Belgium SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Apr 26, 2024 | Belgium , Europe , SIM Cards , Travel Tips

Visiting Belgium soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Belgium SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Belgium in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

That said, if you’re traveling to other countries in Europe, you should be able to use the same SIM card because most SIM card providers also offer coverage in other European countries.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Belgium. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a Uber, or translate Dutch, or French – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Belgium.

Note that your mobile phone provider may already offer Belgian coverage if you’re European. If that’s the case, you won’t need a SIM card for your adventures in Belgium.

Brussels, Belgium

Best SIM Cards In Belgium

If you’re traveling in Belgium, we recommend using a SIM card from Proximus, Orange, Base, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Europe, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other European countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Belgium

You can either buy a Europe prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a European prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Proximus, Orange, and Base.

Bruges, Belgium

Proximus SIM Cards

Proximus offers three different types of plans:

  • Pay&go + prepaid card: Get a SIM card, EUR 10 credit, and 3 GB data for EUR 5 (online offer)
  • Reload 10: 500 MB data for EUR 10
  • Reload 15: 3 GB data for EUR 15
  • Reload 25: 5 GB data for EUR 25

As a visitor, the first option is probably the best, if you can purchase your SIM online.

Orange SIM Cards

Orange Belgium has a prepaid SIM card called a ‘Tempo Card’ available with the following options:

  • 1 GB data, 500 texts, 31 days for EUR 10
  • 5 GB data, 4000 texts, 31 days for EUR 15
  • 8 GB data, 31 days for EUR 15
  • 7 GB data, 5000 texts, 31 days for EUR 20

As you can see, it’s slightly cheaper than Proximus.

Base SIM Cards

Base offers several different prepaid options for customers, including the following:

  • 4 GB data for EUR 15
  • 8 GB data for EUR 25

Overall, we think Proximus is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Belgium Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card works in more than 30 countries and gives you 20BG of data for 14 days. Belgium is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

Browse your options on Amazon

Another option is to purchase a prepaid European SIM card on SimOptions .

They currently offer various data plans in Belgium.

Browse your options on SimOptions

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Europe.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Belgium

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone. If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Belgium.

Curious? Learn more about eSIM for travelers on esimroamers.com .

I started using eSIM as soon as my mobile phone supported it. To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo .

Airalo Belgium

If you want to buy an eSIM for Belgium, you could purchase one on Airalo . This website offers many eSIM cards worldwide and special plans for Europe and Belgium.

I’ve been using Airalo in Europe for several years, and it works fine.

Here are the options available :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $4.50
  • 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $7
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $9
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $12.50
  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $20
  • 20 GB, valid for 30 days for $30

Airalo esim Belgium

Here’s an overview of the options available in Europe :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $5
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $13
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $20
  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $37
  • 50 GB, valid for 90 days for $100
  • 100 GB, valid for 180 days for $185

The options mentioned above are part of Eurolink and offer coverage in 39 countries, including Belgium.

Alternatively, if you’re traveling in other countries that are not mentioned on the list, you can try Discover Global, which offers coverage in 124 countries, including Belgium.

Here’s an overview of the options available on Discover Global :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $9
  • 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $17
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $24
  • 5 GB, valid for 60 days for $35
  • 10 GB, valid for 180 days for $59
  • 20 GB, valid for 365 days for $69

Airalo Discover esim global

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country.

Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip. In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

Go to Airalo

Holafly Belgium

Alternatively, you could look at your options on Holafly . You can read our Holafly review to learn more about this eSIM store.

I’ve also tried this eSIM provider in Europe, and it worked fine.

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Belgium

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Belgium or even an eSIM for your travels in Belgium is pretty easy. You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Europe without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase a European SIM card .

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Belgium if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card. Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Don't waste your precious holiday time in Europe standing in line at the airport or waste an hour waiting for your turn in a local sim card store. No more language barriers. Order a sim card for Europe online before your trip! How?

This is your ultimate guide, read everything you need to know below and get connected instantly.

Traveltomtom's favorite e-sim providers are  Airalo  and  SimOptions . Why? Traveltomtom has personally used Airalo and SimOptions sim cards for more than 5 years and never faced an issue.

All the sim cards listed in this article are European sim cards with data that you can order online before your trip. The international physical prepaid sim cards will be delivered to your home address before your trip and are activated automatically from its first use. E-sim cards for Europe obviously are delivered via email.

Traveltomtom also recommends world sim cards with global coverage. Check out my article with a comparison of the  best international sim cards for travelling in 2024  if you for example continue your trip to Europe to Turkey, Asia or the Middle East.

Sim cards for Europe with unlimited data

Traveltomtom does not recommend sim cards for Europe with unlimited data. With most of these sim cards you will end up frustrated! Always double check at what speed you get unlimited data, because in reality 'unlimited' is mostly not 'unlimited'.

There is pretty much always a FUP (Fair Use Policy) on these Europe sim cards with unlimited data.

For example Holafly sells e-sim cards with unlimited data for Europe, but in the small letters you will find this:  the eSIM includes unlimited data for the contracted time. However, please note that the carrier may reserve the right to apply a Fair Usage Policy.

This literally means that if the operator thinks you are using too much data on a day, they reduce your data speed. Holafly does not specify what the FUP is. From my own experience I can tell you that this already applies sometimes after using 2 GB data per day.

When this happens your data speed is reduced to something like 512 Kbps which means you can barely send a photo through WhatsApp and your social media apps won't work for a full 24 hours.

To avoid all this hassle, Traveltomtom does not recommend sim cards for Europe with unlimited data, unless the Fair Use Policy is clearly mentioned and it is above 100 GB data per month or something similar.

To make it all easy for travelers coming to Europe, just buy your sim card online before your trip! Here are the 12 best European prepaid sim cards and e-sim cards for Europe. The best ones are ranked first...

Great advantage of this Orange tourist sim card for Europe is that it has international calling minutes included. The downside about the Orange Holiday Europe prepaid sim card is that it is valid for only 14 days.

If your trip to Europe is longer than 14 days I recommend you getting a different prepaid or e-sim card for Europe so you don't have to worry about topping up during your holiday.

5. Eurolink eSIM from Airalo

airalo esim card plans for europe 2024

Airalo is a trusted e-sim card provider and offers e-sim cards for pretty much every country in the world. Their Europe e-sim card plans are more expensive than other e-sim cards for Europe.

The Airalo e-sim cards for Europe are partially 5G ready, meaning in some countries you are able to use 5G in some countries you will have to it with 4G/LTE. It is a 50/50 I would say.

5G is available in: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK. All other countries there is only 4G/LTE network available.

Eurolink e-sim cards also have plans for 3 months and even for 6 months, which could be a very interesting e-sim for travelers visiting Europe for more than 1 month.

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $5 USD
  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $13 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $20 USD
  • 10 GB data for 30 days = $37 USD
  • 50 GB data for 90 days = $100 USD

Click here to order this Orange Holiday Zen sim card for Europe as a physical prepaid sim card and click here to order the Orange Holiday Zen as an e-sim card .

11. Holafly

Holafly sells e-sim cards for Europe with unlimited data. Traveltomtom is not a fan of e-sim cards with 'unlimited' data and I explained to you why in the beginning of this article.

  • 1 day 'unlimited' data = $6 USD
  • 2 days 'unlimited' data = $10 USD
  • 3 days 'unlimited' data = $13 USD
  • 4 days 'unlimited' data = $16 USD
  • 5 days 'unlimited' data = $21 USD
  • 6 days 'unlimited' data = $25 USD
  • 7 days 'unlimited' data = $29 USD
  • 8 days 'unlimited' data = $31 USD
  • 9 days 'unlimited' data = $35 USD
  • 10 days 'unlimited' data = $37 USD
  • 11 days 'unlimited' data = $40 USD
  • 14 days 'unlimited' data = $48 USD
  • 20 days 'unlimited' data = $64 USD
  • 30 days 'unlimited' data = $75 USD

The Holafly e-sim cards for Europe are data-only and incoming and outgoing calls/sms are NOT supported. These e-sims do also not come with a phone number. The Holafly e-sims operate on the 4G/LTE network and are not 5G ready.

You can use a hotspot on Holafly Europe e-sim cards of up to 500 MB per day.

The Holafly Europe e-sims are valid in the following 32 countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland, and Ukraine.

Why 'unlimited'? Because there is a Fair Use Policy and Traveltomtom has had bad experiences with this in the past. Suddenly your data speed is slowed down for 24 hours because you apparently used too much data.

If I hate something then it is slow data speed. Therefore Traveltomtom's is not a fan of e-sim cards with 'unlimited' data and I do not want reduced data speed because I apparently hit the FUP (which is not defined).

Therefore the Holafly e-sim cards for Europe are not ranked that high in this list of the best sim cards for traveling to Europe in 2024.

Of course you can also order sim cards for traveling to Europe on Amazon. When searching for 'Sim Card for Europe' on Amazon you will get a long list of available physical prepaid sim cards. There are no e-sim cards available on Amazon.

Here are some examples:

  • Orange: 16 GB data (not in UK, Switzerland) + 800 minutes for 28 day = $28 USD + tax
  • Three: 10 GB data + unlimited calls/sms for 30 days = $19 USD + tax
  • Sim2Roam: 3 GB data for 30 days = $16 USD + tax
  • Vodafone: 12 GB data for 14 days = $17 USD + tax

Listed as a last option because it is a jungle finding the best sim card for Europe on Amazon. Plus delivery fees and taxes making it sometimes really expensive.

Free EU data roaming on European sim cards

The European Union came in 2017 finally with the genius idea to let go of roaming charges within the EU countries. Therefore in 2017 people can use their sim card from Spain in Italy and their Germany sim card in Sweden without any extra charges. For people looking for a sim card for Europe travel this was the best news ever of course.

Therefore upon arrival in Europe you can potentially buy a local prepaid sim card for tourists and be connected to the internet in all other countries you visit in Europe. However, there are a lot of exceptions, so keep reading…

The biggest exceptions are: UK, Switzerland and Norway. As you might know these are countries in Europe, but they are NOT part of the European Union, which means roaming costs can apply for these countries.

Brexit threw the UK out of the European Union and one of the major problems is the free EU roaming on UK prepaid sim cards. Most of the prepaid and e-sim cards you buy in the UK do not include free EU roaming anymore. For more info see my guide for buying a sim card in the UK in 2024 .

Why buying a sim card for Europe

A very simple question? Do you want to rely on others when traveling to Europe? Yes, your hotel, bar, restaurant, train and even park have free public WiFi these days. So getting WiFi when traveling is fairly easy. Yet, Traveltomtom still recommend you getting a sim card for Europe.

Buying a Prepaid Sim Card for Czech Republic in 2024

First of all public WiFi can not be trusted in speed, signal and security. What if the signal in your hotel room is weak and you can't change rooms? Or it is too slow to even upload an Instagram story. Getting connected with your phone makes traveling so much easier, just like real life!

Also another reminder that surfing the internet on public WiFi is through an UNSECURED network. The use of a VPN is recommended in these cases to protect your privacy.

Think about ordering a cab on the streets through a taxi app, or getting directions from Google Maps and finding a nearby restaurants with good reviews or finding out the train schedule to get back to your hotel. So many reasons Traveltomtom recommends getting a sim card for your trip to Europe.

Local prepaid sim cards vs. European sim cards

All sim cards mentioned in this article are sim cards with FREE EU roaming intended for those that visit a couple countries on a short trip. However, if you only travel to 1 or 2 countries in Europe you might be better off buying a local sim card on arrival. Local sim cards are mostly valid in 1 country only. Especially for a trip to Eastern Europe I would recommend buying a local sim card, rather than a European sim card.

For a complete overview of all sim card prices per country have a look at my guide for buying a local sim card in Europe in 2024 .

I love traveling in Europe off the beaten path , have a look at my 12 secret places to visit. I bet some of them you have never even heard of.

Getting connected is the first thing I do when I get to a new country. Depending on the length of my trip that means either buying a local prepaid sim card on arrival or ordering an e-sim card online. Must say that the last years on all my trips to Europe I bought an e-sim card since it is just much easier and less hassle.

Buying a local sim card on arrival in Europe

Sometimes the best European sim card deals you get on arrival in Europe. In France for example you get 150 GB data for €20 EUR ($22 USD) and data bundles in Italy are also very affordable. Most countries in Eastern Europe offer amazing local prepaid sim card deals with up to 75 GB data for just $6 USD but these local prepaid sim cards often do NOT offer free EU data roaming.

Therefore I recommend you to check my complete guide for buying a local sim card in Europe in 2024 , with a specific list of every country in Europe and what prices to expect on arrival before buying a sim card for Europe.

Traveltomtom also wrote sim card guides for all major airports in Europe: Zurich ,  London Heathrow , London Gatwick , Copenhagen , Amsterdam , Paris , Frankfurt , Dublin , Madrid , Manchester , Lisbon , Rome , Milan , Venice , Vienna , Oslo , Athens , Barcelona ,  Berlin , Budapest , Geneva , Bucharest , Tirana , Budapest , Prague , Brussels  and many more.

How to Buy a SIM Card in Belgium in 2024

  • April 26, 2024

Belgium, with its rich history, stunning architecture, and delightful culinary offerings, is a fantastic destination for any traveler. Whether you’re wandering through the medieval streets of Bruges, exploring the vibrant art scene in Brussels, or enjoying the tranquility of the Ardennes, staying connected is key. A local SIM card offers convenient and cost-effective access to mobile data and communication. Here’s your complete guide to buying a SIM card in Belgium in 2024. We’ll also cover how to purchase and use an eSIM in Belgium .

Where Can I Get a SIM Card for Belgium?

Upon arrival in Belgium, particularly at major airports like Brussels Airport and Brussels South Charleroi Airport, you’ll find various kiosks and retail stores selling SIM cards. These outlets are conveniently located in the arrivals area, making it easy to purchase a SIM card as soon as you land.

Mobile Carrier Stores

In major Belgian cities such as Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, and Liege, stores of the main mobile operators offer a variety of SIM card options. These stores are usually found in shopping centers and along main streets.

Electronics Stores

Large electronics retailers such as Media Markt and Vanden Borre also sell SIM cards. They offer a variety of plans from different providers, making it a good spot to compare options.

Convenience Stores

Many convenience stores throughout Belgium, including Carrefour Express and Delhaize, offer prepaid SIM cards. This option is perfect for travelers who need immediate connectivity.

Purchase Before You Travel

Benefits of buying before you travel.

Purchasing a SIM card before your arrival in Belgium offers several advantages:

  • Immediate Connectivity : Activate your phone as soon as you land, saving time and avoiding the hassle of finding a store.
  • Avoid Language Barriers : Choose your plan and purchase your SIM in your own language, ensuring you fully understand the terms and conditions.
  • Peace of Mind : Start your trip knowing that your communication needs are already taken care of.

Buy Your Tourist SIM Card in Belgium

Who are the main operators in belgium.

The telecom market in Belgium is served by several key providers, each offering comprehensive coverage and competitive packages:

  • Proximus : Known for its excellent nationwide coverage and reliable service.
  • Orange Belgium : Offers robust service with competitive data packages.
  • BASE : Known for good customer service and affordable plans.

How to buy a SIM card with Proximus in Belgium

Visit any Proximus store, found in most shopping areas and cities. Proximus offers various plans, including those specifically designed for tourists, featuring generous data allowances.

How to buy a SIM card with Orange Belgium

Orange stores are widespread across Belgian cities and provide a range of SIM card plans that cater to different needs, including those of international visitors.

How to buy a SIM card with BASE

BASE’s retail presence is notable in urban centers, and their stores offer attractive plans for travelers focusing on affordability and flexibility.

Benefits of Buying Your SIM Card in Belgium

Purchasing your SIM card directly in Belgium ensures:

  • Local Rates : Enjoy competitive local rates for data and calls.
  • Immediate Support : Access customer service easily if you encounter any issues.
  • Flexible Plans : Choose a plan based on your specific travel needs, with options to adjust as necessary.

How Much Does a Prepaid SIM Card in Belgium Cost?

Prices for prepaid SIM cards in Belgium are quite affordable, typically starting from around 10 EUR for basic packages with limited data and calls. More comprehensive packages, particularly those designed for tourists, can cost up to 30 EUR and include significant data allowances and some international calling options.

Using an eSIM in Belgium

For those with compatible devices, opting for an eSIM provides a convenient and flexible way to stay connected:

  • Instant Activation : Download and activate your eSIM before you arrive or right after landing.
  • No Physical SIM Required : Avoid the hassle of swapping physical SIM cards, while keeping your home number active.
  • Flexible Plans : Easily switch between different eSIM profiles to find the best rates and coverage.

Using eSIM.net in Belgium

Step 1: choose your esim plan.

Selecting the Right Plan: eSIM.net provides a variety of Belgium eSIM plans tailored to different needs. For your trip to Belgium, consider whether a data-only plan is sufficient or if a more comprehensive package including voice and SMS would be better. Data-only plans are ideal for short visits or if you primarily need internet access, while full-service plans are better for longer stays or if you need to make frequent local and international calls.

Step 2: Purchase and Activate Your eSIM

Buying Your eSIM: You can select and purchase your desired eSIM plan directly from the eSIM.net website. The process is straightforward—pick a plan that matches your duration of stay and anticipated data usage, then complete the transaction. You’ll receive an email with a QR code.

Activating Your eSIM: Ensure your smartphone supports eSIM technology and is unlocked. Navigate to the cellular settings on your device, tap “Add Cellular Plan,” and scan the QR code. Follow the setup prompts, ideally while connected to Wi-Fi, as it requires internet access.

Step 3: Manage Your eSIM

Using the MyeSIM Portal: eSIM.net offers an online portal called MyeSIM, where you can manage your account. This portal allows you to check your data usage, top up your plan as needed, and adjust settings to suit your needs during your stay in Belgium.

Customer Support: If you encounter any issues or have questions regarding your eSIM service, eSIM.net provides robust customer support. Assistance is available via email, or you can access an extensive FAQ section on their website for quick help.

Step 4: Understanding Mobile Usage in Belgium

Data Roaming: If your itinerary includes visiting other EU countries, check if your eSIM plan covers EU-wide roaming. This feature is highly beneficial as it allows you to use your mobile device across the EU with no extra roaming charges.

Network Coverage: Belgium has excellent mobile network coverage, ensuring reliable and fast connectivity across both urban and rural areas. However, coverage can be less consistent in very remote areas.

Step 5: Maximizing Your eSIM Benefits

Cost-Effectiveness: Using an eSIM from eSIM.net can significantly reduce your roaming costs compared to traditional mobile services. It offers a straightforward solution for managing data and calls throughout Belgium without the need for multiple SIM cards.

Flexibility and Convenience: eSIM technology allows easy switching between different plans or carriers without needing to physically change SIM cards. This flexibility is particularly useful if your travel plans are dynamic or if you visit multiple countries during your trip.

Additional Tips for Using eSIM in Belgium

  • Device Compatibility: Before your trip, make sure that your device is compatible with eSIM technology and is unlocked. Most modern smartphones, including recent models from Apple, Samsung, and Google, support eSIMs.
  • Emergency Services: In Belgium, you can dial 112 for emergency services, accessible free of charge from any phone, including those using an eSIM.
  • Public Wi-Fi Access: Take advantage of Belgium’s extensive public Wi-Fi networks available in urban centers, cafes, and public spaces. These can help save on data usage, but always ensure secure connections when accessing sensitive information.
  • Cultural Insights: Familiarize yourself with local customs and mobile usage etiquette to enhance your interactions and avoid any potential misunderstandings. Belgians are known for their multilingualism, so being aware of language preferences in different regions can be beneficial.

The best esim for belgium | prepaid data plan buyer’s guide.

What travelers need to know about buying a prepaid eSIM data plans in Belgium.

phones and technology

tourist sim card brussels

A prepaid eSim data plan is a cheap and simple way to get high-speed data while visiting Belgium and the rest of Europe—don’t waste money on your current plan’s expensive international data service option. So to help you find the best eSIM for Belgium, I’ve crunched the numbers and compared multiple plans to help you find the right data plan for your trip.

Short On Time?  I recommend buying an eSIM plan from either  SimOptions  or  Holafly . Both companies offer multiple affordable prepaid data plans—continue reading this article for my specific recommendations.

The Problems With Using Your Current Mobile Carrier’s International Data Package

Almost every mobile provider has an international data plan that they’re happy to sell you but there are two significant downsides:

  • They’re expensive
  • Service is often slow, inconsistent, and has limited data allowances.

For example, the  AT&T International Day Pass costs $10/day. They also have their AT&T Passport plan, a monthly plan that’s either $70/month for 2GB of data or $140/month for 6GB. Then they charge an insane overage of $30 per GB.

And many T-Mobile customers get free “unlimited” international data but you’re only guaranteed 2g data speeds… which will struggle to load Google Maps or even email. You can pay more to get better speeds but then you’ll be charged a premium.

These “international data plans” are 5X as expensive as buying a prepaid eSIM data plan from a third-party provider—for example, eSIM data plans from  Orange  or  Holafly  will cost you around $2-$4/day.

For more in-depth information on international data plans and eSIM, check out my guide on  How To Use Smartphones and Data Plans In Europe  and my  Guide To eSIM data plans in Europe .

Comparing The Best eSIM Data Plans For Belgium

eSIM Europe Data Plan

Belgium has three major mobile carriers ( Proximus , Orange Belgium , and Telenet/Base ) and three second-tier budget carriers ( Carrefour Mobile Belgium , Lycamobile Belgium , and Vectone Mobile Belgium ) but none of these companies currently offer any prepaid eSIM plans to short-term visitors and tourists. However, tourists can buy physical prepaid SIM cards in Belgium from the major carriers but you’ll need to register the card (passport is required for registration).

So, when it comes to prepaid eSIM plans, your only option is to buy a data plan that’s tailored for short-term visitors. These plans are much more “tourist-friendly” so you don’t have to mess with registration, weird translation issues, etc.

eSIM Plan Considerations

Each eSIM plan I’ve listed is slightly different so pay attention to the specific details—here are the main things to consider:

  • Data Allowance:  Plans typically give you a set amount of mobile data (i.e. 5GB, 10GB, 30GB, etc.) but others give you unlimited data over a set amount of time (5 days, 15 days, 30 days, etc).
  • Plan Length:  eSIM data plans can be valid anywhere from about 5 days to 90 days.
  • Mobile Hot Spot Tethering:  Many eSIM plans don’t allow data tethering so you can’t always use your phone as a mobile hot spot.
  • NOTE: You can still use iMessage to “text” between iPhones but can’t send messages between iPhones and Android phones. Or you can download WhatsApp to send messages over data (which most Europeans do).

Holafly Belgium eSIM with Unlimited Data & European Phone Number

tourist sim card brussels

  • 10 Days: $34
  • 15 Days: $47
  • 20 Days: $54
  • 30 Days: $64
  • 60 Days: $84
  • 90 Days: $99
  • Service Speed:  5G/4G/LTE
  • Calls coverage:  60 minutes of credit make calls from all of Europe—except Iceland, Norway, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Ukraine, and Turkey. Comes with an Austrian phone number that can be used anywhere in the EU.
  • SMS:  None
  • Data Tethering:  No
  • Data service works everywhere in the EU

Holafly  is a new Spain-based eSIM provider I used in Europe and had a great experience. Holafly sells both Belgium-specific plans and Europe-wide data plans.

Unlike other mobile data companies, Holafly gives you unlimited data and a local phone number with 60 minutes of credit for making/receiving calls from European numbers. I’m also a fan of how Holafly’s plans come in durations from 5 to 90 days—so you don’t have to over/underbuy for your particular trip.

Holafly isn’t an actual mobile carrier but they rent bandwidth from local mobile provider networks—the only downside is that you’re more likely to get less priority on the local network during peak usage times.

Holafly doesn’t allow data tethering in most cases so you won’t be able to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

You can read my in-depth Holafly review to learn more about my experiences using Holafly.

Bouygues My European eSIM with Europe Calling

tourist sim card brussels

  • Price: $44.90 (Check SimOptions for details)
  • Data Tethering: Allowed
  • Service Speed: 4G/LTE
  • Calls: Unlimited within Europe and credit for overseas calls
  • Texts/SMS: Unlimited within Europe and credit for overseas SMS
  • Credit validity: 30 day
  • Phone Number: This eSIM card comes with a French phone number
  • Coverage : Anywhere within the European Union (except Switzerland)

Bouygues Telecom is a major French telecommunications company and they’ve recently released their own prepaid eSIM data plan to compete with the popular Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan. I’ve personally used Bouygues prepaid data service on a previous trip to Europe and everything worked well for my needs.

There’s a lot to like about the Bouygues My European eSIM plan—especially since it comes standard with 30GB of data and unlimited calls/texts within Europe. I also like how this Bouygues eSIM plan is valid for 30 days so it’s an excellent option for longer trips.

This plan can also be used as a mobile hotspot which is a great bonus.

Orange Holiday Europe eSIM (50GB)

tourist sim card brussels

  • Price:  $59.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  50GB
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 120 min outside of Europe.
  • Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 1000 outside of Europe.
  • Credit validity:  28 day
  • Data Tethering:  Allowed
  • Usable on any device (phones, tablets, hotspots…)
  • This eSIM plan comes with a French phone number that can still be used anywhere in Europe
  • Service works everywhere in the EU

Need tons of data? Consider the newly released  Orange Holiday Europe 50GB eSIM data plan  which is a beefed-up version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM. It has 50GB of data and it’s valid for 28 days (compared to 14 days with the Orange Holiday Europe plan). This eSIM also comes with many features you don’t find with other plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual French phone number that works anywhere in Europe).

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot so you can put that extra data allowance to good use. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

ORANGE HOLIDAY EUROPE ESIM FOR Belgium

tourist sim card brussels

  • Price:  $49.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  20GB (they sometimes give you 30GB of data)
  • Credit validity:  14 day

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM data plan is a great eSIM plan because it comes with many features you don’t find with other plans—including international voice calling and texts (it includes a French phone number that works anywhere in Europe). The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

This plan comes with 20GB of data but Orange often runs a special where they give you an extra 10GB. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

The potential downside to the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM is that it’s only valid for 14 days once activated so it’s not great for longer visits (but you can always buy a second plan).

I’ve personally used the Orange Holiday Europe plan while traveling through Europe and it worked flawlessly. Read my Orange Holiday Europe review to hear more.

ORANGE HOLIDAY ZEN ESIM FOR Belgium

tourist sim card brussels

  • Price:  $29.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  8GB (they sometimes give you 15GB of data)
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 30 min outside of Europe.
  • Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 200 outside of Europe.

The Orange Holiday Zen eSIM is the budget version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan listed above. It comes with 8GB of data and has fewer voice minutes and texts, otherwise, it’s the same as the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan.

Most users will use more than 8GB of data while traveling for a week or two but light data users could easily use less than 8GB of data during a typical 10-14 day trip.

MORE TIPS ON USING YOUR MOBILE PHONE IN Belgium

tourist sim card brussels

I’ve written multiple articles about using smartphones and data plans in Europe  and tips for  how to buy a SIM Card For Europe but below are some more helpful tips about using your phone in Belgium.

GET A PORTABLE BATTERY CHARGER

I highly recommend a portable battery charger while traveling to ensure your phone doesn’t die in the middle of the day. I use  Anker PowerCore 10000  because it’s tiny and affordable but there are multiple options.

TAKE STEPS TO LOWER YOUR MOBILE DATA USAGE

It’s extremely easy to unknowingly burn through a lot of data because many apps continue to use data in the background. Facebook, email, Instagram, Snapchat… those all constantly use data throughout the day without you knowing it. That’s it’s important to know how to limit your data usage.

USE AIRPLANE MODE AND BLOCK DATA TO SPECIFIC APPS

I’ll put my phone in Airplane Mode because that disables all data (but GPS still works in Airplane Mode). You can also disable data access to each individual app in the settings. I’ll go in and turn every off except for things like Google Maps or others that I’ll use more frequently — this way when I turn off Airplane Mode only those apps that will use data. Then I’ll turn Airplane Mode back on when I’m done.

DOWNLOAD OFFLINE MAPS

Google Maps lets you download entire city maps so they can be used offline. As an added bonus, GPS doesn’t use data so offline Google Maps works fairly well (but not all functionality works). Here is a good  YouTube video  that explains everything.

Whether you need Internet access for a day or a month, there’s at least one great Belgium eSIM package for you. And some even have texts and phone calls included, which is rare for eSIMs.

At A Glance: Top Esims For Belgium

  • Best Belgian eSIM Maya Mobile
  • Cheapest Belgium eSIM Airalo Belganet
  • Best For Unlimited Data & Calls Holafly
  • eSIM with Text & Calls Orange Holiday Europe eSIM
  • Simple call plan O2 Go Card eSIM

This guide covers all the top eSIM providers for Europe that offer eSIMs for Belgium, as well as a few local providers in the country that mostly sell physical sim cards for tourists. In any case, here’s all you need to know about the best eSim for Belgium!

ESIM Product Comparison

Maya mobile.

Maya Mobile is one of my favorites when it comes to Belgium eSIMs . They offer both affordable small prepaid eSIMs as well as unlimited packages for a range of time from 5 – 30 days

They also allow you to do data-sharing, which makes their unlimited plan ideal for heavier users who are working or traveling with others.

Here are some examples of Maya’s plans:

  • 3 GB/5 Days – $6
  • 5 GB/30 Days – $10
  • 10 GB/15 Days – $14
  • 20 GB/30 Days – $25
  • UNLIMITED Belgium 30 Days – $59
  • UNLIMITED Europe+ 30 Days – $59

Maya often uses the fastest mobile networks in the country too. And in Belgium, they use a combination of Proximus ( the fastest ) and Orange.

The only downside I see with Maya is that you don’t get 5G but their unlimited data plans are comparable to Holaflys in most cases – AND they allow hotspots! YAY

  • Very affordable eSIMs
  • Unlimited data with hotspots
  • Best Belgian Mobile Networks
  • Only 4G LTE

Airalo Belganet

With affordable prices and a variety of per GB data packages, Airalo is often the most popular option for Belgian eSIMs. This international eSIM provider offers data packages including:

  • 1 GB/7 days – $4.5
  • 2 GB/15 days – $7
  • 3 GB/30 days – $9
  • 5 GB/30 days – $12.5
  • 10 GB/30 days – $20
  • 20 GB/30 days – $30

Airalo eSIMs allow you to surf the Internet on the BASE and Proximus networks, which offer good coverage throughout the country. It’s great that you can switch between providers for better service, especially if you plan to travel to more remote regions of the country that aren’t covered with free WiFi. Also, you can use 5G on these networks, provided that your phone supports it.

Your Airalo eSIM for Belgium won’t include a phone number, but that’s the case with most other providers as well. You can still use your original phone numbers to make calls and send/receive texts through WhatsApp or a similar service.

  • Affordable prices
  • 5G on top networks
  • Good customer service
  • No unlimited data

Holafly is the most popular eSIM provider for travelers who need (or want) unlimited data. However, it’s important to emphasize that Holafly doesn’t allow you to create a hotspot and share your data, so they’re not the best option if you want to have an Internet connection on multiple devices.

Holafly’s unlimited data eSIM plans for Belgium include:

  • 5 Days – $19
  • 7 Days – $27
  • 10 Days – $34
  • 15 Days – $47
  • 20 Days – $54
  • 30 Days – $64
  • 60 Days – $87
  • 90 Days – $99

The Holafly Belgium eSIM also comes with 60 minutes of calls, which is a new feature they have added to this program. It’s an Austrian number, but it is usable in Belgium nonetheless.

Holafly eSIMs include access to the three big mobile carriers in Belgium

  • Proximus PLC
  • Orange Belgium
  • Telenet Belgium

Being able to switch as you roam the country means you will have a stable Internet connection no matter where you go in Belgium.

Also, Holafly eSIM allows you to use 5G and 4G/LTE networks, which is great news given how lightning-fast 5G can be.

  • Unlimited Data
  • 5G available
  • 3 networks included
  • No hotspot/tethering
  • No super-cheap packages

Nomad is also a really good option for a Belgium eSIM . They offer a wide range of plans including:

  • 1 GB/7 Days – $6
  • 3 GB/15 Days – $12
  • 5 GB/15 Days – $14
  • 10 GB/30 Days – $19
  • 10 GB/30 Days – $27
  • 20 GB/30 Days – $33

If you use up all the data you initially purchased, you can easily buy more data on their official website. The Nomad Belgium eSim allows you to browse the Truphone network, which is an international network provider with coverage all over the world. You will be able to connect to 4G for fast Internet speeds.

I have to point out that Airalo is cheaper and offers 5G access, so they’re still the better option for weekly plans, but Nomad has better options for monthly plans.

  • Mostly 30 days access
  • 20 GB plans available
  • No 5G access yet
  • More expensive

Orange Holiday Europe eSIM

Orange is one of a few providers that offer all-inclusive eSIMs. The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan is pricey at 40 Euros, but it includes 20 GB of data, as well as a (French) phone number that allows you to make calls locally, as well as send and receive texts.

On top of that, this eSIM is valid not just in Belgium, but in 30+ European countries, so it’s great for travelers who plan to visit other countries in Europe as well. It’s important to note that this eSIM plan is valid for 14 days after activation, and you can purchase a recharge option that allows you to extend the validity of the plan after it expires.

One thing to note is that you can use this eSIM for up to a month, but after that period you will need to complete a KYC (Know Your Customer) questionnaire in order to keep using it, as per requirements of French laws.

  • Text & Calls included
  • 20 GB of data
  • Great combo package for travel
  • Not the cheapest per GB

Orange Holiday Zen eSIM

The Orange Holiday Zen eSIM is essentially the same thing as their Holiday Europe eSIM, but it’s cheaper because it includes less data and free texts/call minutes. You will get 8 GB of data, a local (French) phone number, 30 minutes of calls, and 200 free texts.

This eSIM is also valid in 30+ countries all over Europe, and it’s also possible to extend its validity period after the initial 14 days expire. Registration will be necessary with a KYC questionnaire if you want to keep using the eSIM for more than a month.

  • 8 GB of data
  • More expensive than others

Ubigi might just be your best option if you’re going to travel to multiple countries. This provider also has two Belgium eSIM plans that include:

  • 3 GB/30 Days – $9

They also offer monthly plans that are more affordable, but obviously only make sense for someone coming here regularly. For example, they offer a Belgium eSIM for $9 a month for 5 GB.

And their 500 MB for $2 for 1 day is ideal for anyone making a short trip to Belgium just to see the sights of one city, for example.

  • Great regional plans (Europe)
  • Good for longer stays
  • Not the cheapest

O2 Go Card eSIM

The O2 Go Card is a prepaid Belgium eSIM for tourists that allows Internet access in all countries of the European Union. It costs $25, it’s valid for 30 days, and it includes 10 GB of data, as well as free phone calls on the O2 network in the entire EU.

This SIM card is great value for money, especially if you’re going to travel to countries other than Belgium. You can choose between a physical sim card and an eSIM, and both cost the same which is great. It’s also possible to top up the card when you use up all the data, and the first time you purchase a top-up, you’ll get an extra $2 worth of credit!

  • Very affordable
  • Easy to set up
  • Includes calls
  • Not many options

Benefits of Getting an eSIM in Belgium

The main benefit of getting an eSIM for Belgium is that you will have Internet access everywhere. While the bigger cities in the country have decent free WiFi coverage, if you’re planning to travel to the villages or more remote areas of Belgium, you can’t rely on free WiFi access.

That’s why you should get an eSIM, so you can always have the option of accessing the Internet if necessary. Another advantage of getting an eSIM specifically is that you can use it alongside your sim card, and still receive all the texts and calls you would regularly.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSIMs in Belgium

Proximus is one of the best local providers in Belgium that offer eSIMs. However, all the eSIMs from this provider all available only with their postpaid plans, so they’re not a good option for tourists who want a prepaid card.

They have a prepaid Pay As You Go plan with a physical sim card that you can purchase for just 5 Euros. It will get you 10 Euros of credit plus 3 GB of data, which is a really good deal. It’s worth noting that this is a web promotion you can take advantage of only in their online store, so you won’t get the same deal if you purchase a tourist sim card in a physical store.

Orange is another major network operator that offers Belgium eSIMs, but from what I understand these are sold exclusively to business customers. You’re better off buying one of the Orange Holiday Europe plans online, than trying to purchase one in a physical store.

Devices Compatible with eSIM in Belgium

All the devices that support embedded-sim technology will be compatible with eSIMs in Belgium. This includes all iPhones from the iPhone XS onward, Google Pixel phones from the second generation onward, and Samsung Galaxy S phones from the S20 onward.

It’s worth noting that, while all the iPhones released in the past 5 years support eSIMs, not all Androids do. Many Android manufacturers are still reserving this feature for their best and most expensive phones, so if you don’t daily drive a flagship Android, it’s probably for the best to double-check whether your smartphone supports the technology.

Dial *#06# and look for an EID number. This is a unique identifier that indicated your smartphone supports an eSIM. If you don’t see an EID number, it’s likely that your phone doesn’t support eSIMs, and you will need to look for physical sim cards instead.

Data Needed When Traveling to Belgium

Not sure how much data you need for your trip to Belgium? Consider the length of your trip as well as what you need the mobile data for during your time in the European country.

If you’re staying for a little while and you want mobile data just to be able to check directions on maps and access social media and emails, you should be fine with 1-3 GB of data, especially if you have WiFi in your accommodation.

On the other hand, if you consider yourself a heavy user and you plan to watch a lot of movies and videos during a longer stay, it’s best to go for plans with a larger data allowance. Unlimited data is also a good option, as long as you’re fine with the fact that you can’t create a hotspot and share that data with the Holafly eSIM, which is the only provider with an unlimited data package.
