder Reveals Dates for Brief 2022 Solo Tour

Eddie Vedder will be seeing quite a bit of the road in 2022. There's still the matter of a major Pearl Jam tour in support of their Gigaton album that is currently being rescheduled for May, but Vedder has also scheduled a brief early year solo run in support of his upcoming Earthling solo album.

The singer will hit the road in February, playing eight shows primarily on the East and West Coast (if you're in the Midwest, Chicago is your best bet). For this run, Vedder has pulled in Pearl Jam touring guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Jane's Addiction bassist Chris Chaney, producer/guitarist Andrew Watt and guitarist/vocalist Glen Hansard to help him translate the music live. Hansard will also serve as the opening act on the dates.

The trek launches Feb. 3 in New York City, wrapping just a few weeks later on Feb. 22 in Vedder's hometown of Seattle.

Pearl Jam Ten Club members will be eligible for the pre-sale held through Vedder's Ticketmaster Request page. Learn more about that here. Meanwhile, the public on sale will be available through Ticketmaster's Verified Fan Registration through Dec. 5 at 5PM PT. You can register here .

As stated, Vedder is promoting his new solo album Earthling that's set to arrive on Feb. 11 through Seattle Surf / Republic Records. Watt served as producer on the upcoming set. The album is available for pre-order here .

Scott’s Stapp’s Response to Being Called an ‘Eddie Vedder Rip-Off’

Eddie Vedder announces February 2022 US tour with backing band The Earthlings, featuring Andrew Watt, Josh Klinghoffer, Chris Chaney and Chad Smith

The star-studded lineup will commence the trek in New York, and wrap up with two back-to-back shows in Seattle

Eddie Vedder

Eddie Vedder has announced an eight-date US tour in February 2022 in support of his upcoming solo album, Earthling , and will be joined by a star-studded backing band.

Aptly named the Earthlings, Vedder's band for the trek includes Ozzy Osbourne producer Andrew Watt on guitar, The Frames' Glen Hansard on guitar and vocals, Jane's Addiction's Chris Chaney on bass guitar , Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, and ex-RHCP guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who will also handle backing vocal and keyboard duties.

This won't be the first time Klinghoffer has performed with Eddie Vedder, as earlier this year, after officially joining Pearl Jam as a touring musician , the guitarist joined the band for their set at the Sea.Hear.Now festival in New Jersey's Asbury Park on September 18.

Kicking off February 3 at the Beacon Theater in New York, the tour will make stops Newark, NJ, Chicago, IL, and Los Angeles, CA, before wrapping up with back-to-back shows on February 21 and 22 at the Benaroya Hall in Seattle, WA.

Eddie Vedder's new album Earthling arrives February 11 via Seattle Surf/Republic Records. While the Pearl Jam leader released his first album Into the Wild – a collection of songs for the Sean Penn movie of the same name – in 2007, Earthling is his second solo album not linked to a film soundtrack, after 2011's Ukulele Songs .

Two singles have been released from the record, a beautiful acoustic ballad titled The Haves , and the more upbeat Long Way , which features Josh Klinghoffer and Chad Smith, as well as The Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench on the Hammond organ.

There will be no general sale of tickets for the Earthlings Tour, and public tickets will only be available through Ticketmaster Verified Fan Registration , which is open now through December 5.

Eddie Vedder

Last month, Eddie Vedder released a new project on Amazon Audible, entitled I Am Mine , which reflects on his life and achievements with Pearl Jam.

The audiobook sees Vedder recount the tragic events of June 30, 2000, when a crowd surge during Pearl Jam's set at the Roskilde Festival resulted in the deaths of nine fans.

“There was at least one person in the band, I remember, that thought maybe we should never play again,” he reflects.

“We all had to process something that we all went through as individuals, but also with the help of each other. Although I kind of disappeared into Europe – [I] had my own way of getting through it, which was taking Spanish guitar lessons from people who didn't speak English.

“That was just a way to focus and be around people that I couldn’t understand for the most part. And that way I was able to be around people, but since I didn’t really know what they were saying, it felt very peaceful and calm.”

Eddie Vedder Announces 2022 Tour Dates to Support New Solo Album

Jacob Uitti

Updated:

2022 is shaping up to be the year of Eddie Vedder.

Videos by American Songwriter

The Pearl Jam frontman is set to embark on a new tour next year to support his forthcoming solo album Earthling .

The tour begins February 3 in New York City where the legendary frontman will be backed by his band, The Earthlings. The tour ends in his hometown of Seattle.

Vedder’s band is a cast of all-stars, including Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Pearl Jam touring band member Josh Klinghoffer, NHC and Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney, and vocalist Glen Hansard, who will also open for Vedder on some of the stops. Guitarist Andrew Watt is also one of The Earthlings.

The 56-year-old Vedder’s new album, Earthling , touches down officially on February 11. Earlier this year, the vocalist released the album’s debut single , “The Haves,” which you can check out below.

The new LP is his first true solo work since his 2011 record, Ukulele Songs . Last year, Vedder released the original soundtrack to Flag Day .

Earlier this year, Vedder also released a new Audible Project, in which he got candid about a number of his life experiences, including his early struggles dealing with fame.

He said: “It did get a little funny, you know, where you couldn’t go to 7-Eleven and get coffee without… it would get crazy. It was like f*cking One Direction or something. It was bizarre. The problem with fame or whatever, and it really is kind of a ridiculous conversation, I mean, it’s real. But you know, to be honest with you, if you can’t handle it, what the f*ck are we doing there in the first place? The thing is, we just didn’t expect it. And I remember after the second record, I got really bad, I just wouldn’t leave the house.

“But there was this malaise. I had this cool house in Seattle, like an old ‘70s Northwest architecture house on an end of a street. And I never thought I’d have a house before and I had a basement and that’s kind of where I spent all my time. And then I started smoking cigarettes and then I’d start spray painting words on the wall, like a hallway would just say ‘happenstance’ and then I’d make sculptures out of duct tape on another wall and I would just never leave.

“I had a pinball machine. I would just stay in the laundry room and play pinball. I wouldn’t see people, I would never go out and I was by myself a lot. But I had typewriters and this little, Italian dentist I got the house from, he put in a little wine room. So I’d sit in this tiny, cozy, little wine room, dark, with a candle and cigarette and a bunch of wine just by myself. It was a weird time. But just never, never going out, that was the way I handled it and I’m probably reclusive by nature and all those years of midnight shifts and all that, I was always awake by myself, no one up, no energy around. I was kind of used to it. It’s like COVID now, you know? You get so used to not going out, it’s like, you may never go out again.”

Eddie Vedder delivers old-time alt-rock with newfound fervor and Earthlings

The veteran pearl jam frontman is out on solo road trek ahead of the release of a new album later this week..

Eddie Vedder performs at the Auditorium Theatre on Wednesday night in the first of two dates at the Chicago venue.

Eddie Vedder performs at the Auditorium Theatre on Wednesday night in the first of two dates at the Chicago venue.

Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times

In the 30-plus years that Eddie Vedder has been a part of the rock music pantheon, he’s played a full cast of characters on stage. There’s been the unhinged banshee that made early Lollapalooza appearances look like stunt double tryouts; the eager Cubs fan who got to live out his field of dreams headlining Wrigley Field; and the emotional wild card that flipped the script on “MTV Unplugged.” Yet, on Wednesday night at the Auditorium Theatre — the first of two nights in a short run of solo shows — Vedder was simply a singer-songwriter in his element.

The rare appearance sans the members of Pearl Jam, served as a sounding board for Vedder’s latest solo material, before his new record “Earthling” hits streets on Friday. Though the wide-spanning performance on this night was bookended by a curated assortment of covers, Vedder devoted the meaty midsection to previewing nine of the 13 new tracks that show his ever-growing range.

Standouts included the album’s lead-off track “Invincible” with its cosmic lo-fi sheen, the winding Americana ballad “Long Way,” and the fast-paced surf rock number “Try” (with Stevie Wonder supplying harmonica on the album version). Perhaps the most evocative, though, was the alt rock in memoriam, “Brother The Cloud,” which many have assumed was written about his late Seattle comrade Chris Cornell, though Vedder has yet to confirm it.

For now, the brief tour jaunt only includes six cities. The idea, Vedder said, came out of working in the studio with his supergroup backing band The Earthlings, who made their debut at his Ohana Festival last September and have been a huge asset on the new material. The troupe is comprised of Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith as well as former RHCP guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney, The Frames/Swell Season talent Glen Hansard on guitar and vocals, as well as newcomer guitarist Andrew Watt who, up until now, has been a well-known producer for Top 40 pop stars but will soon earn a reputation as a bonafide shredder.

Eddie Vedder (front) and The Earthlings — Andrew Watt (from left), Josh Klinghoffer and Chad Smith on drums — perform on Wednesday night at the Auditorium Theatre.

“Watching these guys create and perform in the studio together, we had to get it out on the road,” Vedder said at one point. And this night’s show quickly took on that persona, akin to watching the sextet jam together out of their garage. Being a fly on the wall in this setting felt just as special, even though the two-and-a-half-hour set was a bit slow to start, coming out of the gates with four covers that were maybe too much of a prolonged jam session. But when the group got their footing, they showed true chemistry.

Such was the case with “I’ll Be Waiting,” the song that Vedder and Hansard contributed to the soundtrack of “Flag Day,” which begs for the pair to do more duets. Even when The Earthlings took on Pearl Jam numbers like “Not For You” and “Porch,” they delivered them with the same bombast that fans have come to expect from Vedder’s other brothers in arms. It’s not an easy task, considering the rabid fandom for the purity of the ‘90s mainstays. Yet, while the outliers might naturally be drawn to make comparisons — the age-old dilemma for well-known frontmen that go solo — the thing is, if you’re someone like Eddie Vedder, you don’t just help define a generation and go softly into the night. You keep evolving, keep creating and keep hoping people come back for more.

And for him, they always do. Especially in Chicago where the Evanston-reared artist fits into our allegiance complex, where people always want to root Vedder on. Especially as he regales with insider stories about the Skokie Swift CTA line and seeing his first concert at the same Auditorium Theatre (Bruce Springsteen in 1977), then calling out Chris Chelios in the crowd and name-checking Ernie Banks during a brief moment of soliloquy.

Opening the show was Hansard, giving every fiber of his being in delivering “Falling Slowly” and “When Your Mind’s Made Up,” from the hit movie and Broadway show, “Once.” Though he was without his Swell Season partner Marketa Irglova, it was a great preview for when they return next month at Cadillac Palace Theater for a special one-off. Not surprisingly, at the conclusion of the five-song set, Hansard received a well-earned standing ovation.

It was a response that would be repeated again by the night’s conclusion as Vedder and crew did good on their promise to try and “make history” for the young first-timers spotted in the front row, in a show that was anything but “boring.” If only Nikki Sixx had been there to see it.

Eddie Vedder’s ‘Earthling’ Tour Launch Felt Like a Glorious ’90s Alt-Rock Fever Dream

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Just one song into Eddie Vedder ‘s Earthling tour launch at New York’s Beacon Theatre on Thursday night, he paused the festivities to look out at the capacity crowd and soak in the fact that he was finally back on the road after two endless years of waiting. “It’s great to be playing a show, but especially great to be playing show in a theater and especially a show at this particular cathedral so aptly named,” he said. “It feels like a sanctuary tonight, and it does feel like a beacon.”

eddie vedder beacon

It also felt like a sort of glorious Nineties alt-rock fever dream since he opened with a cover of R.E.M.’s 1992 classic “Drive” and his backing band contained Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney, and former Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer. Topping it all off, they were playing in front of two mannequins decked out like women in the Dude’s dream sequence from The Big Lebowski , a movie from the late Nineties about the early Nineties featuring yet another member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea, in a supporting role.

But they weren’t there to hawk Clinton-era memories as if this was Eddie Vedder and His All Starr Band. The longtime friends came together last year to record Vedder’s excellent new solo LP Earthling , and this was their chance to unveil the songs to the public a little over a week before the record arrives. It meant hitting fans with a lot of new material, but the Pearl Jam faithful are adventurous and they seemed to relish the experience just as much as Vedder himself.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, inside sammy davis jr.'s secret satanic past .

eddie vedder glen hansard beacon

Before they delved into Earthling , Vedder and his band (which also featured singer-guitarist Glen Hansard and guitarist Andrew Watt, who produced Earthling ) played a moving rendition of the mournful Tom Petty tune “Room at the Top” followed by the Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun.” This was the final singalong moment before eight consecutive tunes from either Earthling or the recent Flag Day soundtrack. The energy in the house may have sagged a bit during some of the slower numbers, but anthemic tunes like “Long Way” and “Invincible” had fans singing along by their second choruses. And every song was a chance for Klinghoffer to show off his incredible chops, proving why Pearl Jam scooped him up shortly after the Chili Peppers pushed him out to make way for the return of John Frusciante.

If the band felt a little loose at times, even re-starting one of the songs after a shambolic first attempt, it’s because of madness of life during Omicron nearly derailed this entire tour. “I’ve gotta tell you, these past few weeks have been some of the most chaotic that I’ve ever experienced in all my years,” Vedder said midway through the show. “I don’t want to get into it, but people close to me got Covid. And then we had 12 practices scheduled, but only had three of them. Then the day we’re supposed to fly here, there’s a bomb cyclone. The lesson has been, through adversity we have come out the other side actually stronger.”

The familiar opening notes of Pearl Jam’s “Wishlist” were greeted by screams of ecstasy, and the band kept that energy going through the new songs “Brother the Cloud,” “Mrs. Mills,” and “Try,” which featured photographer Danny Clinch on harmonica. The main set ended with a transcendent, jammed-out take on Pearl Jam’s “Porch” that kept the crowd roaring until the band came back for encores.

They started with “Precious” by the Pretenders to add some “female energy” in the mix, and then went back to the Pearl Jam catalog for a tender “Better Man.” It led directly into a snippet of Patti Smith’s “People Have the Power.” The clock was ticking toward the Beacon’s curfew of 11 p.m. by this point, so they raced through George Harrison’s “Isn’t It a Pity” and Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” to avoid overtime charges.

The tour wraps up Feb. 22 after hitting just five more cities. That’s very quick for a rock tour, but it will soon be time for Pearl Jam, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Jane’s Addiction to get back to work headlining festivals and packing football stadiums. It simply wasn’t practical for this mashed-up band to last longer than a few weeks. But let’s hope the end of the tour won’t mark the end of Eddie Vedder and the Earthlings as a live experience. They managed to create something very fresh and exciting with this show, and they should see where they can take it in the future.

Eddie Vedder has spent much of 2024 promoting the latest Pearl Jam album, Dark Matter. He also released a new song, "Save It For Later," which quickly became a hit on a number of Billboard charts in America.

In the middle of his busy year, one of Vedder’s solo albums is also surging in popularity. Across the pond, the rocker sees his full-length Earthling return to three charts at once in the U.K.—and it even manages to return to its all-time peak on one of them.

Earthling is back at No. 13 on the Official Vinyl Albums chart, the U.K.’s ranking of the bestselling titles on vinyl. The set was recently offered on sale in a translucent blue/black wax record, and fans in the country purchased the project in large enough numbers to almost send it into the top 10.

The title debuted at No. 13 on the Official Vinyl Albums tally back in August 2022. It then fell off the list just one frame later, and it seemed like it was gone for good. Now, it’s back in the exact same position in an odd bit of coincidence.

Vedder has never climbed higher than No. 13 on the U.K.’s vinyl chart. Earthling represents his loftiest placement yet, and it’s one of only two efforts from the rocker to reach the ranking.

In May of 2022, Vedder appeared on the Official Vinyl Albums chart for the first time on his own. His project Ukulele Songs debuted and peaked at No. 27. Just months later, he bettered his top placement with Earthling, when it launched at lucky No. 13.

Earthling also manages to reappear on two other tallies in the U.K. It blasts onto the Official Digital Albums ranking at No. 28 this time around. The same project comes in just a few spaces further down on the Official Albums Sales list, where it lands at No. 33.

Eddie Vedder's 'Earthling' Album Climbs To No. 13 In U.K.

eddie vedder solo tour 2022

Eddie Vedder's solo album Earthling has made a remarkable comeback on the U.K.'s Official Vinyl Albums chart, reaching its all-time high position of No. 13. The resurgence of Earthling coincides with Vedder's busy schedule promoting the latest Pearl Jam album, Dark Matter, and the success of his new hit song, 'Save It For Later,' on various Billboard charts in the U.S.

Originally debuting at No. 13 on the Official Vinyl Albums chart in August 2022, Earthling briefly dropped off the list before re-entering at the same spot. This achievement marks Vedder's highest placement on the U.K.'s vinyl chart to date, with only one other album of his having reached the ranking.

Earlier in 2022, Vedder made his first appearance on the Official Vinyl Albums chart with Ukulele Songs, which peaked at No. 27. However, Earthling surpassed this record by debuting at No. 13, showcasing the rocker's growing popularity in the U.K. music scene.

In addition to the Official Vinyl Albums chart, Earthling also reappeared on two other U.K. music tallies. The album secured the No. 28 spot on the Official Digital Albums ranking and landed at No. 33 on the Official Albums Sales list, further solidifying Vedder's presence in the British music market.

The resurgence of Earthling highlights Vedder's enduring appeal as a solo artist and his ability to captivate audiences with his distinctive sound. As fans continue to support his music, Vedder's chart success serves as a testament to his talent and influence in the music industry.
