Profiles & Route Tour of Norway 2023

Profiles . From the 26th to the 29th of May the peloton travels to Norway for what is one of the most scenic races of the year. The Tour of Norway usually sees big figures and this year is no exception.

The race features only four stages, starting with a small prologue with a difficult summit finish, and including three hilly days which should make for a thrilling overall classification battle.

Profiles & Route Tour of Norway 2023

Only 7.4 kilometers in the opening prologue of the race, which takes place in Bergen, however a day that could be crucial for the overall classification. It's an unique type of day, which is rarely in the calendar anymore, as it's a hilly one. It finishes atop Mount Floyen such as the 2017 World Championships, it's a 3.5 kilometers at 8.7%.

Profiles & Route Tour of Norway 2023

Stage 1 of the race is the longest and also a difficult one. It includes long climbs but they get shorter towards the end. Nevertheless it's a 4000-meter of climbing day, with a 3.7Km at 7.7% climb close to the finish which could see the race explode. If not, the hilltop finish in Hovden will one way or another provide ground for some differences towards the finish line.

Stage 2 has a very difficult start with a 3.4-kilometer ascent at 9% at the bottom of a long ascent, and then the day features a few hilltops but is expected to see a more controlled finale. It will be an uphill one however, in Stavanger the gradients will rise almost to 10% towards the line, the final kilometer averages 5%.

Weather at the start/finish city of Stavanger at 1:55 PM, local time: 12C (54F), cloudy, with the wind from the northwest at 19 km/hr (12 mph). There is a 15% chance of rain.

The race: Stage three's neutralized start was at 11:55 AM. There were three non-starters: Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost), Alexander Richardson & Jack Rootkin-Gray (both St. Piran). That left 109 starters. Late in the stage Shane Archbold (Bora-hansgrohe) abandoned.

Here's the report from second-place Tobias Lund Andresen's Team DSM:

Monday’s final day of racing at the Tour of Norway saw the peloton take on a 151 kilometre route, starting and finishing in the town of Stavanger. It was a fast start to the day with lots of attacks before a nine rider group eventually snapped the elastic and went clear. With all Team DSM riders in the peloton, focus remained on staying safe and saving energy for the finish circuit which included a short but punchy climb.

Working well as a group, the team stayed well positioned and kept fast finisher Tobias Lund Andresen safe ahead of the last lap, where the break was caught. On the climb, Lund Andresen managed to follow the best and things regrouped somewhat at the front, with the bunch charging towards a sprint finish in Stavanger. It was a fast and nervous finale but the young Dane navigated the twisting roads well and could sprint from a great spot. Giving his all to the line, he was just bested from Kristoff, taking another strong second place finish.

The Tour of Norway's final stage gets started.

With no major shakeups in the overall standings, Marco Brenner ended the race in tenth place on GC for the team – his first top ten in the overall classification, with Lorenzo Milesi not far behind in 13th – which was also his first top 15 in the GC standings as a pro.

Speaking after the stage Lund Andresen said: “Today there was a lot of panic in the peloton because of the snaking roads, so there could be echelons at any time. We were always together as a group and the guys kept me safe. On the laps it was crazy with all that road furniture, but the boys tried to stay as close to me as possible and keep me towards the front. I felt really good so I was joining the jumping on the climb in the last couple of laps and could was well positioned. In the sprint, Kristoff was just a little bit faster and it was a close second place for the second time in three days in the end.”

Weather at the finish city of Stavanger at 1:50 PM, local time: 12C (55F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the northwest at 26 km/hr (17 mph). There is just a 1% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from GC leader Ben Tulett's Team INEOS Grenadiers.

Ben Tulett extended his race lead at the Tour of Norway with third place in the uphill sprint on stage two.

The young Brit clawed back key ground in the final kilometres and timed his effort well on the ramp to the line in Stavanger, taking third place and four bonus seconds. Thibau Nys (Trek-Segafredo) won the stage to claim his first pro victory.

The result saw Tulett's overall lead extend out to a still slender five seconds over team-mate Magnus Sheffield. Sheffield hit out early in the sprint and placed eighth, to make sure of a Grenadiers 1-2 heading into Monday's finale.

Once again the team worked well to help control the race and breakaway at times, including over the snow-lined Knuttjørn pass.

Ben Tulett: "It was really tough to be honest. We had a fight on our hands from the beginning to control the breakaway and make sure we were happy with the situation.

"We had a really difficult mountain pass which was also quite cold, but beautiful. It was really nice to see that. Then obviously a super difficult final to this stage. I was actually out of position coming into the final couple of kilometres so I had work to do to get back into position. I’m really happy to come away with third place today. Another day done.

"Here there are no easy days. We have to be up for it and for sure we’re motivated to finish this off in a good way."

Weather at the finish city of Hovden at 1:45 PM, local time: 8C (47F), cloudy, with the wind from the southwest at 16 km/hr (10 mph). There is a 16% chance of rain.

The race: Bad weather forced the race organizer to shorten the stage from the planned 206 kilometers to 82.5 km.

Due to adverse weather conditions with freezing temperatures and heavy rain, today’s Tour of Norway stage was shortened to 85 kilometres and instead started in Røldal. Climbing from the flag drop, it was an intense day in the saddle with several attacks and a strong pace set in the peloton; becoming more a race of attrition. No group was able to build up a substantial lead and heading onto the shorter but steeper second climb Lorenzo Milesi put in a strong attack which caused a reaction in the peloton, thinning out the group even more.

Well represented in the reduced peloton with five riders, Team DSM rode cohesively as a unit on the tough parcours and under grizzly weather conditions but the day seemed destined to come down to a reduced group sprint. On the slight descent before the kick up to the line the bunch was strung out through some wet and sharp corners, with Tobias Lund Andresen moving up well and following the wheels. Coming out and delivering a strong kick, he almost made it past everyone on the drag to the line with only one rider managing to hold off the fast-finishing Dane who took a very respectable second place on the stage.

“Today was super short and intense,” explained Lund Andresen. “We started straight into a long climb with attacks from the bottom and later there was a hard but controlled pace. After the first climb we came together and entered the steep one in a good place. Lorenzo went for a strong attack which put on a high pace, making a big split in the peloton with only a couple of fast guys left in the group, including myself. The finish was super hectic with wet sharp corners and in the end I had really good legs, but just not enough metres in the end to come around for the win.”

Weather at the the race city of Bergen at 2:35 PM, local time: 11C (51F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the west at 14 km/hr (9mph). There is an 80% chance of rain.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner and GC leader Ben Tulett's Team INEOS Grenadiers

Ben Tulett got the Tour of Norway off to the best possible start with victory in the opening time trial prologue, leading home a Grenadiers 1-2 finish.

The Brit blitzed the final climb to take victory with a time of 14 minutes and 28 seconds, crossing the line just one second ahead of team-mate Magnus Sheffield.

That was enough to move him into the early race lead, with three more stages to race ahead of the finish on Monday.

Five Grenadiers placed inside the top 20 times on the day in what was a strong and consistent start to the race. Josh Tarling (17th), Connor Swift (19th), Leo Hayter (20th) and Luke Plapp (47th) rounded out the results on a good opening day.

Ben Tulett: "We knew it was going to make for a really hard time trial today. Of course it meant that the execution was really crucial. We came yesterday to look at the course and we identified pretty quickly that it was going to be really tough. We knew we were in for a fight today but I’m happy with my performance so far.

"It’s something different to do it on road bikes but quite fun. It looks like it’s going to be a hard week of racing.

"I didn’t really know [what to expect]. I just went out there and tried to do my best to see where I ended up. There are some really strong time trialists here like Magnus who are super strong. I knew I was in for a hard fight but we’ll see where I end up.

"We’re definitely motivated for this race and all excited and up for it."

7.4 kilometers raced at an average speed of 30.691 km/hr

Classic norway at leisure, september 2023, perfect for us.

We wanted a tour where we travelled independently from a group and explored at our own pace. The Norway at Leisure tour was perfect for us. Having all of our travel and accommodations arranged for us made it easy to navigate a new country. We also appreciated having our hotels very close to train stations, museums and scenic areas.

Wonders of the Norwegian Fjords, July 2023

The trip of a lifetime.

This was the trip of a lifetime. Norway is unbelievably beautiful and this trip with Nordic Visitor was amazing! The fjords were spectacular and the Norwegian towns and landscapes were charming. Our small group of 14 (plus the driver and tour guide) was perfect. Our group included people from the USA, Hong Kong and Australia, and all were very friendly and interesting. A perfect tour!

Norway road trip - complete, july 2023, wonderful driving trip.

We had a wonderful driving trip through Norway, with the opportunity to visit many of the larger towns and cities beginning with Oslo in the east, heading north (Røros was a delightful surprise) to Trondheim, then south to Bergen. We really appreciated the clearly marked map and all of the suggestions for things to do and see along the way. Check-in to our accommodation each day was easy and quick, leaving us more time to explore wherever we were. Thank you to Nordic Visitor for the help and organisation - you made it easy.

Ellen, United States

Best of the norwegian fjords, july 2023, so much to see and do.

I travelled a good part of Norway via train, bus and boat to visit Oslo, Trondheim, Flåm, Bergen and back to Oslo. It was the best trip. So much to see and do every day. I was travelling solo and the itinerary was very do-able and easy to follow. I saw and did so much and came home loving Norway.

Beth, United States

Highlights of norway, may 2023, excellent and memorable experience.

Services provided by Nordic Visitor were excellent. Accommodation was lovely. Breakfast buffets were very good and had much to choose from. Provided meals were good with a chance to try local flavor. Transportation was seamless and very clean and comfortable. We covered a lot of distance and saw much beauty. Overall experience was excellent and memorable. This small group tour is full of nature, with some city visits and free time incorporated. I enjoyed the walking tours provided by Nordic Visitor. Although a busy trip, there was time in-between to relax on the boat and trains. Our tour leader, Erla, was excellent - informative, attentive, available and pleasant. I enjoyed travelling with the small group and met some very nice people. I would recommend Nordic Visitor and hope to travel with them again.

Leslie, United States

The self-guided tours are the best way to go. Nordic Visitor provides a very complete and comprehensive itinerary that is very easy to follow. We were on our own daily time schedule so could stop wherever we wanted with no time constraints. The route took us through some extraordinary scenery and views. Norway is a gorgeous country with very friendly people.

Lofoten & the fjords, june 2023, an incredible time.

Nordic Visitor made planning for the trip an incredibly smooth process. In particular, Juliana has been absolutely fantastic to work with. She went over and above to ensure we had a great trip, and we owe the success of our trip to her. She was always available for questions, guidance and was ever so responsive to anything we needed. Thank you for an incredible time, we will return to Nordic Visitor for planning all future trips in the area.

Best of the norwegian fjords – express, may 2023, great service from nordic visitor.

We appreciated all the work that went into creating this trip for us. When we brought up a few challenges on our end, the group helped us out and accommodated our needs the best they could in the time frame we gave them. All correspondence was quick and helpful. All the hotels were great, helpful and comfortable. We loved our chance to mingle with Norwegians as we took their transportation. They were kind and helped us when we were unsure about anything. The places Nordic Visitor suggested were beyond our expectations, even with the great materials they sent along to show us where we were going. We loved every minute of our trip and have already recommended Nordic Visitor to relatives and friends. Nordic Visitor gave us great service and we really appreciate it.

Tour of Norway: Ben Tulett wins prologue to capture first leader's jersey

Sheffield and Valter round off podium on uphill finish to Mount Fløyen

Ben Tulett (Ineos Grenadiers) won the uphill prologue to Mount Fløyen and took the first leader’s jersey of the Tour of Norway. His time of 14:28 was one second better than Ineos teammate Magnus Sheffield, who took second.

The Ineos duo completed rides among the first half of the 113-rider field, and only Hungarian road race national champion Attila Valter (Jumbo-Visma) made a significant move on the stiff uphill climb during the second half of the contest. He took third place, 20 seconds back from Tulett.

It was the second career victory for Tulett, who won stage 3 over a year ago at  Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali  as a 20-year-old. “Yeah, really hard” is how he described the effort.

“We knew it was going to make for a really hard time trial today, so it meant that the execution had to be really crucial. We came yesterday to look at the course, and we identified pretty quickly that it was going to be really tough. I am happy with my performance, so far,” Tulett said. “Yeah, we rode on road bikes, but it was quite fun. It looks like it’s going to be a hard week of racing.”

The opening 7.4km time trial began in Bergen with a flat stretch, using the city streets of Bryggen to Sandvikstorget and back to Bryggen before taking the urban switchbacks that led to the final 3.5km ascent of Mount Fløyen, with an average gradient of 8.8%.

The first rider to start was Simen Evertsen-Hegreberg (Team Norway) at 17:30. His mark of 15:50 set the stage and it wasn’t long until Alexander Kamp (Tudor Pro Cycling) took over in the hot seat with a time of 15:00.

Rune Herregodts (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) was the first rider to go under 15 minutes, one second faster than Kamp, and he was bumped out of the top spot by Norwegian Ådne Holter (Uno-X Pro Cycling), who posted 14:55.

Sheffield blistered the climbing section in nine-and-a-half minutes and crested the top of the climb with a new best time of 14:29. The 21-year-old North American held the lead as 18 more contenders completed their rides, including Thibau Nys (Trek-Segafredo), who was one of the few to go under the 15-minute mark by two seconds, putting him in the top five.

Sheffield was displaced when Ineos teammate Tulett eclipsed his mark by just one second, giving the Ineos pair the top two positions with the second half of the field to take the course. Holter held on to his podium spot as well.

2019 champion Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X Pro Cycling) generated applause from the Norwegian crowds, but lost over a minute and a half to Tulett by the time he completed the course. Two riders behind the Norwegian, Mathias Vacek (Trek-Segafredo) had a solid ride of 14:56, putting him in the top five just ahead of teammate Nys.

Second-to-last rider on the course was Josh Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers), the 2022 junior time trial world champion, and the young Welshman scored a time of 15:08.

The final rider on the course, Valter, was in and out of the saddle on the climb, stopping the clock for good in the prologue and was able to secure a podium spot, knocking Holter to fourth place.
