BWW Review: HELLO, DOLLY! at the Hobby Center Photo

a?oeDolly will never go away again!a?? But that's just it. Dolly has never gone anywhere. So long as there are humans on earth, Hello, Dolly! will continue to live. Somewhere, somehow, the show will always be produced, the songs always sung, the characters always riffed off of. It has left an impact that would be immeasurable. The late Jerry Herman's infectious melodies are so intertwined within the fabric of America that its title song helped Lyndon Johnson become President in 1964. This show is not to be missed!

BWW Review: Betty Buckley Makes Her Grand Entrance in HELLO, DOLLY! at the Ohio Theat Photo

Betty Buckley is as refined as it gets, starring in the refreshingly classic production of HELLO, DOLLY! at the Ohio Theatre. BWW Review: Wow! Wow! Wow, Fellas! Look at DOLLY Now, Fellas: She's Spectacular! Photo

It only takes a moment to realize that composer/lyricist Jerry Herman, aided and abetted by book writer Michael Stewart (with an able assist from Thornton Wilder), knew exactly what he was doing when he created the classic Broadway musical Hello, Dolly!: put together a star vehicle for a quintessential theater diva, surround her with characters both irascible and lovable, then give them all a score that's delightfully hummable and danceable and a script that's appealingly daft, maybe even a little goofy.

BWW Review: HELLO, DOLLY! at Hennepin Theatre Trust Photo

When I saw Hello, Dolly! In New York with Bette Midler last year, I was in awe. I knew that it was special, and it was an experience I'd never forget. I truly considered myself one of the luckiest theatre goers after seeing Midler in this iconic role and now I consider myself even luckier with the night I had at the Orpheum in Minneapolis. Not only have I seen one legend as the infamous Dolly Levi, but now I've seen two. Betty Buckley, best known for her Tony-Award winning performance as Grizabella in Cats, is saying hello audiences across the country in this national tour of Hello, Dolly!.

Blockbuster 'Hello, Dolly!' Revival to Lead 2018-19 Hollywood

Broadway travels West in the 2018-19 Hollywood Pantages Theatre season, with seven major musical productions, including the record-breaking revival of Hello, Dolly! , scheduled to hit the historic stage at the corner of Hollywood and Vine.

The season will kick off Nov. 6-25 with A Bronx Tale , the new musical adapted by Chazz Palminteri from his colorful 1960s childhood memoir, with songs by Alan Menken and Glenn Slater . Co-directed by Robert De Niro (who helmed the 1993 screen version) and stage veteran Jerry Zaks , the show has been running on Broadway since November 2016.

Zaks also directed the four-time Tony Award-winning revival of Hello, Dolly! The lovingly staged return to Broadway’s Golden Age has been playing to packed houses at New York’s Shubert Theatre since March 15 last year, grossing a staggering $91.9 million to date. Original leads Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce recently departed the production to make way for Bernadette Peters and Victor Garber.

No casting has been announced for the Pantages run, Jan. 29-Feb. 17, 2019. However, given that Midler followed her last Broadway engagement, starring as Sue Mengers in John Logan’s single-character play I’ll Eat You Last , by reprising the role in Los Angeles, fans can only hope she might be coaxed to do the same with Dolly Gallagher Levi.

Next up in the season is Cats , the 1981 Andrew Lloyd Webber blockbuster, staged by original director Trevor Nunn with updated choreography by Hamilton Tony winner Andy Blankenbuehler . The T.S. Eliot-inspired musical runs Feb. 26-March 24.

Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory follows, with Jack O’Brien directing a musical that combines new songs by the Hairspray team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman with classic tunes from the beloved 1971 Gene Wilder movie. That show runs March 27-April 14.

Director Bartlett Sher’s lauded Broadway revivals of South Pacific and The King and I have yielded popular touring productions in recent years. He follows April 16-May 5 with a fresh take on Fiddler on the Roof , which draws out connections between the classic show’s setting in early 20th century Russia and the enduring theme of forced emigration in the contemporary world.

Rounding out the Pantages season are two 1980s commercial behemoths from the composing team of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg , both in newly reimagined productions. First up is Les Miserables , playing May 7-June 2, followed by Miss Saigon , running July 16-Aug. 11.

Hello Dolly! – full cast confirmed

hello dolly tour cast 2018

As previously announced, quadruple Olivier Award-winner Staunton will play the formidable Dolly Levy alongside Andy Nyman ( Fiddler on the Roof , Menier Chocolate Factory) as Horace Vandergelder, Jenna Russell ( Sunday in the Park With George , West End and Broadway) as Irene Malloy, Tyrone Huntley ( Jesus Christ Superstar , Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre) as Barnaby Tucker and Harry Hepple ( Follies , National Theatre) as Cornelius Hackl. The principal cast is completed by Emily Lane ( Frozen , Theatre Royal Drury Lane) as Minnie Fay.

The full company includes: Leo Abad, Craig Armstrong, Lindsay Atherton, Gemma Atkins, Alan Bradshaw, Jabari Braham, Kevin Brewis, Jenni Bowden, Daisy Boyles, Samara Casteallo, Olly Christopher, Brendan Cull, Hayley Diamond, Jacqueline Hughes, Ashlee Irish, Jodie Jacobs, Shirley Jameson, Paul Kemble, Emily Langham, Michael Lin, Amira Matthews, Laura Medforth, Matt Overfield, Tom Partridge, Wendy-Lee Purdy, Edwin Ray, Phil Snowden, Kraig Thornber, Gavin Wilkinson and Liam Wrate.

Presented by Michael Harrison, who previously worked with Staunton on the multi-award-winning Gypsy at the Savoy Theatre, the new production will play a strictly limited 10-week season at the iconic venue from 6 July until 14 September.

Hello Dolly! will also reunite the theatrical dream team of leading lady Staunton and director Dominic Cooke after they collaborated so successfully on the critically acclaimed National Theatre production of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies .

With music and lyrics by Jerry Herman ( La Cage aux Folles, Mack & Mabel, Mame )   and a book by Michael Stewart ( 42nd Street, Mack and Mabel, Barnum ),  Hello, Dolly! debuted on Broadway in 1964 with Carol Channing starring. The show debuted in London a year later with Mary Martin stepping into the leading role.

Staunton will follow in the footsteps of a long line of talented and multi-award-winning actresses by taking on the role of the formidable matchmaker Dolly Levi. Previous Dollys include Ginger Rogers, Pearl Bailey, Betty Grable, Phyllis Diller and Ethel Merman. The most recent Broadway revival in 2017 starred Bette Midler followed by Bernadette Peters in 2018.

Staunton reportedly met with Herman just a few months before his death in December 2019, when the composer and lyricist gave Staunton and Cooke permission to switch the musical’s opening scenes and change one of the show’s songs.

WESTLAKE, Ohio -- Students from Westlake High School’s drama club are putting on several performances of “Hello, Dolly” this weekend.

Drama club director Jennifer Yachanin-Butler describes the show as an exciting mix of music and technology.

While online dating is becoming increasingly popular, and love these days is often found on software applications and social media, “Hello, Dolly” is a reminder of the charm of late 1800s-era love.

“I love seeing this diverse group of students collaborate to bring the latest technological

advances to a musical (first) made in the 1960s,” Yachanin-Butler said.

“In a world of online dating, it is fun to see these teens get excited about an old-fashioned story of matchmaking and love.”

The club has double-cast all nine leading roles, with each lead performing two shows. The first show was staged yesterday (April 18).

The high school’s instrumental department will provide the orchestral component of the production, and special 3-D printing and props are being furnished by TechMates.

In total, the musical features over 100 students representing various clubs and activities.

Remaining performances will be held at 7 p.m. today and Saturday (April 19 and 20) and 2 p.m. Sunday (April 21) at the high school, 27830 Hilliard Blvd.

Tickets will be sold at the door for $10 each and are payable by cash or check.
