ToursByLocals Review: Can You Trust Their Tour guides? [2024]

ToursByLocals Review: Can You Trust Their Tour guides? [2024]

Here's a rundown of the tour guide company, ToursByLocals, including what they do, what their features are, and if it's worth the money. Read on to find out more!

tours by locals paris reviews

When you’re planning a trip to a new city or country, you want to make sure you get the most out of your visit by finding the best things to do, places to stay, and restaurants to eat at.

If that's the case, then read all about them in our travel blog collection here. Here at  Pilot , we’re all about helping you plan your trip and make the best of your time abroad.

However, if you're not the type that wants to plan out every detail of your trip, why not get a tour guide instead? We know that for many people, a great way to get to know a city is to take part in an organized travel tour, whether that’s as part of a large group or in a more private and personalized setting. Whether it's joining a tour on a yacht or hopping on a Busabout , tour guides comes in many shapes or forms!

There are many ways to find local guides to a city or town, and  ToursByLocals  is one of them. But what exactly is it, and how does it work? Read our comprehensive guide to find out!

What Is ToursByLocals?

ToursByLocals is an easy-to-use website that provides you, the traveler, with access to local tourist guides in cities all over the world. It currently operates in 193 countries and has more than 4,500 guides that you can connect with, in locations ranging from Barcelona, Paris, Rome, and Bern to places a little further afield, like Tokyo, Iceland, and even the South Island of New Zealand.

Tourbylocals logo

The tour guides are all local people that just so happen to have expert knowledge of the ins and outs of their hometown. Taking a tour from a local is one of the best ways to learn more about historical events that took place in a certain city, explore specific neighborhoods, or just find out about the best things to do while you’re traveling.

As well as personal tours of cities, ToursByLocals offers  shore excursions , allowing you to get a local’s perspective of any of the stops on your cruise.

At the moment, you can even book virtual tours with ToursByLocals if you’re craving a travel fix but can’t get away right now—perfect for armchair tourism during the pandemic! If you book and attend a live virtual tour, which will still be run by local people, you’ll also receive the money you’ve spent as a voucher that you can spend on an in-person tour when you’re next free to travel. Score!

Is ToursByLocals an Accredited Tour Company?

Now, you might be wondering why ToursByLocals doesn’t come up if you’re searching for top-rated tour companies in Europe, or if you’ve been googling the best US travel and tour options. There’s a pretty simple explanation for this: ToursByLocals isn’t actually a tour company.

Instead, it acts as a marketplace that gives you access to individual guides who run their own tours. All tours listed on the website are private tours, and if you can’t find what you’re looking for, you can message guides to see if they can customize a tour to better suit your needs.

What Is a Personal Tour?

One of the main benefits of using ToursByLocals is that you’ll be receiving a personal tour rather than a group tour. We’ve all seen group tours on our travels: Hordes of people following a slightly tired-looking guide who’s carrying some kind of brightly colored umbrella or flag, speaking in hushed tones into a microphone and not stopping to answer any questions along the way. Sounds great!

A personal tour is not like this. Instead, it’s one that you and your travel buddies (whether that’s your family, your partner, or your friends) book privately with a guide. The benefits of a personal tour are numerous:

  • You can customize the tour based on your own interests
  • You’re free to ask as many questions as you like without feeling like you’re bogarting the guide!
  • You can book it for a time and date that suits you, making it easier to fit in with your other travel plans
  • You could gain access to certain tourist spots that may be closed to large groups
  • You avoid having to interact with  that one person— you know the type—who thinks they know more than the guide!

Instead of booking onto a tour that’s targeted at large groups, which can be impersonal and pretty rigid in structure, a personal tour allows you more freedom. It gives you the chance to get to know a city however you   want, making it easier to find your way around and uncover the coolest parts of town.

How Do I Find a Private Tour Guide?

Using ToursByLocals to find a private tour guide is easy. Sign up or log in to your account, then search by location. Add the dates you want to go on a tour, then browse the options and book whichever one interests you most.

Choosing a location on a map for travel Toursbylocals

You can also contact the tour guide before booking to arrange customization if you’re looking for something more personal to your interests.

Once you’ve got everything organized, just pay ahead of time and attend your tour. It couldn’t be simpler.

What If Something Goes Wrong?

Sometimes when you’re traveling, things go wrong. Maybe your cruise ship has illness on board and has been told it can’t dock, meaning your planned shore excursion is a no-go. Maybe you’ve had to cancel your whole trip because of a family issue. Or maybe you’ve just changed your mind! Can you still get your money back?

The ToursByLocals cancelation policy is pretty fair. If you cancel 15 days or more before the tour was due to start, you can get all your money back. Nice. You’ll also get a refund if certain unforeseeable events take place—this includes the ship being told it can’t dock.

If you’re booking ahead of time but aren’t completely sure whether you’re definitely going to attend the tour, the website also offers a more flexible (but more expensive) cancelation policy, known as the “Any Reason” policy. If you’ve paid extra for this, you can cancel for any reason at all, as long as you do so before the tour starts.

How Do I Become a Local Tour Guide?

If you want to  become a tour guide  for ToursByLocals, you can  apply  through the ToursByLocals website. You have to be legally permitted to give tours in your area (but this doesn’t mean you have to be a licensed tour guide—“passionate locals” are also encouraged to apply).

If your application is successful, you’ll be invited to take part in an interview process to make sure you’re suitable for giving tours, and to check your English skills. You’ll also have to undergo a background check.

If you pass all the stages of the application process, you can start selling your tours on ToursByLocals.

Do Tour Guides Make Good Money?

Tour guides that offer their services through ToursByLocals can charge as much as they think is appropriate for their tours. The company takes a percentage of every dollar earned, but you can factor this into your pricing when you set up your profile and tour offerings.

Tour guides making money

Remember to make sure you’re getting paid a fair amount, but you’ll also want to ensure your prices aren’t so expensive that they’re off-putting to potential customers!

Is ToursByLocals Worth It?

It’s easy enough to find and book private tours with ToursByLocals, but is it really worth it? The costs of private tours can be high, and with guides setting their own prices, you could end up paying huge amounts for a private tour.

It all depends on what you’re looking for from your vacation. Some people prefer group tours, as they give them the chance to meet new people and get a basic overview of a city or a particular sight. For others, it makes more sense to book a private tour because it’s easier to get a personalized or customizable experience. At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference.

I'd recommend looking at different options and reading up on specific reviews of that individual tour operator before making the purchase!

My Rating: 4.1/5

  • Local experiences
  • Curated tours
  • Many destinations
  • Experiences vary per guide

This was amazing

This was amazing! Valdemar picked up my husband and I to enjoy the PR1 hike, and then took us on an incredible tour of the north part of the island. The entire experience was excellent. Val took us to places we never would have been able to find on our own; it was so refreshing to experience the life of a local. He introduced us to scenery, villages, markets, foods, drink, roads and loads of history and information about Madeira. On top of it Val is a great human being, and someone we enjoyed hanging out with.

Andreea was a wonderful guide who was knowledgeable and relatable.

Andreea was a wonderful guide who was comfortable teaching history, architecture, culture and food. We did her "foodie" tour. She provided a great intro to Bucharest. She has several other focused tours which I wish we'd have time for. You won't be disappointed if you book a tour with her.

Ichi was a fantastic tour guide

Ichi was a fantastic tour guide. He was so receptive to our family's interests during our communication before our trip. Ichi was prepared for the entire 2 day tour. He had great suggestions, was extremely knowledge and had fun ideas. Ichi put great effort in keeping our interest as well as my two teenage kids. He took us to some local and hidden gems where we had the best ramen and got real Japanese treasures instead of touristy foods and souvenirs. Our entire family had a great time! Thanks Ichi!

Great introduction to Seoul.

Our guide, Young, gave us a great introduction to Korean food, history and culture. As a Seoul native and PhD student in Korean history he offered a wealth of information and tirelessly answered our many questions with thoughtful answers. In his personal car he took us all around Seoul to the best views, the most interesting places and hidden gems. His English is very good and his pleasant demeanour made it an enjoyable day spent with him. I highly recommend Young for anyone needing an introduction to Seoul and Korea.

Marco Puglia is an excellent tour guide…

Marco Puglia is an excellent tour guide and driver! He is very knowledgeable about Sorrento, Naples, Amalfi and Positano! He geared our trip around our elderly family members and we had a lovely time! He made reservations at a quaint, quiet restaurant in Ravella with great food and spectacular views! We had a great day with Marco!

Copenhagen Tour

Bo was the best possible guide for my first-ever visit to Copenhagen. He came well-prepared, with a plan and an itinerary to show me the sites I shouldn't miss, and to take me to places connected to some of my particular interests (Soren Kierkegaard). He's smart and interesting and I so enjoyed spending time with him and talking to him. It rained most of the day but I had a delightful time. I'd highly recommend a tour with Bo.

A day of insight and amazement

Our whole day tour of the temple complex at Angkor with Sotath T was a highlight of our travels in Vietnam and Cambodia. He is a remarkably knowledgeable person with deep understanding of the temple sites and their religious and historic origins As two well seasoned travellers in their 70s Sotath took care to go at a pace that suited us on a particularly hot day. As former teachers we were impressed by his excellent English and his ability to explain the nuances of Buddhism and the history of Cambodia A+ on all counts highly recommended

We were in Cabo San Lucas and signed up…

We were in Cabo San Lucas and signed up for 2 private tours with Daniel P. Both tours were fantastic. Daniel has extensive information on the area history. His tours are informative and fun, blending local finds with places of interest. I would highly recommend Daniel and Tours by Locals.

Hard to pronounce, easy to enjoy!

What an amazing experience!! The only thing blue about our Tangier-to-Chefchaouen trip with Hamid were the vibrant colors of the city itself -- rightfully known as the "Blue City." I had joined my granddaughter in Morocco during her Semester at Sea port call, and with two of her friends, we left the day in Hamid's hands. He was very professional, seemed to know everyone, and (with his iPhone at the ready) impressed me with his knowledge of U.S. history ranging from Theodore Roosevelt to Hillary Clinton.

A Remarkable Tour of Charleston with Kay!

On March 27 Kay took 5 of us on a private tour: S. Carolina's Charm and Grace. She is an exceptional guide - extremely knowledgeable of the area's history and current events, evolution, horticulture and seemed to know everyone in town! We loved being with Kay and learned so much about Charleston from her. She loved questions, was so engaged, and wanted the tour to cover our interests. We walked, explored, laughed and had a most wonderful time. It was the highlight of our stay. We highly recommend Kay!

Ipo was great

Ipo was great! Picked us up where convenient for us at our VRBO - door to door service. She was early and waiting. Saw the sights. A good combination of hiking, swimming - which my adult sons enjoyed, and sitting comfortably in her vehicle as we toured around listening to her local island perspective of things, and traveling off the beaten trail at times. Found us the fresh squeezed juice that we wanted and we returned on our own the next day for more. Her restaurant recommendations were spot on.

Cape Town Wine Country Tour with Ligia

We could not be happier with our tour from Ligia. Kind, personable, knowledgeable and accommodating, she delivered everything we had hoped for and more in our wine country tour. In her very comfortable car, she took six of us to four small wineries in the Stellenbosch area - each lovelier than the last (a big plus as I don't drink alcohol) and all free of big bus crowds. The wines and the presentations were much enjoyed, as was the lunch. A fabulous day, thanks to Ligia. We'd book her again in a heartbeat

First experience with ToursByLocals will be my last!

My first experience with ToursByLocals will most certainly be my last. In February 2024 I booked a tour of Orkney for a one day visit in August. The guide cancelled just 24 hours before our arrival and no alternative was available / offered by ToursByLocals. Whilst I appreciate that local guides may have urgent issues which could alter their plans at the last minute it was quite unacceptable to leave us with no options. I had to waste a significant part of my day on board a cruise ship searching for, and making contact with, another guide. Fortunately the lady I found was absolutely superb and at nearly half the price of my original booking! It begs the question - if I could find another guide, albeit one who was not registered with ToursByLocals, why couldn't they at least have pointed me in the direction of possible alternatives. Never again!

DDay Beaches with Nic

As Americans it has been on our bucket list to go to the D-day beaches and our tour with Nic far exceeded our expectations. Nic knew all the history, was knowledgeable, informative and very personable. He picked us up as promised and we visited Omaha Beach, the cemetery, the bunkers and other historical spots all of which Nic was well versed in. We also enjoyed a beautiful seaside lunchtime meal before returning to our hotel. I can't express how wonderful our day touring was. Thank you Nic - Merci

Great Off The Beaten Path Bai Tu Long Excursion

David was worried we wouldn't like the boat coming from a Seabourn ship since the description said rustic but we had a blast. It was raining and David actually stopped on the way to the junk boat to buy us long ponchos since our rainproof jackets were too short. Lunch on board was phenomenal and every single item was delicious! We hardly saw another person on this tour. David was friendly, speaks great English, is very patient, responsive, and gave us a wonderful experience that we will always remember.

Allie is an exceptional guide

Allie is an exceptional guide. We had a full day tour with him and were super impressed with his amazing knowledge and his professionalism. He made our Cape Town visit a great experience. Being a tour guide is his passion. He won't be happy until you are completely satisfied with the product you expect. He has so many contacts in the community that he will find a way to give you that little extra something that will make your tour better than expected. You can't go wrong with Allie.

Tommy in Thailand!

Tommy is amazing - we had the best time touring Bangkok with him. His personality and sense of humor is infectious. Tommy is like a local celebrity, everyone seemed to know him since he gives tours so frequently. Tommy knew all the best spots for authentic food, which we loved. He also knew the best ways to navigate the tourists' attractions so we could best avoid crowds - a big plus! Spending two days with Tommy is something we'll never forget - he made our time in Bangkok unforgettable.

I really enjoyed the tour with Danny

I really enjoyed the tour with Danny. He is very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the area. He dared this not-so-easy hike with me in rainy and slippery weather (unlike some other guides I saw there who wouldn't follow their guests :-) ) He is very low-key and soft-spoken, which I really appreciated. He is also very flexible with plan-making. I highly recommend Danny for Dominica sight-seeing.

Wayan is simply the BEST guide in Bali

Wayan is simply the BEST guide in Bali! I'm always skeptical when someone looks too good to be true, but this time I trusted that the universe put us together, and it all came together beautifully. For each of us, the highlight of our day was going to Wayan's family home and learning how families live in Bali. He opened his family compound to us and treated us to coffee, tea, and cake while we met his family (especially his lovely, gracious wife) and learned about some of the cultural arts of Bali as well.

We had a terrific day with Miquel

We had a terrific day with Miquel, who was super knowledgeable, engaging and fun. We walked all around both Tossa and Girona, and left with a better understanding of the history of both towns, and current life in Spain. Miquel keeps it real, and will engage in whatever topics are of interest, including the rise of tourism in the local economy, and local sports teams (Barca and Girona football, and Barca basketball). Would recommend to anyone.

Paris Tour Guide - Ellen L.

I am an experienced tour guide and a friendly Franco-American who has lived in Paris for 33 years. Travelers feel comfortable with me due to my fluency in both English & French. I am a trained historian and my tours are well researched, well documented and well presented on high tech material (tablet), a multi-media experience using archival photos, video footage (and when appropriate sound). My tours are not for the first time traveler - I could never compete with the big bucket tours that go to the Eiffel Tower. Instead, I market tours for those who have already seen the sights and want to see Paris beyond the monuments, the real Paris with its private courtyards, quiet cobblestoned streets & hidden monuments that only locals know.

I am an Italian licensed guide living in Paris since 2015. I have a PhD in Art History and I give tours in museums and monuments in Paris, walking tours in the city and guided tours in Versailles’ Château. I would like to expand my net of knowledges and meet new clients to share my tours and introduce my city. I believe that art is the best way to exchange with different cultures and to introduce national treasures to foreigners.

Hello ! I am lucky to be guiding people from all over the world since 2015 in one of the most beautiful cities : Paris. Paris Tour Guide - Naomi C.

I have been living and working in Paris for 15+ years. I love my city and love sharing its vibrant art scene with my guests. Originally, I studied Art and Philosophy at Concordia University, Montreal and received a Master 2 / Diplôme des Beaux-Arts de l'ESADHaR, Le Havre, France. As well as being a tour guide I am a practicing artist. I spent the first years of my life in Paris going to the museum every weekend to sketch the sculptures and paintings. I have over 10 years of experience working in the arts with artists, and galleries, as an artist and curator. I started out running an artist-run center and love making the experience of interacting with art accessible and fun. As a member of the art community, I am more than excited to share with you an insider's view of the Paris vibrant art scene. Let me show you how this city continues to inspire me every day. Don't hesitate to send me a message and tell me what kinda art you like! So, I can tailor the visit to your interest!

Paris Tour Guide - Deniz K.

Hello travelling foodies, Deniz here! My passion for cooking brought me to Paris almost 20 years ago, where I trained as a chef at Le Cordon Bleu. After working in top kitchens and pastry labs for many years, I have discovered the food nerd in me alongside a new passion for food research which led me to pursue a master’s degree in food studies. These experiences have given me a deep understanding of cultural, geographic and historical forces that shape recipes, food traditions and cuisines which I love sharing with others on my tours. I lead gastronomic adventures through bustling markets, specialty food stores, historic wine cellars, iconic Parisian institutions as well as hidden gems off the beaten path. I believe that tasting authentic flavors and learning about the stories behind them is the best way to appreciate the rich diversity of any culture. It will be an immense joy to share my knowledge and passion for food and wine with you through your Parisian food journey.

“ Fabulous morning with Jill in Montmartre - highly recommend ”

Jill’s tour was the highlight of my 3 day stay in Paris! Her enthusiasm and knowledge of the neighborhood’s history, culture and people are mind-blogging. She showed me places I could have never discovered on my own, each with its own captivating story. Jill also gave me good tips about places such as “the best baguette”, wine stores, cheese in the neighborhood. Jill really makes you feel like you belong there and makes you fall in love with Montmartre. I had such a memorable experience that I just didn’t want the tour to end!

Ruxandra Z.

Thank you very much, Ruxandra Z.

“ Incredible tour! ”

Leo gave us an amazing tour of The Catacombs Museum in Paris. She is incredibly knowledgeable about all aspects of the museum and is a captivating storyteller. It is a once in a lifetime experience to be given a catacombs tour by a Cataphile that lives and breathes their passion. Thank you for such a unique and inspiring experience. This is a memory we will cherish.

What other guests say about our tours and locals

Wealth of knowledge!

"Julian was an amazing guide! Everything we wanted and more. His explanation of what we were seeing was an education coming to life as he combined it with interesting stories of the timeframe. In addition to his knowledge and capacity to vividly explain the artwork, Julian is a very kind and helpful person. We were there during the crazy timeframe of the Olympic Games and it was extremely difficult to visit the Louvre with the strict security so we ran late jumping through the various security measures and Julian patiently waited for us without complaining or shortening our tour. He is worth every penny this tour cost and a huge tip in addition! If we return to Paris, we will visit other museums with Julian."

Gelsomina is Great!

"Anna at the Louvre was exceptional, providing detailed and engaging explanations of the museum's masterpieces. Her ability to capture the interest of both adults and children alike made the experience truly memorable. She tailored the tour to accommodate the kids, making art history fun and accessible. Overall, her passion and knowledge greatly enhanced our visit."

Paris's Hidden Gems revealled

"Our tour with Ali was amazing. His knowledge of Paris was great for our first trip to Paris. Not only did he show us the major tourist attraction but also some hidden gems which most tourist tours and books don't highlight. Thanks Ali for sharing your time and knoweldge with us."

Outstanding Tour of the Louvre with Lucien

"Lucien was absolutely the best guide - informative, knowledgeable, funny, helpful tips about Paris, knew history behind the great works of Art. I had recent fracture of back and was not sure how much I could do- He found a great stool, carried it and sat me up front near paintings while he told my family all the great stories behind paintings such as Liberty Leading the people. He showed us unexpected things and let us skip a few famous crowded exhibits we did not want - in other words tailored his tour to our requests. Absolutely A+. "

An lovely evening with Izabele

"Thank you for everything Izabele! I would highly recommend spending an evening in Paris with Izabele. She was very patient with us as we navigated Paris to arrive at our meeting spot. In the end, despite having to come and collect us she showed up with a warm and friendly smile. We walked and talked as though we were all old friends. She was flexible when we asked for a change in itinerary. Instead, she showed us the sights that locals typically enjoy. We explored two beautiful neighbourhoods that we never would have come across on our own. Izabele, answered our many questions. Since I was traveling in Paris with my teenage daughter I greatly appreciated her tips about safety and areas that we should consider avoiding after certain times. At the end of the evening, Izabele gave us a delicious dinner recommendation. After our tour she sent us an email with suggestions and recommendations that we discussed while we were in Paris. Additionally, when I asked for a further recommendation Izabele was most responsive. I would suggest booking the night walk with Izabele at the beginning of your trip. Spending the evening with Izabele at the beginning of our holiday really made a positive difference to our Paris experience!! "

1. paris walking food tour with secret food tours.

  • Duration: 3.5 hours
  • Departure: Bd de Clichy, Paris
  • Departure Time: Between 11:30 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Includes: Exceptional Viennoiserie (Notre Dame Tour), galette (savoury crêpe) from Brittany (Notre Dame Tour), French savoury tarts (quiche/paté en croute) and vegetables (Notre Dame Tour), authentic macarons, selection of cheeses , selection of freshly baked breads

Parisian gastronomy is something to be treasured, and I’ll admit that my first couple of times in the city I really sold the capital short. I thought that I’d been trying “authentic” Parisian food the entire time, when I’d been repeatedly falling into tourist traps.

With the Paris Walking Food Tour with Secret Food Tours  adventure, you’ll get to explore 6 different locations with plenty of traditional French fare that had me completely reimagine my view of Parisian cuisine!

What’s really cool about this tour is that you have the option of exploring the food scene of either Montmartre or the Notre Dame neighborhoods (hint: both are amazing).

As both are small group settings, you don’t have to worry about just being another head in the crowd. We felt like we were on a tour with a friend who just happened to be a local expert on the subject!

I of course, had to take both tours, and in Montmarte we were able to try delectable artisanal chocolates and macarons, along with a soft creme, and French bread at a boulangerie.

Expand To See More See Less

I really enjoyed learning about and sampling an array of French cheeses and cured meats, perfectly paired with fine French wines! I even learned the difference between a crepe and galette, which has been a great conversation starter wherever I go!

The Notre Dame tour covers some classic French delicacies and is right by where the entire city of Paris actually came to be, on the Île de la Cité.

We were able to try viennoiseries, oysters, some French tarts, and many other desserts. Along the way, we learned a ton about the history of each area and our guide gave us some amazing recommendations and what to look for in finding the best food joints in Paris.

Le Marais is one of the most popular destinations for tourists and locals, alike, in Paris. It’s filled with rich history, unique culture, arts, and plenty of delicious food!

The Le Marais Paris The Original District Food and Wine Tasting Tour  is the perfect way to explore it all in a neatly-designed excursion that will bring the district to life right before your eyes.

I’ve been to Le Marais plenty of times, but I have to say that this was the first time that I got to see some hidden gems that I never would’ve experienced on my own.

Our guide did a fantastic job at integrating a history and culture tour with the foodie aspect seamlessly with their own anecdotes and stories from the past.

With a maximum participant limit of just 10 people, it felt like a group of friends were strolling around enjoying some of the most mouthwatering dishes we’ve ever tried with an expert to lead the way!

This felt like such a unique experience, diving into places that are so far off the “touristy” path with 8 to 10 stops at little shops with amazing food.

I believe that the stops vary a bit depending on the start time, but everything is absolutely delicious. We tried plenty of delicious cheeses and cured meats, paired with fine French wines, which taught me so much about how to properly pair them!

Aside from that, we tried organic tepenade, baguettes, and jams, which was perfect for me as I’m a huge fan of breads and sweet, fruity jams!

After that, we headed over to some chocolate shops and learned from famous chocolatiers where we were fortunate enough to learn about and sample the chocolates and Macarons!

It was a lovely way to really get to know the historic Le Marais while trying some of the best foods it has to offer.

3. paris ultimate food tour.

  • Departure: 111 Rue de Turenne, 75003 Paris
  • Departure Time: 10:45 AM, 2:30 & 3:30 PM
  • Includes:  Local English-speaking guide, Expertly guided walking tour, 11 food tastings and 2 half glasses of wine across 8 amazing, family-run establishments in le Marais

This is yet another fantastic food tour of the charming Marais neighborhood, where you’ll get to learn all about the history of the area, the food, and of course, get to sample the goods!

The Paris Ultimate Food Tour  will take you on a gastronomic adventure through the heart of Paris, where you’ll get to explore the city’s rich culinary heritage spanning a wide spectrum of flavors!

Calling a tour the “ultimate” is quite a claim, but the comprehensive approach to how they showcase the diversity of Parisian food really does earn the title. I’d say that if you’re looking for something for the entire family, this thoughtfully curated tour is an excellent option.

The professional guides manage to speak in a way that addresses both seasoned foodies and curious “newbie” travelers in a way that doesn’t exclude anyone.

As it is a half-day tour, you should expect time at each stop to be relatively limited, but this is perfect as we got to go back later and try everything we really loved more in-depth.

I really enjoyed learning about the Marais and how it used to sit just outside Parisian walls, with a temple even built here by the Knights Templar!

As we learned, we were able to indulge in delicious cheeses and charcuterie and local markets, croissants from local bakers, sourdough, crepes, and much more!

Aside from the Chocolate Bar, my favorite stop was at La Boutique Jaune, which opened in 1946 in the heart of the Jewish Quarter – obviously a very tumultuous time in history, given that WWII had just ended.

From brioche to fine cheeses and wines, I felt that this expertly-crafted itinerary did a great job at showing off authentic Parisian flavors and the history that brought them to life.

4. Paris Le Marais Walking Food Tour With Secret Food Tours

Through rich culinary traditions and hidden gastronomic gems, this next tour is another compelling option that’ll teach you all about the culture of past and present-day Marais.

The  Paris Le Marais Walking Food Tour with Secret Food Tours  is the perfect choice if you want to see all those hidden spots that the vast majority of tourists never get to see. What I didn’t know before, is that so many dishes and flavors are unique to Le Marais, and this tour really shows them off.

What I really loved about this excursion was just how intimate it was, offering personalized attention and interaction with not only our guide but the various vendors at each stop.

The warm and welcoming atmosphere (something people don’t often relate to Parisians) really enriched the experience and made me feel more open to learning about the craft and energy of Le Marais.

To start things off, we had to enjoy our morning traditionally “French” with a fresh coffee and buttery soft croissant, which were simple but absolutely delicious.

The bakery or “boulangerie” stop was definitely one of my favorites, as we got to try plenty of French breads (which put those that I’d tried previously to shame).

After we were all fueled up, we strolled through the charming streets to the city’s oldest covered market to check out the array of different stalls and try tasty cheeses with wine.

At this point, we’d learned quite a bit about local culture and Parisian history, which only enriched the tasting experience further.

We then made a stop at a local brasserie which made it feel like had stepped right into some kind of French movie, with a lovely ambience and a delicious croque monsieur to snack on.

No afternoon is complete without trying some artisanal chocolates and French macarons, along with a “special secret dish” that you’ll have to try yourself!

5. Montmartre Food Tour with a Local Chef

  • Duration: 3.25 hours
  • Departure: 31 Rue Lepic, 75018 Paris
  • Departure Time: 10:300 AM, 3:30 PM
  • Includes: Savor baguette, macarons, amazing cheese, charcuterie, choux à la crème, 3 glasses of French wine, scenic viewpoints, local expert guide + a pdf Paris guide for food lovers.

You know, whenever you take a food tour, you really have to wonder about the background of the person guiding you around.

However, if you have a local professional chef leading the way, you can rest assured you’re in safe and competent hands.

With the  Montmartre Food Tour with a Local Chef  offers an immersive experience that will not only take you through some of the most amazing eateries in Paris, but will also teach you what to look out for in order to find an authentic and high-quality restaurant.

Montmarte is famous for its art, bohemian feel, cobblestone passageways, and this big white church you may have seen or heard of.

However, did you know it’s also a huge “foodie” scene boasting top-notch wine bars and fine-dining restaurants ranging from quick bites to haut-cuisine? It definitely offers a unique perspective to Parisian cuisine, with a professional chef there to add engaging commentary and insider insights!

We started with Le Grenier a Pain, which is known for its traditional baguettes, sourdough, pies, eclairs, and is so well-reputed that it’s even earned UNESCO World Heritage status!

I enjoyed a delicious pain au chocolate before we headed ot Boucherie Jacky Gaudin which offers some of the best French meats. I was admittedly a bit hesitant, but I did try rillettes which consistent of expertly-cooked goose meat.

Our visit to Belvedere was simply breathtaking, with amazing views of Paris – we got some time to soak it all in while taking plenty of photos and videos.

Next up, we tried a ton of carefully-selected cheeses and explored one of the oldest cabarets in the city! I noticed that on this tour we got to try many more pastries and sweets than the others, so if you have a sweet tooth make sure to put this tour at the top of your list!

6. The Award-Winning Private Food Tour of Paris: 6 or 10 Tastings

  • Duration:  3 hours
  • Departure: 112 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, 75012 Paris
  • Departure Time: Between 11:00 AM – 6:30 PM
  • Includes:  Private personalized tour, local foodie guide, 6 or 10 food and drink tastings (depending on option selected), veggie alternatives available

This is one of the best tours in my opinion, for those who are visiting Paris for the first time and would like a “taster” of the local cuisine while avoiding tourist traps. As it’s a private tour, it will be completely customizable so you can provide input for your specific interests!

The Award-Winning Private Food Tour of Paris: 6 or 10 Tastings  is an experience that will reflect your unique palate and interests while still showcasing Parisian cuisine in an authentic way.

I already had quite a booked itinerary planned, so it was nice that they offered so many different start times. We were also offered 2 different tour lengths: either 6 or 10 food and drink tastings, depending on your preferences.

I chose the 10-tasting tour so I could really enjoy the full experience and try all of the dishes and drinks to offer the best review possible.

The tour started off by meeting our guide at the Marché d’Aligre, which was quite impressive with the huge variety of different vendors from beautiful flowers to fresh French cheeses.

Our guide did a great job at selecting tastings based on what I’d told them I was most interested in, offering exclusive knowledge of the city along the way. I had a great time in Pletzl, which is the Jewish quarter that boasts an interesting background and tasty dishes.

We stopped by Hotel de Ville which not only is the residence of Paris’ mayor but also holds plenty of large events – we tried a delicious quiche Lorraine and crepes here!

I was able to enjoy plenty of other traditional French dishes with my family in a way that everyone was entertained and having a great time. It’s perfect for those who want to maximize their time and really want to learn a lot in a relatively short timeframe.

7. Montmartre Hill Sweet & Savory French Gourmet Food & Wine Tasting Tour

  • Duration: 3 to 3.5 hours
  • Departure: 5 Pl. Blanche, 75009 Paris
  • Departure Time: 10:30, 11:30 AM, 2:30, 4:00 PM
  • Includes:  Alcoholic beverages, food tasting such as macarons, cheeses and cured meats, local guide, small group tour

My entire life I’d heard so much about how the French eat, from friends and family to watching things related to French cuisine in cinema.

It seemed like some kind of mystery, and the typical touristy restaurants definitely don’t provide an authentic representation of French food. However, the Montmartre Hill Sweet & Savory French Gourmet Food & Wine Tasting Tour definitely does, taking you through 10 delicious food stops!

I’m a big history buff, and I truly enjoyed the way our guide managed to incorporate plenty of history lessons and fun facts throughout each stop we made.

I felt like it was a great balance between a traditional history tour and a dedicated food tour, with our guide clearly displaying their insider knowledge. I didn’t know all that much about Montmartre before the tour, but it was a blast getting to learn about its artistic and food scene!

We started out having a typically Parisian breakfast consisting of a little fresh coffee and a soft and warm croissant, while eating through an amazing boulangerie!

The vendors and owners were all so friendly, which made us feel that much more at home and open to learning about each location.

We also got to sample plenty of local treats ranging from cured meats and cheeses to sweet jams, handmade chocolates, and much more.

I feel like every food tour should combine sweet and savory, but you’d be surprised at how many don’t! As we strolled along and ate, we were given plenty of time to make stops at significant landmarks such as Moulin Rouge and the Sacre Coeur Basilica, along with the city’s only urban vineyard!

I couldn’t have asked for more with this Paris food tour, and I hope to do it again very soon!

Unarguably one of the most romantic cities in the world, Paris exudes a sense of history, charm and sophistication. The best way to get into the Paris vibe is to let your Paris Tourist Guide lead you on a walking tour of the city. The imposing Eiffel Tower promises panoramic views of high-rise buildings, palaces, monuments and ancient trees. Famous for the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the Cathedral of Notre- Dame with its arresting gothic style architecture and magnificent stained glass windows is home to numerous spiritual concerts and events. Brimming with art and culture, Paris offers a veritable choice, ranging from the Louvre and its collections of remarkable art pieces to an evening of risqué entertainment at the Moulin Rouge.  Uniqueness and talent further bring to mind the village of Montmartre, its cobbled streets beckoning curious travellers to explore.  Walk through the Arc de Triomph to the Avenue des Champs-Elysees where the best of Paris haute couture can be bought. A stroll along the magical river Seine would be the perfect way to whet your appetite; many delightful cafes with delicate pastries, restaurants offering nouvelle cuisine and bistros with home cooked food offer one a wide choice of food both day and night.
