Weekend trip from Lima: the Nor Yauyos-Cochas mountain nature reserve

Sometimes you need more than just a day to escape the big city. Our next suggestion for a trip from Lima is ideal for a weekend away. It’s about five to six hours driving inland and uphill from Lima. This one is perfect for those that love idyllic nature, hiking, rivers, waterfalls and small villages. Oh, and of course delicious local food. It’s Peru after all. Join us to the Pearl of the Andes, Nor Yauyos Cochas.

The picturesque mountain nature reserve of Yauyos Cochas is definitely an up-and-coming destination. And rightfully so! It’s a magical place with lagoons, snowy mountain tops and a myth or legend around every corner. You might feel discouraged by the rather long drive, but the drive is an attraction by itself: You’ll travel through idyllic villages and there are plenty of other attractions along the way.

Yauyos is known as the land of pumpkins, but, no disrespect to the pumpkin, its greatest treasure is without a doubt the Nor Yauyos-Cochas Landscape Reserve. Obtaining the title of ‘Landscape Reserve’ is quite an achievement, because it’s not easy to get this in Peru.  Of all the impressive tourist sites in the country, Nor Yauyos Cochas was the first to obtain this recognition! You’ll instantly realize why when you get there.

Known as one of the most beautiful high Andean landscapes in Peru, Yauyos-Cochas has emblematic snow-capped mountains, beautiful crystal-clear turquoise lagoons , deep canyons, vast forests of native trees and enormous Puyas Raimondii flowers (the largest species of bromeliad, reaching up to 15m in height). In addition, it’s the native habitat of typical Andean animals , such as the Andean fox, vicuñas, grebes and herons. This huge reserve’s main objective is not only to protect its ecosystems, but also to do so in harmony with the traditional activities of the local peasant communities .

One of the first places to visit in Yauyos-Cochas is Huantán, a district famous for its delicious cheeses. Keep an eye on the sky because you might see one of the mighty Andean condors defying air currents on the way. The landscape is dominated by the thousands of ancient platforms in excellent condition on the mountain slopes. These are ancient laboratories of roots and grains that are part of the living cultural heritage of the Lima mountains.

A must for cave enthusiasts is the town of Laraos, where you can see extraordinary cave paintings of scenes from primitive cattle life in Quillcasca (4,375 meters above sea level). Or you could visit the Qaqa Mach’ay cave, the highest in the world at 4,930 meters above sea level (16,174 feet) and 125 meters deep (410 feet). There’s also Pumacocha, the deepest cavern in South America , located at 4,400 meters above sea level, with a vertical drop of 638 meters (150 meters deeper than the Centennial Grotto in Brazil).

Continue to Alis, where you can still find 70 hectares of the critically endangered Lloque tree, which grows on abandoned platforms. Where the Alis river enters the majestic Uchco canyon, you can go for a 3km walk that leads to the ghost town of Huaquis in the district of Miraflores. This pre-Hispanic city was abandoned 150 years ago.

Finally, we arrive to Huancaya, one of the most famous towns in Yauyos-Cochas, where the stonecutters carve the boulders to build their houses and show off their streets. Below, on the Cañete river, a series of waterfalls and lagoons display some spectacular nuances of blue and green. Colonial stone bridges cross the river. Because of this heavenly landscape, visitors prefer to camp here to be closer to the stars and nature.

If you continue upstream for about 10 km, you’ll reach the almost abandoned town of Vilca. This town suffered a lot during the domestic conflict in Peru in the 1980s. That’s why they had to escape to the high mountains where they became excellent ranchers. They now produce more than a thousand kilos of cheese every week. Besides more beautiful lagoons, there is also the Forest of Love just outside town. This karkac forest on the calcareous rock of the Cañete river got its nickname because there is no young man or woman who doesn’t fall in love among its idyllic shadows.

Another important attraction is the snowy mountain of Pariacaca, located in the Tanta district. It was one of the most important deities in Inca times. Historians consider the route to get there as the most important pilgrimage path, because of the many associated cultural and religious practices. It still has a great influence on the worldview and daily life of the surrounding populations. Within the scope of the Pariacaca is one of the sections of the Qapaq Ñan or Inca Trail network that linked Cusco to various destinations of the ancient Inca empire, such as the Pachacamac Sanctuary just south of Lima.

How to get to Yauyos-Cocha s

If you travel by car, go to San Vicente de Cañete (kilometer 144 of the Panamericana Sur), take a detour to the left towards Imperial. Then pass through Lunahuaná and continue on the road up to kilometer 135, a place called Magdalena del Río. The detour to the left leads to the town of Yauyos (9 km). You can also continue along the banks of the Cañete river towards the Nor Yauyos-Cocha Landscape Reserve.

The Yauyos towns provide accommodation, inns and hostels, while in Huancaya, there is a camping area free of charge passing the colonial bridge on left bank of the Cañete river. In Vilca, there is another place in the upper part of town where you can camp in the middle of a eucalyptus grove. 

What to eat in Yauyos-Cocha

Don’t leave Yauyos-Cochas without trying its delicious food! Since all the towns are along the river, trying the delicious fried or smoked trouts is obligatory. But there are several other dishes you can try, such as pachamanca, lamb broth, patasca, cheese with potatoes, ram steak, alpaca steak, cheese and milk soup, nettle and goose porridge. Among the drinks the “chamis” or “quemadito” stands out, a combination of herbs, cinnamon, lemon and a local brandy. 

The question should be, “why not?” The answer would be a lot shorter. In brief, in Yauyos-Cochas you can do fishing, mountain biking , trekking, experiential tourism, rafting, photography, visit archaeological sites and camp next to lagoons. You can also cross canyons, walk Inca trails, and take a rest in endangered and ancient forests. You can try delicious food and party with the locals dancing around bonfires. What is Nor Yauyos Cochas National, and why is it so important?

Nor Yauyos Cochas is one of the more than 70 natural protected areas in Peru. The national park was created in 2001 to conserve the upper basin of the Cañete River, which is home to many wild species, breathtaking landscapes, and local communities. 

The conservation of this area is essential because the Cañete river provides hundreds of farming families with clean and abundant water. It also creates many unique ecosystems where birds, frogs, mammals, and other animal species coexist. Moreover, some areas inside the reserve, such as the wetlands, capture carbon dioxide from the environment.  

Finally, but not less important, the area is an excellent place to practice activities like hiking, mountain biking, and community-based tourism. Moreover, tourism in this area generates fair employment opportunities for the local communities that obtain an extra income through the sale of food, guided tours, and other activities.

Ecologists have identified 10 different ecosystems, enable more than 330 plant species to live inside the national park. This biological variety is due to the altitude difference found in the park: from 8,200 to 18,700 feet. 

With more than 100 bird species, 20 mammal species, and several reptiles, amphibians, and fish, this biodiverse area is a place worth protecting.

Local communities

What is really the soul of the Nor Yauyos Cochas Reserve is its local communities. The people living inside the reserve are mainly dedicated to agriculture and livestock raising. Currently, some locals also work in tourism-related activities. They offer lodging (homestays are very popular in some communities), food (although the trout is not a native fish, it is one of the main dishes in the area), and guided tours. 

Some of the communities you should visit while in Nor Yauyos Cochas are:

• Huancaya: this is the most known community inside the reserve. People from Lima and other parts of Peru and the world visit Huancaya with the illusion of managing the impressive waterfalls and turquoise lagoons. It is definitely a must!
• Laraos: Laraos community is the best place for tourists to learn more about agriculture in the Andes. Its pre-Hispanic terraces are incredible. The fact that the people from Laraos still use them to farm is even more impressive. 
• Vilca: this community is perfect for hikers and anglers. There are several short hiking routes where tourists can enjoy amazing views of crystal clear water lagoons. Vilca’s highlight is for sure, the “Love forest,” a small forest of queñuales, a native tree.

Archaeology

One of the most important sections of the Qhapaq Ñan, or Inca Trail, runs through the mountains within the Nor Yauyos Cochas Reserve. Today, this trail is still used by muleteers and merchants who travel between communities in the area. Escalerayoc is one of the best-preserved parts of the track. More than 2,000 steps allow locals and tourists to descend more than 1,000 feet in height.

• La Reserva Paisajística de Nor Yauyos Cochas es un refugio natural a solo siete horas de Lima. Allí es posible encontrar todo aquello que no creemos que existe tan cerca del bullicio de la capital: ríos y caídas de aguas de color esmeralda, profundos cañones que no tienen nada que envidiar al del Colca.

• La Reserva se encuentra ubicada en la cuenca alta y media del río Cañete y en la cuenca del Cochas Pachacayo en la serranía de los departamentos de Lima y Junín. Tiene una extensión de 221,268.48 hectáreas.

Los botes pasan tan cerca a las caídas de agua que casi podemos imaginar que estamos dentro de ellas. Pueden apreciar algunas fotos.
• 10:00 am Trekking Guiado a Orillas del Río Huarco (Exclusivo de Mundo Aventura). En busca siempre de la aventura y de los mejores paisajes, no nos conformamos con apreciar las lagunas desde los miradores. En este segundo día, caminaremos al lado de los hermosos paisajes que vimos el día anterior. Esta vez a sus orillas! Esta es nuestra actividad estrella, pues serán 3 horas recorriendo a paso muy lento los mejores paisajes, al lado de las lagunas, podremos nadar o refrescarnos en ellas, habrá mucho tiempo para fotos, para descansar y apreciar los deslumbrantes paisajes.

6:00 am Al llegar a Nor Yauyos, les llevaremos a su hotel.

8:30 am Después del desayuno, iniciaremos el tour visitando el pueblo de Llapay, donde conocerán la historia de la Reserva Nor Yauyos.

Siguiendo con el tour, viajaremos hacia la catarata del Ángel y trekking por el camino pre inca explorando el cañón de Uchco. De igual forma iremos al mirador de Alis, panorámicas del recuerdo en este bello lugar.

También visitaremos la villa hermosa de Tomas y su homenaje a las botas andinas.

Sin duda visitaremos el Puente colgante minero de Tinco Yauricocha el más  alto del Perú de 1km de largo. (ingreso 5 soles)

3:00 pm Almuerzo, tiempo libre, recomendamos descansar. Por la tarde bordearemos a Laraos, visitaremos el pequeño puente colgante, las cascadas de Yuncalara y el mirador del pueblo.

En este lugar observaremos los andenes milenarios de los Yauyos y explicaremos el control de los climas, además de la participación de las guerrillas en la emancipación.

7:00 pm Cena y pernocte. Opcional fogata.

8:00 am Desayuno en el hotel.

8:30 am Empezaremos el tour visitando el cañón del pongo y sus cascadas, donde compartiremos información sobre el capac ñan de los Yauyos y la fauna de Miraflores.

Después observaremos el pueblo fantasma de Huaquis, donde conocerán como ha sido testigo del desplazamiento por el cambio climático y las creencias populares. Asimismo, visitaremos las cascadas de Tambomachay para tomarnos unas panorámicas y conocer la historia de los Pishtacos.

Sin duda, disfrutaremos de un paisaje espectacular en la laguna de Piquecocha, compartiremos su leyenda y el pago a la mamacocha. Opcional natación en su balneario. Además, visitaremos el valle de Maractupe y su mirador donde conocerán de primera mano nuestra biodiversidad: plantas nativas y aves silvestre. Almuerzo.

Finalmente partiremos a Lima, en el trayecto compraremos frutas de la zona y observaremos la Piedra Calavera visitaremos un viñedo en Lunahuaná donde degustaremos de vinos, pisco y macerados.

What to do in Huancaya?

Tour the town center of huancaya.

Dia 1: Lima – Huancaya

Entre as 3:00 e as 3:30 horas, passaremos para buscá-lo pelos diferentes pontos de encontro localizados em Lima. De lá, iremos de micro-ônibus até a província de Yauyos . Por volta das 12:00 horas chegaremos a Huancaya, um dos povoados que fazem parte da  Reserva Paisagística Nor Yauyos-Cochas .

Depois de nos instalarmos nos quartos, desfrutaremos de um delicioso almoço. Com as energias recarregadas, viajaremos à lagoa Huallhua , onde subiremos a bordo de uma barca para conhecer das cachoeiras mais bonitas da região.  

Depois deste passeio de canoa, iremos a diferentes mirantes para contemplar de uma perspectiva inesquecível as cachoeiras Carhuayno , Quinllo , Cabracancha ou a ponte Colonial .

Para terminar o dia da melhor maneira possível, desfrutaremos de um delicioso jantar no hotel.

Dia 2: Huancaya - Lima

Descansaremos no hotel e às 7:00 horas recuperaremos as energias com um delicioso café da manhã. Iremos nos preparar para uma jornada repleta de aventuras e viajaremos a Vilca , a primeira parada do dia. Realizaremos um tour guiado pela cidade e iremos ao mirante de San Cristóbal , um lugar perfeito para contemplar a  Reserva Paisagística Nor Yauyos-Cochas .

Entraremos nessa reserva em busca da lagoa de Papacocha , do bosque do Amor e da cascata do Edén . São lugares que irão lhe conquistar! Depois dessa rota pela natureza peruana, voltaremos a Huancaya, onde almoçaremos antes de chegar a Lima.

Finalizaremos o tour de dois dias chegando à capital do Peru na última hora do dia. 

Este tour inclui uma noite de hospedagem com um café da manhã, dois almoços e um jantar  em uma casa rural de Huancaya com banheiro compartilhado.

La ruta más frecuente es tomando la Panamericana Sur vía Cañete , que son 140 km, seguir hasta tomar el desvío de Lunahuaná y de allí se sigue la carretera hacia Vitis y Huancaya que son alrededor de 130 km.

Cómo llegar en Transporte Público

Se debe tomar un bus que se dirija hasta San Vicente de Cañete , el cual tiene un costo entre 10 y 15 soles. Seguido se debe ir en couster hasta Imperial, con un costo de 1 sol por pasaje y bajarse en el Jr. Atahualpa. Por último, se debe, ubicar los buses que llevan hacia Yauyos, que llegan hasta Huancaya . Son alrededor de 7 horas de viaje.
