We’re not a zoo

  • Port Lympne Reserve is a breeding sanctuary for rare and endangered animals and wherever possible we aim to send animals born here to protected areas of their natural habitat where they can live free – just as they should be.
  • We always make sure that the animals come first, from enclosure design to diet, no expense is spared. We grow our own herbs and vegetables and source our meat from trustworthy suppliers.
  • We design our enclosures with the animals in mind, so there’s lots of natural foliage and furniture to provide shelter and camouflage.
  • We never lock our animals into viewing areas, so, just like in the wild, it may take some time to spot certain animals.
  • We do our best to provide a fantastic visitor experience, whilst not forgetting the primary reason we’re here – to ensure the survival of endangered animals.
TRIPADVISOR Wonderful Day Out An excellent place to visit - see the animals close up and enjoy excellent food at Baby Dolls restaurant. Friendly helpful staff everywhere around the huge park. The Safari ride is a must do. A great day out at a great price. Ken S. Written August 26, 2021
TRIPADVISOR Super Safari The reserve is large and offers a lovely day out. I highly recommend booking the safari as this was the best part of our visit. Amy Rogers. Written August 6, 2021
TRIPADVISOR An unbelievable experience We were all amazed at just how good this place is. We stayed in the hotel for two nights so got two full days in the park. Everything is so well organised and the safari drives are brilliant. You get to see so many animals close up. We have been to a South African safari and we saw more animals here than we did there. We were very luck with the weather which added to the experience. You have to give this place a try, you will love it and the kids will too. Gary F. Written October 6, 2020

Our Day At Port Lympne Safari Park and Wild Animal Reserve REVIEW

This year I have started to hear about Port Lympne. A safari park and wild animal reserve in Kent. Who also offer amazingly different short break experiences. I couldn’t believe that there is a safari park in Kent giving you the full safari jeep experience. The only time we had ever experienced something like that is in Disney’s Animal Kingdom , I didn’t know it was an option in the UK. We were offered the chance to visit for the day to review the park, I couldn’t wait to take the children there.

Visiting Port Lympne

Port Lympne works extremely closely with the Aspinall Foundation. They are a conservation charity who are leading the way in the reintroduction of captive-bred animals back into the wild.

ethan little e port lympne sign

Port Lympne is home to Kent’s only giraffes and spectacled bears. Gorilla feeds are a real highlight of any visit and take place at 12 and 3 pm. They also have a Dinosaur Forest that is the UK’s largest outdoor dinosaur exhibition.

The reserve covers 600 acres and is home to more than 760 animals from over 90 species. It is split into two areas, the safari truck routes, and the pedestrian routes. It has a combination of hilly and flat terrain. This can sometimes be steep and uneven.

ethan port lympne map

If you are interested in a short break at Port Lympne there are over 13 different ways to stay there. Including glamping, the hotel, a stay in a bubble or a tiger, wolf or rhino lodge.

The Safari Experience

Upon entering Port Lympne we were directed to Basecamp. This is where the truck stop is to join the safari. We got there just after opening and wanted to make this our first port of call to avoid any long queuing times. As soon as we arrived at the truck stop a truck arrived for us to board with the group of passengers already waiting.

The safari takes you through a South American Experience, an Asian Experience, and an African Experience. The safari easily lasted an hour and our driver was full of information about the animals and the reserve.

At the South American Experience, you might be able to spot

  • Spectacled Bears

The safari truck drops you at the stop in Carnivore territory. This is located at the bottom of the reserve. The driver did give us the option to return to Basecamp with him but we wanted to explore this area next. From this point, you walk up the hill back towards Basecamp. There are parts that are steep. If you stay on a short break some of the accommodation comes with the use of golf buggies. I think these would come in very handy to visit the rest of the park.

We captured our safari experience in the below video.

Dinosaur Forest

The next area of Port Lympne that we visited was the Dinosaur Forest. As expected this area is filled with dinosaurs. They are displayed in the correct timeline from when they roamed the earth.

The area contains lots of information about each dinosaur. We were even given a questionnaire about the dinosaurs to complete as we entered Port Lympne. We didn’t fill it in though as the children were having too much fun dinosaur spotting.

Dinosaur Forest is a lot bigger than we were expecting it to be and the children loved it.

The below video shows us exploring the Dinosaur Forest.

Meeting A T-Rex

Every Sunday during the summer holidays the Dinosaur Forest has had another visitor. A ‘real-life’ T-Rex . We made sure we were there when it was time for him to visit.

Joe the T-Rex was lots of fun and the children thought he was very funny.

Little E was even put in charge of him. She had to walk him around and keep him under control! You can see all the fun the children had below…

The Primate Trail

After we stopped for lunch at Babydoll’s Wood Fired Pizza we made our way around the pedestrian route. We headed towards the Primate Trail. The highlight of this part of the reserve for me was the Apes and Gorillas.

They are animals that Colchester Zoo doesn’t have, and I think they are a rare sight in many zoos.

sleeping ape

What was really amazing was that there was a baby ape. It was fantastic to see one so small. It is also nice to know that they are happy enough to breed at Port Lympne.

baby ape

I really wanted to experience the Gorilla feed but Ethan had struggled during our visit so we decided to give it a miss on this visit. I’m hoping there will be a future visit where we can experience this.

The below video is the full vlog of our day at Port Lympne.

Our Thoughts Of Port Lympne

Port Lympne doesn’t have the feel of a zoo. There is a more relaxed feel in the atmosphere. There are so many different animals to see there.

The safari was a real highlight for us. Amazing to have this experience in the UK. It was also very educational for us all.

The children loved their time there and also enjoyed playing in the different playgrounds.

ethan little e port lympne playground

I feel like Port Lympne want to offer its visitors an experience to remember at their reserve. They do this by offering a very different short break experience. Even down to the restaurant where we ate lunch, it just feels so different from a normal zoo-type visit. Babydoll’s could easily be a standalone restaurant found in your local town.

We would love to return but we would like to experience an overnight stay . Preferably accommodation that includes a golf buggy. The hills of the reserve did call for the purchase of cake on our return to Basecamp.

DISCLOSURE – We were gifted entrance to Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve for the purposes of this post and to create our YouTube videos. We always give our honest opinions, findings, beliefs, and experiences.

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review

Bonjour lecteurs! Since we moved down to Ashford, we have visited many places in our new neighbourhood. Days out at the beach and walks in the country are now part of a typical Frenchie weekend. We were lucky to visit Port Lympne Reserve over a Sunny Bank Holiday Weekend. Described as an exciting day out in Kent filled with discovery for the entire family , here is our  Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review just for you.

Port Lympne Wildlife Park

If you visit Kent and its whereabouts or if you are an animals’ lover, have a look at Port Lympne Wildlife Park.

Set in over 600 acres , the reserve offers a large choice of experiences for all the family. We spend a day visiting the place but you can also stay in one of its unique accommodations. If you love glamping and being able to see animals in a  similar environment to their natural habitat, Port Lympne Wildlife Park is parfait for you!

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review, Family Day Out, Kent, Safari Truck, Review, The Frenchie Mummy

With over 760 animals across 90 species , it is like being in Africa or in Asia.

You can also jump in on a truck safari.

Walking in the Reserve

We started our visit and I was happily surprised to see how big the entire place was . When we arrived in the area, I naively thought that Port Lympne was your typical British zoo but it is way more than that. We enjoyed the very diverse places .

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review, Family Day Out, Kent, Safari Truck, Review, The Frenchie Mummy

Baba happily played by the pond and wanted to walk around everywhere at first!

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review, Family Day Out, Kent, Safari Truck, Review, The Frenchie Mummy

Even though the park can sometimes be a bit hilly, it was very pleasant to walk in the shade (it was a very hot day) and see animals such as monkeys and rhinos so close up.

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review, Family Day Out, Kent, Safari Truck, Review, The Frenchie Mummy

Another thing I really like about Port Lympne is the ethos in place . I don’t know about you but every time I go to a wildlife park, I always end up feeling sorry for the animals, caged in small spaces.

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review, Family Day Out, Kent, Safari Truck, Review, The Frenchie Mummy

There is nothing like that at Port Lympne! If anything, it is a pleasure to see that all animals are living in  similar conditions to their original habitats .

We also had the feeling that people working there had a true passion for animals.

Some good facilities for children

After seeing the Port Lympne Hotel (which is stunning!), we decided to head over to Basecamp and get on a safari truck.

With a queue of over 30 minutes, it would have been very easy to give up and forget this idée to experience a safari made in England .

However, it is very well planned and you can stop by the café if you need refreshments.

The other plus as it was super busy and we had to wait? There is a play area right next to the queue so those little ones can get busy . Such a relief because it can sometimes be difficile to entertain children, especially when it is super hot!

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review, Family Day Out, Kent, Safari Truck, Review, The Frenchie Mummy

Baba had a blast on the slides and was very happy to show off to all the local girls… So badly indeed we had to put up with a massive tantrum when it was time to go on the truck! Oops! Désolée to all the other passengers!

A Trip on the Safari Truck

Even though it was bumpy at times, it was nice to be able to sit and enjoy . The reserve is really big, so we walked quite a bit before getting on. Plus I had the amazing idée to wear wedges to look glamorous…(DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE! This place is so big to walk around, you want comfy shoes!)

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review, Family Day Out, Kent, Safari Truck, Review, The Frenchie Mummy

Yet again, the whole thing was a great surprise . I was expecting something quick and rushed but we actually had the full experience with some good explanations from our driver while we could admire some stunning views and be close to some fabulous animals !

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review, Family Day Out, Kent, Safari Truck, Review, The Frenchie Mummy

Stopping every now and then so that we could take pictures, it was once again very nice to see wild animals in such a large space .

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review, Family Day Out, Kent, Safari Truck, Review, The Frenchie Mummy

The Safari Truck Tour is really worth it so if you visit and see a long queue, go for it and don’t give up. There is plenty to do to keep les enfants busy while waiting and you are in for a treat!

Protecting endangered animals

As I already explained, I really liked the overall feeling of Port Lympne . It is clear that the wildlife reserve is very involved to ensure that many species do not become instinct.

As a member of the Aspinall Foundation, which for over 30 years has been known for returning captive-bred animals to protected wilderness areas and reserves worldwide , Port Lympne is more than a beautiful attraction touristique.

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review, Family Day Out, Kent, Safari Truck, Review, The Frenchie Mummy

Bien sûr , we were a bit disappointed that we did not see the tigers (it was so hot they hid inside), but each animal is kept in very similar conditions to their natural habitat.

To be fair, the park is so huge, I really feel like we had a good dose of everything!

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review – Le verdict

Visiting Kent soon? Do not miss Port Lympne Wildlife Park! It is a beautiful place with so much to do and see!

We loved the diversity of it with some gorgeous 15 acres of terraced gardens at the top of the reserve, around the Hotel and Pinewood and the other side a bit more adventurous with the safari truck.

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review, Family Day Out, Kent, Safari Truck, Review, The Frenchie Mummy

It is so big (and sometimes, the directions within the park were a bit ambiguous in our opinion), I suggest you download une carte of the reserve beforehand on the website so you that you are well prepared.

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review, Family Day Out, Kent, Safari Truck, Review, The Frenchie Mummy

Port Lympne Wildlife Park is a very family friendly attraction with many activities to entertain kids . You can also use pushchairs around the park so no need to bring yours and the changing facilities are clean.

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review, Family Day Out, Kent, Safari Truck, Review, The Frenchie Mummy

It is a unique experience with the UK. Be prepared to see animals in similar conditions to their wild habitat.

Everyone really enjoyed this day out and living only 20 minutes away, we will definitely be back soon!

Port Lympne Wildlife Park Review, Family Day Out, Kent, Safari Truck, Review, The Frenchie Mummy

Actually, I might ask Grumpy Boyfriend to book us a room for my birthday in August at the Port Lympne Hotel. It looks really luxurious while its environment is très unique!

Even better!  All accommodation profits go to the Foundation’s conservation work ! So not only I can pretend to be a princess for the day but I can also do something good at the same time!

We love Port Lympne and have visited twice with the boys and stayed overnight, one in the Treetops Hotel and once in a safari tent. It’s an amazing place and the boys love it and the Rangers are all so enthusiastic and love spending time talking about the animals. We booked the private safari and it was definitely worth it. Great review and glad you enjoyed it as well.

I used to go to a festival which is held in the grounds of the wildlife park and it was so cool as you could go and visit the animals any time you wanted to x

We have a small native wildlife park where I live that my kids love walking through. They have kangaroos, koalas, turtles, and lots of insect cbd bird life. We have one with African animals that’s very similar to the one you went to but it’s a 6 hour drive for us – hopefully will get the kids there one day!

Oh wow how lovely does this place look. Very peaceful, tranquil and in a stunning setting x

Looks like you had a great day out! Love the giraffe pics, they are always my favourites.

This place looks amazing. My kids would absolutely love this. Looks like you all had a fab time xx

Lucky you, never had the chance to visit, but when I see your wonderful pictures I can’t wait to visit Wildlife Park soon.

Sounds like a brilliant place to bring the kids. I love reading when zoos and reserves have large enclosures and even better, the ones there are more like the animals natural habitat. Glad you enjoyed your time there.

What a lovely place to visit. Looks like lots of fun things to see and do. Looks like you all had a great time 🙂

Me and my little one love a good wildlife park but this looks like it has such good facilities for children. Definitely next on our list.

My Tunbridge Wells

Review: Going on Safari at Port Lympne Wildlife Park

We visited Port Lympne Safari Park and Wild Animal Reserve at the start of the summer holidays and loved spending the day exploring the home of an impressive range of animals! The safari experience is so unique and something we haven’t come across anywhere else in the UK. We also had lunch as the The Garden Room Restaurant, which we can’t wait to tell you more about below…

Port Lympne Review

What is Port Lympne Safari Park and Wild Animal Reserve ?

Port Lympne in Kent works in partnership with the Aspinall Foundation, an internationally renowned animal conservation charity that works in conjunction with Howletts too.

Both Port Lympne and Howletts are very different from conventional zoos that you may have visited, and thanks to their work with the Aspinall Foundation, are leading the way in animal care, enclosure design, enrichment and breeding success. Both parks are designed to be breeding sanctuaries for some of the world’s most rare and endangered animals.

Port Lympne Review

Port Lympne welcomes visits for both the day and also for overnight stays. We did a day trip and were there from around 10am until 5pm. Port Lympne itself is set over 600 acres of Kent countryside, with over 700 rare and endangered animals.

The safari experience offers an authentic safari experience where visitors board a safari truck and get transported through the plains of Africa and Asia to see the animals roaming freely. This is included in the ticket price and lasts around an hour.

Port Lympne

Visitors can also explore on foot, the big cats, small cats, primates, gorillas and lots of other species as well as the life sized prehistoric creatures in Dinosaur Forest!

What did we think?

♥  The safari was just amazing. You would honestly never know that you were in Kent and it really did transport us to another place. Our safari guide was excellent and it was fascinating for both us adults and the children to hear what she has to say about the animals throughout our tour. We loved stopping to observe the animals and the giraffes were an absolute highlight for us!

port lympne safari park reviews

♥  I enjoyed ‘feeding time’ at the primates section where we were able to see the monkeys swinging across their habitat to pick up the food which had been left out for them. There were a couple of babies which had attached themselves to their Mums and it was sweet to see them clinging on while their Mum fetched them all lunch.

Port Lympne Review

♥ Seeing the lions and tigers (our last place to visit before going home) was wonderful. At first we couldn’t see any, until we spotted an enormous tiger sleeping on top of a tunnel of some kind. He was stunningly beautiful and when he woke up and looked directly at us, I think I may have fallen in love…

♥  The Dinosaur Forest is really impressive too. Basically it’s a trail where visitors can see very life-like prehistoric dinosaurs dotted along it. There seemed to be way more dinosaurs than I remember from our last visit and my youngest child was pretty enamoured with the ‘baby dinosaurs’.

port lympne safari park reviews

♥ As visitors now book a time in advance for the safari truck tour, it means that the waiting time to go on the truck is minimal. We lined up about 10 minutes beforehand. It is so refreshing to go on a family day out with no queues!

Port Lympne Review

♥ There are some superb dining options at Port Lympne. If you enjoy pizza, then make sure you visit Babydoll’s Wood Fired Pizza. Or for something a little more special, we had a delicious meal at the The Garden Room Restaurant. The decor is beautiful and it was a welcome respite from the sun. Looking for food recommendations?

Port Lympne Review

The kids opted for breaded chicken goujons and chips with peas and carrots, which was high quality and more than enough for them. I had the chickpea, spinach and falafel burger and my husband chose to have the beef burger – not cliched at all!

Port Lympne Review Dessert

All meals were flavoursome and top quality and I must say, the desserts they excelled themselves with the desserts. Check out the menu here . Creme brûlée with a gorilla shaped short-bead biscuit? Yes please!

A few things to note

♥  Buggies / pushchairs need to be left in a special area (undercover) before going on the safari truck. Once you have completed the safari, you can choose to get off the truck near Dinosaur Forest and then make your way up through the park, back to the top. If you have a young baby (mine is 5 months) then definitely bring a sling or carrier to pop them in.

Port Lympne

♥ If you want to extend your safari experience, consider staying overnight at Port Lympne. There are quite a few options to choose from now. From luxury lodges, treehouses and glamping, offering an immersive wildlife experiences, and a chance to be close to nature.

Port Lympne

♥  There’s a noticeboard with the feeding times for the animals at the entrance, just ahead of where tickets can be purchased. If you take a pic of this, then you’ll have the various times on your phone to have a look at throughout the day. It is lovely to see the animals being fed so worth coordinating the timings if you can.

It took us around just over an hour to get to Port Lympne from Tunbridge Wells. On site parking is free and tickets to enter the wildlife park can be purchased HERE .

We received complimentary entry in Port Lympne Wildlife Park along with lunch at The Garden Restaurant, in return for an honest review.

From playgroups, education and English Tutors to events, activities and fun for all the family, you are in the right place!
