The lake district will not be too busy at this that time of the year and far less people go to Coniston than other parts of the lakes, so you should be okay booking a day or two in advance. I would keep checking every couple of days at the pre-booking to see how many tickets are available on the 22nd. I just checked for the next sailing on the 6th of May and 46 adult tickets are available so you should be okay. Coniston gets very windy and it can rain a lot so be prepared for the weather there.

Unfortunitely the lovely Steam restaurant in Coniston has recently closed as they can't get staff.

I'm not sure, but there is a school holiday in England starting on 25th May and some schools (including some Scottish schools) are off on 24th as well, so I'd do it before that.

TA Forum is one of my top go to's for info heading somewhere new (how do people wing it and do no prior research? admittedly not all are as OCD in that regard as me!) I have lots of tips and info I have jotted down but the crowd situation for that time of year is useful to know. Waddler - we'll be there in the week prior to that weekend as spending the "long weekend" with friends further south so all good.

Can you still hire a motor boat on Coniston? That's fun. Don't forget to go to the Dog's Home (though in some ways it's a shame it's been restored. It used to look *exactly* as described in Picts and the Martyrs)
