As a certified nursing assistant, you will provide care related to patients’ daily and routine living needs, also known as activities of daily living or ADLs. You will also be responsible for monitoring the patient’s health progress and providing other medical staff with daily reports of the patient’s health changes.

What are the Duties of a Certified Nursing Assistant?

As a Tennessee certified nursing assistant, you will work with patients requiring basic assistance, such as ensuring patients’ safety take care of themselves while moving around and interacting with their environment. However, you will also attend to patients with life-threatening conditions and elderly patients needing tender care at the end of life stages. Regardless of the type of patients you are attending to, you must understand their specific needs, including their medications, allergies, daily routines, behavioral patterns, and dietary restrictions. Overall, you will be required to know what your patients need to live safely and comfortably when under your care. To successfully perform these duties, CNAs must have great communication skills to help them communicate effectively with the patients and other medical staff.

As a CNA, you will be involved in the routine activities of your patients. Medical staff relies on you to notice and report any patient’s health changes that can lead to major health complications. Therefore, as part of the healthcare team, CNAs play important roles. The job of a CNA will involve the following duties:

For your certificates to remain valid, you must maintain them annually. You will obtain these certifications in various institutions, including memory care, medication aide, wound care, and hospice and palliative care. Licensure Requirements

Since Tennessee has enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact , you won’t need to get a state-specific RN or LPN license to work as a travel nurse there if you already have a multistate license (MSL) in another compact state. You may apply for licensure in Tennessee and work on the MSL for up to 90 days.

If your primary license is in a non-compact state, you must apply for licensure by endorsement. To complete this process, you have to:

  • Get a criminal background check .
  • Request verification of licensure from the state where you were originally licensed. You may use Nursys®   to do this for most states. However, if your original license was obtained in Alabama, California, Hawaii, Louisiana-PN, Oklahoma, or Pennsylvania, you must contact your board for verification instructions.
  • Recent passport-type photograph legibly signed and dated on the front
  • Copy of nursing diploma or transcript (or request an official transcript mailed from the nursing program)
  • Notarized Declaration of Citizenship form with accompanying proof (such as a copy of a driver’s license)
  • Documents related to any criminal conviction, if applicable, along with a letter of explanation

Applicants must be graduates of approved schools of practical or registered nursing and licensed by written examination to become nurses in Tennessee.

The Tennessee Board of Nursing accepts scores from the State Board Test Pool Examination (SBTPE) or the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) as long as they are greater than or equal to the lowest passing scores required.

Allow six weeks for processing of your licensure by endorsement application. Tennessee does not allow temporary licenses , so any travel nursing jobs you take in this state must be far enough out to allow you to submit all the required paperwork and wait for it to be approved.

Licensure Fees

The application fee for licensure by endorsement is $115.

Nurse Licensure Compact Status

Tennessee has been a part of the Nurse Licensure Compact since January 19, 2018.

From the neon lights of Music City to the Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee has it all. Natural beauty, delicious cuisine and vibrant nightlife are never far away.

Ruby Falls near Chattanooga has been named one of the Ten Most Incredible Cave Waterfalls on Earth. The spectacular 145 foot underground waterfall was discovered deep in the heart of Lookout Mountain by explorers in 1928.

No trip to The Volunteer State is complete without a visit to its capital, the heart of country music, Nashville. Even if you aren’t a huge fan of guitars and twang, a trip to the Grand Ole Opry is an amazing experience. This legendary venue has helped launch the careers of countless artists and still showcases current chart toppers and established veterans alike. If you seek lesser-known artists and more intimate venues, Nashville has those in spades as well. Walking down Broadway Street you’ll hear live music coming from each and every bar you pass. Stop in when you hear something you like and you might discover music’s newest star.

For the foodie there is one word to describe Memphis – barbeque! Pork barbecue to be exact. You can find it cooked every way, from saucy chopped meat sandwiches to enormous platters of ribs. Southern cuisine isn’t always for the calorie conscious – but take a cheat day and enjoy mouthwatering Memphis offerings like thin patty burgers and fried chicken!
