Highlights of Poland (Classic, 10 Days)
Poland is a great country, however the itinerary is much too structured and fast-paced. There was no time to just enjoy the city without getting information overload. Everything was on a strict time constraint. There needs to be in a change in the itinerary, and for the price that was paid I much rather go with another tour operator. That being said I will say the food and the accommodation work great as well as the tour leader.

Cotswolds Walking Tour
What a wonderful experience we have had on our “Cotswolds, Castles & Cottages” Tour. Our visit to Sudeley Castle was delightful, Hailes Abbey and it’s historical story was made most interesting by having the portable audio commentary provided by English Heritage, and Chedworth Roman Villa is fascinating to visit. To be in the English Cotswolds countryside is an opportunity which we have been so lucky to have had. It was a delight to walk amongst all these ancient thatched cottages. As our Tour Leader had already told us, the Cotswold Cottages are beautifully preserved and it has been awesome to be able to enjoy being amongst them with their magnificent English gardens full of the perfume of their beautiful Roses and their unbelievable colours, and together with all the awesome varieties of English flowers in these gardens, was admired by us all our cameras have recorded amazing memories.

Reviews of tours to europe castle s.
We really enjoyed our tour. Our tour guide, Marty, was terrific! He shared the history of each area we visited, the meaning of Irish words, fantastic pub/restaurant and museum recommendations and even had alternate plans for us when the Jameson Whiskey tour was canceled because of record rainfall and flooding (we got a refund too!). Our accommodations were always close to City Centre, clean, comfortable and had a delicious breakfast. It was a great experience!

I really enjoyed the tour. Everything was well organized and the tour guide was super nice and informative. Would definitely recommend??

Castle Vacations: Unforgettable Vacation Trips To Castles in Europe
Experiencing Europe’s Most Magnificent Castles Whilst on Vacation
It’s perfectly possible to stay in a Medieval castle hotel in Europe .
Or – if that’s potentially a bit chilly for you – there’re many tours and trips to help you discover the most magnificent castles within the continent.
Or – if you’ve got a car and the enthusiasm to explore – you could devise your own itinerary around Britain, Germany, Spain or Austria, and discover some magnificent castles en route .
1. Castle Hotels: A Selection of Europe’s Finest
If you’d like to stay in a castle, there are plenty of hotels in Europe which’ll allow you to do just that.
There’s one thing I should bring up though before we begin, though. Although there are some exceptions to every rule, few hotels are in Medieval castles. This would be pretty impractical – and freezing cold.
Most castle hotels tend to be within ‘follies’ – c18th, c19th or c20th neo-gothic mansions, that were built to evoke the beauty of Medieval castles. These buildings have beauty and history in their own right – just bear in mind they won’t date to the Middle Ages.
Here are my picks of some of the most interesting castle hotels in Europe.
Stay in a Medieval Castle in England
Luxury-class Amberley Castle Hotel, in England, is unique – it’s a high end lodging in an authentic, bona-fide Medieval castle.
The castle has a truly fascinating history. The castle is more than 900 hundred years old and bloomed into significance in the early Modern period – it was visited by Henry VIII, no less, and was then leased to Elizabeth I between 1588 – 1603.
The little fortress is in the South Downs (driveable from London) and is a stone’s throw from an achingly quaint English village of the same name. As a cute touch, they even raise the drawbridge at night!
A Selection of Castle Hotels in Ireland
Ireland has a burgeoning market in luxury castle hotels, studded across the hills and dales of the Emerald Isle.
There’s, of course, a fair selection of hotels around Dublin – including Clontarf Castle, a modernised, neo-gothic mansion that’s enduringly popular with visitors.
If you’re more interested in a rural weekend in a country pile, world-famous Ashford Castle is housed in 350 acres of countryside, good for all manner of hunting and fishing.
Read more about my recommended Castle hotels in Dublin and Ireland. . .
2. Organised Castle Tours and Guided Daytrips
If you’re coming to Europe from an international flight, you’re almost certainly going to spend a few days in a capital city: London, Madrid, Paris, or perhaps to some of the hubs in Germany – such as Frankfurt or Munich.
These big cities are always great starting points for a guided tour to some of the greatest castles in the region.
Castle Tours from London, UK
There are loads of excellent castles to visit in London and its environs – and as a Londoner, I promise you an incredible time here 😉
Evidently, the Tower of London is unmissable – a brilliantly preserved piece of heritage in the heart of our city.
The other essential visit is within Greater London, to Henry VIII’s Hampton Court Palace. I know it’s not technically a castle but I can’t imagine you’d pass up an opportunity to visit.
Both these sites are within the central zones of the London transport system and are accessible from any hotel.
Slightly further from London – about 1hr each way in travel-time – you’ll discover Windsor Castle (the Queen’s official residence).
The other two castles I’d personally recommend in daytrip-distance would be storybook Bodiam Castle (you’ll need your own car) and Dover Castle, so-called ‘defender of England’ which is perfectly possible to reach by train.
I recommend Viator as a tour guide, as they run some excellent heritage trips from London to these points of interest.
Castle Tours within Germany
Munich is undoubtedly the European destination for anyone who’s keen to get out there and visit some of the world’s most famous castles.
It’s the access-point for visiting the castles of ‘Mad King Ludwig’ – including the spectacular Neuschwanstein and his smaller palaces of Linderhof and Hohenschwangu.
There are a number of other castles in Bavaria which, although somewhat less accessible, have a more authentic flavour than King Ludwig’s rather grand and chintzy creations.
If you’re heading to Western Germany on vacation, I’d personally recommend Heidelberg Castle to be an excellent daytrip from either Frankfurt or Stuttgart.
To get the most pleasure from a visit though, I would recommend an overnight stay.
It is technically possible to visit Neuschwanstein Castle (one of the world’s most famous sites) from either Frankfurt or Stuttgart, but Munich would be a much better stopping-off point.
Visiting Castles from Madrid, Spain
I adore Madrid – it’s seethingly busy at any hour of the day, and its compact size makes it easy to explore on foot.
The closest – and most famous Spanish castle is undoubtedly the Alcazar of Segovia – the inspiration behind the Disneyworld Cinderella Castle, it’s said.
Segovia is eminently possible as a daytrip from Madrid, but has a number of interesting heritage sites (including the Roman aqueduct) so you could certainly spend a night there.
Many tourists from the USA fall head-over-heels for Medieval Toledo – it’s not a castle, as such, but this is a gorgeous little town that’s a common day-trip from Madrid, and fulfils many fantasies of Don Quixote.
3. Self-Drive Itineraries to Take In Amazing Castles
If you’re planning on coming to Europe and exploring some of our beautiful castles under your own steam, I promise you that you’ll have a phenomenal trip.
My personal advice would be to fly into a European capital and enjoy the sights and sounds for a few days. You could take a couple of castle day-trips or private tours, as detailed above.
From there, I’d counsel that you should hire a car and embark on a road-trip.
Castles tend to be secreted away from main cities, and so the freedom of a car will free you from the restrictions of public transport.
This website is absolutely full of my favourite castles in Europe, so it’ll hopefully help you glean some inspiration to compile an itinerary.

On-Tour Luggage & Carry-On Bag Size Limits
Luggage : Each guest traveling may bring one suitcase no larger than 30” x 18” x 10" and weighing no more than 50 lb
Carry-On Bag : *Restricted to one piece per person, not to exceed 12” x 11” x 6”
- *Please note : A "carry-on bag" on a tour coach is not the same as a "carry-on" for a flight. Because our coaches have large windows to enjoy the view, there is minimal space to store large items securely overhead or under the seats. A "carry-on bag" may be a soft-sided daypack, purse, backpack, tote bag, or the like. Because we value our guests' safety, small rolling suitcases or bags with telescopic handles are not permitted. In order to guarantee a smooth trip, guests are not permitted to store an additional "carry-on" bag beneath the coach with the luggage.
So your driver and any hotel porters can safely lift and transport your suitcase throughout your vacation, we strongly recommend that you test the weight of your baggage prior to travel. You should be able to lift and comfortably transport it for short distances.
Baggage allowances vary from airline to airline, and you should check with your chosen carrier for details prior to travel.
Packing Tips for Your Tour
Packing for a guided tour will vary depending on the duration of the trip, the time of year, and the activities planned. Here is a general packing list to help you get started:
Passport and Travel Documents : Ensure you have your passport , travel insurance , and any necessary travel documents.
- Comfortable walking shoes: Cobblestone streets and uneven terrain require comfortable footwear.
- Lightweight, breathable clothing: Pack clothes suitable for the season. Bring a mix of short-sleeved tops, lightweight pants or skirts, and a few long-sleeved options for cooler evenings for the summer months, and long-sleeved and heavier layers for early Spring, Fall, and Winter.
- Layers: It's advisable to bring a light jacket or sweater and a scarf for layering, especially in Spring or Fall.
- Nice evening wear: You may wish to wear a dressier outfit if you plan on dining in an elegant restaurant, for example. Smart-casual clothes are usually acceptable for all included daytime and evening activities throughout your tour.
- Rain Gear: Depending on the season and the countries you're visiting, it's a good idea to pack a compact rain jacket or umbrella.
Sun Protection:
- Hat, sunglasses, UV-protective clothing.
- Sunscreen with high SPF. If you're visiting any coastal areas, bring reef-safe sunscreen formulated without harmful chemicals known to be damaging to coral reefs and marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been found to contribute to coral bleaching and negatively impact marine ecosystems. Look for sunscreens with certifications such as "Reef Safe," "Coral Safe," or "Ocean-Friendly" to ensure they are environmentally friendly .
Medications and First Aid:
- Any prescription medications you need. (See more below under Health & Wellness)
- Basic first aid kit with adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, etc.
Toiletries:
- Travel-sized toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, and toothpaste.
- Travel towel (quick-drying and compact).
- Hand sanitizer and wet wipes.
- A washcloth and carry bag (often not available in hotels abroad).
Electronics:
- A camera: You’re traveling to see extraordinary scenery and sites. So that you don't miss a single moment, bring a trustworthy camera. Check out our travel photography tips for capturing the best photos of your trips. If you feel comfortable, you can also try the camera on your phone . However, if you want to zoom in or capture moving objects, a camera might be your best bet.
- Mobile phone.
- Chargers for each electronic you bring.
- Travel adapter and/or voltage converter
- Portable power bank for charging devices on the go.
- Small travel hair dryer (make sure you have the correct converter and adapter).
Miscellaneous:
- A travel-friendly daypack or bag to carry your essentials during excursions.
- Insect repellent.
- Reusable water bottle. At GET, we’re all about caring for our planet , and with that in mind, we always recommend that you pack a reusable water bottle for your trip. Bringing your own reusable water bottle or asking for tap water at restaurants means you can make a difference by reducing your vacation plastic waste.
- A small travel alarm.
- A travel iron if you like your clothes to be pressed.
- A travel pillow.
- Scarf or shawl for visiting religious sites or to cover up in conservative areas.
- Light sleepwear.
- A new, blank journal to document your trip. Don't know your travel journal style? Find out here !
- Ziplock bags (storing snacks, toiletries, and keeping things organized).
Remember to pack light and versatile items that can be mixed and matched for different outfits. Laundry facilities are often available, or you can have your clothes laundered at hotels during your trip. It's also a good idea to pack a small bag or backpack to bring on the coach for day trips and excursions, leaving your larger luggage at the hotel.
Electricity
- American appliances run on 110-120 volts at 60 Hz, while the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland run on 220-230 volts at 50 Hz.
- Type G outlets are used throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. Adapters are used to change the plug style from American-style plugs with two flat prongs to fit into these outlets, which take three rectangular prongs.
- You will need a plug adapter and voltage converter to use your appliances in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
- We recommend purchasing an adapter with a voltage converter so you can pack less. Also, pick up any necessary adapters or converters for your electronic devices before departing on your guided tour and bringing them.
Hair Dryers in Your Hotel
Hair dryers are standard accessories in hotels. Should you want to bring your own, though, you will need to bring an adapter and voltage converter or make sure it is dual voltage by checking the label for INPUT AC 120V - 240V or a switch that can be set to 125V or 250V. Many devices have this feature, so it's worth checking before you travel. If you need a hair dryer during your trip but can't find one in your hotel room, you can inquire with the hotel staff. Many hotels will be able to provide a hair dryer upon request, either at the front desk or through housekeeping.
Air Conditioning
- Air conditioning is commonly available in European and United Kingdom hotels, restaurants, and public spaces, especially in major cities and tourist areas, but it is worth noting that the settings will differ from what you are used to in the USA.
- However, it's important to note that not all accommodations or historic buildings may have air conditioning, particularly in more traditional or rural settings.
- Most hotels in Europe or the UK can provide a portable fan for additional room cooling if requested. Your Travel Director will be on hand to assist you throughout your trip.
Traveling by coach
Our modern air-conditioned coaches have been selected with your comfort in mind. Your Travel Director will familiarize you with all the onboard features, including a washroom fitted for your convenience and comfort. Regular stops are made to stretch your legs, take refreshments, fill up your water bottles, and use the facilities.

Exact payment options will be advised locally by your Travel Director/Local Representative for each Optional Experience, but in many cases, cash, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are all accepted.
It is recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses while abroad.
In order to ensure a healthy and enjoyable trip, we strongly suggest that you pack a plentiful supply of any medication you may need while on vacation. Here’s what you need to know about traveling with medications .
Prior to traveling, please notify GET of any disability requiring special assistance or any specific dietary needs that you may have, and we will strive to accommodate these.
It's essential to ensure that your routine vaccinations are up-to-date before traveling to any destination. Routine vaccinations may include vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, and influenza.
When traveling with GET, baggage handling at hotels, service charges, and tips for hotel wait staff (for included meals) will all be taken care of by your Travel Director. There are, however, a few instances where individual tipping is welcome.

It is customary to show appreciation for the insights, stories, and know-how shared with you by the Local Specialists, and we suggest a gratuity equivalent to $1.00-$2.00 USD per person per half day.

For your convenience and ease, there is an option to pre-pay gratuities for the Travel Director and Driver at the time of booking.
Hotel services
It is customary to tip hotel staff for room service delivery if the charge has not already been added to the bill. Where ice machines are not available, and you receive ice from the bar, a small tip to the bartender is always appreciated.

Day 3 – CASTLES, CASTLES, CASTLES – RUDESHEIM
Cruising all day on the Rhine on the most beautiful stretch of the river, the part added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list. We travel upstream past the Loreley Rock and lots of medieval castles on both sides of the river to most charming RUDESHEIM (Rüdesheim or Ruedesheim in German).
Time for lunch and souvenirs in famous Drosselgasse, and afterwards we take a cable car uphill through the vineyards to the Niederwald Monument. Be prepared for incredible views over the valley.
We re-board our Rhinesteamer back and later have a great dinner in a typical Rheinkeller with wine tasting.

Rudesheim from above
Day 4 – MARKSBURG, KOBLENZ, EHRENBREITSTEIN
Today we cross the river by ferry to Braubach, the Town of Roses where we take a guided tour of the MARKSBURG, an 11th century castle, the only one on the Rhine that was never destroyed.
We continue to KOBLENZ, meaning confluence, where the Moselle joins the Rhine at the Deutsches Eck (the German Corner). Admire the equestrian statue of Wilhelm I.
Time to explore Koblenz on you own, before we take a cable car up to EHRENBREITSTEIN Fortress for an inside visit at the Museum of the Rhine.

We continue to COLOGNE (Köln), the biggest city on our tour and on the Rhine. See the famous gothic Cathedral, and join the locals in one of Germany's longest pedestrian zones for a Koelsch or a cup of coffee.
Late afternoon arrival back at your hotel. Dinner.

Day 6 – MOSELLE RIVER, BURG ELTZ, COCHEM, TRIER
Today we drive upstream along the MOSELLE River, which in scenery, castles and vineyards does not stand in the shadow of its big brother, the Rhine.
Our first stop is the twelfth century BURG ELTZ, rising majestically above the rear end of the wild Eltz Valley, one of Germany's most beautiful castles, surrounded by the river on three sides. Inside visit.
We continue to COCHEM, located on an idyllic bend on the river, where you have time for lunch on the Moselle Promenade.
Then on to TRIER, Germany's oldest city, with lots of Roman sights. We get a deeper insight into this place with a guided walking tour, which takes you inside the Porta Nigra, a roman fortress from the second century, and the best preserved roman construction north of the Alps. The tour also includes the Cathedral, one of Germany's oldest churches with foundations dating from the fourth century, and the Church of our Dear Lady, the oldest purely gothic church in Germany. All three sights are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Time for dinner on your own in Trier tonight before we return to the hotel.

Day 7 – RHEINFELS, HEIDELBERG, BURGENSTRASSE
Today say goodbye to the Rhine after your visit to RHEINFELS CASTLE in St. Goar and head south to HEIDELBERG, on the banks of the Neckar river. In medieval times the Electoral Palatinate with Heidelberg as the political centre was one of the most advanced European States.
See the beautiful red-walled Heidelberg Castle (Heidelberger Schloss in German), including the great vat, with a guided tour. Afterwards we take a cogwheel train down into the city where you have more time for sightseeing, shopping and postcards.
Tonight we are staying in a typical country hotel in the Neckar valley on the BURGENSTRASSE (Castle Road).
> Buffet breakfast, door-to-door transportation, Heidelberg Castle Tour, Cogwheel Train, three-course, hotel in Neckar valley
Day 8 – ROTHENBURG, THE ROMANTIC ROAD, WURZBURG
Our last traveling day takes us to medieval ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER in Frankonia, where you feel like you just jumped back into the 16th century. Completely surrounded by its medieval ramparts with countless towers, Rothenburg is famous for its ancient houses, fountains, cobbled lanes, hidden corners and street signs. Also famous for the Meistertrunk, in which -- according to legend -- the burgomeister saved the town by emptying a 6-pint tankard in one single draught.
After lunch we take the ROMANTIC ROAD all the way to where it starts, to WURZBURG (Würzburg or Wuerzburg in German) on the Main River. Take a guided tour of Wurzburg Residenz (Residence), this superb baroque palace, one of the biggest in Germany, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the staircase, the frescoes by Tiepolo, the Hofkirche and the Gardens.
Afterwards you have time to see more of Wurzburg on your own and get your final shopping done. Back to Frankfurt for overnight. Farewell dinner tonight at our hotel.

My husband and I just returned from the River Castles tour on the Rhine and we could not be any more delighted.
The ease of traveling on one of Astrid Baur’s tours is phenomenal. She has put great thought and structure into her tours and has made it a wondrous time without any great effort on the travelers part.
She has tweaked her tours to perfection, found just the right hotels and restaurants and visits all the wonderful highlights of the region you are in and gets you there !!
- Patricia Quonce, New York USA
This was a very well organised tour with a small group of seven participants. The tour guide Federico did a fabulous job, ferrying us around, showing us the sights, and educating us about the history of places we visited. The pace was fairly relaxed as the distances to be covered were not great. Five out of the seven nights on tour were spent in the same hotel so there was minimal packing and unpacking to be done. I would highly recommend this tour company for anyone with an interest in history who prefers to travel at a leisurely and enjoyable pace.
- Marie R, Canberra, Australia
I just wanted to let you know what a wonderful time my sister and I had on our third tour with you…. As always, your schedule was well organized and gave us time to see all the sights without feeling rushed. I don't know why other tour companies do not follow your example. Touring with you is a true vacation. We have no worries and feel relaxed when on one of your tours knowing that you will deliver everything you promised. Excellent hotels, good food, wonderful company and knowledgeable tour guides, who could ask for more....

Before You Go
- To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
- Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
- Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
- Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
- If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.
