Central London is awash with landmarks and physical traces of bygone times, such as Shakespeare's Globe Theater from Elizabethan times or the Roman baths in Billingsgate from, you guessed it, Roman times.

However, there is little left of Anglo-Saxon London, a period of time that stretched over 600 years between 410 to 1066.

Thankfully, the historian Tom Holland has mapped out an epic 24 walk across London through the Middle Ages, citing place-names, street-plans and buildings of Anglo-Saxon significance along the way. His epic Twitter thread is

Beyond the old Roman city, through the emergent settlement of 'Lundenwic', across what is now Greater London, traces can be found of Anglo-Saxon settlements such as farms, assembly points and trading centres.

Our journey begins in Brixton , recorded in 1062 as 'Brixiges stan', meaning ‘the stone of Beorhtsige’.

The 'stone' is thought to refer to an assembly point for the hundred courts of Surrey, and since such assembly points were generally on high ground, the stone of Beorhtsige presumably stood on Brixton Hill.

Next up is Dulwich , recorded in a 967 charter issued by Edgar the Peaceablea as 'Dilwihs', meaning 'marshy meadow where a dill grows'.

A few minutes north of Dulwich lies the south-east London suburb of Peckham , recorded in the Domesday Book as 'Pecheham', a homestead by the river Peck.

An hour or so East of Peckham, you will find Greenwich , recorded in a charter of 918 as 'Gronewic', meaning 'green trading emporium.'

This area was notorious in the annals of Anglo-Saxon London for the shocking murder of St Alphege, the Archbishop of Canterbury during the dark days of Ethelred the Unready's reign (King of England 978-1016).

Captured by Vikings after the storming of Canterbury in 1011, he was held prisoner for seven months, then pelted to death with ox bones by his drunken captors in Greenwich.

According to historian Tom Holland: "The Vikings killed Alphege because he had refused to allow a ransom to be paid for his release.

"They kept his corpse but then when a stick immersed in his blood suddenly sprouted blossom, they were brought to repentance, & released his body."

The next stop on tour is Woolwich , recorded in 918 as 'Uuluuich' meaning, 'a trading emporium dealing in wool'.

An early Christian burial site dating from the 7th century was found here in 2015 – 76 skeletons in all.

North of Woolwich is Barking, recorded in a charter of 735 as 'Berecingum', meaning either 'settlement of the descendants of Bereca' or 'dwellers among the birch trees.

Here, Barking Abbey, founded by St Earconwald, was perhaps of Kentish royal descent and subsequently became Bishop of London in the 660s or 670s.

Tom added, "Barking Abbey was a great centre of female learning – indeed, it has been described as ‘perhaps the longest-lived ... institutional centre of literary culture for women in British history."

The abbey was demolished following its dissolution by Henry VIII, and all that remains is the Curfew Tower, one of the abbey’s three gateways, built in the mid 15th century.

Across the Thames heading northwards is West Ham: 'Hamme' is first mentioned in a charter of 958 and means 'a dry area of land between rivers or marshland' - the rivers, in this case, being the Thames, the Lea & the Roding.

Then we have Stepney in Tower Hamlets home to St Dunstan’s - "The Mother Church of the East End", & miraculously spared in the Blitz - was founded in 952, on the site of an earlier church.

In-keeping with the theme of churches, All Hallows-by-the-Tower, the oldest church in the City overlooking the Tower of London, has various fragments of Anglo-Saxon sculpture.

Two Anglo-Saxon kings are also known to have been buried in St Paul’s: Saebbi, King of the East Saxons, who was converted by Erkenwald, and Ethelred the Unready.

These tombs for them were built in the 12th century, etched in 1658, and destroyed in the Great Fire.

Aldwych in Westminster (‘the old emporium) was where, after Roman London had become a ghost town; commercial activity began to recover c. AD 600.

Moving onto Covent Garden, excavations here in 1985 and 2005 revealed that London in the 7th and 8th centuries had been, by the age standards – a substantial settlement.

Last but not least, Westminster Abbey stands on what was once Thorney Island, which in 785 was granted by Offa of Mercia "to St Peter and the needy people of God in the terrible place called Westminster."

According to Tom, "Edward the Confessor moved his palace to Westminster and began building a massive new abbey to the east of the earlier building."

Westminster Abbey is also where, on Christmas Day 1066, William of Normandy was crowned King of England - a suitable destination to conclude your Anglo Saxon tour of London.

Anglo Saxon School Visits

The Anglo Saxon school visit can be booked for one or several classes for a full day or a half day.  The costs quoted can cover one or both Specialists to come into local schools (please see our Terms and Conditions) – unless the booking is particularly required on a day when one of us is already booked.

Below is an outline of a typical Anglo Saxon Visit.

Children are summoned by horn-blowing.  Everyday clothing, objects and way of life are discussed.

Some of the kit for our well established Viking day fits into the Anglo Saxon visit too.

Warrior Session

Anglo saxon warrior.

This session offers the opportunity for children to learn about weaponry of the time.  Volunteers are also involved in handling various authentic objects most of which are of museum quality.  Children will learn how to handle shields and may even try on the Anglo Saxon helmet.

Folk Moot inc. Dancing

An opportunity to gather together to handle important local matters!.  Children will be subjected to a range of trials utilising techniques from Drama.  Then everybody learns a communal dance.

Broochmaking

This simple, teacher-led session incorporates art/DT and facilitates the Specialist policy of working with large numbers of children throughout the school day at no extra cost.

Writing With Quill Pens

This teacher-led session compares the writing with runes of the common man with the quill pens used by Anglo Saxon monks.  It can be left as a follow up on days where Gregric is booked for a single class.

Pastimes, Toys & Games

Children will have the opportunity to play games such as Knucklebones, Fivestones and Dice.  We bring a class set of solid wood Nine Men’s Morris boards for children to challenge each other.  Optionally, children may also make their own Three Men’s Morris game.

Storytelling

We end the day with a myth told in oral tradition, combined with more interactive storytelling as a whole group.  All of the children join in, playing simple parts in a light-hearted tale.

We, Greg and Lisa, work fully in role as Anglo Saxon settlers. This means that we use our subject knowledge to respond to questions and talk as Anglo Saxons would do.  To achieve this we use a medieval-flavoured pattern of speech to lend a realistic feel to our words whilst remaining clear enough for children to understand.  This historical interpreter’s commitment to authenticity is tempered with a teacher’s sense of appropriateness though – so we do not swear (as some reenactors will in school, claiming that this was the way it was!).

Our focus is on the educational experience for the children and what serves them best, so the sessions are interactive and involve everyone.The overall experience for children is then an immersive one where they feel they have truly met an Anglo Saxon and gained a picture of Anglo Saxon life.  The sessions are interactive and involve all of the children.

The day is fully risk assessed and this can be emailed upon request.  Confirmation of booking is taken as a contract between the school and The Specialists and acceptance of our T & C’s .

Greg and Lisa McCarthy have many years of experience working with children. Greg is a teacher and Lisa a former Occupational Therapist in learning disabilities. Both have DBS  and public liability insurance.

Resources are meticulously researched and authentic to the period.  We will bring real animal hide and animal bone objects.  We understand if anyone is sensitive to this (Lisa is a vegetarian in real life!) but please be prepared.  Our bone replica artefacts really are made of bone – not plastic! 

Anglo Saxon school visits for education.  We provide a living history and reenactment service as historical interpreters focusing on the Invaders and Settlers topic.  As re-enactors, we use storytelling, songs, dance, writing using runes and artefacts such as toys and games, brooches, full Warrior kit etc. to bring the excitement of real history to your classroom.

Anglo Saxon Tour - KS2

Bakewell is an Anglo-Saxon town, owing its origins to events during the reigns of King Edward the Elder and King Athelstan.

This short walking tour of the town covers Anglo-Saxon invasions, settlements and kingdoms, place names, Anglo-Saxon art and Christian conversion. It discusses King Edward’s defence of his kingdom from the Danes and King Athelstan’s  expansion of his father’s kingdom. It provides first-hand contact with the places and artefacts that shaped  Bakewell’s history.

Sites, locations and buildings can be visited to suit the individual focus of a school’s work. You can choose to visit:

• The probable site of King Edward’s burh
• The Anglo-Saxon watermeadows and warm springs
• The site of town ford
• An internationally famous collection of Anglo-Saxon sculpture
• Two Anglo-Saxon cross shafts, which are grade 2 listed monuments
• Still visible remnants of the Anglo-Saxon common field system.

This package includes a free consultation for teachers, with the local guide, to determine which elements will best meet the needs of pupils and support the teaching of staff.

Medieval Bakewell

The three parts of the town with significant medieval remains are the site of the motte & bailey castle, the bridge crossing the river in the middle of town, and,to the west, the church with its equally old artefacts and churchyard. The medieval farming system and warm springs can also be included if required.

The earthworks of the remaining motte are about half a mile east of the town centre and it is possible to include this in the tour. If you prefer to avoid the uphill walk to reach this (it is downhill back to town) you can learn about its significance by examining sketches and photos along with the guide’s explanation.

Was the castle a look-out post forpayment of tolls, or a defensive feature with views of any medieval troops movements? Did the 920 burh half a mile away still have a defensive role?

What sort of bridge replaced the ford, how did it accommodate caravans of packhorses and what did they carry? Did the bridge widening come before or after the first cars?

Was there a wooden church and when was the first stone church built? Why was this destroyed, by whom, what replaced it and why were all these buildings on such a hillside? When and why did the centre of the church collapse; what foundations were discovered and where can they be seen now? How old is oldest skeleton found and why was it carbon dated? About how many bodies do academics suggest are buried in the churchyard? What is special about the cross shafts and medieval artefacts inside the church?

Tudor Bakewell - KS2

Bakewell grew and developed significantly during the Tudor dynasty (1485 – 1603), due largely to the wealth created by lead mining and wool production.

This tour provides KS1 and KS2 classes with the opportunity to visit Tudor buildings in Bakewell, with a local guide. It covers similarities and differences between Tudor life and the present day, events beyond living memory e.g. dissolution of the monasteries and the effects of the Reformation on church and everyday Tudor life, significant people in this locality, including the Manners and  Gell families and the introduction of poor law legislation of 1536-1601.

Groups may choose from:

• the old market hall
• the old town hall and original almshouses
• the later almshouses
• the parish church and the alterations necessitated by Thomas Cromwell’s injunctions.
• the site of the chantry chapels
• the Tudor house of the Gell family

Pupils will be encouraged to consider the changes effected in Bakewell due to the increased wealth of benefactors in Tudor times and the changes in religious life during the reigns of Henry VIII and his three children. They will be introduced to the physical evidence in Bakewell’s buildings and the evidence of written documents.

Victorian Bakewell

Ks1 and ks2.

Bakewell was a coaching town during the reign of Queen Victoria. It also saw the development of local industry, dependent on water power from the River Wye.* Increased prosperity led to the development of banking  and to the demand for education for the children of  merchants, bankers  and professionals.

KS1 and KS2 pupils can visit sites in Bakewell to learn about changes within or beyond living memory.

Classes can select from the following:

• bridge widened for increased Victorian traffic
• coaching inns and stables
• Victorian alterations to Bakewell market hall
• Victorian police station and fire station
• buildings in use as schools during the era
• banks built during Victoria’s reign
• almshouses in use during Victoria’s reign
• the parish church with extensive Victorian alterations.
• Bakewell Workhouse

Emphasis will be placed upon the chronological nature of development during the Victorian era. Pupils’ attention will be drawn to changes in industry, commerce and transport. Evidence of these changes will be discussed.

This package includes a free consultation for teachers, with the local guide, to establish the outcomes that staff wish to achieve and how the elements can be adapted to suit the history units taught in individual schools.

At the end of the 18 th  century, Bakewell saw the early stages in the development of the factory system. This was possible, because of its situation on the River Wye and its suitability for water power.

Sir Richard Arkwright built a factory in Bakewell, installing his newly developed “water frame”. This enabled cotton yarn to be produced continuously, more quickly and more cheaply. It also contributed to the rise in Bakewell’s population and caused discord with existing mill owners.

Classes can choose to visit and view from outside:

• Sir Richard Arkwright’s mill site
• the mill stream and mill pond
• the home of Richard Arkwright junior
• the nearby Victoria mill with it’s existing mill-wheel
• millworkers’ cottages

Emphasis will be placed upon the chronological development of the cotton industry, both in Bakewell, the north of England and its connections with the wider world. Pupils’ attention will be drawn to the changes over time in the industry. Evidence of these changes will be discussed.

Geography Tour - KS2

This tour is designed to include:

• locational knowledge
• place knowledge
• human and physical geography.

Locational knowledge covers

• the naming and locating of the county of Derby
• the geographical region of the Peak District.
• how land use patterns have changed over time.

The human geography of the area will include:

• the origin of the factory system locally
• the changes in agricultural practices
• the development of the settlement of Bakewell since Anglo-Saxon times.
• trade links
• use of water power as source of energy

Physical geography:

• Key topographical features such as hills, valleys and river

Geographical skills:

• use of maps, diagrams and aerial photographs
• use of fieldwork to observe and record human and physical features in the local area.

Classes can visit the River Wye and discover the many ways water power has been used over the centuries, three water mills and their industrial use, examine transport routes which have persisted over the years, but changed in their usage. They can discover why Bakewell has developed in the Wye valley, the factors in its agricultural and industrial growth and why the town centre has changed location since the 10 th  century.
