If one of your vehicles is traveling interstate and isn’t registered under the International Registration Plan (IRP), you’ll need to order a temporary trip permit. 

A trip permit is needed if your vehicle is traveling out of state and any of these apply:

  • Your vehicle isn’t registered under IRP
  • Your vehicle has 3 or more axles
  • Your vehicle has a gross vehicle or registered weight over 26,000 lbs.
  • Your tow vehicle and trailer have a combined gross vehicle or registered weight over 26,000 lbs.

Frequently asked questions, what is the international registration plan (irp).

The International Registration Plan (IRP) is an agreement among the United States, District of Columbia and provinces of Canada that recognizes the registration of commercial motor vehicles registered by other jurisdictions. This allows a qualifying commercial vehicle to travel through several jurisdictions with one license plate.

What information will I need to request my temporary permit?

You’ll need:

  • US DOT and federal ID numbers
  • Legal company name and DBA (if applicable)
  • Billing address (if different)
  • Combined gross registered weight
  • License plate expiration date
  • Caller name and phone number
  • Fax or email to send permit to
  • Unit number
  • Year and make of vehicle
  • Complete VIN
  • License plate number and state
  • Unit type (tractor, straight truck, etc.)
  • States you are ordering permit for
  • Date permit needs to be effective

Do you offer a combo permit for trip & fuel?

Yes. If you require a trip and fuel permit, we will apply for a combo permit when available.

What is a trip permit?

A trip permit grants temporary registration of a commercial or private carrier in a state or province where the carrier is not apportioned (state or province not listed with weight on cab card).   If travel is required to a state and a vehicle does not have IFTA and IRP credentials, trip and fuel permits are required. Trip permits are valid for a defined period of time or for a single trip.

  • The vehicle has 2 axles and exceed 26,000 lbs

Single Trip (Overweight/Oversized) Permit Application

Single trip permit is for companies with a tero id and mha dot decal moving a vehicle that is overweight or oversized., companies without a tero id & only use twice a year will need a single special trip permit ., permits require complete route of travel not just bia roads travelled (be detailed)., permits are one way, must have entry and exit permit, permits must be paid before moving, required information.

  • Company information & TERO ID#
  • Vehicle Information: Plate Number, Vehicle Weight, Complete Vin Number, Make, and Year
  • Trip Information: Load description, BIA Route, Date of Travel
  • Location information: Rig Number or Name of Location

*credit card transitions are subject to a 3.09% fee

*Permits that are applied for after 4:30 p.m. will be processed the next day (except for weekends & holidays)*

  • Permits are required when you are driving on a B.I.A. (Bureau of Indian Affairs) Route.
  • Approved permits are found online when logging into your account.
  • All permits are valid for the requested day only (exception of rig move permits).
  • Trips are defined as traveling from point “A” to “B” and can not be used for more than one trip.

Permits are valid for ONLY day of requested travel.  1/2 hour AFTER sunrise & 1/2 hour BEFORE sunset.

  • Astringent or special circumstances allow the date to change and you must have prior approval from MHA DOT.
  • Permits are not valid on state recognized holidays or during inclement weather.
  • Vehicles that need a permit: Cranes and work over units (rig)
  • Any construction/earth moving vehicles exceeding the following dimensions must obtain a special moving permit: oversize or overweight vehicle (8′ 6″ wide, 14″ height) (105,500 lbs. or above)
  • These permits to do not give you blanket authority to use county roads that have weight restrictions. These are only authorized for B.I.A. (Bureau of Indian Affairs) Routes.
  • Permits need to be obtained before movement occurs. Without a permit, a citation will be given.
  • Permits that are applied for after 4:30 p.m. will be processed the next day (except for weekends)

Citations are issued if the company does not have a TERO Business License, DOT Decal or Special Moving Permit while doing business on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.
