Northern Thailand Private Tour & Golden Triangle

Northern thailand private tours & golden triangle, private 6 days 5 nights tour: bangkok – sukothai – golden triangle – chiang rai (or vs.).

tours to northern thailand

Day 1 : Bangkok / Ayuthaya / Sukothai ( L ) The Northern Thailand Private Tour & Golden Triangle starts from your hotel in Bangkok, where your guide and driver will pick you up after breakfast. We leave Bangkok in a northern direction for the former Siamese Capital Ayutthaya. The Historic City of Ayutthaya, founded in 1350, was the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom. It flourished from the 14th to the 18th centuries, during which time it grew to be one of the world’s largest and most cosmopolitan urban areas and a centre of global diplomacy and commerce. Ayutthaya was strategically located on an island surrounded by three rivers connecting the city to the sea. This site was chosen because it was located above the tidal bore of the Gulf of Siam as it existed at that time, thus preventing attack of the city by the sea-going warships of other nations. The location also helped to protect the city from seasonal flooding. You will visit Wat Sri Sampeht and Wat Chai Yai Mongkol Bopith, followed by lunch at a local restaurant, before continuing to Sukothai, the first Capital of Siam.

Overnight at Sukothai.

Day 2 : Sukothai / Chiang Mai ( B, L ) After breakfast, you will visit the historical town of Sukothai with its ruins dating back to the 13th Century. We visit Wat Mahatat, the former Royal Temple and Wat Sri Chum with the 14-meter-high sitting Buddha Statue.

Wat Mahathat or Mahathat Temple is the most important and impressive temple in Sukhothai Historical Park. The temple’s name translates to ‘temple of the great relic’. The temple was founded by Sri Indraditya, between 1292 and 1347 as the main temple of the city as well as the Sukhothai Kingdom. The design is based on a mandala, representing the universe, with a principal stupa, built in 1345 to enshrine relics of the Buddha, surrounded by smaller stupas in eight directions. The main stupa has the shape of a lotus bud, which characterizes Sukhothai architectural arts. Its base is adorned with 168 stuccoed sculptings of Buddhist disciples walking with their hands clasped together in salutation. The eight smaller stupas, of which the four at the corners are in Mon Haripunchai – Lanna style and the four in between, show Khmer influence. At both sides of the main stupa has two nine-metre-tall (30 ft) standing Buddha images called Phra Attharot. The temple also includes an assembly hall (Vihara), and 200 subordinate stupas.

After lunch at a local restaurant, we arrive in Chiang Mai in the late afternoon.

Overnight at Chiang Mai.

tours to northern thailand

Day 3 : Chiang Mai / Wat Doi Suthep Temple ( B, L ) After breakfast, we drive up the Suthep Mountain of Chiang Mai and visit the spectacular Wat Doi Suthep Temple with its golden Chedi.

The Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Temple is considered one of the holiest Buddhist sites in Northern Thailand, thus making it a popular pilgrimage destination. It gets even more visits during the Buddhist holidays of both Visakha Bucha and Makha Bucha. This temple dates as far back as the 14th century and is based on a Thai myth which is full of both mystery and magic. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple is a sacred place among the Thai people, marked by seven-headed serpent statues that go up to the 306 stairs leading to the entrance of the complex. Once you get to the terrace of the Doi Suthep temple, you will love the jaw-dropping view over Chiang Mai from the top.

This inspiring temple is topped with a beautiful monument, which is known as a Chedi. This Chedi is 79 feet tall and completely gold-plated from top to bottom. These golden exteriors are unique for reflecting the sun and giving it a magnificent view on a clear day. At night, the bright golden colour is visible from the entire city below.

After lunch at a local restaurant, we explore the old city of Chiang Mai and visit another historical temple. Overnight at Chiang Mai.

tours to northern thailand

Day 04 / Chiang Mai – Chiang Rai ( B, L ) After breakfast, you got the opportunity to visit an Elephant Sanctuary, where you will experience the elephants in their natural environment (optional excursion).  After lunch, you proceed to Chiang Rai.

Overnight at Chiang Rai.

tours to northern thailand

vDay 05 / Chiang Rai – Golden Triangle ( B, L ) After breakfast, we drive 60 km in northern direction and visit the Border town Mae Sai. This town is the top northern point of Thailand and well known for its border market, selling products from the neighbouring Myanmar (Burma) as well as from China. You will have time to walk over the bustling market and watch people from Burma, as well as the hill tribes, buying and selling products at Mae Sai.

A very attractive option for this morning is the “siamworld.com exclusive” trip along the Thai-Myanmar border, where we visit a Thai Army post with a fantastic view over Myanmar’s mountainous border region. We proceed to the coffee growing Akha villages, where you can try the excellent local grown Arabica coffee at small café’s with amazing view. The tour ends at Mae Sai.

Another interesting place to visit is the Tham Luang Cave , which became known worldwide during the dramatic cave rescue in 2018.

The Kuomintang (KMT) Chinese Village Mae Salong is also one of the most interesting places to visit in Chiang Rai Province. In the mountains west of Chiang Rai’s District Mae Chan, in the border area between Burma and Thailand, the Kuomintang (KMT) settlement Mae Salong is located at over 1,000 m above sea level. These ranges are often called “little Switzerland”. Deep Valleys and almost inaccessible, steep mountains have been the home of the KMT Army for over 60 years.

After lunch, we proceed to Chiang Saen, the heart of the Golden Triangle, where you take a long-tail boat ride across the Mekong River, drive along the Burmese side and visit a village at the Lao side. In the afternoon, return to Chiang Rai. Overnight.

In the early hours, visit one of the most stunning temples in the area, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, which sits high atop Doi Suthep mountain. Then, explore the old center and city walls of Chiang Mai (the city is believed to date back all the way to 1294 A.D.!).

Day 3: Chiang Mai to Pai

High up in the mountains of northern Thailand lies Pai , a beautiful village known for its stunning landscapes and relaxed vibe. It’s a popular backpacking destination, with many visitors arriving on the Mae Hong Son Loop. From Chiang Mai, it’s about a 3-hour journey north to Pai. Wind your way past brightly-colored rice paddies and take in some of Thailand’s most breathtaking views.

How to Get from Chiang Mai to Pai

Pai lies about 3-4 hours from Chiang Mai and makes a great destination to add to your North of Thailand itinerary. You can get to the mountain village in a few different ways.

The easiest way to get to Pai is by renting a car. The roads in Thailand are becoming more and more developed, making it easier to drive between destinations. Having your own transportation also gives you more freedom on your trip.

We recommend to rent a car in Thailand through Sunny Cars with free cancellation and insurance included. Book your rental car here .

By Shared Van

The cheapest way to get to Pai is to book a shared van from Chiang Mai (about 280 THB/8 USD per person). However, this is a very popular option, so we recommend booking a few days in advance during the high season.

By Motorbike

Another, more exhilarating, way to travel to Pai is by motorcycle. This is a great way to see the incredible nature of the north of Thailand as you zigzag your way up into the hills. However, only do this if you feel confident driving, as this is a busy itinerary with many (762!) corners and usually takes a bit longer than Google Maps tells you.

Tip: Don’t want to carry your luggage? There are companies in Chiang Mai who’ll take your bags for you to your next destination.

Motorbike rental starts around 150-400 THB (4.30 – 11.60 USD) per day, depending on the model you choose. There are many rental companies in Chiang Mai, but remember that you’ll always need to leave your passport or a deposit of 3.000 THB (87 USD).

Day 4 – 6: Pai

Spend the next few days of your north-of-Thailand itinerary exploring the village of Pai and its surroundings. Though small, there are plenty of things to do in and around the mountain settlement. From marveling at the stunning Pai Canyon around sunrise to visiting one of the most beautiful temples (Wat Si Don Chai), intricately decorated with gorgeous details. Explore the region by bike, stopping at every viewpoint and looking out over the stunning cloud-covered mountains.

One of the best things to do in Pai is to go rafting or tubing on the river! See the beautiful surrounding nature from a different perspective and meet new friends while you make your way down the waters. Normally, tours drop you a few km upstream, allowing you to float back down (usually 1-2 hours). During the rainy season, when the river level is high, you can go for adrenaline-pumping white water rafting instead.

Entry Fee & Opening Times: 500 THB (14.40 USD) for a guided tour of all three caves + raft boat that you split with three other people. It’s mandatory to hire a guide. The caves are open from 9 AM – 6 PM. Read more about Tham Lod in our complete Pai travel guide .

Day 8: Pai to Chiang Mai

After your small break from the city, head back to Chiang Mai. On your way, make a stop at the Elephant Nature Park , an incredible nature reserve that’s an ethical and responsible sanctuary for animals. This is the only place in Thailand to experience elephants (or another sanctuary recommended by the park’s staff). Watch as the majestic animals interact with one another, happy and healthy as they would in the wild. However, make sure to book ahead, as this experience sells out quickly, especially during peak season.

Day 12: Phu Langka Viewpoint

Leave in the morning and head out to Phu Langka to discover some of the most incredible views in Chiang Rai. This stunning region in Northern Thailand is known for its protected forest and limestone peaks towering out between a blanket of low-hanging clouds. En route, stop at great coffee spots like Paragraph Cafe or Cafe’ine before heading to the Phayao viewpoint .

Remember that not many people speak English in this region. Because of this, it’s best to download the Thai language offline on Google Translate. Although, typically, 4G connections do work in this area.

Getting to Phu Langka

It’s a 3-hour drive to get to the viewpoint. However, this journey is an experience in itself, leading you through beautiful rice paddies, farm fields, and stunning mountain roads. There are a few different routes to get to Phu Langka viewpoint , with the most direct being 2 hours on the highway. However, traffic is much busier here, so we recommend taking one of the alternative roads.

Tip: Bring layers! It’s slightly cooler up in the mountains, so you’ll likely want to add/remove a layer while making your way up through the winding roads.

Renting your own transport means you can explore at your own pace and make up your own itinerary. We rented scooters from B-Rider, and another good option is Nice Rental. You can also opt to rent a car, as many of Thailand’s roads are improving.

Getting Around the North of Thailand

Depending on your preferences, there are a few different ways of getting around the region. In Thailand, getting around by taxi is the most convenient. For example, we mostly used the Grab taxi app to get around Chiang Rai .

Alternatively, you can also hop on a Tuk-Tuk or Songthaew to get around the cities. These are both cheap and convenient options for getting around and can be hailed from the street. Songthaews are the red shared taxis that are more affordable than tuk-tuks but can be a bit slower.

Best Time to Visit Northern Thailand

Thailand is generally hot and humid. However, the weather depends on the region and time of year you visit. The country sees three seasons, with the cool season being the most pleasant time to visit. This period runs from October to February in Northern Thailand, bringing cool air up into the mountains. Due to its elevated position, Pai sees the coolest temperatures in the north.

However, this is also considered the high season in Thailand, so expect bigger crowds and higher prices. For that reason, the perfect months for your north of Thailand itinerary are October – November, just at the end of the rainy season.

Journey Route

Itinerary in detail.

Your private guide will be waiting for you in the airport arrivals area. A comfortable vehicle (non-smoking) with an experienced driver will transfer you directly to your hotel. Your guide will help you to check in. The rest of your day is free to spend at your leisure.

A Palace and Temples

Explore Bangkok's famous highlights in the morning when it is cooler. The landmarks of Bangkok include Wat Pho, the Grand Palace, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and the Temple of Dawn.

Try out Bangkok's different forms of public transport - the public taxi boat, a long-tail boat, and the infamous Thai tuk tuk. This is a fun excursion that gives you a fantastic insight into the capital as well as the local people.

Bangkok's Chinatown is a popular tourist attraction and a food haven for gourmands who flock there to explore the vibrant streetside cuisine, especially after sunset.

Hall of Opium and the Akha & Yao villages

After breakfast, take a private transfer to the airport and fly for about an hour to reach Chiang Rai. Upon your arrival, your private tour guide and driver will welcome you at the airport, then take you straight to the Golden Triangle.

Have lunch in a local Thai restaurant.

Overlooking the Golden Triangle from an archway on a hillside, get some nice photos while you learn about the history of this area from your guide. Then stop at the Hall of Opium, which is a museum that showcases how opium is made, used, and distributed, and how this evil trade ruined the lives of thousands of families living around this area. Discover the lifestyle of northern rural Thai people by visiting two villages: the Akha and Yao villages.

On the way back to Chiang Rai, visit Baan Dam Museum. Informally known as the Black House, Baan Dam Museum is one of the most popular Chiang Rai temples. It is actually more of a museum than a temple although it does contain some shrines. The building and its contents are a masterpiece and collection by the Thai painter and architect Thawan Duchanee.

Wat Rong Khun

After breakfast, visit Wat Rong Khun, better known as the White Temple, it is one of the most recognizable temples in Thailand. It attracts a large number of visitors, both Thai and foreign, making it one of Chiang Rai's most visited attractions. Wat Rong Khun was designed by Chalermchai Kositpipat, a famous Thai visual artist. It is an unconventional and contemporary art exhibit in the style of a Buddhist temple.

Transfer to Chiang Mai and have lunch in a local Thai restaurant. Enjoy your free time in the afternoon.

Unique Temples in Chiang Mai

In the morning, head out from Chiang Mai city for about 20 minutes to reach the famous Doi Suthep. Despite the stunning natural beauty, the main reason many visitors go to Doi Suthep Mountain is to visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Built in 1382, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is one of the most holy Buddhist sites in Thailand .

Learn How to Make Thai Dishes with a Local Family.

In the afternoon, visit a local family. The host will welcome you and walk you through her organic vegetable garden to collect different kinds of herbs and vegetables that will be used in the various Thai dishes you will be preparing. You will learn how to make some of the best home-cooked dishes that you can easily cook for your family when you return home. During the class, in addition to the cooking aspect, you also will sample dishes from the north, northeast, and central regions of Thailand.

A Lanna-Style Temple and the First Elephant Hospital in Thailand

Leave Chiang Mai for Sukhothai and stop in Lampang on the way to visit Wat Phra That Lampang Luang and Friends of the Asian Elephant, which is an elephant hospital.

Founded in the 13th century, Wat Phra That Lampang Luang is one of the most highly revered temples and one of the best examples of Lanna-style architecture in Thailand. It has been preserved in its original state.

Friends of the Asian Elephant was established to protect and conserve the welfare of elephants in Thailand. It provides free medical care for sick and injured elephants, as well as education for keepers.

Upon your arrival in Sukhothai in the late afternoon, enjoy some free time and relax. You may consider walking around the hotel and cycling through the historical park.

Walk in Sukhothai Historical Park

Located in a beautiful setting of lawns, lakes, and trees in north-central Thailand, Sukhothai Historical Park was the capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom. Founded in 1238, Sukhothai was the first unified kingdom of Siam. The kingdom flourished for 200 years, during which time its capital at Old Sukhothai was a highly influential political and religious center. Sukhothai began to decline in the 14th century as Ayutthaya's power was on the rise. The most important sights in the historical park are Wat Si Chum, Wat Si Sawai, Wat Mahathat, and Wat Sa Si.

A Local Experience of Making a Thai Krathong (Water Lantern)

Thailand's most famous Loy Krathong (Lantern Festival) began in Sukhothai. So during your stay in Sukhothai, there is no better way to appreciate the local culture than to make a Krathong floating lantern yourself.

Spend time with local Thai people learning how to make a traditional Thai and Sukhothai style Krathong. During the lantern-making process, you will learn how locals use natural materials such as banana leaves and stems to make a beautiful lantern in many different shapes. You will also learn about the history of the lantern festival and how the local Sukhothai people celebrate it. Once it is dark, release your floating lantern on a pond or river and don't forget to make a wish.

After breakfast, you will have a private transfer to Sukhothai Airport, fly to Bangkok, and connect with your international flight to your home country.

The 7 Best Places to Visit in Northern Thailand

tours to northern thailand

 TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

The mountainous region of Northern Thailand tops many people's list of favorites for where to go in Thailand . Many of the region's top destinations share an outwardly positive vibe throughout the year . Culture inspired by Lanna, Shan, Karen, and other indigenous ethnic groups in the region provides a noticeably friendlier atmosphere, making visiting that much more pleasant.

The Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Myanmar , and Laos meet, doesn’t just produce opium anymore. Thanks to the slightly cooler climate, you can enjoy some indulgences in Northern Thailand that are sometimes difficult to locate elsewhere in the country: real coffee, tea plantations, vineyards, and strawberries. Even the festivals are bigger in the north. Loi Krathong/Yi Peng and Songkran (the Thai New Year water fight celebration) are celebrated with more gusto than anywhere else in Thailand.

Note: Although Isan—Thailand’s largest region—occupies 20 sizable provinces that border Laos and Cambodia , it is traditionally considered “Northeastern Thailand” rather than “Northern Thailand” because of cultural differences.

Any discussion of interesting places to visit in Northern Thailand has to begin with the northern capital of Chiang Mai . Most destinations are within an easy striking distance of the city.

Chiang Mai (pronounced: “ch-ae-ng mye”) means “New City” in the Lanna language. Despite the prevalence of elephants in the local culture, the name has nothing to do with chang (elephant), properly pronounced “ch-ah-ng” in the Thai language. Why the New City? Chiang Mai took over Chiang Rai’s job as capital in 1296.

To bust another popular myth, Chiang Mai is not the second largest city in Thailand as many travelers think—but it does serve as the cultural heart of the country. The city offers the classic winning trifecta that attracts travelers: friendly locals, great food, and affordable prices. With the usual amount of frugality, you get more bang for the travel buck in Chiang Mai—and Northern Thailand in general—than in Bangkok or the islands.

Chiang Mai’s Old City is a perfect square with all the defenses necessary to survive as capital in the 14th century. Elephant-proof moat, giant gates, and a defensive wall with brick ramparts are still standing. The labyrinth of confusing streets and passages in the interior of the Old City hides plenty of enjoyable finds, including a high density of temples . But the action isn’t all contained within the moat. Some of Chiang Mai’s most interesting places lie outside of the Old City, just within scooter range.

If you don’t mind crowds, the weekend markets are a fun spectacle of socializing, nibbling, and shopping that attracts just as many locals as tourists. The markets are good for sampling local treats and grabbing inexpensive souvenirs, but you’ll still need to negotiate .

Fun fact: Notice the high density of MacBook Air laptops in the many cafes? That’s because Chiang Mai is home to a large community of location-independent entrepreneurs and ex-pats who call themselves “digital nomads.” They share cafes and coworking spaces alongside online English teachers, bloggers, and others who earn a living with a laptop. Even when dial-up modems were screeching for connections and online work wasn’t possible, Chiang Mai appealed to artists, writers, and long-term travelers interested in dropping anchor for a while.

A bit less than three hours north of Chiang Mai, Pai is a much smaller, chilled-out, riverside option for getting away from concrete. Although still mostly green, Pai’s popularity and its development have grown tremendously in the last decade. So far, the charm has survived. Travelers of all budgets and nationalities cram into minivans to visit Pai . A surprising number come and decide not to leave.

But don’t let outdated guidebooks that still refer to Pai as a “quiet, bohemian town” fool you. Somehow, despite the size, the backpacker-oriented nightlife rages later than Chiang Mai’s, and there is an emphasis here on health and wellness—perfect for curing any next-day regrets. You’ll find a high concentration of vegetarian and organic food (much of which is grown nearby), juice shops, and options for a healthier lifestyle. Yoga retreats, tai chi, qi gong, meditation centers, holistic healing workshops—Pai offers a lot of opportunities for improving health and knowledge.

The city of Chiang Rai is an anomaly among the places to go to in Northern Thailand. With a population of only around 75,000 people, it’s certainly smaller than Chiang Mai. But the city is buzzing with commerce, universities, and daily life—which unfortunately includes plenty of traffic.

Most tourists are drawn for a short visit to Chiang Rai , thanks in large part to the impressive creations of Thawan Duchanee and Chalermchai Kositpipat, two renowned Thai artists. After enjoying their contributions to the city, you can escape to the serene Khun Korn Forest Park, a worthwhile 45 minutes away, to cool down under a waterfall.

Until his death in 2014, Thawan actually lived in his otherworldly masterpiece—an estate known as Baan Dam (the Black House). Meant to be a portrayal of hell, the grounds and buildings of the Black House are adorned with animal bones and demonic art. Exploring definitely bestows a dark sense of wonder.

On the other end of that spectrum, Chalermchai Kositpipat’s work Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple) is a visually stunning Buddhist temple that somehow integrates religious themes with Hollywood and Hello Kitty. "The Matrix," "Terminator," and "Superman"—along with many other works of fiction—receive shout-outs in the mesmerizing murals. The White Temple will cheer you up a bit after having explored the Black House; that is, if you don’t pay too much attention to the rejected souls writhing in agony before the gates of heaven.

Another famous work from Chalermchai is Chiang Rai’s golden clock tower set prominently in a roundabout in the center of town. Unveiled in 2008 as a tribute to the King of Thailand, the clock tower comes alive every hour—as one would expect an ornate clock tower to do. But visitors who watch at 7 p.m., 8 p.m., and 9 p.m. get an unexpected treat. No spoilers here, but you’ll feel as though you just got sucked into Walt Disney World for a few minutes!

Visiting tip: Don’t expect Chiang Rai to be a serene escape from Chiang Mai, or you may be disappointed! The streets are perpetually clogged with drivers who think that sounding the horn will improve the situation.

Mae Hong Son

Although you’ll have to brave well over 1,000 twists, turns, and cutbacks on the six-hour drive from Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son is definitely among the best places in Northern Thailand. The small town is about as close as you can get to Myanmar without getting into trouble. Shan cultural influences are apparent in the food and attitude. Many Burmese people call Mae Hong Son home.

Remoteness is both a blessing and a curse; Mae Hong Son doesn’t often get included in itineraries for Northern Thailand. It’s usually relegated to being a stopover for travelers exploring the region by motorbike . The popular “Mae Hong Son Loop” is a scenic route popular with motorbikers that takes four to five days to complete.

Mae Hong Son has all the enjoyable options of the other places to visit in Northern Thailand: temples, waterfalls, night markets, caves, and trekking to hill tribe villages . There are just enough hostels, guesthouses, and cafes, most dotted around a small lake. The town is easily walkable.

Located around 90 minutes north of Chiang Mai, Chiang Dao is the place to go for picturesque limestone cliffs and Thailand’s third-highest mountain, Doi Chiang Dao (7,136 feet). Although the mountain is barely a pebble when matched up against the massifs in Asia’s Himalayas, Chiang Dao is the premier place for bird-watching in Thailand. Over 350 species, many of which are rare, can be spotted.

For travelers not so interested in birding, there are caves and hot springs all around the city to check out. If visiting during Thailand’s “winter” season , you’ll definitely appreciate the hot springs: Chiang Dao can get chilly!

The town is located very close to Pha Daeng National Park, an area popular for its bamboo forests in a climate that isn’t as sweltering as the rest of Thailand. Karen hill tribe villages are nearby.

Hiding among the other lesser-known places to visit in Northern Thailand, Lampang stays fairly low on the tourism radar. Perhaps it’s because Lampang is south of Chiang Mai (90 minutes) rather than north like Pai, Chiang Rai, and Mae Hong Son.

But Lampang isn’t exactly a sleepy village. It’s the third largest town in Northern Thailand. Overnight buses and trains between Bangkok and Chiang Mai often stop in Lampang—it’s directly along the way.

One thing that makes Lampang “different” is that there aren’t any sputtering tuk-tuks clogging the streets . Lampang is the last real place in Thailand where horse-drawn carriages are still a thing, but they’re on the decline. The fleet of songthaews (covered pickup trucks) circulating town is a more practical solution for getting around.

The best time to visit Lampang is on Saturday or Sunday when the weekend market is thriving. Ceramics from the region are a popular item to purchase. The paper made from elephant dung makes a very unique gift for squeamish friends at home.

Many tourists—Thai and Western—are drawn to Lampang by the only government-owned elephant camp in Thailand. The Thai Elephant Conservation Centre has been around since 1993 and is home to 50 or so elephants, along with an elephant nursery/hospital.

Note: Although the elephant center is government-run, it is under criticism for forcing elephants to perform shows and give rides—practices stopped by many private centers.

Doi Inthanon

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

If Doi Chiang Dao isn't tall enough for you, you can trek to 8,415 feet on Thailand's highest peak, Doi Inthanon. The weather will feel especially cool as you explore the temple near the summit and take in limestone scenery.

Doi Inthanon is located around two hours west of Chiang Mai. The Thai National Observatory, a large astronomical telescope, is perched on top.

The mountain has its own national park, Doi Inthanon National Park . It's one of the busiest in the country and is a hotspot for locals and tourists alike. Visitors can enjoy hiking or camping, or, if you want to skip the trek up, you can drive up the main road to get to the highest peak. Be prepared for beautiful views and even a few waterfalls.

What is the recommended travel time for northern Thailand?

November to February is the recommended travel time.

November-February: The Loy Krathong Festival in November and the Flower Festival in February bring tourists around the world as well as the locals. The northern hemisphere is in winter while Chiang Mai is mild and pleasant at around 20°C (68 ℉).

March-May: The Songkran Festival (Water-splashing Festival), April 13-15, is the biggest festival in Chiang Mai, and airfare and hotels are very expensive during these days. It is a hot time with high temperatures reaching 40°C (104 ℉).

June to October: Although it is the rainy season and the amount of rain is really not small, it usually rains only once a day and ends soon, so it basically does not affect travel, so just bring your rain gear. Hotels often have discounts during this time.

What are the must-sees?

White Temple - a special one among all temples in Thailand

Golden Triangle: a place once known worldwide for its drug trade

Mekong River: a river connecting 6 countries

Chiang Rai's farthest north: the border town of Mae Sai

What should I wear in norther Thailand?

The weather in northern Thailand is different from that in Bangkok and Phuket in the south, as it is colder at night and during the cool season.

During the day, wearing normal summer clothes is fine; it is also recommended to bring sun protection equipment such as hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.

Between November and March, the nights are cooler, so it is recommended to wear a long-sleeved jacket to avoid catching a cold.

What are the most popular attractions in northern Thailand?

Are there any recommended routes for norther areas?

Bangkok - Chiang Mai - Sukhothai - Ayutthaya - Bangkok

Bangkok - Ayutthaya - Chiang Mai - Chiang Rai - Bangkok

How can I transport to northern Thailand?

By air: There are two airports in northern Thailand: Chiang Mai International Airport and Chiang Rai International Airport

In Bangkok, the two airports, Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang Airport, both have direct flights to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. The difference is that the former is more expensive and the latter is relatively cheap.

By train: (Bangkok - Chiang Mai)

Bangkok's Hua Lamphong Railway Station has a dozen trains a day to Chiang Mai, both Special express and Rapid. For backpackers, second class sleepers (air conditioned and fan) are the best choice. The Special Express1 and Special Express13 are recommended, both departing in the evening and arriving in the morning. Thailand's sleeper trains are more affordable, with good facilities and service.

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

What are the toilets like in Thailand?

Squat toilets are most common in Thailand, although western-style flushable toilets can be found in larger hotels and some tourist areas. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQI travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Bangkok baby, your adventure begins! So you’ve made it to this busy city, and you’ll have the first day to settle in and relax, meet your TruFam, and go explore the local area, whatever ya fancy. In the evening, it’s time for our welcome dinner at one of our favourite restaurants on the one & only Khao San Road!

kanchanaburi & river kwai

A group photo by the river Kwai in Kanchanaburi Thailand

So you know the film Bridge Over River Kwai? Well, today that’s where we're going, River Kwai! Before we head off to the river, we hop off to do some shopping and not at just any regular market, but a FLOATING one! Sick right? Once we’ve done our browsing the market by long-tail boat, it’s off to Kanchanaburi now! When we have arrived, we get another boat and cruise down the River Kwai enjoying the sight of the bridge (an insta worthy moment fo’ sho’). It’s sunset o’clock and what a better place to watch the sunset than the bridge over River Kwai! Get those poses ready for all the 10/10 shots you’re going to get.

erawan waterfalls

A group shot on a rock at Erawan falls in Thailand

Imagine, a 7 tier, crystal clear blue waterfall surrounded by lush greenery, sounds unreal right! Erawan falls, just an hour away from Kanchanaburi, is basically what you imagine paradise to look like. Something you would expect to see on the television and not in real life, but it IS real life! We know TLC said don’t go chasing waterfalls but ya know, I think we can be excused this once because just look at how beautiful it is? Make sure you have your swimmers as you’ll want to take a dip, and check this out, there are 7 tiers for you to take a dip in. Don’t say we don’t spoil ya! We’ll have some lunch at the waterfalls, gotta stay hydrated and energised from all that walking & swimming! Then we head back to Kanchanaburi, where you can either chill by the pool or explore the town before we meet for dinner and drinks!

ancient ruins & history

A group shot at the reclining buddha in Ayutthaya Thailand

Today you have the morning free before we hit the road again! So choose to spend this morning how you please, whether that’s by the pool or exploring the town. Next, we are off to Ayutthaya, an ancient capital city, that is dripping with culture and history! We’ll hop on some bikes and cycle around the world heritage site, giving us a 10/10 view, we’ll also learn about the fascinating history of Ayutthaya and of course, the kingdom of Siam which is what Thailand used to be called (fun fact for ya!). Time to grab a bit to eat and then it’s all aboard the night train to Chiang Mai! The train is comfortable, you get your own bed with pillows and covers, comfort is key! So it shouldn’t be too hard to get a descents night sleep ready to take on a new place in the morning! Chiang Mai, we’re coming for you.

temples & culture

A group photo at the temple Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai Thailand

We check into our guesthouse which is ideally situated between the old & new areas of Chiang Mai (winning), you’ll have some time to relax by the pool or do some exploring and check out the oldest temple in Chiang Mai which is literally right opposite our accommodation (winning x2!). Now it’s time to visit the most famous and possibly the most beautiful temple in Chiang Mai, Wat Pra Maha Doi Sutthep. The views are incredible, situated high up on the mountain, you’ll get a panoramic view of the city. Trust, you’ll feel on top of the world, literally. Once you’ve taken your snaps of the insane views and got some for the gram (it’s gotta be done), you have the afternoon free to do whatever you would like, before we meet later on in time for dinner!

village home stay, trek & waterfall

Group photo during the jungle trek in Northern Thailand

Did someone say TruExclusive? Hell yeah, we did! You won’t find this experience anywhere else. We are off to do one of the most popular activities in Northern Thailand, a trek through the jungle. The trek doesn’t require a high level of fitness, but it is a bit of a challenge SO beers will be very well deserved afterwards! We’ll spend one night in a village homestay so that you can experience what life is like for the many traditional hill tribes of Northern Thailand, which you’ll see their lives have not changed a huge amount for generations. Expect to see all kinds of nature and wildlife when on the trek, maybe even a waterfall or two, amazing scenes!

Note: This trek does not require a high level of fitness but is a bit of a challenge, so you’ll definitely have earned the next few beers we crack open when we get back to Chiang Mai!

elephant sanctuary and bamboo rafting

A group photo on the bamboo raft along the river in Northern Thailand

Rise and shine! Enjoy your morning in the jungle before it’s time we head back to Chiang Mai, but of course, we have a trick up our sleeve, and we are using a much better mode of transport, bamboo rafts! Sick right? We’ll float down the river where you'll even get the chance to see some Elephants - what could be better? This is a once in a lifetime experience, a memory you’ll cherish forever, no doubt! Once we get back to Chiang Mai, we'll rest up in time to continue our Northern adventure tomorrow!

zipline through the jungle

A group taking part in the zip line in Chiang Mai Thailand

The adventure capital of Thailand (some may say), Chiang Mai! Today is one of our favourite activities, that is very popular with tourists, and that’s ziplining through the jungle! This is going to get your heart racing and adrenaline pumping, you’ll practically be flying through the jungle while looking down at it all (if you dare)! Throw in a few rope bridges and abseils, and that’s experiencing the jungle in a way you never could by foot! You can thank us later, once you’ve made all your friends and fam jealous, obvs. This is truly an unforgettable experience!

chilled morning and drive to pai

Night markt in Bangkok - people walking by the shops

After an excting few days this morning you'll have the chance to chill, read a book, grab a cocktail, do whatever floats your boat! In the afternoon, grab your bags because we will hop on a bus to the hippie town of Pai! Just 3 hours outside of Chiang Mai, a very popular backpacker destination, and we can see why! Filled with cool retro bars, market stalls, excellent food and wonderful people from all walks of life. Ahh, the life of Pai (sorry we had to!)

caves, canyons & hot springs

A group photo at Erawan falls in Thailand

Day trippin’ time! Today we’ll head out to see some of Pai’s highlights, and it’s surrounding areas! Starting at the biggest cave in Thailand, Lod cave, we’ll hike through the main chambers and then take a bamboo raft along the river which runs through the cave (depending on season and accessibility). It’s like something out of a movie, incredible stuff! It’s now time to give your muscles a break, as we head to the hot springs which are situated in the jungle and are heated by geothermal activity. Take a dip in the crystal clear water, treat yourself to a clay mask and just have the ultimate relaxation session in the warm temperatures. We’ll finish this incredible day at Pai Canyon which means even more amazing views of the surrounding mountains and jungle, and even better, we’ll be there at sunset! So take yo’ pics and take in the insane view before heading back to Pai town. In the evening we’ll head to a nice restaurant and a few chilled bars where we can mingle with other backpackers too. After all, we deserve it after the day of sightseeing we’ve had!

pai chill day

girls in bikinis sat by large pool in Thailand

Chill day lets goooo! After a bit of a lie-in, the day is to be spent as you please, cool down and relax by the pool or if you're feeling a little hungover, get some zzzz's in. Spend your day loungings, swimming, playing a few games or reading a good book! The choice is yours. Once we’ve had our relaxation fill, we'll head for dinner and drinks and see where the night takes us.

chiang mai cooking class

tours to northern thailand

This morning it’s time to head back to Chiang Mai! We hope you’re ready to become the new Thai Masterchef as we are off to a cooking school to learn about some of Thailands traditional dishes and then have a go at making them ourselves! Most of Thailands delicious food comes from the North, so there’s no better way than to learn from the masters themselves right? First, we’ll head to the market where our guides and teachers will show us how to select the freshest & tastiest ingredients, they have that insider knowledge ya feel? Now it’s time for us to turn those ingredients we picked into some tasty meals! Don’t fret, you’ll be shown how to cook the recipes step by step! Now for the best bit, tasting what you’ve cooked, so make sure you’re paying attention when cooking! A fantastic experience, and you’ll get to go home with new recipes and new skills! Winner winner chicken dinner (Quorn if your veggie)!

chiang mai canyon

A group photo at the grand canyon in Chiang Mai Thailand

So we all know the Grand Canyon but do you know of Chiang Mai’s very own Grand Canyon? Well, if not, don’t worry as you’ll get to know! This is an old excavation site, where they would dig out sand for building etc. However, now it is a man-made lagoon which has turned into an adult playground, we LOVE to see it! There are countless of slides, floating chairs to lay in, tubes and then for the brave-hearted have a go at cliff jumping, deep water soloing or climbing on their climbing wall. Take yo’ pick! There’s a restaurant there on-site, so we can grab our lunch, refresh and energise ourselves! In the evening, we head out into Chiang Mai our final dinner and drinks *cue sad song*.

chilled checkout

Boat trip along the river Kwai in Kanchanaburi Thailand

Today is the day your Northern Adventure comes to an end (We know, we are sad too)! You’ll be leaving with some unforgettable memories and of course, your TruFam aka friends for life! If you are continuing your adventure, then our TruNinjas will be more than happy to help with any onward travel! If you have a little longer to spend travelling and exploring then check out our Laos explorer or if you’d like to carry on in Thailand, then why not head south on our Thailand Experience? It’s been real, TruFam!
